The Tropicana deposit was discovered in 2005 after AngloGold Ashanti followed up an unexplained gold-in-soil anomaly. Discovered in a remote, barely-explored area of Western Australia not previously thought prospective for gold, Tropicana is the most significant gold find in Australia for more than a decade. The new, large scale open pit gold mining operation will produce an annual production of around 330 000 to 400 000 oz over a ten year mine life mining around 60 Mt/a.Process plant construction started in early 2012 and is due to finish in the December 2013 quarter. The mining contract was awarded to Macmahon Holdings (Macmahon) and mining commenced in July 2012 using conventional drill and blast, truck and excavator open cut methods.As a construction and start-up project in a greenfields location, the establishment of mining activities at Tropicana Gold Mine (TGM) involves the implementation of technical and operational systems, including the mining contract. Some of these systems and likely challenges were identified during earlier studies, while others were not foreseen until they were encountered. Alternatively, the time frames around implementation change depending on the changing knowledge of the project and industry environment. These systems include those common to the industry and those specific to the operation and location.This paper examines the implementation and development of a number of the systems specific to the establishment of mining operations, including the history, process and some outcomes. Although expected to be discrete systems to implement, they become interdependent. Australian mines have traditionally relied on diesel powered vehicles to fulfil their light vehicle needs. There are many reasons for the resources industry to review its use of diesel-powered vehicles. The international industry has developed projects to explore the use of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) as a more sustainable alternative to traditional diesel-powered vehicles. While the technology for cost-effectively applying modern high-performance lithium-based batteries to the mining environment has existed for over a decade it is yet to be widespread throughout the industry. Through the collaboration of Safescape, 3ME Technology and Kirkland Lake Gold, with funding from Mining Equipment technology services (METS) Ignited, the project has focussed on advancing the Australian METS sector’s capability in the rapidly approaching implementation of BEV technology. This paper reports on the collaborative approach to develop a prototype vehicle; explains the selection criteria for the various components of the vehicle; and details the risk-based approach to developing a scalable product to replace existing underground light vehicle fleets. The prototype vehicle was tested underground at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville operations in Victoria beginning in October 2019. Reporting from these trials focusses on the key factors affecting underground operations. These include driveability, safety, charging and cycle times. Gathering data around energy consumption through normal daily duties enabled a model of energy consumption and charging requirements to be developed such that various applications of the electric vehicle can be considered against existing diesel-powered vehicles. This has provided insight into the impact on daily operations, and the way forward for large scale implementation.

The study refers to an area of about 70 km2, extended in the Italian Central Alps along the the San Giacomo Valley where different civil and mining works are present The regional geological setting is related to the Pennidic Nappe arrangement, characterized by the emplacement of sub-horizontal gneissic bodies resulting from the Mesoalpine isoclinalic folding of crystalline basements, emplaced throw East, and separated by matasedimentary cover units. The investigated geological rocks, belong to the ?Tambò?Unit, overlapped by its meta-sedimentary cover and by the ?Suretta? Unit. The tectonic contact gently dips to the E?NE. The valley, furrowed by the Liro Torrent, follows a N?S striking tectonic lineament, almost parallel to the nappe contact. A number of more then 70 sites, distributed in the studied area, were chosen and detailed structural and geomechanical field surveys were performed to characterize the rock masses, its intact rock and discontinuities. The procedure identifies the number of joint sets, their representative orientation, the set spacing, the type of movement, the amount of dilatation, the degree of alteration, the roughness coefficient, the presence and nature of infill. Rock mass quality indexes, such as the Rock Mass Rating (Bieniawski, 1989) or the Geological Strength Index (Hoek et al. 2002) have been evaluated in each surveyed site. The work is a contribute in assessing how the geometrical and geomechanical properties of the rock masses can be regarded as regionalized variables. The spatial distribution of these properties is a function of the geological and structural phenomena at which the rock masses have been subjected. The presented geostatistical analysis regards the spatial variation of the orientation of the most representative joint set.

