THE year 1930 resembled the preceding one in the coal industry in continuing the era of falling prices and 'of the abandonment of unprofitable mines. Practically all coal prices fell, and in the steam sizes during the last half of the year this was particularly true, due to the small industrial demand. No new mines of any size were opened in the bituminous coal industry, but there was a steady increase in the number of cleaning plants of all kinds built in all fields. It is estimated that at least nine million tons per year were added to the previous total of washed coal. The largest washing plant started during the year was that of the Buckeye Coal Co., at Nemacolin, Pa., with a capacity of 650 tons per hour. Fig. 1 shows - the mixing-bin, conveyor galleries, washing-plant and skip hoist, and Fig. 2 the 120-ft. Dorr thickener for collecting the 48-mesh material from the wash water. Dryers are used for drying the steam coal product. The following statement by J. R. Campbell shows the effect of cleaning on Pittsburgh coal in Greene County: "With the advent of the 650-t.p.h. efficient washing plant in Greene County at the Nemacolin mine of the Buckeye Coal Co., it has undoubtedly been demonstrated that the potential coking-metallurgical coals of the county can be brought within the pale of the highest grade high-volatile coals for steel manufacture. A few months' operation indicates that 9% per cent ash in the raw coal can be easily reduced to under 7 per cent ash in the washed coal and the sulfur from 1.60 per cent in the run of mine to 1.20 per cent sulfur in the washed coal.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a process for removing SO2 from stack gases. The process comprises absorption of SO2 in an. aqueous solution of sodium citrate, citric acid, and sodium thiosulfate, followed by reaction of the absorbed SO2 with H2S to precipitate sulfur and regenerate the citrate solution for recycle. A pilot plant was operated at The Bunker Hill Co. lead smelter in Kellogg, Idaho, to assess the feasibility of using the process for flue gas desulfurization. Nominal capacity of the pilot plant, which treated .tail gas from the lead smelter sintering furnace, was 1699 standard meters cubed per hour (15 degrees celsius) of 0.3- to 0.7-percent-SO2 gas yielding about 272 net kilograms of sulfur per day. The pilot plant was operated for about 4500 hours and produced more than 45 net tonnes of sulfur. The operation demonstrated that (1) more than 95 percent of the SO2 could be removed from the lead smelter sintering furnace tail gases, (2) regeneration of the citrate solution with H2S and precipitation of sulfur in conventional stirred vessels was readily controlled and highly efficient, (3) the precipitated sulfur could be continuously recovered as a 99.5-percent-pure product by kerosine flotation and melting, and (4) the 77- to 79-percent-H2S gas used for sulfur precipitation could be readily produced from pilot plant product sulfur, natural gas, and steam. Projected operating costs, including capital charges, for a citrate plant, installed at a 118 000-tonne-per-year lead smelter and treating 49 271 standard meters cubed per hour of lead smelter sintering furnace tail gas, are estimated to be $384 per tonne of sulfur.

Discussion of the paper of, RICHARD H. RICE, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 89, May, 1914, pp. 721 to 743. S. G. VALENTINE, Oxford, N. J.-In a paper read at the New York meeting of the Institute last February I presented some notes taken from our experience with the turbo blower operating on a blast furnace. In connection with Mr. Rice's very interesting paper there are a few items that might be of further practical interest. The question of the reliability of this type of blower will naturally be presented. In this connection we would say that our turbo blower has been in practically continuous use during the present blast, which was begun June 7, 1912, with only three interruptions for repairs of any consequence. Soon after blowing in there was developed a tendency of the blower to surge or pulsate. This occurred on operating at a point considerably below the normal capacity of the machine, and was checked with comparatively little trouble by throttling the intake slightly and taking up a small lost motion on the governor connections, a legacy of the previous blast that had not been attended to. All this required only a few hours' time. In. March, 1914, the furnace being banked on account of a blizzard that cut off our freight deliveries for five days, the opportunity was used to replace the carbon packing on the steam-turbine shaft and to repack the steam inlet valves. In June, 1914, the blower was off 8 hr. to replace an oil ring and scrape a bearing. With these exceptions we have made continuous use of the machine and find we can depend upon it with entire safety as a piece of machinery.

