DATA in this report enable comparisons to be made within the bituminous coal industry and comparison as well with copper and steel in respect to capacity and overdevelopment. The conclusions reached from the data will tend to correct numerous current misconceptions. The data have been prepared by various members of the Coal and Coke Committee of the A.I.M.E., from the most authentic sources avail¬able, and cover the period 1913-1924 wherever possible. CAPACITY AND OVERDEVELOPMENT Table 1 shows statistics for the industry, mainly from the U. S. Geological Survey sources, but partly from the U. S. Coal Commission reports. The mine capacity with equipment and labor as of given date is calculated for each state by obtaining the total man days worked as reported by the operators, and dividing this figure into the total production, getting the production per man day; this figure times the number of men employed times 308 (a theoretical full working year) equals estimated full-time capacity. Two major objections are made to this method-one that the total number of men employed is used instead of the number actually working, and the other that the number of days used only deducts Sundays and five holidays. Covering the first, the same number of men is used in estimating capacity as is used in actual production, and this condition exists at all times. Regarding the second, the opinion is general among coal men that 280 days is as great a figure as should be used, as it is practically impossible to keep any mine working full time at the same daily rate as when it is working part time. The capacity, as estimated on this basis, is much more nearly the true capacity, although even with present railroad efficiency this amount of coal could not be moved.

INTRODUCTION In September 1974 the Resource Appraisal Group of the Branch of Oil and Gas Resources, U. S. Geological Survey, was asked to aid the Federal Energy Administration (FEA) in its legal responsibility to generate by June 1975 an independent appraisal of the undiscovered oil and gas resources of the United States, both onshore and offshore. As a result, the Resource Appraisal Group accelerated its ongoing efforts to develop sound appraisal methods and procedures that would permit the systematic collection and evaluation of basic data from petroleum provinces throughout the Nation. The results of this independent appraisal of the Nation's conventional oil and natural gas resources were published by the U. S. Geological Survey as Circular 725, June 1975 (1). The estimates in this report of undiscovered recoverable oil and gas resources for the United States were made: (1) by carefully re- viewing a large amount of geological and geophysical information gathered on more than 100 different provinces by over 70 geologists within the Survey; (2) by applying a variety of resource appraisal techniques to each potential petroleum province; and (3) by application of subjective probability procedures to group appraisals for each petroleum province. These methods provide a range of estimates which are summarized in terms of low, high and mean values for the various provinces and groups of provinces, or regions. The basic data and procedures used are documented and are being incorporated into a dynamic, data- intensive system that can be upgraded, updated and reevaluated periodically. These data are open to public inspection. The U. S. Geological Survey, I believe, has almost completed a study of the Harney Peak quadrangle, preliminary to the publication of a report on that district. As I was engaged for some months on an investigation of the mode of occurrence of the ore-bearing formation in this area, it has seemed to me timely to make public the results of my study, as a contribution to the consideration of this subject. It seems scarcely necessary to describe the locality and general geology of the Black hills of South Dakota, for since 1846 many have contributed information concerning this region, some of the reports bearing such well-known names as those of Walter P. Jenney, Henry Newton, S. F. Emmons, and C. R. Van Hise, while me have only to glance at Bulletin No. 4 of the South Dakota School of Mines, in which Prof. C. C. O'Harra, of that institution, has given us a bibliography of contributions to the geography and geology of the section, to find that other well-known men have studied the district, and have given us the benefit of their researches. The U. S. Geological Survey has made geological maps of nearly the whole of the Black hills, the only quadrangle yet to be conlpleted being, as stated, the Harney Peak district. During the late summer and autumn of 1910, it was my lot to examine and report on a considerable area in this neighborhood, which once had been prospected, and in some cases exploited, for tin. This paper gives an account of certain geological phenomena, noted at that time, which greatly influenced my conclusions. The predominating formation of the district is pre-Cambrian, represented by a highly-cleaved mica-schist, usually very gar-netiferous, and sometimes hornblendic. In connection with the work of testing structural materials for the use of the U. S. government at the laboratories of the technologic branch of the U. S. Geological Survey at St. Louis, Mo., from September, 1904, to April, 1909, and since then at Pittsburg, Pa., large quantities of sand, gravel, and crushed stone have been needed from time to time, besides samples of building-stone, clays, and other quarry-products. In many instances it has been necessary to obtain single samples of sand, gravel, or crushed stone in lots of a car-load or more. For obvious reasons all these collections have had to be made by a representative of the Survey. As the work progressed it was found essential that numerous geologic data should be gathered regarding the materials collected, in order that they might be properly classified as to kind of material, source, geologic age, etc., and that they might be rated according to quantity available, accessibility to transportation facilities, approximate costs, suitability for special purposes, etc., and that notes might be taken regarding undeveloped deposits of possible value. Furthermore, it mas desired that the selection of materials for tests should be made broadly, so as to cover, first, the representative types of material, and later, if possible, the typical materials of the more important building-centers in the United States. In order to insure a certain degree of uniformity in this work and economy of effort and expense, it was decided that as much of the sampling as was practicable should be done by a member of the geologic branch, whose regular field-trips could be combined conveniently with those necessary for procuring materials for the laboratory. During parts of the last three years 1 have been engaged in field-work of this sort.

