Copper ores from small mines in the area south of Tucson, where the Twin Buttes mine is located, were first operated in the 1880's. Today this area is one of the great copper mining centers of the world. In 1963, Anaconda Company acquired the property from Banner Mining Company and in recent years joined with AMAX in a 50/50 partnership to work the Twin Buttes property. From the beginning, Anaconda had relied on conveyors to remove overburden, oxide material for eventual leaching, and ore from the open pit. In the large st preproduction stripping program in mining history, Anaconda in a four-year period (1965 to 1969) removed 266 million tons of overburden of an average depth of 500 ft (152 m) lying over the ore body. The alluvium overburden was stripped by scrapers carrying 70 to 80 tons and push-loaded by two D9 tractors operating in tandem. The scrapers delivered their loads to bins which fed a 60 in. (1.52 m) conveyor having a capacity of 8500 tph. The 25% slope belt conveyor, which was 2100 ft (640 m) long, transported the material to the brow of the pit, where it was transferred to an 8300 ft (2530 m) surface belt to a 1000 ton loadout bin. At this point, the overburden was trucked to the sites of the tailings ponds, where it was used for dam construction. During 1976, the one billionth ton of overburden was removed from the Twin Buttes mine. The Twin Buttes quartz monzonite porphyry contains only scattered mineralization of which chalcopyrite is the most abundant mineral, associated with chalcocite, covellite, minor bornite, and several oxide minerals. Oxidation has progressed to variable depths of up to several hundred feet below the base of the alluvium. Because of the depth of the sulfide and oxide ores and hard rock waste, two in-pit crushers and conveyor systems were also installed for their transport out of the pit; and in 1976 a third crusher and conveyor system was installed lower in the pit for waste rock only. The two initial crushing and conveying systems were designed to handle any of three functions: crushing waste to be disposed of by a rail-mounted stacker -conveyor, crushing oxide ore for conveyor and then truck transport to stockpiles for future leaching, and primary crushing of sulfide ore for conveyor transport to the two 30 in. by 70 in. (0.76 by 1.78 m) secondary crushers and the two 7 ft (2. 13 m) standards and four 7 ft shortheads in the third and fourth stage crushing plant. A third standard crusher has been in- stalled recently. Geological maps of the Pacific Rim recently published by the Circum-Pacific Council for Energy and Mineral Resources have provided a useful perspective from which to view modern plate interaction and the evolution of modern fold belts. An important lesson from any study of modern plate interaction is that of the normality of change. The chaotic is more usual than the simple. Present day convergent margins with mixed characteristics are measures of this chaos. Indeed, the character of less than one third of the present length of the Pacific Rim can be ascribed to conventional models of plate interaction. Another lesson is that of the great mobility of oceanic crust. Enormous areas of the Pacific may not be represented in future fold belts developed at convergent boundaries unless normal consumption processes are disrupted, and even then only by linear zones a few kilometres wide. The axes of divergent boundaries creating Pacific Ocean crust have been equally mobile, with new spreading sites taking over from older sites through time. Divergent boundaries, whether active or inactive, consist of oceanic crust, and may be wholly consumed at collision sites with convergent boundaries. Their only potential contributions to fold belt evolution are transforms and magmatic activity. It is this transform component that can provide us with a mechanism to explain the apparent contradiction of both compressional and extensional features occurring together in a developing fold belt. Reconstructions for the SW Pacific are used to demonstrate that the fold belts under construction during the last 4% (Jurassic- Recent) of geologic time have involved interaction between convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries. "The project’s goal was to construct the Al Ghazala Intercontinental, a multi-use development in the bay area of Tripoli overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The site of the project is located approximately 500 ft (150 m) from the Mediterranean coast, near the Al Ghazala roundabout in the town center of Tripoli, Libya. The investor of the project was Magna Properties Group, Ltd. – Libya, the main contractor was Man Enterprise S.A.L., and the design and construction management was performed by Dar Al-Handasah Engineering. Trevi S.p.A. was contracted to perform the design and construction of the anchored diaphragm walls and dewatering systems for the excavation of a two-level basement car park, which extends across the full footprint of the site.The site was approximately 640 ft by 230 ft (195 m by 70 m) in plan and nearly flat. The groundwater level typically varies from about 11 ft to 23 ft (3.4 m to 7.0 m) above mean sea level. To construct the required raft foundation, it was necessary to excavate the area down to El. -15.7 ft to -26.3 ft (-4.8 m to -8.0 m), which resulted in an excavation depth ranging from about 27 ft to 39 ft (8.3 m to 12.0 m) below the existing ground surface.Subsurface ConditionsThe subsurface site investigation was performed in three phases by Al-Tamier Engineering Consulting Bureau. During Phase 1, a preliminary investigation was undertaken during the early stages of the project to obtain information about the general stratigraphy and groundwater level at the site. Phase 2 was performed to obtain subsurface information and design parameters, and Phase 3 was performed as a supplementary ground investigation to investigate unexpected ground conditions identified during Phase 2. In total, 14 boreholes were drilled to depths ranging from about 80 ft to 180 ft (24 to 55 m). The generalized subsurface profile is quite heterogeneous, and is predominantly composed of sand with silt and gravel that is underlain by limestone, calcarenite and claystone"

