Representatives from several mining operations in three western states left their mines behind for a day in February to discuss with their peers the issue of water. The event was Knight Piésold and Co.’s Roundtable 2007, held in Elko, NV. It was third such event put on by the company. The issue this year was site-wide water considerations.

An important part of planning for the rehabilitation of uranium mine sites is the ability to assess the geomorphic stability of the final landform, over time frames ranging from decades to millenia. Depending on the environmental conditions, erosion features such as gullies may incise into containment structures, potentially leading to the exposure and transport of encapsulated radioactive material. Further, erosion may lead to increased sediment loads and the transport of other mine-related contaminants off-site and into downstream waterways. While erosion may be monitored and assessed over the short term (years to decades), the longer-term behaviour (centuries to millennia) of such landscapes is not within any meaningful human management time frame. Landscape evolution models (LEMs) can provide information on soil erosion rates at decadal or centennial scales over large spatial scales, and evaluate the sensitivity of these processes to environmental changes. However, an important issue associated with the use of models is the ability to assess the reliability and accuracy of the model. In this paper, the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM is tested for its ability to predict soil erosion from a series of 30 m × 30 m experimental plots specifically constructed for this purpose on a trial rehabilitated landform at the Ranger Uranium Mine in the Northern Territory, Australia. Model predictions of bedload and suspended sediment loads from the erosion plots were compared with field measured observations collected over four wet seasons from the trial landform. Once calibrated for the specific site hydrological conditions, the predicted sediment yield – specifically, bedload – demonstrated an excellent correspondence with the field data. However, longer-term simulations of ten years identified an exhaustion effect in sediment yield from the landform. These latter results indicate that a weathering function needs to be incorporated into CAESAR-Lisflood to ensure confidence that the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM will be able to correctly predict the long-term evolution of a rehabilitated landform once it has been?constructed.CITATION:Lowry, J,?Saynor, M,?Erskine, W, Coulthard, T and Hancock, G, 2014. "Ground deformation and support response was monitored in a longwall gateroad as part of a research project into gateroad stability under changing loading conditions. In this study, instrumentation was installed in a gateroad located between two active longwall panels. The first panel to pass was the second panel in the district, and the second panel to pass the instrumentation sites was the third panel in the district. All of the panels in the district were right-handed. All of the instrumentation was installed in the number one entry, the tailgate, the second panel to pass the instrumentation sites at a mid-pillar location, and at an outby intersection location under about 600 feet of cover. The instrumentation included roof extensometers, cable bolt load cells, hollow inclusion cells, borehole pressure cells, standing support load cells, and convergence sensors, and a multipoint borehole extensometer. The roof extensometers measured roof convergence and sag. The cable bolt load cells measured the roof load applied to the cable bolts in the secondary support array. Hollow inclusion cells measured the magnitude and direction of the principal and shear stresses. The borehole pressure cells measured the stress on a pillar in the entry nearest to the second panel to pass the instrument site. The instrumented wood cribs in the entry nearest the second panel recorded the closure and load on the cribs, and the multipoint borehole extensometer in a pillar closest to the second panel recorded the location and width of cracks that occurred and total expansion of the pillar. This paper describes the effects of the changing stress caused by the first panel as it approached and passed the locations of the instruments on the opposite side of the gateroad system and the later effect caused by the second panel as it approached and passed the mid-pillar instrument location. The first panel passing caused significant loading at the mid-pillar instrument location, but not at the intersection location, while the second panel had passed the mid-pillar location and just arrived at the intersection location when the dataloggers needed to be removed."

