Kansas continued holding, for its seventh year, the fourth position in the list of oil-producing states. The crude-oil production, according to purchaser's reports to the State Corporation Commission, was 40,008,940 bbl.; as assembled by the Oil and Gas Journal, 41,305,768, and by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, 41,942,000 barrels. Increase of production from 1932 was largely due to greater stability of the industry, and increased return of demand for Kansas oil, caused by the addition of Federal assistance in national production regulation which reduced illegal production, of some areas out of Kansas, that had been destructively competing with Kansas crude or its refined products, at less than cost of production. Prices continued to advance from the lowest level of 25c per barrel during part of May and June, until by the end of September 36" gravity crude had reached $1 per barrel and continued at this price the remainder of the year. Price stability, for a period greater than in previous years, has brought renewed confidence to those producing oil and has led to renewed interest and increased purchases of Kansas leases. Drilling was confined chiefly to the number of wells necessary to protect from offset and other drainage in the field and to meet the requirements of expiring lease contract deeper areas in Mid-Continent, are an added inducement to exploration. The renewal of interest in the search for new fields in Kansas is already apparent and 1934 will probably see more wildcatting than for several years. This is due both to the expiration of leases on large blocks and to actual demand of the industry for new fields. Exploration for favorable areas is being actively conducted by the various methods of surface, subsurface and core drilling and geophysical work. Much of western Kansas cannot be mapped by surface study and geophysical exploration has been of considerable assistance and has led to a large use of the seismograph. Several companies are conducting seismograph surveys and leasing on findings already secured. Development under the more favorable conditions of 1933 can be readily seen by the comparison of the following reports for the last weeks of December in the respective years.

NOTE BY THE EDITOR.-This resume of a Technologic Paper which is published in full by the U. S. Bureau of Standards, is brought before the membership of the Institute with the object of affording an opportunity for the open discussion of results of an investigation by the authors named above, of some phases of the manufacture of steel rails which are of great importance to manufacturer and consumer alike. This resume will be presented at the Pittsburg Meeting of the Institute. Discussion is invited, by either members or non-members of the Institute. The discussion may be sent in writing to the Editor, in advance of the meeting, or should preferably be presented in person at the meeting. To those who desire to discuss, copy of the full Technologic Paper (No. 38), as published by the Bureau of Stanaards, will be sent upon request addressed either to the Bureau of Standards, Washington, D. C., or to the Editor, American Institute of Mining Engineers, 29 West 39th Street, New York, N. Y. Summary of Researches and Conclusions The main objects of this investigation were to determine, from measurements taken at representative rail mills, the present American practice regarding the temperatures at which rails are rolled; to demonstrate the ease and accuracy with which such temperatures may be measured, without interfering in any way with the manufacture of the product; to find out what the "shrinkage clause" in rail specifications really means; and, finally, to determine some of the physical properties of rail steels, particularly those of interest in manufacture, some of which seem to be insufficiently known as yet. 1. Ingot Temperatures.-Measurements made in four mills show that ingots for rails are rolled at temperatures ranging from 1,075° to 1,150° C. (1,965° to 2,100° F.), and that, in a series of 20 to 40 ingots, the variation in temperature from one ingot to another is only 10° to 20° C. 2. Finishing Temperatures.-Rails are finished at temperatures ranging broadly from 880° to-1,050° C. (1,615 to 1,922° F.), but usually ranging within 50° C. of 935° C., and occasionally above 1,100° C.

