P&H MinePro Services Canada is supplying Syncrude Canada three more of its model4100BOSS electric mining shovels. The shovels will be delivered during 2003. Syncrude’s oil sands operations already use five P&H shovels. The first 4100BOSS shovel was commissioned at Syncrude’s operation in northern Alberta, Canada in October 2001. The unit loads more than 9 kt/hr (10,000 stph) of unblasted oil sands. Since it began operation, the 4100BOSS has shown a 28% production increase over the four P&H 4100TS shovels also on site.

Rockfall hazards are ubiquitous in mining environments making their control critical for safe mining operations. The complex processes involved in rockfall events necessitate a probabilistic modeling approach with well-calibrated material properties. The controls designed to mitigate rockfall hazards need to be reliable, efficient, and safe to deploy to meet the constraints present at an active mine. This paper presents an innovative solution to rockfall at Rio Tinto’s Bingham Canyon Mine. The solution incorporates the site-specific calibration and creation of a predictive rockfall model with the design, field testing, implementation, and monitoring of the rockfall controls.

The integrity of shale gas wells in longwall chain pillars under the influence of longwall mining is a safety concern for both coal and gas operators. Previous modeling studies of gas wells in longwall pillars have shown that a FLAC3D model can predict longwall-induced stresses and deformations in gas well casings with reasonable accuracy. The predicted casing deformations can be verified by multi-finger caliper survey. This study concerns the influence of longwall mining on eight shale gas wells in a shale gas well pad located in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels under 1,030 feet of cover. FLAC3D modeling was performed to predict longwall-induced deformations in gas well casings based on site-specific mining and geological conditions. Small deformations less than 0.5 in were predicted in the intermediate casing above 600 ft depth, and very small casing deformations less than 0.15 in were predicted below 600 ft due to high abutment pressure and high frictional resistance along the weak bedding interfaces. After the first panel was mined, a 56-arm caliper survey was performed on one of the wells to measure the longwall-induced casing deformations in the intermediate casing. The predicted casing deformations were then compared with the measured deformations, which indicated that the prediction was generally in good agreement with the measurement in terms of deformation locations and magnitudes. Findings from this study provide valuable information not only for stability assessment of shale gas wells in longwall chain pillars but also for developing engineering guidelines to preserve casing integrity through adequate pillar and casing design.

"The LaRonde mill was commissioned in 1988 and began treating ore from the Penna shaft in 2000. The mill has been expanded to accommodate 7,500 t/day, but ramped down to 6,000 t/day since the deep extension began. The process recovers gold, silver, and base metals. In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking gold-pyrite concentrate to a treatment plant feeding pulp to the LaRonde mill, increasing gold output by 40,000 oz. In 2009, the high-grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the LaRonde plant, increasing gold output by 120,000 oz. This paper outlines the metallurgical considerations related to the treatment of different ore types.RÉSUMÉ Le concentrateur de la mine LaRonde a été mis en service en 1988 et a commencé à traiter le minerai du puits Penna en 2000. La capacité du concentrateur a augmenté afin de permettre le traitement de 7 500 tonnes de minerai par jour, capacité qui est retombée à 6 000 tonnes par jour (tpj) depuis le début de l’extension en profondeur de la mine. Ce procédé permet de récupérer de l’or, de l’argent et des métaux communs. En 2008, l’usine de traitement Goldex a commencé à transporter par camion du concentré de pyrite et d’or vers une usine de traitement alimentant en pulpe le concentrateur de LaRonde, augmentant ainsi la production d’or de 40 000 onces. En 2009, les installations de traitement du minerai à haute teneur de Lapa ont été annexées à l’usine de traitement de LaRonde, augmentant la production d’or de 120 000 onces. Cet article passe en revue les considérations métallurgiques liées au traitement de différents types de minerai.INTRODUCTIONThe LaRonde metallurgical plant in the Abitibi region of Quebec, Canada, evolved into a mature milling site following expansions in 2000–2003, thanks to improved processes, manpower, and water treatment capabilities that better accommodate the complex constituents of the LaRonde ore. The ore requires a sequence of grinding, copper- lead and zinc flotation, and precious metals leaching, ending with a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery. A portion (35%) of the tailings is sent back underground as paste backfill after being treated with the SO2-air cyanide destruction process. The tailings area has a dedicated cyanide destruction and metal precipitation area through which the used water passes before returning as recycled water. A biological water treatment plant was built in 2004 to address water toxicity in the final effluent. The water toxicity was the result of the high sulfide content of the LaRonde ore (from thiocyanate or stable cyanide species buildup) and the use of 90% recirculated water in the mill. The water treatment plant uses bacteria to transform thiocyanate into nitrates and precipitate phosphorus from the water before it is discharged into the environment."

