The publication, RI8507, from the U.S. Bureau of Mines established an envelope equation that related scaled-distance to peak particle velocity in an attempt to predict ground vibration in the design phase of a blast. This has been further modified by Oriard, Dupont, Konya & Konya, and others to develop more refined prediction models for specific situations to obtain better predictions. While these equations can be an ideal starting point for a greenfield blasting project or a project with no given information, these equations can have errors.

This paper highlights the successful pile load testing program for the redevelopment of Pier One in East Boston, Massachusetts. Pier One is a 5.4-acre parcel on a dormant waterfront site used in the 1950s as a warehouse and distribution facility. The developer plans to re-use the existing 14-inch-diameter concrete-filled steel pipe piles to support four 5- to 7-story apartment buildings above a 2-story parking garage. A pile load testing program was developed to establish if the existing piles could support design loads of 240 kips for project financial feasibility and up to 300 kips for a significant reduction in future foundation costs. The Phase 1 program consisted of statnamic and dynamic load testing on two piles with two loading intervals (200 and 240 kips). Based upon the favorable results of the Phase 1 program, the Phase 2 program involved statnamic load testing on two piles and dynamic load testing on ten piles with three loading intervals (200, 240, and 300 kips). The Phase 2 program confirmed the favorable results which were applied across varying strata thicknesses and pile embedment depths. The average allowable capacity for the piles tested was greater than 300 kips with pile movement up to 0.3 inches.

"In January 2012, AngloGold Ashanti Córrego do Sítio Mineração, with assistance from Sherritt International Corporation, commissioned a new autoclave for pressure oxidation of refractory gold concentrate at the Córrego do Sítio operation in Brazil. Start-up of the plant occurred in a few weeks and enhanced gold recovery was realized almost immediately, with 94% gold extraction achieved in carbon in leach (CIL), compared to less than 70% without pressure oxidation. This paper describes start-up and commissioning of the plant and provides an overview of plant performance over the last five years.INTRODUCTION In 2008, AngloGold Ashanti purchased the former São Bento property from Eldorado Gold, which, along with AngloGold Ashanti’s existing Córrego do Sítio mine, was renamed AngloGold Ashanti Córrego do Sítio Mineração (AGA Mineração). Later that year, the Sherritt Technologies division of Sherritt International Corporation (Sherritt) was contacted to begin batch and continuous pilot plant tests to determine the amenability of the AGA Mineração refractory gold concentrates to the pressure oxidation process. Based on the results of the batch and pilot plant tests, AGA Mineração requested basic and detailed engineering studies to be conducted by Sherritt, eventually leading to commissioning of the plant in January 2012. AGA Mineração’s plant is located in southeastern Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais, near the city of Belo Horizonte. AGA Mineração`s Phase 1 mine plan covers three sites in the Laranjeiras, Carvoaria Velha and Cachorro Bravo ore bodies, and is designed to process 60,000 tonnes of refractory gold concentrate per year to produce 140,000 ounces of gold per year with an 11 year life of mine (AngloGold Annual Financial Statements, 2010). Recovery of gold at AGA Mineração is based on Sherritt`s pressure oxidation technology for refractory gold concentrates (Berezowsky et al., 1991; Collins et al., 2011a; Collins et al., 2011b). This process had previously been applied to the recovery of gold at the São Bento site (Carvalho et al., 1988; de Silva et al., 1989), in a plant that was operational between 1986 and 2007 (Silva et al., 2004)."

In situ recovery (ISR) of uranium alters the baseline groundwater geochemistry in order to mobilize and complex uranium to extract and concentrate it. ISR wellfield restoration is often challenging, and primarily relies on groundwater sweep, reinjection of treated permeate, and/or injection of reductants. Greater focus should be placed on injection-based approaches (using existing infrastructure) based on established engineering concepts used for in situ remediation of groundwater plumes. Such injection-based approaches could shorten restoration timeframes consequently reducing long-term operational costs. This paper addresses various types of injection-based approaches to wellfield restoration based on in-situ remediation success with other constituents that require similar treatment. This paper describes necessary design practices for injecting reactive chemicals (e.g., reductants or biostimulants), operations and maintenance (O&M) strategies to prevent fouling of the chemical delivery system and well network, and natural constraints to restoration. Best practices for successful biostimulation strategies that minimize residual uranium, radium, oxoanions, and other trace elements are as described. Advantages of such injection-based approaches could include significant reductions in restoration times, and consequently, lower restoration costs.

