At 11 p.m. on Tuesday, 24th July 1979, an explosion of methane gas in a three heading development panel at Appin Colliery resulted in the deaths of fourteen men. The explosion followed after or was asso- ciated with a changeover of the ventilation to achieve a central intake between two returns. Investigation by Inspectors was followed by separate Judicial and Coronial Inquiries. Investigational information aimed at understanding the circumstances of the ex- plosion was prepared for the Inquiries. Recommendations following the Judicial Inquiry have been adopted by the Department of Mineral Resources.

The Maggie Hays nickel sulphide deposit is located at latitude 32¦ 15 'S, longitude 120¦ 30' E on the Lake Johnston (SI 51-1) 1:250 000 map sheet. The deposit occurs in the Lake Johnston greenstone belt, in the Southern Cross Province of the Archaean Yilgarn Block, 500 kilometres east of Perth, Western Australia (Figure 1). The remoteness of the Lake Johnston greenstone belt and its poor access, restricted previous exploration activities and the full appreciation of the geology and its Ni-sulphide potential. It was not until 1991, when Forrestania Gold NL commenced exploration activities, that the geology of the ultramafic units and their potential to host significant concentrations of Ni sulphides were clearly established. This paper, which describes the geology and the characteristics of the Maggie Hays deposit, is based on the results of exploration by Forrestania Gold NL and a collaborative research agreement between CSIRO Division of Exploration and Mining and Forrestania Gold as reported by Perring, Barnes and Hill (1994), Perring and Hill (1995), Perring (1995 a and b) and Barnes, Perring and Reilly (1995). A comprehensive description of the geology, petrology and geochemistry of the deposit is being prepared for publication by CSIRO (Pemng, Hill and Barnes, in press).

Problems caused by water discharge from surface mine ventilation shafts can be significant and are usually unforseen. The discharged water is often hyper-saline or acidic and can cause environmental degradation over a wide radius. It can also lead to recurring power pole fires and primary fan breakdowns. A range of solutions to the water discharge problem has been implemented in many Australian mines. In most cases the solutions have been ad hoc, with the overall cost and effectiveness varying tremendously. This paper reviews and contrasts the practicality and effectiveness of the various available remedial options.

Three volcanic sequences of different ages occur close together in the Burdekin Falls area, southeast of Charters Towers in northeastern Queensland. The oldest is equated with the Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor Volcanics, and consists mostly of strongly deformed, regionally metamorphosed rhyolitic lava and minor feldspathic to quartzose sandstone. This unit is overlain by folded but unmetamorphosed Upper Devonian-Lower Carboniferous volcanics (DCv) of the lowermost Drummond Basin sequence. The primary volcanic facies of (DCv) principally comprises andesitic and rhyolitic lavas, and dacitic ignimbrites. Similar volcanics are widespread in the lowest formations of the Drummond Basin sequence elsewhere, and dominate that sequence east of the Anakie Inlier. The youngest volcanic sequence is Late Carboniferous and composed of lower, more deformed, compositionally diverse ignimbrites, lavas and conglomerates, overlain by generally less deformed rhyolitic ignimbrite sheets. The upper part is equated with the Bulgonunna Volcanics which extend 90km south to the Mt Coolon area. The Burdekin Falls area contains an ignimbrite stratigraphy different from that in the south. However, one of the most voluminous ignimbrites (Locharwood Rhyolite) in the southern stratigraphy is also present in the north, enabling the two to be correlated.Each of the three volcanic sequences reflects proximity to eruptive sources. Both the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin sequence and the Late Carboniferous volcanics are largely the products of subaerial eruptions. The former were erupted from several intermediate-composition volcanoes, and the latter from multiple-vent silicic calderas. All three sequences are considered to be prospective for precious and/or base metal mineralisation. Polymetallic massive sulphide deposits occur in the Mt Windsor Volcanics farther west, and many epithermal gold prospects and mines are hosted by the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin, especially east of the Anakie Inlier. The Late Carboniferous volcanic sequence is deeply eroded, and co-magmatic high-level plutons are widely exposed; this sequence may therefore be more prospective for deeper-than-epithermal mineral deposits.