SIR HUMPHREY DAVY'S epoch-making treatise delivered on Nov. 9, 1815, before the Philosophical Society of London, first announced and demon¬strated a flame safety lamp for detecting methane in mine air. Coal mining was known in England as early as 1180, more than 600 years before the advent of a safe lighting and gas-detecting appliance. Mining, no doubt, took place first in outcrop coal, and danger from gas did not become apparent until the workings became deeper and more extensive. Davy's lamp did much to increase the safety of miners, and a modified Davy lamp is still widely used for detecting the presence and approximate amount of combustible gas in mine air. No factor in coal mining has improved more rapidly during the past 15 years than safety measures. This progress came about not only as a result of the work-men's compensation laws now in force in most of the states of the Union, but because the research work of the U. S. Bureau of Mines has demonstrated some dan¬gers incident to coal mining which were not considered to be serious matters prior to that time. Electric power and explosives are necessary but 1-potential hazards in American coal mines. A general mechanization program is now under way, while the mines are growing deeper and more extensive. Conse-quently ventilation problems are more complex and a demand has been created for positive detecting devices for carbon monoxide as well as methane. Scientists and manufacturers, working hand in hand during the past 10 years, have invented and developed appliances which make systematic and effective examination of mine air possible. The object of this paper is to describe briefly the approved testing devices in use today, with the hope that they may lead to the saving of life. Dangerous coal mine gases may be placed in two groups: (1) those that are dangerous because of their explosive properties, and (2) those that are dangerous because of their toxic properties. Methane (CHI) is the important gas of the first group, and in so-called gaseous mines constantly exudes from the coal and rock; it may accumulate and form an explosive mixture.

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory research to determine the applicability of heavy liquid separation to the evaluation of certain mica ores and plant products. After careful standardization of the particular mica ores and associated gangue, accurate analysis of muscovite content could be obtained from results of heavy liquid separation. Where applicable, the method should be particularly suited to the analysis of ores and control of plant operations wherein savings in time would be of considerable advantage. Specifically, there are many instances where a quick plant control method should enable the production of a more uniform grade of mica concentrate. The laboratory use of various heavy liquids for separating minerals of different specific gravities has been recognized for many years.1-8 Sink-float procedures have proven their utility as a rapid and moderately accurate means for determining the mineral content of ores, test products, and plant products in certain nonmetallic concentrating operations. A standard method of analysis for mica in ore samples has not been published or generally accepted by the mica industry. Recently, the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated methods for analyzing mica by heavy liquid separation. This report has been prepared to make the methods available to others who may need simple, relatively rapid methods of determining the mica content of ores and plant products. The heavy liquid method of mica determination has recently been adopted by one of the major mica producers for evaluating exploration and mill control samples. DESCRIPTION OF THE ORES AND HEAVY LlQLllD The weathered mica pegmatite ores used in the investigation were obtained from commercial mica op erations in Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina. The major mineral constituents of the ores were muscovite, quartz, kaolin, and minerals of the feldspar group. The ores also contained minor quantities of biotite, limonite, and tourmaline. A comparison of the specific gravities of the major constituents of the ores (muscovite 2.76 +, quartz 2.65, kaolin 2.61, and feldspar 2.57), indicates that an effective separation of muscovite from the other minerals can be made in heavy liquids at a specific

Apart from the character of pig-iron to be manufactured, other than that it shall be well reduced and open-grained, the selection of the materials should be such as to produce it at the lowest cost. As a rule, the sources of fuels and limestones are not so extensively varied as those of the ores. Many Eastern furnaces are now using Lake Superior ores, and but recently a part of the supply came from foreign ports. It is, however, of the highest importance that the character of fuels and limestones, as well as ores, should be carefully considered in determining their value and making judicious selection among those available. The formulas here offered are based upon the assumption that the heat-requirements for a given mixture are measured by a constant required by the oxide of iron, added to that required for a unit of slag, multiplied by the weight of that slag per unit of iron. The heat-requirements for oxide of iron per unit of pig-iron made are assumed to be 2854 centigrade units. This is taken from the careful analysis of Sir Lowthian Bell, and, so far as the writer is able to determine, is very nearly correct. Dividing this by the quantity of heat that may be evolved and utilized within the furnace per unit of carbon, determines the quantity of carbon required per unit of pigiron ; and if to this be added the quantity of carbon absorbed by the pig-iron, the total requirements in carbon are determined, on the assumption that pure oxide of iron is reduced with pure carbon by the ordinary process of the blast-furnace. Calculating the quantity of slag that would be made from a given mixture of ores, smelted with a given impure fuel and fluxed with a given impure limestone, multiplying this weight of slag by the heat-requirements of its unit (taken at 1050 C. H. U.), and dividing the product by the heat-units evolved and utilized within the furnace per unit of carbon, will determine the quantity of carbon required per unit of pig-iron for the slag.