A new waterfront park was developed on Long Island in close proximity to the East River and Newtown Creek. The existing ground consisted of fill over soft organic clay, medium dense silty sand, glacial till and schist bedrock. The ground was initially raised to preload the underlying soft soils to stabilize the ground in preparation for site development. The ground was subsequently cut down to temporary grades for installation of foundation piles for the overlook structures and construction of reinforced concrete cantilever retaining walls forming pathways located adjacent to the water bodies. The retaining walls were located in two rows at different elevations along the sides of a steep embankment. Where the pathways converge, some of the walls were too close to each other, and were redesigned as a combined U-wall with a common base slab. The individual retaining walls were designed for adequate bearing, sliding and overturning resistance. Ground anchors were installed to enhance global stability of the retaining walls. This paper presents the design considerations for the retaining walls for various loading conditions, and evaluation of the trial and proof tests for the anchors. INTRODUCTION The New York City Master Plan included the transformation of an approximately 30-acre parcel of land in Long Island City, Queens, New York from a former manufacturing zone into a residential, commercial and recreational zone for middle-income community. The site was located at Hunters Point South along the eastern shoreline of the East River and Newtown Creek (Figure 1). The development included low to high- rise residential buildings, a public school, and retail structures. Open spaces were provided along the East River and Newtown Creek waterfronts in the form of a continuous park providing for recreational and community-related activities. Waterfront structures included small park buildings, walkways and viewing platforms. The shoreline was surrounded by revetments as part of the flood mitigation strategy. The project involved extensive site re-grading and several retaining walls were constructed. The earthwork volume amounted to approximately 47,000 cubic yard of imported fill and 93,000 cubic yard of cut. The exposed height of the retaining walls ranged from 3 to 15 feet. This paper focuses on the design and construction of the retaining walls for the project.

Both general and project specific information is provided regarding the design and construction of SMW walls. In addition, conclusions are presented that discuss the suitability of this particular application and other possible variations.

This paper presents a case history for a unique application of a system of vertical micropiles with horizontal soil nail bracing and shotcrete facing for underpinning. The system was used to support and protect an existing 2-story hospital building during demolition and renovation. The goal was to limit building movements and have the building remain in use during construction of an abutting addition. Soils at the site consisted of clean, loose to dense, sand and gravel. The original underpinning design was revised after the initial excavation revealed unsuitable soil conditions for traditional underpinning pits. An alternative system consisting of vertical micropiles (hollow bars) through the footing, combined with shotcrete and soil nails was proposed, accepted by the owner, and successfully constructed. Excavation depths were up to 15 feet (4.6 m) below the existing footings. Wall movements were monitored at regular, horizontal and vertical intervals along the hospital wall, and less than 0.6 inches (15 mm) of settlement and 0.1 inches (3 mm) of horizontal displacement throughout underpinning and construction were reported. The challenges with the original proposed support of excavation design and other alternative approaches considered will also be discussed.

The design of foundations for the tall buildings of lower Manhattan rely on the use of high capacity, rock anchors to resist overturning forces generated by lateral loads from wind, earth, water and, to a lesser degree, seismic forces. Once completed, the proposed towers at the World Trade Center (WTC) site will be among the tallest buildings in New York City. The towers are exposed to coastal winds and from several levels of below grade structure soil and water loads. The design loading required under the current New York City Building Code (NYCBC) is similar to the requirements of the building code used to design the original WTC Twin Towers. We will compare how rock anchors were deployed in the Twin Towers and how they are used in the new buildings. Changes to the building code are less significant that the changes to the design of the structure; that is how the outer skin or perimeter structure interacts with the building core. The result is a significant increase in the number of rock anchors required for the new buildings when compared to those installed in the original WTC Twin Towers.

THAIN* Pre-European gold mining and working in South Africa is a tantalizing field for conjecture. Well over thousand sites have been identified in Rhodesia, but here we have had to reach double figures, judging by published accounts. Geologically, the Transvaal is less amenable primitive exploitation, but it difficult to reject the idea that the knowledge gained to the north did not have its influence south of the Limpopo.

