GeRmany's crude-oil production during 1936 totaled 3,112,494 bbl., an increase of 5.2 per cent over the 3,007,711 bbl. produced in 1935. The official monthly production figures published in 1936 report only the individual production figures of the three old established fields, whereas since 1936 official reports combine the production of all other fields into one figure. According to these published data, and using a conversion factor of 1 metric ton equaling 7 bbl., the oil production of Germany in 1936 was as follows:

CHURN drilling equipment at Bagdad consists of two Bucyrus Erie 27-T model drills and one 22-T drill with gasoline engines. The drilling tools weigh approximately 1600 lb. The holes are drilled with 7-in. bits which are heated in an oil burning furnace and sharpened in an electrically powered bit sharpener. A service truck brings the bits to the drills and takes the dull bits back to the shop. The bits weigh around 250 lb. when new and are handled by drill crews without any mechanical handling device.

As the outcrop mines in the West developed into underground operations, systems of ground support were gradually evolved. In the early coal mines there was little need for support except near the dirt line in portals, where stone masonry was common. Where the top was shaley or broken, native pine props with light cross bars and legs furnished enough support even in Utah's 25-ft coal seams. As depth of workings increased. roofs and backs of the same general nature as those near the surface became more and more unstable and required more and more support. Some coal airways show this tendency very clearly. From the surface down the same type of roof shows deterioration which an experienced eye can translate into a measure of depth under surface rather than change in rock characteristics. Rock bolts, developed by various companies and by the U. S. Bureau of Mines, have become an effective substitute for timber in sections of some metal and nonmetal mines formerly requiring escessive timber support, and further use of war surplus landing mats, chain link fencing, and a new punched channel developed by one of the steel companies has enabled other mines to operate deposits where costs of timber and lack of clearance for timber support would have prohibited mining. The block caving mines have made extensive use of reinforced concrete underground to achieve similar ends under difficult conditions. Steel sets are standard in many Bureau of Reclamation projects, although these are usually covered in with concrete to make the permanent structures the Bureau's reclamation projects require. But the use of steel in mining operations is limited and has been confined principally to the iron ore mines of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Some mines have installed used rail as posts, caps, and crossbars, but a rail section is not suited for load carrying, and used rails are generally brittle. having a tendency to fail without warning when overloaded. European mines were the first to reach the size of worked out areas and depths of cover resulting in major roof problems. The Europeans resorted to pack walls and masonry walls, in conjunction with timber arched sets. rail arches, and combination timber and rail and steel arches. The give in these pack walls and wooden blocking was supplemented by a hinge in the center of the arch. This design is called an articulated arch Through various refinements of this principle of the support giving graduallv with the load. Toussaint-Heintzmann developed the yielding or sliding arches, in which yield is accomplished by friction in the overlapping joints of the arch. This type has gained widespread acceptance in the Ruhr and Lorraine Basin and is being manufactured by Bethlehem Steel for sale in this country. In North America the anthracite mines in Pennsylvania, followed by certain iron ore mines in upper Michigan and Canada, were the first to employ these arches to any extent. The practice was later adopted by Kennecott at Ruth, Nev., and by others. Despite high initial cost, the use of these arches is growing in many parts of the country because of their suitability in heavy ground. In its present form of manufacture the yield-able arch consists of open U-shaped rolled section with heavy beads on the edge. The open edge of the U is placed toward the wall. The section nests in another section of the same dimensions, and an arch can be built up from rolled radii and tangents of various weights and lengths. Sections are fastened together by U bolts and saddles. The lap on the joint varies from 12 to 24 in., and ordinarily the bolts are tightened with a 1-in. drive air wrench. The arches are spaced with channel struts held by J bolts and saddles. Sections can also be obtained that are composed of various combinations of radii and tangents and true circles. The joints can be placed to bear against anticipated loads and asymmetrical loads imposed by dipping strata. In the arches now being manufactured clearance widths up to 19 ft are obtainable in weights of sections from 9 to 30 lb per ft. The circular cross sections are available in the same weights ranging from 8 to 16 ft diam. At present most of the arches sold are supplied only in carload lots. It is hoped that demand will grow so that distributors can stock various weights and sections to give small operators a chance to try this new type of rock support under their own particular conditions. Several excellent papers have discussed the properties of various sections now manufactured, the dimensions of the sets obtainable, and their application under widely differing conditions. The present article will describe the methods and results of a special use of the arches at Kaiser Steel mine No. 3. Sunnyside, Utah. Problem at Mine No. 3 : In 1953 Kaiser Steel Corp. laid out Sunnyside mine No. 3 to recover coking coal left by the previous operator, Utah Fuel Co.. below workings that had been abandoned in 1928. Two seams had been worked, the upper and lower, separated by 30 to 42 ft of rock. Approximately 10 million tons of coal had been extracted from this area some 3000 ft down the itch from the outcrop to a 1500-ft depth of cover. INTRODUCTION It is my intention in this paper to deal with gold, uranium, diamonds, platinum, manganese, chrome, vanadium and heavy mineral sands. These are the most important strategic minerals produced by the Republic of South Africa which are not covered in other sessions of this program. In each case I have