This paper presents the results of load tests to assess the vertical load carrying capacity of concrete expanded base piles, or pressure injected footings, for various projects located near Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The site subsurface conditions and load test methods are described for the Vancouver International Airport site and the test results are reviewed under both compression and tension loading conditions. The pile load tests at Vancouver International Airport are compared to load tests at other sites near Vancouver. The pile load test results are reviewed with respect to available methods of estimating the vertical capacity of this type of piles. The effect of ground improvement by densification on the load test results is considered. The limitations of tension load tests on single piles with respect to uplift resistance of pile groups under seismic conditions are pointed out. Recommendations are proposed regarding pile load test methodology to estimate ultimate vertical load carrying capacity of plies for limit state design.

Within the context of acid mine drainage (AMD) associated with mining activities worldwide there has been a tremendous research effort to determine the extent of AMD and assess the influencing factors controlling this process. However, the majority of the current approaches focus on local and regional scale case studies and do not provide a global scale picture of AMD potentials. This study attempts to develop a method aiming at a global environmental impact assessment related to AMD. To confine the complex topic this study concentrates on acidic emissions from heaps in consequence of copper mining processes. In order to pursue this approach two factors are of significant advantage: a comprehensive environmental data base of more then 600 copper sites worldwide and a method which has been developed and proven to be successful in assessing environmental impacts related to land use. Current and future research efforts focus on using this background knowledge to enable both a comparison between sites and a categorisation of sites according to emission estimates.

Union Carbide began looking seriously at heap leaching in 1971. At that time some 1.6 million tons of mineral averaging 0.40 kg U308 /t) (0.80 lb U308) were stockpiled at various sites around the Gas Hills, Wyoming, uranium facility. Several alternatives for economically exploiting these reserves were considered and heap leaching seemed the most attractive. At the time, Western Nuclear Inc. was operating a heap leaching project nearby in which the low-grade ore was leached with sulfuric acid, the product liquor treated in an on site solvent extraction circuit, and the stripped product liquor re-acidified and recycled. The operators were most generous in allowing us to visit their site and in answering our questions. They were also helpful in discussing the problems associated with heap leaching. Their experience confirmed our belief that it was possible to operate a heap leach profitably on material too low grade for conventional milling.

Begun in 1992, an abandoned and inactive mine inventory in the Black Hills National Forest has resulted in a hazard ranking of the most severely affected sites. For purposes of the inventory, the Black Hills were divided into three main regions: the northern Black Hills, with primarily gold mines; the central Black Hills, with pegmatite mines and some gold mines; and the southern Black Hills, with primarily uranium mines. A computerized data base has been developed along with standard forms for field crews. The forms were designed to provide maximum compatibility with other abandoned mine inventories on various federal and state lands. Measures recommended for the most hazardous and heavily affected sites include regrading of unstable slopes, fencing of open shafts, and remediation of the most severe acidic mine drainage problems. Specific examples are illustrated where remediation and safety measures were recommended or have been implemented. The vast majority of the sites, however, needed little or no remedial action.

Recently there has been increased recognition o'f the cost savings that can be achieved by the greater use of offsite preassembly for the construction of industrial plants. Preassembly is a method of construction which involves considerable offsite assembly of complete sections of an industrial plant in established fabrication shops. The preassemblies are transported to the plant site, often by large and oversize transport systems where they are set on prepared foundations, finished and interconnected to other sections of the plant as required. The concept of preassembly is not new, but widespread interest has been shown because site construction costs in all parts of the world have increased rapidly and often at a greater rate than in established fabrication areas. Particular interest has be focused on remote, isolated and inhospitable plant site locations. These areas require the import of skilled labour, the payment of high labour rate premiums and the development of infrastructure to support the workforce for the duration of the construction period.

To document the performance of mine roof and roof support systems the U.S. Bureau of Mines (IJSBM) has been installing instrumentation at selected sites in U.S. coal mines. Much of this support and roof instrumentation has been installed in high stress conditions to maximize differences in performance. Summarized in this paper are the results of four such site investigations. The roof geology at the four sites is quite different and is quantified using the USBM's Coal Mine &f Rating (CMRR). The studies included detailed measurements of roof movement using multi-point extensometers, as well as measurements and monitoring of bolt loading. The investigations include developmental loading and abutment loading from longwall and room-and-pillar mining operations. Some of the issues examined are the effect of the horizontal stress field, the effect of installed tension (torque-tension versus resin bolts), the effect of reduced annulus bolt holes, and the differences between similar bolts supplied by different manufacturers.