With the world’s growing demand for metals, seafloor massive sulfides (SMS) deposits are now seen as a possible mineral resource that could contributes to secure metal supply for human needs. SMS deposits are characterized by high concentrations of base metals and at some place high contents of precious and rare metals. Since 1977 and the discovery of the first high temperature (HT) hydrothermal vent and its sulfide mineralization and high biodiversity, more than 300 sites are known today. If the exploration strategy for detection of active hydrothermal sites is now robust, their associated mineralization will not (and must not) constitute a potential target for deep-sea mining due to environmental concerns and technical limitations. Recent studies on SMS deposits are rather focused on extinct and buried mineralized sites characterized by a lower biomass. Several geophysical techniques to explore and detect extinct SMS (eSMS) and buried SMS (bSMS) have been developed (e.g. Kawada and Kasaya, 2017; Szitkar et al., 2017, 2014) using different approaches (e.g. regional or local scale; ship-based or using underwater vehicles) with several degrees of success or limitation. Here we present results from acoustic surveys performed on the TAG hydrothermal district during the BICOSE (2014) and LEVE-SMF (2016) cruises and direct observation provided by HOV (Nautile) dives carried out during HERMINE cruise (2017). Acoustic data were acquired using two different multibeam echosounders (MBES): the hull-mounted Kongsberg EM122 (12 kHz, R/V L’Atalante) and the ROV-mounted RESON SeaBat 7125 (400 kHz, ROV Victor) (Figure 1). After processing, acoustic seafloor backscatter data from both MBES provides complementary qualitative results in relation to the seafloor composition. The analysis of the seafloor backscatter data obtained by near-seafloor surveys with the high-resolution 400 kHz MBES shows a clear relationship between low backscatter strength values and areas covered with pelagic and hydrothermal sediments whereas high backscatter strength values are associated to pillow lavas and basaltic scree. Intermediate backscatter strength values are rather related to old and younger eSMS as well as to mineralization on TAG active mound.

"This technical paper was prepared to describe the general process by which the authors designed a column-supported load transfer platform (LTP) for support of asphalt-paved runway and taxiway embankment areas over soft organic soils, the major tasks and observations made during construction of the system, and the outcome of the system design and construction. The LTP system was designed using the method described in the BSI Standards Publication Code of Practice for Strengthened/Reinforced Soils and Other Fills, BS 8006-1:2010 (BS8006), to achieve performance objectives for the project. The design also used other criteria based upon the authors’ engineering experience and understanding of the expected interaction between soils, structures and geotextiles. The design and construction process described herein resulted in a successful project. The authors identified that full-time engineering oversight during construction was of high importance and provided a high degree of value to the project. The authors’ intimate knowledge of the potentially adverse effects of variations in construction practices promoted timely identification of construction deficiencies that could have affected the reliability of the system. This resulted in corrections and modifications being made, while materials were still accessible, to protect the intended performance of the finished system.INTRODUCTIONThe site is located in Marshfield, Massachusetts. The surrounding area is flat and contains significant wetlands with a water table at or near the ground surface. Prior to the improvements described herein, the site was already developed as an existing municipal airport with an approximately 3,000 linear-feet asphalt-paved runway oriented in a northeast/southwest direction (northeast end referred to as Runway 24 and southwest end referred to as Runway 6; Fig. 1). The site is located approximately 0.5 to 1 mile (Runway 24 and Runway 6, respectively) from the Atlantic Ocean.The improvement project included total extension of approximately 550 linear feet of asphalt-paved runways and taxiways over existing wetlands that consisted of soft, organic soils with varying but significant depths (Fig. 2). An initial geotechnical assessment performed for the project identified that the subsurface conditions were not suitable to support the proposed runways and taxiways in their existing state."

INTRODUCTION In 2010, Montana Tech was gifted 65 acres of land immediately west of the campus. The parcel of land included an old silver mine called the Orphan Boy Mine. The Orphan Boy and its sister, Orphan Girl, were developed about1895 and operated until 1956. In addition to the gift of land, a significant industry gift was obtained to develop a first class training facility, which we call the Underground Mine Education Center (UMEC). The UMEC has been funded primarily by industry through donations of dollars, equipment, and supplies. The UMEC is a unique hands-on, educational environment for today’s students who are being trained to find, develop and process the worlds' natural resources. The center complements courses in mining engineering, geological engineering, environmental engineering, metallurgical engineering and occupational safety and health. It also serves as a as research facility utilized by students and faculty, and other organizations interested in doing research a hard rock underground mine. LOCATION The Orphan Boy and Orphan Girl Mine are located approximately 700 feet (ft.) apart and the Orphan Girl Mine is part of the World Museum of Mining. Underground they are connected on various levels and all levels below the 100 ft. level are currently flooded. The Orphan Boy mine was 804 ft. deep and Orphan Girl was 3200 ft. deep. The surface locations of the two mines and some of the underground workings on the 100 ft. level are shown on Figure 1 (2015). CONSTRUCTION Land ownership was gifted from BP/ARCO in 2010 and planning started immediately. In June of 2011, site development for the decline to the 100 ft. Level of the Orphan Boy began with a satisfactory portal site developed (Figure 2). We hoped to be able to start driving the decline in July. However, the portal was sited approximately 125 ft. away from a natural gas line that bisected the Montana Tech campus. While outside the right of way for the line, Northwestern Energy requested that no blasting be performed near the gas line until such time as the gas line was abandoned in the fall so decline development was put on hold. The gas line was officially abandoned in January of 2012.

