In this paper, the kinetics of iron precipitation as sodium jarosite from aqueous solution is investigated. The determination of the reaction mechanism is attempted based on the experimental data of iron removal as a function of time, without using the characteristics of the precipitate.Experiments at the temperature range from 50° to 95°C were carried out with initial conditions of iron concentration IQ g/L, sodium sulphate concentration 25.44 g/L, sulphuric acid concentration 3.68 g/L, pH = 1.5 and agitation rate 600 rpm. Temperature greatly and positively influences iron precipitation from the solution and this is accompanied by pH decrease. The activation energy was determined using the maximum values of the precipitation rate, which were evaluated by polynomial fitting of the sigmoidal shape experimental curves, and it was found to be 44.37 kcallmole. The determination of the rate-controll ing mechanism was based on some criteria used for the discrimination among the three probable mechanisms of precipitation (diffusion, mononuclear nucleation, polynuclear nucleation). These criteria utilise various funetions of the recovery 'a' of iron precipitated versus time, the most important of which are the chronomals. The results of the kinetic analysis procedure showed that the polynuclear nucleation growth mechanism controls the precipitation of iron as sodium jarosite. This was confirmed by the high value of activation energy, excluding diffusion as the controlling mechanism.

ABSTRAC'T' Although hosted within an Ordovician magmatic arc, the Peak Hill high sulphidation system displays features typical of younger Pacific Rim high sulphidation epithermal gold deposits. Regional NW trending transfer structures are inferred to localise the magmatic source at their intersection of the NS trending arc. Fluids have migrated from the magmatic source along NW structures and thence exploited permeable horizons, which have become silicified. Alteration displays typical zonation from silicification through assemblages characterised by alunite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite and is followed by breccia/fracture controlled sulphide and gold deposition. Sinistral rotation on the NS arc has dilated NW trending fractures to produce the WNW to EW dilational fractures which host the higher grade ore. Mineral assemblages are typical of formation distal to the magmatic source in an epithermal environment. The combination of alteration and mineralisation zonation with structure provide fluid vectors which target a magmatic source to the SE of Peak Hill.

A coal mine is proposed for an area where a major river traverses the project area. There were initial concerns that inflow of groundwater from exposures of high permeability alluvium associated with the river system could pose mine dewatering problems together with adverse impacts on surface water resources in the river. The project included collation and analysis of geological and hydrogeological data collected historically over a long period of project investigation and evaluation. The project also included establishment of additional groundwater monitoring points to provide a reliable groundwater contours. The groundwater level contours were produced to allow numerical models to be calibrated to support estimation of groundwater inflow. River bed cross sections were also prepared to assist study of the effect of river flow on the inflow. Two separate MODFLOW groundwater models were produced to simulate long-term groundwater inflow to the mine with an upper model consisting of the Quaternary and Tertiary alluvium lumped together and a lower, separate model consisting of Mesozoic coal measures. Analytical solutions were used to predict initial inflow from the alluvium and from the coal measures.

There are two major aspects to wall control blasting – the potential for any blasthole to cause wall damage and the potential for a delayed sequence of blastholes to cause damage. The damage potential of individual blastholes is governed by standoff distance and charge weight. However, for locations sufficiently close to a highwall, dynamic finite element models and field measurements show that there is also a critical nature to those blastholes very close to the wall, over and above standoff distance. At many mine sites, the charge weight/standoff-distance is set by trial and error. Thus, a significant aspect of the present work is the determination of dynamic stress radiating from a blasthole. Unfortunately, the modelling and measurement of this dynamic stress is still faced with many difficulties. Typical models have questionable aspects, which casts serious doubt over their predictions, and it is shown that the Hustrulid Bar experimental technique does not correctly account for stress wave attenuation in extended media. In an attempt to solve the dynamic stress problem, the present work describes a model based on an exact solution under the assumption of viscoelastic material. The model takes full account of the rock mass elastic/viscoelastic properties, the explosive type, geometry and primer location and predicts a dynamic stress for direct comparison with the unconfined compressive strength of the local rock mass. This model predicts the standoff distance required to avoid damage due to a single blasthole. The behaviour of a delayed sequence of blastholes is analysed using an upgraded waveform superposition model, covering a range of initiation delay combinations, which predicts the peak particle motion (PPM) induced in the wall for each combination. This approach shows that there is no need to fire dedicated trim shots close to walls; all that is required is a carefully modified production shot. The mechanism of vibration screening is discussed, and its use in a superposition model highlights the potential of reverse firing (shield blasting) to reduce wall PPM. A conceptual model is also introduced to give a further insight to vibration screening and damage (via ground heave). This model predicts that a centre-lift blast will have a central heave profile and that a reverse-fired shot will produce a smaller power trough than that produced by a standard shot. It is demonstrated that the mechanism of presplit formation is not well understood; nevertheless, experimental evidence shows that presplits can be an effective method for reducing wall vibrations.CITATION:Blair, D P, 2015. As part of a large AMIRA project, an on-line moisture meter was installed at two mine sites in Central Queensland. This project investigated the factors which control the moisture content of coarse (>0.5 mm) coal from the centrifuges used in conventional coal preparation plants. It was placed immediately after the first centrifuge to isolate the factors pertaining to one machine and its feed.The meter was found to be accurate and precise when compared with manual and mechanical sampling methods. The Grubbs estimator technique indicated that its precision is better than 0.3 per cent at the 95 per cent confidence limit.It has been identified that:1. the variability of the measured moisture contents of coarse coal can be described by normal distributions. Standard deviations of about 0.6 per cent are common; and2. the treatment of the coarse coal on the drain and rinse screens immediately prior to the centrifuge can affect the final moisture content.