'Ancient' mining near Great Zimbabwe I. R. PHIMISTER. B.A. Hons. (Nottingham). B.A. Spec. Hons. (Rhodesia) (Visitor) In proposing reasons for the geographical location of Great Zimbabwe, the paper re-examines the popular assumption that Zimbabwe is comparatively remote from the known areas of 'ancient' goldmining. The lack of 'ancient' workings in the neighbourhood of Zimbabwe is pointed out, and it is suggested that the mining of placer deposits of gold may have played some part in the development of Zimbabwe on its particular site.

Charcoal produced from Syzygium Zeylanicum (local name: Yakada Maran = iron killer) trees were widely used in ancient Sri Lankan iron smelting practices. In this study, relict charcoal from Syzygium Zeylanicum tree trunks, branches and leaves were analysed for the first time. Unusually high concentrations of calcium oxalate (CaC2O4.H2O – CaOX) crystals were identified preserved in plant cell structures by optical mineralogy and SEM analysis. Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) of CaOX showed that it displayed three decomposition stages, releasing H2O at 177°C, CO at 493°C and CO2 at 750°C. Following the identification of CaOX in Sri Lankan charcoal, a series of reduction tests on a low-grade, high-P iron ore fine sample (high SiO2: 5 wt. per cent; Al2O3 4 wt. per cent; P: 0.135 wt. per cent) doped with CaOX were carried out at various temperatures. Samples were analysed by XRF, SEM and EPMA to determine the degree of reduction and the effect of reduction on the deportment of impurities, in particular P. Reduction tests at 800°C and 900°C with 5 wt. per cent CaOX showed that the reducibility increased to over 65 per cent. At temperatures above 900°C, P was located mainly within a fine, interstitial glass matrix suggesting that the CaOX flux enhanced removal of P from iron-rich pre-cursor phases to form glass. Preliminary magnetic separation tests to remove the P-rich interstitial glass were unsuccessful due to the fine grain size. Further complete reduction tests at temperatures above 1200°C with addition of coke to convert the iron oxides into Fem were conducted with samples doped with 10 wt. per cent CaOX, 10 wt. per cent CaCO3 and equivalent undoped samples. Results confirmed the preferential P-incorporation into a glassy matrix in the CaOX samples although some rare P incorporation into the metallic phase was noted. Experimental results, including comparisons with the CaCO3 fluxed and undoped samples, are discussed in view of the potential for CaOX flux for removing P (and potentially other impurities) from P-rich iron ores.

In this paper, the author offers a personal view of what the next 30 years holds for mineral processing. Restating that mineral processing will remain a vibrant industry in raw material production, growth opportunities in waste management are identified. The processing sequence familiar now (mining ?mineral processing ?extraction) will become more interwoven. In situ processing (i.e., milling underground) will evolve from concept to demonstration. Opportunities to exploit physical properties altered in chemical (pyro- and hydro-) processing will present themselves. In primary grinding, the path to AG/SAG milling will progress with little deviation but opportunities in regrinding are wide open. Flotation will see the trend to designing bubble/particle reactors accelerate simultaneously with a vigorous response from mechanical cell suppliers. Gravity separation remains a bastion of the lone inventor but this author anticipates that the new lines will come from the waste management business. The paper concludes with the examination of the “research cycle” and identification of growth in small “high tech” companies and university research centres

The Andacollo gold mine is located near the town of Andacollo (population 14,000 people) in Chile’s region four. It is about 56km (35 miles) by paved road from the coastal city of La Serena. Santiago is about480 km (300 miles) south. Site elevation varies between 1,000 and 1,280 m(3,300 and 4,200 ft). The climate at the Andacollo site is moderate but arid. Average annual rainfall is only 130mm (5 in.). Because there is little rain and the temperature varies only a few degrees (14 to 24 C or 57 to 75F), there are no problems with freezing, solution dilution or pad saturation. The climatic conditions are ideal for heap leaching.

Recently, the Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory (CERL) completed its investigation of a truck accident, which involved 18,000 kg of commercial explosives, 13,000 kg of which was ANFO. Over the three years of the investigation unconfined burns of piles of ANFO were performed. In its final phase of the investigation, two burn trials were performed in an attempt to recreate the accident and the ensuing fire, to identify probable mechanisms that led from burning to detonation. Two full-scale tests were performed using complete tractor-trailers. In each test, the trucks were placed in a jack-knifed position with the majority of the explosives located on the ground in front of the trailer. The explosives were placed in a manner to provide maximum confinement and to maximize the possibility of explosion/detonation while remaining as faithful as possible to the perceived accident geometry. The tests were instrumented using thermocouples and video cameras and observations were made on the burning characteristics of the explosives, tractor-trailer and tractor-trailer components. In each test the explosives burned calmly for approximately 80 minutes. There was no evidence of explosion or of unstable burning. The heat caused several truck components to rupture violently. These included the tires, some engine components, the spring brake chambers and possibly the fuel tanks. Of these, the most violent were the truck tires. Although no quantitative data was gathered on rupture violence or fragment velocity, it is speculated that several truck components might produce fragments with sufficient energy to initiate heat-sensitised explosives under favourable circumstances.

