GENTLEMEN : Herewith are submitted reports for the calendar year 1933 of your Treasurer and the Chairmen of the following standing committees: Finance, Admissions, Membership, Papers and Publications, Library, and MINING AND METALLURGY. TO these reports you are referred for additional details of the year's activity. Finances.-Income for 1933 from all sources totaled $121,690 com- pared with $138,331 in 1932. Incidentally, this exceeded the income as estimated in the budget by $7,190; the largest item being a "surplus" of $3,316 over the budget expectancy as to member dues. As compared with 1932 the most important items of shrinkage in income were $9,000 from dues and initiation fees; $5,500 from the magazine, MINING AND METALLURGY; and $2,500 from sales of publications other than the magazine.

THE changes induced in metals by subjecting them to heavy particle bombardment have received widespread attention in recent years and results of such investigations have been reviewed by Slater, Dienes, Seitz, Siegel, and Seitz and Koehler.1-5 Of particular significance are the property changes that occur in uranium-base alloys due to neutron bombardment. These changes are generally very severe since fission occurs within the sample, resulting in the formation of heavy, highly energetic fission fragments, as well as additional neutrons born in fission, which serve to intensify the damage generally associated with fast neutron bombardment of nonfissionable metals. THE use of galvanic cells for the determination of oxygen activities has spread rapidly since the suitability of calcia-stabilized zirconia as a solid electrolyte material was first demonstrated by Kiukkola and Wagner.' In many of these investigations:-7 including several at ARL, the free-energy changes for various oxidation-reduction reactions involving the oxides FexO, NiO, and Cu2O have been measured as a means of assuring that a cell apparatus is functioning properly. As a result, a large quantity of data pertinent to the calculation of the high-temperature standard free energy of formation (?GO) of these oxides has been accumulated. Three, major suites of igneous rocks were erupted in the Great Basin in middle and late Cenozoic time. The first resulted in eruption of andesitic rocks in the northern Great Basin between 42 and 34 m.y. ago. Between 34 and 17 m.y. ago this igneous activity migrated to the southwest, ending about 17 m.y. ago with the onset of crustal extension and north-south- trending Basin and Range (rift) faulting. The second volcanic suite erupted between 17 and 8 m.y. ago in the northern Great Basin. The third volcanic suite consists of andesitic and rhyolitic lavas and some basalt erupted between 22 to 7 m.y. ago in the western Great Basin along the northwest transcurrent Walker Lane fault zone. Hydrothermal ore deposits are associated with all suites of igneous rocks.

During the past few years the combination of continuous billet casting with in-line reduction has been studied and several machines have been built with this capability included in the design parameters. (1,2,3,4,5) In-line reduction and continuous casting in combination are obvious and attractive. As pinch rolls are already in place for the continuous casting operation, it can be readily seen that a redesign of the mechanical and electrical equipment of the pinch rolls is all that is necessary to have in-line rolling. There have been numerous in-line reduction experiments conducted by simply increasing the pinch roll pressure on existing machines. (6,7,8,9) These generally failed to produce quality billets and often resulted in internal metallurgical defects (Figure 1).

THE Birmingham red iron ore district in Jefferson County, north central Alabama, Fig. 1, is bounded on the northwest by the Warrior and Plateau coal fields and on the southeast by the Cahaba and Coosa coal fields. The area of study includes the ridge and valley between Red Mountain and Shades Mountain, Fig. 2, approximately 70 square miles extending from Homewood in the northeast to Greenwood in the southwest. The district is one of the most important producers of hematite in the United States, with an annual production of about 7 million tons. The amount of hematite mined between 1870 and 1950 ranged from 6 to 16 pct of the nation's total annual production, and the iron and steel products from blast furnaces in the Birmingham district supply the entire southeastern section of the country.

It is approximately 13 miles north of Miller Lake (deposit No. 3). sodium sulfate deposits in western Canada, which have been known for several years. In the northwestern part of North Dakota is a chain of shallow lakes, which continues northward into Saskatchewan. Over twenty million tons of Glauber salt has been proved present in these North Dakota deposits. (See Fig. 1.)

MARMORA mine is located a mile southeast of Marmora village in Hastings County, Ontario, 130 miles from Toronto and 150 miles from Ottawa. Highway No. 7 passes half a mile north of the mine and Highway No. 14 half a mile west. The Canadian National Ry. branch line between Trenton and Bancroft passes through the property just east of the open pit. The iron orebody at Marmora is the result of a replacement of Pre-Cambrian limestone with zones or bands of magnetite interlaid with metamorphic rocks and cut by later intrusives. The ore and associated Pre-Cambrian rocks are overlain by 100 to 150 ft of flat-lying paleozoic limestone. It is a low grade magnetite deposit that requires concentration before it can be used economically for production of iron and steel.

