Research into cemented rock fill at Mount Isa Mines Limited since 1992 is described. The key mechanisms controlling segregation during stope filling with cemented rock fill are described and include the gravity flow mechanism which is described in detail. Examples are provided to demonstrate these mechanisms. Comparisons are made between Mount Isa Mines' cemented rock fill and slurry-based cemented rock fills. Recent backfill stability modelling using a three-dimensional finite clement program is described.

A short overview of the research program of SveBeFo, Swedish Rock Engineering Research, which was founded in 1993 is first given. Then four recent and ongoing projects in rock blasting and explosives engineering are presented in greater detail: 1. Burn Equations for Commercial Explosives. 2. Blast Damage in Contour Blasting. 3. The Role of Gas Pressure in Pit Wall Damage. 4. Fragmentation of Aggregate Rock. The goal of the bum equation project is to be able to control the energy release from explosive charges to the desired part of the expansion curve of the reaction products under various rock conditions. SveBeFo's work has reached the stage where a burn equation for a lab emulsion has been established which can model the influence of charge diameter on the VOD and detonation front curvature in a cylindrical charge quite well. This work now continues with other emulsion recipes. In the blast damage project the goal is to develop techniques and recommendations on how to minimise the blast damage in construction blasting. The project has gained extensive practical knowledge from the blasting of more than 200 holes in a granite quarry under controlled conditions. The cracks in the rock surrounding the contour holes have been cut open and measured. The influence of factors like charge concentration, decoupling ratio, hole and charge size, VOD and time delay in initiation have been investigated. A simultaneous initiation of a group of contour holes with EDD detonators is quite superior to single hole blasts, even when they are timed as closely as 1 ms.

Measurements of the rate of PbO reduction from high lead metallurgical slags were made under laboratory conditions using graphite, a CO-50%CO2 gas mixture and metallic iron as reductants. The results show a transition in rate-controlling step at low PbO contents (i.e. 6 wt.% PbO). At medium to high PbO contents in the slag, the reduction rate was found to be strongly affected by the slag chemistry, temperature and reductant type. The effect of stirring and hence mass transfer in the slag phase on the reduction rate of PbO was found to be insignificant at medium-high PbO contents. Attention is drawn to the importance of chemically controlled reaction rates at the slag-gas interface. Parallels between these results and test work on a 5 tph scale have been briefly drawn.

BHP Diamonds and their joint-venture participants DiaMet Minerals, Chuck Fipke and Stewart Blusson are currently developing Canada's first commercial diamond mine in the arctic barren lands of the Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada. The paper reviews the early history of the project leading up to the discovery of the first kimberlite pipe in September 1991, diamond exploration techniques and the subsequent advanced exploration and development work carried out at the site. In many aspects, this exploration work represented a development project in itself. Coinciding with the advanced exploration work, the project team prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and went through federal review of the project at the highest level. The channel iron deposits (CID) (Ramanaidou, Horwitz and Morris, 1991; Morris, Ramanaidou and Horwitz, 1993; Ramanaidou, Morris and Horwitz, 2003; Morris and Ramanaidou, 2007) are one of the two major iron ore types mined in the Hamersley Province. The CID provided around 41 per cent of the total of 268 Mt of iron ore mined from the Hamersley Province in 2006. The current CID resource is around seven billion tonnes. The CID deposits occupy numerous meandering palaeochannels in a mature surface that includes Precambrian rocks and ferruginous palaeogene valley fill. These palaeochannels are generally less than a kilometre but can range to several kilometres in width and from one metre to more than 100 m thick. The two currently mined CID areas are located:in the western Hamersley Province in the Robe palaeochannel, and in the east in the Yandi palaeochannel. These two major CID channels extend over 100 km to 150 km, with the Robe system up to 5 km wide. The granular ore facies typically contains ooids and lesser pisoids with haematite nuclei and goethite cortices, with abundant goethitised wood/charcoal fragments and goethitic peloids, minor clay and generally minimal porous goethitic matrix. Post deposition weathering is common and produced secondary facies.Ooids and pisoids were mostly derived from the stripping of a well- vegetated deep ferruginous surface. The peloids were derived both intraformationally from fragmentation and reworking of desiccated goethite-rich mud. Minute wood/charcoal fragments in the soil that were initially replaced by goethite and then dehydrated to haematite, formed nuclei for many ooids and pisoids. In addition, abundant, generally small (in situ by goethite within the consolidating CID. This profusion of fossil wood, both as ooids and pisoids nuclei and as discrete fragments as well as the local presence of kenomagnetite suggests major episodic wild fires in heavily vegetated catchments. The goethitic matrix was the result of chemically precipitated iron hydroxyoxides, resulting from leaching of iron-rich soils in an organic environment.