high- lighted the statistics and peculiar advantages which combine to make South Africa a vital source of these minerals. Before proceeding to give individual attention to these minerals I believe it would be useful to define what I mean by 'strategic'. The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines strategic in the context of materials as 'essential for war'. However it is commonly used in a much broader sense than this (often, in fact, very loosely) and I prefer to define it as 'concerned with the acquisition and maintenance of power, whether economic, political or military.' A VITAL SOURCE In dealing with the individual minerals I have quoted statistics which are contained in Tables 1, 2 and 3. Table 1 clearly shows the absolute size of the South African mineral industry. However, it can also be used to demonstrate the importance of the industry to the South African economy if compared with the GNP in 1980 of about R60 billion. Table 4 illustrates clearly how important South Africa is as a supplier of these minerals to most of the important industrialized countries of the Western World. Gold If anyone had any doubts about the inclusion of gold in a list of strategic minerals I am sure that the above definition of 'strategic' will convince them that it certainly belongs there. Similarly no one is likely to have any doubt about the fact that South Africa is a vital source of supply. Tables 2 and 3 show that in 1980 we had 51% of the world's reserves and accounted for 55% of world production. The figures for the Western World are considerably higher. The only other major producer, of course, is Russia, with small but significant production in the Pacific Rim area coming from Australia, Canada, Latin America, Papua New Guinea, Philippines and the U.S. All South African mine gold production is shipped in bullion form containing about 88% gold and 9% silver to the Rand Refinery which is a modern refinery with large scale units capable of refining half a ton of bullion at a time. The Refinery is equipped to produce standard 'good delivery' gold as well as 9999 gold and 999 silver. The Refinery also produces the 22 karat blanks which are, used by the South African Mint to produce Kruger Rands. It goes without saying that the South African gold mining industry leads the world in all aspects of deep-level, narrow-reef mining technology. The industry's metallurgists, too, have a record of tenacious and continuing efforts to improve extraction to the level of the present finely honed efficient process used on all the modern mines. Uranium In 1980 South Africa had 14% of the uranium reserves of the Western World and accounted for 14% of production. In view of the paucity of data I am not in a position to estimate figures for the total world. All the other major sources of uranium in the Western World are situated around the Pacific Rim, with the U.S. and Canada already being major suppliers and accounting for 38% and 17% of Western World production in 1980. Australian production at the time was small but they have very large reserves and production is already rising rapidly. The U.S., Canada and Australia account respectively for 22%, 19% and 29% of the uranium reserves of the Western World. South Africa has been a major producer continuously for 30 years. Nearly all the uranium produced, amounting to about 115 000 tons up to the end of 1981, was a by-product or co-product of gold extraction. During that time the industry has frequently led the world in technological innovation, and has established a reputation as a reliable producer of a consistent, high-grade product. In the latter respect, it is helped by the fact that production is marketed by one company, Nuclear Fuels Corporation, which also blends, dries and calcines the product from the individual mines and samples and assays it before shipping. Diamonds Diamonds are the rock on which the South African mineral industry is founded. The discovery of diamonds in 1866 gave rise to the first major mineral industry in the country and the profits from diamond mining helped to finance the gold mining industry 20 years later. Although now overshadowed by gold, diamonds are still very important in the overall picture of mineral production and exports, as can be seen in Table 1. There are really three separate diamond markets - gem, natural industrial, and synthetic - and, to be meaningful, statistics should be provided separately. Unfortunately separate figures are not available. The figures in Tables 2 and 3 show that, for gem and natural industrial together, South Africa ranks third in the world in production and second in reserves. South Africa is a major producer of synthetics and probably ranks second in the world after the U.S. Recently, of course, Australia was the scene of a major diamond discovery and will soon become the only

The progress made in testing the strength of rocks and minerals as they are encountered in mine operation is reviewed. An attempt is made to correlate these physical measurements with abrasive hardness, grindability, and behavior in comminution on one hand and fracture of rocks in pillars and roof control on the other. THIS paper reviews the progress made in testing the strength of rocks, ores, coal, salts, and other minerals as they are encountered in mine operations. It attempts to correlate the results of these physical measurements with technological properties more useful to the mining engineer: abrasive hardness, grindability, and behavior in comminution on one hand, and roof control, fracture of rocks in pillars, and mining methods with controlled caving on the other. In the following pages, the materials discussed will be referred to as rocks. Basic to rock mechanics and comminution are the problems of strength, elastic behavior, and failure, common to all brittle materials. A distinction will be drawn as to theoretical and applied research, and discussion of the progress made in each field will include test data obtained by the U.S. Bureau of Standards,1-1 the U.S. Bureau of Mines," the Iowa Engineering Experiment Station,"." the Committee on Geophysical Research at Harvard University,'" Basic Industries Research of the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co.,11,12 by Philipps,13 and by Mueller," to name only a few. With refinements of testing methods and increased standardization. more useful and more comparable results have been achieved. This is especially important in testing a material like rock, as the inherent heterogeneity