High resolution seismic profiling has proved a cost effective tool for defining the structure and seam geometry of Late Cretaceous-Late Miocene age lignite deposits in the South Island of New Zealand since 1981.In 1985 a total of 45 km of Mini Sosie seismic reflection was carried out in the Benhar, Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposits as part of a major multidisciplinary resource investigation funded by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board. For each deposit the seismic programme involved integrating four or more intersecting Mini Sosie traverses with a grid of 1000 m spaced geophysically logged drillholes. The objective was to detect faults, with displacements ranging 30 - 100 m, which might impede mining using bucket wheel excavator systems at depths down to 300 m below surface.In general the quality of processed seismic data was high and with the assistance of ynthetic seismograms and other geological information, it was possible to identify a number of significant previously unknown faults. The success of this seismic programme ha shown that high resolution seismic profiling, used in conjunction with relatively low density drilling, can produce valuable structural and tratigraphic information at an early stage of open pit mining investigation.

The use of stable isotopic measurements as a technique for elucidating the origin and history of the water in hydrothermal fluids is relatively new. Recent studies have emphasized the importance of meteoric water in the formation of many hydrothermal ore deposits including many epithermal gold-base metal deposits which occur in faulted volcanic terrane. Other vein-type gold ores are be- lieved to have formed from fluids of magmatic or metamorphic origin and exhibit characteri stic 6180 values. These values also give information regarding temperatures and the degree of equilibrium. Preliminary oxygen data for some important gold deposits of eastern Australia are evaluated in the con- text of styles of mineralization.

The paper covers the history and develop- ment of electrical and diesel-powered hydrau- lic percussion rock drills. It examines main design aspects and problems encountered in pro- ducing an efficient and reliable machine to fully cover the nominal hole sizes required for underground development, production drill- ing and for general quarry work. The main design features and advantages of a hydraulic rock drill are relatively low input power requirement to energy per blow (this being achieved by the use of an electric or diesel- powered hydraulic system) and a specially con- structed piston using a powered damper cylinder to absorb the recoil forces from the drill steel and reduce stresses on the drill, feed and hydraulic boom. A further important design feature is the anti-jamming device which controls the drill both during manual and automatic operation. This anti-jam device works on feed and rotation press and prevents the drill bit becoming jammed in broken or soft ground. These features and many other mechanical and environmental benefits are highlighted when comparing hydraulic percussion rock drills with current pneumatic machines. The hydraulic rock drill gives an overall high penetration and production rate, with an added bonus for ergonomy and environmental conditions such as lower noise level, no fogging from air and oil exhaust (which naturally gives better air for breathing),plus improved vision when in under- ground situations. Hydraulic rock drills and systems have been fully tested in many mines, quarries and contract sites during the past years. They h6! been improved and modified and are now provi~ to be very reliable and economical piece drilling equipment whò in mines and quarries.