Limitations of current touch-up solders for galvanised steel include coating thickness control problems and poor corrosion and abrasion resistance as well as health and environmental concerns due to toxic constituents such as lead. This paper reports on progress in ILZRO-sponsored research to develop an improved touch-up solder. Encouraging results were achieved in torch soldering trials with experimental zinc-tin-based alloys. Mouldability and coating thickness control were achieved over a practical working temperature range in which the solders consisted of a viscous mixture of solid primary zinc phase particles in a liquid zinc-tin eutectic matrix. The mouldability was dependent on the microstructure of the solder sticks, and optimum structures could be obtained through control of casting solidification rates and by the addition of small amounts of copper. Hardness, abrasion resistance, adhesion and corrosion tests on experimental Zn- (40 - 50 per cent) Sn-I per cent Cu also showed improved performance over lead-tin-zinc solders and compared the effects of tin content within this range. Atmospheric corrosion testing and optimisation of alloy composition and methods of solder stick production are continuing.

The metals titanium and zirconium and their alloys occupy individually unique positions in the catalogue of metallic materials available for engineering applications. Because of the uniqueness of their usage in the aerospace industry, in the case of titanium, and in the nuclear industry, in the case of zirconium, the except- ional resistance of both the metals to the majority of corrosive media is often overlooked. The cost factor in the application of these more exotic metals has, in the past, been a major considerat- ion in the rejection of titanium and zirconium as constructional materials in areas of usage where their superior corrosion resistance strongly favoured them over more conventional metals and alloys. The cost differential, vis-a-vis austenitic stainless steels, for example, is not a trifling matter, being of the order of 6 : 1, when compared on a weight basis. However, if one considers the cost, for, say, sheet product on an area basis, the ratio is redgced to approximately 3.4:1. If one also takes into account the enhanced performance of the more expensive material and the sub- sequent increase in service life and decrease in plant down-time, the economics of the usage of materials such as titanium becomes much more attractive and, indeed, highly competitive,

The geologic settings, geochemistry of host rocks, mineralogy and metal values in modern back-arc volcanic-hosted massive sulphide (VHMS) mineralisation are very similar to those in many ancient polymetallic VHMS deposits. The geology, distribution and styles of seafloor mineralisation in modem back-arc basins, especially the eastern Manus and Lau Basins, southwest Pacific, are compared to VHMS deposits in the Mount Read and Mount Windsor districts of Australia . Based on exploration and research in modem back-arc settings, geologists are now observing the direct analogues of the polymetallic VHMS deposits currently being exploited in ancient back-arc volcanic belts throughout Australia and the world.

The reduction of an ilmenite concentrate with coal at 1000, 1050 and 1100¦C was investigated using thermogravimetry and X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis of the product. The effects of temperature, coal particle size, addition of ferric chloride and preheating of the concentrate in argon on the reduction kinetics and mechanism were determined. The rate of reduction increased significantly with temperature and was enhanced by the addition of the catalyst. The morphology of the iron was primarily determined by the degree of weathering of the particle. Significant coarsening of iron was obtained in the dense particles by the addition of ferric chloride. The sequence of reduction and the enhancement in the rate of reduction by preheating the concentrate in an inert atmosphere are discussed.

The Drummond Basin is a large intracratonic basin which developed in central Queensland during Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous times. It is postulated that the Drummond Basin developed as a foreland basin, to the west of a probable west dipping continental margin volcanic arc and subduction zone. The Drummond Basin sequence has been s,ibdivided into three tectono-sedirnentary cycles. Cycle I forms the base of the sequence and comprises thick sequences of intermediate to felsic volcanics and proximal volcanolithic sediments. The volcanics, particularly in the northeast of the basin, occur in separate sub-basins around what were probably isolated eruptive centres. In contrast, the rocks of Cycle 2 and Cycle 3 have been deposited during episodes of broad, basin wide subsidence. Five major igneous episodes, some of which may be co-magmatic, are recorded in the eastern Drummond Basin and environs between the Late Devonian and the Early Permian. The first and second episodes occurred during the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous and are represented by the volcanics in Cycle 1 and Cycle 3. The third episode involves the intrusion of granitoids of Early Carboniferous age into the Drummond Basin sequence. These occur in the Ukalunda area and are related to gold mineralisation at Ukalunda and Valhalla. Episode four includes the felsic volcanics of the Bulgonunna Volcanics. This episode does not appear to he broadly auriferous but gold mineralisation does occur in possible basal Bulgonunna Volcanics at Mount Coolon. The final episode includes a suite of granitic intrusives which intrude the Bulgonunna Volcanics and which are considered to be co-magmatic with them. These intrusives do not appear to be generally associated with gold mineralisation. Gold mineralisation is widespread in the north- eastern Drummond Basin and environs. It is probable that the gold mineralisation is concentrated in epithermal cells during the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous volcanic cycles. This style of mineralisation appears to be related to tectonic setting in modern analogues.