"Huge amounts of air pollution scrubber sludge have been generated during ferromanganese production using blast furnace. These residues have been historically deposited in ponds near steel making plants. They are very rich in zinc, manganese and lead (5 to 40 %) and also contain aluminum and iron. Considering the market value of these metals, brownfield sites can now be used as secondary resources. These ponds also have to be cleaned up to meet the environmental regulations.We have developed a hydrometallurgical process to recover Zn, Mn and Pb in order to produce valuable compounds of Mn and Zn and recover the final Pb residue by pyrometallurgy. The Zn and Mn compounds need to be pure enough to be economically valuable. Batch laboratory tests were carried out to determine suitable selective leaching conditions. The investigated operating conditions were acid concentration, pulp density and temperature. Optimal conditions to maximize zinc extraction (100 %) and manganese extraction (95.9 %) were found using sulfuric acid and sodium metabisulfide. The final residue contained 14.8 to 23.8 % of Pb. Then, Zn was recovered in the form of ZnO or ZnS by precipitation and Zn metal by electrowinning, while Mn was recovered as MnCO3 with a fairly acceptable concentration of impurities.INTRODUCTIONFerromanganese has been produced by pyrometallurgy in much of Western Europe for centuries. Use of wet scrubber to remove pollutant and dust particles from gas stream was common for most of these operations. Those residues contain high concentration of Zn, Mn and Pb. They have been left to decant in settling ponds installed close to the steel production plants. They now constitute heavily contaminated artificial soils. Those sludges are so contaminated with Zn, Mn and Pb that they can be used for metal production. Currently, no method is available to decontaminate these residues and recover Zn, Mn and Pb. Therefore, an approach considering these brownfield sites as secondary resource is in development. Doing so would achieve two goals, decontaminate the site and produce metals.. An extensive design phase testing program in which 10 piles and 2 drilled shafts were instrumented and statically load tested to failure, was undertaken to establish relevant foundation design parameters for two bridges in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. The bearing strata at both test sites was a calcareous, overconsolidated, firm to very stiff, slightly sandy, clayey silt (locally known as Cooper Marl). Confirmation dynamic and static loading tests on production piles indicated only 50 to 60% of anticipated pile capacities; including consideration of time effects. Supplemental subsurface explorations did not reveal any significant variations in marl properties. Ultimately, 22 static and 75 dynamic tests were performed on production piles for a 2 mile section of the project. Pore water pressures in the marl were also monitored during and after pile driving. A study of unit skin friction in the marl as a function of time revealed two distinct trends: piles driven in areas with a sand overlaying the marl gained more capacity significantly faster than those driven through a clay or silt. Although the insitu marl properties are apparently similar across the site, the material immediately above the marl evidently has a large effect on pile capacity. This effect of overburden on pile capacity was verified by testing piles over a period of two years.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) can occur as a natural phenome­non through oxidation of sulfide minerals. Oxidation by air and water can be exacerbated by mining. Because AMD can exhib­it low pH, it is capable of extracting heavy metals from mineral deposits. The result is highly acidic drainage with elevated heavy metal concentrations - the combination of which can cause extensive environmental damage. Because of the importance of these factors, this paper is focused on sulfate based AMD. Due to widespread mining, the occurrence of AMD is ubiqui­tous. As a result, several approaches to treatment have been developed. Chemical treatment using alkali is most commonly employed to treat AMD. There are alternative methods of treat­ment, as well as alternative ways of handling treatment sludges or concentrates. Dewatering of sludge or concentrates is beyond the scope of this paper. Within the family of chemical treatment processes, there are three principal recognized methods, namely, "Conventional," "High Density Sludge" (HDS) and "Heavy Metals Removal Process" (HMRP). All three are now employed or specified for treating AMO at mining sites which are being reclaimed under Superfund. Only limited data are available for more specialized chemical treatment processes such as "ferrate", borohydride membrane and electrochemical methods. Therefore, these data are not included here. Performance data for these three processes are presented in this paper and comparison among them is made. Comparisons include consideration of water quality, sludge characteristics, and operational ease. Capital and operational cost comparisons of these processes were addressed in a previous paper by the authors (see bibliography). The results presented here are impo1tant not only to metals mining, but are also applicable to other industries experiencing metals-laden acidic wastes including: coal mining and prepara­tion, metal plating, and electronics circuit board manufacturing. The acceptance of any process should be based on bench scale demonstration before implementation is contemplated. The three processes included herein are discussed in relation to the particular sites at which they are in use, or their use is planned. The sites selected were representative of the various types of processes and the wastewater parameters.

