The Mt Lyell Mine at Queenstown, Tasmania was re-opened in 1995 by Copper Mines of Tasmania Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mt Lyell Mining Co Ltd. The re-opening followed over 100 years of copper and gold mining at Mt Lyell. Major changes in practice were implemented across the site. Preventing further damage to an already disturbed environment was a major priority. Sublevel caving, at a lower cut-off grade, replaced open stoping for the deep underground mining. Development and later stoping are handled by a contractor, National Mine Management Pty Ltd, in the largest underground contract awarded at the time. Large scale sublevel caving was new to Mt Lyell and not widely practised in Australia, requiring studies and systematic development of the method, particularly in drilling and blasting. Rehabilitation and upgrading of mine infrastructure have been and will continue to be a challenge. The mine has, since 1995, returned to being a stable producer with potential for growth.

The estimation of TBM utilization rate can be problematic due to the uncertainty involved in the tunneling system reaction to various geology along the tunnel. Moreover, the impact of operational and management issues on TBM performance is unsettled. This includes the occurrence and duration of downtimes and the uniqueness of projects relative to the geology, machine type, backup system, site setup, crew experience, and operational restrictions imposed on the project by localities. The CSM2020 is a model based on discrete event simulation that predicts machine utilization for single or double shield TBM. This model was developed by the Earth Mechanics Institute (EMI) team, using the database of tunneling activities which was compiled based on field observation and measurements in pertinent projects. In the current study, CSM2020 was modified to simulate the workflow of slurry TBMs. The operating principle of slurry shield TBMs is different than open-mode TBMs. The model was verified by comparing results with a recently completed project in the United States. As a result, the model offers reliable utilization rate estimation in different types of TBM by implementing appropriate workflow.

"Abstract -The common style of gold mineralization in the Basal Reef and other auriferous conglomerates of the Witwatersrand Supergroup comprises clusters of gold grains occurring interstitially to quartz and pyrite pebbles as well as gold accumulations attached to the surface of and infilling hairline cracks and fractures in round, compact, detrital pyrite. The latter textural association is generally interpreted as a result of remobilization of originally detrital gold during regional metamorphism and related hydrothermal fluid circulation. There is general agreement that, although gold solubility was Iow, ore modification occurred during the metahydrothermal event, but uncertainty exists about the magnitude and scale of gold remobilization .Micro-textural and chemical investigation of compact round pyrite and associated gold accumulation has established that gold is preferentially deposited on chemically heterogeneous pyrite surfaces. Combinations of alternating high- and low-As zones in pyrite result in mixed np-type conductivity accompanied by electron exchange and the reduction-driven deposition of gold at the cathode. This mode] does not explain gold accumulations which are not immediately linked to chemical heterogeneities and it is inferred that an additional control on the deposition of gold was exerted by physical defects which lead to zones of increased charge density and/or areas of focussed conductivity. The inferred precipitation mechanisms suggest that submicrocopic physical and chemical controls are the important factors that determined the sites of gold nucleation and that precipitation mechanisms based on physicochemical changes of the hydrothermal system were not involved. The Basal Reef contains on average close to 5% of round, detrital, chemically zoned pyrite which provides a large number of electrochemically active pyrite surfaces. The extremely effective electrochemical precipitation mechanism together with the low solubility of gold in Witwatersrand fluids is the main reason for the spatially restricted remobilization of gold in the conglomerate reefs."

The Ambuklao and Binga Rehabilitation Project is a 175 MW hydro power project currently under construction across dual sites in the north region of Luzon Island, Philippines. When it was built in 1956, the Ambuklao Dam harnessed the second largest hydro-electric reservoir in Asia. However, due to landslide erosion and prolonged silt infiltration caused by an earthquake in 1990, the power plant has been rendered inoperable since 1999.To bring the power generating facility back to life, the project scope entails the rehabilitation and construction of civil structures, shafts and tunnels. A major component of these works is the decommissioning of a section of the seven metre diameter headrace tunnel by installing a concrete plug. The headrace tunnel is part of a closed waterway system that connects the dam via a shaft, exhibiting a hydrostatic pressure of 13 bar (1300 kPa) at the location of the new tunnel plug. In addition, the power station ball valves have seized ajar and the damaged intake riser is unsafe toaccess thereby requiring the plugging operation to be carried out under live flowing conditions.Working under hydrostatic pressure and live conditions, the headrace plug will be an underwater tremie pour operation that includes drilling and concrete injection through blow out preventer caissons installed in the floor of an underground chamber above the tunnel. The purpose of this paper is to describe the key engineering and planning components involved in this operation including pre- and post-grouting, chamber crane, sonar, local water compensation, jet flushing, drilling, caisson installation, and concrete design, production, delivery and placement. The success of this task rests on the strategic preparation and operational management of risk and safety in a challenging rural environment.

