Traditionally occupational health and safety (OH&S) has been managed for the direct benefits of reducing injury and illness to workers on mine sites. In the current skill shortage climate it is important to recognise the value that OH&S management can have in assisting mines in minimising their exposure to this issue. In times of skills shortage turnover is high as mines poach personnel from each other. This leads to loss of corporate knowledge and loss in productivity through the need to train new personnel in mine-specific operating procedures. In addition absenteeism can significantly disrupt production as there may be no ready replacements available for key jobs. Pressure will be placed upon workers to remain at work even though they are not completely fit for work, leading to presenteeism and consequently loss in productivity. In addition to the threats to routine operation, the loss of management and professional staff can significantly increase catastrophic risk through loss of experience and corporate knowledge. There is increased pressure to focus on events that occur regularly in the here and the now and underestimate the rare, or unlikely, events.The theme of this paper is that by properly addressing OH&S management at mine sites, companies can minimise their exposure to these problems. Put simplistically, a safe and healthy mine is a sustainable and productive mine. Case studies and relevant literature will be used to support this premise.CITATION:Cliff, D and Bailey, K, 2012. Coal dust explosions still remain the main hazard in the coal mining sector, notwithstanding their relatively wide recognition compared to other hazards and the development of effective methods of prevention. Coal dust explosions are still the cause of numerous catastrophes, often leading to fatalities. Fortunately, they rarely occur, and it is for this reason that their hazardous impact is often underestimated. This problem in Poland is being exclusively solved by the Central Mining Institute, Experimental Mine Barbara. Here, basic research on the phenomenon of coal dust explosions and prevention methods is carried out, as well as investigations into the causes and circumstances of past accidents. After 15 years of no coal dust explosion accidents in Poland (1987?2002), a few coal dust explosions have recently occurred, with tragic consequences. These events have taken place not only in hard coal mines, where the presence of dangerous coal dust is the result of common production cycle, and safety measures against coal dust explosions are subject to specific regulations, but also in coal-fired power plants. This is of special concern because prior to 1987, such accidents had been been reported only for coal mines and not for coal-fired power plants. In recent years, two dust explosions occurred in Polish power facilities: the Dolna Odra and Turow power plants. In both cases, coal dust explosions occurred in the fuel supply system, but biomass dust was also involved. The explosions caused significant damage to the systems and buildings. This paper gives description and schematics of the regions of catastrophic coal dust explosions that have occurred in recent years in Poland, as well as the results of post-accident investigations, presenting the coal dust explosion hazard at the accident scene The results specify in detail the state of safety measures against coal dust explosions in light of the relevant regulations in force, including amount of deposited coal dust, content of incombustible matter in coal dust, free moisture content in coal dust, state of coal dust explosion safety zones, and state of explosion barriers. The conclusions from the site inspection and post-accident investigations presented enable us to determine locations of explosion initiation, probable ignition sources, range of explosion flames, and explosion barrier performance. A complete elimination of coal dust explosion hazard at the site of dust deposition is practically impossible to achieve. Similarly, a total elimination of ignition source, which may be related to the occurrence of other natural hazards, equipment malfunction or human errors, is impossible. The examples of tragic events that took place in Polish coal mines and coal-fired power plants highlight shortcomings and mistakes made in terms of assessment and prevention measures taken against the coal dust explosion hazard.

Blasting accurately in underground drifts and creating a smooth contour requires proper drilling, knowledge about the apparent geology, a well designed blast pattern and ideally a smooth blasting product. These products are usually cartridged explosives with less energy and are charged in the contour holes in order to reduce the energy concentration and therefore the cracking into the surrounding rock. With the development of a new contour blasting system, a device can now be delivered to the industry that that avoids the additional storage of cartridged products when bulk explosives are used. The system consists of a foldable hose that is charged with bulk emulsion, in the same way as the rest of the blast, from the base to the collar of the hole. It centers automatically in the borehole and provides a decoupled charge. The paper describes the system in detail, gives background information on smooth blasting and presents the first successful field tests using the system in the drifts of an underground mine. It shows the advantages of blast results that produce more stable contours that reduce the amount, time and cost for support but also increase safety underground.

