The history of the physical chemistry of steelmaking is reviewed through international conferences, and compared with the Japanese contribution. Subjects remaining to be solved are discussed. Several steelmaking technologies developed recently in Japan are surveyed.

The effects of process variables such as solution chemistry, flocculent type and dosage, intensity and duration of mixing, and solids type and concentration, on the performance of flocculation/clarification/thickening processes are described. System response is evaluated in terms of the specific effects on floc settling, supernatant clarity and sediment compressibility. The implications of these results with respect to industrial practice are discussed and general guidelines for direct application to plant design and operation are suggested.

An automated method, which is believed to be the fastest in the world and which can be used by mineralogically-untrained technical assistants, has been developed for the rapid location of native gold particles and other gold minerals down to 1 pm in size in ores, concentrates, and tailings using a scanning electron microscope. Searching of a 25 mm diameter polished block in 1 pm steps usually requires 3-4 h. Examples of the location of native gold and gold tellurides in drill core sections, in crushed ore samples and gravity and flotation concentrates, and in various metallurgical test products are given. The results have application in ore exploration, in guiding metallurgical test programmes, and in assessing metallurgical per- formance in testwork and in operating plants.

Efficient performance of pulp lifters to discharge ground rock is critical to the effective performance of SAG and AG mills. The paper covers developments in the design of pulp lifters and associated grates, of both conventional straight-radial and curved types, and of the inner discharge cone. Issues covered include the discharge performance of both the slurry and rock components of the discharge, reverse flow back into the mill through open grates and backflow down the pulp lifters of material that fails to discharge from the mill. The design experience is interpreted in the light of developments in particle flow modelling of the flow of charge in pulp lifters.

Magnetite mineralisation within the South Middleback Range has been known since the early 1930s; however, it was not until 1989 that BHP (then owners of the Middleback Ranges mining leases) drilled 10 700 m of diamond core into what was then known as the Iron Duchess low-grade deposit. In 2002 a review of Iron Resources left in the Middleback Ranges and the identification of downstream processing benefits using magnetite as a primary feed source led to the commencement of an 18 000 m resource drilling program of the high-grade core of the Iron Duchess low-grade orebody (renamed the Iron Magnet deposit). This paper describes the geology, processes and procedures used since drilling recommenced in early 2003. The Iron Magnet deposit is located 53 km southwest of Whyalla in the South Middleback Range, South Australia. It is a Paleoproterozoic stratabound magnetite deposit that lies down-dip and lateral to the Iron Duke hematite deposit, hosted within the Lower Middleback Iron Formation of the Hutchison Group meta-sediments within the Cleve subdomain of the Gawler Craton. Magnetite bearing host units within the Lower Middleback Iron Formation can be divided into a æmixedÆ basal sequence, a lower iron carbonate unit, a middle iron talc unit and an upper iron silica unit, all units grading up sequence and laterally into one another. The magnetite mineralisation is hydrothermal in origin. The strongest consistent mineralisation coincides with the iron carbonate unit, and the hematite orebodies of the Iron Duke are interpreted to represent up-dip supergene enrichment of the same unit. The Iron Magnet occurs within a large-scale parasitic syncline-anticline pair on the west limb of a larger syncline. Major bounding north-south shear zones occur on the east and west sides of the deposit. Cross-cutting west-northwest, northwest, northeast and east-northeast trending faults displace mineralisation. The commencement of drilling in 2003 lead to the migration of geological and geochemical databases, re-logging and re-assaying of all old cores that intersected the deposit, updating of logging codes and procedures, and strict Qa/Qc procedures to ensure the study satisfied JORC standards. External consultants were used for auditing and bench marking. The strong geophysical responses of magnetite and the wealth of close spaced ground magnetic and gravity data already completed over the Middleback Ranges allowed for refining of drill hole targets for the drilling program. It also provided an indirect method for ascertaining magnetite grade and tonnage volumes.

Bacterial leaching of museum grade chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite concentrates at low sorptive relative humidities (55-91 per cent rH) was demonstrated. Optimum release rates were 13 and 27 mg/gram/100 days copper (Cu++) at 91 per cent and 80 per cent rH and 12 and 33 mg/gram/100 days iron (Fe++) at 80 per cent and 73 per cent rH for concentrate and "pure" chalcopyrite respectively. The optimum copper release rates occurred between 73 per cent - 86 per cent rH and 30-40 mM acid concentrations. Bacterial copper leaching rates were some twenty times slower for emersed copper concentrates, at low relative humidity, compared with submerged cultures. Bacterial copper solubilization was almost quantitatively inhibited above 150 mM acid levels (< pHO.8).

Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd (HPPL) drilled two deep diamond stratigraphic holes (ECD0001 and RHD0296) within the eastern Fortescue Valley in the Pilbara of Western Australia. Located south of the Roy Hill Iron Ore project, the holes aimed to define the stratigraphy of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (MMIF) of the Chichester Range and its south-dipping extensions below recent cover. Previous attempts to define the MMIF of the Chichester Range have resulted in differing interpretations due to the data available at the time.The unweathered MMIF beneath the Fortescue Valley in the HPPL drill holes is characterised by dolomitic carbonate interbedded with stilpnomelane-rich shales, chert and banded iron formation (BIF) with hematite staining. This intersection equates to ~75 m of carbonate-facies iron formation, as opposed to the ~230 m thick oxide-facies BIF and shale sequence encountered south of the Fortescue Valley.Various detailed geological core analyses and interpretations from ECD0001 and RHD0296 were integrated with regional diamond and reverse circulation (RC) holes from across the Fortescue Valley. Interpretation of the data indicates that the eastern Fortescue Valley MMIF represents a thinned thickness sequence of the whole formation. The MMIF of the Chichester Range and Fortescue Valley has gamma logs that correlate strongly in parts to the type section used for MMIF south of the Fortescue Valley. Therefore, the outcropping MMIF in the Chichester Range represents an eroded equivalent of the æreducedÆ thickness MMIF observed in ECD0001 and RHD0296.Data from deep diamond drill holes across the valley, from the Hamersley Basin to the Carawine Basin, were correlated. The correlation shows that the depositional site of the MMIF in the HPPL diamond drill holes is consistent with a proximal ramp setting, in which iron-rich shales wedge up-palaeoslope and shelf-derived carbonate turbidites wedge down-palaeoslope. Not only is it the occurrence of these shales that define the MMIF, but they also determine the northward potential to develop orebodies, as they are the source of iron from which iron-rich oxides and carbonates of metamorphic or diagenetic origin form.CITATION:Hurst, J, KrapeP, B and Hawke, P, 2013. The anode, tank house and wire bar plant and operations are described with particular reference to those features of design and methods which are characteristic of this refinery at its inception.Reference is also made to auxiliary equipment, transport and materials handling facilities.The work of commissioning the plant late in 1959 is discussed and comment is made on the organisation of construction and origin of the equipment.LOCATION OF PLANTThe site chosen for the copper refinery is on level ground adjacent to the junction of the Mount Isa and the main north-south railway lines at Stuart near Townsville, Queensland. Blister for refining is received by rail from Mount Isa. Refined products are taken 10 miles by road to Townsville Harbour for shipment to other Australian ports or overseas, or despatched by rail direct from the plant.Adequate room for expansion was provided to cover copper refining and any associated industry. The layout of future extensions was planned and space reserved for them before detailing the original units of the main refinery.The initial plant also provides convenient storage facilities and is laid out to derive the greatest benefit from prevailing northerly breezes during the humid tropical summer.As far as possible, the working areas are located so that the prevailing winds cool them as they traverse the buildings.These factors are of very great importance since this is believed to be the only copper refinery in the tropics operating with all white labour and in any case the Company set out to provide the best possible conditions for its operating personnel.

The construction of mine headframes of reinforced concrete is not a new departure as many structures have been built of this, material particularly in Canada and South Africa. This type of construction has been satisfactorily tested in service and is now accepted by the mining fraternity.The two headframes at New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited are the first structures of this type to be built in Australia, and provide an interesting application of reinforced concrete design and construction.Reasons for Adoption of ConcreteDuring 1947 the writer visited D.S.A. and Canada and inspected three headframes, of reinforced concrete construction.Leading details are as follows:(i) Hollinger Gold Mines. (Timmins, Ontario) : Height of sheaves 110 ft. Shaft has provision for 4 skips each of 12,000 lb. capacity. Structure incorporates surface crushing plant.(ii) International Nickel Corporation-Murray Shaft (Sudbury): Height to sheaves 153 ft. 6 in. Shaft provides for 2-12 ton skips and 2 cages. Surface crushing plant built integrally with frame.(iii) Asbestos-Johns Manviae (Quebec): Height of sheaves 116 ft. Shaft provides for 2 skips 200 cu. ft.

