The effect of the condition of friction upon the ultimate unit compressive strength as determined between the compressed faces of precisely machined coal specimens and specially prepared testing platens has been examined. Reductions of 30 to 40% in the ultimate unit compressive strength of these model coal pillars have been verified when lubricants areused between the faces as compared to non-lubricated faces. Increase in unit compressive strength due to confinement at each of three levels of friction appears to follow generally the widely accepted "1/2 power law", i.e. S - C (L/T)1/2 where S is the unit ultimate strength, C is a constant dependent on the coal being tested and the coefficient of friction acting at the compression surfaces and L and T are the least width and thickness of the specimen, respectively. Results suggest that the surface condition of both the specimen and platens should be mentioned in detail in conjunction with compression testing, for although the term (L/T)1/2 is adequate for all practical purposes, the coefficient C is directly dependent on the condition of interfacial friction, all else remaining constant. One phase of the investigation of the confining effect of friction on the ultimate unit compressive strength of small coal specimens has recently been completed at the School of Mines of West Virginia University. The efficient control of ground is of fundamental importance to successful mining operations and the design of support pillars has always presented the mining engineer with a difficult and intriguing engineering problem. Since about the turn of the century, many investigators have performed extensive laboratory tests on small coal specimens in efforts to solve some of the perplexing problems of strata control and pillar action in coal mines. A detailed review of this work would serve no purpose here, but a brief mention of the more significant contributions is in order. Muller16 was perhaps the first to illustrate the effect of confining pressure on the strength of coal specimens in compression. His work has recently been more carefully expanded by the experiments of Murrell17 in Great Britain. Rice and Enzian l9 observed that as the size of cubical test specimens increased, the unit compressive strength decreased. These observations were later supplemented by Lawall and Holland, 13 by Greenwald4,5 et a1 at the U. S. Bureau of Mines, by Gaddy3 as well as by Steart,22 Millard15 et a1 and Evans2 et al. Gaddy3 seems to have been first to quantify this relationship with his equation: S = K/vd , where S - ultimate unit compressive strength (psi), K = a constant dependent on the coal, and D =edge dimension (in inches). Holland7 concluded that the strength of coal as affected by lateral dimensions and thickness could be expressed as where K = a coefficient dependent upon the coal, L = least width of pillar (in.) and T = thickness of pillar (in.). Data supplied by this formula have been compared to the estimated stresses in pillars that had been standing for long periods in coal mines and in the cases so far studied the results indicate that the formula predictions are sufficiently accurate for engineering purposes (Holland11 ). This equation therefore is believed to be the simplest and most accurate tool available at the present time for approximating the strength of a coal pillar (over a specified range of L/T) in situ. Gold wires, 5 mil in diam, are found to creep viscously up to approximately 5.5x106 dynes per sq cm around 1300°K. Beyond this point, an additional slip mechanism appears. The average coefficient in the viscous range at these temperatures is 18.9 ± 7x10 12 poises. This observation and other visual observations made during the experiments agree with Herring's predictions. EARLY creep studies by Chalmers on single crystals of tin produced some of the first experimental evidence to suggest that metals deform viscously under very light stresses. That is to say, over a small initial stress range up to 150 g per sq mm, the single crystals of tin elongated at a rate proportional to the stress. The proportionality constant between strain rate and stress is by definition the coefficient of viscosity. Chalmers named this range of proportionality the microcreep range. One of the first theoretical attempts to explain the microcreep phenomenon was given by Kauzman,' who applied Eyring'sQ eneral statistical mechanical theory of shear rates to creep data then available. From the rate theory, he deduced the general hyperbolic sine law for shear rate on the assumption that the distortion of the reaction path due to stress is negligible and that the system is an infinite continuum. In order to fit the available data to the equation, it was necessary to assume that creep occurs by shear of rather large blocks of material, rather than by an atomistic shear process as in diffusion. The size of the shear units was shown to increase with increasing temperatures and lower stress, or lower strain rates. In applying the hyperbolic sine law equation