The iron ore mining district of Labrador West and adjacent Quebec is Canada's largest iron ore producer with almost 50 years of production. The area is currently experiencing a period of renewed activity not seen in decades that includes new mine development, mine expansion and exploration for new iron ore resources. All of the past and present production and exploration programs in the district are centred on the Lower Proterozoic Superior-type iron formations of the Knob Lake Group, located within the Grenville tectonic province of the Canadian Shield. The Knob Lake Group is a continental margin sedimentary sequence which was deformed and subjected to greenschist to upper amphibolite facies metamorphism during the Grenville orogeny. Regional deformation and metamorphism plays a key role in making the iron formation of the Knob Lake Group economic. The distribution of orebodies in the district is controlled by superimposed F1/F2 synclines which causes thickening of the iron formation through repetition. Ore mineralogy consists of specular haematite, magnetite and locally martite with quartz as the major gangue mineral. Regional metamorphism has caused an increase in grain size of the ore minerals making it more amenable to concentrating and pelletising. Altius has been active in Labrador West since 2003 and is now the second largest licence holder in the district with several iron ore exploration projects. The Kamistiatusset project is located in the heart of the region's transportation, power and mining infrastructure. The property has seen limited previous exploration, but covers several significant iron ore prospects. Work by Altius includes a helicopter-borne magnetic survey, ground magnetic and gravity surveys, geological mapping, sampling and 6000 m of diamond core drilling all of which confirm both a favourable geologic setting and ore mineralogy.

"This paper describes the work undertaken to renovate the Pipe Open Pit drainage system, incorporating measures to improve effluent quality. It describes the technical feat of drilling an l l-inch-diameter hole from the bottom of the open pit for a distance of 1100feet to intersect an underground drift. An innovative method of checking the inclination of this hole is also described. The paper outlines the construction required on the 1500-foot level of the underground mine to facilitate water impoundment and slime settling, as well as the instrumentation for control of water flows. IntroductionThe Manitoba Division of Inco Metals Company operates two mines-an underground mine at Thompson and an open pit at Pipe. The Pipe Open Pit is located 20 miles southwest of the City of Thompson, approximately 400 miles due north of Win nipeg(Fig. 1).Surface diamond drilling of the Pipe ore body was sta rted in 1959. In 1961, a shaft was sunk to a depth o f 1,570 feet to carry out further exploration work and obtain bulk ore samples for metallurgical testing. Site preparation to mine the upper portion of the orebody as an open pit was initiated in 1966 and by late 1967, the removal of silt and clay overburden was in progress. The contractor completed the dredging in the fall of 1969. Over 12 million cubic yards of muskeg, clay and silt was removed, which in some places was 150 feet deep over the orebody. Production began in early 1971, by which time the top three benches of rock had been excavated and the orebody exposed.The Pipe No. 2 Mine main shaft was started in 1970 and completed in 1973 at a depth of 3,160 feet. Development for exploration purposes was carried out on the 1500 and 2460 levels, and permanent pumping facilities were installed.The surface dimensions of the open pit are 2,200 by 1,600 feet, with the long axis striking northeast. The walls are designed with a 45- to 50-degree slope and the ultimate design depth is 720 feet. The present depth of the pit is 520 feet and production capacity is 6,800 tons of ore per mine day."

