One of the most important problems facing the coal industry today is the disposal of refuse from the coal preparation plants in a safe, economical, and efficient manner while complying with all legal requirements. The most commonly used refuse disposal method has been landfill/impoundment. In this method, the coarser refuse fractions are disposed of by layering and compaction into a landfill. The fine coal slurry refuse fraction is impounded in a dam constructed of a portion or all of the coarser refuse fractions. The failure of an impoundment at Buffalo Creek, Saunders, West Virginia and the sliding failure of a coarse refuse pile at Aberfan, Wales, England, resulted in an evaluation of refuse disposal methods by various regulatory agencies as well as coal producers. The result of this evaluation was the promulgation of Federal regulations dealing with the preparation, operation, and final abandonment of coal refuse disposal areas. As a consequence of these regulations the use of the landfill/impoundment method of disposal became in some cases economically unfeasible or technically impossible. Cyanide management practices on modern gold plants are becoming more onerous, due to environmental pressures, particularly for signatories to the International Cyanide Management Code. Operations are therefore seeking to reduce levels of weak-acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide reporting to spigot discharge as well as to any eventual discharges from the tailings storage facility (TSF). Current gold industry standard processes primarily include the oxidation of cyanide by means of sodium meta-bisulfite (SMBS, or SO2) with air, Caro&apos;s acid (H2SO5) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). These processes require the transport and usage of expensive oxidizing reagents, along with the safety and environmental issues associated with these corrosive and toxic chemicals. Maelgwyn Mineral Services (MMS) has developed the MMS CN-DTM process, which utilizes the Aachen ReactorTM, a high-energy mass-transfer superoxygenation system, in conjunction with an activated carbon-based catalyst and no additional reagents, to increase the rate of cyanide oxidation to cyanate, the thermodynamically more stable form. Testwork conducted at the Maelgwyn Australia testwork facility in Perth Australia is described, at both pilot scale and continuous bench-scale, on a sample of tailings effluent obtained from an Australian gold plant. WAD cyanide is demonstrated to be lowered using the MMS CN-DTM process from an influent of 130 mg/L to the required levels for discharge to TSF (<50 mg/L). The continuous test results showed stable operation over three residence time turnovers. The pilot-scale results demonstrated the efficiency of the process at the reasonably large scales required for engineering cost estimation.

"Sorting technologies have the potential to reduce energy use in comminution by rejecting uneconomic ore before feed material enters the mill. However, a major challenge for sorting porphyry copper ores is providing a basis of discrimination between valuable and non-valuable fragments, due to their complex mineralogies and textural features. Microwave heating in combination with infra-red detection (MW-IR) has been shown to provide upgraded feedstock for certain ores at bench scale. Selective heating of copper sulphide minerals compared to the gangue leads to an increased thermal response for valuable fragments, providing the basis for sorting.Rapid scale up of MW-IR from bench scale to a 100 t/h continuous pilot plant facility has been facilitated by the design of microwave choking structures to allow continuous operation at industrially meaningful throughputs, whilst meeting health and safety and electromagnetic compliance standards, and the integration of materials handling with electromagnetic systems.Laboratory batch testing on a pilot scale microwave system has been undertaken to investigate the thermal response of copper ores under industrial conditions, at microwave energy inputs up to 1 kWh/t. These results provided the operating window and recommended test conditions for the continuous pilot plant. Sortability curves predicted in the laboratory are in good agreement with separations achieved during continuous pilot plant operations. The potential microwave sortability of a number of ores has been studied, allowing informed decisions to be made about potential ore candidates based on mineralogy. Future development of the technology will be underpinned by the creation and validation of scale up concepts for 1000 t/h operations. Understanding the value proposition for individual sites/applications will be central to unlocking the potential economic and environmental benefits of microwave sorting."