To date, Anglo Research has carried out several projects, based on the techniques developed in the AMIRA P9 (AMIRA International Limited), to develop comminution and flotation models for several Anglo Base Metals and, to a lesser degree, Anglo Platinum flotation plants. Plant optimization is thus achieved through steady-state sampling, model-fitting and simulation using the JK SimMet and JK SimFloat software packages. The surveys can vary depending on the needs of the plant/client. The survey can therefore include as little as a single piece of equipment, an entire milling/flotation circuit, or a complete circuit from primary comminution to final flotation concentrate (i.e. the ?integrated survey?). The presence of the AR team on-site usually precipitates in face-value observations that can lead to initial improvements. This stems from the knowledge-sharing on best practice that exists in parallel with the surveys. Numerous (reasonable) changes can then be simulated, thus indicating the optimization step most likely to result in the best efficiency improvements. The simulations can include changes in the flowsheet, ore characteristics, mill loads, grinding media size, change in grind, flotation residence time, air hold-up and several more. Plant surveys can result in process changes that provide the plant with either: higher plant tonnage, improved plant grind, additional flotation recovery and/or improved product grade. The additional benefit of performing an integrated plant survey is that the effects of an optimization change in the comminution circuit can be simulated using the flotation model. This paper describes a number of case studies where individual and integrated plant surveys were conducted by AR for Anglo Base Metals.

To date, Anglo American Research Laboratories (AARL) has carried out several projects, based on the techniques developed in AMIRA International LimitedÆs (the mineral industries research association) AMIRA P9 project, to develop models for several Anglo Base Metals flotation plants. Further detailed analysis of the data which was generated has realised additional benefits: the various hydrodynamic measurements were useful in comparing cell operating parameters to literature sources, while the laboratory batch tests give an indication of plant recovery potential. A detailed cell by cell mass balance, which is a critical feature of the modelling process, is in its own right a valuable diagnostic tool. Several examples of how this can be used to highlight potential improvement areas in the plants are presented. The added understanding gained from sampling each cell is clear and this is shown to more than compensate for any necessary modifications needed to allow sampling to take place. The model fitting process generates an ore floatability distribution, which is used in the JK SimFloat simulation package to assess the effect of possible changes to each of the circuits. An example of an actual circuit change as a result of this approach is presented. The current limitations of and the potential improvements to the modelling process are also briefly discussed. Future models will be extended to include enhanced size and mineralogical information where the basic models suggest this has potential to improve understanding.

Anglo Coal Australia (ACA) takes a proactive position with regards to attracting and retaining employees at a graduate level. Currently, ACA has graduates in its program across all disciplines: Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Commercial, Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Engineering, Human Resources, Safety Engineering and Processing Engineering. The current program is three years in duration and involves two (generally) equal periods at different ACA mine sites or Brisbane Corporate Office. ACA takes an active role in promoting its status at the university level by maintaining a scholarship program. Six undergraduate scholarships are offered each year across all disciplines. Associated Vacation Employment is offered to each scholarship holder during the period of his or her university study. This commitment to education is regarded highly by future graduates. ACAÆs active role in sponsoring student bodies is also known and appreciated amongst the university population. ACAÆs graduate program has been a successful training program for future leaders of the coal mining industry. The company is committed to making the program more suited to the needs of the graduates across all disciplines and as a result the program is not stagnant but is constantly changing and evolving. Recently the æGraduate PassportÆ has been drafted with an aim to keep each graduateÆs needs in relation to experience and training firmly in focus for the duration of the three-year program. Appropriate training for each graduateÆs position is supported by the company; for instance, support through funding and time for a commercial graduateÆs CPA qualifications is provided.

The introduction of Extra Low Profile (XLP) mechanised equipment within Anglo Platinum is aligned with the overall New Mining Technologies strategy to focus on continuing modernization of our mining operations to achieve injury free sustainable production and cost effective mining technologies. The method allows for the introduction of a suite of XLP and Low Profile (LP) equipment in a narrow reef (1,2m) mining environment. For the first time it is now possible to achieve total trackless mechanisation at these stoping widths and XLP Breast mining has the potential to add more value when benchmarked with conventional mining and other mechanised methods. Various types of XLP equipment were tested at different sites within Anglo Platinum and this paper describes the XLP equipment evolution to-date. It concludes with recommendations on our future strategy regarding implementation and roll out of the XLP technology within Anglo Platinum.
