Dual Tube Reverse Circulation (DTRC) drilling has been extensively used for collecting groundwater information for the dewatering program at Amax Gold Inc. Sleeper Mine. This paper presents a discuss ion of the types of data which can be collected from DTRC drilling, as well as the effect submergence has on the data. A simple low-cost method of injection testing has been developed using DTRC equipment, allowing quantitative data to be obtained from exploration or test holes. Potential yields can be determined for each drill location, allowing siting and design of production wells to be optimized.

"Premature failure of rock bolts has been recorded at twelve underground coalmines over the past 15 years in Australia. Over the last four years, UNSW Australia has been conducting an Australian Research Council (ARC) and Industry funded linkage research project into premature failure of rock bolts. The extent of the problem was investigated by underground surveys of mines with known prematurely failed bolts using visual mapping, non-destructive load and ultrasound testing. A major component of this project was to define the environmental factors responsible for corrosion of rock bolts. The environment to which a rock bolt is exposed will include groundwater chemistry, the mineralogy of the strata, atmosphere within the drill hole and even microbial activity. This paper focuses on the groundwater survey and analysis findings to date along with in-hole bolt corrosion coupons installed into field sites. Corrosivity classification systems exist for general corrosion but do not apply to the rock bolt stress corrosion cracking (SCC) problem found in Australian underground coal. The method of in situ investigations is leading towards the building of a corrosivity classification model to assist mines in prediction of premature rock bolt failure. This paper will present the results of an analysis of several abandoned coal mine projects and includes field data for over a dozen different reclamation projects recently completed in the state of West . Virginia. The analysis was performed with the objective of summarizing and or classification of the environmental consequences with reference to the characteristics of the mining facilities (surface, underground, etc.). The analysis also addressed the itemized cost of remediation with respect to procedures, environmental concerns and time. The results of the analysis are that each abandoned coal mine site in West Virginia have/had many unique features and in most cases include a combination of environmental concerns that complicate comparisons. The study also revealed that the abandoned mine land program for mines abandoned prior to 1977 that is being financed by a tax on the production of coal, has produced many benefits for the state of West Virginia. This grant program administered by the Office of Surface Mining, has resulted in a high quality methodology of remediation that has been successful for many years in greatly minimizing and/or eliminating environmental concerns from abandoned coal mines.

"From paving the way in gaining approval for the first metalliferous in-pit tailings storage facility (TSF) in Victoria, to developing a deposition methodology to optimise the storage capacity and provide a final rehabilitated surface which replicates the premining topography, in-pit tailings storage has proven not only to be a cost-effective means for tailings management at Fosterville Gold Mine, but also one which provides significant economic, social and environmental benefits. Coupled with ongoing raising of the existing above ground TSF and commissioning of a new above ground TSF, Fosterville Gold Mine have to date effectively used three open pits for in-pit tailings storage, with one of the pits currently progressing through the capping and vegetation establishment phases of closure.This paper presents the process adopted by Fosterville Gold Mine in their flotation tailings management, from design and operational phases through to rehabilitation implementation. Included within the paper are challenges which have arisen during the process, and a discussion on principals behind the designs and lessons learnt during operation of the facilities.Citation:Gray, L P, 2016. Sun Metals Corporation Pty Ltd (SMC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Korea Zinc Co Ltd (KZC) is a company formed to develop, construct and operate a zinc refinery, 11 km south of Townsville in North Queensland. The project opportunity exists because of on-going consumption growth for refined zinc metal, technological, environmental and economic obsolescence of existing zinc processing plants, and a prolonged ædroughtÆ of new zinc processing capacity under construction. The Project will utilise proven technology developed by KZC at the Onsan refinery in Korea. The Townsville Refinery has been designed to be the most environmentally-friendly zinc refinery in the world, and in particular to resolve the issue of secure, long term treatment of the ironbearing content of the zinc raw materials.

Hillgrove, situated on the New England plateau of New South Wales, is an area rich in history and resources. Key resources are predominantly antimony, gold and scheelite and the area surrounding the historical field is environmentally sensitive and topographically challenging. Since acquiring the Hillgrove leases, Straits Hillgrove Gold has undertaken a significant exploration program on these historical mining areas with the goal to return the field to production. This exploration program has enabled Straits to significantly increase the resource base and has subsequently enabled the planned redevelopment of Hillgrove to be realised. In October 2006, installation of mining infrastructure and the initial stripping of existing development had commenced. To successfully redevelop Hillgrove, Straits has had to adopt a highly mechanised, trackless, diesel mining operation which will see the production rate commence at an initial rate of 250 kt/a of ore from a narrow vein environment. This ore will be processed on site to produce antimony metal, gold bullion and a scheelite concentrate.