Since the early 1900s the geotechnical community has investigated every significant failure of a tailings dam, improved our knowledge of the behaviour of the tailings storage facilities, developed analysis methods, compiled lessons learned, and committed to zero failures. The rate of occurrence of tailings dam failures has reduced since the 1980s, however, failures continue to occur and continue to surprise us. At BHP, we have decided to take an approach to the tailings management that is similar to the approach to safety. We are looking at ways to eliminate, substitute, separate or engineer around the hazard (tailings dam failure). As such, our ultimate long term goal would be to eliminate the need for new tailings facilities. Unfortunately, we have not developed yet technologies for extracting many of the common metals and minerals without producing tailings. Our shorter term goal is to substitute the current conventional slurry tailings facilities with less risky dryer facilities. We are working with vendors and research organizations to develop technologies that can be efficiently applied on a large scale. At the same time, we are committed to using the best available engineering to reduce the risks associated with our existing and new conventional tailings facilities. The best engineering can be achieved by people with the appropriate education, experience, attention to detail, discipline and authority. We have implemented a system of governance to make sure, we have the best engineering applied to all our facilities, considering the specific conditions at each site.This paper presents the current tailings governance process at BHP, and the initiatives that were undertook towards achieving a zero failure goal. This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report summarizes a field demonstration of pneumatic backfilling technologies conducted at the abandoned Hillside Coal and Iron Slope in Vandling, P A. Researchers demonstrated two pneumatic backfilling technologies recently developed under the USBM's Abandoned Mine Reclamation Research Program, the Pneumatic Pipefeeder and the High-Efficiency Ejector. Both systems had previously been evaluated at the USBM's subsidence abatement investigation laboratory near Fairchance, P A. The objective of the demonstration was to fill 100% of the abandoned tunnel with backfill stone to prevent further subsidence. The Pneumatic Pipefeeder was used for 21 days, at a rate of 63 to 124 t/ d (69 to 136 st/d), to fill 88% of the tunnel. The High-Efficiency Ejector was used for 2 days, at a rate of 125 to 132 t/d (138 to 146 st/d) to fill the remaining 12% of the tunnel. The backfill placed by both systems was tightly compacted. The major problem encountered was wear on the polyethylene pipeline from the abrasion of the high-velocity backfill. The use of heavier steel pipe minimized the problem. A cost analysis for the entire project is given.

Large-scale infrastructure construction needs to comprehensively manage risks that can impact the health and well-being of many people, from workers (temporary, contracted or full time), to families and surrounding communities. This paper starts with an analysis of incidents (injury, fatality, other damage) in tunnel construction between 2000 and 2014 and assesses the distribution of these events by continent, year, and severity of outcomes. These incidents are then analysed and mapped to a framework of hazards derived from RISKGATE (2014). A comparative register of current tunnel construction risk management guidance is derived from current Australian codes of practice and this register is also mapped to the RISKGATE framework of hazards to identify where coal industry knowledge may offer utility to the tunnelling industry.An initiative of the Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP), RISKGATE is an interactive online risk management system developed to assist the mining industry in implementing continual improvement in the management of major unwanted events. To date, a comprehensive knowledge base has been captured for risk management of tyres, collisions, fires, isolation, strata underground, ground control open cut, explosions, explosives, outbursts, coal bumps and bursts, human/machine interface, manual tasks, slips/trips/falls, inrush and occupational hygiene. By capturing operational knowledge from industry experts, RISKGATE provides a cumulative corporate memory at a time of high personnel turnover in the coal industry.This paper proposes and outlines how knowledge within the RISKGATE platform could be applied to managing the significant health and safety risks associated with tunnelling. The authors suggest that to varying degrees the knowledge already captured in RISKGATE is likely to be transferable to tunnelling construction operations. The United States (US) coal mining industry has been working under comprehensive planning, operating and rehabilitation regulatory requirements for nearly 35 years. The public desire for environmental protection during mining and rehabilitation following mining to achieve post-mining land use and sustainability goals has been a major factor and continues to influence the process. Mining companies have evolved operations to achieve outcomes that address the desired goals and regulatory requirements cost-effectively and successfully. Over the 35 year regulatory period, requirements for more diverse topography, specialised revegetation communities, landform stability and assured sustainability have increased and become more complex. These challenges are effectively met by maximising integration of mine planning and operating with the rehabilitation process. Rehabilitation is then implemented in a more timely and efficient manner and with effective results that achieve desired outcomes, commonly with added value. Peabody Energy (Peabody) has taken this approach in its US operations and this paper discusses an integrated approach and illustrates learnings and results with examples from several of its western US operations.CITATION:Pfannenstiel, V, 2012. Flyrock remains a significant threat to the health and safety of mine employees and integrity of infrastructure, as well as to the safety of the neighbouring communities and their property. This investigation was motivated by the general lack of fundamental research and mathematically quantifiable data in the literature regarding the relationship between blast design parameters and their impact on flyrock. The focus was to develop a concept that can be used to mathematically quantify the trajectory of flyrock resulting from a blast, which can be used for future research. The ultimate goal for this technique, once it has been fully developed, is to: ➤ Enable mining operations to generate a database with accurate historical flyrock measurements resulting from their blasting operations ➤ Allow research teams to conduct scientific investigations into flyrock and the impact of various blast design parameters ➤ Generate point-cloud data to visualize blasts and flyrock in a virtual reality environment for training and education purposes. This paper summarizes a conceptual technique and preliminary fieldwork that was carried out to determine the technique’s feasibility and motivate further development. The results show conclusively that a modified photogrammetric technique is capable of capturing flyrock data for further processing and analysis. The data acquisition procedure can, at this point, be used to meet the first aim of the project, namely to gather a field database of historical flyrock generation. Further development of the technique is ongoing and it is envisioned that the scientific-based technique will provide a method whereby future flyrock studies will be comparable and that assumptions will be limited.