The Windarra nickel deposits known to date comprise two sulphide orebodies located at Mount Windarra and South Windarra. These orebodies, which are 15 km apart, lie within an ultramafic complex at or near its footwall contact with a banded iron formation. The Windarra deposits are 270 km north-northeast of Kalgoorlie in West- ern Australia which was the centre of a major nickel exploration programme fol- lowing the discovery of nickel deposits at Kambalda in 1966. Surface indications of the Mount Windarra orebody were discovered in 1969 by Mr. Ken Shirley while prospect- ing the Laverton area for Poseidon Ltd. (then NL). The mineralisation was loc- ated by systematic prospecting for goss- anous material associated with aero-mag- netic anomalies and ultramafic rocks. The South Windarra deposit was dis- covered in 1971 by the Union-Hanna- Homestake Joint Venture, by exploring along the strike extension of the mount Windarra ultramafic-banded iron format- ion contact. As near surface deposits are increasingly mined out and pit widths beginto exceed the reach of practical direct-casting stripping machines, high haulage costs can make truck-shovel pre-stripping operations uneconomic. This is compounded because the rate of inflation for diesel fuel oil, lubricants, tyres, etc. exceeds the general rate of inflation. The use of conveyor transport systems, long established in terracemining operations in weak materials, e.g. engineering soils, can provide a viable haulage alternative in pre-strip operations and in some open pit settings. The paper describes the engineering requirements and basic economics of such systems.

The current emphasis within the mining industry to reduce the cost of production has stimulated interest in the field of maintenance and operational reliability of capital intensive mining equipuent. The failure consequences of these machines have major safety and economic implications for a mine operator. The reliability centered maintenance (RCM) approach has been found cost effective for equipment maintenance and for achieving high level system perform- ance by many organizations such as airline, military, chemical, process and manufac- turing industries. In this paper an attempt has been made to describe in brief the basic concepts of a RCM approach, the methods of RCM analysis and its cost effectiveness for maintenance of equipment. Since this approach is comparatively new for the mining industry, suitable examples are given to illustrate the case.

Modern quarrying operations focus attention on blasting operations as a critical component in the overall cost-effectiveness of quarrying. Generally, optimisation of blasting has been linked to the processes of drilling, explosive consumption, secondary breakage, and product haulage to the primary crusher. This approach gives no consideration to the impact of primary crusher feed size distribution on downstream processes, or on the quality (ie shape and strength) of the final product. Blasting operations can be manipulated to produce a wide range of muckpile size distribution. This paper presents the results of studies into the impact of muckpile fragmentation on downstream crushing and screening operations, and includes measurements of primary blast oversize and muckpile fragmentation, together with measurements of size distribution, circulating loads and flakiness for various process streams throughout a quarry processing plant. This paper is an extension of other studies investigating the prediction and control of fragmentation from blasting, and the role of explosive performance in controlling muckpile fragmentation.

Rock bolting and rock-bolting systems depend for success on attention to a number of simple techniques. Failure to appreciate this fact can lead to disappointing results. Careful study of rock characteristics and placement methods can allow a change to highly successful rock bolt per- formance. A number of examples are quoted to illustrate the sig- nificant improvement in results which can be achieved by use of the most suitable combination of characteristics.

This study examined the structures of the Bowen Basin in central Queensland, Australia, by a series of lineament analyses. These studies were carried out using published geological maps, NOAA-AVHRR imagery, and LANDSAT MSS. Comparisons between these various data sources allowed the discrimination of the nature of the observed lineament sets and the time of their development. These data, which have been verified by field work, allowed the development of an integrated structural model of the Basin as an area of compression. This is considered in the light of a plate tectonics framework for northeastern Australia. The study showed that geological structures of great significance to mining operations, such as strike slip faults and large thrusts, could be identified and mapped using a combination of satellite imagery and field investigation. The small scale view of the satellite imagery also facilitated the development of a structural model for the Bowen Basin.

The proposed Lihir open pit gold mine is located on Lihir Island in New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea. The mine will be located within a volcanic caldera, part of which forms the adjacent Luise Harbour. Kennecott Corporation started engineering design work in 1988 and ended in 1993 when a Feasibility Report was submitted to the Papua New Guinea government by RTZ/Kennecott. The project will be managed by the Lihir Management Company. The mining operation will produce approximately 350 Mt of waste and 62 Mt of low-grade ore over the life of open pit mining. Landforms and traditional land use by Lihirians preclude storing mine waste and some of the low-grade ore on land close to the mine site. The mine waste will be composed of hard rock and soft soild like material which cannot be safely used to construct large land waste repositories by truck dumping. Submarine disposal by bottom discharging barges is the only safe disposal method. The barges will also be required to construct a waste platform along the shore for stockpiling low-grade ore. A simulation model of the waste handling system was written in GPSS/H¦ to assist engineers in selecting the optimum size and quantity of barges and loading docks by analysing the interaction between excavators, trucks and barges. The simulation model was written in enough details to model the various functions that will be encountered during mining. Input parameters allowed for variations in the size and number of trucks, shovels, barges and loading docks. Variations in loading, hauling, and dumping times were from user specified distributions. In order to visualise the interaction between the components of the waste mining operation, the simulation was animated using Proof AnimationT""'. It is believed that this is the first application of an animated simulation study for a mine still in the planning stages.