The cycle time between adjacent stopes is critical to achieving the required production rate from 3500 Orebody; one of the Enterprise Mine orebodies. Current Mt Isa cemented fills require a 90-day cure period which had to be cut to 30 days while maintaining the required strength criteria. The Enterprise Mine Feasibility Study recommended that this be achieved by Cemented Slurry Rock Fill (CSRF), but that on-going research into paste fill be continued. The continuation of the research, in conjunction with overseas visits has recommended that the 3500 Orebody be filled with paste fill, with the potential to fill other orebodies. The paste fill will comprise cyclone and thickener dewatered copper tailings to which Portland Cement (PC) is added before vertical borehole delivery and undergound pipeline reticulation to individual stopes. The benefit is not only re-use of copper tailings but also much reduced binder usage.

Este artículo analiza la nueva producción de cobre a partir de "minerales de desecho" de baja ley usando la tecnología de Blue Planet Strategies DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrode Mining Effluent Treatment, por sus siglas en inglés), que tiene como objetivo salvar la brecha de procesamiento entre la solución débil de lixiviación en operaciones de extracción por solventes/electrowinning (SX/EW), removiendo electroquímicamente los metales a partir de corrientes débiles y a la vez generando productos concentrados en metales objetivo en un análogo funcional de extracción por solventes (SX). Se estudió el tratamiento de la débil solución de lixiviación pregnant (PLS por sus siglas en inglés) y se usó para estimar los impactos económicos y de producción para una hipotética lixiviación en pilas de cobre brownfield y una operación aumentada DEMET usando SX/EW para tratar el "mineral de desecho." Se presenta la remoción de cobre a un 86% de eficiencia en las placas por debajo de 0,1 g/L de cobre con un consumo de energía de 0.55 kWh/lb de cobre y una concentración del producto mayor a 10 g Cu/L. El modelamiento arrojó aproximadamente $2/ lb para la producción total de cobre y costos de tratamiento menores o iguales a $1/lb con un inmediato aumento del margen bruto de operación del 12% para el brownfield incrementado. Se indicó también un aumento de la vida de la mina con un margen bruto promedio de 38% en la producción aumentada de "mineral de desecho" con valores de cobre de $3.25/lb.

This report describes a U.S. Bureau of Mines investigation into the removal of gate road chain pillars in conjunction with longwall retreat mining. The research objective was to determine, through evaluations of the loads imposed on the gate road pillars and supplemental support elements in the entries, how the pillars, supplemental support, and entries were affected by the longwall abutment pressure. To achieve this goal, vibrating wire stressmeters and hydraulic flat jack pressure cells were installed in the support elements to monitor stress change caused by abutment pressure as a function of longwall face advance. The findings documented in this report are the result of information collected from instrumentation and observation at the mine. Pillar and support loading measurements and stability observations revealed that the roof and the support elements remained stable during panel retreat, while the face progressed at a normal rate of advance. The ability to safely and efficiently mine chain pillars during panel retreat increases resource recovery and can provide several other benefits described in this report.

"Less than 20,000 years ago, the last of the glaciers retreated from the Chicago region. They left behind sheets of glacial clay till underlain by dense, over-consolidated till (“hardpan”) below which is the limestone bedrock, found about 100 ft (30.5 m) below street level. The most notable feature in this profile is the unusually soft clay till that has historically been called “Chicago Blue Clay.”But the founding fathers of Chicago really didn’t care about what was under the ground. They recognized the importance of the city’s location as a potential trade and transportation hub. With access to the East through the Great Lakes and access to the West through the Mississippi River system, the viability of the city was evident. Chicago’s population grew rapidly. The city continued to grow through the Civil War years, but was dealt a devastating blow in 1871 by the Great Chicago Fire, leaving the city in ruins. The Birth of the SkyscraperAfter the cleanup of the Great Fire came the first real building boom in Chicago’s history. During this era, buildings were generally founded on shallow footings bearing on sand or clay. Many multistory buildings were constructed between 1880 and 1890 on spread footings. The first tall buildings were constructed with load bearing masonry walls. These early tall buildings suffered significant settlement as the soft clay underwent consolidation.The Home Insurance Building, built in 1885, was 12-stories tall and is generally acknowledged to be the first “skyscraper” in the U.S. It was the first building constructed with an iron skeleton frame instead of load bearing masonry walls. Spread footings were used under the interior columns in an effort to better distribute the loads, but the building still experienced large settlements.Construction began for the Monadnock Building in 1891. The 17-story building was built using load bearing walls 7 ft (2.1 m) thick, supported on rail-grillage footing foundations. When completed in 1893, the Monadnock Building boasted the title “World’s Largest Office Building.” The total building settlement over the past 125 years has been measured at over 20 in (0.51 m). The engineering community in the late 19th century observed settlement, but did not yet understand the process of consolidation of the soft clay beneath the city. During this time, many of the new buildings required structural repairs during and after construction; the problem was especially acute in buildings where highrise towers joined lower podium structures."