"The focus of this paper is on the analysis of geometrical discontinuity properties for the rock mass located within an open pit mine located in Western Africa. Discontinuity data were collected using various techniques including oriented core logging, borehole televiewer surveys, surface pit wall mapping and photogrammetry. The geological setting was initially studied prior to the data analysis to produce threedimensional ground models of the regional and mine site geology along with block diagrams illustrating predicted fracture patterns. Stereographic and statistical discontinuity data analysis of the geometrical properties of the rock mass was subsequently performed to identify unique structural domains throughout the open pit area. The discontinuity data collected throughout the studied open pit area were primarily discontinuity orientation, frequency and spacing and the investigation focused on the reasons for observed differences between the various data collection techniques. Stereographic analysis was used to assess the preferred geometry of discontinuities filtered by lithology, data collection technique, borehole, discontinuity type and pit wall (footwall or hanging wall). The observed fracture pattern is explained adequately by the geological setting. The need for accurate ground models for the design of open pit slopes is highlighted.INTRODUCTIONThe Tasiast Mine is an open pit operation located in north-western Mauritania, approximately 300 kilometres north of the capital Nouakchott. The Tasiast mine, which is owned and operated by Kinross Gold Corporation (Kinross), began commercial operations in 2008. The Tasiast mine is located in an area characterized by flat desert terrain within the western reaches of the Sahara Desert region. The current mine site includes mill buildings, shop facilities, waste dumps, tailings facilities and two main open pit operations (Piment and West Branch). The West Branch pit is the focus of this paper. The current open pit plan for West Branch indicates a final pit measuring approximately 2.5 km long by 1.4 km wide and 510 m deep."

"The use of reverse circulation (RC) drilling for grade control sample collection was selected by the Pueblo Viejo Mine Geology department at the recommencement of the operation in 2010. This method was selected because it allows: for multi-bench drilling (60 m hole depth, four benches of mining) to aid mine planning and provide a detailed close spaced drill data comparison with the reserve model angled drill holes to optimise the drill hole interception of the vertically controlled mineralisation dry sample collection in areas of excessive surface and groundwater mining operations to commence with the long assay return period (due to the need for the samples to be shipped overseas for analysis) until the on-site laboratory is operational.To date, 118 302 m of drilling has been completed throughout the operations of two open pits: Monte Negro and Moore. Two drill rigs (contractor and site-owned and operated) with three generations of sampling systems have been used to date. Throughout the drilling a 20 per cent quality assurance, quality control (QAQC) sample check (blanks, field duplicates and standards) have been used to check the drilling and laboratories performance. In addition, a total of 1104 fines samples were collected to compare the drill chip samples collected and the fines lost with two of the sample systems used.The drilling to date has highlighted the need for a complete and coordinated system to be used before sufficient confidence in the quality of the samples collected is achieved.The complete system must be set-up and coordinated to obtain the best quality sample possible. This complete package includes: drill bit size and shape for the rock being drilled and mineralisation targeted face sampling hammers with the correctly sized hammer shrouds sample hose routing to reduce sample flow turbulence and choking blow-down valves to eliminate drill hole water that has entered the drill string during rod changes correct drilling techniques targeting sample quality a sample system that captures the fines for inclusion into the sample.These improvements can be obtained without reducing the drilling rates.The measurements required to demonstrate the improvement in the sample quality will be the focus of future work within the department.CITATION:Goers, M and Almond, M, 2012. The PHX Sky Train is an automated people mover system located at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Phase II of the PHX Sky Train includes the design of over 150 drilled shafts for support of four guideway abutments, 75 guideway piers and three proposed stations. The soil conditions in this area generally consist of alluvial Sand, Gravel and Cobbles (locally known as SGC) deposited by the nearby Salt River. The foundation system will support relatively high axial loads, lateral loads and moments due to the height of the elevated guideway above the ground surface, where it needs to pass over roadways, parking lots, an existing terminal, and other buildings. Deep foundation design involves designing drilled shafts within the SGC deposits, some of which extend below the long-term groundwater table. Such extreme design loading conditions, together with difficult ground conditions at the site, result in several challenges for the design and construction of the deep foundation system for the project. This paper will present the results of a drilled shaft load test program implemented to provide site-specific measurement of the axial and lateral performance of the project drilled shafts. The load testing program consisted of a bi-directional load cell axial load test and a lateral load test performed on an instrumented test shaft 84 inches in diameter. The development and execution of the load test program and analysis of the test results are discussed. Comparisons were developed between predicted load capacities of drilled shafts using different design methodologies and the load capacity measured from the load tests. The load test results showed that underestimation of the capacity is evident using conventional methodologies. The load testing program was important for verifying the performance of the drilled shaft foundations on the project and was used to reduce the size of the drilled shafts. INTRODUCTION The PHX Sky Train is a five-mile long automated people mover system situated at-grade and on an elevated guideway which connects terminals, parking facilities, a rental car center and the Valley Metro Light Rail system in Phoenix. The purpose of this automated train system is to provide a secondary transportation system within the airport to relieve roadway congestion, minimize wait times and travel times for passengers and provide climate-controlled waiting areas. Phase 1 opened to the public on April 8, 2013. Phase 1A opened on December 8, 2014.