IT has been observed that a hexagonal-close-packed crystal will undergo the same macroscopic displacements as an isotropic material if the basal plane is perpendicular to the axis of twist.&apos; Other orientations may produce both bending and twisting, but this analysis will be confined to pure torsion of a right circular cylinder. The z axis, the axis of twist, and the specimen axis are coincident. The displacements are given by Uq = rz, Ur = Uz = 0 [1] where 4 is the angle of twist per unit length. This requires rotational slip, as discussed by Frank&apos; and Wilman, which may be observed readily. The relative rotation of adjoining slip planes is simply produced by a movement of a planar grid of screw dislocations."." The screw dislocations are of the same sign and they move radially inward. For hexagonal-close-packed metals, the grid is hexagonal and the screw dislocations lie in the < 2110 > directions. The displacement of a point is the resultant of two displacements produced by intersecting screws sweeping over the point. The dislocations must pass over the point (r, o) in such a manner that its resultant displacement corresponds to the observed macroscopic displacement. If 6&apos; is measured from the [1010] direction, then for 0 < ? < ~/3, only the [1210] and 121101 type screw dislocations are needed to produce the required displacement. If n1 screws of type [1210] and n2 of type [2110] pass over a point, then, in order that Ur = 0 n, sin ? - n2 sin (/3 — 6&apos;) = 0. [2] If the tangential displacement is to be independent of 0, then n1 cos ? + n2cos (/3 —?) = N [3] where N is independent of ? and thus depends only on r. Nb is the tangential displacement where b is the Burgers vector. Since U? is a linear function of r, then N must be a linear function of r. THE morning session on mining methods with R. M. Raymond as chairman was devoted mainly to papers on explosives and the discussion of these papers. A paper on the numerical index of the re-sistance which rocks offer to the penetration of a drill bit was also read. The first paper, "Relation Between the Oxygen Bal-ance and Propulsive Strength of Eight Gelatin Dynamites" by G. St. J. Perrott, N. A. Tolch and J. E. Crawshaw, was presented by Mr. Perrott, super-intendent of the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. In this paper which is the beginning of a series of publications on explosives, Mr. Perrott stated that the attempt was made to put down in quantitative form the facts which have been known to explosive engineers for a long time. Eight samples of 40 per cent gelatin dynamite, with oxygen content varying from + 15 to - 36 per cent of the theoretical amount necessary to form complete combustion with all of the combustible elements were tested. The experimental work showed that a bal-anced explosive did not give the greatest propulsive strength-but the most favorable range was from - 8 to - 25 per cent oxygen. The experimental work also brought out the fact that the wrapper of a stick of dynamite enters quite completely into the explosive reaction, and gelatin dynamites from which the wrapper had been removed developed less strength than the a same explosive with the wrapper. The second paper, "Effect of Oxygen Balance of Gelatin Dynamites on the Gaseous Products of Det-onation," by G. W. James and G. St. J. Perrott, was also presented :by Mr. Perrott. The first portion of this paper is given over to a discussion of the relative merits of different types of apparatus for testing and analyzing the combustion products of dynamites. Three types were used (1) the Bichel gage, (2) the Crawshaw-Jones apparatus and (3) the Hercules tank. All three of these types were used in testing dynamites whose oxygen balance varied from-35 to + 6 per cent.