Secondary minerals, amorphous materials, and biologic entities that form on building stone can cause aesthetically unflattering changes in color and may even result in stone decay. Techniques to determine causes of such changes generally have entailed destructive sampling and often required chemical, thin section, X-ray, or other relatively slow, expensive measurements. We have found that a rapid leach of in-place stone using small volumes (50-100 ml) of very pure distilled, deionized water provides recovery of sufficient dissolved material to help diagnose stone anomalies. Water is sprayed onto the stone and collected in a nonwetting plastic pan. Ion chromatograph analysis of waters thus collected from more than 160 sites showed wide variations in concentration of anions F, Cl, NO3, and SO4. Anion analyses were made in minutes for less than $20 per sample. Cations Ca, Mg, Fe, and Sr also were detected, and analyses might be used to determine mineral sources using equilibrium computer models. Solid particles filtered from the samples can be examined microscopically to provide further information about atmospheric agents affecting the stone. The collected water can even be evaporated to precipitate dissolved minerals. Chloride values in samples rinsed from stone ran as high as up to 17,000 ppm, nitrate to 100 ppm, and sulfate to 1,000 ppm. Limited data also indicate that measurable amounts of fluoride were found in some of the rinse waters. Chlorides were most abundant in areas where the stone has become dimpled or spalled. Nitrates were generally higher near ground level, and sulfate tended to be more abundant in samples taken from higher sites or from sheltered sites. Dark-stained limestone tended to yield less soluble material than clean-looking stone. Leachable elements were higher in samples from urban areas. Most of our data are from limestone buildings, but the technique works on other types of dimension stone, man-made construction materials, and even natural outcrops of rocks. Longitudinal studies show that soluble materials vary through time and are affected by climate. This rapid, in situ leach technique, although still being perfected, shows great promise in the diagnosis of stone alteration and in the evaluation of stone treatments because it is completely nondestructive.

Some of the problems associated with the acid treatment of oil wells are related to the control of the composition of formation treating acid. One test usually made at the well site is the determination of the acid concentration. Heretofore, the concentration of the acid delivered to the well site usually has been interpreted from a hydrometer measurement of the specific gravity of the acid solution. Experience has shown that this indirect measurement of acid concentration can give erroneous results. More reliable results are, of course, obtainable by the titration method; however, this method is not easily adapted to well-site testing. To overcome these objections, a device was developed for use in the field which permits determination of the concentration of treating acid both quickly and accurately at the time of the acid treatment. Its purpose was three-fold, namely, to determine: (1) the concentration of the fresh treating acid, (2) the concentration of the spent acid returning from the well, and (3) the solubility of formation samples in treating acid. The device was designed to operate on the principle of the stoichiometric relation between the calcium carbonate—hydrochloric acid reaction and the carbon dioxide gas resulting from the reaction. By confining the carbon dioxide gas within a reaction cell of the type shown in Fig. 1, the pressure inside the cell is increased. Since the pressure is an indication of the quantity of carbon dioxide gas produced, it may be used to estimate the concentration of the acid, provided an excess of calcium carbonate is used. From information on the volume of the reaction cell, the volume of acid used, and the pressure and temperature of the gas after the completion of the reaction, the concentration of the treating acid may be computed. The reaction cell is essentially a pressure vessel equipped with a pressure gage, temperature indicator. pressure release valve, and a special sample holder. Plastic and metal construction makes the cell both rugged and acid-resistant. The sample holder is so designed that a sample of calcium carbonate (or sample of carbonate rock) can be dropped into the acid

