THE purpose of this paper is to outline the pogress made in the development o the gravity separation method o ore dressing known as Sink-and-Float, which, in the opinion of the writers, has now reached a stage justifying the claim that this new method marks a highly important advance in the technique . The essential feature of the newest development of this process is the extremely accurate separation achieved. This is responsible for higher extraction in the sink-and-float unit on coarse sizes and, in consequence, for substantially higher overall recoveries. Whilst this is the most remarkable feature of the new process, it has further important contributions to make to ore dressing under the following heads: (1) The introduction of the sink-and-float separator as a buffer helps to iron-out irregularities in the mill feed. By supplying a concentrate of constant grade to the flotation section, the process also indirectly improves overall recovery. (2) The addition of a sink-and-float unit to an existing mill results in substantial increase in capacity at low per ton capital cost. (3) Where the plant can be installed underground for the pre-treatment of low-grade ores, there is a saving in hoisting costs, and excellent 'fill' is provided near the point of use. ( 4) Low-grade mixed oxide-sulphide copper ores may be pre-concentrated, thereby producing a flotation feed sufficiently rich to render the oxide residue from such flotation economic for subsequent treatment by leaching or other methods. (5) Application of the process eliminates hard gangue constituents which cause high grinding costs, or gangue constituents which adversely affect flotation. The plant is compact and easily controlled. No highly skilled operators or expensive reagents are required, and the labour and power per ton are low. The separator is extremely flexible, working equally efficiently on any throughput up to its maximum capacity.

However, every now and then a project suddenly arises where safety, timing and cost factors combine to form a critical scenario requiring rapid execution in an environment far more challenging than the norm. On these occasions, the stresses, complications - and most notably the dangers - related to the industry increase exponentially, and conspire to test the mettle of even the most seasoned experts.

The Beirut Hilton Hotel, which was built in 1975, but never occupied, was imploded on Sunday, July 14, 2002 by Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) of Phoenix, Maryland and their client, Optimal Engineering Consulting & Contracting, SARL, (OECC) of Antelias, Lebanon to make room for a new hotel. Twenty-seven years ago, just days before the grand opening, the Hilton Hotel became the site of fighting in Lebanon’s Civil War. Christian and Muslim militiamen fought room to room for control of the building and other nearby hotels. The Hilton, two other major hotels and other high-rise buildings were ravaged by the fighting. The building was one of the three major hotels badly damaged, but not rebuilt, in Lebanon. Located in the City Center, the Hilton stood out in a major redevelopment area which, in recent years, had erased the scars of the 15 year long Civil Wa r.

"This paper presents two recent studies on the extent of blast damage after excavation in crystalline rock. The Swedish Transport Administration and the Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) are both under regulations to limit excavation damage during construction of tunnels. SKB is also required to limit the Excavation Damage Zone (EDZ), as this could be a potential flow path for radionuclides in the planned repository for spent nuclear fuel. Presented in this paper are investigations of blast damage from three tunnel sites, a road tunnel, an experimental tunnel in Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory and an underground subway depot. As expected the fractures resulting from the bottom charge are both longer and more frequent then those mapped in the column charge. The results show that the requirement to limit blast damage according to Swedish regulations was fulfilled for the column charge at the three studied sites.1 INTRODUCTION The Swedish Transport Administration (TRV) and The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company (SKB) have both recently completed studies related the extent of blast damage from modern explosives after excavation. SKB studies focused on blast damage from pumpable emulsion explosives for underground construction (Ittner and Bouvin 2015) and hydraulic connectivity in the EDZ (Ericsson et al. 2015). TRV had a broader focus with different types of explosives including blasting for both road cuts and tunnelling with pumpable emulsion explosives. Investigations by means of geophysics were also conducted (Olsson et al. 2015). High demands on perimeter control and excavation damage is usually required for underground constructions with a long operation time, such as public tunnels for transport or underground repositories for nuclear waste. This paper presents the findings of recent Swedish studies and aims to discuss the topic in a broader context."