INTRODUCTION In 1975 Congress passed the Energy Conservation Act to establish a U. S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) with a capacity of 750 million barrels of crude oil. The most economic storage medium was determined to be salt caverns leached in salt domes in Louisiana and Texas. Salt caverns existed at several sites when the reserve was created. These were obtained by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) and used to initiate SPR oil storage. In order to meet the storage capacity approved by Congress, new caverns also had to be leached. To support the resulting design effort, finite element computer programs have been used to determine the creep closure and structural stability of salt caverns Using site specific material properties including creep models, elastic moduli and fracture data, the finite element analyses have replaced earlier empirical approaches to cavern design. This report presents results of such finite element analyses to determine the best cavern roof shape and the minimum pillar to diameter ratio, P/D. These numerical predictions indicate that the current cavern design is safe. FINITE ELEMENT AND MATERIAL MODELING The finite element program used in this study has existed for approximately four years. PENNSYLVANIA's anthracite region lies in the heart of the richest and most densely populated area of the U. S. Nearly 70 million people live within a radius of 500 miles, in which 130,000 manufacturing plants employ more than 8 million workers. The region comprises some 3000 sq miles and contains 484 sq miles of coal measures, which folding and erosion have divided into four separate and distinct fields, known as the Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle, and Southern. One million people live in the anthracite region proper, and their prosperity depends to a great extent on the anthracite industry, which produces more than $200 million in new wealth for the U. S. each year. Nearly 80 pct of the tonnage shipped out of the region is handled by nine railroads, which depend on this traffic for a large part of their revenue. It follows that the economic health and the very existence 0: this industry is of real concern not only to the region itself but also to the state of Pennsylvania and the country as a whole. Anthracite mining is one of the oldest mineral industries in America. About 1760 burning rock or stone coal was discovered on the hillsides of northeastern Pennsylvania. Within a few years a systematic search for coal bed outcrops was under way, and hand mining was begun. At first production was very limited, since anthracite was difficult to burn and was not readily accepted as a fuel. Pennsylvania anthracite is one of the densest and hardest of all coals, and its content of volatile matter is low. Consequently it does not ignite easily and it burns without smoke. About 1808 Judge Fell of Wilkes-Barre burned anthracite in an open grate fireplace and demonstrated proper handling of an anthracite fire. From

Large deposits of manganiferous iron ores, representing several million tons of metallic manganese, occur in the United States. The Minnesota deposits of such ore are of outstanding importance because of their size, state of development, ease of mining and proximity to the Great Lakes, which permits water transportation to steel centers. In view of the fact that our steel industry requires large quantities of manganese, for which no satisfactory substitute has been found, and because our reserves of ferro-grade ore are comparatively small, the development of methods that will make our large deposits of manganiferous iron ores available as a source of ferromanganese is an important problem. Realizing the importance of this problem, some years ago the North Central Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Minnesota School of Mines Experiment Station undertook jointly the development of methods for recovering the .manganese content of manganiferous iron ores in a form suitable for the production of ferromanganese, the 80 per cent. alloy indispensable in producing steel. Two types of manganiferous iron ores have been described in previous reports.' The brown ores are higher in iron and lower in manganese than the black ores; the black ores are more siliceous but contain less phosphorus. The utilization of the iron content of the brown ores in the production of steel appears to furnish the best basis for their treatment. The method of attack has been to work out modifications in iron and steel practice so as to recover manganese in the form of slag comparable to ferro-grade ores. The greater part of the experimental work has been conducted with a 6-ton blast furnace and a 1/2-ton basic open hearth. The Grand Isle sulfur mine is located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately seven miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Jefferson Parish, La. The deposit is on acreage covered by oil, gas, and mineral leases originally issued in favor of Humble Oil & Refining Co. by the State of Louisiana which were continued, maintained, and redesignated by the U.S. Department of the Interior after passage