The LIFE-Environment Demonstration Project ?Treating Waste for Restoring Land Sustainability?(www.bangor.ac.uk/ies/TWIRLS/TWIRLS_home.htm), a project initiated by the University of Wales, Bangor, UK in which NAGREF is a partner, aims to demonstrate the effective use of industrial and municipal wastes for the remediation of post-industrial and degraded sites in urban and rural sites. Within the framework of this project, a schist quarry, which is located in a mountainous area near Athens and which has been exploited in the past for cement production, was chosen for bioremediation experiments in collaboration with the quarry owners, TITAN Cement Co. Three different areas within the quarry were selected representing 3 different topographies. These were a compacted, flat area with seasonal water logging (untreated control), a gently sloping, land formed area; and artificially created mounds of overburden rock material formed on the flat area. Compost produced from mixing municipal waste, green waste and digested sewage sludge at the recycling plant of the Association of Communities and Municipalities in the Attica Region (ACMAR), near Athens was used for nutrient amendment. Six replicates of three treatments were applied with varying compost application rates in order to examine the effect of the addition of organic matter in the establishment of suitable vegetation on the infertile schist material. Pine trees (Pinus halepensis Mill.), 4 per replicate, were pocket planted in a volume of 3 liters of schist or schist-compost mixture (1:2 and 2:1). Tree height, main stem diameter and branching were measured following planting and these measurements will be repeated annually to test hypotheses that compaction and water logging reduce Pine establishment by natural regeneration and that nutrient addition improves establishment of pine on schist waste. The availability of nutrients and variation in other soil physico-chemical parameters will also be studied in each treatment and related to plant growth. As a demonstration project, open days are planned on the site for the public and official bodies involved in municipal waste handling and other relevant areas. The aim of these will be to illustrate the effective re-use of waste for the sustainable restoration of post-industrial and degraded land.

Thermovision monitoring of surface temperature has been examined for the purpose of detection of spontaneous combustion of early stage. Measurements were carried out in bituminous and subbituminous coal mines. It was found that surface temperature heterogenities can be considered as common phenomenon in mine openings. However, the most of the observed temperature heterogenities were not connected with coal spontaneous combustion of early stage. These, so called [non-spontaneous combustion] temperature heterogenities in surface of mine openings were found to be caused by: l. Different conditions of heat transfer between opening surface and air stream; 2. Low temperature (natural) oxidation of coal; 3. Dissipated heat loses of working machine. Sites of early stage spontaneous combustion of coal were characterized by: 1. More significant, local rise in surface temperature comparing with low temperature coal oxidation; 2. Evolution of carbon monoxide with local concentration near the surface of such site more than about 15 ppm (bituminous coals) or 30 ppm (subbituminous coals). INTRODUCTION Mine fires are a serious hazard to life and result in a considerable loss of coal reserves. Thus, great attention is paid to investigation of new methods enabling already early detection of self-heating of coal. The earlier a fire is observed, the easier would it be to deal with. Detection methods used in coal mines are mainly based on: 1. [Mine air analysis]. Changes in composition of mine air are examined. Products of spontaneous heating of coal, not being present in mine air under normal conditions, are considered as indicators of anomalous behaviour of coal (carbon monoxide, unsaturated hydrocarbons) (Mackenzie-Wood and Strang, 1990). 2. [Temperature measurements]. Sites of higher temperature level comparing surroundings are looking for underground using various direct or indirect methods of temperature measurements. This paper summarizes experience from thermovision monitoring, as one of the latest indirect temperature measurement technique, used for the purpose of early detection of self-heating of coal in mine openings. INFRARED THERMOVISION Infrared thermovision device of AGEMA Infrared systems AB (Sweden) was used for the in situ measurements. The constant value of emissivity factor, 0.95, was pre-set as the most probable level of emissivities of coal and rocks in mine conditions.

Fleet management systems have been adopted by many open pit mines throughout the world and the resulting improvement in truck cycle times has been one of the most significant contributors to mine efficiency. Ongoing enhancements to fleet management systems such as interfaces for vital signs monitoring have given incremental efficiency gains. Each incremental improvement is another step towards a grand vision of a totally automated mine. A relatively new fleet management system is being integrated with two other technologies to provide a highly reliable platform for a networked information system which monitors mine machinery and production. The paper reviews the integration project, the features of the new mine site information network platform and the contribution to productivity and safety. The new fleet management system has a predictive truck dispatch algorithm. It also has a distributed database that replicates rapidly so that each machine in the fleet has an identical database, thereby making each machine aware of other machinesÆ locations on the site. High precision systems for navigating and monitoring machinery such as drills, dozers, draglines and shovels provide individual machine operators with cockpit style real-time information to increase their operational efficiency. The integration of the new fleet management systems capabilities with the high precision systems that provide production information, machine vital signs data and operator information means that the mine operations and maintenance managers have real-time access to the whole mine siteÆs production data. Such a mine monitoring and reporting system is dependent on reliable wireless communications and reliable positions. Positions in fleet management and high precision systems for open pit mines are usually provided by global positioning system (GPS). Other global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) such as Glonass, and in the future Galileo, will provide additional satellite cover; however, some parts of open pit mines do not have enough sky visibility for reliable GNSS positioning and so a new centimetre level wireless positioning system called Locata is being integrated with the fleet and high precision systems to augment and backup the GNSS positions. The final integrated system will provide the highest levels of reliable position-based information to all stakeholders in a mineÆs operation, ensuring gains in productivity and safety.