This paper gives a review of promising technologies for phosphate processing, and covers flotation, analysis and process control, as well as tailings treatment and utilization. Air bubbles of less than a µm in size, combined with relatively large bubbles, have been demonstrated, both in the lab and on a pilot scale, to improve flotation dramatically, by reducing reagent use while improving product grade. Innovative use of polymers has allowed rapid dewatering of fine tailings with a final product that does not segregate. The first online laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyzer was created, allowing rapid analysis of wet samples using the laser technology. Many large commercial projects are successfully pursuing the utilization of phosphogypsum.

"Three primary drivers are setting the trend for base and precious metal processing . they are: continued low real base metal prices, environmental concerns, and continued high prices for PGM.s. Low base metal prices are increasing the search for economies of scale and company consolidation as well as the development of some hydrometallurgical technologies. Environmental concerns are pushing for continued reductions in SO2 emissions and hydrometallurgical technologies. The high prices for PGM.s are driving major expansions and a focus on minerals processing recoveries and, to a lesser extent, reductions in the refining metal lockup.In nickel, HPAL operations on laterites have failed economically but Inco is still pursuing some alternatives. BHP-Billiton and others are developing bioleaching alternatives for nickel laterites and sulphides.Copper continues to be dominated by the hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical debate; new hydrometallurgical developments are being tested at several sites whilst the pyrometallurgists continue to make competitive cost and environmental improvements.Gold processing developments are dominated by the use of improved gravity recovery equipment and by the development of thiosulphate as a more environmentally acceptable lixiviant.PGM processing trends are the use of fine grinding technologies, higher power input flotation cells, and new pyrometallurgical technologies. Hydrometallurgical options for some applications are being sought.OVERVIEW The metals industry has remained under price pressure for some time; low and decreasing real prices for most metals have become an expected scenario. Occasional price spikes give some relief but invariably bring expansions and new entrants into an already oversupplied commodity market, thus leading to the continued price pressure. Technical innovation, economies of scale, and improved work systems are continually sought, so as to improve the competitive position of each individual company in such a climate; however, these developments add to the downward price pressure. In such a situation the application of scarce funds to research and development is a difficult task. Excess funding is not available in tight economic times and yet the main route to higher profits is clearly the application of technical developments to lower the cost of producing a metal commodity. Many technical centers have closed as a cost saving exercise and some have coalesced to obtain economies of scale. The Australian based AMIRA research organisation has grown to serve the R&D part of the market well in Australia and in South Africa by acting as the catalyst to form research partnerships between a number of industry players and as an administrator to direct the funding of research projects towards the various applicable research institutions. AMIRA has developed closer ties to Camiro (Canadian Mining Research Organisation) through the appointment of Camiro.s metallurgical processing research director as AMIRA.s North American based director. AMIRA is continuing discussions with MIRO (Minerals Industry Research Organisation) in regard to a merger, with a report outlining the merger proposal expected in March of 2003. Company focused research centers continue to be effective at Anglo American Research Labs, Teck-Cominco Research, Falconbridge Research center, Inco Research and some others."

China has been suffering from the most serious coal and gas outburst accidents. The situation has become worse than ever with the mining of deeper coal seams at higher production rates in a more complex underground mining environment, in order to meet the huge national demand for coal-fuelled power plants. In the year 2007 alone, more than 30 outburst accidents occurred in underground coal mines with a death toll of 258, and in the year 2008, as of May 22, nine outbursts have already occurred in Henan, Hubei and Chongqing, killing 68 workers. At the same time, China also experienced new trends of coal and gas outburst accidents since its coal production boom in the year 2001. These trends are of great importance for government agencies, coal mine owners and operators to take initiative and effective measures to prevent and control the occurrence of coal and gas outbursts in China?s widely spread outburst prone mining areas. This paper presents outburst data of China coal mines since 2001 and describes new trends of outburst occurrence in recent years, which include outbursts coupled with shocks or rock bursts of competent roof, outbursts in mines under development, outbursts in new mines and mines that have never suffered outbursts before, outbursts in mines that are believed to be of low gas content as well as outbursts in more long-wall faces. Based on the observation of outburst occurrence in China in the period from 2001 to 2008 as well as mining and geological conditions, detailed analysis of the possible causes that led to those new trends of outburst accidents is conducted. The analysis helps shed light on possible future remedies and the necessary measures to alleviate or eliminate outburst accidents in underground coal mines. Suggestions are put forward on future studies that could be of interest to national and provincial government agencies regarding strategic policies, proper technical management practice, identification of outburst prone coal seams, online monitoring of impending outbursts as well as prevention and control measures.