Chromite ore is of immense importance for the extraction of metallic chromium and chromium chemicals. The mineralogy and crystal structure of chromite phase are therefore important part of our investigation on the extraction chemistry of chromium species. In this investigation, we have studied the effect of the processing parameters, i.e., the temperature and the oxygen potential on the microstructure and composition of mineral phases formed in the Cr2O3 ?Al2O3 -FexOy -MgO system. In particular the importance of the spinodal decomposition reaction is emphasized in the extraction of chromium as sodium chromite and sodium chromate. Experiments were carried out in order to study the differences in the crystallography of different chromite minerals. Phase equilibria in natural chromite minerals were investigated by calcining chromite mineral in air, argon, and 5% hydrogen + argon atmospheres over a temperature range from 200 to 1200 °C. The effect of the oxygen partial pressure and temperature on the phase constituents of the calcined product has been discussed. The microstructural changes were examined using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the changes in elemental composition in different phases were analysed by electron probe micro analyser (EPMA). The results obtained from EPMA studies were used to calculate lattice parameter of the spinel lattice, and these values were compared with the values obtained from X-Ray powder diffraction data. On the basis of the experimental data, the mechanism of the spinodal decomposition of complex spinel phases is described under the influence of oxygen partial pressure and temperature.

It is known that the axial capacity of a displacement piles installed in clay varies with time. Consolidation theory suggests that dissipation of porewater pressure set-up during pile installation would lead to increased effective stress and hence higher pile resistance. In recent years a number of case histories have reported time dependent capacity increases for piles installed in sand. Although there is some debate regarding the physical mechanisms controlling this phenomenon, known as ageing, it is unrelated to pore pressure dissipation as piles in sand are installed in primarily drained conditions. A series of field tests designed to investigate ageing effects in soft clay are presented in this paper. Full-scale load tests on 6m long 250 mm square concrete piles, which were driven into soft clay are described. The piles were first tested approximately 100 days after installation, at which stage full equalization of the excess pore pressures had occurred. Static load tests were then performed up to 10 years after pile installation. The piles exhibited significant ageing, with their shaft resistance increasing by up to 66% over a 10 year period. Possible mechanisms for such aging characteristics are explored.

Pumps play a critical role in mining operations, and their energy consumption and environmental impact are significant. This paper addresses the need for a holistic approach to sustainable pump deployment by expanding on previous work presented at IMPC Asia Pacific 2022 and World Mining Congress 2023. The research takes a significant step forward by outlining a structured approach to estimate and demonstrate sustainability tailored for operational slurry pumps. It details the calculation methodologies used to quantify the carbon dioxide emissions from electricity, wear materials and transport, as well as sealing water usage. To enhance practicality and usability, a simplified visual representation—called sustainability metrics—has been developed to monitor overall efficiency. The sustainability metrics consist of the availability, pump efficiency, and water utilisation efficiency. The proposed methodology is integrated with Pumps Condition Monitoring Service to maximise benefits. Three case studies, from iron ore, copper, and nickel operations globally, were employed to evaluate the proposed methodology. The findings demonstrate the critical role of sustainability calculations in understanding pumps operation. These calculations improve awareness of the pump’s role in the sustainability journey and enable effective monitoring. The studies highlight that continuous monitoring paired with effective prescriptive maintenance strategy can significantly reduce power and water consumption while maximising pump availability. The case studies also reveal significant shortcomings in current operational practices and non-optimal maintenance regimes, emphasising the need for practical recommendations to maximise savings and optimise pump performance. In the context of increasing climate change awareness and the imperative for global decarbonisation, this research highlights the necessity of critically assessing methods and operations to drive sustainability in the mining industry. By adopting a holistic approach to sustainable pump deployment, mining operations can effectively reduce their environmental impact while enhancing operational efficiency and economic viability. The proposed methodology and case studies provide valuable insights and practical recommendations for mining companies seeking to achieve sustainable practices and contribute to a decarbonised future.