of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. The sulfur deposit was discovered in 1949 when Humble Oil & Refining Co. penetrated more than 200 ft of sulfur-bearing limestone in a zone between 1813 and 2075 ft below sea level. In 1954, Humble drilled ten more sulfur prospect holes, eight of which encountered sulfur ore. On September 19, 1956, Freeport Sulphur Co. acquired from Humble Oil & Refining Co, the sulfur rights underlying the tracts, and the actual design of the installation began the same month. The first structural contract was awarded in December 1957 and offshore erection began in June 1958. The initial phase of construction has been completed and production by the Frasch process commenced in April 1960. The estimated total cost of the project is $30 million, of which $8 million is the extra cost incurred by the necessity of offshore operations. More than $22 million was expended before production was started. GEOLOGY OF DEPOSIT Grand Isle is the third largest sulfur deposit in the U.S. The orebody embraces several hundred acres, but its outer limits are yet to be defined to the northeast, east, and south. Most Gulf Coast sulfur deposits occur in a caprock mantle of calcite (referred to as limestone), anhydrite, and occasionally gypsum, which covers the apex of an intrusive mass of salt. Commercial quantities of sulfur are usually confined to the calcite or limestone member. Most often such limestone is completely enclosed by dense anhydrite below and impervious sediments above, which effectively form a closed reservoir. The depth of the Grand Isle orebody ranges from 1800 ft to 2500 ft below sea level. Within the present boundary, the sulfur-bearing limestone varies in thickness from 220 ft to 425 ft, while the sulfur content varies an average of about 15 pct in the leanest hole to an average of about 30 pct in the richest. Rock containing less than 5 pct sulfur is not classed as ore, and holes assaying less than 20,-000 long tons per acre of sulfur in place are not considered commercial offshore. The sulfur enrich-

FRIEND recently remarked that the career of Scott Turner is characterized by Work and Wild -A Ducks. To these might be added Accomplishment and Persistent Fishing. All of these elements are manifestations of his character. The diversions-hunting and fishing-are in the nature of the proverbial trolley conductor's holiday, for many of Turner's years have been spent in the outdoors, often in distant lands, as in Spitzbergen, where the ducks pictured below were bagged. The election of Scott Turner to the presidency of the Institute marks the culmination of a quarter century of membership, during the last two years of which he has been vice-president. He was born at Lansing, Mich., on July 31, 1880, and received his A.B. at the University of Michigan in 1902, with a B.S. and E.M. at the Michigan College of Mines in 1904. Since then he has been granted two honorary degrees, D.Sc. from the Colorado School of Mines, and D.Eng. from the University of Michigan, but he still prefers to be called "Scott" rather than "Doctor." Government service was not a new experience for Turner when he was appointed Director of the U. S. Bureau of Mines by Secretary Hoover in 1925, for his first employment after graduation was as Field Assistant in the U. S. Geological Survey in Oregon and Idaho. This was followed by work in Tombstone, Ariz.; then his first foreign engagement in 1905-6 as superintendent of the San Pablo Gold Mining Co. in Panama. Various field experiences followed, though there was an interlude in work of a kind that few mining engineers ever experience. This was in technical journalism, for in 1906 he was

Bureau of Mines publication, and because the paper was published in detail as Technical Publication No. 144, and is available as a separate at the Institute, it is impossible to include here more than the following brief extract.] Problems Being Studied The selection of the first problems to be studied was based largely upon the following very practical questions asked by several of the largest operators in the Mid-Continent field. 1. What are the causes for the formation of excessive amounts of bad thick oil on properties that are being repressured with compressed air and how can this trouble be prevented? 2. Why, in some areas, does the oxygen in the air injected into an oil sand during repressuring operations apparently change to carbon dioxide? Is carbon dioxide formed by the oxidation of some of the oil in the sand'? How can the formation of inert or low B.t.u. casinghead gas, loaded with nitrogen, carbon dioxide and oxygen, be prevented? 3. What percentage of the oil originally present in an oil sand can be recovered by the ordinary methods of operation when the gas originally dissolved in the oil is the main propulsive agent? 4. What percentage of the amount of oil produced by ordinary methods can be recovered under average conditions by repressuring a so-called depleted oil sand? 5. What are the relative propulsive efficiencies of compressed air and natural gas in repressuring operations? 6. What are the practical advantages of pressure maintenance and early repressuring as compared with late repressuring?