The Inland System supplies raw water to the industrial and domestic users in the City of Birmingham, Alabama. The Inland System, which is nearly 60 years old, consists of an approximately 57.9m (190 feet) high earthen dam across the Blackburn Fork of the Black Warrior River, a 39.6m (130 feet) high reinforced concrete intake structure, a 1524mm (60inch) diameter Dresser coupled steel transmission pipeline, and various distribution lines extending into Birmingham. The Inland System was owned, operated and maintained by the Industrial Water Board (IWB) of the City of Birmingham, an agency of the city government, from 1958 until 1994. In 1994, the City of Birmingham consolidated all water and distribution functions under the Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB). In 1988, the IWB determined that the Inland System had reached a point where its reliability could not be assured without an in-depth evaluation and renovation. The IWB engaged Christy/Cobb, Inc. (CCI) of Birmingham as its consultant for the renovation work. CCI evaluated the Inland System and submitted a report to the IWB in April, 1992. The report contained several recommendations for capital improvements to the system including increasing the emergency spillway capacity, reconstructing the fuse plug, relocating public access to the lake away from the dam area, constructing a new intake structure, and constructing a tunnel through the dam abutment to deliver the water from the proposed intake structure to the existing 1524mm (60 inch) diameter supply line. The new intake structure and tunnel would provide for a future maximum demand flow rate as well as provide bypass and level control capabilities. CCI was authorized in 1992 to proceed with the engineering design for the renovation of the Inland System with emphasis on the spillway and intake structure. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The major component of the renovation of the Inland System was the new intake structure and tunnel through the dam abutment. CCI engaged Jenny Engineering Corporation (JEC) of Springfield, New Jersey as a consultant for the tunnel design. JEC was responsible for the design of the tunnel, the connecting shaft between the intake structure and tunnel, and the steel pipe final lining, while CCI was responsible for the intake structure and the connection to the existing supply pipeline as well as overall project management. CCI and JEC evaluated the project site in order to select the location for the new intake structure and set the alignment for the tunnel. A factor in the evaluation process was that the level of the lake could not be lowered to construct the new intake structure since the supply of water from the Inland System had to maintained. Due to the ongoing restructuring of the mining industry in central Europe with a continuous decline of the number of large underground mines and collieries, and a simultaneous decline of staff numbers in the remaining mines, the established mine rescue schemes are endangered to collapse. With the end of the mine rehabilitation at Wismut Uranium in 2014, the last remaining major mine rescue teams in Saxony, providing basic mine rescue services for all other mines in the region, will disappear. This will leave a large number of small mines and other underground operations without capable mine rescue support. Since none of these companies is able to set up a complete mines rescue unit on its own, new ways have to be found. Among others, a central mine rescue team for central Germany as well as the assistance by special trained professional fire fighters or mine rescue teams from abroad are discussed. Problems like location of the central rescue team, financing, communication and transport have to be solved. This paper provides an overview over the complexity of the problem as an example for other mining regions worldwide and will discuss national and cross-national strategies.

With the aging infrastructure, there is a need to maintain and extend the service life of steel structures in general and steel piles in particular. Steel piles support not only vertical loads but also dynamic horizontal loads in onshore and offshore applications. In order to select the appropriate methods to repair corroded steel piles used in onshore and offshore application, corrosion mechanisms were investigated with the rate of corrosion in various environments. The corrosion rate of steel in soil, water and soil-water interface varied from 2 to 500 µm/year. Based on literature review and analyses, the repair methods can be broadly characterized as protective coating, electro-chemical methods, wrapping and encasement and partial replacement of steel. Also, methods to evaluate the repair materials and the repair configuration have been documented.

Many studies indicate that in the US alone, costs due to corrosion loss is more than $276 billion annually (Michiel et al., 2010). Corrosion is the major cause of deterioration of steel structures and components (MNC, 2005). Load bearing steel piles are used as foundations for various types of structures and hence corrosion is very much influenced by the environment such as soil, water and soil-water interface. Corrosion of steel pile foundations may result in reduced capacity in the axial and lateral directions. Hence, understanding the rate of pile corrosion is essential to select the appropriate repair methods to avoid excessive deflection and failure (Decker et al. 2008).To prevent the deterioration mechanisms that attack a pile, it is fundamental both to identify and understand the deterioration mechanism that has been the cause of damage. Understanding the deterioration mechanism allows the engineer to design a repair that will combat this type of damage. It is widely recognized that the corrosion of carbon steel in soil, water and soil-water interface proceeds according to the following simplified anodic reaction and cathodic reactions in the presence of oxygen (Decker et al. 2008)."

An 8-foot tall horseshoe adit tunnel located within an abutment of the Mount Morris Dam in Mount Morris, NY required repair of a failed reinforced concrete liner. The adit tunnel is entirely founded within highly weathered shale bedrock units, which induced unloading stress on the original tunnel liner. An epoxy-impregnated carbon fiber fabric wrap manufactured by Sika was chosen to repair the failed adit tunnel liner. Kilduff Underground Engineering completed the design of the tunnel repair utilizing both empirical and numerical methods. Merco Engineering Contractors completed the injection of chemical grout and repair liner installation.