WHILE Mr. Fahrenwald has been working on the fundamentals of ore-dressing, in Idaho, the Northwest Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the University of Washington, has been studying the corresponding fundamentals for the closely-allied subject of coal-washing. In this work many of the principles outlined in Mr. Fahrenwald&apos;s paper have been touched on, one important exception being that phase of his studies where conditions were approximated between those existing on a table and those existing in a hindered-settling classifier. During the past three years this work has been given over almost exclusively to a study of coal-tabling to devise better methods of cleaning fine sizes of coal, particularly the coals of the Northwest, which are very difficult to wash. One important result of this study thus far has been the development of a satisfactory hindered-settling coal classifier, now in use in several commercial plants. Recently table stratifica-tion has been the subject for study. This latter phase of the work with coal,. as well as the earlier portion dealing with hindered-settling classification, has in a measure paralleled Mr. Fahrenwald&apos;s work with ore. Without going into details about the results of the coal experiments, I shall merely say that, from a quali-tative standpoint, they are, in general, concordant with Mr. Fahrenwald&apos;s, but that from a quantitative stand-point the results, particularly those with, table strati-fication, are somewhat different. These differences may disappear as the work progresses-Mr. Fahrenwald is further ahead with his experiments than we are at the Northwest Station-but if not, the disparity would not be surprising, and indeed would be what one might reasonably expect when investigators work on two very dissimilar materials and use different apparatus and methods of study. However, this- mention of our coal-washing experiments is made only in passing. A principle of general application that may be estab-lished from Mr. Fahrenwald&apos;s paper is that different types of stratification should be used in successive&apos; gravity-concentration processes to. obtain best results.

The gravity discussed here is that of the clean oil produced. Gravities of fluids containing water, free or in the form of emulsion, sand, drilling mud or mineral salts of a nonbituminous nature do not represent the gravity of crude oil as considered in this paper. During recent years it has become a frequent occurrence for operators to be called upon to explain to landowners the reasons for variations in gravity on shipments of oil from wells in which they are interested as royalty owners. In regard to single well leases it has been noted that marked changes in gravity frequently have occurred for no apparent reason. Data collected on the subject and correlated with production methods reveal interesting facts. It is the purpose of this paper to present some of the highlights on the subject. These gravity changes in the natural crude oil are with a few exceptions the result of the liberation under varying conditions of the volatile hydrocarbons from the natural oil-gas solution contained within the pool. The subject of the liberation of gases from natural oil-gas solution has been investigated by Ben E. Lindsly, of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, and the observations recorded here are in the main consistent with his conclusions. Investigators have recognized two methods of liberation of gas from solution—flash and differential. In the latter method the vapors are removed from the liquid as rapidly as formed and have no opportunity to come to a condition of equilibrium with the oil. In flash liberation an equilibrium condition between the oil and the gas exists at the pressure of separation. Mr. Lindsly has found that the method of liberating the gas from the oil has a pronounced effect on the final gravity and that differential liberation results in a higher A.P.I. gravity due to the higher ratio of gasoline producing hydrocarbons left in the oil. Under actual production practices with high velocities in flow strings, it is our contention that conditions of perfect equilibrium between gas and the oil rarely exist, and that gas separation is made under varying conditions, sometimes approaching that of equilibrium and at other times departing from it.

You have just heard several papers on the classification of coal as this subject appears to the chemist; I shall approach it from the point of view of the geologist who, perforce, has to deal with coal as it occurs in the ground and with the miner of coal who knows certain phases of the physical characteristics of coal better than the scientist can possibly know them. The chemist is familiar with coal as it reaches him in the laboratory, but he seldom has an opportunity to see it in its native condition and to study its physical characteristics and its behavior under varying conditions of weather, transportation and use. He naturally regards the chemical composition of coal as the all-important feature upon which to base a system of classification and he is sometimes inclined to ignore as unscientific any scheme of classification that is based on characteristics other than chemical. The geologist, on the other hand, although he is glad to use the data furnished by the chemist, must depend largely upon the differences that he can see and feel. Classification Understandable to the Layman In the very comprehensive program of examination of the coal fields of the West which the U. S. Geological Survey undertook in 1906, it fell to my lot, as the responsible head of the work, to classify the coals in advance of much knowledge of their chemical composition and in regions where mining had not begun. In this work I was forced to devise some sort of classification that would work practically and that would be understandable to the layman in the field. Much of the classification was based on the work of those who had gone before me, but in the low rank coals of the West the field was unoccupied and I was forced to devise a scheme embracing both chemical and physical characteristics. This scheme has stood the test of actual practical application for several years but it needs revision and the sharpening of the limits between the different ranks. I feel that my experience warrants my saying that physical characteristics must be considered and I have faith to believe that some scheme embodying both can be devised.