5. Crystallography. - The subject of Crystallography includes the description of the characters of crystals in general; of the various forms of crystals and their division into classes and systems; of the methods of studying crystals, including the determination of the mathematical relations of their faces, and the measurement of the angles between them; finally, a description of compound or twin crystals, of irregularities in crystals, of crystal- line aggregates, and of pseudomorphous crystals. 6. Definition of a Crystal.- A crystal * is the regular polyhedral form, bounded by smooth surfaces, which is assumed by a chemical compound, under the action of its intermolecular forces, when passing, under suitable conditions, from the state of a liquid or gas to that of a solid. As expressed in the foregoing definition, a crystal is characterized, first, by its definite internal molecular structure, and, second, by its external form. A crystal is the normal form of a mineral species, as of all solid chemical com- pounds; but the conditions suitable for the formation of a crystal of ideal perfection in symmetry of form and smoothness of surface are never fully realized. Further, many species usually occur not in distinct crystals, but in massive form, and in some exceptional cases the definite molecular structure is absent. 7. Molecular Structure in General.- By definite molecular structure is meant the special arrangement which the physical units, called molecules, assume under the action of the forces exerted between them during the formation of the solid. Some remarks are given in a later article (p. 22 et seq.) in regard to the kinds of molecular arrangement theoretically possible, and their relation to the symmetry of the different systems and classes of crystals.

The rate of coarsening (Ostwald ripening) of copper precipitate Particles in an a-iron matrix has been studied in three Fe-Cu alloys containing 2.3, 4.0, and 5.4 wt pct Cu in the temperature range 730° to 830°C. The kinetics of Ostwald ripening ohevs the law as deduced by Lifshitz and Wagner so that matrix diffusion controls the process. The equilibrium shape of the particles is that of rods with hemispherical caps, and is due to the BOTH Lifshitz and slyozov and wagner3 have recently solved the complex problem of determining the rate of coarsening of an assembly of precipitate particles. Both workers, although using somewhat different mathematical approaches, arrive at the same equation for the relation between the mean radius 7 of a distribution of spherical particles and the bulk solubility co, diffusivity D in the matrix, large anisotropy in the copper/a iron interfacial free energy (y,/y, = 4). A Lifshitz -Wagner equation, modified for both the nonsphericity of the diffusion field and the reformulation of the Gibbs-Thomson equation for the case of nonsphencal particles, is derived. Using the modified equation, the calculated values of the mean radius are smaller than those observed by a factor of about one -half. absolute temperature T, gas constant R, surface free energy y of the precipitate/matrix interface, and the time t of aging: where V, is the molar volume of the precipitate and v is a stoichiometric factor. Wagner's treatment is restricted to the case of spherical particles growing in a liquid matrix where strain energy is not a factor. Lifshitz and slyozov have discussed the effect of anisotropic particle shapes and internal strains on the rate of coarsening. Oriani4

During the latter part of 1916 and the early months of 1917, due to war activities, there was a threatened shortage of coal which resulted in panic among consumers and a rush to obtain coal at once at any price. As a result of this insistent demand for immediate delivery, prices were bid up by the consumers to unprecedented heights; spot coal which had previously been selling at from $1.50 to $2 per ton was bid up to $5, $6, and, in exceptional cases, as high as $7.50 or more per ton. Then when the April, 1917, contract period arrived, contracts could be made only at prices ranging from $3 up to $5 and $6 per ton for the year's delivery. This condition caused such a demoralization of the business, and SO much complaint, that some action to regulate prices was considered essential by the National Administration. Lane-Peabody Agreement In May, 1917, a committee under the chairmanship of F. S. Peabody, of Chicago, was appointed by the Council of National Defense, through Mr. Lane, to consider the whole question of bituminous coal. This committee, with the Secretary of the Interior, Mr. Lane, after numerous meetings and long negotiations with the operators throughout the country, announced on June 29 an agreement between the Committee and the producers, fixing a tentative maximum price for bituminous coal throughout the country at $3 per net ton f.o.b. mines, to which was added 25 c. for selling commission to wholesalers. This plan was based on the idea of fixing a maximum price, high enough to greatly stimulate production, with the expectation that the laws of supply and demand would, with ample production, operate to maintain fair and just prices for coal throughout the country.