The main importance of acicular ferrite microstructures arises from their desired combination of mechanical properties in comparison with the bainite and ferrite-pearlite microstructures. Several factors affect the microstructural transition from bainite microstructure into the acicular ferrite one. As is well established any factor corrupting the prior austenitc grain boundaries nucleation potential, such as the thin layer of allotriomorph ferrite and the austenitc deformation inhomogenities may promote the acicular ferrite formation instead of bainite. Accordingly, this study deals with the effects of the aforementioned features on the acicular ferrite formation in low carbon microalloyed steel. The results indicate that the formation of strain-induced ferrite at the prior austenite grain boundaries accompanied by deformation inhomogenities in the austenite grains change the effectiveness of allotriomorph ferrite on acicular ferrite formation from active to inert one.

Nautilus Minerals, the world?s leader in exploration and development of deep ocean seafloor resources, is today focused on the recovery of high-grade copper and gold in seafloor massive-sulphide mineralization. These targeted mineralized belts, analogous to land-based volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, are located near plate boundaries in the back arc basins of the Western Pacific. The first deposit to be developed by the company is located at a depth of 1,600 meters at Solwara 1, in the benign waters of the Bismarck Sea. This location lies within the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea. From 2006 to 2009 the company completed detailed environmental and geological studies at Solwara 1, culminating in a number of world firsts, including the first Environmental Permit granted for the extraction of seafloor massive sulphide deposits and the first NI 43-101 compliant seafloor massive sulphide deposit resource statement. Nautilus has relied heavily on proven deepwater technologies from the oil and gas industry in the design of its production system. Pipeline trenching units, workclass ROVs, deepwater production risers and drill cuttings removal systems will be adapted to initiate this new and exciting industry. Key contractors used by Nautilus on this innovative project have all been selected for their deepwater experience (gained in the oil and gas industry), creativity and determination to launch this new industry successfully. Innovation is at the forefront of Nautilus? success to date. This paper summarizes the progress to date of this development which will provide a new source of minerals for the world and which will contribute to sustainable growth for the future.

A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach involves numerical modelling that explicitly represents how defects may be spatially distributed through a rock mass. A DFN is a 3D realisation of the ‘smaller scale’, non-deterministic defects; it is not an attempt to model larger, deterministic structures that should be identified as part of an engineering geology model. The approach utilises structural data in stochastic analyses to give a range of possible models that provides a tool for visualisation and analysis of a rock mass and indicates the potential large-scale slope or tunnel performance and stability.Stochastic fracture modelling for rock mass characterisation has significantly advanced over the past 25 years. With recent improvements to field data collection and computational power, it has become recognised internationally as a valuable tool for modelling some geomechanical problems encountered when designing excavations in fractured rock masses.This paper provides an introduction to the DFN approach, particularly the necessary input parameters and derivation of these from typical structural data sources, such as boreholes or scan line mapping. Of particular importance for engineering applications is validation of the simulated fracture network and techniques for doing so are discussed here.CITATION:Weir, F M and Fowler, M, 2014. This paper examines new copper production from waste-grade ore using Blue Planet Strategies’ DEMET™ (Dynamic Electrode Mining Effluent Treatment) technology, which aims to bridge the practical weak pregnant leach solution (PLS) processing gap in heap leach-solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) operations by electrochemically removing metals from weak streams and generating product streams strengthened in target metals in a functional analog to SX. Weak PLS treatment was studied and used to estimate the economic and production impacts for a representative hypothetical brownfield copper heap leaching and DEMET-augmented SX/ EW operation to utilize "waste ore." Copper removal at 86% plating efficiency to below 0.1 g/L copper with power consumption of 0.55 kWh/lb copper and product strengths of over 10 g/L copper are presented. Modeling yielded approximately $2/lb total copper production and = $1/lb treatment costs with an immediate operation gross margin increase of 12% for the augmented brownfield. Potential mine life extension with an average 38% gross margin on "waste ore" augmented production at copper values of $3.25/lb was also indicated.