Legal and legislative matters constituted the outstanding features of proration in Texas in 1932. From East Texas emanated most of the political, legal, technical and industrial activity. Conroe and Thompson developed into fields of major importance. Proration orders were issued by the Railroad Commission on many of the producing fields of the Gulf Coast and West Texas not covered in previous years. In Yates, Penn Pool, Winkler, Van, the Panhandle, North Texas and West Central Texas there were 110 changes of importance, except in allowables. New proration schemes were introduced in East Texas, Conroe, Thompson, Saranosa, Government Wells, Tuleta and Howard-Glasscock. Little progress was made in administration or technical development. Legal and Legislative Matters Proration first began in Texas in 1927 as a voluntary attempt to divide the market outlet of a field on an equitable basis. The statutes then in existence were considered somewhat archaic and the Railroad Commission&apos;s authority was limited. Subsequent efforts to strengthen the laws were not wholly successful. The 1929 Conservation Act made no mention of market demand but declared that the term "waste" did not mean " economic waste." With the passage of the Pipc Line Act of 1930, providing for ratable purchasing, it was the opinion of many lawyere that a legal means of proration had been found. The 1931 law had ths same provision as that of 1929 with respect to economic waste but specifically prohibited limiting of production to market demand. The law passed Nov. 12, 1932, omitted reference to economic waste and specifically provided for limitation of production to reasonable market demand. Vigorous attacks were being made in State and Federal Courts on the constitutionality of the laws and the validity of the Commission&apos;s orders. In Peoples Petroleum Producers, Inc. et al. vs. Lon A. Smith et al., which had been heard before a three-judge U. S. District Court in Houston on May 28, 1932 and again on Sept. 19, the Court&apos;s decision for plaintiffs, released Oct. 2, influenced in a large measure the calling of the Legislature and the passage of the Market Demand Law on Nov. 12.

The main problem in tunneling without the use of explosives lies in the development of tools capable of continuous mechanical destruction of rock, resulting in a fragmentation which lends itself to a smooth, uninterrupted transportation of the broken rock away from the tunnel face. While all moles of U.S. design mainly achieve this by crushing the rock by means of "disk cutters" or "roller bits," a boring system based on the principle of cutting the rock came into being in Europe, whereby the rock is worked in a manner very similar to the milling of metals. For tunneling purposes, this principle was first developed by the late Austrian engineer Wohlmeyer. Between late 1962 and the spring of 1965, the first experimental machine was tested in a German coal mine, working in coal and shale over a distance of some 3000 ft, divided over two runs separated by a period of time to allow for equipment modifications. In 1964, a collaboration was started between Wohlmeyer and the Habegger engineering firm of Thun in Switzerland. The normal Habegger range of equipment consists of aerial ropeways, ski lifts, and certain tool machines, to which in later years have been added monorail passenger-transport systems. One of these was installed as the main mode of transport at the 1967 World Fair in Montreal. After taking over the Wohlmeyer patents, Habegger further developed the original cutting principle, aiming at more robust machines in order to be able to tackle harder rock. A first machine was built and tested at a site near Thun in sandstone averaging 17,000 psi compressive strength and limestone of 25,000 psi. In May 1966 this machine was delivered to Japan for the boring of a pilot tunnel for the Honshu-Hokkaido railway connection under the sea. A second machine, incorporating many improvements based on experience gained with this first mole, was built during 1966 and tested in the same limestone as mentioned previously (25,000 psi), before being installed to bore the head race tunnel of the Julia hydroelectric power scheme near St. Moritz, Switzerland, in the early summer of 1967 (Fig. 1 ) .