demands careful and exacting procedures. New measuring procedures that appear to supersede well known standard methods have contributed to faster and less costly testing yet have introduced new concepts, with implications as to comparability of results which must be watched. Reference is made to the sonic method for determining elastic properties," to be discussed in detail below. Basic Investigations Historically, all work in the field has started with the simplest determinations such as those for crushing strength, abrasive hardness, and grindability. These serve the limited objectives in the researcher's field of specialization: building construction, road ballast, roof control in mines, comminution, and seismic prospecting. Occasionally, fundamental properties like the modulus of elasticity E and Poisson's ratio v have been determined with the idea that they might have some bearing on the technological properties of the material under investigation. But it was not until the work of Philipps,13 of Harvard University,'" and of the U.S. Bureau of Mines"' that sufficient basic data were collected to allow researchers to go beyond the technological test and find the fundamental laws behind the behavior of rocks in mine and mill operations. The properties to be looked for are those that describe the elastic behavior of any material, the modulus of elasticity E and Poisson's ratio v being the ones determinable with least difficulties. Only two such properties are required to compute any other property such as the shear modulus, the modulus of rigidity, and the bulk modulus, all of which are related to each other according to well known equations of the theory of elasticity." In spite of their heterogeneous character, all rocks tested have possessed elastic properties. This does not mean that rocks of the same type always have the same modulus of elasticity, which varies exactly as the crushing strength or any other physical property of a rock can spread over a wide range. This has been explained by imperfections of the material always found in rocks, but to some extent this scattering of data is caused by inaccuracies inherent in the testing methods. Modulus of Resilience, a Criterion of Failure Increased availability of E values should allow us to test the validity of the quantity of strain energy theory which has been used in the solution of roof control problems by Philipps13 and by Holland.'" Recently Bond and Wang12 have applied this theory to explain the failure of an elastic material in comminution. Actually it is a very old theory, proposed as far back as 1885 by Beltrami.16 By its assumption the condition of yielding is determined by the term S2 M, = — x volume. Here M, is the modulus of 2E resilience, and its dimension is inch-pounds per cubic inch, that is, work per unit volume. Its numerical value is equal to the area under the stress-strain diagram. In the foregoing equation S is the yield stress (in psi) in tension or compression, whatever the case may be. E, the modulus of elasticity, is in psi. The great appeal of Beltrami's concept of stored energy lies in the fact that the two properties which seem to influence failure most, strength and elasticity, occur in the formula for the modulus of resilience. As an illustration of this, the moduli of resilience in compression of some typical materials tested by the U.S. Bureau of Mines" have been plotted in Fig. 1. The sample of concrete of conventional mix is shown only for the sake of comparison. Its determination was made in the Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering, University of Illinois. COLD work destroys long-range order, as was first observed by Dehlinger and Graf.1 Dahl2 showed that the mechanical disordering caused by cold work produces changes in those properties that are affected by long-range order. The existence of order has a marked effect on tile manner in which an alloy deforms and therefore on its mechanical properties.L' The relation between order and deformation behavior however, is only beginning to be understood. Seemann and G1ander4 suggested that cold work reduces an ordered alloy to a kind of gruel of antiphase domains. According to Cottrell,5 superdis-locations and pairs of dislocations in a slip plane connected by a strip of anti-phase domain boundary provide deformation mechanisms which do not change the state of order. In general, however, slip may be expected to produce new domain boundaries and destroy order if dislocations move on intersecting planes or cut through existing domain boundaries. The yield strength of an ordered alloy may pass through a maximum with decreasing domain size.5"7 The reduction of domain size resulting from cold work may, therefore, lead to a maximum in strength properties. Flinn8 suggests that dislocations can climb by short-range diffusion during deformation and thus can generate domain boundaries not only on slip planes, but also on other planes which will be those with the lowest domain-boundary energy. It has long been known that the rate of strain hardening of an alloy in the ordered state is larger than in the disordered state.3'9 Also the slip bands in ordered CU3, AU10 and Ni3Mn" are finer than in the disordered alloys. The stress which causes initial yielding in Cu,Au passes through a maximum with decreasing domain size.6'12 A maximum has also been observed in the hardness of ordered Ni3Mn as a function of strain.' These observations suggest, but do not prove, that domain size reduction occurs during deformation. According to Fisher13 slip destroys short-range order and thus the strength of an alloy is related to the degree of short-range order present. Rudman and Averbach14 and Averbach et a1.,15 demonstrated that cold work reduces short-range order in copper-gold and gold-silver alloys. Destruction of long-range and short-range order by cold work implies slip on an appreciable fraction of planes. Yielding of an alloy in which short-range order exists or antiphase domain boundaries are present should be discontinuous because the first dislocations moving across the slip plane meet with the largest resistance.5 Such discontinuous yielding has been observed in CU3AU6,16 and Cuzn.l7 This phenomenon, however, can also be explained by mechanisms not involving order.b The published investigations of the effects of cold work on alloys with long-range or short-range order have not been covered thoroughly in reviews of order-disorder phenomena. These investigations, therefore, will be listed here. They have been concerned with strength properties> 2,3,6,8,9,12,16-21 electrical resistivity,2,4,18,19,21-26: thermoelectric power, magnetic properties,2,18,21,26 and X-ray strain'1,2,14,15,27,28 The slip systems and the appearance of the microstructure after deformation in ordered and disordered alloys have also been investigated. 