The increased costs of exploration and drilling of new oil fields and the continued success of water flooding in nearly depleted oil fields have created a demand for information on the results obtained from individual projects. The Bureau of Mines has published several reports concerning water-flood activity in the Mid continent area and at the request of the industry has continued to collect and disseminate this information. This report was written in response to these requests. It describes in detail the water-flooding projects in Anderson, Franklin, Linn, and Miami Counties, Kans., and includes methods of water treating and the results obtained. The production histories of each county and many water-flood projects are shown graphically from the date of the first development. Maps of most of the major projects, showing their status as of January 1, 1953 are presented also. The practice of injecting water to stimulate oil production was legalized in Kansas in 1935, and the first water-flooding project authorized in this four-county area was initiated by the Texas Co. in December 1935 in Linn County, Forty-nine projects2/ initiated in the area to January 1953 are estimated to have recovered approximately 10 million barrels of oil that could not have been produced by methods used previously. About 7,900 productive acres had been, or are, flooded by these projects, and approximately 1.36 million barrels of water had been injected.

This progress report covers the period from January 1949 to the end of the fiscal year, June 30, 1950. Three runs were successfully completed, and one run was terminated as the result of failure of a cast reaction tube. Including the abbreviated run, the gasifier was operated for 1,915 hours, during which some 428 tons of natural and steam- dried lignite was partly gasified In producing 20 million cubic feet of gas. Gas-production rates varied from 7.8 to 16.4 thousand cubic feet per hour, the latter being the highest production rate yet reached; hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratios of the product gas varied from 1.85, the lowest ratio yet produced, to 6.5; and heat-transfer rates through the heated wall of the outer tube varied from 2,100 to 4,400 B.t.u. per square foot an hour. The general objective of the project is to establish the technology and economy of the gasification of lignite in an externally heated, metal, annular retort. Specific objectives include determination of the useful life of the metal retort tube, which is a continuing problem, and special objectives that were established for each run as part of the systematic investigation of the basic variables of the gasification process. For runs 10 and 11 the special objective was the influence of the lignite feed rate on gasification; for run 12, a comparison of dried and natural lignite, and the production of gas having a hydrogen-carbon monoxide ratio less than 2; and for run 13, the influence of a gradually increasing steam rate with steam admitted to either the upper or lower reaction zones. In addition, during each run the sulfur distribution and concentration in the product gas and char were investigated. Experimental results obtained using the lignite feed rate as the variable indicated that the gas yield per ton of natural lignite varied inversely with the feed rate. Comparison of the gasification of natural and steam-dried Dakota Star lignite indicated that the dried lignite was a superior gasification material because: 1. The hourly gas production was higher at normal combustion space temperatures under nearly equal experimental conditions. 2. On the moisture- and ash-free basis, a considerably higher feed rate could be maintained at a relatively high percentage of carbon gasified. 3. At nearly equal moisture- and ash-free feed rates, the specific gas yield was higher. The location of steam admission was found to be important because the gas yield per ton of natural lignite was higher when at least a portion of' the process steam was admitted to the upper reaction zone. Heat balances showed the potential heat in the gas and char to be 71.8 to 83.6 percent of the total heat input. The sulfur concentration in the product gas was low, being in the range of 35 to 140 grains per 100 cu. ft., of which 1.5 to 2.3 grains was organic sulfur. Careful measurements and inspection of the 310-alloy rolled plate tube following runs 11, 12, and 13 showed no excessive corrosion; however, some radial deformation had occurred indicating that deformation or creep might be the limiting factor in the life of the tube.

Sulfide-ore concentrates containing cobalt, nickel, copper, lead, and iron from the operations of the National Lead Co. at. Fredericktown, Mo., were treated successfully on a laboratory scale to recover more than 90 percent of the cobalt, nickel, and copper. A cobalt -nickel-bearing, lead-copper matte., produced by the St. Joseph Lead Co. at Herculaneum, Mo., was treated to produce a lead-zinc fume, a copper sulfide concentrate, and a cobalt nickel-iron product, netting a recovery of over 75 percent of the cobalt and about 90 percent of the nickel and copper. National Lead Co. bulk concentrates were chlorinated with gaseous chlorine to form anhydrous metal chlorides and sulfur chlorides, sulfur chlorides were recovered by distillation, a high percentage of the ferric chloride was converted to ferric oxide, and the chlorinated residual metals were extracted with water. Metal ions were removed from leach liquors by pH-controlled fractional precipitation as hydroxides. Cobalt solutions "were prepared from cobaltic hydroxide, and procedures were developed to remove contaminating metal ions. Purified cobalt solutions were employed as electrolytes for deposition of high-purity cobalt.