The building boom of the late 1970's and early 1980's has all but used up most of the better sites across the more populated metropolitan areas of the United States. This means that current buildings and other types of structures are being founded on more marginal sites. The use of marginal sites has placed ever-increasing quality control on the installation of the deep foundation systems utilized for these sites. Several remedial techniques are available for the repair of the deep foundation systems. These include minipiles, compaction grouting and jet grouting. Eight case histories are cited where these methods have been utilized to repair deep foundations.

The steel industry continues to explore and demonstrate technologies that decrease its greenhouse gas emissions, especially in blast furnace ironmaking where alternate operating conditions will be required. As the furnace has been optimised over many years, it is approaching the minimum fuel rate possible with coke and Pulverised Coal Injection (PCI). Alternative operating conditions are therefore required to further decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Because of this, hydrogen has been proposed as a reducing agent in the blast furnace. Injection of hydrogen through the tuyeres was assessed using a comprehensive 2D blast furnace global model. The model was calibrated to a blast furnace operating with PCI as a base case and various approaches to hydrogen injection assessed, with a particular focus on displacing PCI. The maximum hydrogen injection rate of 19.5 kg H2 per tonne of hot metal was predicted, limited by decreases in the raceway adiabatic flame temperature and top gas temperature. Internal blast furnace conditions, such as gas composition and reduction degree were also predicted. Holistic analysis was performed to estimate the effectiveness of hydrogen injection on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Based on these results, the changes in blast furnace operation and emissions under hydrogen injection are discussed.

"The Skanska/Kiewit/ECCO III team (SKE) in association with HNTB was awarded the design-build contract for Phase I of the Kosciuszko Bridge Replacement Project. As lead designer for the SKE team, HNTB was responsible for the design of the Brooklyn Connector which includes construction of approximately 2000 feet of new staged earth-filled embankments utilizing prefabricated modular retaining walls (T-Walls®). The proposed embankments will be constructed adjacent to and beneath the existing Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE) viaduct while the existing viaduct remains in service. Critical aspects of the settlement assessment relating to the soils supporting the existing BQE will be addressed, as their behavior drives the deformation of the viaduct. Furthermore, a construction monitoring program was used to enable the designer to assess settlement predictions and allow SKE to mitigate potential impacts to the existing BQE during construction. Additionally, the methodology for installation of the embankments in a limited access area underneath an active viaduct supported on settlement sensitive shallow foundations will be presented.INTRODUCTIONSkanska-Kiewit-ECCO III Joint Venture, in association with HNTB was contracted by the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) to design and construct the Phase 1 replacement of the Kosciuszko Bridge Design-Build Project. Phase 1 of the project involves the design and construction of the new eastbound structures of Interstate 278 over Newtown Creek from Brooklyn to Queens. The project runs between Morgan Avenue in Brooklyn and the Long Island Expressway Interchange in Queens (approx. 1.1 miles) and includes the staged demolition of the existing structures."

It is difficult to separate scheelite especially from fluorite with fatty acid collectors because the adsorption mechanism of these collectors occurs through chemisorption of the oleate ion onto the mineral surface. A simplified flotation process using Pb-BHA complexes was developed to replace the energy-inefficient Petrov’s process of using a fatty acid, increasing the recovery of scheelite and reducing the cost. The relationship between surface chemical properties (crystal chemistry, solubility, and Zeta potential) of minerals and flotation by using a fatty acid or Pb-BHA complexes was studied in detail to provide new insights into the selective separation mechanism. The results indicate that the scheelite surface exposes more O atoms than Ca and that they are negatively charged due to the anisometric dissolution of Ca and WO4, which provides the possibility for separation using selective interfacial reaction. The FTIR and Zeta potential results indicate that both chemical and electrostatic adsorption play an important role in the adsorption of Pb-BHA complexes on the scheelite surface. The XPS results of the atomic composition and binding energies confirmed the presence of the adsorbed Pb-BHA complexes and that O and Ca may be the active adsorption sites. Therefore, scheelite was able to be collected by forming either a Ca-O-Pbcollector or W-O-Pb-collector (BHA). However, fluorite was only able to be collected by a fatty acid collector and colloidal [H2SiO3]n -, and a high temperature was needed improve the selective desorption of the adsorbed fatty acid collector by forming Ca-[H2SiO3]n - on the fluorite surface, resulting in serious problems in industry. However, the Pb-BHA complexes significantly contribute to improving the recovery of scheelite minerals, simplifying the flotation process, and circulation of the residual reagents and water. The new process has been applied in Shizhuyuan Mine, and improved the recovery by almost 10%.