6.10.ll,l7,23,29,30 The alloys used in these investigations were copper-gold. 1-4,6,9,10,14,16,18 23-26,28,29 copper-zinc. L7. 19. 20,30 nickel-manganese,2 11,21 iron-aluminum. iron-nickel,' copper palladium,4,18,22 gold-silver.4,18,22 and palladium-silver-copper.4 In the work reported here. the changes in properties of polycrystalline Cu3Au were investigated as functions of strain in wire drawing and rolling. GENERAL OUTLINE For more than one hundred years, asbestos ore has been mined on Les Mines d’Amiante Bell's property at Thetford-Mines , Quebec, Canada. In 1878, the first tons of fibre were produced. The mine operated as an open pit until 1951 at a yearly production of about 330 000 mt of ore. Since 1951, the mine has operated underground using a block caving method. The mine produced 725 000 mt per year until 1978, when the rate of production was increased to 1 100 000 mt. The ore was produced entirely fm the first lift on 650 level until 1976. Then, a second lift on 950 level was put into operation to replace production facilities fm the first lift which is now exhausted. Annual fibre production is 72 500 mt with grades £ran 3 to 7. The total work force is 600 people. The host rock is a peridotite partially serpentinized. The asbestos fibre seams occur as stockwork deposit structurally controlled by talcose shear zone. The geological rock formations are heavily jointed and have a wide range of competence. Asbestos ore bodies have an heterogeneous nature which des difficult geological interpretation. THE GRIZZLY METHODS A full gravity method was used on the first level where the caved ore was drawn from finger raises onto grizzly bars spaced at 480 mn. Oversize blocks were reduced by secondary blasting. The ore fell by gravity in- to the ore pass below the grizzly chamber and was loaded into 5.7 mt haulage cars through a 1.2 m wide chute. Access to the undercut drift was fm the grizzly drift through finger raises. The undercut trough was drilled and blasted in a 1.2 m interval ring sequence into a slot situated at the end of each panel. The undercut stope was emptied through the finger raises. The undercut retreated from South to North at blast interval determined by the finger raises spacing. Fig. 1 represents the various steps involved with the grizzly method. Extraction drift dimensions were opened 1.8 m wide x 2.4 m high with anchor rock bolts and wire mesh where safety required them during excavation. Grizzly chambers were excavated at 2.4 x 2.4 x 4.6 m long on a 7.6 x 7.6 m grid spacing. Ore passes with dimensions of 1.5 x 1.5 m were developed from the haulage drift. On the extraction level, headings were drilled with jacklegs and cleaned by slusher into ore passes to the haulage chutes. The support used in the grizzly chambers was square concrete structure with 150 mn H beam reinforcement. The H beam was partially buried in the concrete and had one free face to allow for difference frequency of blast vibration between concrete and steel. The supported brow of the chamber had an opening 1.5 x 2.1 m. Ore passes were ring concreted 150 mn thick without any reinforcement. A 24 MPa compressive strength concrete was pumped and poured in pre-assembled forms. Based on the success of this method on the first level, the same layout was repeated on the second level. With the start of undercutting on the second lift, signs of deterioration were noticed in extraction drifts. At first, there was great concern as the operators were confident that standard repair techniques could cope with such a situation. An intensive program of support repair and a reduction of draw resulted. The following method of repairs were used: 1) Steel square sets of 150 mn H beam at 0.6 m intervals were installed. 2) This was reduced later to 0.3 m interval and eventually to a skin to skin steel structure. 3) Yieldable arches were introduced spaced at 0.9 m intervals, linked laterally with 150 m. H beam. 4) The yieldable arches spacing was then reduced to 0.46 m and eventually installed skin to skin. However, this support was not successful.

NICKEL-RICH alloys hardened with small additions of titanium and aluminum and centered around that region of face-centered-cubic primary solid solution, 7, where the atomic ratio of nickel chromium is about 3 to 1, form an important series of high temperature materials because of their resistance to oxidation, high temperature strength, and excellent creep characteristics at elevated temperatures.' With suitable heat treatment it is possible to precipitate a phase based on the ordered face-centered-cubic y' phase, Ni,,Al, from the randomly ordered nickel-rich y face-centered-cubic primary solid solution. By adjusting the ratio of aluminum to titanium the precipitation of needles of the hexagonal intermetallic compound n-NiaTi may be effected. In the present investigation, the main interest was focused on the interrelationships among the y, y, and 7 phases. By using alloying elements of high purity and a suitable melting technique the presence of carbides and nitrides could be completely obviated, although it is realized that their presence is probably essential in alloys of commercial importance. As a preliminary to the study of the Ni-Cr-Ti-A1 system, it was necessary to establish the constitutional diagrams of the three contiguous systems, Ni-Cr-Al, Ni-Ti-Al, and Ni-Cr-Ti, which together form the nickel-rich corner of the Ni-Cr-Ti-A1 quaternary tetrahedron. Accounts of this work on the ternary systems have already been published by the author. A preliminary disclosure of the author's investigations on the ternary and quaternary systems has been made by Hignett2 and has since stimulated work in the same field by Nordheim and Grant." Before the detailed account of the quaternary system, a brief description will be given of the three contiguous ternary diagrams on which it is ultimately founded. Ni-Cr-Ti System The 750° and 1000°C temperature isothermals of the Ni-Cr-Ti system as determined by Taylor and Floyd' are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The single phase fields of greatest interest are occupied by the extensive face-centered-cubic y primary solid solution of