The Shanton magnetite-ilmenite deposits lie on the east flank of the Laramie Mountains, 43 miles northeast of Laramie, Albany County, Wyo. (fig. 1). The Shanton and other similar deposits in the Laramie Mountains were examined by Bureau of Mines engineers during 1942, 1943, and 1945, and a report2/ describing the results of a dip-needle survey and surface sampling was published in 1946. The Shanton deposits occur in a relatively flat section of the range at altitudes varying from 7,500 to 1,650 feet (fig. la). Prevailing rocks in the Shanton area consist of anorthosite with intrusive dikes of gabbro differentiates and granite. Titaniferous magnetite outcrops in five masses, which are separated at the surface by overburden and anorthosite.

The Dunkleberg district is in the Flint Creek Range of the northern Rocky Mountains, about 45 miles northwest of Butte, Mont. Silver - lead and zinc mineralization occurs over an area 4 miles long from north to south and 1 to 2 miles wide from west to east. Ore in appreciable quantity has been produced, mostly from the Forest Rose group of mines in the southern part of the district. The Forest Rose mine was the largest producer of lead and the Wasa mine, a mile farther south, the main producer of zinc. The total output of ore from these properties during World War II was 113,000 tons, or 98.2 percent of the total recorded production of the district. The Wasa mine was examined by a Bureau of Mines engineer2/ in 1944. Subsequent investigations during 1946, 1947, and 1948 included trenching and drilling Fn the Wasa area and examination of the Forest Rose and other mines.

[The Cartersville mining district is in Bartow County, Ga., about 40 miles northwest of Atlanta. Barite, limonite, ocher, amber, hematite, and, manganese oxide ores have been produced from the strict since about 1840. In the search for a possible source of manganese ore, Bureau of Mines engineers made a preliminary study of the district from September 1950 to January 1951. During this study 139 deposits were examined, and many mineral exposures were sampled. Manganese mineralization occurs as fine oxide and concretionary pellets in residual clays, as fine oxides in umberous clay, in brown-iron deposits, and in a limited quantity in mud ponds and Jig-tailing piles. The future supply of ferrograde manganese ore from the district, using current mining and benefication methods, appears limited to the recovery of the hard manganese ores deposits. Rough estimates indicate a reserve of manganese-bearing clays of about 8,000,000 long tons. This type of deposit has been extensively exploited and the larger deposits mined out to depths of from 50 to 200 feet. The remainder of these deposits are low grade, are covered with deep layers of colluvium, or lie below the ground-water table. Any future production from this source will require systematic prospecting, improved concentration, and an increase in the price of concentrate.]

Recent developments in mechanizing longwall it mining in Europe have aroused considerable interest among American coal-mine operators because this method provides an opportunity to improve safety, production, efficiency, and recovery. The success of longwall mining in Europe has depended to a large degree on development of effective roof-control systems. One of the major contributing factors in designing these systems is development off improved supports, which combine high load-bearing capacities with controlled yield characteristics, to use in the face areas. Other factors that relate to successful longwall mining involve knowledge of the structural properties of the strata above end below the coal bed being mined, movements of these strata induced by mining, and effects of the strata movements on the strata itself, as well as on the support system used. Extensive studies of the above factors relating to long-wall mining have been made in coal-mining countries abroad, and corresponding studies (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)3/ of room-and-pillar operations have been made in this country. Although descriptions and results of experiments of mechanized longwall operations in the United States have been published (6, 7, 8), this is the first instrumented study of roof behavior on a longwall operation. In view of the possible widespread application of this method of mining to American coal mines, where underground mining conditions are different from those found in European mines, an investigation was conducted at a mechanized longwall operation inn the Lancashire No. 15 mine, Barnes & Tucker Co., Cambric County, Bakerton, Pa., to study the factors that affect roof control. This report describes this investigation and discusses the results. This report describes in detail methods of making corrosion tests and chemical analyses that have been used extensively and satisfactorily in a study of plants in which various surface, waters and brines are conditioned and used for water flooding, brine disposal, and reservoir-pressure maintenance in Kansas, Oklahoma, and North Texas. The tests and analyses described were designed and adapted for use in the field in determining the relative corrosive and plugging tendencies of waters from various sources conditioned by different methods. Although the described methods were developed and used in testing oil-field waters in the Midcontinent oil-producing area of the United States, these same methods should be equally applicable to testing oil-field or highly mineralized waters throughout the world. Many of the methods used have been discussed by the writer (1)2/ previously, and some of them have been used for similar work in other laboratories. Early in the development of the practice of the subsurface injection of brines for disposal and increasing the recovery of oil, it became evident that different methods of chemical treatment and conditioning equipment would have to be devised to sustain desired injection rates into water-input wells. These changes became necessary because the highly mineralized waters produced with petroleum from deep formations became chemically unstable when pumped to the surface, owing to loss of dissolved gases as pressure and temperature dropped to atmospheric and to the contact with atmospheric oxygen at the surface.