Liquid storage tanks are usually located in nearshore or coastal regions with soil profiles containing thick layers of compressible soils. These storage tanks are usually of large diameter up to 90m and carry high loads, and the tanks are supported by heavy deep foundations such as piles. These structures are subjected to huge lateral loads due to wind and earthquake, and any damage to storage tanks with highly inflammable liquids leads to disastrous condition. So, it is important that the top layer of soil (up to the fixity depth) should be strong enough to provide the required lateral load capacity to the pile. In a project for constructing LNG terminal in Odisha containing 2nos of 89m diameter LNG storage tanks supported with pile foundation located near to coastal region, for improving the lateral capacity of existing soil, the top 3m was replaced with compacted engineered fill (GSB). The site was a filled-up area with dredged soil from seabed, the top 5m-10m were soft to medium stiff clay with SPT N less than 10. The lateral design load on pile was 534kN under free head condition. Actual lateral capacity for the strata was around 200kN under free head condition which was less than required capacity as per structural requirements. Therefore, for improving the lateral capacity of pile the top 3m soil is replaced with well compacted engineered fill (GSB) in layers of 150mm and the capacity is proved by conducting initial and routine lateral load tests. This paper describes the properties of the engineered fill used and how the lateral load capacity of pile was improved to meet the design requirement.

TO THE AMERICAN MINING CONGRESS. AMERICAN INSTITUTE OE MINING ENGINEERS. MINING AND METALLURGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA. The committee that makes this report was appointed at the meeting of the American Mining Congress, at Denver, Colo., in. November, 1906. The appointment had in view the drafting. of a law for the regulation of quarrying and metalliferous mining under the police laws of the States, with the hope that the uniform adoption of such a law could tend to reduce the number of accidents in mining. Since its. appointment, the committee has had' under serious and continuous consideration the matter with which it was charged. At the meetings 0f the American Mining Congress in 19o7, 1908 and 1909, it reported progress. At the meeting in 1909 it was authorized to present its report not only to the American Mining Congress, but also to the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the. Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and to present its report in printed form during the interim between meetings of the American Mining Congress. The committee collected from the officials of the States of the Union copies of their mining laws. With the assistance of the Engineering and Mining Journal copies of the laws 0f Great Britain, the Transvaal, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, New aland, and certain European countries were also obtained. These laws were subjected to careful study. The first publication of the committee was a summary of the more important metalliferous mining laws 0f this country. Upon the basis of the existing laws of the States of the Union, Great Britain, and the English speaking colonies, a tentative draft. was prepared and printed in limited number in 1909, for convenience in securing the advice and criticism of a considerable number 0f persons engaged in the mining industry. In this way valuable suggestions were received. At the request of the chairman of this committee, Mr. Frederick L. Hoffman, statistician of the Prudential Insurance Company, of Newark, N. Ascot Racecourse in the UK is a major international venue for horseracing. The racecourse is being redeveloped to provide entirely new public facilities. The development includes the construction of a new grandstand. A site investigation was earned out comprising mainly cone penetration testing. The site is underlain by the Bagshot Formation, comprising predominately cohesionless deposits of medium dense becoming dense, silty fine to medium sand, containing occasional layers of clay. Shallow foundations would present uncertainty regarding total and differential movement; hence a piled foundation solution was chosen using a continuous flight auger (CFA) piling system. The possibility that piles may found either directly on or within the influence of cohesive material suggested uncertainty regarding toe resistance. In order to measure shaft friction, an instrumented preliminary test pile was undertaken. The results were compared to published correlations of cone and shaft resistance. This approach resulted in a net saving in terms of pile length which resulted in optimum value engineering and hence a cost saving to the client.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system there is a need to know when the material has developed a threshold early compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi) for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings. This equates to the material having developed enough strength to be self-supporting and allow for emplacement of the remaining support elements that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on-site in the first six hours after application using the ASTM C 116-90 (1990) standard. These advances were demonstrated in tests on five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using the field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. The findings of this NIOSH research for determining shotcrete early strength can improve mine safety by providing a method for determining initial site specific material property values to be used for design and as a means to conduct on-site quality control and monitoring during production.