chromium and titanium in nickel, and the close-packed-hexagonal Daltonide, n-Ni3Ti, from which tie-lines radiate across the very wide y+n two-phase field. The chromium-rich primary solid solution is represented by a. As may be seen from the diagrams, the extent of the y phase field increases quite appreciably as the temperature is raised from 750" to 1000°C. Isoparametric lines for the y phase are shown in Fig. 1. They are interesting in that they are almost parallel to the y/r+n boundary. Thus the determination of the tie-line directions is entirely dependent on the exact stoichiometry of composition of the 7 phase. Ni-Ti-Al System The 750°C isothermal section of the nickel-rich portion of the system Ni-Ti-A1 as determined by Taylor and Floyd is shown in Fig. 3.' The regions of greatest interest are the extensive y primary solid solution of titanium and aluminum in nickel, the y' Berthollide phase field based on the ordered face-centered-cubic structure of Ni3Al, and the hexagonal Daltonide phase, n-Ni3Ti. As may be seen from Figs. 3 and 4 the area occupied by the y phase is substantially the same at 750°C as at 1000°C, but the area of the 7 phase is considerably greater at the higher temperature. The tie-lines radiate from n-Ni3Ti across the y+v and y' + v two-phase fields and are evenly distributed

The temperature, strain rate, and structure dependence of the flow stress in a poly crystalline Fe-2 pct Mn alloy was investigated between 77" and 370°K. It was possible to identify the low-temperature data from 77° to 160°K with Dorn and Rajnak's theory of the Peierls mechanism of plastic deformation. Above 160°K one or more thermally activated mechanisms must he operative; however, these were not identified in this investigation. The mechanistic basis for the rapid decrease in the flow stress of bcc metals with an increase in temperature over the low-temperature range is yet being debated. Various dislocation mechanisms have been suggested in the past but the agreement between the various proposed theories and the experimental results have not been definitive. In the present paper, the authors will demonstrate that the plastic behavior of polycrystalline iron containing 2 wt pct Mn plus interstitials agrees excellently with predictions based on the Peierls mechanism from 77" to 160°K whereas from 160" to about 370°K other as yet unidentified thermally activated mechanisms take over. Undoubtedly, the overlap of these mechanisms with the Peierls mechanism contributed to the difficulties of rationalizing the low-temperature behavior of iron and its alloys. I) EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES AND RESULTS Although extensive data are now available on the effect of temperature and strain rate on the flow stress of various bcc metals and alloys, it was, nevertheless, deemed necessary for the objectives of the present study to obtain highly accurate data of the type most pertinent for checking the theories on a series of well-documented work-hardened states. Iron containing 2 wt pct Mn was used in this investigation in order to obtain a lower ductile to brittle transition temperature than that for iron.' The additional elements present were 0.004 pct C, 0.05 pct 0, 0.004 pct S, 0.003 pct P, 0.006 pct N, and 0.001 pct Si. The as-received 3/8 by 3/4 in. bars were cold-rolled to 0.100-in. thickness, recrystallized under argon for 30 min at 1073"~, further cold-rolled to 0.063-in. thickness, and finally recrystallized under argon for 30 min at 1000°K. This treatment gave a stable reproducible equiaxed grain structure having an average grain diameter of about 90 p. Prior to the final recrystallization treatment, the sheet was machined into tensile specimens 1/4 in. wide having a 1.625-in.-long gage section. All specimens were tested in controlled-temperature baths on an Instron Testing Machine. For convenience in the theoretical analyses the data will be given in terms of the shear stress for flow, 7, the shear strain rate, f, and the shear strain, y. A series of three standard strain-hardened states were obtained by prestraining specimens at 300°K and at a shear strain rate of 7.68 x lo-' per sec to three stress levels of 6.89 X l08, 10.3 X lo8, and 14.5 x 10' dynes per sq cm, respectively. Immediately following this prestrain the temperature bath was changed and each specimen was pulled in tension at either f = 7.68 X lo-' or f = 3.06 X 10"3 per sec. In terms of the accuracy that was achieved, the values obtained did not deviate more than *0.1 X 10' dynes per sq cm and * 1°K from the reported values of stress and temperature and not more than *5 pct in the reported values of the strain rate. The tensile stresses were converted to shear stresses using a factor of 1/2. The shear stress for the initiation of flow at the test temperature was determined by taking a y = 6.16 x 10'3 offset. from the modulus line at which point good accuracy could be achieved in determining y and the associated flow stress 7, with only a negligible increase in the pre-

The titanium-rich end of the Ti-AI phase diagram has been determined to the compound TiAI3 (62.7 pct Al), thus joining the aluminum-rich portion previously investigated by others and completing the diagram. Micrographic analysis and X-ray diffraction were the chief methods used to determine the phase relationships. THE Ti-Al phase diagram has been investigated as part of a program on titanium phase diagrams for the Wright Air Development Center. Included in the available information concerning the phase relationships in titanium-rich Ti-A1 alloys is a brief statement by Brown' that: "aluminum raises the transformation temperature to 1000°C (183Z°F)." This observation is interesting in that it is the first example of a metallic alloying component raising the transformation temperature of titanium, and consequently widening the field of the a solid solution. Busch and Freyer' presented resistivity data which indicated the formation of titanium-rich solid solutions of 1 and 3 pct A1 alloys prepared by powder metallurgy methods. Duweza found that there is only one other intermediate phase other than the known compound TiA1, (62.7 pct Al). This phase, designated as y, is of variable composition; its crystal structure is of the AuCu type and is therefore based on the composition TiAl (36.02 pct Al). Earlier work on the constitution of the aluminum-rich alloys has been reviewed by Hansen, and need not be discussed here. The tetragonal crystal lattice of TiAl,, as found by Fink, Van Horn, and