En 1995 la compagnie NIOCAN inc. fut incorporée; ses actions furent inscrites à la bourse de Montréal en 1997, et à la bourse de Toronto en décembre 1999. Jusqu?à maintenant, NIOCAN a investi plus de 7 millions de dollars dans le développement de sa propriété minière de niobium située à quelques 40 kilomètres au nord-ouest de Montréal. Le haut rendement économique des deux gisements principaux que compte exploiter la compagnie, le S-60 et le HWM-2, a été établie par des études de faisabilité effectuées par le consortium Met-Chem/SNC-Lavalin. La mission que s?est donnée NIOCAN inc. consiste à mettre en production ses deux gisements et à devenir ainsi productrice de ferroniobium dans les plus brefs délais. Christmas morning 2020, an IED in an RV was detonated along an evacuated section of downtown Nashville, Tennessee. The blast damaged over 40 buildings, including AT&T’s Main Central Office and caused internet and cell outages across 1,200 zip codes for three days including the airport and EMS services. Published investigations by the ATF and FBI were inconclusive in determining the explosive composition and size. Video captured a large fireball that may indicate a fuel-air-mixture explosion which would create lower peak pressures than high explosives, but longer pressure duration and significant impulsive loading. Blast pressures were amplified by reflections in the urban environment bordered by the 8-story AT&T building and a row of multi-story historic buildings. Some structures had little damage as they were shielded from the blast pressure by closer buildings, and seemingly far-field structures contained damage from the pressure wave after multiple reflections and propagation through porous parking garages. Damage to the reinforced concrete frame AT&T building included snapped masonry ties, cracking and spall to the closest column, and vertical displacement of the elevator, even with the brakes applied. The historic structures directly across the street from the blast partially collapsed. Initial damage included complete failures of unreinforced masonry façades, broken timber beams, and uplifted roofs. Secondary, progressive collapse took place over months as the brick walls and weakened historic mortar could not resist typical wind and environment loads. One of the close historic structures was renovated in the 1990’s and structural retrofits to comply with building codes were required. The addition of steel columns and façade tie-ins improved survivability and it remained standing with a high percentage of the front brick intact. Generally, the observed blast damage was related to a structural component’s mass and flexibility. Internal timber framing was unscathed, but many steel studs required replacement. Glazing damage was observed several blocks away and many roof membranes were punctured by falling debris. Secondary damage from broken sprinkler lines and loss of environmental control often led to more costly repairs than the initial blast pressure damage. The proliferation of bomb-making knowledge leads to hundreds of bombings each year in the US. Building risk considerations should include explosive threats along with other hazards. ASCE structural standards and design manuals have been published to address these risks and may be useful guides for building construction.

A method for estimating geotechnical rock loads for shallow cut and cover subway stations is presented. Localized geotechnical conditions lead to extreme variations in rock loading on the walls of subway structures. Actual lateral rock stress on these structures can range from near zero to over four times the vertical in-situ rock stress. The primary factors affecting the actual lateral stress are intact and rock mass mechanical properties, excavation sequence, localized tectonic conditions, and potential future adjacent structures. The authors recommend using the AASHTO code value of 65 pounds per cubic foot (10 kN/m3) during concept design, followed by numerical analysis of rock wedges and stress measurement for final design.