Improving the quality of the variogram helps to improve subsequent estimation and simulation processes. Two strategies for conditioning data prior to construction of the variogram are investigated using data from the Luce iron ore deposit in Canada. One strategy is the classic approach in which the deposit is subdivided into a set of structural domains. The domains are analysed individually and datapairs are recombined to produce a variogram. The second strategy is reconstruction of the deposit at an earlier stage of its history through unfolding. This involves transformation of the Cartesian coordinates into stratigraphic coordinate system. Improvement in the variogram quality, expressed in a decreased weighted deviation from a fitted model, is observed for both types of data conditioning. This indicates that, for the Luce deposit, application of data conditioning could also help to inform the selection of sampling locations.

The Beaconsfield gold mine processing plant is a complex operation and utilises crushing, grinding, gravity gold concentration, sulfide flotation, bacterial oxidation, cyanidation and zinc cementation to recover gold from the partially refractory ore. This paper discusses the challenges, developments and advancements throughout the processing plant since start up, which have culminated in a 25 per cent increase in the mill throughput over the nameplate design and a concomitant gold recovery increase from 75 to 92 per cent. The improvements have been attained via advancements in mechanical integrity, metallurgical review, process control and operator training, resulting in the current operation producing over 630 000 ounces of gold to date.

The use of computational simulation to predict the performance of existing equipment or for the design of improved mineral processing equipment will be referred to as Computational Mineral Processing (CMP) in this paper. The emphasis will be on solving the governing equations for liquid solid flows in complex geometric domains to obtain, typically, the three-dimensional distributions of velocity and pressure for the liquid phase and the velocity and concentration for the solid phase. The underlying technology, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), is very well-developed in other industries (aircraft, car and chemical) and forms a vital part of product design and analysis. The subsequent design of improved mineral processing equipment may also involve finite element structural analysis (FESA). Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element structural analysis (FESA) are part of the generic discipline of Computational Engineering and Science (CES). Ciment and Scherlis (1993) define CES as `The systematic application of computing systems and computational solution techniques to mathematical models formulated to describe and simulate phenomena of scientific and engineering interest'. Increasing computer power (Kaufmann and Smarr, 1993), is a dominant factor determining the rapid growth of industrial utilisation of CES. This increase is happening at both the supercomputer and the workstation level. Indeed, today's typical workstation, a Hewlett-Packard 735, is as powerful as a CDC 7600, the leading supercomputer in 1970. Future computer architectures are expected to become increasingly parallel (Gartner Group, 1990) allowing a sustained performance of a teraflop (a million megaflops) to be achieved well before the Sydney Olympics in the year 2000. It is recognised that the modem development of most disciplines in the physical sciences rests on the three complementary strategies of experimentation, analysis and computational simulation. As the 21st century is approached the volume of computational simulation, both fundamental and applied, is growing dramatically and the role of experimentation is diminishing. In the area of equipment design, CES provides the following advantages over experimental testing and measurement: 1. lead time in design and development is significantly reduced; 2. CES can simulate conditions not reproducible in experimental tests; 3. CES provides detailed and comprehensive information; and 4. CES is more cost-effective and time-efficient. The ultimate benefit for industry is greater productivity and hence greater profitability. The broader issues in relation to CFD are discussed by Fletcher (1993b). In the five- to ten-year time frame, growth in computer power will make it practical to combine CFD and FESA with optimisation procedures to produce a design process that is almost fully computerised. A strong correlation between the reduction degradation index (RDI) of production sinter and the titanium content of the sinter mix was identified at the Ruukki sintering plant between 2000 and 2004. The titanium distribution in different mineral phases was studied using samples from pot sintering tests. Titanium additions were made using two different materials: rutile and crushed titanium-bearing haematite pellets. While both titanium additions clearly increased the RDI, titanium seemed to favour secondary haematite. The study focused on the effect of titanium in haematite, because haematite is reduced to magnetite in the RDI test. During the haematite-magnetite reduction, reduction degradation was observed. To increase accuracy, the phenomenon was investigated first by sintering and then reducing synthetic minerals under controlled laboratory conditions at the University of Oulu. The effect of titanium oxide in solid solution in magnetite on the magnetite to haematite transformation rate was studied first in order to simulate the final stage of the sintering process. In other experiments, haematite samples doped with 0.5, 2.0 and 5.0 wt per cent titanium oxide were studied using thermogravimetry under a controlled gas atmosphere (CO/CO2/H2/N2). Sintered samples were reduced using the same gas composition as in the RDI test. Polished sections for optical microscopy and SEM-EDS analysis were prepared from both reduced and oxidised samples and unreduced sintered samples. The titanium oxide content of haematite had a clear effect on reduction degradation of the samples. Furthermore, increasing titanium oxide content in solid solution in magnetite radically accelerated the oxidation rate. Similar observations regarding the effects of titanium have been reported earlier, but this was the first time the effect of very small additions of titanium were shown to deteriorate blast furnace burden quality and a reason suggested behind the process.

