A computer program has been developed to simulate a gas transmission 1ine operating under transient conditions. The program was developed by application of the basic mass and momentum balance equations. The nonlinear equations thus obtained were transformed by the method of characteristics and finite-difference techniques to make them suitable for machine computation. Three tests of the computer program were made. In each of these, the initial condition was assumed to be steady-state flow, the inlet density was held constant at the initial condition, and the outlet mass flow rate was varied with time. One test was theoretical in nature, but the others were made for direct comparison with actual field data. Results of the tests are presented in graphical form. INTRODUCTION Theoretical investigations of the transient flow of gas in long pipelines have been limited in number. In 1951, Olds and Sage4 developed a gaphical method of solving the nonlinear flow equations describing transient gas flow in a long pipeline. Research in this field at the U. of Oklahoma was initiated by Nelson1 in 1956. Nelson utilized a computer to solve numerical equations involving a lengthy trial-and-error procedure, and his results have been reported in the literature? It does not seem likely that Nelson's method can be extended to the analysis of transient behavior of pipeline networks; therefore, the investigation to be discussed in this paper was undertaken to improve and extend the previous work. The following discussion presents, briefly: (1) the basic differential equations governing transient flow, (2) transformation of these equations into a form suitable for machine computation. (3) role of boundary conditions in the calculations, (4) a very brief description of the computer program which was developed to simulate the pipeline and (5) results of tests of the computer program.

THE peak of production from the Appalachian natural gas field was apparently reached about 10 years ago, and the annual production from Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio has now dropped to about two-thirds of the amounts obtained in 1916 and 1917. This .falling off in production has occurred in spite of vigorous efforts and large expenditures by producing companies to maintain or increase their output. The greatly increased costs of development and handling are reflected in the present average value of natural gas at the point of consumption, which value in the three states referred to, has more than doubled in the past 10 years. While it is true that the natural gas production of the United States has increased during recent years, this increase has come from southwestern states, particularly from Oklahoma, California, Louisiana and Texas, which states are now leaders in the production of this valuable but fleeting resource. Pennsylvania, originally the leading state in natural gas production, occupies sixth place in the latest (1924) U. S. Bureau of Mines statistics. West Virginia, which held first place for 15 years, has dropped to third rank, and Ohio is the seventh state in the order of natural gas production. Domestic and industrial demands for gas are constantly increasing everywhere in the United States. These growing demands have accentuated the difficulties in the localities with depleted natural gas supplies, and serious shortages have already occurred during winter months in the Pittsburgh district. Some relief has been obtained by placing restrictions on the industrial use of natural gas, and by increasing the price (which tends to reduce consumption). Yet these are but temporary expedients for checking gas consumption, which fail to solve the problem of adequate future supplies of gas.

INTRODUCTION Published laboratory procedures used by the major crusher manufacturers for estimating crusher size are based upon techniques developed in the mid 1940's. Specifically, the two largest U.S. crusher manufacturers are using the Bond impact procedure. Although the procedure is still in use, there is little confidence in the results. Unless the laboratory results fall within a preconceived range, personal experience is used for selecting the number of crushers and connected horsepower (Coleman, 1978). There have been numerous theoretical studies of the communition of particles. However, no procedure has been widely acclaimed for predicting crusher power requirements. Experimental studies have included breakage by slow compression, slow speed impact and high speed impact. Theoretical results have increased our knowledge of the comminution process, but the procedures have not been capable of analyzing the complex mechanism of industrial crushing machines. The purpose of this chapter is to review the empirical crushing procedures that have been used, including advantages and disadvantages. A new procedure which has been in development at Allis-Chalmers Corp. from 1977 to 1982 is detailed. Actual results of the new procedure on a concentrator feasibility study are included. EXPERIMENTAL GOALS The goals of a laboratory crushability procedure are accurate predictions of: (1) Rock crushability, measured as energy per unit mass. (2) Crusher product size analysis. A procedure capable of predicting these parameters should be inexpensive and require a minimum amount of sample. CRUSHABILITY TESTS Bond Impact Procedure F. C. Bond (1946) detailed the development of the pendulum impact device that is still used by the leading crusher manufacturers (Bond; Rexnord, 1976). Various methods of valuation for mining properties have been suggested, but all authorities seem to agree in accepting, as the fairest and most practicable and logical, a capitalization of the estimated future earnings, when such estimate can reasonably be made. Hoover and Finlay both emphasize this. The United States Supreme Court says in Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway Co., v. Backus, 154 U. S. 439: But the value of the property results from the use to which it is put and varies with the profitableness of that use, present and prospective, actual and anticipated. There is no pecuniary value outside of that which results from such use. The amount and profitable character of such use determines the value. The Committee on Federal Taxation of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, appointed in 1919, in its report states: A proper value of a mining property is the present value of the prospective net earnings, taking into account probable variations in output and value. Ingalls ("Wealth and Income of the American People," p. 97) says: The fundamental principle of mine valuation is the present worth of an annual dividend accruing during the period of years corresponding with the lie of the mine. It is a convention that the estimated period shall not be more than 30 years.