Due to the worldwide population growth, the development of sustainable infrastructure and the exploration of renewable energies plays a key role to handle the rising megacity trends and to limit carbon footprint. Herrenknecht AG is a leading manufacturer of Tunnel Boring machines and has constantly endeavored through its extensive Research and Development programs to address limitations faced by the civil engineering industry as regards to construction equipment capabilities. New mechanized technologies, mainly coming from the tunnelling industry, have been developed by Herrenknecht AG as an efficient alternative to conventional civil engineering, where tailor-made concepts are required to comply with restricted conditions onsite. Very often this innovation led technology capability has meant making construction processes safer due to minimal human intervention and also far more productive due to higher performance as compared to other latest or conventional methods of construction. The rising need for even higher building structures and large-capacity bridges involve the development of innovative deep foundation technologies for on- and offshore operation. Conventional methods like bore piles reach their technical and economic limits under certain conditions. For building shafts and foundations, the mechanized Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine technology (VSM) from Herrenknecht AG is a proven innovation and has now been used in various onshore infrastructure projects worldwide to construct a total of 94 circular shafts in depths of up to 115 meters. It operates below the groundwater level, completely remote-controlled from the surface in a diameter range from 4.5 to 18 meters. Subsequently Herrenknecht noted that Offshore foundations, especially in non-drivable ground conditions such as soft and hard rock (e.g. limestone, sandstone, mudstone, granite etc. or soft soil with high density) and shallow continental shelf (water depth approx. 20-60m), presented construction challenges and equally an opportunity for building high performance equipment. The latter construction conditions usually requires drilled installation methods for applications such as harbor enlargements, bridge foundations and foundations for offshore wind turbines. The Offshore Foundation Drilling technology (OFD®) is Herrenknecht’s latest innovation, incorporating our learnings from the VSM and full-face Tunnel Boring machines, and the OFD® enables a rapid and economical offshore installation in such variable ground and rock conditions. This paper will discuss the technology behind the new mechanized technology of VSM and Herrenknecht’s latest innovation of the OFD® along with their respective application fields in foundations construction. AGGREGATE With an annual domestic production of over 1.6 billion tons at a value of over $2 billion (see Table 15.1.1), the production of aggregate (crushed rock, sand, and gravel) is a basic industry of utmost economic importance. Because of the role of aggregate materials as essential ingredients of concrete, asphalt surfacing, and plaster, their delivered prices are major factors in determining the cost of construction. The annual domestic production comes from nearly 10,000 plants. About 15% of these plants account for over one-half the production. In a rapidly inflating economy, the average mine sales price of aggregate has remained relatively stable. The actual mine sales prices, however, vary greatly depending on quarrying costs in various parts of the country. Of much more importance in construction costs, however, is the delivered price of aggregate. This varies for each job, depending on the distance from the quarry and resulting transportation costs, as well as the initial cost at the mine. Because of a proliferation of regulations limiting new quarries in the vicinity of the encroaching urban sprawl, the average distance which aggregate must be transported has been increasing rapidly. Although it is impossible to derive an average delivered cost for aggregate, it should be noted that even an increase of only $1 per ton in average delivered cost over the last decade (probably a minimal assumption) would mean an annual cost $1.5 billion higher than ten years ago. In recent years, structural engineering considerations, as well as an increasing use of lightweight concrete blocks, have resulted in a rapidly increasing demand for lightweight concrete and plaster, the essential ingredient of which is lightweight aggregate. Principal lightweight aggregates are: pumice, slag, perlite (thermally expanded hydrous volcanic glass), vermiculite, and expanded shale, formed by the thermal expansion of shale and slate. The United States now has the capacity to expand, annually, over 13 million tons of shale and slate and to expand over 600,000 tons of perlite. In locating a site for aggregate production. the following factors must be considered: (1) tonnage available; (2) quality of aggregate (including local variations); (3) distance from major use areas; (4) transportation costs, including those resulting from present and possible future haulage restrictions; (5) zoning regulations; (6) operating costs, including the cost effects of compliance with local regulations governing blasting, air pollution, water pollution and drainage, noise levels, and operating periods. At one time, locating a suitable site for the production of crushed rock, sand, or gravel, in most areas, was regarded as an extremely simple task. Prior to the merger of BHP and Billiton, both companies had a keenfocus on improving their performance in health, safety, environment and community (HSEC) matters. This shared intent, albeit executed insomewhat different ways, provided an excellent foundation for the newCompany. During the integration planning phase, a team was formed toconsider the organisational design for consistently achieving world class HSEC performance. The design included the policy platform, resources, structures, standards and procedures to be implemented in the merged entity. A key aspect of the design was the fully integrated HSECManagement Standards. These Standards create the framework for theconsistent application of BHP BillitonÆs HSEC Policy at all of ourmanaged operations across the world. The Standards have their origin in similar frameworks adopted by BHP during the 1990s, as well as thewell-known quality related standards (eg ISO 14001). However, they areunique in that they combine all aspects of HSEC management into asingle integrated set of auditable standards. By combining these areas and integrating our HSEC Management Standards with other aspects of the æBHP Billiton WayÆ, we are establishing a holistic, line management driven improvement approach. Over time, the BHP Billiton Way will embed a systematic improvement philosophy that we expect will become a key source of competitive advantage. The HSEC Management Standards are consistent with ISO 14001,OHSAS 18001, the Australian Minerals Industry Code for EnvironmentalManagement and generally aligned with SA8000. While compliance withthese external standards ensures that a systematic approach andimprovement plans are in place, BHP BillitonÆs HSEC Standards gofurther to include minimum performance requirements that reflect theintent of our HSEC Policy. Therefore, implementation at site levelensures that robust systems are in place to implement our Policy and that accreditation can be achieved to external standards if required.To assess implementation of the HSEC Management Standards anaudit system has been designed which incorporates both self-assessmentand peer review. Each site is required to undertake an annualself-assessment of compliance with the Standards using a commonassessment protocol. Every three years a peer review is conducted at each site to confirm the results of self-assessment and to provide a means of sharing knowledge throughout the Company. The review teams are composed of line managers and HSEC professionals from around theCompany, representatives of our joint venture partners and independentspecialists as required. The Company has committed to public reportingof the audit results through our annual HSEC report and this is reflected in our published targets. From a wider perspective, as we in the resources industry strive tocollectively raise our HSEC performance and reputation, there may be arole for industry based HSEC Management Standards complemented bya level of independent review.