Manganese compounds occur in many mineral forms widely distributed throughout the crust of the earth. The most important of these commercially are the oxides which are usually found as irregular masses, but in some places (notably U.S.S.R.) occur as extensive beds of varying thickness and purity. The principal sources of ore have been U.S.S.R., Ghana (the Gold Coast of Africa), India, Union of South Africa, Belgian Congo, French Morocco, Cuba, Brazil, and Mexico. New developments of ore are being conducted in Brazil, British Guiana, French Equatorial Africa, and Northern Rhodesia. The production of the United States normally meets less than 10 pct of domestic manganese consumption. Manganese ore (35 pct or more Mn) is used principally by the ferrous metallurgy industry for production of manganese metal, ferromanganese, and other manganese alloys for use in production of steel ingots and castings. Some manganese is used in the nonferrous industry as an alloying element and cleanser in aluminum alloys, aluminum bronze, constantan, manganese bronze, Monel, Everdur, nickel-chromium resistance alloys, and nickel-silver. The metallurgical uses consume about 97 pct of the total manganese ore requirements of the United States. The balance goes principally for the manufacture of dry cells and for chemicals, with limited amounts for ceramic products, plastics, welding rods and varnish. The Materials Survey on Manganese, compiled in 1952 for Materials Office National Security Resources Board by the Bureau of Mines and Geological Survey, provides an excellent review of resources, reserves, specifications, uses, mining, beneficiation, metallurgical processes and deposits, and is worth referring to for greater details. Mineralogy and Geology The more common manganese minerals with typical characteristics are listed in Table 1 in order of importance. [ ]

Evidence is presented which confirms previous findings that models of solution strengthening depending solely on lattice parameter changes are incomplete. Direct evidence for the Suzuki interaction of chemical effects was obtained from alloys with constant lattice parameter, for which solution strengthening was nearly independent of temperature from 300° to 20°K. SOLUTION hardening principles have been reviewed recently by Parker and Hazlett.' In addition, the interactions of dislocations and solute atoms were reviewed by Cottrell.' It is not proposed to review this information again here, but to refer only to those details which are pertinent to the developments which have occurred since these papers were published. Literature Survey To set the stage, it has been known for some time that solid solutions are stronger than the pure parent metals, and that the strength increases with increasing amounts of alloying element. One of the most extensive earlier investigations was that of Lacy and Gensamer,3 who reported that the solid solution strengthening of iron is a power function of the composition, that the relative strengthening is a function of the solubility limit, and that the rate of strain hardening is a function of the amount of solution hardening. Thus, the slope of the plastic portion of the stress-strain curve increases with increasing yield strength. An approach to the development of principles resulted from work by Gulyeav,4 who reported that the strengthening effect of solid solution alloys is periodic in character when plotted as a function of the atomic number of the solute. A more quantitative approach was to relate the amount of solution hardening to the lattice parameter of a solid solution. This was done quite early by Norbury,5 and later by Brick, Martin, and Angier,6 Frye and Hume-Rothery,7 and French and Hibbard. This relationship is only approximate in character. The next development was to relate the amount of solution hardening to lattice stress, as proposed by Frye and co-workers.9 They calculated what they called ionic overlap from the lattice parameter changes represented as a change in volume, using Bridgman's hydrostatic compression equation. The resulting correlation was somewhat improved as compared to the simple correlation with lattice parameter. The next step was carried out by Dorn, Pietrow-sky, and Tietz,10 who suggested an effect of valence differences in addition to the effect of lattice parameter. Their proposed parameter shows flow stress as a single valued function of the concentration and a relationship involving these two atomic variables. In addition, they contributed new data on the temperature dependence of solution hardening which indicated that it was a strong function of temperature for aluminum alloys. Allen, Schofield, and Tate11 carried the valency effect even further by reporting data indicating that with a given solvent element the stress-strain curve is a function of electron density, entirely neglecting the size factor, which varied by a factor of two. This evidence led to a quantum mechanical calculation by Cottrell, Hunter, and Nabarro,12 based on the formation of a dipole around an edge disloca-