The removal of lead and other heavy metals present in an active US Army small arms firing range soil was evaluated in a pilot scale test program at Ft. Polk, Louisiana. Two different acid based extraction processes in conjunction with conventional physical separation methods were used. Physical separation processes consisting of screening and gravity operations removed most of the coarse lead particulates and slugs. Hydrochloric acid leaching followed by precipitation of lead as hydroxide recycled clean soil containing less than 500 mg/L. total lead and less than 5 mg/L TCLP lead. Lead extraction efficiency with hydrochloric acid was 96 percent. The results of lead removal by physical separation in conjunction with acetic acid leaching were not consistent over the whole test period and the total soil processed.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of fluorspar (CaF2) from 36 U.S. and 50 foreign mires and deposits in 13 countries. Only 6 U.S. properties are considered to be economic, as 29 domestic deposits were found to have an average total cost of production that was uneconomical at a breakeven (0-pct) discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR). The 50 foreign properties evaluated represent at least 55 pot of demonstrated fluorspar resources located in market economy countries and China. Al I evaluated foreign operations were found to be economic to marginally economic in January 1984 dollars when compared against published prices for each country. Reserves for 56 properties totaled 97 million metric tons (mt) (recoverable Ca F,) from demonstrated ore resources of 344 million mt that contained 123 million mt CaF2. The average total cost needed to cover all costs over the life of each operation was determined for all recoverable fluorspar products. Comparisons of ruining, beneficiation, and transportation costs per metric ton of fluorspar concentrate illustrate advantages between countries. Of the three countries with the greatest fluorspar production, China, with its high-grade, low-cost operations had the lowest weighted-average total cost of production ($38/mt concentrate), Mexico was next, at $54/mt concentrate, and benefited in U. S. dollar terms from the devaluation of the peso. The Republic of South Africa needed an average of $90/mt of concentrate to cover all costs of production at its large low-grade deposits.