From experience in the design and operation of power station combustion facilities in most mainland Australian States, involving a wide range of black coals and lignites, and in the specification and procurement of coal supplies for power station use, techniques for the optimisation of coal resource development and power generation utilisation have been developed to ensure compatibility between characteristics of the selected coals and power station design. These techniques include computer data bases for resource data handling and computer simulation of coal-fired boilers for determining coal property cost effects. Data Base Systems allow results of coal analyses to be efficiently handled, to assist in the review of the relevance of resource data to the coal sections proposed to be mined and the coal fractions proposed to be marketed. Data Base Systems also facilitate the marshalling of coal quality data into basic utilisation format to enable a proper utilisation review and analysis of the certainty and scatter of coal properties. Computer simulation of the effects of different coal properties on the capital and operating cost of power stations is achieved by establishing conceptual design parameters of the major items of plant to relate the variations in coal specification to equipment size and type. Variations in power station budget costs can then be determined using the computer model for variations in coal specification.

Increased awareness and stricter enforcement of regulatory requirements for adequate rehabilitation of surface mining sites has made environmental planning an essential part of strip mine planning. Rehabilitation is site specific and should be based on data which relate to that site. Cost-effective spoil pile design to minimise erosion is an important part of rehabilitation. Spoil pile design is an integral part of strip mine design. QCT Resources Limited has provided a postgraduate scholarship toward research in this area. The controlling factors of spoil pile design are post-mining land use, drainage requirements and degree and rate of erosion. The extent to which mine design is controlled by these factors is determined by regulatory requirements. To plan acceptable rehabilitation programs, erosion processes must be accurately modelled, and a range of erosion prediction models are available. Useful prediction models can be placed in two categories with the first category containing soil loss prediction models which can be used to predict the amount of soil lost from an area over a short or long term basis. Models in this category include the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE), Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP), Griffith University Erosion and Sedimentation System (GUESS) and Chemical, Runoff and Erosion from Agricultural Management Systems (CREAMS). The second category contains topographic evolution models which give an indication of the long term morphological development of a formed surface subjected to erosion processes. Models in this category include "Topog", Willgoose's Physically Based Catchment Evolution Model and Areal Nonpoint Source Watershed Environment Response Simulation (ANSWERS). The USLE has been used in the agricultural field for soil loss prediction. To apply the equation to mine sites in Central Queensland, it is necessary to understand the factors affecting erosion at the sites. This understanding should allow the variables of the equation to be quantified. The rainfall factor applied in the USLE is independent of engineering design or soil management techniques. The factor of spoil erodibility is dependent on the material's physical and chemical properties and can vary from site to site. In the equation, the topographic factor, cover and management factor and conservation practices factor can be varied by design to reduce erosion on rehabilitated areas.

The Mt Keith ultramafic intrusive extends for about 200 kilometres from Agnew in the south to Wiluna in the north. It forms the host for a number of nickel sulphide orebodies including Mt Keith and Honeymoon Well. Long fibre minerals are associated with the orebodies. The presence of these minerals impacts on the issue of tailings disposal from several standpoints, particularly the slurry beaching properties and dust generation from dry beaches. Central thickened discharge (CTD) is an innovative method of tailings disposal that involves stacking tailings in a low conical hill instead of storing them in cells. In appropriate circumstances this leads to savings in capital costs and operating expenditure. The method was introduced to Australia in 1981, and is currently employed at four operating mines, Elura and Peak Gold, both at Cobar in NSW, McArthur River in the Northern Territory, and Union Reefs near Pine Creek, also in the Northern Territory. It is the proposed method for Century Zinc and Ernest Henry, both in Queensland. The paper describes laboratory test work and design parameters for the application of the method to tailings disposal at Honeymoon Well and compares them with comparable data for other CTD systems. Of particular relevance for design purposes are beach slope, density, and water recovery. Wind tunnel tests were conducted on the Honeymoon Well tailings samples to investigate dust generation from the dry beach surface and it was concluded that dust generation from an undisturbed beach would not occur because of crusting.

Cut and fillstoping using hydraulically placed mill tailings has become an essential feature of stoping operations in Kalgoorlie. ' Approximately 30 per cent of the total production is currently mined by this method. Fill is prepared by thickening or cycloning and is gravitated or pumped underground. The average pulp density is 70 per cent solids by weight, Recent cost reducing innovations are the use of steel passes, corrugated iron manways, polythene film sealing, and the replacing of vertical cement lined pipes with boreholes. The importance of good winding rope practice is stressed. Details of the ropes used for various duties in the four shafts of The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) are given. Inspection, testing (including non destructive methods), maintenance and rope discard criteria are discussed. There are sane catments about rope installation methods and an appendix is included which outlines the appropriate statutory requirements for winding ropes in New South Wales (NSW).