to the microcreep data of tin, it was shown by Kauzman that the unit shear blocks became quite small, which suggested to him that microcreep might be a self-diffusion process. Making this an assumption, Kauz- man reworked the rate theory and arrived at an equation where the shear rate is proportional to the stress. In the form of viscosity coefficient, the equation is: o- _ \LkT V = 2qAlA where u is the stress; S, the shear rate; X, the distance in shear direction moved by flow units relative to one another in the unit process; L, the distance between layers of units of flow; T, the absolute temperature; k, Boltzmann's constant; qAL, a constant proportional to the size of flow units; and kT A, the diffusion coefficient = ------kTe-Q/RT = K X2 h Kauzman applied the expression to molten lead with a fair degree of success, the calculated viscosity being low by a factor of four. For solid lead the result is 5000 times too high. Taking q = 1, and X = dA = L = 21 = nearest neighbor distance, Udin, Shaler and Wulff8 found the equation low by a factor of lo7 for solid copper. On the basis of the discrepancy in lead, Kauzman indicated that microcreep is probably not a simple diffusion process of molecular shear units, but one involving preferential diffusion paths, or even that diffusion in solids does not involve shear at all. Cottrell and Jaswon4 treat the microcreep phenomenon on the basis of slow moving dislocations and apply it to Chalmers' data on tin with fair success. Nabarro Suggested a microcreep model in which mass movement in the direction of pull is effected by the diffusion of holes. A scale based on existing data for the mutual solid solubilities of metals in binary systems has been compiled. This scale is useful for estimating the relative magnitude of two solubilities, provided that these two metals do not form a continuous series of solid solutions. In his classic work on the theory of metallic solid solutions, Hume-Rothery proposed that, other things being equal, a metal of lower valency should be regarded as more likely to dissolve one of higher valency than vice versa. He called this the "relative valency effect". Later he found that the application of this general principle was limited to the three univalent metals: copper, silver, and gold. In dealing with alloys of these metals with metals of higher valency, Hume-Rothery stated, it is usually found that the solid solution of the univalent metal is of the greater extent.&apos; The question of whether there is a systematic trend in comparing the relative magnitude of mutual solubilities, if valency is not considered a criterion, naturally arises. The present paper proposes a "mutual solid solubility" scale on an empirical basis. The order of its arrangement is determined by the relative magnitude of mutual solid solubilities. Some applications of and inferences from this scale are given. ORIGIN AND SCOPE OF THE SCALE An extensive survey of over 400 binary phase diagrams shows that, with certain exceptions and within certain limitations, metals can be arranged in the following order: Na Zn Cd Ga Bi Ge Sb As Hg Sn Si Mg Li Ba In Tl Pb Al Ca Be Mn Cr Re W Mo Cu V Ta Fe Ru Cb Co Ti Hf Ni Os Zr Ir Pt Au U Rh Ce Pd Ag Th so that a metal higher on the scale tends to have a higher solubility in a metal lower on the scale than vice versa. some experimental solubility data are given in Table I. These data, unless otherwise specified, are taken from Hansen and Anderko.6 Throughout this paper, the term "solubility of A in B" is taken to mean the maximum solid solubility of A in B in atomic percent, while the maximum solid solubility of B in A in atomic percent is called "reciprocal solubility". The exceptions found in the above-mentioned survey are: Al-Ag system, 20.34 at. pct Al in Ag, 23.8 Ag in Al; Mg-Pb system, 5.9 Mg in Pb, 7.75 Pb in Mg; As-Sn system, vanishingly small amount of As in Sn, a large As primary solid solution; Cd-Hg system, Cd in Hg <Hg in Cd; Mg-T1 system, 5(?) Mg in ßT1, 15.4 T1 in Mg; W-Ti system, -21 W in ßTi, -25 Ti in W; Zr-Ag system, probably small amount of Zr in Ag, 20 Ag in ßZr.7 Considering the large number of examples, the exceptions are few. It is remarkable that metals may be so arranged without considering other factors such as size, crystal structure, electronic structure, and so forth. A limitation to the use of the scale is the fact that it cannot be tested for two metals forming a continuous series of solid solutions. In the year 1948, more than ever before, the coal industry established itself on the threshold of a new and exciting future expansion. While production did not equal the wartime and peacetime peaks of 1944 and 1947, it was, in review, a good coal year. During the latter part of the year a combination of mild weather, record stock piling, and general business slackening reduced coal demand to the extent that marginal mines suspended operations, while mines remaining active found it necessary to renew their attention to producing better products at lower operating costs.