EFFECT OF ELEMENTS ON MAGNETIC PROPERTIES OF IRON THE elements aluminum,1 arsenic,2 silicon,3 tin2 and vanadium,4,8 when used in relatively small amounts as alloying elements, seem to have a beneficial effect on the magnetic properties of iron-i. e., they increase the maximum permeability and decrease the coercive force-whereas there are definite indications that boron,5 carbon,6 nitrogen,7 oxygen,8' phosphorus,6 sulfur6 and titanium,4 as well as the metals of and adjacent to the ferro-magnetic group, nickel,9 cobalt,10 copper,11 and manganese,6 have a detrimental effect on these properties. The effects of calcium4 and magnesium4 are small, if any, while the effect of chromium 12 in small amounts is unknown and in large amounts is generally detrimental.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) GENERAL. THE Tooele plant. off the International Smelting & Refining Co. is situated at the mouth of Pine canyon, Tooele county, Utah. It is connected with the main line of the San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lake railroad by the Tooele Valley. railway, and is about 7 miles from Tooele Junction. Fig,. 1 is a general view of the plant. The copper plant has been in operation since July, 1910, and the first blast furnace it the lead plant was blown in on Feb. 29, 1912. The location of the plant was selected on sloping ground with the idea of using gravity to the fullest extent and thus keeping labor at a minimum. Practically the entire plant is constructed of steel, reinforced concrete, and. brick.

Getting optimal performance from flotation cells can, in many cases, be critical to a project's economic viability. Simple testing procedures can sound early warning signals as well as maintain optimum recoveries from the flotation cycle. The materials required for a simple testing laboratory include: (1) pH meter or pH paper, (2) bottles of reagents used in plant flotation, (3) stop watch, (4) calibrated eye droppers. (5) laboratory flotation machine (1000-g tank, open impeller), (6) froth collection pans, (7) magnifying glass, (8) sizing screen sufficient to retain 10% of the flotation feed coarse fraction, (9) sizing screen for the size particles at which desliming of the plant flotation feed is to take place, and (10) a set of screens covering the complete range of feed particle size.

Early this year at the University of Arizona in Tucson, a survey was made of student opinion about the minerals industry. Over 100 of the three page questionnaires were completed and these were analyzed by the following categories: 40 Mining Engineering students, 20 Geological Engineering with 2 Geophysical Engineering students, 15 Geology students, 7 Metallurgical Engineering, 26 Underclassmen, 29 Graduate students and a composite of 84 total students. Not all of the results of the survey were predictable. After graduation there is a strong preference toward going to work in the mineral industries. The next most popular options, but trailing the first choice greatly, was graduate work or employment in another industry. A smattering of other choices were for teaching, government or research. None checked the box for drop out.

Seven mines with important production records in the Coeur d'Alene lie adjacent to the Gem stocks -the Frisco (Gem), Hercules, Interstate, Rex (Sixteen to One), Success (Granite), Sunset, and Tamarack. Old records are incomplete, but avail- able data given in Table I show these mines have produced 10,550,721 tons of ore containing more than 50 million oz of silver, more than 1.5 billion lb of lead, and about 1 billion lb of zinc (approximately 1.25 million tons of lead and zinc combined). Average ore grade is 4.8 oz of silver per ton, 7.2 pct Pb, and 4.6 pct Zn. This impressive production represents about 12 pct of the District's yield. At present metal prices, with modern beneficiation, the gross value would be more than $400 million.

Two samples of drilling mud from the Hastings oil field, Texas, were tested, and the solids in each were separated into small fractions of a limited range in particle size. The mineral composition of each fraction by X-ray analysis is reported, and the results are interpreted in relation to other measured quantities, such as the physical properties of the original samples and the density of the various fractions. It was found that only 7 to 8 per cent by weight of the solids was of colloidal dimensions and that neither of the samples contained montmorillonite but did contain illite. Considerable calcite was also found. These data should be useful to the geologist interested in the origin and history of sedimentary strata as well as to the petroleum engineer.

ON April 7 the twentieth national Open-hearth Conference of the A.I.M.E. will be held in Birming¬ham, Ala., in conjunction with a meeting of the Committee on Blast Furnaces and Raw Materials. At least 300 engineers and operators are expected to attend. Birmingham, the industrial city and iron, and steel center of the South, has been called the "Magic City." Men actively engaged in business in Birmingham today have seen practically every building in the business district erected, have witnessed the establishment of every existing industry, and have hunted birds cm the site now one of the busiest corners of the business district. Production of crude oil in Bahrein Island during 1938 reached the new high of 8,297,998 bbl., an increase of 535,734 bbl, over the 1937 production of 7,762,264 bbl. The monthly average during 1938 was 691,500 bbl. and the daily average 22,734 barrels. To the close of December 1938, a total of 52 producing wells have been drilled. During the year 13 producing wells were completed and 11 wells were drilling or partly completed as of Dec. 31, 1938. The total footage drilled as of Dec. 31, 1938, amounted to 165,339 ft., of which 60,739 ft. was drilled during 1938. The production from the main pay comes from a depth of approximately 2200 ft. and the gravity of the oil is 33" A.P.I.