[The utilization of Western coals and lignite is a continuing study of the Bureau of Mines, and storage of these fuels is of paramount importance. Since the seasonal demand for coal in the Western States triples between the summer and winter months, successful storage of these low-rank fuels would tend to level out this variation and should reduce fuel costs. The time is rapidly approaching when the West Coast States, particularly California, will annually import several million tons of coal from the Rocky Mountain States for additional power production. This will necessitate storage of large quantities of coal, and it is thefore important to develop experience in such storage. Dry surface storage, by virtue of its flexibility and low cost, is particularly adapted to the stockpiling of large quantities of coal. This report will, therefore be primarily concerned with such storage. Inasmuch as the problems of dry, open-pit storage are quite similar to those of surface stockpiling, experiences in pit storage will be discussed briefly. Although spontaneous combustion is a hazard in storing coal, experience has proved that heats can be avoided by proper stockpiling procedures. The purpose of this report is to show that the most reactive coals can be stored satisfactorily on the surface by avoiding segregation and by thorough compaction.]

An apparatus and procedure have been developed for testing the anchorage effectiveness of slotted-type bolts. The apparatus consists of: (1) A hydrualic Jack assembly for loading the bolt and (2) a device (extensometer or cathetometer) for measuring displacement of the bolt as it is loaded. This apparatus and procedure permit measurment of anchor slip for loads up to the yield load of the bolt. Two representative makes of slotted-type bolts (a total of 94 bolts) were tested in typical sandstone and shale mine roof. Analysis of the test results showed that (1) anchorage capacities up to the yield load of the bolts can be developed in either rock type; (2) the shape of the slotted end of the bolt affects the ease with which the bolt can be driven; (3) all bolts for which the driving distance was more than 1.25 inches produced satisfactory anchorage in both rock types (thus, driving distance can be used as a criterion for satisfactory anchorage); (4) for the group of bolts that was satisfactorily anchored the anchor slip was unaffected by the type of bolt but was considerably larger in shale than in sandstone; and (5) the bolt expansion, that is, the amount the wedge expands the prongs in excess of the diameter of the hole, can also be employed as a criterion for satisfactory anchorage. Although the bolt-expansion and driving-distance results do not differ appreciably, the latter is recommended because it is easier to determine.

[Testing explosives for safe use in coal miner ran boon an important factor in preventing mine explosions. In the United States, explosives that have been approved by the Bureau of Mines are called permissible explosives. A purvey of the history of coal mining since permissibility testing welt, instituted some 4 years ago shown that there is no record of a coal-mime explosion caused by permissible explosives when used in a manner prescribed by the Bureau. To maintain the appropriate standards of quality, the Bureau of Mines conducts a series of examinations and tenth on samples of explosives collected in the field. In what is considered the most crucial test, teat 1, the explosives An fired from a steel cannon into a gallery atmosphere containing a mixture of natural gas and air, In another important test, test 4, the explosives charge to fired into a mixture of natural gas, air, and coal diet. To satisfy the permissibility requirements, the explosive must undergo throe gallery teats without igniting gas or coal duet. Other tests also are required for permissibility, but they do not come within the scope of the present paper, which studies the factors affecting the incendivity of explosives when fired into methane, air, and/or coal-dust mixtures. It in believed that a better understanding of the factors will contribute to the development of safer explosives.]