The forecast of continued growing demand for phosphate, chiefly for fertilizer, has caused a world-wide rush for deposits by a variety of companies many of which have never before mined phosphate rock. The newcomers are diversifying into this growth industry on the strength of certain capabilities. Among these are the availability of investment capital, mining or processing know-how and marketing experience. Product tie-ins have motivated some into the search. Companies with excess sulfuric acid or potential for making it are in this category. This acid is the most commonly used for dissolving phosphate rock to make phosphoric acid. Base metal smelting companies are prime candidates in this field with by-product acid from roasting processes. Producers of "sweet" natural gas, such as those in Louisiana and Texas, have a potential for recovering low cost hydrogen from excess gas production for the manufacture of ammonia, the main source of nitrogen for fertilizer. "Sour" gas producers, such as those in the Canadian fields, are making sulfuric acid that is combined with western U.S. phosphate to make fertilizer materials. The presence of one or two steel companies in the look-see for phosphate deposits is based on by-product ammonia from coke-oven gas.

IF the observation of our British friends is true that Americans put new records in bigness above everything else then the 150th meeting of the Institute was not the grand success it seemed to be. Just why the attendance slumped a little this year is anyone&apos;s guess, but the favourite explanation seemed to be that half the country is planning to come to the New York World&apos;s Fair this summer and that two trips from the hinterland to the me- tropolis, with another to San Francisco of course, can hardly be justified with the present condition of the stock market and the prices of the products of our mines. Certainly, some were pre- vented from coming too by the epidemic of respiratory afflictions that was rampant in February. Unfortunately. several succumbed after they had reached New York.

The properties of some heavy liquids which can be used in sink-float separations are discussed with major emphasis being given to the halogenated hydrocarbons. Data are presented on density, viscosity, thermal characteristics and the effects of moisture and temperature on the corrosiveness of the liquids towards various materials of construction. The toxicity of these materials, the hazards involved in handling them, and the procedures for handling them safely are also discussed. True liquids have certain advantages over colloidal suspensions for sink-float separation of minerals which makes their use especially advantageous when close separations, fine particle sizes or water-soluble minerals are to be treated. For best separating results, the medium should have an easily controlled, uniform, stable density. Here, true liquids have the advantages of allowing closer control of density and of not requiring agitation to maintain a uniform den- sity in the equipment. Low viscosities are desired in a separating liquid so that rapid separations of fine material can be made. Many liquids have lower viscosities than the colloidal suspensions at operating gravities of 1.4 to 5.0. For economic reasons and to prevent contamination of the product, the separating medium must be easily and completely removed from the ore. Normally, true liquids must be more completely removed than the cheaper suspensions and thus cause more problems in this area. The fact that the medium should not react with the minerals, air, water or the common materials of construction limits the choice of liquids which can be used, but many are available which are sufficiently stable. A more serious objection to the use of true liquids is that many of them present a toxic hazard to operating personnel and users of the product. Most true liquids are toxic to some extent, but modem knowledge of toxicity allows us to recognize the hazards inherent in handling them and enables us to design around them. Three types of true liquids are available for this use: 1) Halogenated hydrocarbons cover the gravity range from 1.2 to 3.3. They are generally more volatile and less viscous than the other liquids.

THE crystal orientation in silicon iron that has been given a particular treatment described by Goss,1 has been studied by Goss, by Bozorth2 and by Sixtus,3 but their results do not agree and are almost entirely qualita-tive. The following pages give a description of the orientation of the crystals in the material as determined by means of X-rays and expressed graphically in a pole figure. The treatment consists of hot-rolling the material into strip and then giving it two cycles of cold reduction followed by recrystallization. This produces remarkably good properties in the rolling direction, the product having a maximum permeability in this direction of more than 25,000 and a permeability at 16,000 Gauss of more than 2200, It is now generally agreed that Goss&apos;s original conclusion&apos; that the crystals in the final product are randomly oriented was incorrect, since Bozorth2 and Sixtus,3 using different methods, have shown that there is a decided preference in orientation. Those writers, however, expressed their results only in terms of one or more ideal orientations with deviations therefrom.

THE use of digital methods for generating crystallo-graphic data is well-established and many programs are now available. Transmission electron microscopy usually requires a knowledge of the electron diffraction pattern which is obtained by plotting a planar section through reciprocal space. With cubic symmetry these sections are very easily produced, but with hexagonal and lower symmetry systems considerably more labor is involved. Johari and Buchanan1 have written a Fortran program for generating standard projections and along similar lines we have produced a short but completely general program for generating any section through reciprocal space. The required inputs are the lattice parameters and angles for the real crystal. The Miller indices of the direction [U, V, W] parallel to the electron beam are then specified and the program will generate the Miller indices of the plane normals perpendicular to [U, V,, W] up to some specified integer. A subroutine can be inserted to test for forbidden reflections if desired. We have used such routines for fct and hcp crystals. As each permitted index is generated it is printed or punched out and no storage arrays are utilized in the computer. The normal diffraction pattern corresponds to the zero-order Laue zone, but with thin crystals or crystals of large lattice parameters the higher-order Laue zones may contribute to the diffraction pattern. Accordingly the program will generate successive Laue zones and project them onto the zero-order zone. The output of the program first lists the zone axis [C, V, W] and the Laue zone, and then gives a list of permitted reflections and the corresponding XP and YP coordinates of the reciprocal lattice point in angstroms-&apos;. In addition, ZP, the perpendicular distance of the reciprocal lattice point from the (U, V, Ur) plane in reciprocal space is given, as is the reciprocal interplanar spacing. In the case of the zero-order Laue zone ZP is zero. A diffraction spot from the higher-order Laue zones will be very slightly displaced from the computed coordinates as its position in an actual pattern is given by projection along the diffracted beam2 and not along [u, V, w]. For any given electron wavelength this correction could be readily incorporated into the program, but as it only amounts to -1 pct it was decided to leave the program in its most general form, i.e ., a computation of points