The "New Austrian Tunneling Method" is one of the most significant developments in European tunneling in the last 15 years. I hope this report will show the significance of this tunneling method, which was developed in Austria exactly 18 years ago and which is now used in many European countries. In Austria from 1948 to 1953, the Moll tunnel with a length of 11.6 km (about 7.3 miles) was constructed as a part of the Kaprun power plant. Depth of overburden varied from 1000 to 1400 m, and there were many rock bursts in calcareous-schist formations. Here for the first time it was found that a thin concrete lining would help to prevent rock bursts if it was sprayed on the rock soon after blasting. During construction of the Prutz-Imst tunnel in Austria from 1953 to 1956, the shotcrete lining was sprayed on the phyllite surface a certain distance behind the blasting face to prevent rapid rock decomposition. This method was also tried in soft-rock sections of the tunnel where steel and wood supports usually were necessary. To prevent loosening of the rock, application of the sprayed concrete was tried immediately after blasting. This method made it possible to tunnel through very soft ground. Where necessary, the shotcrete was supplemented by steel arches and mesh reinforcement. At that time (1953-1956), the machines and equipment for guniting or spraying concrete were being improved rapidly and it became possible to spray aggregates up to 25 mm in diam. Hardening accelerators brought quicker strength and better adhesion of the shotcrete-this also made it possible to use the method in wet tunnels. If the tunnels are extremely wet or flowing with water, it is necessary to seal off the wet rock or drain the water, using, for instance, the Oberhasli method. After these first successful steps with the new Austrian method, large portions of the Schwarzach power plant in Austria were designed and built. At this operation, shotcrete was used almost exclusively for tunneling work. It was on this site where, for the first time, a tunnel 120 m long with a 45-sq- m section was driven through overburden without one piece of timber

In Lusatia, lignite mining causes major disturbances on the landscape scale. Reclamation procedures are applied to recover the reconstructed landscape for different land use options. In this study we investigate soil physical properties of an agricultural reclamation/recultivation site directly after site restoration and the development of selected parameters within the first years after site restoration depending on varying recultivation strategies.The sandy substrates used for recultivation stem from depths of several meters. They are unstructured, free of recent organic matter and have high contents of calcium carbonate. During reconstruction and most of all during surface levelling with heavy crawlers, the substrate?undergoes high mechanical stresses. This leads to partly severe soil or substrate compaction, depending amongst others on substrate water content and mechanical stresses during site construction. We investigate the effect of different organic soil amendments, different crop rotations and partly subsoiling on the development of soil structure. We compare results of laboratory measurements directly after site construction before any reclamation measures had been applied to results we gained after three and four years of recultivation. The results show that after the earthworks are completed, the site is strongly heterogeneous in relation to mechanical stability, permeability for air and water, pore volume and bulk density. The results after three and four years show that the heterogeneity of soil physical parameters decreases. The selection of suitable crop rotations superimposes the affects of other reclamation measures, eg varying organic fertilisers or deep loosening.CITATION:Krnmmelbein, J and Raab, T, 2012. In Minnesota, reclamation of active aggregate mining sites is primarily regulated through local permits issued at the county, township, or municipality. However, for abandoned or depleted aggregate mining sites, a responsible party for reclamation is often no longer available. Since 1995, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has reclaimed several abandoned aggregate sites using innovative public/private partnerships and emphasizing native plant materials. The purpose of these projects is to demonstrate cost effective reclamation methods that can be utilized by both aggregate operators and local government and to promote mine planning and resource identification as it relates to reclamation.