HOW often has the thoughtful observer pondered the apparent contradictions experienced in the weather? One can take records of two days, one in the winter and one in the summer. The "degree days1&apos; indicate that space heating and domestic load were present in one case and not in the other. The Business Index may be about the same, indicating that the industrial activity of the area and its concomitant use of fuel were about the same. Thus the volume of the products of combustion released to the atmosphere varied only as related to the space heating demand. Yet on one day in winter the atmosphere may be clear and bracing, while on a summer&apos;s day the air is thick and murky and the visibility sharply reduced. The situation may be reversed. What are some of the factors that contribute to the creation of these conditions? These few notes have been prepared to indicate some of the influences that are exerted on the problem. The Sources of Atmospheric PolLution The industrial area of Pittsburgh, Pa., has been a dominant center for the production of iron and steel for over one hundred years. In fact, with the growth of the numerous auxiliary processes Allegheny County which contains Pittsburgh is prob- ably the most industrialized county in the world. In addition, the type of manufacture carried out in this area is predominantly dependent on thermal energy (heat). That energy is supplied from coke and coal produced in the vicinity of Pittsburgh Indicative of the stupendous quantities of fuel that are employed in this industrial area&apos;s economy, the following (Table I) taken from the U. S. Census (1940) may be of interest. It is shown that the apparent activation energy for creep of pure poly crystalline metals increases with increasing temperature in the temperature range 0.5 to 1.0 of the absolute melting temperature. This increase is probably associated with the influence 0-f the elastic modulus on the creep rate. By accounting for the variation of Young&apos;s nodulus with temperature, the true activation energies for creep of pure cadmium and aluminuvl are shown to be equal to the activation energies for self-diffusion in these metals, within experimental error, at all temperatures above 0.5T,. New creep parameters are proposed for cmrelation of steady-state creep rate and time-to-rupture data. These are respectively, where u is the creep stress, E is Young&apos;s rrodulus, i,is the steady-state creep mte, t, is the time -to-rupture, and D is the self-diffusion coefficient [equal to Do exp (-QSd/RT)] . It has been established experimentally1 and theoreticallyZm4 that high-temperature creep of poly-crystalline pure metals is a thermally activated process and may be represented by the general expression where <, is the steady-state creep rate, A is a constant dependent on the internal structure of the material, f is some function of the applied stress (0) and test temperature (T), and D is the self-diffusion coefficient. If D is separated into its temperature-dependent and independent portions, then it is possible to rewrite Eq. [I] as where Qsd is the activation energy for self-diffusion. Assuming a simple Arrhenius-type relationship between creep rate and temperature at a given constant stress, the apparent activation energy for creep, Q,, is given by the expression It is obvious that if is not a function of temperature It has been shown that the steady-state creep rate for pure polycrystalline metals1 can be represented by where S is a constant, L is the grain diameter, E is the isotropic polycrystalline (unrelaxed) elastic modulus, and n is a constant equal to approximately 5 over a wide range of stress. Much has been said and written recently about the manpower problem in the mining industry. The coal segment of the industry has been scrambling to staff and man its companies and operations in order to accommodate the current boom, and there are some interesting side- lights and developments which deserve further attention from coal mining people. This column will deal with the manpower problem in general and the plight of the professional-the mining engineer-in particular. At this point in the game, it is desirable and perhaps necessary to ask ourselves if there really is a manpower problem and, if so, how serious it is. Suprisingly, there are varying and conflicting answers to this question. If we are talking about warm bodies, then in most mining areas there is no problem. If, however, we are talking about skilled or trained people-at all levels-there are apparently serious shortages, especially in the coal industry and in the U. S. Bureau of Mines. To define quantitatively the present and future need for mining professionals is a formidable task, to say the least. Without pretending that these figures are anything but an educated guess, we feel there is an immediate need for about 1000 mining engineers right now and a continuing need for about 300 mining school graduates per year (double last year&apos;s number) for the next ten years in order to take up the slack, provide for attrition and maintain a normal growth rate. Mining companies, large and small, are just now beginning to realize that the industry is undergoing a revolution, It is no longer possible to design, build and operate coal mines by the "seat of the pants." Production demands, the new health and safety law and the inevitable new legislation on surface mining will require more engineering, more planning and new technology. There are mine operators who need mining engineers and don&apos;t even know that they need them. This could mean rough going for the small operator. It surely means that there will be a trend toward increasing the ratio of technical to nontechnical employees and the ratio of technical employees to dollars of capital towards levels comparable with other highly mechanized industries.