In this paper, a subtle, but important, difference has been drawn between responsibility and mandate. Responsibility has a connotation of financial involvement assigned to an organ- isation as a result of some action it takes, the ramifications of which can be ascribed directly to the organisation. In contrast mandate relates to the power and authority to act. The paper outlines the role of poli- ticians as community decision-makers and the need for Government policy to be flexible in an advanced industrial society so that decision- making options are kept open for as long as necessary. Further, broad community objectives need to be understood and defined so that plans and policies can be consistent. Co-ordination through communication at all levels, especially at the public administration interfaces and with the private sector,is essential for effective resource allocation and efficient implementation. The paper discusses several aspects of the infrastructure responsibility question and some considerations which might be viewed as important by the community decision-makers in considering what responsibility the "community" should accept in providing infrastructure.

The Tom's Gully gold mine is located 90km ESE from Darwin, in the Northern Territory of Australia. The orebody is the auriferous portion of a large sulphide rich quartz reef, hosted in the Wildman Siltstone Formation of the Early Proterozoic Pine Creek Inlier, at the NH extremity of the Mount Bundey granite-syenite intrusion. It was discovered by Carpentaria Exploration Company Pty Ltd on November 17th, 1986, using stream sediment geochemistry.The reef is 800m long at surface, strikes E-H and dips approximately 300 to the south, becoming progressively less steep. Only the eastern half of the reef is auriferous, with gold grades averaging 9 g/t plus anomalous silver, base metals and arsenic.The enclosing siltstone is a dark grey banded carbonaceous and pyritic metapelite, showing areenschist regional metamorphism and thermal effects from the adjacent pluton. Local folding plunging gently SW is cut by a south dipping fault, probably a thrust, in which the reef was later formed at about the time of the granitic intrusion. Geomechanics is one of the more specialised aspects of site supervision on a major tunnell- ing project. The controlled deformation of a rock mass as a result of tunnelling and the knowledge of loading of temporary and permanent underground supports are important for safe, economic construction. These basic parameters depend on the construction method and sequence and the geological conditions through which a tunnel is driven. Thus geomechanical monitoring during the construction phase provides feedback to a design team and allows any revisions to a design to cater for local conditions not revealed by earlier investigations. Detailed geological mapping is an integral part of geomechanics in the construction phase. It serves as a monitor on pre construction predictions and also forms part of the as- constructed record. If conventional excavation-techniques are adopted, geomechanics can provide a service of blast' vibration monitoring of surface structures in urban areas.

The limitations of the conventional practices, and their effects, in prospecting for and in the evaluation of alluvial gold deposits are briefly reviewed. Geophysical prospecting methods have demonstrated their complementary role in the delineation of deposits by reducing the number of boreholes which are primarily of a 'probing' type. Larger diameter boreholes, although more expensive on a linear basis, are much cheaper on a volume recovered basis. The need to have sufficient volume as well as number of samples is stressed. Classical statistical methods are not appropriate for such deposits as there is sufficient structure, or spatial correlation, to require the application of geostatistics. Quite reliable semi-variograms, but not in all cases, of the spherical scheme have been obtained. Subsequent kriging has, to date, been confined to unworked deposits: retrospective estimates to compare to production have not therefore been produced. However, the technique shows promise but indicates a considerably greater borehole density (of the conventional diameter) may be necessary to produce confident estimates. Used in conjunction with larger diameter boreholes, a lesser borehole density may be sufficient, through radical reductions of the sampling error.

The maintenance system for underground mobile equipment at Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd. has been modified from that originally planned as a result of experience gained in operating the equipment.Downtime due to breakdowns has been reduced by improvement of vehicle servicing and overhaul procedures.Frequency of breakdowns can be reduced by training operating and maintenance personnel to a high standard, ensuring adequate numbers of tradesmen and supervisors, good maintenance facilities and communications, a well designed mine layout, and a comprehensive stock of spare parts.A maintenance and downtime summary is compiled for each four-week operating period and this is useful in highlighting particular problems where corrective action must be taken.

Challenges facing middle management in the 1980's and beyond are not confined to business matters such as industrial relations, government and legal constraints, corporate takeovers, and commodity marketing. More particularly they deal with people issues and the interrelationship of corporate/ family relationships. There is a need for corporations to acknowledge the growing conflict between corporate/family roles being brought about by such matters as equal opportunity, double professional marriage partnerships, personal mobility and the increasing stress faced by managers as a result of current demands and expectations being placed on them. While the main responsibility for managing professional life as well as the relationship between professional and private life rests with the individual executive, corporations nevertheless have a major responsibility to assist these executives in this management process. Corporations in Australia are taking steps to address this situation but much more needs to be done. This was highlighted in the March 1985 "Middle Management" course with its associated Spouses Programme presented jointly by Australian Mineral Foundation and The Australian Administrative Staff College. Effective communication is at the heart of the matter but no amount of training on this subject will bear fruit unless there is an associated commitment by executives to improve the effectiveness of their communi- cation process both in their corporate and family roles.