During the past 4 or 5 years, much has been added to the detailed geologic knowledge of the Mesabi Range. This has not been in the direction of discovery of any new fundamental facts, but of detailed study, subdivision and correlation of different parts of the whole formation and of individual orebodies. Prior to this time, mining engineers in the district were so engaged with the commercial interests of exploring and developing orebodies that close geologic study and subdivision were done in a few instances only. The demand for refinement of work in .this direction has led 'the engineers of the Oliver Iron Mining Co. to do extensive structural subdivision and correlation in all exploration work during the past 4 years. Such work has become a commercial necessity rather than a scientific refinement, and at the present time is being extended to all parts of the Range. In the summer of 1914, the author of this paper wrote a series of articles on the orebodies and special features of the Mesabi Rangc, which was published in the Engineering and Mining Journal, issues of July 17 to Aug. 7,1915. Since that time studies of subdivision of the iron-formation have been extended considerably. The principal feature of this paper is the presentation of the subdivisions of the iron-formation. To this is added a discussion of the relations of the orebodies to the gentle folding and fracturing of the formation, and special features of the Range. The outline will be as follows : I. In connection with an investigation in this laboratory on the high-zinc side of the copper-zinc system, it was observed that well developed segregate structures of the Widmansttten type were formed when a secondary phase precipitated from the solid solution of copper in zinc. This paper presents an analysis of the crystallographic relationship between the segregate and the solid solution matrix. The data to be presented are an interesting addition to the literature on segregate structures in that the plane of segregation is one of the less densely populated planes. In agreement with the generalization of C. H. Mathewson and D. W. Smith' the plane of segregation in the matrix contains the direction of closest atomic packing of the lattice. Furthermore, the matrix and the segregate are both hexagonal close-packed, which has not been reported hitherto in the 1iternture.l The increasing commercial importance of zinc alloys containing copper makes this fundamental study of value to the metallography of zinc alloys. Zinoeich Copper-zinc Alloys Copper enters into solid solution with zinc to at least 1.8 per cent at 400" C., according to W. M. Peirce.3 The solubility is less at lower temperatures. Thus a solid solution of copper in zinc, saturated at an elevated temperature, will precipitate the excess copper in a separate phase at a lower temperature, conditions of concentration, time, and temperature being suitable. The nature of these two phases has been established by the X-ray method of crystal analysis. Westgren and Phmgmén4 and also Owen and Preston5 have shown that the solid solution eta (7) is of the substitu-tional type with copper atoms replacing zinc atoms on the hexagonal

BINARY and ternary alloys of iron, nickel and cobalt respond to annealing in a magnetic field by a characteristic change in the shape of their hysteresis 100p.l,2 An increase in retentivity and a decrease in coercive force produced by the magnetic treatment cause the hysteresis loop to approach the appearance of a rectangle. Materials with a rectangular hysteresis loop have made possible the contact-rectifier³ and have greatly improved the performance of pulse transformers4 and magnetic amplifiers." In the best material presently available for these applications, a 50 pct nickel-iron alloy," the desired characteristics are achieved by aligning the preferred crystallographic directions of magnetization along the rolling direction of the tape. The objective of the present study has been to produce rectangular hysteresis characteristics in materials with inherently high saturation. Iron-cobalt alloys, exhibiting saturation values up to 24,000 gausses' appeared to offer promise for the magnetic annealing technique, because they remain magnetic to very high temperatures,8 exhibit favorable magnetostriction properties: and show zero crystal energy at 42 pct cobalt.10 Among the ternary iron-cobalt-nickel alloys,7,11 response to heat treatment in a magnetic field is unfortunately limited to alloys having rather low saturation values.' It appeared interesting nevertheless, to study a series of compositions connecting the optimum composition (50/50) of the binary iron-cobalt system with the "Perminvar" composition (30 pct Fe, 25 pct Co, and 45 pct Ni). Very recently, R. Smoluchowski and R. W. Turner," have shown that under certain circumstances magnetic annealing can produce oriented recrystallization. A combination of this technique with the domain orientation utilized in the present study might well result in further improvements. The process of recrystallization has not as yet been explained satisfactorily. Some definite conclusions could be drawn from recent investigations, such as, for example, that recrystallization is a process of nucleus formation and crystal growth1 and that the orientations of the nuclei correspond to some fragments of the original crystals, which have been considerably distorted during