The applicability of four empirical strength criteria for rock masses, namely, Hoek and Brown, Bieniawski - Yudhbir et al., Ramamurthy - Arora and Johnston - Sheorey et al. has been tested against the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris of Arora. The following modified Bieniawski criterion shows best agreement with the triaxial test data for jointed plaster of Paris: 611=1+B(63)O.825 acm 6cm where a1= axial compressive stress at failure, MPa; a3 = confining pressure, MPa; acm = uniaxial compressive strength of jointed plaster of Paris, MPa; and B = - 3.988 + 9.674 (aim ) -0.185 The modified Bieniawski strength criterion can be used to estimate the strength of a coal pillar, based on a knowledge of stress distribution in it.

The Kwinana Industrial Area (KIA) is by far the largest and most diverse industrial processing region (with supporting industries) in Western Australia. As with elsewhere in Australia (and globally), the KIA is facing sustainability challenges on various fronts, such as increasing water and energy scarcity, climate change, an aging workforce, and growing community expectations. Through the Kwinana Industries Council (KIC) the industries within Kwinana are working closely on common issues in the KIA, including the sustainable development of the region. Over the past decade, significant progress has been made by the industries towards the improvement of the sustainability performance at the company and regional level. Given the ever increasing sustainability pressures, there is strong desire to address sustainability challenges in the KIA, through a pro-active and collaborative industry approach. A sustainability roadmap is being developed to assist the KIC and its industry members with strategic decision making on the long-term sustainability of there. At the heart of the roadmap is a set of key performance indicators for each of seven priority themes or focus areas (water use, by-products produced, greenhouse gas emissions and energy use, economic performance, environment, community impacts and sustainable workforce). Aspirational targets and subsequent strategies are being developed for those activities where the KIC has an influence and can make a positive impact. The indicators and their targets enable constructive stakeholder discussions (eg with government and community) on emerging local issues and possible future directions for the KIA. The paper will report on the development process and the preliminary results of the sustainability roadmap for the KIA, including a historical perspective on milestones achieved so far and future aspirations.

Poor standards of electrical installation and maintenance continue to contribute to electrical related fatalities and injury risk in the mining industry. Electrical isolation has the potential to initiate major unwanted events (MUEs) and as such requires thorough analysis to demonstrate adequate management. There have been 719 incidents related to accidental contact with electricity over the past five years in the Queensland mining industry (Queensland Government DME, 2012a, 2012b) with the last fatality being recorded in 1997 (MESA, 2012).A project funded by the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) has developed a form of a safety case using the four-layered æCoal Mine Safety Regime (CMSR)Æ approach. The CMSR is transparent and robust as it includes full site risk assessment and special issues risk assessment to be demonstrated as part of the process.The practical application of the CMSR has been demonstrated using a longwall mining case study site, where a unique 11 kV armoured face conveyor (AFC) is in operation. The case study has involved progressive application of the requirements of each layer of the CMSR (see Figure 1) to high voltage (HV) electrical isolation related issues. The project has specifically concentrated on understanding and analysing two high priority MUEs, electric shock and unplanned movement of equipment, through Layer 1 analysis. These two MUEs are an important part of the project as they have demonstrated the steps that may be taken to satisfy the risk management processes at Layer 1 of the CMSR and have contributed to resolving issues at the other three layers of the CMSR.The analysis of HV electrical isolation has been used as an exemplar to demonstrate the CMSR process and its practical application. The CMSR is applicable to major/principal hazards management as identified by the New South Wales and Queensland jurisdictions.This paper provides an overview of the development of a form of safety case using the CMSR and introduces the case study application for HV electrical isolation risk management at underground coal mines focusing on the major unwanted event of electric shock.This project provides the mining industry with a documented, publicly accessible, form of safety case using the CMSR approach for the first time.CITATION:Kizil, G V, Griffiths, D, Bye, A and Joy, J, 2012. The Eagle on the Hill tunnels form part of an upgrade of Mt Barker Road, 15 km to the southeast of Adelaide. The upgrade significantly improves safety and reduces delays on this major road, which winds steeply through mountainous terrain. The twin tunnels each spanning 15 metres run in parallel for a length of 480 metres. The tunnels are excavated in slightly weathered high strength slates and very high strength quartzites of the Saddleworth Formation on the western margin of the Mount Lofty Ranges. Steeply dipping slate cleavages and the high fracture ratio result in many slope stability problems in the project area. The level of geotechnical investigation undertaken prior to the calling of tenders for the project was extensive. This included the excavation of a pilot tunnel along one of the tunnel alignments, which allowed accurate mapping and rating of the rock, resulting in an increased level of confidence during the tender process. One of the features of the winning alternative tender design was the use of canopy tubes, flexible steel ribs and shotcrete to replace up to 40 metres of deep portal cuts in unstable rock with driven tunnels. Slope stability issues were overcome with the use of rock dowels and shotcrete. The support concept allowed the safe driving of the tunnel portals with as little as two metres of overburden. The design incorporated lining drainage and criteria for fireproofing based on European experience to ensure the ability of the tunnels to remain stable in the case of a severe fire incident. The support design allowed for maximum flexibility with a range of support types able to deal with the varying ground conditions. Design development and support refinement continued throughout the tunnel construction phase with close liaison between the designer and the constructor. Monitoring and review of feedback from the construction site by the Sydney based design team was easily achieved by means of electronic transfer of photographic and survey information, telephone and fax communication and regular site visits. The contractor for this project is Macmahon Concrete Constructions Joint Venture (MCCJV) and the designer is Connell Wagner. Excavation commenced in January 1998 with tunnel breakthrough having been achieved in early-August 1998 and mid-September 1998 respectively. Concrete lining construction is scheduled for completion in April 1999.