At nuclear facilities, three types of radioactive waste must be managed: (1) high-level liquid waste containing fission products from the chemical separation of irradiated uranium, (2) low-level condensates from the concentration of the high-level waste, and (3) dry solids such as obsolete process equipment, spent ion exchange resins, and irradiated metal scrap. The geological and environmental characteristics of a site are important considerations in planning the waste management program. At the Savannah River Plant, low-level liquids and dry solids are safely and economically placed in the soil where the geologic and hydrologic conditions are favorable. Within the general area where the waste originates, studies are made to locate seepage basins and burial grounds in the most favorable sites: (1) soils should have a high ion exchange capacity and moderate to low permeability, (2) the water table should be deep, and (3) burial sites should be relatively distant from the nearest flowing stream.

The "Art" of Big Hole Drilling has been in a continual state of evolution at the Nevada Test Site since the start of underground testing in 1961. Emplacement holes for nuclear devices are still being drilled by the rotary drilling process, but almost all the hardware and systems have undergone many changes during the intervening years. The current design of bits, cutters, and other big hole drilling hardware results from contributions of manufacturers and Test Site personnel. The dual string, air lift, reverse circulation system was developed at the Test Site. Necessity was really the Mother of this invention, but this circulation system is worthy of consideration under almost any condition. Drill rigs for Big Hole drilling are usually adaptations of large Oil Well drill rigs with minor modifications required to handle the big bits and drilling assemblies. Steel remains the favorite shaft lining material, but a lot of thought is being given to concrete linings, especially precast concrete.

There has been considerable advancement in recent years in the tools, both software and hardware, available to allow efficient digitalization of site records during the construction of geotechnical works. Whilst these tools have excelled at replacing handwritten records, the ability to use digital records to validate design and construction requirements in real time or even within reasonable timescales has generally been limited to the development of bespoke ‘prototype’ project specific solutions. This paper describes the development and implementation of an industry standard design schedule and the benefits of the broad adoption of a single database schema for data recorded on geotechnical sites. The former has brought significant improvements and automation of the design process, whilst the latter has enabled the validation of the constructed works against design intent in almost real time. Further details of the standardized design schedule, already publicly available in the UK through the FPS, examples and lessons learnt from implementing digital site record systems on live projects are presented herein. The utilization of cloud computing technology and complex algorithms linking plant/rig instrumentation with design data can further automate construction sites using IoT (Internet of Things) best practices. The authors will share their experience of the recent deployment of a digitalized design-to-construction record system, give recommendations for future development and a call for an industry wide drive to finalize and adopt the AGS Piling data schema.

With the prevalence of Mine Internet of Things (MIoT), different types of sensors have been widely deployed in mine sites for environmental monitoring and operational management. Currently, sensors in mine sites are mainly powered by cables or batteries. However, the deployment and maintenance of a power supply network can be difficult and expensive, and batteries have a limited lifespan. The vibration energy harvesting (VEH) technology can be used to provide power for lowpower sensors in mine sites. This presentation briefly introduces three widely used VEH methods (ie piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and electrostatic). The performance of a commercial electromagnetic energy harvester (ReVibe model D) is evaluated based on the vibration of a lab vibrator (3 g, 50 Hz) and an idling SUV automobile (0.3 g, 25 Hz). Experimental results indicate that a ReVibe energy harvester can generate adequate electricity to power a sensor, and its power output depends on the load resistance as well as the vibration frequency and amplitude of vibration sources. To apply VEH to mining applications, this study also analyses the characteristics of vibration sources at the mine site based on the vibration data collected from various operating machines in a coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP). The vibration analysis results indicate that all the measured vibration sources in the CHPP can generate stable and abundant vibrations, characterised by substantial amplitudes (up to 5.55 g) and low dominant frequencies (ranging from 14 Hz to 25 Hz), which are sufficient for VEH.