"Working on or near water at active, closed or abandoned mine sites is inherently dangerous. Between 1996 and 1999, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) reported 17 fatalities involving drowning at U.S. metal, non metal and coal mines (MSHA, 2000). Openpit mines which fill with water following mine closure, called pit lakes, present numerous risks to environmental monitoring teams including: a) drowning, b) hypothermia, c) falls to the ground from the top of high walls, d) collapse of unstable access roads, e) rock falls and avalanches from pit walls, f) avalanchegenerated tsunamis traveling across the lake surface and g) rapid degassing events.Some pit lakes are simply not safely or easily accessible for ongoing monitoring. However, the routine collection of water samples from the entire water column on a regular basis is needed to monitor the evolution of water quality over time, verify the accuracy of numerical predictions and, ultimately, manage lake water chemistry and ecological risks. For pit lakes with surface water discharge, regular monitoring is used to appropriately design and adjust water treatment plants in order to produce acceptable site discharge water quality.As a product of these risks and the need for water samples, mining companies spend considerable expense on pit lake safety as part of monitoring programs. This includes training personnel for on water duties and hazards, purchasing or hiring specialized equipment and personnel (such as boats, boat operators, personal floatation devices and cold-water clothing called mustang suits), stabilizing pit walls and maintaining safe access roads to the lake surface and employing spotters who can directly communicate with emergency medical services to watch sampling activities because cell phones and radio signals can be blocked by pit walls. Some sites utilize redundancy to prepare for unexpected incidents and accidents. For example, one Canadian mining company requires two boats on the water during pit lake sampling events, with a third boat on the shoreline, gassed and ready to go. In addition, water samplers are required to hold Marine Emergency Duties training to ensure the entire boat crew is sufficient and competent for the safe operation of the vessel in the event of an accident."

The kcICON design-build project in Kansas City, Missouri includes widening the existing roadway, improving interchanges and grade separation bridges, and replacing the Missouri River Bridge. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) typically utilizes steel H-piles and steel pipe piles as driven pile support for bridges. After bidding the kcICON project, the cost of steel rose significantly and the design-build contractor used an innovative approach to reduce foundation costs without significantly affecting the project schedule. The kcICON team conducted a value engineering evaluation of alternative foundation types for use at four grade separation structures. The result of the value engineering evaluation was selection of precast, pre-stressed concrete (PPC) piles as the preferred foundation alternative. Terracon developed a test program to evaluate the performance, capacity, and suitability of PPC piles at the site using a PDA and CAPWAP analyses. This paper presents the value engineering design, rationale for selection of PPC piles, results of the pile test program, and findings during production pile driving. The collaborative approach to the project by MoDOT and the kcICON team, combined with testing and a site-specific design approach, resulted in substantial savings for the design-build contractor.