To develop strategic and tactical strategies to manage seismic hazard in a safe and economic manner, it is necessary to understand the spatial and temporal distribution of mine wide seismogenic behavior. Global mine-scale numerical stress modelling provides a means to forward predict seismic susceptibility thereby facilitating informed decision making for the development and implementation of strategic and tactical risk mitigation measures. To make forward predictions of hazard susceptibility using global stress models with reasonable confidence, it is necessary to rigorously calibrate numerical stress models to the observed history of ground reaction. This paper demonstrates quantifiable methods for calibrating numerical models and developing probabilistic prediction criterion using seismic data. The appropriate applications of model inputs (including boundary conditions, constitutive models and material parameterization) specific to global mine-scale modelling are also discussed. Lastly, this paper demonstrates how the calibration process adds value not only to informed decision making, but also to the improved understanding of site geomechanical conditions; including enhanced identification of geotechnical domains and mechanical indicators required for seismic mechanism domaining.

"Access to information is a key component for making improvements to any process. This is particularly true for all aspects of the iron mining and steelmaking process. The ability to make rapid control decisions can significantly influence process outcomes, including ensuring product specification, mining quality, transportation limits, upgrade factors, waste bypass and direct shipping, among many others. While traditional laboratory methods provide feedback for such processes, having access to analysis results in real-time can lead to positive reactive and predictive control decisions to be made rapidly, leading to significant improvements throughout the process. Scantech has been designing, manufacturing and supplying technological products to the minerals industry since 2002 to enable the availability of such real-time information to a mine or plant, with the benefits being enjoyed by a wide range of operators. This paper provides a summary of the available technologies used in the iron ore and steel industries, as well as providing case studies of their use in African and Australian iron ore and European steel, as well as a description of the potential benefits of a range of analysis equipment.INTRODUCTION Access to information is critical for any process, and is a fundamental component for making process control decisions. In order to yield effective processing outcomes, it is important for that information to be readily available, preferably as quickly as possible, and to be as accurate as possible. While speed and accuracy are often traded off against each other, there are numerous technologies available in a processing environment that allow for both rapid flow of information and a high level of accuracy. The use of on-belt analysis equipment has a long trusted history of use in a number of mining and processing environments and industries, providing information such as elemental composition and grade of conveyed materials, moisture content, waste proportion and energy information. Australian company Scantech has been a provider of such equipment since 1981, and has become an industry leader in both the supply and development of on-belt analysers across a range of industries."

The Piney Branch CSO 049 Storage Tunnel (PBST) will be the last major project for the DC Clean Rivers Program. The project includes construction of a 2,200-foot-long, 18-foot-internal-diameter storage tunnel; two connections to combined sewer infrastructure; and two shafts. Major challenges include excavation underneath an existing live outfall that must remain in service; excavation of the tunnel through several areas of low rock cover and mixed-face conditions; and negotiations with a variety of federal, regional, and local stakeholders to address project impacts. This paper describes the overall project scope; geotechnical conditions along the alignment; design and construction challenges; and construction procurement.