Budge," was confirmed by Brauer." Recently, Schubert7 has reported that TiA1, is homogeneous within a limited composition range; however, the solubility limits were not given. The Ti-A1 phase diagram as presented in. this paper was determined by micrographic analysis of alloys containing from 1 to 62 pct Al, annealed at and quenched from temperatures between 700" and 1400°C. The phases and phase ranges investigated extend to the compound TiA1, (62.7 pct Al) to join the aluminum-rich end of the system determined by other investigators, thus completing the diagram. Methods of Investigation Preparation of Alloys: Iodide titanium, 99.9+ pct pure, obtained from the New Jersey Zinc Co., and high-purity (99.99+ pct) aluminum sheet from the Aluminum Co. of America were used to make up alloy ingots weighing 10 to 20 g. Detailed descriptions of melting techniques have been presented previously for work on the Ti-Mo and Ti-Cb> nd Ti-Si" phase diagrams. Briefly, the melting practice consisted of arc melting an accurately weighed charge in a copper block crucible insert in a non-consumable tungsten electrode furnace, under helium at atmospheric pressure. All ingots were carefully weighed after melting to detect possible losses. Comparison of weight before and after melting showed no appreciable weight changes. Also, chemical analyses were in close agreement with nominal compositions, Table I. The diagram as presented is, therefore, based on nominal compositions. Alloys were prepared having the following nominal aluminum contents: 1 ... 36 (1 pct increments), 38, 40, 41, 42.5, 44, 45, 46, 47.5, 49 . . . 64 (1 pct increments), 67, 70, 80, and 90. Ingots with up to 14 pct A1 were cold-pressed various amounts in order to increase the rate of attaining equilibrium structures on heat treatment. The amount of cold deformation that could be applied decreased with increasing aluminum content, until alloys containing 12 pct A1 or more cracked after only a few percent deformation. Weight loss measurements were made using a sensitive microbalance operating in a high vacuum system. The Langmuir equation was used to Calculate the vapor pressures of the several metals and alloys. Aluminum lowered the vapor pressure of i9,on in a 5.4 Al-94.6 Fe alloy, and of iron and chromium in a 4.8 Al-21.5 Cr-73.7 Fe alloy. The influence of oxide films formed on the alloys on the effective vapor pressures of the alloys was also studied. These studies were used to aid in the inte9,pretation of the high temperature oxidation of alloys based on iron, chromium, and aluminum. RECENT studies on the oxidation of chromium1 and the heat resistant alloy 5 Al-22 Cr-73 Fe showed transitions in the rate of oxidation at 900o and 1050oC respectively. The transition for chromium occurred at a temperature where the rate of evaporation of chromium from oxide-free surfaces equalled the rate of chromium atoms reacting with oxygen. This paper presents new vapor pressure studies on iron, chromium, and the specially prepared alloys 5.4 Al-94.6 Fe, 21.9 Cr-78.1 Fe, and 4.8 Al-21.5 Cr-73.7 Fe. The ternary alloy is similar in basic composition to the patented heat-resistant commercial alloy known as Kanthal. The binary alloys were studied to show the individual effects of aluminum on the vapor pressure of iron and of iron on the vapor pressure of chromium. The purpose of the proposed studies was to test the influence of metal volatility on the oxidation behavior of heat-resistant alloys based on iron, chromium, and aluminum. Since oxide films formed on the metal may limit metal transfer to the surface, the influence of oxide films on metal volatility was also studied. LITERATURE A) Vapor Pressure. The vapor pressure of iron has been studied by Jones, Langmuir, and Mackay,' Dornte and Nrton. Edwards. Johnston. and Ditmar. and McCabe, Hudson, and Paton. Stull and SinkeT have calculated a heat of sublimation at 298° K of 99.83 kcalper g atom. The vapor pressure of chromium has been reported by Bauer and Brunner,' Speiser, Johnston, and Blakburn, Gulbransen and Andrew,'' Vintaikin,o McCabe, Hudson, and Paton, and Kubaschewski and Heymer.12 Good agreement was obtained except for the early work of Bauer and Brunner.' Stull and Sinke7 calculate a heat of sublimation at 298°K of 95.0 kcal per g atom. Vapor pressure measurements on aluminum have been made by Brewer and Searcy,13 Bauer and Brunner,aand Farkas.I4 Stull and Sinke,7 giving Brewer and Seary's' data the most weight, derive a heat of sublimation of 77.5 kcal per g atom at 298 oK. B) Method. Two methods15 are used for measuring the vapor pressure of metals: 1) The Langhuir free evaporation method, and 2) the Knudsen effusion method, In the Langmuir method, used in the present work, the vapor pressure of the metal P is given by the equation: Here M is the molecular weight of the vapor species. T is the absolute temperature. (dw/dt) is the rate of sublimation in g per sq cm per sec and a is the condensation coefficient. a is a measure of the efficiency of condensation of molecules striking the metal surface from the vapor. If condensation results from each collision a is unity. This coefficient has been found to be unity,a, le for metals. These results establish the general validity of the Langmuir free evaporation method as applied to metals. EXPERIMENTAL A) Vacuum Microbalance Method. A modification of the Langmuir free evaporation method was used. Strip specimens were suspended from a sensitive microbalance operating inside of a high vacuum system. For alloys, microbalance methods17 must be used on large area samples at relatively low temperatures to minimize composition changes. The