The microseismic method of detecting instability and high-stress zones in underground mines was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in the early 1940's.l,2 For about 25 years this method has been used throughout the world by mining and construction companies in assessing the stability of underground and surface excavations. Rock noises are the release of small amounts of stored strain energy propagating outward from their source as a seismic wave that can be detected with special geophysical equipment. This release of strain energy is caused by a rock mass undergoing load changes resulting in small-scale displacement adjustments such as microcracking, shearing, sliding, and crushing of crystal grains, some even as small as the elastic displacements themselves. No detailed field studies of any of these mechanisms have been made, and knowledge about the origin of rock noises is relatively incomplete. Laboratory tests have shown that when rocks are stressed in a testing machine, the rock noise rate-the number of rock noises generated per unit of time increases with increasing applied stress.3 This increase is most pronounced as the ultimate strength of the rock is approached. The standard field procedure has been to monitor a rock structure at intervals and plot rock noise rates vs. time, thus gaining a semiquantitative estimate of the behavior and stability of the structure. The success of such monitoring, however, has depended almost entirely on the experience and knowledge of the operator, his interpretation of the data, and his equipment. Very little study has been devoted to the basic properties of the vibration record of a rock noise. USBM decided that the microseismic method was being used sufficiently by various mining and construction companies

DEURBROUK INTRODUCTION During 1974, 43.9% of the 603,406,000 tons (549,099,000 mt) of bituminous coal and lignite produced was cleaned mechanically, of which 82,280,000 tons (74,875,000 mt) was cleaned by dense medium processes.l The percentage of bituminous coal and lignite cleaned mechanically by dense medium processes increased from 7 to 31 % between 1938 and 1974. Dense medium separations include those coal preparation processes which clean raw coal by immersing it in a fluid having a density inter- mediate between clean coal and reject. As there is a general correlation between ash content and specific gravity, it is possible to achieve the required degree of removal of ash-forming impurities from a raw coal by regulating the specific gravity of the separating fluid. Dense medium processes offer the following advantages over other coal cleaning processes: 1) Ability to make sharp separations at any specific gravity within the range normally required even in the presence of high percentages of the feed in the range of 2 0.1 sp gr units. 2) Ability to maintain a separating gravity that can be controlled with ± 0.005 sp gr units.

The urgent need for new base metal ore discoveries was discussed by various authoritative exploration personnel at a CIM symposium on the future of the Canadian mineral industry held at Ottawa in 1967. Data presented at this meeting showed that approximately 150 new mines have started or restarted production in Canada since 1955. Over half of these mines were discovered prior to 1950. The distribution of Canadian ore discoveries during the last 15 years (shown in Fig. 1) illustrates a striking reduction in the discovery rate in recent years in spite of increasing exploration expenditures. These data indicate that $20 million is now spent in exploration for every significant metal deposit found, and evidently the cost of discovery is still rising. Even fewer discoveries are being made in some other important continental areas of the world such as Africa, Australia and South America. The discovery record in the U.S. is thought to be more rewarding than in Canada because the new deposits appear to be substantially larger. Fortunately, most good base metal ore deposits have attractive investment re- turns to justify large exploration expenditures. The magnitude of the exploration expenditures and the increasing need to develop additional metal resources justifies a critical review of the procedures used in the search for ore deposits. Of particular concern is the need to improve the use of exploration techniques in the attempt to obtain better discrimination and efficiency. There is a tendency by inexperienced exploration groups to think of any geological, geochemical or geophysical anomaly as an exploration target and ignore the fact that anomalies can result from many factors other than economic concentration of metals. The desire for a unique and favorable explanation of exploration data often results in too rapid a movement from the reconnaissance to the drilling stage without the use of all the relevant information.