Underground mine development begins with the positive investment decision to mine and ends with the inception of full-scale exploitation. It incorporates all activities, personnel, and equipment required for creation of underground access to a mineral deposit. Because of the depletion of near-surface mineral resources, the reduced mobility of large surface mining equipment, increasingly stringent environmental constraints, and the introduction of promising innovations to rock penetration and rock excavating equipment (e.g., continuous miners, rock borers), under-ground mining is projected to account for an increased share of worldwide mineral production in the foreseeable future. Without proper engineering during the mine development phase, failure of the underground mining project is axiomatic. A frustration attendant to coverage of the complex area of underground mine development lies not only with the need for treatment of the many disparate specialties within the area but even with the lack of systematization of these specialties in what is recognized as a vital precursor to successful mining. Reconciliation at large iron ore operations is a complex and time- consuming process. Often the volume of data and the large range of different stakeholders makes the process almost impossible. Up until recently geologists and engineers at these operations would spend hours cutting and pasting data in and out of monster spreadsheets, diligently comparing how resource/reserve models, grade control and survey pick-ups compare to what was actually produced. In 2003 the Sishen Iron Ore Mine in South Africa broke this cycle by implementing SnowdenÆs Reconcilor software. The implementation of a dedicated reconciliation system required a number of existing practices to be changed, with the involvement of stakeholders right across the mine. Data sources had to be clarified and validated, terminology had to be standardised, processes needed to be documented and some methodologies needed to be updated. This was a task that required significant effort by Kumba personnel so that the system could be successfully implemented. This paper provides a case study of the reconciliation system implementation at Sishen. It is a story of an operation that evolved from using a number of fragmented reconciliation processes to using a unified automated system. This paper outlines the key estimates and measurements that are used for reconciliation, details the characteristics of an automated web-based information management system to facilitate the process and provides some insights about the benefits that have been gained though the use of a rigorous reconciliation process.

ABSTRACT The options for reducing the carbon footprint of energy use in mining fall into three categories of activity: i) reducing demand, ii) improving energy utilization, and iii) adopting low carbon energy technologies. In addition to the environmental imperative, the economic case for these activities gains higher priority as the prices of electricity, gas, and liquid fuels increase. Low-carbon, energy-saving technology options that are available to mining industry companies lead to projects with return rates that must compete alongside other capital-intensive projects considered by mining company boards. Energy projects frequently involve longer payback periods and lower rates of return than those of competing bids for capital, such as new mineral property developments. For energy services companies that specialize in the financing, construction, efficient operation, and maintenance of energy projects, the same returns and payback periods can be considered acceptable or even attractive.