The m.echanica1 properties, at high lzomologous temperatures, of the intermetallic compounds InzBi and Mg17A112 were measured as a .function of temperature, applied strain rate, previous thermal and mechanical history, and composition. Mgl,Al12 was investigated ilz compression, whereas Zn,Bi was investigated in tension. A decrease inflow stress with increasing strain was observed jor both alloys. The results obtained are discussed in terms of the dislocation-multiplication processes in these materials. MANY intermetallic compounds are reported to undergo a brittle-ductile transition at high homologous temperatures.' There is evidence in the literature that some of these compounds exhibit a large yield drop when plastically deformed.'j3 Both of these forms of behavior are shown by the covalent elements germanium and silicon4,5 and also by certain ionic compounds.8 The present work is a study of the deformation, at high homologous temperatures (>2/3 Tm), of two intermetallic compounds, In2Bi and Mg17Al12. InzBi has a disordered hexagonal structure7 (c/a = 0.598) and a solubility range of 32.3 — 33.2 at. pct Bi.8 It has a melting range from 72° to 89°C. Mg17Al12 has an ordered bcc (A12 type)7 structure and exists over the range 50 to 60 at. pct Mg8 with a melting range from 437° to 462°C. We have been unable to find any reference to previous investigations of the mechanical properties of BiIn,. Novikovg has reported that cast samples of Mg17A112 show ductility, when bend-tested, at temperatures above 380°C. EXPERIMENTAL Ingots of In2Bi and Mg17Al12 were melted under an argon atmosphere and cast, in situ, in a graphite crucible. The materials used were of 99.99 pct purity. The alloys prepared contained 66.9 at. pct In in the case of In2Bi and 58.4 at. pct Mg in the case of m17A112. The ingots were homogenized and then extruded. Two-in.-diam Mg17Al12 ingots were extruded at 375°C to give 3/8-in.-diam rod. The rate of formation of this rod was 0.25 in. per min. One-in.-diam InzBi ingots were extruded at 20°C, using a rate of 1 in. per min, to give 1/8-in.-diam rod. In both cases the extruded rod had a recrystal- lized, fine-grain, structure. (For Mg17Al12, d = 11.2 µ; for BiIn2, d = 22 µ.) Mechanical-property determinations were made in a hard-beam machine, in tension in the case of In2Bi and in compression with Mgl7Al12. The tensile tests were on specimens having a gage length of 1.1/2 in. and a diameter of 1/8 in. The compression tests on Ml7A112 were on specimens of 3/8 in. diam by 3/8 in. high and the ends were coated with poly-tetrafluorethylene to minimize friction. RESULTS In2Bi. Fig. 1 shows, particularly at the higher applied strain rates, that In2Bi exhibits a marked yield drop as the deformation increases to about 2 pct, after which the material shows neither hardening nor softening up to 15 pct strain. The magnitude of the yield drop, the stress in the region of flow under constant stress (the stress plateau), and the 0.5 pct proof stress were all dependent upon the applied strain rate according to an expression of the form

By measuring the hardness of metals at temperatures just above and just below their allotropic change point, it has been established that crystal structure has a real effect upon the strength of metals. The DPH of cobalt, iron, titanium, uranium, and zirconium have been measured at temperatures up to 1000°C. It was found that the body-centered-cubic crystal structure is always the softer structure when it is involved in an allotropic transformation. The close-packed and more complex structures are inherently harder, and may be expected, therefore, to be better base materials for high strength alloys. IT has been observed that for metals with nearly the same melting point (i.e., tin and lead, magnesium and aluminum) the metal with the more complex crystal structure has a higher tensile strength and hardness. It might be asked whether this effect is really caused by the difference in crystal structure; and, if so, just what is the contribution of crystal structure to the strength of these metals. A qualitative answer to these questions can be obtained by measuring the change in hardness produced by the change in structure in metals exhibiting allotropic forms. The evidence for changes in mechanical properties during allotropic transformations is rather meager. In 1909, Rosenhain and Humfrey' observed that "ß" iron showed much less deformation at the transformation temperature than a iron. By means of a torsion test, Lee found that iron bars were "critically plastic" at the a-7 transformation temperature. Sauerwald and Knehans have shown that the dynamic hardness of iron increases between 900" and 1000°C. In 1930, Albert Sauveur' presented data on the hardness, tensile strength, and torsional strength of pui-e iron up to 1000°C. He concluded, "At 900°C, the a iron transforms into y iron, and this is accompanied by increased strength and stiffness and decreased ductility." The same year, Schischokin" obtained data on the hardness of thallium at temperatures above and below its transformation temperature. His data are replotted on semilogarithmic coordinates as Fig. 1. The fact that his data fall on straight lines in this type of plot is believed to attest to the purity of his metal and the accuracy of his results. In 1941, Nadai and Manjoine" obtained tensile data on pure iron with an indicated increase in strength at about 900°C. These experiments make it quite evident that changes in mechanical properties occur when a metal transforms from one crystal structure to another; but, except for Schischokin's data on thallium, none of the measurements seem accurate enough to determine the relative magnitude of the mechanical property change. Materials The metals that have been examined for changes in hardness during transformation include l—as- deposited commercial electrolytic cobalt about 99.7 pct pure, 2—Armco ingot iron, 3—are-melted iodide titanium of a purity in excess of 99.8 pct, 4—uranium of a purity in excess of 99.5 pct, 5—are-melted iodide zirconium of a purity in excess of 99.8 pct, 6—annealed, 0.08 pct C, rimmed steel, and 7—commercially pure RC55 titanium. While the purity of the first five of these materials leaves something to be desired, it will be noted that the observed hardness discontinuities occurred at the accepted transformation temperatures. (These temperatures are indicated by vertical arrows in Figs. 1 and 3 through 7.) The last two materials are commercial alloys introduced to show the effect of minor alloying elements upon the hot hardness curve. Apparatus Hardnesses at elevated temperatures were determined by means of a vacuum hot hardness machine. A diagram showing the basic features of this machine appears as Fig. 2. Silicon dioxide films have been prepared on silicon wafers by the oxidation of SiH, near 400°C. Results previously reported by Goldsmith and Kern7 have been qualitatively corrobovated using a system of different geometry, and significantly greater deposition rates have been achieved. The deposition rate is independent of thickness and nearly independent of the O2/SiH, ratio over a wide range; however, the rate is strongly temperature-dependent. The structure of the deposit depends upon the cleanliness of the substrate, and the electrical field strength of the deposited oxide depends upon the nature of the electrodes. MULTILEVEL interconnects in integrated circuits using aluminum metallization require an insulator that can be deposited at low temperature. Because the A1-Si eutectic is only 577°C, the maximum deposition temperature must be below about 500°C to prevent reaction of the aluminum with the silicon and with other materials in the integrated circuit. Many methods of depositing insulating films of SiO, and other dielectrics have been reported'-6 but the technique described by Goldsmith and Kern7 offers the simplest method of preparing SiO, films. The technique involves the reaction of SiH, and 0, to form SiO, films in the 300" to 500°C temperature range. Previous work using this gas system has been reported8 and the initial development work at Philco Microelectronics was done at the East Coast R&D Laboratories. 