EXTENSIVE Sampling of coal in Illinois during the past 10 or 12 years by the State Geological Survey, in cooperation with various organizations, such as the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the University of Illinois, and the Illinois Cooperative Mining Investigations, has made possible the delineation of two areas of low-sulfur coal in the southern part of Illinois. The sulfur content is less than 1.25 per cent., so that, if otherwise suitable, these coals can be employed for metallurgical uses and for the manufacture of water-gas and retort gas. One of these areas is small and lies in Jack-son County, near Murphysboro, the other is much larger and includes a large part of the famous Franklin County field. A small area of No. 2, or Murphysboro, coal has been worked for many years near the town of Murphysboro, Jackson County, Ill. In two mines, at least, the coal has a sulfur content of less than 1.25 per cent. It is doubtful, however, whether this field will ever be a source of large tonnage as the total area underlain by low-sulfur coal in workable thickness is probably less than 15 sq. mi. (24.14 sq. km.), and a large part of it has already been worked out. The location of the area of low-sulfur coal in the Franklin County field is shown in the accompanying map. The small area underlain by the Murphysboro low-sulfur coal is shown near the town of that name in the central part of Jackson County. The larger area lies in the west side of Franklin County, extending also about 6 mi. (9.65 km.) south into Williamson County, about 4 mi. (6.43 km.) west into northern Jackson and western Perry County, and northward an undetermined distance into Jefferson County. All but the northern limit of the area is fairly well defined by sampling in numerous mines. The inner cross-lined area is underlain by coal having less than 1 per cent. sulfur, the outer boundary surrounding the area Underlain by coal having less than 1.25 per cent, sulfur.

The iron formation of the Gogebic Range in northeastern Wisconsin and the northwestern part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, resembles that of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota very closely in lithologic character and the subdivisions and horizons that can be recognized. It contains numerous interbedded slaty layers and considerable intraformational conglomerate in certain horizons. In contrast to the flat dip of the Mesabi formation, the Gogebic dips steeply to the northwest at an average angle of about 70". It has a quartzite and siliceous slate foot wall and a hanging wall of conglomerate, graywacke and slate. The black and gray Tyler slate has been designated the hanging wall of the Gogebic iron formation in U. S. Geologicial Survey monographs, but between the true Tyler slate and the commercially important Gogebic iron formation, and apparently unconformably upon the latter, is a series 600 ft. or more thick of conglomerate, slate, graywacke, and cherty iron formation, the latter being of no commercial importance on the Gogebic Range as far as now known. This series is probably that described as the "Capps" on the eastern Gogebic by the Michigan Geological Survey. The Gogebic iron formation proper can be subdivided into three main horizons, a lower cherty and an upper cherty with a banded or slaty horizon between them, corresponding to the three lower horizons of the Mesabi. Several minor subdivisions can be made of these major ones. Orebodies occur in all three horizons of the Gogebic series and in some places ore is developed across practically the entire series. Dikes and Sills The Gogebic iron formation has been intruded most intricately by basic dikes and sills, most of the former pitching east but some pitching west. One very extensive sill is intruded near the base of the lower slaty or banded horizon, in the formation known locally as the Yale slates. One extensive bedding or strike fault is associated with this sill and a great many transverse faults occur at different places along the Range. The combination, or association, of steep dip, faults, dikes and sills has produced conditions very favorable for the development of orebodies through the leaching, oxidation, and consequent concentration effected