The carbonatite-hosted apatite deposit at the Cajati open pit mine in the Jacupiranga igneous-carbonatite complex is located in south-eastern Brazil. The major styles of apatite mineralisation include veins or veinlets, small pods or patches, disseminated apatite and locally massive aggregates. The metallurgical concentration of the apatite is accomplished by grinding the carbonatite, removal of magnetite with a magnetic drum, size classification with cyclones and flotation to suppress carbonates and collect apatite. To examine the character of the apatite grains and to apply those observations to apatite beneficiation, specimens of carbonatite were collected from recent exposures in the mine and from selected drill holes. This study utilised a variety of microscopy methods, including transmitted and reflected light, cathodoluminescence (CL) and scanning electron microscopy with wavelength-dispersive spectrometers for mineral compositions. It was found that LREE, Na and Sr are the main elements replacing Ca in the apatite, with relatively low oxide contents (<0.5 per cent, but up to about one per cent for Sr). LREE and Sr contents consistently increase in the latest intrusions (C4, C5 and SP24). Chemical and morphological modifications of apatite were recognised to be related to detrimental effects on flotation recovery. Three examples illustrate this relationship: 1.  Apatite with reddish CL is fractured. Locally that apatite exhibits no CL due to CL quenching caused by iron entering the apatite structure.2.  Apatite from the xenolith-rich area exhibits abundant fine, platy silicates that appear to interfere with flotation and lower apatite recovery.3.  So called æhardÆ apatite, which is more difficult to grind, occurs in an area in the mine that was affected by hydrothermal activity. That activity is evidenced by the development of a bright, white CL rim in the apatite, and by the presence of late veins of carbonates and sulfides that fill fractures and appear to contribute to higher cohesiveness of those apatite grains.

The Lady Loretta silver-lead-zinc deposit lies north of Mount Isa in folded and faulted Proterozoic carbonate sediments. The deposit was discovered in the late 1960's as a result of a soil geochemical survey. Subsequent surface drilling outlined mineralisation folded into a synclinal structure extending to a depth of 460 m and containing exceptionally high grades within the keel of the syncline. Pancontinental Mining Limited and Outokumpu Oy of Finland acquired the property in 1985.

The Bowdens Silver Deposit is a low sulfidation epithermal silver-base metal deposit that has formed on the northern margin of a hydrothermal system within air-fall breccias, ignimbrites and crystal tuffs of rhyolitic composition. The deposit lies near the north-eastern margin of the Lachlan Fold Belt and the rhyolitic host rocks are of Early Permian age. The silver mineralisation occurs as flat-lying zones of disseminations and silicic fracture-filling within the Rylstone Volcanics and is closely associated with sulfides of iron, arsenic, lead and zinc. High-grade silver mineralisation is also found in steeply-dipping fracture zones which host banded sulfide veins. Studies of the alteration products indicate that high temperature fluids, flowing from south of the current project area, resulted in quartz (¦adularia) û illite/sericite alteration. Cool, low pH steam-heated waters on the northern and eastern margins of the prospect area resulted in siderite û smectite-illite clay û Fe-carbonate û marcasite û kaolinite alteration. Mixing of the two fluid types resulted in the deposition of iron and base metal sulfides, a decrease in both sulfur activity and pH of the mineralising fluid, and subsequent silver mineralisation.

Although the diesel engine is normally considered a tried and proven power source, many new and exciting diesel design concepts are being evaluated in engine development laboratories around the world. Three such programs currently underway at Cummins Engine Company are discussed. The turbocompound engine converts into power exhaust heat energy which is normally wasted. It does this by incorporating after the turbocharger a low pressure gas turbine which is gear driven to the crankshaft. The adiabatic engine has no conventional cooling system. It converts into useful power most of the heat energy normally rejected to the coolant. The series boost turbocharged engine uses seperate low and high pressure turbochargers to increase engine output and improve transient performance. These design concepts make possible increases in diesel engine thermal efficiency from the current 33 to 38 per cent range to the 50 percent range.