Over the last 20 years, the manufacturing sector of our country has been called upon to comply with ever core stringent environmental standards. The primary metals sector was particularly hard hit early on, to develop the technology, acquire the equipment, and implement the programs to eliminate or reduce the by-products of metal making. To this end, through a combination of technological innovation and extensive capital expenditures, the metals industry has met, and in many cases, exceeded the minimum standards. It is to this escalating cost - liability exposure issue - that Dereco has addressed itself. As we move into the decade of the 90's, the challenge facing the metals industry concerning the environment will be even more difficult than the previous decade. To focus in on one major aspect of legislated environmental regulations, the issue we will address today is; now that the by-products of metal production have been identified, accounted for and collected, how are they to be disposed of? Danieli Linz Technology has been honored at 4.1.2013 with the first contract for the exchange of a 350 t BOF converter for ArcelorMittal Poland Dabrowa Gornicza on a turnkey basis. This paper describes the new design features of this converter based on the development of a new Danieli converter suspension system. The issue was to install a new converter (incl. trunnion ring, suspension system and bearings) with maximum volume but keeping most of the existing equipment unchanged. So, the big tilting drives on both sides had to be reused and the existing foundation, pedestals as well as the bearing distance had to be maintained. Further on the welded coreequipment (vessel shell, trunnion ring, pedestals, slag shields, etc.) was manufactured in-house within the pressure vessel division of Danieli Thailand. Due to the huge dimensions of these parts the delivery had to take place in parts which had to be welded together on site under full production conditions of the steel plant. But also the erection had to be applied under this condition. Additionally the main support bearings, parts of the screening (doghouse) as well as an upgrade of the existing relining machine had to be delivered.

A gold mine in southern China has transitioned from an open pit operation to a fully underground mine. An overhand mining method is used which requires the mined stopes to be filled with backfill having an unconfined compressive strength of at least 0.35MPa. Tailings from the process plant is deposited into separate flotation and Carbon in Leach (CIL) tailings storage facilities. The tailings has a high fines content and the thickener on site could only produce a dilute flotation tailings at a solids content of about 30 wt%. This resulted in two undesirable outcomes: the density of flotation tailings in the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) was significantly lower than planned so that the TSF could not store the life of mine tailings and that the backfill product had to include a high percentage of manufactured aggregate and increased cement content to achieve the required strength. This paper presents results of a tailings study which identified that the flotation TSF would be capable of storing the remaining life of mine tailings if an amended backfill product made up of 100% of flotation tailings could be introduced. A 100% tailings backfill with the addition of 8% cement was developed by classifying the tailings and using the coarser fraction in the backfill. This backfill allowed 60% of the flotation tailings to be placed underground and only the remaining 40% in the flotation TSF. A new thickener was designed and installed to thicken the tailings and rheological testing of the tailings, using a closed loop pilot plant, provided parameters to upgrade the underground reticulation system to deliver cemented backfill to stopes throughout the mine and to deliver thickened tailings to the TSF. Installation of a new scalping station with bunker, apron feeder, scalping screen, ramp -retaining wall and approach bridge was planned in an existing integrated complex of phosphate fertilizer at a remote place in West Africa. Rock phosphate ROM, transported from mines by a combination of 100 Ton and 150 Ton dumper, would be fed to a steel bunker having capacity of 180 m3. Different options were studied for retaining wall at the junction of ramp and approach bridge. Initially options with conventional RCC Retaining Wall, Gravity Retaining Wall with Precast Concrete Blocks and Reinforced Earth walls were studied. Option with Reinforced Earth was selected as this option was much more cost effective compared to other options. But real engineering challenges cropped up when competent execution contractors were not available nearby the site. To minimize the cost, an innovative option with Stepped Retaining wall was then studied. Geotechnical parameters of native soils, selected for the construction of the approach ramp were determined and it was found that with available poor geotechnical parameters of the native soils, design of stepped retaining wall would not be feasible with respect to available bearing capacity, subjected dead load, live load, operational load and earth pressure. A conscious effort was then made to make the design feasible by improving the geotechnical parameters of the retained earth of ramp near the retaining wall. In view of that, mix design with locally available materials like Silexite, Sand, Laterite, Gravel and Silt at different proportions was made and samples were tested in the laboratory to determine relevant geotechnical parameters. Based on the test results, a suitable mix was selected that had high shear strength, enhanced bearing capacity and improved coefficient of earth pressures. Design of stepped retaining wall was then made with the selected construction materials and construction completed. The plant was successfully commissioned in December. 2021.