Numerous Colorado mountain tunnels that date to the late 1800s convey water to the farming and urban communities of the eastern Front Range. Repairs to these remote facilities, often located in public lands at altitudes of 11,000 feet or more, require detailed planning, close coordination with multiple agencies, and creative execution. Issues and solutions discussed include designing repairs in undocumented ground and support conditions, logistical challenges, work in a short summer construction window, stabilization of historically signicant structures, and proect delivery strategies. xamples that illustrate early contractor involvement, exibility in design, and construction solutions are presented.

During the last decades, it has become common practice in the Nordic countries to use dry deep mixing in soft clays with lime and cement in for example deep excavation pits in soft clay, or as a reinforcement of the passive zone within sheet pile walls. The shear strength of stabilised soils is affected by the stress conditions during curing and shearing. However, this is normally not taken into consideration. As the strength of the stabilised clay is stress dependent, excavation of the overlying soil will lead to a reduction of the confining stresses in the underlying stabilised soils which means that the shear strength will also be reduced. Under embankments on the other hand, the effect is reversed as the shear strength will be increased. In this study, laboratory tests have been performed on stabilised soils cured and tested under different stress conditions to quantify the stress effects in a Norwegian sensitive clay. In addition, direct simple shear tests on samples from in situ columns have been made with varying normal stresses. Results are presented showing an increase of shear strength of the stabilised soil with increased curing stresses, and an even higher increase with increased confining stress during shearing. The results are compared to field measurements along with a discussion of practical application of the findings.

Since the independent review of fatal accidents in the mining industry carried out by Dr Sean Brady (the ‘Brady Review’), High Reliability Organisations (HROs) and their operating principles have been discussed across the Queensland mining sector. HROs are organisations said to consistently avoid serious failures, reliably delivering their organisational objectives despite operating in environments characterised by high levels of inherent risk and/or operational complexity. HRO concepts have previously found application in other similarly hazardous industries to mining. However, as Hopkins (2009) pointed out, HROs ‘are very elusive creatures that inhabit the realm of theory more than the real world’. The Queensland Resources Council (QRC) with support from the Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health initiated a review of how HRO principles can be translated to the mining industry. The review was conducted by Noetic, an Australian management consulting company that specialises in hazardous industries, including mining and metals, and has prior experience applying HRO theory.

Many reports and papers have been delivered on projects under construction or already in operation, but we believe there are few that have been written about projects yet to be built specifically dealing with advanced mine and environmental planning. This paper describes such planning for Atlantic Richfield Company's Black Thunder mine. Project planning is a cyclic phenomenom involving four broadly overlapping planning steps (Figure 1). The demands of the public include needs that can be satisfied through planned resource development. Using a base of information that partly exists and must in part be gathered and updated, the preplanned development can be, evaluated. The evaluation process, with built-in environmental constraints leads to an implementation procedure. Implementation results in the development, including the release of the affected area to other public demands that follow.