deformation.2 There are, however, a number of metals and alloys crystallizing in the face-centered cubic system, which form a particularly simple orientation if recrystallized as a sheet.3 Such a shect is almost a single crystal with the cubic axes parallel to the rolling, transverse, and normal directions of the sheet. This preferred cubic or (100) orientation of the recrystallized sheet has been considered to be very different from the rolling structure of the same metals,4 but there are two reasons why this last supposition remains open to controversial discussion. The first reason is academic: In practically all cases except the one mentioned above, close correlations and similarities between rolling and annealing orientations have been observed; for instance, in iron and steel sheet.6 Secondly, no deformed metal actually forms a simple orientation. In any thoroughly investigated case a number of different orientations and considerable scattering or deviations from the ideal orientations have been found.6 It is generally true that investigations on single crystals have shown that a definite orientation is approached in stretching or in compression of an originally undisturbed crystal.7 In the special cases, however, where the initial orientation was close to an important crystallographic direction that differed from the final "ideal" orientation, the resulting orientation changed very little by deformation, staying somewhere in the vicinity of the initial orientation.8 Such deviations

Forty-three years ago a record for low cost was made at the Spanish mine, in Nevada county, California. In 22 days of September, 1887, there was mined 2796 tons of ore at a cost of 37.5 cents per ton, of which 32.4 cents was for labor and 5.1 cents for supplies. The mill treated this ore for 23 cents per ton, of which 12.3 cents was for labor and 10.7 cents for supplies. Thus the total operating cost was 60.5 cents per ton. The yield was $1.16 in gold per ton, leaving a profit of 56 cents per ton, or 48 per cent of the yield. The mine was an open-cut in a schist formation on a hillside and the work was done by Chinese laborers that were paid $1.40 per shift. The ore was soft, and could be ground effectively in four Hunting- ton mills, supplemented by silvered amalgamating plates.* The engineer in charge was F. W. Bradley, a student from the University of California. As has been indicated, the conditions were unusually favorable in respect of softness of ore, accessibility to the mill, metallurgic simplicity, with cheap labor and power, but even at that the results were so remark- able as to attract general attention, which, as might be expected, was magnified, for advertising purposes, by the manufacturers of the Huntington mill, the firm of Parke & Lacy, at San Francisco. The record made at the Spanish mine therefore found its way into many textbooks on mining published at that time. The editor of the 'Mining and Scientific Press'† (at that date, Charles G. 7.4-1. Introduction. Ever since explosives were discovered and developed for mining purposes, there has existed the problem of determining what effect the air and ground vibrations resulting from blasting have on structures of various types. This problem is especially acute for surface operations such as open pit mines, quarries, and construction projects that are in the proximity of residential districts, scientific laboratories, or other vibration-sensitive structures. Because the general public is directly involved in the blasting vibration problem, it has been of major concern to local, state, and federal governments, as well as to mining and construction companies, explosive manufacturers, insurance companies, and scientific investigators. Consequently, many investigations have been conducted, both in this country and abroad, on the effects of air and ground vibration on residential and other structures. E. H. Rockwell made some of the first studies in this country on the vibrations produced by blasting and the effect that these vibrations have on structures (18). In his publications, he stressed the need for measuring the vibrations from quarry blasting in order to establish the level of vibration as a function of charge size and distance. The concept of a damage criterion for structures was developed shortly thereafter, and a displacement of less than 0.03 in. was considered safe. During the period from 1939-1942, the Bureau of Mines conducted an extensive investigation on the problem of seismic effects of quarry blasting. This work, summarized in Bulletin 442 (20) was the first major effort for establishing damage criteria for residential structures based on experimental data. An acceleration of less than 0.1 g was considered safe, 0.1 to 1.0 g was caution, and greater than 1.0 g was damage. This work