The Silvermines area of north County Tipperary in Ireland has experienced mining activity for over a thousand years, with lead, zinc, copper, barite and sulphur being extracted from a series of Carboniferous limestones. The last mine to operate in the area was closed in 1993. A legacy of contamination and derelict surface structures remain. Following the death of cattle in the vicinity in 1999, a governmental Inter-Agency Group was established to conduct an investigation. The ?Silvermines Rehabilitation Project? resulted, and included a proposal for the development of a Mine Waste Management Facility (MWMF) to act as a repository for waste materials from problematic sites across the area. The nature of the setting supported an effective solution from both a cost and performance perspective; and with limited maintenance requirements. Locating the MWMF where most wastes were identified would help minimise handling and relocation of materials. This position coincided with an area of artesian groundwater pressures. The resulting MWMF design consisted of a perimeter engineered embankment with the crest elevation designed to just exceed the groundwater piezometric surface. The base would remain unlined and groundwater permitted to rise up into and saturate the contained in-situ tailings deposits and imported mine wastes. The proposed system thus benefited from the ?wet cover? approach to minimising further oxidation of wastes and metal leaching, but without the usual accompanying outward hydraulic gradient and leachate management issues. A sub cap drainage layer with downstream outlet was incorporated to prevent any possibility of hydraulic rupture following an unexpected rise in groundwater heads. Leakage rates from the MWMF were deemed to essentially be driven by surface infiltration rates alone (characteristic of a ?dry cover? approach), with the proposed composite capping system simulated to perform at an infiltration rate of less than 1 mm per year. A toe drain was incorporated with the perimeter containment system, and this collection together with diverted neighbouring drainage was directed under gravity to a dedicated Passive Treatment System (PTS). Overall, effluent water quality from the PTS has been predicted to reflect an annual mass metals removal in the order of 95% below baseline.

The current boom being experienced by mining, coupled with a shortage of professionals, will mean those in the industry will have many choices. It may be easy to become carried away and run with the highest bid or the biggest promise. Without planning, however, the ærightÆ opportunity may be missed and there may be some long-term consequences. There are many choices of paths in the industry to suit work preferences, life cycles and to achieve a balanced life. People in mining have changed jobs and companies frequently û which means new leaders need to take greater responsibility in charting their own direction. Career options need to be carefully assessed and aligned to personal values and preferences. Emphasis is given on gaining site experience early on.This paper examines strategies for career planning, which incorporate life cycles, education and what is meant by a balanced lifestyle. Two tools are identified as being helpful in ensuring strategies can be successfully executed. They are ævisioningÆ and æinfluenceÆ.To make the mining industry more attractive, we need more creative solutions around advances in technology and organisation of work. It also needs the input and leadership of new entrants in to the industry to assist in its survival. New leaders are encouraged to voice a vision and effectively influence their companies. New leaders have little authority and need to learn how to effectively influence. We as a mining industry need to listen, be open-minded and give it a go.

"CANADA HAS A GREATER LAKE AREA than any other country. Discountin the Great Lakes, this fresh-water area, mainly in the Canadian Shield, is listed as approximately 300,000 sq. mi. Densities of lakes range up to 7,500 in a 5,294-sq. mi. area of the Shield, southwest of Reindeer Lake, Saskatchewan. Five areas chosen randomly from the Shield (Figure 1) contained sufficient lakes to provide samples at a density of at least one per 10 sq. mi. Regional geochemical surveys in the Appalachian area (Nova Scotia, Boyle et al., 1958; New Brunswick, Boyle et al., 1966) and in the Cordilleran area (Yukon, Gleeson, 1965) of Canada and in many other areas of the world have relied heavily on analyses of stream sediments. These surveys show that sampling of material related to the drainage system reflects the over-all trace element content of the rocks and surficial deposits in the drainage basin. In the Shield, the classic types of dendritic (and other) stream systems found elsewhere in the world are very rare. However, impeded and disorganized stream systems that abound with lakes can provide the exploration geochemist with an ideal composite drainage system sample in the form of lake sediment. This paper attempts to demonstrate the feasibility of, and review the theory and problems involved in, the use of lake sediment as a regional geochemical exploration medium. Most of the references to field examples are taken from a regional survey using lake bottom sediment as the sample medium over 1,500 sq. mi of the Coppermine basalt group and adjacent rocks (Figure 2). During this regional survey, detailed sampling of several lakes was carried out and the results are referred to at appropriate places in the text."