The results of a detailed acid rock drainage (ARD) prediction program were used to revise the waste rock segregation criteria at the Restigouche open pit mine. Waste rock at the site was predominately derived from altered volcanic rocks that hosted a massive sulfide lead/zinc orebody. The program assessed the five years of drainage chemistry from both the potentially acid generating and the non-acid generating waste rock storage facilities in addition to laboratory-based kinetic test results. Material-specific leaching characteristics including relative metal-release rates and neutralisation potential depletion rates were determined from 12 laboratory-based kinetic tests. Solid-phase analyses indicated that, although pyrite was typically the most abundant sulfide mineral in the waste rock, its abundance varied significantly as documented by total sulfur contents ranging from 4.0 per cent. Kinetic test results were used to establish revised waste rock segregation criteria based on total sulfur content and neutralisation potential. The revised criteria maintain that waste material with a total sulfur content 4.0 per cent as potentially acid generating. When present in sufficient quantities, ankerite provided an effective source of neutralisation potential for the range of observed sulfide oxidation rates. Kinetic testing documented that up to 6 kg CaCO3/t was ineffective at neutralising acidity in samples that contained >4 per cent S. The carbonate molar ratio measured from the humidity cells was adjusted to reflect the stoichiometry of the ankerite and applied as an NP/AP criteria for waste rock containing 0.1 <S per cent <4.0.

Mine exploitation is a broad subject whose focus is the technical skills or efforts needed for the extraction of mineral from a known ore body. Mine exploitation can be considered the very core of the mining engineering discipline. It begins at the conclusion of the exploration and development stages of mining and ends when the ore body is exhausted and the mine (or mines)closes and is reclaimed. Section 8 on mine exploitation is comprised of seven chapters: (1) classification of mining methods, (2) mine surveying and mapping, 3) systems engineering, (4) computer methods, (5) labor relations and training, (6) management and administration, and (7) mine closure, sealing, and abandonment. Each chapter focuses its efforts towards providing detailed and useful information for the engineer on basic mine exploitation principles. The information can be applied to a broad range of mining problems without regard to mineral type or mining method.

Incorporated in 1957 under the laws of the Province of Quebec, Quebec Cartier Mining Co. undertook the development of its low-grade iron ore reserves located at Lac Jeannine in the southwest extremity of the Quebec-Labrador trough. This challenge comprised the construction of a 200-mile access road, two towns, a 191-mile-long railroad from Port Cartier to Lac Jeannine, a hydro-electric generating plant on the Hart Jaune River, and mining, crushing, concentrating and ancillary facilities to support a yearly production of 8.0 million tons of iron ore concentrates at 66% Fe. In order to meet increasing market demands for iron ore concentrates concurrently with the depletion of its Lac Jeannine reserves , Quebec Cartier announced, late in 1969, the first step toward bringing into production a new iron ore deposit, known as Mount Wright, located 70 air miles northeast of Lac Jeannine and 25 miles southwest of Labrador City, Newfoundland. In September 1970, the company announced its decision to develop and bring into production its Mount Wright reserves at an annual rate of 1 8.4 million dry long tons. The scope of this project included the construction of an access road linking the mine, the new town and Labrador City, Newfoundland, the extension of the railroad by some 86 miles, the construction of an ore concentrating plant with all the ancillary facilities, the development: of the mine, the construction of a pourer transmission line and a new town adjacent to Lake Daviault. The Mount Wright story is divided into five individual papers covering: (a) the history and development of the project; (b) the mine; (c) plant control by a process computer; (d) crushing, grinding and concentrating; and (e) the townsite of Fermont.