A major diamond mining operation in South Africa is faced with the unique problem of recovering usable water from the fine tailings stream. The kimberlite ore hoisted is washed prior to crushing in order to remove adhered fine clay particles. These particles form a colloidally stable suspension from which it has not been possible to recover clear recycle water. Research has been conducted on this problem for more than 20 years and it is only recently that a breakthrough has been achieved. This paper describes the work done to gain an understanding of the suspension stability and which subsequently led to the testing of a process at pilot-plant Scale.

The concept of an in stream analysis probe was developed at The Zinc Corporation (now Z.C. Mines) in the late 1960's and commercialised quite rapidly, by Phillips and then AMDEL, as an alternative to the established centralised systems (Courier, etc.). The developments which have taken place since that time are reviewed and current procedures and performance are described. An audit of the system, recently undertaken by AMDEL, has highlighted areas where improvements can be made. In 1988 the ISA system will become an integral part of a substantially upgraded process control system.

With a view to characterising activated carbons with respect to their ability to adsorb gold from cyanide solutions, an attempt was made to establish correlations between the equilibrium capacity constant of the activated carbon for gold (k value) and five other parameters. These parameters were percentage ash content, iodine number, methylene blue value, surface area, and pH respectively. Twenty four different proprietary brand activated carbon products were examined, the correlations being established by means of linear regression analysis. It was shown that a significant correlation only existed between k and pH value. This was interpreted in terms of the presence of oxide complexes on the activated carbon surface. Further test specifications as developed at the Anglo American Research Laboratories are also outlined with a view to the selection of activated carbons suitable for use in' a carbon-in-pulp operation. Methods for assessing both the capacity and the kinetic response of carbons for gold adsorption are presented, while the measurement of attrition resistance, particle size distribution and moisture and solubles content is also outlined. The measurement of the capacity constant for gold adsorption together with attrition resistance are considered to be necessary in the initial selection of a suitable carbon.

The presence of coal in the Sydney area was confirmed in 1891 when Cremorne Bore No. I intersected cindered coal at 1 854 m. The decision to develop Sydney Harbour Colliery was based on the results of Cremorne Bore No. 2 (drilled in 1892) in which a 3.12 m. seam of unaltered coal was encountered at 889 m. Geologists from the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources consider that this seam is probably equivalent to an upper split of the Bulli seam. Long Cove at Balmain was selected by Sydney Harbour Collieries Ltd. as the site for mine development in 1896. This was due to opposition to the proposed establishment of a colliery on the north shore of Port Jackson near Cremorne. Construction of the main access and ventilation shafts (termed Birth- day and Jubilee), other mine infrastructure and the quay wall occurred between 1897 and 1902. A fatal accident in which five men were killed occurred during the construction of the Birthday Shaft in 1900. This acci- dent resulted in amendments to the Mining Act providing for guide rails in shafts.

The measurement of the fragmentation size distribution of a blast muckpile can be achieved directly by screening the entire muckpile. Screening of muckpiles in a production operation is generally not practical due to the logistics and time involved moving large volumes of rock through a screening plant. An indirect technique to assess blast fragmentation size distributions has been developed. This technique uses photographs of the blast muckpile taken at intervals during the excavation cycle. The images from the photographs are input to desktop computer software via a digitiser tablet. The software compilates the rock fragment sizes and calculates a size distribution. This paper discusses the technique and subsequent data analysis. Examples of the application of this technique for the assessment of comparative blast performance are given.

Completing its historical role the opera tion of copper blast furnace of the Saganoseki Smelter was terminated in 1970, but it left some interesting data on metal lumps formed at the furnace bottom. Analysis disclosed the lumps to be speiss containing 100 to 10,000 g/t of Au and Ag and stratified to iron speiss and copper speiss. Solidifying temperatures of iron speiss and copper speiss being approximately 1,090¦C and 800¦C respectively, copper speiss precipitated at the lower side. The distribution coefficient of Au and Ag between matte and speiss (g/t Au(Ag) in matte / g/t Au(Ag) in speiss) is in the range of 1 x 10 2 to 2 x 10 ' and 1 x 10 1 to 5 respectively. The higher Cu % is in speiss, the-more An and Ag are distributed into speiss. Except for a few data, these results comfotm well to the range of distribution equilibria of Au and Ag in matte and speiss systems by Gerlach and Others.