The innovative Soil-Cement Mixed Wall Technique emerged in Japan and obtained recognition in the engineering and construction communities in the 1980's. This technique was introduced to the United States in 1986. It was accepted as the most credible construction technique by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation for ground stabilization and cutoff wall work in the Jackson Lake Dam Project, Wyoming in 1987 and 1988. It was also accepted as a remediation technique by U.S. EPA for a Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) demonstration on in-situ solidification/ stabilization. The Soil-Cement Mixed Wall Technique consists of mixing in-place soils with cement grout or other reagent slurries using multiple axis augers and mixing paddles to construct overlapped soil-cement columns. The overlapped column panel is then extended to form an underground continuous soil-cement wall for use as a cutoff wall or a structural diaphragm wall for groundwater control and excavation support. By arranging the column panels in various configurations, the technique becomes a versatile tool for stabilization of soft or liquefiable soils.

"Hydrogen induced failure and degradation in structural metals, namely hydrogen embrittlement, has been a long-standing industrial problem for more than one century and remains unsolved. Despite the proposal of numerous models, no consensus has been reached, and considerable discrepancies in experimental observations and theoretical calculations exist. One aspect that is central to the understanding of hydrogen embrittlement is the interaction between hydrogen and grain boundaries. In this study, we investigated the influence of several solute elements (i.e., Cr, Mo and Nb) on hydrogen segregation at the representative 9 grain boundary using first-principles calculations. Our results showed that the presence of Mo and Nb can reduce the tendency of hydrogen segregation at grain boundaries, while meanwhile enhance the grain boundary strength. This indicates that Mo and Nb are salutary elements that can be used to increase the material’s resistance to hydrogen embrittlement, providing new insights in designing hydrogen embrittlement resistant Ni alloys. INTRODUCTION Hydrogen embrittlement (HE), a phenomenon of hydrogen triggering premature failures in structural metals, has been a headache for industries ever since its first discovery one century ago (Johnson, 1874; Zhou, Marchand, McDowell, Zhu, & Song, 2016; Zhou, Ouyang, Curtin, & Song, 2016). It is well accepted that the segregation of hydrogen at microstructures such as grain boundaries (GBs) plays a key role in determining the occurrence and severity of HE. GBs are two-dimensional defects where significant local lattice distortion exist, which leads to large free volume and thus locations for hydrogen trapping and segregation. Numerous works have clarified GBs as the energetically preferable places for hydrogen segregation. For instance, Geng et al. demonstrated the preferential segregation of hydrogen at the S5(120) GB in several metals, and suggested a decohesion-type of HE in light of Rice-Wang thermodynamic theory (Geng, Freeman, & Olson, 2001). Birnbaum et al. illustrated that complete intergranular crack of Ni GBs can be induced by hydrogen segregation when the hydrogen concentration is sufficiently high, evidencing the significant role of hydrogen accumulation on GB weakening (Lassila & Birnbaum, 1987). Yamaguchi et al. demonstrated strong segregation hydrogen also occurs at S3 GBs in alpha-iron, showing that local hydrogen clustering (i.e., multiple hydrogen atoms, up to six, per unit cell) can be trapped at the S3 GB (Yamaguchi, Kameda, Ebihara, Itakura, & Kaburaki, 2012)."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines inventoried Federal mineral lands in Idaho and classified them in detail, section by section, according to their availability for mineral exploration and development as affected by legal restrictions and agencies' management practices. The Bureau also identified known mineral deposit areas (KMDAs) and areas conducive to oil, gas, and geothermal resources. This information is shown on maps (developed in part by geographic information system technology) that spatially compare the availability for mineral entry of Federal land with these KMDAs to demonstrate the extent and severity of restrictions on mineral entry. Idaho contains 53.1 million acres, 35.7 million (67%) of which is Federal mineral land. About 7 million acres of this land is within KMDAs that host medium-to high-value locatable mineral deposits; 36% of this land is available, 27% is slightly to moderately restricted, and 37% is severely restricted or unavailable. For the leasable minerals, about 1.8 million acres are within KMDAs that host medium-to high-value phosphate deposits, about 5.4 million acres are favorable for oil and gas resources, and 3.9 million acres for geothermal resources. The percentages of land availability are 30%, 45%, and 25% for the phosphate acreage, 38%, 34%, and 28% for the oil and gas acreage, and 43%, 30%, and 27% for the geothermal acreage.