"This paper presents the utilization of slurry walls methods for the recent remediation of three high hazard active dams in the United States. Tuttle Creek Dam, located in Manhattan, KS, required seismic retrofit. To this extent, transverse shear walls were installed on the downstream slope using self-hardening slurry (SHS) to reinforce the liquefiable foundation soils. Herbert Hoover Dike, located around Lake Okeechobee, FL, is subject to potential failure because of internal erosion, piping and slope instability at high water levels. The innovative use of the hydromill equipment with SHS allowed the successful construction of the cutoff wall through heterogeneous soils and rock. At Bolivar Dam, located in Bolivar, OH, under-seepage negatively affects the structural stability of the dam, and a partial seepage barrier wall is required through the upstream slope of the dam. In this case, the Contractor selected the plastic concrete seepage barrier, excavated by a combination of clamshell and hydromill equipment. The main features of the three projects are summarized in Table 1. IntroductionTuttle Creek Dam was constructed by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers (USACE) on the Big Blue River in North-East Kansas in the 1950s for flood control. Tuttle Creek Dam is a zoned earthfill embankment, 7,500 ft long and about 137 ft high with a crest width of 50 ft (Fig. 1). It is located in an area of moderate seismicity associated with an old continental rift zone located just to the east of the dam. The USACE, under the Dam Safety and Assurance Program, determined the need for remediation. Site investigations and geotechnical analyses identified the upper alluvial foundation sands as being susceptible to liquefaction when subjected to the Maximum Credible Earthquake.In 2005, USACE awarded a construction-manager-at-risk/early Contractor involvement contract. The USACE and the Contractor closely cooperated to identify the most effective technologies, materials and configurations to be used in the remediation. The original remediation design required both the upstream and downstream slope stabilization of liquefiable foundation. Results of refined seismic deformation analyses revealed that the stabilization of the downstream slope and toe was needed to protect the downstream seepage control system and to provide assurance that a liquefaction-induced flow slide would not occur (Stark et al., 2012)."

Real output expanded at a 3.0% rate worldwide in 1987, a slightly lower pace than the 3.2% rate in 1986. The decline was accounted for largely by slower growth in the U.S.S.R. and the East European countries, as well as in the developing countries (table 1). According to the International Monetary Fund, output of industrial countries output grew 3.1% and rose most strongly in Japan, the United Kingdom, and Canada (table 2). U.S. economic growth remained at 2.9%, the same as in 1986. Consumer and government spending declined in industrial countries, while gross fixed investment: rent increased. This increase in fixed investment expenditures could be attributed partly to lagged results of some 1986 developments: the fall in oil prices, declining interest rates, and exchange rate changes. The U.S. budget deficit, as well as the large external deficits and surpluses among major industrial countries, hindered further growth .2 A report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) indicates that the impact of the October stock market crash was short-lived because it hit economies that were growing strongly, anyway.3 The growth of output in the developing countries slowed in 1987; however, output declined in the fuel-exporting developing countries. These countries have been adversely affected by weakness in oil prices and the depreciation of the U.S. dollar. The weighted average of inflation rates in industrial countries--as measured by the [ ] GNP deflator, was 2.9% in 1987, down from 3.4% in 1986. Prices rose 3.0% in the United States, up from 2.6% the previous year. Inflation for 1988 is expected to remain slightly higher in the United States than in Japan and the Federal Republic of Germany because of recent exchange rates changes and the elimination of slack productive capacity and labor in the U.S. economy. The CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Best Practice Guidelines (MRMR Best Practice Guidelines) were prepared by the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum's (CIM) Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Committee (CIM MRMR Committee) to update an earlier version that was accepted by CIM Council on November 23, 2003 (CIM, 2003). These 2019 MRMR Best Practice Guidelines supersede and replace the November 23, 2003 version of the MRMR Guidelines. These 2019 MRMR Guidelines are not intended to be prescriptive and are not intended to provide detailed and exhaustive instructions for preparation of Mineral Resource and/or Mineral Reserve (MRMR) estimates. Rather, they are intended as general guidance to assist professional geoscientists (or equivalent) and engineers (or equivalent) in preparing high quality estimates of MRMR that incorporate sound geoscientific, engineering, evaluation and design practices. They are based on well-established estimation and mine planning principles and are designed to provide general guidelines of best professional practices employed in the preparation of MRMR estimates. Although the 2019 MRMR Best Practice Guidelines are intended for use by Canadian-based mining/exploration practitioners, many of the concepts and practices presented herein are in general agreement with current industry practices in jurisdictions with membership in the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO). For this document, persons preparing MRMR estimates are called Practitioners. Preparation of MRMR estimates should be carried out by Practitioners who either hold the status of Professional Geoscientist (or equivalent) or Professional Engineer (or equivalent), or who prepare the estimates under the supervision of a Professional Geoscientist (or equivalent) or Professional Engineer (or equivalent). For the purposes of this document, all references to reporting describe such necessary reports and related documentation that are created as part of the normal-course work flow of preparing MRMR estimates for internal purposes. For clarity, all public disclosure of MRMR estimates made by, or on behalf of, an issuer and intended to be, or reasonably likely to be, made available to the public in a jurisdiction of Canada must comply with the requirements of National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101), as amended from time to time. At least one Qualified Person (QP) must take responsibility for each part of the estimation process when publicly disclosing the results of MRMR estimates. The intended audience for these 2019 MRMR Best Practice Guidelines includes Practitioners at all levels of skill and experience, government agencies, academic institutions, and the public.