The effects of variations of carbon content on the constitution and properties of sintered WC-Co alloys were studied. The grain growth of tungsten carbide during sintering was measured and it was shown that it takes place mainly by solution and reprecipitation of the carbide in and from the binder at the sintering temperature. It was found that the decomposition of W3C03C by carburization during sintering is responsible for the formation of very large grains. THE properties of sintered WC-Co alloys are critically dependent upon their final composition and structure. Slight changes of cobalt and carbon contents and small variations of grain size result in marked changes of mechanical properties and performance of products. Previous investigators have studied the microstructure as a function of composition' and have dealt with the influence of cobalt upon properties.' The present work is concerned with the effect of carbon content upon constitution, microstructure, and grain growth during sintering, as well as upon the physical properties of sintered compacts. Phase Boundaries at the Sintering Temperature The WC-Co section through the ternary diagram W-Co-C has been studied by Wyman and Kelley,' Takeda,V andford and Trent," and Rautala and Norton." Two phases, namely WC and a cobalt-rich solid solution (P), appear in the sintered structure if the carbon composition corresponds very nearly to the theoretical carbon content of WC (6.12 pct C). But small deviations from the ideal carbon content will bring about the occurrence of either graphite or the double carbide W,Co3C (7) . The 7 phase was long believed to be metastable, this conclusion being based mainly on the work of Takeda. More recent studies have shown that it is a stable phase of the ternary system,"5 but the actual phase boundaries have not been established and there has been some discussion as to whether or not the 7 phase occurs at some stage of sintering in the fully carburized alloys." In view of this uncertainty it was thought advisable to undertake an investigation of the phases present during the sintering of WC-Co alloys. Commercially available tungsten, cobalt, and carbon powders were used in the present study. A typical analysis of impurities in a sintered compact is reported in Table I. The desired carbon compositions were attained by varying the amount of carbon added to the tungsten during carburization and controlling the composition during sintering by packing the compacts into beds of mixed alundum-carbon powders of suitably selected ratios. The alloys were sintered in a hydrogen tube furnace at 1400°C, then brought to equilibrium at the temperature under investigation and quenched in water. The high temperature phases were identified by metallographic and X-ray diffraction techniques. The samples were etched with a 10 pct solution of alkaline potassium ferricyanide. The phase boundaries, established by metallo-graphic examination, are shown in Fig. 1, which is a vertical section through the ternary diagram at 16 pct Co. The temperatures of the invariant planes, at 1298" and 1357°C were established by Rautala and Norton. Phases present at 2200° and 1500°F (1204° and 816°C) were identified in sixty wrought developmental austenitic alloys possessing wide compositional variations. The bases were iron-, cobalt-, and nickel-rich as well as a base with equal parts of each. There are only two structure types previously not found in similar alloys, viz .-the Co3 W and the Fe3Al types. A molybdenum-rich monocarbide decorates dislocations with unusual clarity. Other results provide correlations between alloy composition and phas e precipitation. Grouping intermetal -lic phases into three general classes : I) geometrically close-packed, 2) topologically close-packed, and 3) bcc derivatives, the nickel base prefers the first, the iron base the second, and the cobalt base the third—each base tending to shun the other two classes. Thus, a crystal-chemistry effect previously noted by Laves and Wallbaum can he expanded for these Group VIII elemental bases. There appear to he no quaternary or higher -order structure types requiring more than three atomic species. AFTER studying aging reactions in many diverse commercial austenitic alloys1-4 as a function of detailed time-temperature variations in heat treatment, it became apparent that matrix composition influenced structure types and morphologies to a large extent. These tendencies were related4 to a crystal-chemistry effect uncovered by Laves and Wallbaum.5,6 We have now directed our efforts to exploration of the whole ternary field, covering the standard base elements—iron, cobalt. and nickel— with 10 to 20 pct Cr and moderate amounts, up to 10 pct, of the usual alloy additions. Solutioning and aging treatments were held constant with major emphasis on X-ray identification of microconstituents. The possible existence of exceptions to the Laves-Wallbaum effect, or any new phases, was sought. Phases appearing in austenitic alloys can be classified as geometrically close-packed (gcp), octahedral or nonoctahedral interstitial compounds, topologically close-packed (tcp), semicarbides, and bcc derivatives. Crystal structures of the first four classifications can be visualized as a dense packing of semirigid spheres of different sizes, while the bcc derivatives represent a less efficient packing of spheres. The Laves-Wallbaum effect involves the gcp and tcp phases. Gcp phases possess both tetrahedral and large octahedral interstices; examples are Ni3Ti(n), NiSAl(y'), Co3W(E), and other ordered AB3 compounds where B atoms are smaller than A. Their precipitation is primarily intragranular, presumably coherent with an austenitic matrix, and a chief source of strengthening. Most octahedral interstitial compounds (e.g., CbC, Tic, TiN, Mo2C) have a gcp lattice of large metal atoms which accommodate small carbon or nitrogen atoms in the octahedral interstices. The compound Ti2SC, previously designated Y phase or T phase, can, with some reservation due to its partial co-valency, be placed in this category.7 The nonoctahedral interstitials (e.g., M7C3, Fe3C) represent close-packings of spheres in structures that provide larger triangular-prism interstices for carbon, since the octahedral interstices formed by chromium and iron atoms are too small. Tcp phases possess only tetrahedral interstices; examples are Laves (Fe2Ti, Fe2Cb, Fe2W...AB2), p(Fe7MO6, Co7W8.... A8B7), and (FeCr, Co2Cr3)