Over the last six years Mandalay Resources has increased production rates and improved safety outcomes at its Costerfield mine in Victoria, Australia. This mine is an underground operation utilising narrow mining techniques to extract vertical veins, and produces up to 80 000 equivalent ounces of gold per annum, in both gold and antimony value.The operational challenges of narrow vein mining include controlling overbreak when veins being mined are only 300 mm wide. The mine has developed methods and modified equipment to suit extraction of these veins. Productivity improvements over the period have involved development of a stoping method and equipment to suit 1.8 m wide development drives. Over the last five years and during a skills shortage, recruitment, training and retention of personnel has been key to keeping corporate knowledge and skills to execute a careful efficient mining technique to minimise overbreak.Managing an underground operation close to nearby residents has unique challenges. Historically Victorian residents had family members work as underground miners; however, in the current day with few underground operations in this jurisdiction, community knowledge of mining has decreased. The Costerfield Operations are only 100 m from the nearest residence and the company values community engagement, partnership and investment with local Heathcote organisations.The mine has invested substantially in executive coaching of its leadership team early, which has paid dividends in problem solving potential of that team and ensuring the operation delivers on its promises to all stakeholders. The operation has become safer and employees are now more aware of their individual contribution in producing safe, efficient gold and antimony that benefit the whole operation, community and the region.CITATION:McCarthy, M, 2016. Onsite hazardous waste processors often find obtaining a Treatment Storage and Disposal (TSD) permit one of their first major challenges. Some processors may spend the time and money required by the permitting process, only to find out later that a permit was not necessary. This paper will present and analyze four strategies that processors may use to avoid obtaining a TSD permit. Some facilities will be able to remove their waste streams from RCRA's oversight by ensuring the material is not "hazardous" waste. Parties that treat waste while it is in process may be able to avoid generating "waste" altogether. Certain treatment facilities have been specifically exempted by EPA. Finally, treatment of waste while it is in generator storage tanks may be allowed without a RCRA TSD permit. Hazardous waste point of generation, an important determination relating to these strategies, will also be discussed. "In beneficiation process, metal ions could adsorb onto clay mineral surfaces or interact with flotation chemicals, and then result in the flotation behavior changing of desired minerals. Al(III) is the dominating ion existing in the bauxite flotation system. In this research, the adsorption behaviors of Al(III) on two silicate clay minerals (including bentonite and kaolin) were investigated by means of UV-Vis spectra, zeta potential testing and scanning electron micrograph analysis. The adsorption experiment results show that the adsorption capacity of clays for Al(III) ions increases with the initial Al(III) concentration, contact time and solution pH. There are some different adsorption behaviours for two clays. Increasing the clay concentration decreases the adsorption capacity of bentonite, while increases first then decreases for kaolin. Higher temperature favours the adsorption of Al(III) on bentonite but goes against for kaolin. The adsorption capacities of bentonite and kaolin for Al(III) respectively reach 12.48 and 0.875 mg/g at initial solution pH 5. Zeta potential results show that the adsorption of Al(III) on two clays is characterized by electrostatic attraction mechanism.INTRODUCTIONIn beneficiation process, there is inevitably a wide variety of metal ions generated from mineral crushing, mineral dissolution and water chemistry conditions. Metal ions adsorb on the mineral surfaces or interact with the beneficiation agents, affecting the flotation efficiency of desired minerals (DiFeo et al., 2001; Parolis et al., 2008; Shackleton et al., 2012; Shengo et al., 2014). Therefore, it is necessary to have a detailed investigation on the adsorption behaviour of metal ions on clay minerals.Having good ion exchange capacity and negative surface charge, the clay minerals could take up various metal ions from the mineral-water system. Bentonite and kaolin are very common aluminosilicate clays in the mineral processing system. These two clays both hold a permanent negative charge, =X- on the basal surfaces, and a smaller variable charge, =SiOH on the mineral edges (Gu & Evans, 2008; (Gu et al., 2010). Adsorption experiments are usually used to study the adsorption affinity of metal ions for clay minerals (Sen & Bhattacharyya, 2012). The adsorption of Zn(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) onto natural bentonite showed that the adsorption amounts of metal ions increase with contact time, solution pH and metal ion concentration, but decreases with adsorbent concentration and system temperature (Sen & Gomez, 2011; Melichova & Hromada, 2013). Cr(III) adsorption on bentonite was significantly pH dependent. The adsorption process followed pseudo-second-order model and the equilibrium adsorption was consistent with Freundlich isotherm (Lollino et al., 2015). The adsorption behaviours of Pb(II), Cd(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) onto kaolin indicated that increasing pH favoured the adsorption of metal ions (Jiang et al., 2010). The adsorption of Cd(II), Cu(II), Pb(II) and Zn(II) onto kaolin showed that an ion-exchange reaction occurred at pH<7.0 and inner-sphere surface complexes were prone to form at higher pH (Srivastava et al., 2005)."

The Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI) was initiated in 1995 by federal agencies, the National Mining Association (NMA) and the Interstate Mining Compact Commission (IMCC) to identify, evaluate and develop cost-effective and practical acid drainage technologies. In 1999, ADTI was expanded through the addition of the metal mining sector, which is focused on drainage quality issues related to metal mines. ADTI addresses drainage quality issues from abandoned, active, and future coal and metal mines. The guiding principle of ADTI is to build consensus among industry, federal and state regulatory agencies on acid drainage technology development and technology transfer issues. ADTI is focusing its efforts on mine drainage prediction, sampling/monitoring, modelling and avoidance/remediation. ADTI is not a regulatory or policy development program. ADTI includes the Coal Mining Sector (CMS) and the Metal Mining Sector (MMS) under the overall guidance of the ADTI Operations Committee. The Operations Committee consists of representatives from industry, state and federal government and academia. The Coal Mining Sector includes two committees; a prediction committee and an avoidance and remediation committee. The Metal Mining Sector includes steering committee and work groups on prediction, sampling and monitoring, modelling, mitigation, and pit lakes. The Coal Mining Sector has produced two publications on the prediction and prevention of acid drainage. The Metal Mining Sector has workbooks under preparation covering the work group topics. This past winter, the Metal Mining Sector, working with the US Bureau of Land Management, presented a satellite training session on acid drainage. ADTI has evolved in response to changing needs and technologies as evidenced by the addition of the Metal Mining Sector in 1999. The Operations Committee and the members of the Coal and Metal Mining Sectors will guide future direction in response to identified issues.

The work in this paper describes the theory, development and analysis of a computer model simulating a mine operation moving material using concurrent decline ramp truck haulage and skipping practices. This simulation was designed specifically to assess the performance of the truck haulage component and to expand on the scope and capabilities of traditional TKM fleet calculations. Haulage fleet simulation results were similar to TKM calculations for the lower to moderate production rate cases. However, comparisons of ramp-up and high production rate scenarios indicated that the simulation model was significantly more sensitive to operating practices and factors not accounted for by calculations derived when using a single TKM figure. Given the proper calibration of inputs and logic, the simulation model was additionally capable of providing information associated with general mine operations efficiency. Further benefits of the simulation model over a TKM approach included logistical assessments such as production schedule feasibility, productivity trade-off quantifications for proposed operating practices, and the validation of mine resource utilization scheduling. The simulation model was able to expand on traditional methods to approach planning and logistics by considering factors such as truck queuing, real-time traffic interactions, random events, and competition for resources on mine productivity.

"Over the last 10 years, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) has had a very active program of replacing many major bridges, large structures spanning the Mississippi River. The deep foundations for these new structures include both drilled shafts and large diameter open-ended driven steel pipe piles. Most of these projects included load tests, both axial and lateral.The geology of this area of Minnesota includes some interesting foundation challenges, including highly organic and compressible very soft silts and clays to very dense sand and gravel overlying sedimentary bedrock. In some cases scour requires embedment into rock, and the bedrock formations may range from very soft sandstone to very hard dolostone. Artesian groundwater conditions can sometimes complicate drilled shaft construction, but the rock is otherwise very favorable for drilled shafts. Experience with the open-ended driven steel pipe piles (typically 42 and 48 in, 1.07 and 1.2 m diameter) suggest that these piles most often penetrate even dense granular materials to achieve bearing on rock. Experiences with drilled shafts socketed into the soft sandstones demonstrate that these rocks provide very favorable conditions for drilled shafts, so long as suitable construction practices are followed. Here we present several recent case histories regarding the foundation design and construction of major bridge projects in the vicinity of Minneapolis, Minn., including the Wakota Bridge, the I-35W replacement, the Lafayette Bridge, the Hastings Bridge and the St. Croix Bridge. Some lessons learned from construction and load testing of both types of foundations are described along with implications for design in similar soil and rock conditions."

This paper tells the story of the rapid commercial application of stirred milling technology at Anglo American Platinum?s many Concentrators. The first stirred mill ? a 10 000 litre IsaMillTM; the largest at the time, was commissioned in late 2003. The project development work was presented at SAG 2001. This operation was ?proof of concept? and vindicated the decision to scale up the technology; allowing a rapid and extensive roll-out of mainstream regrind mills as well as several further flotation concentrate regrind mills, over the next six years. Currently 23 stirred mills are in operation with 64 MW of installed drive capacity ? this paper describes the projects? roll-out and the significant results achieved to date. Many operational problems have been solved along the way, some of these will be described. The introduction of the technology has seen a step change in metallurgical results and progressively decreasing operating costs.