A method for removing metallic mercury from contaminated tailing, using the flotation process, is described. In order to define some relevant parameters for the mercury flotation system, microflotation and electrophoretic mobility tests were carried out on (pure) metallic mercury in the presence of several surfactants. Based on the results obtained from fundamental studies a series of bench scale flotation experiments with mercury containing tailings from two wetland sites in Brasil were done. The results of microflotation tests with mercury showed that by using cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, an increase in mercury flotability is observed in the acid pH range, whereas in the presence of potassium oleate the highest mercury flotability was found in the alkaline pH region. The mercury flotability using potassium amyl xanthate was improved by the addition at sodium dithionate as an activator. The bench scale flotation tests with contaminated tailings from Poconé (brazilian wetland site) showed a recovery of 70% when sodium dithionate was used as activator and potassium amyl xanthate as collector. The resulting coefficient of separation is around 60%. However, the results of the flotation experiments with fine fractions from amalgamation tailings from Peixoto de Azevedo (brazilian wetland site) showed a low mercury recovery (32%).The results from this work suggest that since in the Poconé site tailings, the metallic mercury is not completely associated to the finer particles, the flotation process to recover the metallic mercury seems very promisor.

Mode of occurrence and compositional variations of iron-manganese deposits from seamounts around the NW Pacific submarine island-arc area are described on the basis of on-site description during the Moana Wave Cruise MW9507 and other Japanese cruises, as well as geochemical and mineralogical analyses and dating on collected samples. Hydrogenetic and hydrothermal iron-manganese crusts occur at more than 80 sites out of 150 dredge hauls within a small area of 200x 200 km in the back arc region. The hydrogenetic crusts may have grown continuously at slow rates, but 2-3 times faster than those from the Central Pacific, associated with depletion of Co, Cu, and Ni contents. The site-maximum thickness of the hydrogenetic deposits trends to increase with the increase of distance from the active volcanic chain or the age of substrate volcanic rocks. Also the observed great local variations in thickness within single sites and on small scales may be resulted from post-depositional geological activity at the seamounts such as calcareous sedimentation, collapse of volcanic body and mass wasting,. On the other hand, the rapid hydrothermal manganese mineralization has occurred in place and time during arc volcanism and rifting and is still in progress at modern active areas. The ninety ICP/ES chemical plus XRD analysis show that these deposits are of distinct composition by origin or topographic provinces, but small-scale variation of the deposits of each origin and micro-scale depth variation are not clear.

Although many research studies had been carried out in the past in order to eliminate environmental issues produced from blasting unfortunately a general approach or formula has not been established yet because of the complexity of the matter. In addition to the wave and ground motion characteristics, the complexity of blasting parameters and site factors restrict the developing of a general criterion. So experimental site-specific studies should be still done in order to predict and control blasting effects.

Inco Limited, Ontario Division is currently in the process of decommissioning the Whistle Mine site located near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The most significant component of site decommissioning involved relocating approximately 6.4 million tonnes of acid-generating waste rock to the open pit from two adjacent stockpiles. An engineered cover system was designed for the backfilled pit to reduce the long-term production of acid rock drainage. Geochemical modelling was conducted to assess the effectiveness of various cover options on the longterm water quality of the backfilled pit. Results obtained from performance monitoring of cover system field trials at the site and estimated full-scale construction costs were used to select an appropriate material for the cover system barrier layer. The two-dimensional soil-atmosphere model VADOSE/W was used to develop a calibrated model of covered waste rock based on field data obtained from the cover trials, which was subsequently used to predict net percolation and oxygen ingress through various cover system alternatives for site-specific climate conditions. Erosion and landform evolution numerical modelling was completed to assist in designing the runoff management system and final landform for the pit cover system. The potential impact of various physical, chemical and biological processes on the sustainable performance of the pit cover system was also considered in the design process. This paper provides an overview of the design and construction of the backfilled pit cover system.