In 1992, the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation received a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to fund the reclamation of an abandoned placer mine. The project also included the development of a water-quality and hydrologic-monitoring program. The grant was provided under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act and is administered through EPA's Region X Water Division. For the past 100 years, Alaska's interior has been the site of extensive placer-mining operations. Early surface and underground operations left small tailings piles, some of which are still visible. Dredging left larger tailings piles, similar to those in California and elsewhere. The only reclamation of these tailings involved use as road base and fill and other civil applications. Most active mines in Alaska are on state and federal lands. The standards of reclamation for mines on federal lands are established under US Mining Laws, 43 CFR 3809. They address only mines operated since 1981. Under a state statute passed in 1990, the Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water and Mining, has issued reclamation regulations. These regulations apply to sites on state, federal and private lands, but only those mined since Oct. 15, 1991.

The term "tender tundra" is a myth---a well-developed myth, but contrary to the fact. Any area that supports herbivores must have a plant base to supply food, In Alaska, herds of caribou migrate and live north of the Arctic Circle. And, if there is enough growth in the moss and lichens and arctic grass to support a caribou herd, the "tender tundra" can heal after it has been disturbed by mining. Another myth is that Alaska is an ice box. Actually, many areas In the state---particularly the Interior---have a high agricultural potential. Nevertheless, the fact remains: whether it is reclaimed by advancing the productivity from forest to agriculture or is allowed to remain a wild-life habitat, Alaskan land will revegetate. Reseeding speeds reclamation, but left to nature, native species will reclaim the land whether it was disturbed by forest fires, roads, villages, or mining. In fact, it is impossible to find many of the old gold mining camps.

What is prime farmland? Can such land, once it has been strip-mined for coal, be restored so that it will produce corn, soybeans, wheat, and alfalfa? What methods or practices are necessary to bring about restoration within a reasonable time so that crop yields will be equivalent to or higher than those of unmined prime farmland under high levels of management? These questions concerned land use researchers in Illinois as early as 1948 when the Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station experimented with growing cultivated crops on strip-mined land in St. Clair County (1). This research was done almost 30 years before requirements of Public Law 95-87 were passed by the United States Congress and signed August 3, 1977.

A methodology has been developed and demonstrated to be effective in reclaiming surface-mined land for a forestry post-mining land use. A field investigation was conducted at a steep-slope contour operation in eastern Kentucky to test the applicability of FRA in this setting. Final grading was performed according to FRA standards. The surface consisted of two distinct substitute rooting media. One was unweathered gray sandstone and the other was a combination of gray sandstone, brown sandstone, and topsoil. A variety of native hardwoods was planted following the FRA guidelines. The slope was instrumented with 70 survey monuments to monitor for mass movement. The reclaimed spoil was also characterized using bulk density and penetrometer resistance methods. The characteristics of both spoils are similar to those observed on flat to rolling surfaces where the FRA has been used and, after one year, approximately 70% of the trees had survived. During this first phase of investigation, there has been no major mass movement of the slope and slope stability analysis indicates that the application of the FRA has little impact on the overall stability of the slope. Mine planning typically involves designing an operation to uncover coal with the minimum initial costs with reclamation planning and earthworks being done as an "add on" task. The landform is too steep to remain stable, has no drainage and frequently has areas of excessive acidity or alkalinity. Extensive earthworks are required to reduce grades to an acceptable level and create a drainage system. The flexibility available to the mining engineer to alter the post mining landscape clearly depends on the mining methods. Straight dragline stripping provides virtually no flexibility. However most mining operations over the term of current ten year plans have a substantial pre-strip component. It is this pre-strip material which has the potential to reduce the final reshaping earthworks. The reshaping operation itself is subject to some flexibility with various options being available to re-grade and provide drainage. The full utilisation of this flexibility to minimise earthworks cost should be the aim of reclamation design. ACIRL's current thrust in reclamation is aimed at the integration of mine planning and reclamation earthworks. This involves gathering all environment and agricultural criteria and designing the earth works necessary to produce an acceptable final landform. A key component of our work is the use of computer aided design (CADD) for the design of spoil piles, pre-strip dumps and spoil re-shaping. This approach has been applied to a number of mine sites with earthworks operations covering hundreds of hectares and hundreds of millions of cubic metres volume. We are continuing to provide that consultancy service and at the same time are involved in the development of more sophisticated software tools to apply to reclamation design.