Abstract. This paper puts forward the concept of &apos;radial&apos; plant layout where all crushing, milling and treatment operations are preferably concentrated in one central area and these separate stages are connected by radiating conveyors to and from outside storage areas. This system is contrasted to the more customary system of &apos;linear&apos; plant layout where the crushing, milling and often the treatment operations follow one after the other in separate buildings. The radial system simplifies and improves contral and supervision to a very considerable extent and can lead to a form of continuous plant operation with the separate sectors shutting down in succession for necessary maintenance while maintaining the overall plant operation. The paper is illustrated with example: from past and recent diamond treatment plant practice in South Africa which demonstrate the reduction in plant labour achieved by this system. Previous objection to this type of layout on the grounds that it inhibited plant expansion are shown to be unwarranted. Radial Layout for Increased Treatment Plant Productivity A great deal of time and trouble is spent by highly qualified and experience( metallurgists in developing the right treatment process for a given ore. This process is then often expressed in a treatment flowsheet of the type shown in Fig. 1 which shows a typical diamond plant. This flowsheet, when completed, is commonly handed over to the mechanical engineers who then design the layout of the equipment indicated on the flowsheet and produce the working drawings upon which the detailed construction of the treatment plant will be based. It is an unfortunate fact that the tedious and time-consuming juggling of equipment and inter-plant transportation is often left to hard-working draughtsmen who, however capable&apos; in their field, lack practical experience in the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the treatment plants they design. As a result many plants have been produced which, while they satisfy the requirements of the flowsheet with minimum capital requirements, cost far more than should be necessary to op¬erate and maintain. It is often possible to change individual items of equipment which do not achieve the performance required of them, but it is usually extremely expensive to change the basic layout of the plant if this should be found to be unsatisfactory. It should therefore be recognised that great care and attention should be spent on consideration of the basic layout of any treatment plant and that the views of both designers and operators should be fully regarded before settling upon the inevitable compromise dictated by the varying requirements of process-engineering and economics. It is unfortunate that this important subject receives such scant regard in the standard ore dressing text books and hand-books, being usually dismissed in a few paragraphs.

The Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel will ensure system reliability in the event of a major earthquake and increase the Greater Vancouver Water District’s capacity to meet a growing population’s longterm needs. It includes a bored tunnel between two deep shafts located in North Vancouver and Burnaby, BC, Canada. The support of excavation for the 16-meter-diameter (52.5 ft) TBM launch shaft consists of 83-meter-deep (272 ft) unreinforced concrete slurry walls. This paper discusses challenges encountered during construction of the launch shaft slurry walls, namely excavation methods and slurry loss, and mitigative solutions implemented to successfully complete the shaft with minimal impact to project schedule.

In 2014 the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) awarded a Design-Build contract to the joint venture team consisting of Skanska which is the managing partner; Kiewit Corporation and Ecco III (SKE) and HNTB as the lead design firm. The design build team employed methods to provide schedule savings and commercial benefits to the owner NYSDOT. This paper presents the design approach and construction methods used to accelerate drilled shaft installation supporting the main span foundation for the cable stayed bridge. The drilled foundation contractor Underpinning and Foundation Skanska, a division of Skanska was responsible for assisting with design, budgeting and construction of the drilled shaft foundation construction. As part of the Request for Proposal (RFP) bid process, Alternate Technical Concepts (ATC) was encouraged by the NYSDOT. The JV team proposed an ATC which involved a scaled production shaft testing method to simulate the ultimate load level, commonly referred to as the “Chicago Method” was used in the rock socket employing the Osterberg Cell (O-Cell) testing procedures. To the authors knowledge this was the first NYSDOT project where this approach was utilized on a Demonstration/Production installation to validate construction procedures and load bearing capacities. Construction procedures, challenges and solutions are discussed in detail. Upon completion of successful drilled shaft construction, concrete integrity is verified using two methods – Cross Hole Sonic Logging (CSL) and Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP). A comparison from the contractor’s perspective is provided. Finally the drilled shaft rock socket is tested to ultimate end bearing values while rock socket side shear stresses are not exceeding the service level loading. Lateral load test was also a RFP requirement; the test arrangement and performance are discussed in detail as well. The Kosciuszko Bridge location poised unique geotechnical challenges on many levels shifting towards an extreme boundary of parameters encountered in New York City Area for drilled shaft construction. The JV team and specialty drilled shaft contractor actively participating in the shaft design and construction practice coordination and working with NYSDOT yielded a successful foundation solution which provided cost and schedule savings to the project.