The Gameta Gold Deposit is located on the north-eastern corner of Fergusson Island in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands of Milne Bay Province, PNG, at lat. 9¦ 25' 5, long. 150¦ 47' E or AMG co- ordinate 256740 E/8959000 N (Figure 1). The area is covered by the Fergusson (SC56-05) 1:250,000 scale Topographic Map Sheet and the Koitabu (9079)1:100,000 scale Topographic Map Sheet. The property is held 100% by Union Mining NL (UMG) and lies 105 km NNE of Alotau and 33 km to the ESE of UMGs recently developed Wapolu Gold Mine, a Joint Venture between UMO (51%) and Macmin NL (49%). The inferred resource estimated from surface results and 105 RC drill holes, currently stands at 1.89 million tonnes at 2.6 git gold (1.0 g/t Au cut-off) or 155,000 oz. Evaluation of the property is currently proceeding. To date 111 RC holes have been drilled for a total of 4611 m.

There is currently a world wide interest in coal-oil technology as the search continues for alternative energy sources to reduce the consumption of petroleum crude. An important aspect of this coal-oil technology study is to obtain information on the flow properties of coal-oil slurries. While some work has been reported on the flow behaviour of black coal-oil suspensions, very little work on brown coal-oil suspensions has been reported. In this paper flow charac- teristics of brown coal-oil suspensions for various coal concentration and temperatures have been presented. A Capillary rheometer, designed to handle settling suspension, has been used for deter- mining rheological properties. Brown coal of 0 0725 mm average particle diameter has been used in this work. The oil was a coal derived product having a boiling point range of 234¦- 319¦C, Apparent viscosity of all suspensions was found to increase on storage due to ageing. Ageing might have occurred due to physico- chemical interactions between coal and oil. Flow behaviour of some suspensions changed from Newtonian to non-Newtonian on storage.

The mining, metallurgical, and petroleum industries can be viewed as financial or as social institutions or both. The differences between these two conceptions of their businesses will influence their environmental and social actions. During the next 10-20 years western industry will be subject to a drop in the growth of a more highly educated labour force and to the emergence of holistic economics, new national goals, and a new ecological perspective. The profitability of the mining industry may therefore be influenced by the human side of its business to a greater degree. The increas- ing human, social, and environmental responsibilities can be discharged by improving the miner's equip- ment; by learning to look at situations through the eyes of all those involved; by developing common `languages' which governments and the public can understand; and by mediating where feasible on the international scene.

Computer simulation is a well accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of large and complex operating systems. It is a particularly useful technique in complex operations where there are multiple interactions between the inputs and outputs of various unit operations. It can be utilised during the early stages of a project as part of the business case definition phase or the early engineering phases, or alternatively to help understand the various options available in an upgrade or expansion. With the design of a new processing plant to handle a different ore type at Lihir Gold Limited (Lihir), there was concern that the existing conveying system could separately handle the increased tonnages. A simulation model was constructed which allowed Lihir to examine the impact on the conveying system of the new process plant, as well as investigate the effect of different trucking options. As is often the case, once the simulation model was built, further understanding of the downstream bottlenecks was able to be investigated, including the sizing of critical equipment.