[The explosability of coal dusts has been the subject of many investigations studies have been conducted in laboratories, in galleries and in coal faire; of several countries to obtain information on the causes, development, and prevention of mine explosions. Early laboratory experiments on it American colas dealt with pressures developed in test bomb by explosions of dust clouds and with, the effects of gas in the dust atmosphere.5/ Later, the emphasis shafted to evaluation of the relative fleet flammability and the ignition temperatures of coal dusts.6/ Much worthwhile effort was devoted to the development of Laboratory apparatus and test procedures that gave good correlation with large-scale explosion tests in the Experimental cost mine. The Bureau of Minas has been charged by the Congress with the responsibility for administrating the provisions of the Federal Coal-Mine Safety Act. One of the important duties of bureau inspectors under this act is to determine whether proper measures are taken to prevent mine explosions, which in moat miner includes Judea adequate rock dusting The investigation made after the explosion in Orient No. 2 mine, December 21, 1951, showed that much information is lacking on the adequacy of current rock-dusting and duet-sampling practices in the United States. To obtain such information, an intensive sampling survey was conducted by the Bureau in an Indiana coal mine. This paper summarizes the more Important findings from this survey, describes special samplings at several Pennsylvania coal miners, and discusses related studies in the Bureau's Experimental coal mine.

Geologically, the Williston Basin is a large structural depression of sedimentary rock in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota and Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Canada. The approximate It-mite of the basin are shown on figure 1; it is roughly circular with a diameter of about 400 miles and contains approximately 120,000 square miles. Although the petroleum potentialities in this area had long been recognized, it had not been vigorously prospected by the petroleum industry because of its geographic location, rigorous winters, depths to possibly productive zones, difficult geological problems, and the fact that more seemingly favorable areas were available for prospecting. With the discovery of oil near Edmonton, Alberta, in the prolific Devonian reefs, an incentive was given to explore for oil in the southeast extension of the same sedimentary trough, the Williston Basin. The Virden field discovery in southwestern Manitoba in January 1951 was a direct result of this southeastward movement. Discovery of this shallow field was followed soon after by discovery of' deep production on the Nesson anticline in North Dakota at Clarence Iverson No. 1 well. North Dakota then became the twenty-seventh petroleum-producing State.

Despite the wide interest in titanium and its compounds, no heat and free-energy-of-formation values for titanates (that is, compounds formed from titania and other metal oxides) have been available heretofore except for ilmenite (FeTi03). Such data are needed for understanding and developing processes for producing titania and titanium tetrachloride from ores (and possibly slags) and in connection with ceramic usage of titania. This paper reports experimental measurements of the heats of formation at ordinary temperature of 11 titanates-ilmenite, perovskite, barium metatinate, strontium metatitanate, barium-strontium metatitanate, barium orthotitanate, strontium orthotitanate, barium-strontium othotitanate, geikielite, magnesium-titanium spinel, and magnesium dititanate. The experimental method was solution calorimetry. The solution calorimeter was operated at 73.7°C. and used a strong hydrofluoric-hydrochloric acid mixture as the calorimetric fluid and reaction medium.

An earlier Bureau of Mines report4/ reviewed and summarized all reports of investigations dealing with the coarse grained pegmatites of the Black Hills of South Dakota to dune 1951. It was proposed, and the hope was expressed in this report, that future progress in the development of the technology of the mining and beneficiation of the pegmatite deposits would be rapid enough to make it possible to issue annual progress reports. Although notable progress has been made in the treatment of pegmatite material, it has not been rapid enough to justify annual reports

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the reserves of columbium (niobium) minerals in Arkansas and to develop metallurgical methods for concentrating the minerals and extracting the metal. The columbium resources of central Arkansas were explored by drilling and trenching, and a number of samples were taken. On the basis of this exploration the known reserves of the metal were estimated to be over 78,000,000 pounds. The reserves could possibly be extended by additional exploration to 150,000,000 pounds.

This report covers the preliminary phase of an investigation of some clays and shales and other materials in North and South Dakota to determine the feasibility of lightweight -aggregate manufacture in the two States. The background of the light - weight -aggregate industry, on a national basis, and results of preliminary laboratory testing of samples of North and South Dakota clays and shales from various localities are presented herein. The countrywide search for lightweight aggregates was necessitated toward the end of the 19th century by the change in building design from thick, heavy, load- bearing walls to a framework of structural steel .beams and columns with thin walls, followed shortly by the use of reinforced concrete and structural concrete as materials for the load-supporting frame. Ordinary concrete, with sand and gravel aggregate, weighs about 150 pounds to the cubic foot. A lighter concrete was needed to relieve the dead load and make it possible to construct higher buildings or add stories to existing buildings.