As an industry with major potential impacts (both good and bad) on water resources and due to the rising costs of process water, the mining and metallurgical processing industry has a key responsibility to contribute to the overall goal of preserving both the quantity and quality of water available within the watersheds they operate in. As we plan for new and existing mining and metallurgical projects, we need to consider a hierarchy of options to minimize our impact within the watersheds we operate; keeping clean water clean by diverting around our operations; reduction in the amount of water we use; reuse of water wherever possible, and improvements to water quality for recycling and/or release to environment. Technology is needed to treat water to improve its quality for reuse or release to the original watershed. While lime precipitation followed by sulfide polishing is effective for removal of most of the metals, it does little or nothing to remove ammonium ions and anions such as chloride, nitrate, molybdate, arsenate and selenite/selenite. Regulations on sulfate limits in treated discharge water has drawn close attention to the treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD). Management of brine and salt disposal is also posing a problem due to strict regulations and cost of disposal. This paper will: (a) address issues associated with managing water with the objective of maintaining water sheds—status quo-during and after operation (b) discuss potential technologies for advanced water treatment plants.

Luscar Stereo commenced construction of the mine at Coal Valley, Alberta, in August, 1976. It is designed to produce approximately 2.5 million clean short tons of steam coal annually - 2.0 million tons per year being committed to Ontario Hydro and 0.5 million tons per year being committed to Neptune Terminals for sale on the export market. The project involves constructing a heavy-media coal preparation plant, erecting a 42-cubic-yard dragline, constructing a shop/office complex, and developing three surface mining zones and associated facilities. As there were no existing facilities in the Coal Valley area, it was necessary to establish access roads, an airstrip, temporary utilities, fuel supplies, a construction camp, rail upgrading and communication services.

Large metallurgical complexes are substantial users of energy, water and assets. To improve the effectiveness of energy and assets the quality of the data and events become paramount for real-time operational management. A lack of resources at the local operations and at the enterprise makes it impossible to process the sea of information and many projects have failed. As such, a novel approach for implementation of continuous improvements at the local level and innovations at the strategic level was implemented at all operating plants at Anglo American Platinum. Sixteen concentrators, three smelters and two refinery process systems were integrated to scale the information for manufacturing services at the local and enterprise level. The new capability of an enterprise real-time monitoring and diagnosis software infrastructure was available to implement many business strategies in tandem. Mineral and metallurgical processing knowledge is used to simplify the implementation of the data model. As such, asset monitoring, energy, production and process control management were implemented in an integrated approach reusing the same data but with different context and time horizons to have a standard methodology for local root cause analysis. This paper will highlight a sustainability management approach to change and empower the local and strategic team to collaborate using a new approach for adaptive reporting and condition-based event management and notifications. The results based on the integrated and collaborative team efforts will be presented. The completion of the $1.1 B Cape Lambert Upgrade project is the second ‘pillar’ in Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s expansion program that has enabled Rio Tinto Iron Ore to effectively double iron ore shipping capacity from the Pilbara between 2003 and 2009 to 220 million tonnes per annum (Mt/a), following the successful completion of the Dampier Port upgrade project two years earlier.The Cape Lambert Upgrade has built on and enhanced many of the engineering achievements of the Dampier Port upgrade project, as well as developing innovative and unique engineering solutions for this complex ‘brownfields’ project that presented its own challenges, particularly in this distinctive open-water port environment.The project was implemented in two phases to achieve an increase in port shipping capacity from 55 to 80 Mt/a – an enhancement phase and an expansion phase.The initial enhancement phase, which provided an increase to shipping capacity from 55 to 60 Mt/a, focused on increasing the utilisation and effi ciency of existing plant and equipment with a relatively small capital expenditure.The expansion phase, which provided the increase in shipping capacity to 80 Mt/a, included extending the existing iron ore wharf by 256 m to create four shipping berths, a new shiploader, an expanded stockyard (including a new fourth bucket wheel reclaimer) and a new surge bin facility to maximise outloading tonnage rates.The Cape Lambert Upgrade project was implemented whilst the port remained fully operational and continued to ship record tonnages of iron ore throughout the project duration. This achievement required signifi cant upfront planning and sequencing of construction activities to support the operation of the port. Innovative design and construction techniques were used to mitigate the impact and enable construction activities in and around the operating plant.Throughout the project, new benchmarks in engineering design and construction practices were established, which have since been adopted for new iron ore port facilities currently in planning phases.