"The primary objective of this paper is to demonstrate a different approach to predicting and verifying mechanical sampling system precision. Early in the year 2011 an experiment was conducted to evaluate the sampling precision being obtained by a three-stage falling-stream mechanical sampling system for coal owned and operated by Peabody Energy. This system collects samples from lots averaging approximately 14000 t being loaded onto rail cars at a flow rate averaging about 9000 t/h. In phase 1 of the experiment, a total of 60 increments were collected in a two day period at preassigned intervals using a cross-belt sampler located on a conveyor belt feeding a silo upstream of the sampling system under evaluation. Coal variability parameters were calculated from the resulting laboratory analysis data using the gauge-invariant fractal model developed by the author.Estimates of precision of the three-stage system as a function of the number of increments were calculated using the variability parameters determined in phase 1. In phase 2 of the experiment, duplicate samples of 30 lots of coal were taken by the three-stage sampling system, enabling calculations of the precision being achieved by the system. Phase 2 precision estimates are in reasonable agreement with those of phase 1. Conclusions drawn from the experiment include the following: Experimental variograms or the equivalent correlograms are essential in understanding sampling issues and for designing a sampling system to meet specific precision requirements. Consensus coal sampling standards provided by ISO and ASTM may be improved by treating all stages of a mechanical sampling system as æsamplingÆ rather than considering downstream sampling stages as æsample preparationÆ, to be treated in a separate part of the document. The coal industry would profit from use of methodology for routinely monitoring the overall measurement precision and the precision of the individual components of measurement: sampling, sample preparation and laboratory testing. This would not only give necessary credence to the measurement results but would also no doubt, lead to more efficient sampling system designs.CITATION:Rose, C D, 2012. Carbothermic reduction of sulphide minerals for achieving a selective separation of metallic species from complex minerals has been discussed by considering the prevailing oxygen potential during the course of reaction. Construction of univariant plots for the reduction of sulphides with carbon monoxide gas or carbon and in the presence of either lime or anhydrous calcium sulphate is the key feature of this work. The theoretical calculations for univariants in the Cu-Fe-S-O system indicated a preferential separation of metallic copper and iron by imposing a chemical potential. This is evident from a logarithmic plot of sulphur dioxide partial pressure against reciprocal temperature. The results are compared with empirical data for the reduction equilibrium. The reduction behaviour of the constituent sulphides are also discussed together with the experimental results and theoretically predicted phase stability diagrams.

The Chatree deposit is located in the central portion of Loei Fold Belt, which extends from Lao PDR in the north through centralThailand to Cambodia in the south. Epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Chatree occurs as veins/veinlets and stockworks with minor breccia in volcaniclastic and volcano-sedimentary rocks of andesitic to basaltic andesite composition and Permo-Triassic age. This preliminary oxygen isotope study mainly focuses on vein quartz of Au-Ag bearing mineralization (Stage 2) and a few samples of late Stage 4 quartz ¦ calcite veins. Quartz from Au-Ag bearing mineralisation has oxygen isotope values ranging from 8.1 to 12.3ë with the lowest values generally occurring at the deeper level (140 m below the surface). The late barren quartz ¦ calcite veins (Stage 4) tend to have higher oxygen isotope values ranging from 11.9 to 12.0ë. The oxygen isotope composition of the Chatree ore fluids were calculated at 250¦C, 300¦C and 350¦C based on homogenisation temperatures of fluid inclusions. The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of the Chatree ore fluid ranges between -1 and 6ë that overlaps with both meteoric and magmatic compositions. This shift in oxygen isotope compositions may relate to processes such as water rock-interaction and/or mixing of meteoric and magmatic fluids. It is interesting to note that the lowest quartz oxygen isotope values are spatially more or less confined to the prominent structures in the centre of the major ore zones. These structures may have been acted as conduits for higher temperature magmatic fluids. The quartz oxygen isotope values increase outwards from the centre of the main ore zones to the margin of the pits possibly due to mixing of magmatic fluids with lower temperature meteoric water. Whole rock oxygen and hydrogen isotope studies are in progress to investigate isotopic trends in the wall rock away from the ore zone. The systematic variation of oxygen isotopes in quartz from the mineralised veins and adjacent wall rocks could potentially be used as a vector to ore. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Cement and resin encapsulated tendons are widely used in the stabilisation of mine roadways. One of the main factors in controlling the efficiency of the reinforcement is the ability of the tendon to generate load in response to rock deformation. The analysis of field data from instrumented reinforcing tendons complimented with extensive laboratory investigations have more accurately defined the mechanisms by which load generation occurs. The role of reinforcing tendon profiles, hole geometry and encapsulation medium properties in controlling the reinforcement stiffness and capacity are discussed. The results of the investigation have implications in both the design of rock reinforcing systems and the optimisation of encapsulation mediums and tendons.