The heightened concern over the environment which has developed in recent years has caused activities on National Forest lands to come under more intense public scrutiny. This has been especially true for activities oriented toward the production of commodities. Cattle grazing, mining, timber harvesting, and oil and gas leasing and drilling have all been increasingly subject to appeal and litigation. As a result, environmental analyses being conducted by the Forest Service have become more comprehensive, and measures to reduce or eliminate adverse impacts on resources have been given more attention. The costs of such environmental mitigation measures can be significant even when viewed in the context of the millions of dollars a company may spend, for example, to develop a mine. Using the Montanore Project in northwestern Montana as a case study, this paper examines the costs of alleviating some of the detrimental effects which may occur as a result of a mining operation. Although many of the general issues that have been raised about Montanore are common to other mineral projects, the scale of the project, as well as the fact that the ore body is within a wilderness area, the site is in grizzly bear habitat, and the surface waters are considered to be pristine, all combine to make Montanore particularly challenging from an environ- mental standpoint. Much of the information which follows is contained in the most recent version of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) which is scheduled to be published in several weeks. Based on agency and public comments, some of the information presented in the paper will change before the Final Environmental Impact Statement is issued in 1991.

"This report presents the physical properties and related geological and petrographic data of some 84 rock types from operating mines, quarries, or blasting research test sites. These fundamental rock data were collected as a quantitative approach to underground mining problems, blasting research, or other related studies; however, the data are equally applicable to any problem wherein rock characteristics are important factors. Stress-strain curves are given where available, and the standardized procedure for determining elastic constants from static tension tests is described. Computed (laboratory) and measured (field) free-medium velocities are compared in those instances where such data are available. A chart is given showing both the optimum and minimum number of test specimens for the various core sizes employed in the Bureau of Mines standardized physical-property tests. Rock-type, geographical, and geological indexes are included to aid the reader in locating physical-property data in this and previously published Bureau of Mines physical-property reports.INTROD'OCTI ONThis report presents the physical properties of 84 rock types tested from 16 different projects (sections 37-52). The paper outlines the successful application of some of the on-belt technologies available from Scantech International Pty Ltd and how these have provided benefits in a number of mining and mineral processing operations. Effective process control requires real time analysis so quality can be fed back to the previous process and fed forward to a subsequent process. A range of on-belt analysers that allows for full stream, continuous, non-contact analysis of conveyed materials is available to achieve this. Real time results can provide timely information for effective process control. Benefits of on-belt analysis systems become more evident once the true variability of material quality and moisture content in conveyed flows is measured. To obtain economies of scale in mineral processing operations large material flows are achieved using conveyors. The cost and effort to sample representatively increases as conveyor flows increase. One sample may represent a few tonnes or up to 10 000 tonnes of material. The turnaround time between sampling and availability of sample analysis data does not allow real time process control. Tonnage flow rate, moisture content and elemental or mineralogical composition are required to perform effective process control of most conveyed streams. Tonnages can be effectively measured using belt weighers. The analyses derived from small samples supplied by conveyor-based sampling systems contain high variability. On-belt, continuous analysers see all the material and, through short term compositing of analyses, supply less variable results. Real time analysis helps operators develop a better understanding of material variability. Analysers can be effectively utilised to improve the consistency of product quality through bulk sorting and blending control. Many existing users of the technologies have gained competitive advantages through their ability to supply a more consistent quality product to the market.