"As governments increasingly accord high priority to sustainable energy, policymakers are finding that wind energy has a long track record as a proven alternative to conventional energy supply.Over the past two decades, wind turbine projects have been constructed offshore because of more stable offshore wind conditions and because there is more available space for large wind farms out in the open sea. Vindeby Wind Farm in southern Denmark was constructed in 1991. As the world’s first offshore wind farm, it provided valuable information and experience for researchers and designers that have led to new technologies and design improvements, a trend that will continue as more offshore wind farms are constructed. Today, the world’s capacity of the installed offshore wind turbines exceeds 1,000 MW. Most of these are installed in Northern Europe where there was early political support and favorable conditions, such as strong winds and relatively shallow waters. Offshore wind projects are now under development around the globe, including continental Europe, the U.K. and North America. ‘The largest offshore wind farm today is Denmark’s Nysted Offshore Wind Farm, which has a total capacity of approximately 480,000 MWh, equivalent to the yearly consumption of 120,000 households. It is five to six miles offshore in the Baltic Sea in the southern part of Denmark.The owner is a joint venture between DONG Energy of Denmark and E.ON Sweden. Bonus Energy (now Siemens) supplied the wind turbines, and P. Aarsleff A/S and subcontractors supplied the foundations. The contractor’s consultant, COWI A/S of Denmark, developed and designed the turbine foundations. With a total capacity of 165.6 MW, the project consists of 72 Bonus 2.3 MW turbines in water depths up to 33 ft. The turbines have a hub height of 226 ft, and the turbine blade diameter is 270 ft. The rotor and nacelle (the structure that houses the generator, gearbox and other equipment) weigh approximately 150 tons, and the weight of the steel tower is approximately 130 tons. The wind farm site is located in a relatively protected area of the Baltic Sea, but during the winter months, the water often freezes and the foundations needed to be constructed to resist ice forces. The founding soils at the site are overconsolidated clay tills with boulders and with a thin layer of softer surface sediments. Pockets of up to 30 ft of soft sediments were encountered, which required special foundation preparations."

The Cyprus Casa Grande Corporation has provided Bureau of Mines researchers with an opportunity to investigate the hydrology of leaching an in place copper ore deposit. Hydrologic investigations of underground in situ copper leaching are being jointly conducted under a cooperative agreement. The hydrologic concerns of leaching operations at the Casa Grande mine focus on maintaining adequate solution injection and recovery rates, and on distributing the injected leach solution effectively within the ore deposit. Hydrologic considerations underlying these concerns relate to the permeability of the oxide ore zone during leaching, the unsaturated condition of the deposit prior to leaching, and the constraints imposed on in situ hydrologic design by the underground mine setting. The investigation involves monitoring of flow and pressure conditions in 58 injection and recovery wells, estimating permeability conditions using a hydrologic model, and on-site testing of hydrodilation and airlift pumping. Transient, fracture-controlled permeability is determined to be the dominant hydrologic consideration. A statistical modeling procedure has been developed for estimating changes in permeability during leaching. Flexibility in well design and operation is essential for accommodating the changes in fracture permeability that occur during leaching.

The objective of this program was to develop a system to extinguish coal mine fires by remote sealing of the underground passageways. The system developed had to be versatile enough to function under a wide range of operating conditions, including large variations in passageway geometry, depth of mine, water conditions, both in the mine and at the surface, and rubble in the mine passage. The system developed had to include instrumentation for the remote probing of the passageway prior to sealing, a system for sealing the mine passages, and instrumentation for remote monitoring of the quality of the seal during and after construction. These objectives were successfully achieved during this program. The remote mine sealing capability of the system was satisfactorily demonstrated in a field test conducted at the Eastern Associated Coal Corporation Federal No, 1 Mine in Grant Town, West Virginia.

"Due to the way drilled deep foundations are being constructed, their structural integrity and geotechnical capacity are highly variable. Drop weight systems are increasingly being used to dynamically test the capacity and integrity of drilled deep foundations. Conventional pile driving hammers are often either inadequate or not economical to test these foundations and drop weight systems have therefore been developed to allow for dynamic testing.The advantages of the tests include high mobility, short testing time, low cost relative to static load tests (allowing multiple tests at a single site), and integrity/construction quality evaluation concurrent with capacity determination. The dynamic testing method for drilled deep foundations encounter several difficulties including: the need for a pre-testing analysis for matching pile, soil and testing system, adequate mass and drop height to reflect the mobilized capacity without structural damage, test interpretations for irregularly shaped and/or non-uniform piles, need for reliable dynamic measurements depending on the impact and the distance between the impact and the measuring point, and limited knowledge about the accuracy of the predictions.The principles of the tests are presented using simplified models and demonstrated via a case history. Drop weight systems are reviewed. Dynamic measurement principles are explained and the construction and testing quality effects are outlined and demonstrated via numerical modeling and case histories. A comparison of dynamic and static tests is presented via a database, case histories and finally a short review of relevant codes is provided.1 IntroductionTraditional static axial load test is performed by a slow application of a force produced against independent reaction, imitating structural loading. It is the most reliable method to determine the pile’s performance as commonly required under typical service conditions. The major limitations of this testing are: (i) high cost associated with set-up, test duration, interpretation and construction delays, and (ii) inability to obtain information about the pile-soil interaction along the pile without additional testing means (e.g. tell tales, strain gauges, etc.). These limitations are acute when high capacity foundations are involved."