This paper, describing milling practice at Mount Isa Mines, is one of a series covering milling methods and costs that is being published by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior.The Mount Isa concentrator began operations in May 1931, by treating a mixture of oxidized and sulphide ores. Since March, 1935, only sulphide ores have been milled; this change involved major alterations to the flow sheet. The maximum capacity on mixed oxide and sulphide ores was 2,650 tons per day; the present capacity is approximately 1,880 tons of sulphide ore per day. The installation of additional Grushing, grinding, and flotation equipment when completed early in 1939 will increase the maximum capacity of the concentrator to 2;240 tons of sulphide ore daily.All tonnages in this paper are expressed in tons of 2,000 pounds, gallon measurements in terms of Imperial gallons of 277·41 cubic inches, and costs in dollars at the rate of $4 United States currency to the Australian pound.

Results from current NERDDC funded research into the geotechnology of highwall trench mining methods have clear implications for mine planners in the areas of blast design, trench shape, location of the surcharge spoil and remnant coal pillar design.Adoption of successful smooth wall blasting techniques not only removes safety hazards from the trench face, but limits development of bedding partings at the seam contacts that interrupt the smooth transition of stress across the coal seam.

Overlying the coal deposits of the Sydney Basin are several lakes and other bodies of water. These include the Pacific Ocean, Lake Macquarie, the Tuggerah Lakes and the stored waters of the dams of the New South Wales Metropolitan Water Sewerage and Drainage Board. The coal beneath these bodies of water amounts to hundreds of millions of tons. Colliery workings have approached these areas of water and in some instances first 1"orkings of bord and pillar have taken place oi_eshh the water. he problem which now faces mine manage- and other interested authorities involves the determination of the maximum ;mount of coal which can be safely extracted from beneath the water. There are many factors to be considered including the depth of cover, seam thickness, geological details and strata movements.

The long-term outlook Tor Australla's traditional mining products is for flat demand and continuing low prices. This has come about because of three far-reaching changes since earlier boom days: 1. Continuing declines in intensity of usage of basic mine products; 2. The failure of newer western and third world developing countries to realise growth expectations; and 3. Continued production pressure from third world countries (and first-world primary producers) in an effort to earn foreign exchange and rectify trade balances. These trends have led to a general situation of excess supply and weak demand. In this environment, the prerequisites for survival in the mining sector are first-class mines, modern and efficient production methods, low unit costs, aggressive marketing, and products with reasonable operating margins. Many of Australia's mines meet these prerequisites. Following the A$ depreciation and widespread unit cost reductions, most of these mines will be moderately profitable at current depressed commodity prices. They are well placed to benefit from price rises if these eventuate. A new generation of mines is concentrating on a more profitable product range (gold, diamonds, uranium, mineral sands). Australia's balance of trade remains firmly dependent on the primary mining and agricultural industries (Fig. 1). Despite optimistic talk of high-tech developments, tourism and a resurgence of manufacturing, these will remain a small component of Australia's export structure.

The Macraes gold mine in Otago, New Zealand, is developed along the central portion of the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone (HMSZ), which dips gently to the NE, and is traceable over 30 km of strike, before disappearing under tertiary cover. Mineralisation is most intensely developed along the hanging wall shear, which defines the upper limit of the shear zone, although significant packages of quartz vein arrays and mineralised shears occur sporadically beneath the hanging wall shear.The Macraes gold mine is now in its 25th year of operation, well beyond the projected mine life at the time of commissioning in 1990, and currently contains over triple the measured and indicated resource inventory that was defined at start up. The extended mine life and resource growth has been driven by exploration and resource development success, efficient low-cost mining and processing, improving gold price, as well as an ethos of continuous improvement.The emphasis of Oceanagold’s exploration and resource development has shifted over time; from hanging-wall-focused mapping, soil sampling and step-out drilling, through exploitation of previously drilled stockwork mineralisation, to the pursuit of blind, higher-grade underground targets.Mineralisation within the HMSZ remains open at depth, and the regional potential has not been fully tested.