Undoubtedly other members have given their lives in the Service of the United States and the Allies during the past four years, but the following biographical notices are all that have reached us as yet. Lewis Newton Bailey Lewis Newton Bailey died of pneumonia at Camp Merritt, N. J., Apr. 30, 1918, at the age of 34 years. He was Master Engineer, Senior Grade, in the Fourth Regiment, U. S. Engineers, and although he was offered a commission as First Lieutenant shortly after enlisting, he preferred not to accept it until he had reached France. By those who knew him well, this lack of eagerness for promotion will be recognized as consistent with his whole character. Mr. Bailey was born at San Diego, Cal., May 28,1884, and graduated from the University of California, College of Mines, in 1906. He joined the American Institute of Mining Engineers in 1916. During 1904 he was employed at the cyanide plant of the Buckeye mines, Forest Hills, Cal. In the autumn of 1909 he went to the Coeur d&apos;Alene District, Idaho, and was first employed on construction work of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co&apos;., with a short intermission at the Hercules mill, after which. he was sampler and assayer for the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co. until May, 1910, when he was obliged to return to California to attend to family interests. Returning to the Coeur d&apos;Alene district in November, 1911, he was given charge of remodelling and operating the mill of the Coeur d&apos;Alene Development Co., treating the output of the Ontario mine; this work he performed with credit and complete success. In December, 1914, he returned to the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Co., as assistant metallurgist and mill superintendent, his work consisting mainly in the testing and improvement of concentrator practice, which he continued with great credit until August, 1915, when family considerations required that he again return to the home of his parents at San Diego. Mr. Bailey was characterized by energy, both physical and mental, by devotion to his friends, associates and employer. He was particularly successful in his relations with the men under him and, in fact, was thoroughly well likcd by everybody with whom he came in contact.

THE manufacture of optical glass is a new industry in this country. In 1914, after the war started, the supply of optical glass from Europe was cut off, but as there was a fairly large stock of glass on hand, it was not until the end of 1915 that the optical instrument makers made serious efforts to produce their own glass. These early attempts were generally made by practical glass men and, due primarily to the fact that very little scientific help was used, the first attempts were unsuccessful. It was not until the whole problem was attacked by technically trained men who used advanced methods of research that good results were obtained. These researches proved that the accurate control of the temperature was a most important factor in the manufacture of optical glass. The early glass maker judged temperatures with his eyes; later, Seger cones were introduced into the furnace at various stages of the melt. Then radiation, indicating and recording pyrometers with rare-metal thermocouples were introduced. Now, in addition to these, an optical pyrometer every hour or so is sighted right into the pot and on the molten glass. Figs. 1 and 2 show how pyrometers are used to control the melt. InFig. 2, Y is the clay pot in which the batch is melted to glass within the furnace X. The rare-metal thermocouple S, protected by a clay tube, extends through the wall and about 4 in. into the furnace. This couple is connected to an indicator T and a recorder U so that a complete record of the furnace temperatures is obtained. The section of the curve ABCD, Fig. 1, shows how gradually and carefully the clay pot must be heated to get rid of moisture AB and during the calcining at CD. The stem of an expansion pyrometer R is extended through a hole in the door Z of the furnace and into the pot in order to more closely follow the temperatures of the clay pot itself during the burning process, that is from A to D. After the pot is calcined, the temperature can be rapidly raised to E (about 1430° C.); from E to F this temperature is much higher