The Anglo Platinum Mogalakwena North concentrator was one of the first three hard rock mineral processing applications to utilise a HPGR circuit in preference to a SAG milling circuit. This was driven by the extreme competence of the ore that had given rise to throughput issues on the original South Plant. Despite more than adequate capacity and performance of the individual comminution units, the circuit has struggled to obtain full design capacity. A thorough review of the integrated performance of the circuit revealed a wide range of bottlenecks and underutilised parts of the circuit arising from design issues. Interestingly, the major opportunities lie in materials handling issues and mismatch of loads about the circuit. This paper presents the high-level outcomes and the associated opportunities, and is pertinent to all HPGR circuit designs.

This paper presents analysis of environmental effects induced by cautious blasting during the construction of the Istanbul Subway 4 Levent - Ayazaga Darulsafaka Metro Tunnel Project carried out by the contractor, located at Northern Istanbul in Turkey. Within the scope of the study, for the prediction of the peak particle velocity and to determine the slope of the attenuation curves together with the maximum charge per delay for the S6-7-8 shafts of this tunnel route, ground vibration components were measured carefully by using five vibration monitors during the construction of the tunnels which required blasting. The particle velocities and frequency values of all blast events are evaluated according to the United States Bureau of Mines (USBM) and German DIN 4150 Norms in order to predict, and compare the influence grades to the neighboring buildings, and structures. Also, data pairs of scaled distance and peak particle velocity obtained from 107 records belong to 51 shots were analyzed statistically. Empirical relationships with correlation at the 95 % confidence interval were established for these tunnel excavations and suggested for the test sites in order to estimate particle velocity of the ground vibrations. As a result of the studies, some practical charts are created in order to minimize the psychological effects of the shots, and simplify the authorities of shots’ job. And last but not least, make sure that the shots will be done in a controlled way.

The coal mining industry is now faced with new regulatory requirements that limit the discharge of chlorides into receiving streams. To meet these new regulatory standards for treated mine water, a zero liquid waste approach was developed using advanced treatment technologies. The approach described in this paper will generate clean water for reuse in various energy endeavours or discharge to the environment, with no substantial liquid or solid waste from the treatment process leaving the site.CITATION:Dal-Corobbo, A and Zick, R, 2013. Significant factors affecting airblast overpressure (AOP) emissions include charge mass per delay, distance from the blast site, burden, stemming height, and delay timing, topographic shielding, and meteorology. The effect of charge mass on the frequency of the airblast produced, and the delay timing required to control the level of airblast overpressure is explained by two case history examples which were not affected by topographical shielding and meteorology. One is a cast blast with a charge mass per hole of 1000 kg (2200 lb), and the other is a quarry blast with a charge mass per hole of 64 kg (141 lb), These examples show that the delay interval necessary to prevent an increase in AOP levels must be increased with an increase in charge mass per hole. The effect of a ‘soft-start’ technique where a reduction in AOP levels is achieved by decking only the initial front-row holes is also illustrated.