This paper presents a correlation for predicting the critical pressures of gas-solvent-reservoir oil systems of the type encountered in gas and solvent injection processes. Experimental data from 14 systems were used to develop the correlation which expresses critical pressure as a function of composition, C7+ mol weight, and C7+ characterization factor. Critical pressures predicted by the correlation for the 14 gas-solvent-reservoir oil systems have an average deviation of 2.8 per cent of the experimental values. The correlation war used to study a wide variety of other hydrocarbon mixtures reported in the literature whose critical conditions are in the range of interest in oil recovery work (100 to 280F and 2,000 to 6,000 psia). Critical pressures predicted by the correlation had an average deviation, expressed as per cent of experimental value, of 5 per cent for 20 miscellaneous mixtures from the literature, and 6.4 per cent for I7 methane-butane-decane mixtures reported by Sage and Lucey. INTRODUCTION Predicting critical points of hydrocarbon mixtures is an important part of phase behavior calculations. If the critical point can be predicted for a specific mixture, the separation between the bubble-point and dew-point regions will be defined, and physical properties of the mixture can be calculated by using the principle of corresponding states. Numerous correlations for predicting critical points of hydrocarbon mixtures have been published. Six of these correlationsl-8 were for light hydrocarbons, and two correlations7,8 ere for high boiling-point petroleum distillates. Organick9 And Eilerts" presented correlations which combined the published data from both light and heavy mixtures, and these correlations became the only available methods for predicting critical pressures for wide boiling range mixtures. In the course of the authors' work on secondary recovery by gas and solvent injection, experimental data were obtained for 14 mixtures of dry gas, ethane-propane-butane solvents, and various reservoir oils. The critical pressures and critical temperatures of these gas-solvent-reservoir oil systems were in the range of 1,900 to 4,800 psia and 180 to 265F. The critical pressures predicted for the 14 mixtures by the correlations of Organick and Eilerts had an average deviation from the measured values of about 13 per cent. The authors felt that it was necessary to develop a better correlation for engineering calculations and the resultant correlation, which is presented on Figs. 1 and 2, predicts the critical pressures of the 14 mixtures with an average deviation of 2.8 per cent. The validity of the correlation was tested by applying the correlation to other hydrocarbon mixtures reported in the literature. This subject is discussed later in the paper. The authors feel that there is also a need for an improved critical temperature correlation for gas-solvent-reservoir oil systems. However, developing a critical temperature correlation is a significant study in itself and is not included in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL DATA The compositions and critical points obtained by the authors for 14 gas-solvent-reservoir oil mixtures are shown on Table 1. The methane concentrations in these mixtures varied from 20 to 63 mol per cent. The intermediate hydrocarbon group, consisting of ethane, propane, and butane, varied from 20 to 64 mol per cent, and the concentration of the C,, fraction from 10 to 20 mol per cent. The physical properties of the C,, fraction covered the range from light, paraffinic, nonasphaltic (Mixtures 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10) to heavy, aromatic, and asphaltic (Mixtures 13 and 14).

The object of this paper is to describe and discuss the progress that has been made, up to the present date, in the development of the modern by-product coke-oven. There are few members of the Institute who have not heard more or less of the by-product oven-installation, and there are many whose acquaintance with it is intimate and practical. In the course of time, an increasing number of investigations on jet cutting all kinds of material, such as rock,1,2,3 metal,4,5 and wood6 have been reported to serve various applications. A number of papers have been published on these subject, 7,8,9 some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'.7 Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making holes, only conventional drilling fluids have been considered. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (1 ½ in. ) and full-scale bits (6 ½ -9 5/8 in. ) . In view of the application of jets in deep holes, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids.