Through the use of structural analysis programs such as Unwedge and considering the shear strength of applied fibrecrete it can be shown that fibrecrete can provide a higher factor of safety in a ætypicalÆ underground development excavation than standard rock bolts. This paper describes the progression of ground support from an æas requiredÆ component of mining to the use of bolts and surface support as a mandatory requirement. With the mandatory requirement for surface support, fibrecrete has been considered and applied as a secondary feature but simple analysis and practical observations indicate that it may be considered as primary support. The key elements to its implementation are: When is it safe to work under fresh fibrecrete and how do we practically determine this? How much ground support does fibrecrete provide? How can we reduce the cost of fibrecrete? An examination of these questions indicates fibrecrete can be much safer,less expensive and quicker to install than normal ground support elements. This paper explores practical examples from sites where significant benefits have been achieved by mine operators.

Geothermal anomalies of different types occur within distinct geological/structural settings in Papua New Guinea. According to R.F. Herring, geothermal occurrences in Papua New Guinea can be classified into two types, those related to vulcanism (Lihir, Rabaul and other series of islands along the volcanic arc) and those resulting from a regional heat flow probably caused by radiogenic sources, for instance those in the Wau/Bulolo area. The manifestation of this potential source of energy generally coincides with either converging or diverging tectonic plate boundaries. Previous inventories on thermal waters were carried out by vulcanologists from the Rabaul Observatory in the early 1960s. However, these studies rarely included chemical analyses of water and gas emissions and the investigations were carried out in an ad hoc manner, generally as a secondary activity. The most recent investigation on thermal waters was conducted on Lihir Island in connection with the development of the open pit gold mine. These studies included detailed exploratory drilling to a maximum depth of 730 m, and a water chemistry isotopic sampling and analysis programme. The hydrothermal waters were not considered as an energy source but as a hazard during the development stage of the mine. Nevertheless, the geothermal anomaly observed at Lihir includes hot springs emerging along the coastal zones with temperatures that approach 100¦C, steam, and thermal borehole waters with temperatures that exceed 200¦C. Chemical analysis results of thermal fluids from Rabaul, Talasea and other areas in Papua New Guinea generally show high total dissolved solids and low pH. In contrast, recent results from the deepest and hottest thermal source at Lihir shows a neutral pH, a Na-CI-SO4 composition and temperatures above 200¦C. Despite the concentration of chloride being similar to that of sea water, other chemical results and stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopic compositions of thermal fluids imply the source to be mixture of local meteoric water and deep thermal water rather than sea water. Results of geothermal modelling suggests that the total geothermal uptlow is equivalent to 54 MW.