BARITE, naturally occurring barium sulphate, is the chief barium mineral that is produced commercially. Barite is also called "barytes," "heavy spar," sometimes "baryta" and, locally in Missouri, "tiff." Pure barite is white, opaque to transparent. It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, frequently with twinning. Impurities cause a wide variation in color, commonly buff, gray and white with irregular reddish iron stains. Less frequently found are shades of yellow, green, blue, brown, and black. The rock is brittle and breaks with an uneven fracture, although specimens from some of the residual deposits, particularly in Missouri, appear to have a cleavage due to the separation of the different layers of deposition. The hardness varies from 2.5 to 3.5 on Mohs' scale and different localities are said to produce either "hard" or "soft" barite. This generally refers to the ease of grinding of the product. The specific gravity of pure barite is 4.5 and this will vary downward, depending on the impurities present. The mineral has a white streak and a pearly to vitreous or sometimes stony luster. Pure barite contains 65.7 pct BaO and 34.3 pct SO3. Witherite, native barium carbonate, is not mined in the United States at the present time although a number of occurrences have been reported. A small quantity of witherite has been removed from a mine at El Portal, California, but the area high in witherite was small and soon depleted. The bulk of the deposit is predominantly barite. Great Britain is the world source of witherite and small quantities are imported into the United States. DISTRIBUTION OF DEPOSITS Occurrence of barite is widespread; it has been reported on all the continents and in all the major countries of the world. Large jacking test procedures that have been applied to obtain static in-situ rock properties (Ref. 1) have shown that the in-situ rock modulus and strength can be considerably less than what would be obtained from laboratory tests on intact samples. This trend is also expected to be true for dynamic properties, but few dynamic in- situ rock property tests have been conducted. During the past several years, high explosive test procedures have been developed to simulate the airblast and direct induced ground motions (Ref. 2) produced by nuclear explosions . These test procedures load large volumes (up to 10 7 f t3) of the earth with stress levels sufficiently high to produc5 feet of particle displacement over surface areas up to l0 5 ft2. This paper discusses some of the data obtained, and the implications of these results for our understanding of the dynamic response of in-situ rock. DESCRIPTION OF TEST PROCEDURES As shown in Fig. 1, the High Explosive Simulation Technique (HEST) consists of a cavity of uniform height bounded on the sides by a soil berm, above by an overburden of uniform thickness, and below by the test bed on the earth's surface. Horizontal racks of detonating cord are placed in the cavity and detonated at one end of the test bed. This detonation produces an explosive wave that propagates across the test bed, loading the earth with an overpressure pulse that decays with time because of the compression and lifting of the overburden. Since 1964, there have been approximately 40 such tests on test bed areas ranging from a few hundred to l0 5 sq ft., simulating peak overpressure conditions between about 100 and 6000 psi and specific impulses between a few and over 100 psi-sec.

THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the relative merits of the large 31/8 in. machine and the small 21/4-in. tappett machine in driving development-headings ; and although the . data here presented were obtained from cross-cut headings alone, experience has shown that the results are equally true in drifting, raising and winning. Recently we drove two parallel cross-cuts through the same formation, using a 3k-in. machine at the breast of one cross-cut., and a 2k-in. machine of the same make at the breast of the other. The results of this work afforded an ideal comparison, since in both cases the headings were advanced through rock practically of the same hardness and breaking-properties ; the amount of sludging was equal, and there was no difference in the condition of the steel or the machines, in the air-pressure or in the experience of the operating-crews. Some operators in the Cripple Creek district contend that there is ground which cannot be handled with the small machine, the holes being too small to contain enough powder to pull the ground, etc. The results obtained in working the property of the Portland Gold Mining Co., however, show that the ground worked by them does not fall in this class. During a period of two years there have been driven, with the small machine, 4 miles and 308 ft. of development-headings, through a diversity of ground, including Pike's Peak granite (a coarsely porphyritic type of granite), highly indurated, andesitic or phonolytic breccia, true massive andesite, trachytic phonolyte, tuffas, and along dikes of decomposed basalt and hard phonolyte; in every instance a satisfactory record was made. The headings here described were driven through highly indurated, andesitic breccia, having a hardness of from 5.2 to 7.2