The location of a decline shaft portal can have far reaching implications if the geotechnical conditions are not suited for safe and cost effective excavation. Ideally the portal should be positioned in an area where the excavation requires minimal support and the portal can be formed in reasonably competent rock. In many cases, however, the shaft is linked to an underground mining plan and the shaft may have to pass through poor ground conditions. Determining the optimal position at which tunnelling can commence i.e. the portal, is critical and requires a thorough geotechnical investigation. Methods used to acquire information for the assessment of the ground conditions are discussed in this paper. Selection of the appropriate methods is dependent on the anticipated ground conditions, the phase of investigation and restrictions due to site access and budget. Non-invasive techniques are often used during preliminary phases and invasive techniques for the detailed investigation. The methods used during each phase of investigation are discussed. Two case studies are then presented to provide examples of the investigative methods used in two different environments. The first being a flat featureless site with thick soils and deeply weathered bedrock, while the second is a mountainous site with differentially weathered rocky outcrops. Based on these cases, it is clear that an understanding of the geology and geomorphology of the site is vital to the final geotechnical assessment. Fiji is a developing nation that relies on economic opportunities and recently experienced increased interest in mining and mineral exploration that could potentially benefit the country. In order to understand the lack of, or failure of, past rehabilitation activity, this study applied risk-based approaches to identify the significance of activities or actions applicable to rehabilitation of post-mined land in Fiji. This involved the use of qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative risk methodologies, which allow assessment and evaluation of mechanisms of mining administration and practices, as well as rehabilitation methods and approaches that have been applied successfully to post-mined land in other countries with similar environmental and climatic conditions and social and regulatory environments to Fiji. The semi-quantitative risk-based technique followed an earlier approach applied for mine closure by Laurence (2006) and provided a systematic way to assess and evaluate rehabilitation issues that were identified on-site by assessors, who were able to estimate through expert judgement the likelihood and consequences based on conditions, situations observed and circumstances on-site. It demonstrated that experienced professionals could reproducibly score likelihood and consequence of selected items relevant to mine site rehabilitation, despite the wide-ranging issues identified during post mined land rehabilitation. The quantitative risk-based approach was adopted as a method to determine environmental bonds for mining projects using the assessment of consequences and likelihood results from the semi-quantitative approach, then incorporating unit cost of materials or activities for local conditions required to fully rehabilitate each issue at net present value. Across the globe, it is a common scenario that tailings storage facilities (TSFs) are being decommissioned; however, their subsequent impact on the local environment and landscape can often be overlooked during the mine planning process. In addition, the requirement of a cover system for a facilities closure may not be a priority until the latter stages of the mine/mill operation when potential cover materials may have been utilised elsewhere or, worse, buried. Developing a conceptual design and closure plan for a TSF early in a mining venture is fundamental to its success once operations have ceased. If a cover system is a planned component for rehabilitation of a TSF, it is vital that its design is appropriate to the facility and any local site constraints, such as climate and cover system material availability. It is also strongly recommended that various cover system options are physically trialled at the site by using performance-monitoring instrumentation. Through this process, an informed decision can be made regarding the most appropriate cover system design to meet any regulatory and stakeholder closure objectives and criteria specific to the site in question; however, in order for the cover system’s performance to be determined through on-site trials, it is essential that an appropriate instrumentation design is utilised. Often, little attention is paid to the data that is being obtained, and its importance may only become apparent after several years of monitoring at an expense to the venture. This should not be the case. Many sites have used an appropriate initial planning stage to understand what is required for the successful closure of a TSF, how it can be achieved and how monitoring data can be utilised to prove, or otherwise, that a cover system design will be a success.CITATION:Barritt, R and Scott, P, 2015. "The project’s goal was to construct the Al Ghazala Intercontinental, a multi-use development in the bay area of Tripoli overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The site of the project is located approximately 500 ft (150 m) from the Mediterranean coast, near the Al Ghazala roundabout in the town center of Tripoli, Libya. The investor of the project was Magna Properties Group, Ltd. – Libya, the main contractor was Man Enterprise S.A.L., and the design and construction management was performed by Dar Al-Handasah Engineering. Trevi S.p.A. was contracted to perform the design and construction of the anchored diaphragm walls and dewatering systems for the excavation of a two-level basement car park, which extends across the full footprint of the site.The site was approximately 640 ft by 230 ft (195 m by 70 m) in plan and nearly flat. The groundwater level typically varies from about 11 ft to 23 ft (3.4 m to 7.0 m) above mean sea level. To construct the required raft foundation, it was necessary to excavate the area down to El. -15.7 ft to -26.3 ft (-4.8 m to -8.0 m), which resulted in an excavation depth ranging from about 27 ft to 39 ft (8.3 m to 12.0 m) below the existing ground surface.Subsurface ConditionsThe subsurface site investigation was performed in three phases by Al-Tamier Engineering Consulting Bureau. During Phase 1, a preliminary investigation was undertaken during the early stages of the project to obtain information about the general stratigraphy and groundwater level at the site. Phase 2 was performed to obtain subsurface information and design parameters, and Phase 3 was performed as a supplementary ground investigation to investigate unexpected ground conditions identified during Phase 2. In total, 14 boreholes were drilled to depths ranging from about 80 ft to 180 ft (24 to 55 m). The generalized subsurface profile is quite heterogeneous, and is predominantly composed of sand with silt and gravel that is underlain by limestone, calcarenite and claystone"