The two HYFIFLUX cruises of the German RV SONNE (SO 99/1995 and SO 134/1998) were organized in the framework of a co-operation between several German universities and two European marine research partners. It is a multidisciplinary program for the study of hydrothermalism with its associated geological, mineralogical, and biological processes in the North Fiji Basin (NFB) in the SW-Pacific. The main achievements of the HYFIFLUX cruises were detailed multibeam Hydrosweep mapping in order to identify the detailed tectonic setting, water sampling at hydrothermally active vents, mineral sampling at inactive sites with sulfide, sulfate, and silica mineralizations, and sampling of basaltic rocks, (Halbach et al. 1999). Oceanic accretion in the NFB is characterized by a double spreading system (Auzende et al. 1994),with one spreading axis located in the median part of the basin (Central Fiji Ridge, CFR) and the second one located immediately west of the Fiji platform (West Fiji Ridge). Most of our investigations were done in the northern part of the N 15° segment of the CFR, which corresponds to area A of our program, area D is located farther south in the NFB and corresponds to the N-S segment of the CFR (Fig. 1). During previous works under the French-Japanese STARMER project, the active ?White Lady? mound and the extinct Père Lachaiseí site were sampled; these samples were studied by Bendel et al. 1993. Here an inactive hydrothermal field was studied, where there were many sediment-covered chimneys in various stages of disintegration, (Bendel et al. 1993). "The recycling of wastepaper has become an important and common process worldwide. Techniques similar to those used in the mineral processing industry are used to produce high quality recycled fibers for use in newsprint. The mineral processing group at McGill University in conjunction with the Pulp and Paper industry (Mechanical and Chemi-mechanical Wood Pulp Network) has adapted one of these techniques, column flotation, for the purpose of deinking wastepaper. This article describes the typical process of recycling wastepaper from a mineral processing point of view. It also presents results from McGill University's flotation column test work at a Quebec wastepaper recycling facility.IntroductionThe recycling of wastepaper has become an important and common process worldwide, including Canada which is now the world's largest importer of wastepaper (CPPA, 1996). Much of the current drive to increase the utilization rate of recovered paper is a reaction to the solid-waste disposal problem that faces many Canadian and U.S. municipalities. The real problem in the disposal of solid waste is not the absolute amount of garbage that must be disposed of each year but this amount in relation to available disposal capacity.Environmental restrictions on the creation of new landfill sites and incinerators (the two main options for disposal of municipal solid waste) have tightened the demand/supply balance in the solid waste disposal market. This shrinking availability of waste disposal sites in the face of increasing population with greater disposal requirements defines the Developed World's solid waste crisis. Not only are there fewer disposal sites available, but the costs of using them is skyrocketing. These factors have increased government regulations mandating recycled paper content in newsprint. Conservation and environmental issues make the current drive for wastepaper recycling a real issue and business opportunity.A key to the success of producing quality recycled fibers from wastepaper is the deinking technology. The production of tissue papers, paper towels and newsprint requires regenerated fibers which are substantially free of ink particles. Of the various options available, mineral processing techniques can offer the most economical, environmentally acceptable and versatile strategies (Yoon, 1993). Today, it is recognized that flotation is one of the most effective processes for removing ink particles in the production of a high quality product. In a collaborative program with the Pulp and Paper industry, the mineral processing group at McGill University has adapted column flotation technology for this purpose. This article will describe the typical process of deinking from a mineral processing point of view (Part A). It will also present some results from McGill University's flotation column test work at a nearby paper recycling facility (Part 8)."