Introduction In presenting this paper on the water-power resources of the Province of Manitoba, it was considered that a brief resume of the power resources of Canada, of the power already developed, and its utilization in the industries 9f the country, would be of particular interest in showing the rapid progress that has already been made. Amongst Canada's national assets, water power occupies a foremost place because of the facilities it provides for the development of her other great natural resources. The rapid development of the mining, pulp and paper, and general manufacturing industries, and the concomitant growth in urbanization, with its numerous demands for domestic, commercial, and municipal service power, have combined to stimulate hydraulic development to a point surpassing even the most sanguine predictions of a few years ago. With the bringing into operation during 1928 of hydraulic turbines aggregating over 550,300 h.p., and of a further 378,400 h.p. in 1929, Canada's total hydraulic development at the end of 1929 amounted to over 5,700,000 h.p., and in this year, 1930, the active construction in hydro-electric plants throughout the country totals in excess of 1,600,000 h .p.

Independent prospectors and small to large-scale exploration company personnel have requested, and are in need of, guidance in geochemical field sample collection methods which will provide the most reliable results during chemical analysis. In cooperation with analytical laboratories, experienced geochemical exploration scientists and mining companies a systematic collection procedure has been developed. The procedure consists of collecting uncontaminated, water, sediment and rock chip samples of the appropriate quantity and/or dimensions to meet the needs of analysis.

In 2010, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) was Australia’s largest gold producer, with total annual production of 788 000 ounces. Of the gold produced by KCGM in 2010, 95 per cent was extracted from the Fimiston open pit, also known as the Superpit. The Fimiston operation encompasses the historic Golden Mile, from which more than 55 million ounces of gold have been extracted from the world-class Fimiston lode style mineralisation.The operational performance of the KCGM Fimiston open pit was reviewed for the period between 2005 and 2010. Key performance metrics reviewed included mined tonnes and grade, cost per ounce of gold produced and the mine to mill reconciliation trends. The years 2007 and 2008 were characterised by a decline in performance against key performance metrics. The ore zones were diluted, with the excess tonnes mined resulting in lower grade and an increase in the cost per ounce. Poor reconciliation between ore mined, the ore reserve model and the grade control polygons was also observed.A series of improvement initiatives were implemented in late 2008. As a result of changes made to the grade control and mining practices, the site performance recovered. Unplanned dilution was reduced, which had a positive impact on mined grade. The lower tonnes combined with higher grade reduced the cost per ounce to below budgeted levels in 2009 and 2010, enhancing the profitability of the operation. The operational performance between 2005 and 2010 was compared to the turnover statistics for the KCGM geology department over the same period. Turnover accelerated between 2005 and 2007, peaking at an annualised rate of 43 per cent. With the onset of the Global Financial Crisis and the implementation of retention initiatives, turnover reduced significantly between 2008 and 2010. A strong consistent correlation was observed between the turnover trends in geology and the performance of the grade control function and resultant site metrics.The cost of turnover is known intuitively, however, rarely quantified. To evaluate the benefit of the improved performance, a detailed financial model was used to quantify the impact of the grade control function. In 2010, the headgrade exceeding budget by just four per cent contributed an additional A$24 M of value to KCGM. In contrast, if the 2008 performance had been replicated in 2010 (-9 per cent on headgrade), the result would have removed A$61 M in value from the business. The KCGM experience between 2005 and 2010 demonstrates the value of human capital in a mining operation and the importance of a high performing geology grade control team to the profitability of a mining operation.

We present a discrete event simulator, TSJSim (Truck-Shovel JaamSim Simulator), for evaluating the stochastic and dynamic operational variables in a truck-shovel system. TSJSim offers four truck allocation strategies: Fixed truck assignment (FTA), Minimizing shovel production requirement (MSPR), Minimizing truck waiting time (MTWT), and Minimizing truck semi-cycle time (MTSCT) including the genetic algorithm (GA) optimization and the frozen dispatching algorithm (FDA) optimization rules. Multiple decision points along the haul routes for all the trucks close to the decision points were included in the model. The simulation results indicate that the trends associated with production tons and queuing time utilizing the four truck allocation strategies (MSPR, MTWT, FDA, and GA) all demonstrated similar patterns as the fleet size varied. As the system fleet size increased, the system production tons under these strategies at first increased significantly and then remained relatively constant; the queuing time relating to these strategies showed a positive relationship with the system fleet size. The bunching time decreased when the truck allocation strategies were applied in the model. In the simulated truck-shovel network system with multiple traffic intersections, by assigning the trucks at the intersections, both productivity and fleet utilization increased.