Longwall coal mines are frequently located in steep mountainous areas with narrow valleys. In order to protect surrounding watersheds and residential structures, support areas are left under the valleys. However, the indirect subsidence effects to the residential structures due to the potential topography effects can be a serious problem. The present study examines a longwall mine in southern West Virginia located in an area with an average slope of about 30°, or 58%, and with an overburden depth that varies from 49 to 376 m (160 to 1,235 ft). A comprehensive investigation was carried out to assess the subsidence and topography effects, as well as other ground control issues at this site. Surface and subsurface movements and deformation were predicted and their direct effects on nearby streams and structures were assessed. The potential and indirect subsidence influences of surface topography effects were assessed. The techniques and results of this investigation are presented in this paper. It shows that the direct and indirect subsidence effects on the streams and residential structures should be insignificant. The post-mining observations agreed well with this study.

Backfilling of mine voids is used to prevent or control the effects of subsidence on surface structures. The pumped-slurry, blind-backfilling process has been particularly successful for stabilizing ground over abandoned and inaccessible underground coal mines. Using this newer technology, vast quantities of backfill material can be distributed over wide areas in underground openings from a small number of injection boreholes. The rapid and successful development of this backfilling method, however, has outstripped technology for monitoring and controlling backfill placement. Surface or borehole remote sensing methods are needed to determine where fill material is being distributed underground and how effectively the material is packed in the voids. In search for improvements in backfill monitoring and control technology, potential remote geophysical sensing, process monitoring, and tracer methods were evaluated to select candidate systems for monitoring backfill placement under the constraints imposed by the injection process and the surface and subsurface conditions. ' A multiple objective ranking matrix, based on theoretical considerations as well as pragmatic experience with systems working in related or similar conditions, was used to narrow down potential methods to several most-favored candidates. Two of the candidates were field tested under actual operating conditions at a backfilling site in the Wilkes-Barre-Scranton region of northeastern Pennsylvania. Although process and acoustic emission monitoring indicated promise for improving existing backfill monitoring technology, more extensive testing under different conditions at various sites is required to establish the validity and utility of these methods. Results indicate that no single method is adequate in itself for backfill monitoring, and that a successful system will require the Integration of several methodologies.

The extractive phase of broad-scale mining can have major impacts on landscapes and associated ecosystems. Post-mining ecological rehabilitation typically starts with reconstructing topography. A fairly common industry practice has been to use landform elements such as plateaus, terraces, and gentle slopes for stabilisation purposes. However, this approach can lead to the generation of fairly uniform landforms that do not necessarily reflect natural ecosystems. Previous research in undisturbed and agricultural landscapes shows that ecological attributes and diversity in microclimates is positively correlated with landform heterogeneity. An objective of this study was to investigate if those findings are still valid in post-mining rehabilitating landscapes on North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia. We investigated the relationship between landform heterogeneity and status of ecological recovery. The landform heterogeneity is measured through variance in three landform characteristics (relief, slope, aspect) using remote-sensing data and the status of ecological recovery is represented by ecological indicators measured through field surveys. The results indicate strong correlations between landform heterogeneity indices and native vegetation species richness with sensitivity to the spatial scale of investigation. It is recognised that climate, substrate and rehabilitation practices act as primary drivers of rehabilitation success. However, the results indicate that, in some examples, landform heterogeneity (heterogeneity in relief and slope angles) contributes up to 30 to 50?per?cent of the variance in native vegetation species richness. While the primary drivers of ecological recovery are difficult to control over extensive areas and extended time periods, landform heterogeneity provides a tool to indirectly control the micro-environmental parameters to improve ecological recovery. Reducing the uncertainties in the choice of ecological and landform indices and the degree of landform heterogeneity suitable for particular rehabilitating landscapes would be site specific.