Modern coal cleaning technologies have allowed coal preparation facilities to become quite efficient at removing sulfur compounds, waste rock and low grade coals from run of mine coal. Up to 50% of the raw mined coal stream may end up as refuse, particularly when the coal originates from longwall mining operations, or is high in partings, rock and impurities. The refuse materials vary from coarse materials removed by physical screening to very fine materials removed by floatation and density separation processes. Coal refuse piles are also known by a variety of other names including "waste dumps", "gob piles" and "slate dumps". The potential hazards of improperly reclaimed refuse include contamination of surface and groundwaters by acidic leachates and runoff, erosion and sedimentation into nearby watersheds, spontaneous combustion, disturbance of topsoil borrow areas, and damage from landslides should large slope failures occur. Many of these problems have been particularly acute for abandoned refuse piles, and modern regulations attempt to minimize the environmental impact of coal refuse disposal operations.

Barrick's Goldstrike AA heap leach pad is an HDPE-lined facility that was used for gold recovery from low-grade ores using conventional cyanide heap-leach technology. The pad was operated from 1987 through 1999. Goldstrike prepared a unique reclamation plan for the AA leach pad facility to provide for a cost-effective, environmentally sound facility closure and to fulfill the State of Nevada's closure requirements. The traditional Nevada leach pad closure procedure involves rinsing to reduce the cyanide concentration to an acceptable level followed by reclamation. However, rinsing does not typically reduce certain metals and compounds, and some constituents may increase in concentration with rinsing. A closure scenario to effect limited infiltration through installation of a capillary cover for the leach pad was developed. The capillary cover was constructed by placing a fine-grained layer above the coarse-grained spent leach material to create a capillary break. In an arid climate such as in Nevada, the fine-grained layer will rarely reach saturation, and the cover will be able to store water during precipitation events and will allow removal of water through evaporation and transpiration (ET) during the growing season. A 1.22-m (4 ft) cover thickness was selected as the optimum design cover thickness. The drainage network on the surface of the recontoured AA heap leach pad was specifically designed to enhance the re vegetation, reclamation and sediment yield control aspects of the AA heap leach pad closure, while resulting in a natural looking surface that is compatible with the surrounding topography. Adjacent natural topographic features were used to establish target design parameters for recontouring and erosion-control design.

The abandoned Belle Eldridge Mine near Deadwood, South Dakota, is on land controlled by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. The mine produced primarily lead and zinc during the first half of the twentieth century. The BLM has expressed concern about acidic drainage as well as elevated arsenic levels in tailings and waste rock at the site. The mine site was evaluated for remediation in 1998 and 1999. Recent reclamation and remediation work included substantial regrading of waste rock, removal of material where metal loading were of concern, and re-routing of drainage from an adit. Trenching at the site shoed a greater volume than originally calculated during site characterization. Material was removed to a repository that was constructed at a nearby drainage divide. Because of physical hazards, the BLM has decided to remove some historic structures. However, a search of mine records and an inventory of archival materials were complete to preserve the history of the site.

Homestake Mining Co. set out to complete final reclamation at a former open-pit gold mine in west central Nevada. The goal was to exceed regulatory standards by satisfying the company's own high corporate standards for successful reclamation. Homestake's completion requirements challenged available technology due to the unsuitability of heap material as a growth medium, the harsh environmental conditions of the site and the region's lack of native growth medium. Accomplishing these goals required enlisting a multidisciplinary project team to develop, test and implement appropriate and cost-effective revegetation alternatives.