9 This paper corroborates some of the results of Goldsmith and Kern,7 shows that much higher deposition rates can be obtained than previously reported, and presents some observations on the structure of deposited SiO, films. EXPERIMENTAL CONDITIONS Fig. 1 is a schematic drawing of the apparatus used in this study. It differs from that of Goldsmith and Kern in that 1) the gases are mixed before they enter the reaction chamber, 2) there is no fritted glass diffuser, and 3) the wafers are stationary during deposition. The control thermocouple was in a well located 0.06-in. from the substrate, and three gas supplies were used: 1 pct SiH4 in N 2, O 2, and N 2. Water vapor must be excluded from the plumbing to prevent the formation of colloidal SiO, and the SiH4 must be diluted with an inert gas because SiH4-0, mixtures are extremely flammable above about 4 pct SiH The wafer temperature was determined by attaching a thermocouple to a test wafer and the temperature was maintained to +5 C. The conditions used in this investigation are listed in Table I. The temperature range was chosen for compatibility with the A1-Si system. The volume ratio of 0, to SiH4 is the actual volume of 0, delivered to that of SiH4, taking into account the initial dilution of the SiH4. This ratio, which was used by Goldsmith and Kern,7 is a useful indicator of the experimental conditions. The active/inactive ratio is the ratio of the volume of active gases, SiH4 and O2, delivered to the volume of dilution gas. The active/inactive ratio is an important parameter to specify for deposition rate determinations since it determines the amounts of reactants that arrive at the sample per unit time. Fairly high dilution ratios were necessary to achieve uniform deposits of SiO,. Most of the process characterizations were performed on the polished (111) face of 3 to 5 ohm-cm, n-type silicon wafers which were 0.009 in. thick; but the data approximately apply to deposition of SiO, on thin films of aluminum. It is difficult to obtain accurate deposition rate data over aluminum films because of coarsening the aluminum surface during exposure to 300" to 400°C. The deposited SiO, film fol-

The results of a number of binary and ternary systems have previously been published in the transactions of this society. The aluminum end of the binary aluminum-titanium system has been studied. This system has received relatively little attention. To the authors' knowledge, there are two previous papers on this subject. E. van Erckelens1 determined the constitutional diagram reproduced in Fig. 1. .According, to this diagram, the liquids represents the separation of TiAl4 (Ti = 30.7 per cent.). He concluded that this is the composition of the compound, because in his work the eutectic horizontal terminated at 30.7 per cent. titanium and the metallographic examination of a sample of this composition revealed only one phase. According to the constitutional diagram developed by W. Manchot and A. Leber,2 reproduced in Fig. 2 from data given in their article, the liquidus represents the separation of the compound TiAl3 (Ti = 37.2 per cent. ). The composition of the compound was derived in a manner similar to that utilized by van Erckelens. Moreover, Manchot and Leber confirmed the composition of the compound by analysis of the constituent left as a residue after dissolving the alloys in weak sodium hydroxide solution. Although these are the only publications describing the constitution of the system, other investigators have studied the composition of the titanium compound. L. In selecting the best system of mining for a particular operation, many different factors must be considered. The system to be finally selected should be that which provides: 1) The highest possible degree of safety for mine personnel. 2) The lowest cost per ton of product. 3) The maximum coal production per man-shift. 4) The most suitable quality of final product, considering its intended use. 5) The maximum percent recovery of coal per acre of reserve consistent with cost and subsidence rights. 6) Consideration for the ecology of the area. Some of the important factors to be considered when choosing a method of mining are: 1) Amount of cover over the coal seam. 2) Type of the rock in the overburden. 3) Characteristics of the coal seam including: (a) the thickness of the coal seam; (b) the nature and location of any impurities or irregularities; (e) the dip (or pitch) of the coal seam; (d) the nature and direction of any definite cleavage ill the czoa1 seam; (e) the hardness of the coal; (f) the structural strength of the coal; and (g) the presence, anti amount, of explosive gas (methane). 4) Quantity of water likely to be encountered in the mining operation. 5) Nature and strength of the roof (top) over the coal seam. 6) Nature and strength of the floor (bottom) under the coal seam. 7) Any previous or concurrent mining in seams above or below the coal seam to be worked. BLEACHING clays have been used extensively in the oil-refining industries for a number of years. Their use in water purification is relatively recent and less extensive. They are frequently classified as (1) those naturally active and (2) those active after artificial activation with acid. Fuller's earths fall within the general group of bleaching clays and gradually the commercial term "fuller's earth" has been applied to natural clays originating, for the most part, in the south-eastern section of the United States. Bentonitic clays are usually classed as activable and are prevalent in the southwestern section of the United States.1 Bleaching clays vary considerably in chemical and physical properties throughout the country, or even in different parts of one deposit (Table 1).