Acupan is considered to be an intrusive centre as several igneous phases have been emplaced in the vicinity of the mine over the past 8 Ma. They include the Lucbuban gabbro, Virac granodiorite, Ampucao dacite porphyry (ADP), Hartwell plug, Itogon plug and the multi-phase Balatoc diatreme. These intrusives have high-K calc-alkaline affinities and are grouped together as the Virac Complex.Porphyry-style mineralisation formed during the final crystallization of the ADP in the late Pliocene, with the deposition of two vein stages from high-temperature hypersaline magmatic-hydrothermal fluids. K-silicate alteration halos surround the first stage of veinlets (stage I); they are surrounded in turn by a propylitic assemblage. This paper forms part of a series of papers relating to the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop and presented to the Fourth Australian Tunnelling Conference in Melbourne, March 1981. The Design of Electrical and Mechanical Services in Museum Station and adjacent Running Tunnels and their relation to Rail.wruy Operation through the Loop are described. The descriptions, while specific to Muscrio Station, are generally representative of those being provided at Parliament and Flagstaff Stations. The Museum Station comprises some 6500 square metres of platform and track area, 5000 square metres of booking hall concourse and entrances and 1200 square metres of offices and plant rooms. The Mechanical and Ilectrical Services for this complex are .imilar in many aspects to those of a large !.gr.hrise city building, but in general the i::;ign is directed more strongly towards :.arety, durability and reliability, and subject to many restraints imposed by L'mitations of space and accessability.

Drum winders have now been built to attain depths of 3000 m and more in a single lift in accordance with the South African Code of Practice SABS 0294, which was introduced at the time of the last hoisting conference in 2000. Since then, this code has not only been followed for several winders in South Africa but was also followed in deep mines in Canada. Design of winders and their braking systems are described in the paper. Koepe winders are in use for high payloads of up to 50 t and to hoisting depths of around 2100 m. As known, the stress range of the hoisting ropes is the key parameter for rope fatigue. However, as per the SABS Code of Practice 0294, relying on static design is not the answer to the question of where the limits are for Koepe installation. The paper describes factors that are recognised to have influence in rope life and suggests definition of new design criteria for friction winders in order to get viable solutions for high-capacity hoisting from deep mines similar to drum hoisting.

Christmas Island contains large deposits of phosphate minerals varying from high-grade calcium-phosphate (apatite) to lower grade iron and'aluminium phosphate (crandallite/millisite). The surface material is dominantly C-grade (Fe/Al) phosphate profiling into B-grade, a variable mixture of C- and A-grade ores, before reaching the high A-grade phosphate (apatite) which overlies a limestone Karrenfeld Base formation. A-grade ore is the basic phosphate used for the manufacture of superphosphate and phosphoric acid, whilst B-grade contains amounts of iron and aluminium which are unacceptable for these acidulation processes. Research into methods of separating the finer iron and aluminium phosphates from the coarser calcium phosphates has led to the development of wash-screen processes enabling recovery of 50 to 60%, as A-grade phosphate. Developmental stages included laboratory investigations, mineralogical studies, pilot tests leading the initial 20 tph prototype production unit and the current 100 tph production wash/screen plant, commissioned early in 1970 at Christmas Island.

It is shown that coke has a major influence on the pattern of operation and on the aerodynamics of the blast furnace and that the physical and chemical characteristics of coke, at each stage in the furnace, determine its ability to satisfy requirements for iron production and coke economy. Analysis of coke sampled from operating furnaces is compared with furnace behaviour. The available data suggests the importance of segregation, strength, size change and chemical degradation of coke on furnace performance. Correlations are presented for coke breakdown ratio as a function of coke rate and hearth diameter which shows that breakdown increases with hearth diameter and with decreasing coke rate. It is also shown that the Micum tests do not reflect the coke strength in a predictable way and that solution reactions appear to play an important role in giving rise to a pitting effect on the cell walls of the coke with the resultant deterioration in coke properties. The catalytic effect of activating substances, such as alkalis, is noted and results are presented which show the effect of carbon solution on the coke strength. The importance of coke in the stack and in the bosh is discussed and flooding results are presented for BSC furnaces which show the probable driving limits for the furnaces considered. It is also shown that coke sampled from different tuyeres in a furnace gives quite different flooding limits. Other applications of the coke test work at BSC are also noted and the relevant objectives listed.