INTRODUCTION The notion of permanent disposal of high-level radioactive waste in natural salt formations was formally proposed in 1957 by the Committee on Waste Disposal of the National Academy of Sciences- National Research Council. This proposal was the result of the Committee's deliberations in response to a request from the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) in 1955 to assess the viability of geologic formations for such disposal. The research investigations for waste disposal in salt were initiated at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the late 1950's and continued through the 1960's and early 1970's at a relatively modest level of funding. During the period of transfer of Federal Administrative authority from the AEC to the Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) to the Department of Energy (DOE) during the latter part of the 197O’s, financial support for the research program was enhanced substantially. The program at OWL was regrouped under the Office of Waste Isolation (OWI) and later transferred to the Office of Nuclear Waste Isolation (ONWI) at Battelle Memorial Institute. With this enhancement in the research program, consideration of basalt, granite, shale, and tuff as repository host media was initiated. In February, 1980 the President of the United States established officially a comprehensive waste management program which called for the selection of the first repository site in 1985 from a suite of four or five potentially suitable sites, and initiation of a repository operation at that site in the mid-1990's. The method of demonstrating the structure existing in a metal or alloy at high temperatures, by etching a polished sample after it has been heated to the desired temperature, is quite familiar to metallog-raphists. The usual procedure1 2 is to heat the specimen, previously polished for microscopic examination, to the desired temperature, in a neutral atmosphere (hydrogen or nitrogen), then admit the etching gas (chlorine, hydrochloric acid or similar gas) for a few seconds, and finally, after flushing out the etching gas with the neutral one, cool the specimen in the neutral atmosphere. The pattern produced by etching at a definite temperature is usually taken as a record of the microstructure prevailing at that temperature. It has frequently been pointed out that changes in composition of the surface metal occur during the preliminary heating in the neutral atmosphere, so that the appearance produced by the etching at high temperature may not exactly represent the condition of the interior of the specimen. To overcome this uncertainty, the heating has sometimes been done in vacuo,3 the etching gas being admitted when the desired temperature was reached, then pumped out and the specimen cooled in vacuo. This chapter will outline the operating procedures at Freeport Kaolin Co.5 kaolin mining operations in Georgia, with emphasis on explaining new techniques recently introduced to reclaim mined-out areas for reforestation. Kaolin is found in the central Georgia area (See Fig. 1) in lenticular, sedimentary deposits of high purity. The beds are Cretaceous in age and vary from 4 to 60 ft in thickness, under a cover of sedimentary overburden ranging from 5 to 150 ft. The kaolin beds contain the mineral kaolinite (a hydrous aluminum silicate) and have a particle-size distribution ranging from about 20µ to the submicron level and averaging about 60% below 2µ. The only contaminants in the deposits are coarse mica, quartz particles, and minor amounts of iron and titanium oxides. These kaolin deposits vary widely in quality from deposit to deposit and also vary within individual deposits. Some of the controlling quality specifications which are determined during exploration are viscosity in water suspension, optical brightness index as measured by reflectance, amenability to bleaching, and particle-size distribution. For this reason, only a small portion of the total kaolin reserves in the Georgia belt are suitable for wet processing for the present markets being served. Kaolin clays are selectively mined by different mechanical methods and are beneficiated by both wet and dry processing to produce a number of products used as fillers and coatings in the paper industry; fillers or additives in the paint, plastic, and rubber industries; and as basic raw materials for the ceramic industry. The State of Georgia is the largest kaolin producer in the United States, with 3,206,454 tons produced in 1966, according to U.S. Bureau of Mines statistics. Freeport Kaolin Co’s processing plant is located in Gordon, Ga., about 20 miles east of Macon, Ga.

Professor ArnolD, of the Sheffield Technical School, who has done so much excellent work in metallurgical research, recently produced, with the aid of aluminum, a sound ingot and bar from the purest known Swedish brand containing 99.8 per cent. of pure iron. SIXTEEN steels containing different combinations of chromium and molybdenum, in amounts up to 5 per cent of each element, were examined for microstructure and hardness after air cooling and after furnace cooling from suitable austenitizing temper- [ ] atures. Diagrams summarizing the structures and hardness resulting from these two cooling rates are presented (Figs. 3, 4, 7).† Data were also obtained on the influence of these two elements, individually and in combination, on the depth 0f decarburization observed after furnace cooling (Fig. 8). COMPOSITION OF MATERIAL The chemical composition of the steels investigated is given in Table I. The plain carbon steel was made in a 25-ton Heroult electric-arc furnace, while the alloy steels were made in a 4.5-ton Ajax-Northrup elec- [ ] tric induction furnace. The cast ingots were hot-rolled to I.75-in. bars. AIR-COOLED SERIES The I.75-in. bars were forged to flat plates, 0.25 in. thick, from which specimens 0.5 in. wide by 2 in. long were cut. The specimens were pretreated to improve their homogeneity by heating to I830°F. (1000°C.) for 20 min. and oil quenching. They were then reheated to I740°F. THE copper-silver system presents several points of special interest in the study of segregate structures. The system is simple eutectic, with limited solid solutions terminal with the pure component metals. The extent of solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature for both the copper-rich and the silver-rich alloys, thus offering a possibility for the formation of Widmanstätten figures and also a possibility for aging after quenching. In contrast to the structures studied previously the structures in this system are unique in their origin, for one terminal solid solution will precipitate the other, and vice versa. In most of the other systems for which crystallographic data on the precipitation (or transformation) process are available, either intermetallic compounds or intermediate phases partake in the decomposition process; the absence of such phases thus distinguishes this system. The lattice structures of the two solid solutions are identical in type, differing in lattice spacing by approximately 10 per cent; because of this it seems difficult if not impossible to predict on the basis of present theory either the outward form of the precipitate or the lattice orientation relationships between matrix and precipitate.