As set forth in the decision of the Trail Smelter Arbitral Tribunal, dated April 16, 1938 This Tribunal is constituted under and its powers are derived from and limited by the convention between the United States of America and the Dominion of Canada signed at Ottawa, April 15, 1935, duly ratified by the two parties and ratification exchanged at Ottawa, August 3, 1935 (hereinafter termed "the Convention") . . . The duty imposed upon the Tribunal by the Convention was to "finally decide" the following questions: (1) Whether damage caused by the Trail Smelter in the State of Washington has occurred since the first day of January 1932, and, if so, what indemnity should be paid therefor? (2) In the event of the answer to the first part of the preceding Question being in the affirmative, whether the Trail Smelter should be required to refrain from causing damage in the State of Washington in the future and, if so, to what extent? (3) In the light of the answer to the preceding Question, what measures or regime, if any, should be adopted or maintained by the Trail Smelter? (4) What indemnity or compensation, if any, should be paid on account of any decision or decisions rendered by the Tribunal pursuant to the next two preceding Questions? In this decision reported to the Government of the United States of America and to the Government of the Dominion of Canada, the Tribunal answered the first question in its entirety and reserved decision on the other three questions in accordance with the following extract from their decision

QUALITY and size do not ordinarily go hand in hand, but there is good evidence that both these attributes reached a new peak at the Annual Meeting of the Institute in New York just concluded. Certainly, the total attendance of 2500 was far above any yet attained, as might be expected with the recent rapid growth of Institute member- ship. General comment indicates that the quality of the papers also was notable, though not measurable by so definite a yardstick as attendance. During the meeting 49 technical sessions were held, at which more than 250 formal papers were presented. In addition, there were some thirty special meetings of committees, Divisions, and other Institute groups. In reporting the Annual Meeting eleven years ago the statement was made that "unless the Engineering Societies should build for themselves a new building it is probable that no meeting can be larger," and "the fifth floor, where a buffet lunch is served each day, has reached its full capacity and it seems quite evident that any future development of Institute meetings must be along the lines of quality, not size." Unfortunately the angel to succeed Andrew Carnegie, who financed the building of the present home of the Institute 35 years ago, has not yet ' appeared. "Compagnie Miniere Esperance operates a gold primary ore body. The ore is processed through crushing, grinding and gravity concentration generating tailings with remaining fine gold. Analyses of the tailings proved a residual gold grade sufficient for a chemical treatment.As lab tests proved the technical feasibility of a pre-concentration using flotation, an on-site pilot operation has been carried out to assess the continuous circuit performances, define the best configuration and obtain enough data for the industrial circuit sizing.Data collected during the pilot campaign have been used for calibrating a process simulator built with the USIM™ PAC software. The simulator validated the feasibility of upgrading the existing plant, including the reprocessing of tailings to obtain a good fine gold recovery in a small amount of concentrate. A preliminary capital cost has been achieved to assess the flotation workshop profitability.INTRODUCTIONCompagnie Miniere Esperance (CME), a mining company based in French Guyana, operates a gold primary ore body in open pit. The ore is processed through crushing, grinding and gravity separation in two stages: a top plant and a bottom plant. A “coarse” pond contains tailings of the top plant; this product feeds the bottom plant. Tailings of the bottom plant are stored in the “fine” pond.Analyses of the fine ponds proved a residual gold grade sufficient for a chemical treatment.