Modern coal cleaning technologies have allowed coal preparation facilities to become quite efficient at removing sulfur compounds, waste rock and low grade coals from run of mine coal. Up to 50% of the raw mined coal stream may end up as refuse, particularly when the coal originates from longwall mining operations, or is high in partings, rock and impurities. The refuse materials vary from coarse materials removed by physical screening to very fine materials removed by floatation and density separation processes. Coal refuse piles are also known by a variety of other names including "waste dumps", "gob piles" and "slate dumps". The potential hazards of improperly reclaimed refuse include contamination of surface and groundwaters by acidic leachates and runoff, erosion and sedimentation into nearby watersheds, spontaneous combustion, disturbance of topsoil borrow areas, and damage from landslides should large slope failures occur. Many of these problems have been particularly acute for abandoned refuse piles, and modern regulations attempt to minimize the environmental impact of coal refuse disposal operations.

"Mica Dam, owned by British Columbia Hydro, is an 820 ft high earthfill embankment dam that was completed in 1973. The dam consists of a thin central impervious till core supported by upstream and downstream compacted sand, gravel and cobble shell zones, founded on bedrock and valley bottom alluvium deposits. In 2012, a project was started to install new piezometric instrumentation within the dam’s foundation and downstream shell zone.Deep drilling in large embankment dams is very difficult and requires careful planning to select a methodology capable of reaching the target locations, while ensuring that no damage is done to the surrounding dam fill zones. At Mica Dam, the drilling could only be carried out from the Dam Crest and drillholes had to be carefully oriented to avoid intersecting any existing dam instrumentation. The drilling work therefore required angled drillholes, at depths of up to 855 ft, through heavily compacted sands, gravels and cobbles, and to significant depths below the standing water table.During the planning stages for the Project, in early 2013, the preferred drilling method was selected and a drilling contractor was engaged for the drilling work. Critical dam safety concerns were identified and addressed during the design stage of the Project with the drilling contractor, so that risk mitigation measures and response plans could be effectively developed.This paper explains how background information and prior drilling experience influenced the final design and implementation of the drilling techniques used in 2013 to successfully drill the deep holes and carry out the piezometer installations in Mica Dam. Drilling procedures, instrumentation design and installation methods, as well as risk mitigation measures, are discussed."

The importance of brown coal as a raw material is currently given by growing energy needs of Czech Republic. More than 70% of mined brown coal comes from North Bohemian Basin these days. Mining of brown coal is run in four mining locations. They are geologically different and the parameters of mining coal are quite different too. This requires a little bit different methodology of both extraction and reclamation. Methods of reclamation works in the region are given mainly by the characteristics of overburden rocks appearing in the upper horizon of recuperated localities. The difficulties of the North Bohemian mine dumps reclamation works are caused by extremely unfavourable properties of rocks poured down to the majority of mine dumps. These are mainly rocks of the overlaying strata and the rocks strata of brown coal bed. Main materials poured down to the mine dumps are sands, clayey sands and kaolin ? illitic clays. Admixtures in filled rocks consist of organic (coal) mass, siderite and pyrite. These rocks are mechanically instable with respect to the wind and water erosion and during weathering they are getting unfavourable, acid (phytotoxic) nature, due to the influence of SO3 and Al ions. External and internal dumps of open pit mines are significant part of the North ? Bohemian landscape sustained by excavation. Their as fast as possible preparation and gradual integration into ecosystem of the area is interest of both citizens of region and mining companies. The paper briefly summarizes the methodology of restoration of the largest dumps of the North Bohemian Brown Coal Basin and the results of analyses and evaluation of samples taken on restored localities Rado-vesice dump, Strimice dump, Ru?odol dum pand internal dump of Bilina mine. An example of modern non-tradicional restoration methods is the restoration of internal dump of Bilina mine (application of power plant stabilizer). According to observations and results of sample analyses the methods of restoration were selected to limit the erosion influence, adjust the chemical and physical composition of surface of Radovesice and Strimice dumps. The application of marlites and bentonite prevent the unfavourable weathering processes on dump surface. Compensation of Quaternary sediments was artifically formed here. The need of marlite ploughing in, application of organical substrates and vegetation preparation was proved on Radovesice dump. The conception of landscape reclamation of the largest dumps after finishing of mining, methodology of technical reclamation and well considered using of fertilizable soils are main results presented in this article.