Wartime geological studies by the U. S. Geological Survey and subsequent drilling carried on by the Bureau of Mines disclosed new ore in the Illinois-Wisconsin zinc field. As a result, several companies are carrying on drilling programs to locate and define new ore bodies. The Vinegar Hill company, which operates a custom mill to handle ores from various sources, now employs about fifty men in production at their Andrews mine. The ore is usually found in a 200-ft horizon below the surface. Water problems are not serious. Commercial-grade ore ranges up to 8 and 9 per-cent zinc and the cut off is approximately 41/2 percent.

A method of stability analysis of underground opening by the limiting equilibrium approach is presented. The Coulomb shear failure criterion is employed to find possible fracture surfaces and to evaluate the shear strengths along them. The normal stresses required for the calculation of shear strength, and the shear stresses for the calculation of total shear force along the fracture surfaces, are obtained by the finite-element method of plane-strain analysis. The factor of safety against Coulomb shear failure is calculated as the ratio of the shear strength to the shear force along a fracture surface, similar to the practice in slope stability analysis. Four shapes of openings are analyzed, with three ratios of horizontal lithostatic stress and four coefficients of internal friction. The critical fracture surfaces found by this method of analysis are consistent with the arching of roofs and slabbing of ribs commonly observed.

The effect of ultrasonic energy transmitted through a liquid on chrysotile asbestos was investigated. Ultrasonic energy was effective in fiberization of chrysotile crudes as well as standard grades of milled asbestos fibers. Treated samples of several grades of milled fibers had increased wet bulk volumes and decreased settling and filtration rates compared to untreated fibers. Ultrasonics may be a method for fiberization of chrysotile without decreasing length or use of chemical additives that alter surface properties. Cavitation of the liquid on the surface of fiber bundles is believed to be the cause of the fiberization. It was found that ultrasonic energy greatly increased the rate of precipitation of latex on asbestos. When chrysotile asbestos fibers require additional opening or fiberization, the usual method employed is some type of high speed impact or grinding to open the fibers and produce a larger surface area. These methods always cause some degradation in length due to breaking of fibers. In addition, the efficiency of mechanical methods decreases as the diameter of fiber bundles decreases. Chemical methods have been proposed and it is claimed that fiberization down to individual fibers of 200-300 A diam is possible with some wetting agents. However, large amounts of reagent are required, approximately EDWARD MARTINEZ is with Central Research Laboratories, American Smelting and Refining Co., South Plain-field, N.J. TP 63H226. Discussion of this paper, submitted in duplicate prior to Mar. 15, 1964, will appear in SME Transactions, September 1964, and AIME Transactions, 1964, vol. 229. 50 pct of the weight of fiber treated, and some of the wetting agent remains on the surface of the chrysotile and cannot be removed by any solvent which does not destroy the asbestos.&apos; This investigation was directed at determining whether ultrasonic energy transmitted through a liquid would be effective in fiberizing chrysotile asbestos. Samples of asbestos crudes and commercially milled fibers were treated; settling and filtration rates of treated and untreated milled fibers were obtained. EQUIPMENT A Westinghouse Corp. ultrasonic cleaning system WEHH was used in this investigation. See Table I for a breakdown of this ultrasonic unit. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Fiberization of Chrysotile Crudes: Samples of chrysotile crudes were pulled apart with tweezers so that coarse bundles of fiber approximately 1/16 in. in diam were obtained. The bundles were put into a bottle with 200 ml of methanol and the mixture placed into the ultrasonic tank for 30 min at a power output of 1200 w. The test was repeated using water instead of methanol. During the irradiation it was noted that the surfaces of the bundles were being fiberized. The liquid eventually became cloudy with dispersed solids. Fig. 1 is an electron micrograph of the fibers, some reduced to unit dimensions, and a fine material released by the ultrasonic energy. The platy particles in Fig. 1 were identified by electron diffraction and differential thermal analysis as brucite, Mg(OH)2, which must have been intergrown in the chrysotile crudes. Electron micrographs of bulk specimens of chrysotile have shown a fine material filling the interstices between tubular fibers.2,3 Electron diffraction patterns of the fine material collected after ultrasonic treatment indicate that it is amorphous.