THERE are a number of effects that can cause material damping or internal friction. Some of these are frequency dependent, such as the thermo-elastic effect' and the stress-induced ordering.' Others depend on the amplitude of vibration, i.e., the damping related to the motion of dislocations3 and that due to magneto-mechanical hysteresis.' While many of these effects have been studied, only the magneto-mechanical effect has found extensive practical application. It is the principal source of damping in the current blade material in steam turbines.A magneto-mechanical hysteresis loop is seen in Fig. 1. If an unmagnetized, polycrystalline wire of a material exhibiting magneto-mechanical hysteresis, such as an Fe-14 pct A1 alloy, is twisted in torsion, a relation between shear stress and shear strain y is observed as indicated. The stress-strain curve does not follow Hooke's law -dashed line. Instead, the strain y increases nonlinearly and partly irreversibly, due to the motion of ferromagnetic domain walls,* until a critical stress is reached, which in this case is about 3,500 psi. If the applied stress is raised further, the strain appears to increase linearly and reversibly in accordance with Hooke's law, since all domains are now aligned in easy directions of magnetization nearest to the direction of the applied stress, and plastic flow has not yet started noticeably. On removing the applied stress, a remanent shear strain y, is observed, which is related to the irreversible magnetostriction of the material.' The energy dissipated in the material during a stress-strain cycle is proportional to the critical stress t, and the remanent magnetostrictive shear strain 7,. TAYLOR and Floyd's"" work in establishing phase diagrams based on the elements Ni-Cr-Ti-A1 has led to an understanding of the precipitation hardening mechanism in alloys based on these elements. Nordheim and Grant4 concluded that in simple alloys, and where the aluminum to titanium atomic ratio was such that less than three out of five aluminum atoms were replaced by titanium, the precipitate on aging is the face-centered-cubic Ni 3A 1 phase, called They further found that increasing amounts of hexagonal ? phase, Ni3Ti, precipitated from these alloys when the titanium content exceeded the solid solubility of both matrix and Ni3A1. For alloys of Ni-Cr-Ti-Al, in which the titanium and aluminum contents each ranged from 0 to 4 wt pct, the titanium-rich was superior for strengthening to either pure ?' or 7. It was also noted that the combined titanium plus aluminum content (atomic pct) was a direct measure of the high temperature strength and overaging temperatures for these alloys.4 The present investigation was undertaken to extend existing data on precipitation hardening in the more complex commercial alloys containing higher titanium plus aluminum, and with significant quantities of cobalt, molybdenum, and carbon. Experimental Procedure Reforging of As-Received Bar Stock—The alloys were received as ground, forged bar stock. Chemical analyses and the as-received bar diameters are shown in Table I along with the ASTM grain size after the various treatments. All stock except the Waspaloy was reforged to % in. diam to gain material and to facilitate machining of stress-rupture specimens. The property of the Spring Valley Coal Company, situated in Bureau county, Ill., comprises something more than 30,000 acres of coal-lands, on which have been opened four mines, designated as Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4. Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 are plans of the first three; and Fig. 7 is a view of the surface-plant at No. 4, the workings of which it is not necessary to illustrate, as this mine has been practically merged in No. 2. No. 4 shaft is only 500 feet from No. 2, and both are ventilated by the same fan, and are in the same circle of air-supply. In speaking of No. 2, we now include No. 4. The system pursued in all the mines is " long-wall advancing," and the shafts are all vertical. The seam worked is locally and commercially known, in the Illinois series, as No. 3; but its position in the geological series is that of No. 2. It averages in thickness about 42 inches, arid has no partings, but mines in rectangular lumps, which stand a large amount of handling before breaking. An analysis made from Colliery No. 1 gave the following : Per cent. With the expansion of open pit operations, belt conveyors are going to be used in the 13 608 to 18 144 t/h (15,000 to 20,000 stph) capacity range, which calls for a review of some of the horsepower calculation methods. This paper presents methods (based on German research data, field tests and theoretical considerations) for the evaluation of the Ky factor in the CEMA formula for belt conveyors of large carrying capacity, which fall beyond the limits of the data given in tables in the CEMA book. (The CEMA limits are 407 N\\m (300 lb ft) and Tave = 7.3 Mg (16,000 lb). At these large loads, the impression resistance of the belting on the idlers plays a major role, which in turn influences the magnitude of the drive horse power required. An example will illustrate the order of magnitude difference of the horsepower values obtained by using a conventional calculation method and the suggested method, as well as the beneficcia1 influence of the 4-roll idler in comparison to the standard 3-roll unit for a large caving capacity belt conveyor. This paper concerns itself with the analysis of the resistance to motion of belt conveyors, emphasizing the evaluation of the frictional resistance to motion due to load and belt pressure on the idlers and the flexing resistance of the belt and material when passing over the idlers. In the case of long and heavily loaded belt conveyors, the aforementioned resistances reach extremely high values calling for close analysis of the phenomena, presently not calculable with normally used formulas. This paper establishes correlation between experimental and empirical data presenting practical formulas a tool for the designer of high-capacity belt conveyors. The application of the formula is illustrated in an example in the Appendix.