Geological data processing by machine enables'an increased rate of coverage, better supervision and control of field programmes, increased effectiveness of field operators, and vastly improved access to old and new field data. Even a system of restricted felxibility enables a mapping programme to be organ- ized and conducted independent of personnel changes, whilst elimination of much compilation time increases the rate of cover- age such that it relates to mode of transport and geological complexity rather than to personality factors. A machine is useful only if applied to tasks suited to its capabilities, and must be aimed at those types of mapping in which a limited number of attributes adequately define the problem, and the data is of a form suited to coding and is normally collected in sufficient abundance to make compilation wearisome. Machine systems are therefore unsuited to most types of lithological mapping and to most types of exploration in new areas, but have proved useful in many branched of cartographic geophysics (e.g. gravity and magnetics), and in cartographic Geochemistry.

Following considerations of the effect of furnace size on pressure loss, pressure loss in front of tuyeres, gas flow in the lower parts of the furnace, the distribution of the burden and the gas flow in large blast furnaces is examined with particular reference to the burden distribution at the throat and the gas flow at high production rates. Improvement of gas flow is related to application of super-high top pressure and the use of moveable armour. A brief description of the NKK type moveable armour is given and its use in controlling the gas flow outlined. The operating results under controlled gas flow show an increase in production of Fukuyama No. 5 BF from 9,200 tpd to 11,000 tpd with a decrease in the fuel rate from 490 kg/thm to 460 kg/thm.

From the ventilation aspect, there is a basic difference between advancing and ezreating longwall layouts. Particular rroblems with retreating, using differing mining methods and layouts include high gas emissions, spontaneous combustion and -radients. There is an acceptable method of crntrolling the environment at the return end a retreating longwall face without the use a multiple heading system. Incorporated in the design is the facility to practice xtensive methane drainage, thus ensuring a ntrol of the rate of methane emission into the main roadways. The pyroclastic-filled Voorspoed kimberlite pipe has a low grade due to significant internal dilution which translates to a marginal business case. The site, with excavations, tailings dumps and buildings remnant of mining from 1906 to 1912 is to become De BeersÆ benchmark mine in South Africa. In a climate of skills shortages and lean structures, a geological service to optimise exploitation of this complex resource was established. As historical mining removed the higher-grade centre of the pipe, initial production was in the weathered upper benches along brecciated pipe margins. Trenching and blasthole logging before blasts helped to mitigate the effects of the drastic contact deviations that occur when working with an inferred geological model. However, identification of unfamiliar weathered kimberlite and delineation of unmodelled internal waste posed challenges. Efficient grade control by demarcation and allocation of individual truck loads will be vital to continue profitable mining at Voorspoed. Further challenges arose across disciplines. The first yearÆs planned production of mostly weathered kimberlite was processed through a plant designed for VoorspoedÆs unusually competent ore. The high clay content of the weathered material led to clogged chutes and overloaded fines disposal, hampering efforts to commission the plant. Resolving this problem involved mining æout of planÆ to provide a blend of fresh and weathered kimberlite. The calculation of an accurate mine call factor was hindered by a lack of haul truck monitoring, process stoppages and stockpiling in the plant during commissioning. Updating of the geological model to incorporate the contact changes observed in the pit was slowed by the need to first understand how 40 years of exploration data was integrated to create the model. A plan, involving focused mine geology practices, is in place to upgrade a portion of the resource from Inferred to Indicated level of confidence. These challenges are not limited to new mines but will be ongoing as new information is constantly gained at Voorspoed and many mining operations.

Thermal conditions at depths of several k.i'-.r.,etres in hydrothermal systems are a major (actor controlling gold transport into the epithermal environment. Understanding of the coupling of thermal, metal and ligand (HZZ S) sources in the root zones of hydrothermal systems therefore becomes important for the application of tectonic and igneous petrochem- ical studies to regional scale precious metal exploration. The evaluation of favourable conditions in this source zone and application to explor- ation rests on a detailed knowledge of the gases, H2S, CO2 hydrocarbons and other trace components preserved in fluid inclusions. Recent developments in analytical techniques now permit examination of these components and the recognition of complex hydrocarbons in rluid inclusions from epithermal and other lydrothermal systems appears promising for ieoosit-source correlation.