Southland contains over 70 per cent of New ZealandÆs recoverable coal resources, and an investigation into the potential effects of coal mining on SouthlandÆs water resources is therefore of interest. This paper investigates pit-lake water quality in relation to current mining activities within the sub-bituminous coal and lignite deposits of Southland.   Water quality data was collected from pit-lakes in sub-bituminous and lignite deposits from October 2005 to March 2006. After periods of settled weather, turbidity increased with depth at the sub-bituminous pit-lake (10 - 21 NTUs from 5 - 30 m). In the stratified sub-bituminous pit-lake in March 2006, heavy rainfall caused higher turbidity in the epilimnion than the top of the hypolimnion (20 NTU vs 13 NTU) reflecting surface water runoff (up to 1993 NTUs) and epilimnion mixing. In contrast, turbidity at the lignite sites was variable due to the shallowness of the lakes, but noticeable increases following disturbance and adverse weather were recorded. High turbidity at the sub-bituminous deposits was attributed to the presence of clay minerals such as kaolinite whereas turbidity at the lignite sites was more likely short term and a result of heavier minerals such as quartz.   Trace element concentrations at both sites were low when compared to mine waters in other coal areas in New Zealand and no samples exceeded ANZECC water quality trigger values for 80 per cent species protection. Pit-lake water pH levels were lower and more variable in the lignite deposit (4.18 - 7.30 vs 7.24 - 8.98 in the sub-bituminous deposits). In the lignite pit-lakes, higher concentrations of trace elements (eg Dissolved As - 0.034 ppm and Dissolved Mn - 1.09 ppm) and lower pH (ÿ4) were observed at the bottom of active pits compared to inactive pits. It is possible that quartz pebble conglomerates containing sulphide minerals within the lignite seams are responsible for this.   Further investigation into the mine waters, waste rock and lake sediments will help get a better understanding of the results observed and long term processes that occur.

The Galore Creek Mine project is one of the newest major mining projects underdevelopment in Canada. The project is located in a very remote area of northwester British Columbia and is being developed by Nova Gold Resources of Vancouver. The mine project comprises one of the largest and highest grade undeveloped porphyry-related gold-silver-copper deposits in North America. In order to access the mine site anew 120 km road is planned to be constructed including a 4.4 km mine access road tunnel. Glaciers with heavy snow pack cover approximately two-thirds of the tunnel alignment with a maximum cover of 1,200 m. The size of the access road tunnel is about 50 m2 and has been designed as a large single lane road tunnel to accommodate the transport of large size mining equipment for mine start up and ongoing operations. The rock conditions along the tunnel alignment comprise very strong volcanic rocks. Key services for mining operations will be incorporated into the tunnel comprising diesel and power as well as the concentrate pipeline. Structural portal canopies have been incorporated into the tunnel design due to the risk of rockfalls and avalanches in the portal areas. The mine access road tunnel is a significant and critical-path component to the overall project to provide vehicular access to allow construction of the mine site. In order to meet the expected mine start up date the construction of the tunnel works are to commence prior to any other works at the mine site and will be constructed entirely by helicopter support. Geotechnical investigations commenced in the summer of 2006 with the removal of the overburden materials at the portals to assess bedrock conditions. Tunnel construction from both portals is expected to commence in the spring of 2007. The construction of the mine project is subject to and awaiting environmental approval in the spring of 2007. The mine access road tunnel will be the longest private road tunnel in North America. The key design and constructability issues for the mine access road tunnel project are presented and discussed.

The Ashlu Creek Hydro-electric project, located north of Squamish, BC, at the confluence of Ashlu Creek and the Squamish River, comprises a 49 MW run-of-river project and features a 4.08 m diameter, 4.4 km power tunnel and a 128 m deep drop shaft. The Ashlu Creek Hydro-electric project is being developed by Innergex under Ashlu Creek Investments Limited. Site civil works are being completed by Ledcor CMI of Vancouver with tunnel construction by Frontier Kemper Constructors ULC under a lump sum design-build contract. Site works got underway in September 2006 with the construction of the tunnel portal and laydown area. These site works required rock slope stabilization over a 50 m rock slope to secure the laydown area as well as the construction of a tail track muck tipping station and structural wall to facilitate TBM excavation and spoil removal. Starter tunnel construction commenced in early 2007 and TBM tunneling started in the late spring of 2007 and is planned to continue until early 2009. The power tunnel is being excavated using a 1,200 kW Wirth open-type hard rock TBM dressed with 31?17' cutters. The TBM featured two fixed mounted rock bolt drills behind the finger shield: these were removed and replaced with jacklegs to improve access. A probe drill at the end of the main beam is also present. The geology along the 4.4 km power tunnel comprises very strong and generally massive granitic bedrock with rock strength greater than 225 MPa. A unique feature of the project is that no subsurface investigations have been completed for the tunnel however extensive bedrock outcrops are present along the Ashlu Creek valley. A historical quarry exists approximately mid-way along the tunnel alignment that has exposed good quality granitic bedrock. TBM tunneling to date has achieved advance rates of 10?20 m/day with a maximum of 23 m and has encountered all of the anticipated six major fault zones where the installation of various standard high capacity tunnel support was successful to facilitate TBM advance through these sections.