It is now 32 years since Walsh's classic publication (1) heralded the beginning of atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AA) as we know it today. During this time, AA has developed into the most widely used analytical techniques for the determination of the metallic elements. The years have seen progressive changes in instrumentation so that today it is a highly sophisticated technique. One area of development in AA that is experiencing renewed attention is in the area of electrothermal excitation. In this technique a flame is not used by the analyte solution is atomised by an electrically heated graphite furnace. For a large number of elements the graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer (GFAA) is considerably more sensitive than flame work. It is common to be able to detect concentrations one hundred times smaller than those possible by flame. Today's geochemists are finding that they can gain valuable information out of very low limits of detection. Electrothermal atomic absorption spectrophotometry (or GFAA) allows for low limits of detection and can be seen to be a valuable aid to geochemical prospecting Analysis.

Material hardness and environmental factors can limit or restrict conventional blasting techniques and this has led to advancements in the performance and efficiency of ripping. Not all materials can be ripped, however today's technology and experience can help make a reasonable prediction. A ripping versus blasting decision will depend on the total volume of material to be moved, the production capabilities and costs of the ripping tractor(s) and on the size and relative efficiency of drilling and Blasting.

Exploration risk increases with time, due to a general decrease in prospectivity as the more accessible deposits are found, and be- cause of rising costs and demands due to an improving standard of living. Risk is separated into financial risk, which increases sharply at the development stage, and the risk of failure which is at its peak at the outset of exploration. Risk is also divided into internal and external factors; some of the latter cannot be offset, viz. the systematic overall risk for any enterprise. The recently emergent risk embodied in withdrawal of large areas from exploration access is discussed. An appeal is made for objective multiple land-use policies to be applied so that land remains available at reasonable cost and with appropriate environ- mental safeguard conditions. Risks specific to gold exploration are discussed. As gold now accounts for over 50% of all mineral exploration, and most other metals are depressed, any sharp decline in gold will have grave effects on the ex- ploration industry. Gold exploration will become more difficult and expensive in about five years, after most of the readily accessible deposits in Australia are found. Government's role is important in pro- viding stability and basic data at reasonable cost. Exploration for specific minerals or of particular areas could be stimulated by extending the 150%.tax deductibility of R & D to aspects of exploration of strategic im- portance, particularly in the event of a downturn. Exploration is classic scientific research, at least through to the proving Stages.

Most base and precious metal mineralisation in the Gympie Province is genetically linked to intrusion of branitoids of Late Permian to Late Triassic age. Most lodes are hydrothermal quartz and quartz-calcite veins at intrusive contacts, within either the granitoids themselves or the country rocks, and commonly associated with dykes. Other types of intrusive related deposits are disseminated porphyry type Cu, base metals in skarns, and Mo in quartz pipes and veins. Although the Late Permian-Late Triassic granitic intrusives can be subdivided in terms of age, it is not yet possible to relate deposits of particular metals or styles to granites of a specific age on a regional scale.Some significant mineralisation is not associated with granitic intrusions. This includes the Gympie goldfield, by far the largest known deposit within the Gympie Province. Gold occurs in quartz veins crosscutting Early Permian volcaniclastic sediments and also in NW striking fault zones. The source of the mineralisation is unknown. Gold and silver also occur in epithermal, disseminated and breccia hosted deposits within Late Triassic continental volcanics. Epithermal Hg mineralisation at Kilkivan may be related to Early-Middle Triassic volcanics.

The Beruang Copper-Gold Deposit is located very near the centre of Kalimantan in Indonesia. It is a dacitic tuff hosted deposit currently being explored by Kalimantan Gold Inc of Canada. Exploration activity to date at Beruang has been focused on the Main Zone, which is defined by a north-south elongate, 1 + 1.5 km zone of anomalous copper and gold, and intense phyllic alteration. The disseminated sulfides responsible for the anomalous copper values produce a moderate to high chargeability signature. Phyllic alteration is overlain at high levels, and on the western edge of the Main Zone, by advanced argillic alteration. The dacite tuffs hosting the mineralisation are cut by post-mineralisation dacite dykes that are delineated by ground magnetics and geological mapping. Base metals, principally zinc and lead, form broad halos around the Main Zone. These metals are incorporated in massive NE-trending, polymetallic mineralisation that outcrops to the north and south of the Main Zone. IP survey results highlight the highly pyritic NNE-trending shear zone, which hosts most of the copper mineralisation in the Main Zone. A high chargeability anomaly at depth in the central-east part of the Main Zone is interpreted to be the source for mineralising hydrothermal fluids. This is suggested by zonations in alteration and mineralisation. A deep chargeability anomaly can be correlated with the downward plunge of a pyritic breccia, encountered at shallow levels in drillholes, and is a potential breccia pipe target. Compilation and inversion modelling of the IP results has yielded some interesting drill targets.