A high-altitude (2,900 m [9,500 ft]) historic underground copper mine in Wyoming is discharging copper-laden water with a neutral pH into an otherwise pristine creek. The Wyoming Abandoned Mine Land program is reclaiming the site under a CERCLA deferral agreement. The clean-up goal is to reduce copper in the mine discharge so that the creek can eventually support a trout fishery. A pilot-scale passive treatment test utilizing sulfate-reducing bacteria has been conducted at the site beginning in summer 1997. Test results show significant reduction in copper concentrations in near-freezing mine water at flow rates ranging to 19 liters per minute (5 gpm)

The U.S. Bureau of Mines initiated research to improve the safety and efficiency of transporting coal from deep underground mines using a balanced air-lift hydrohoist. A 50-m-high pilot-scale model was constructed and tested to evaluate the feasibility of hydraulically hoisting a coal-water slurry in a U-tube pipeline from the mine level to the surface with the assistance of compressed air. A prototype screw feeder is used to continuously compact and inject 5-cm or less run-of-mine coal into a pressurized 20-cm-diam pipeline. Production rates up to 40 metric tph at an airflow of 1.5 m3/min were achieved with the model, and coal size degradation was relatively minor. Modifications are in progress to achieve 100 tph at an airflow of 2.8 standard m3/min injected into the riser pipe. Pilot-scale results indicate that an air-lift hydrohoist system is a feasible, cost-effective alternative to conventional skip hoisting that can be installed in existing shafts or surface-drilled holes closer to the face area. Air-lift hydrohoisting offers advantages of infinitely adjustable slurry flow rates, reduced pressure at the point of coal injection, and flexible design that can be combined with hydraulic pumping. Proposed design changes are discussed for coal transport, mine layouts, ventilation, fire control, and escapeways using this system.

Comprehensive pilot testwork has been conducted on BHP Billiton&apos;s Ravensthorpe nickel laterite deposit over a fifteen-month period at Lakefield Oretest. Some 228 tonnes of ore were processed in a beneficiation pilot-plant comprising scrubbing, attrition scrubbing, screening and thickening over sixteen pilot runs with an average mass closure of 99.2%. This produced a suitable feed for hydrometallurgical piloting over seven runs covering 1,680 hours of operation. The integrated EPAL® (enhanced pressure acid leach) circuit comprised a limonite pressure acid leach front end discharging into a saprolite atmospheric leach circuit and subsequently to induced jarosite precipitation, counter-current decantation, iron removal, mixed hydroxide precipitation, and manganese removal. The pilot plant met its key objectives in demonstrating the flowsheet&apos;s technical viability, and generating raw data inputs for the project feasibility study. Rapid, intensive data capture, collation and reporting helped solve key flowsheet issues. The pilot plant also demonstrated its value as a risk management tool in the resolution of numerous engineering, metallurgical and materials selection issues at a manageable scale. A disciplined approach to experimental planning, operation and management was a significant contributor to the overall success of the campaign. The quality of Pregnant Leach Solution (PLS) at Skorpion Zinc is of utmost importance for efficient operation of the Solvent Extraction (SX) Plant. Suspended solids in the PLS forms CRUD in the settlers, resulting in reduced zinc transfer capacity and increased impurity carry over to Electrowinning. The Ishigaki Fibre-Wakishimizu filter (fibre media rapid filtration equipment) has been identified as polishing filter that potentially could remove solids from the PLS of Skorpion Zinc. A pilot unit with 20m³/h capacity was tested on site over a period of 9 months under plant operating conditions in the refinery. The FW filter produces a clear filtrate, acceptable for the Solvent Extraction. Turbidity is improved by 72%. Gravimetric analysis indicates a 47% removal of solids. However, the gravimetric method is biased by a co-precipitation of saturated salts during the analysis. Filter media is blinded by the Skorpion Zinc PLS solution, as result of suspended solids and process chemistry. The media could not be regenerated to acceptable conditions. Further testwork to investigate the impact of process solution chemistry modification on blinding is undertaken. Based on the outcome of this investigation a final decision on the FW filter can be taken.

A production information management system (PIMS) was recently implemented at Queensland NickelÆs Yabulu Refinery. Although a strong business case was developed to justify the significant investment in PIMS some potential beneficiaries remained sceptical of the anticipated benefits. The decision to install PIMS was justified as the on-line availability of continuous production data enabled the optimisation of some crucial operations resulting in significant cost savings, improved throughput and final product quality. Furthermore the rapid access to extended historical data has allowed the cause of repeated failure of equipment to be determined. The investment is expected to pay for itself within two years and has already contributed towards significant savings. This paper focuses on some of the diverse production improvements gained and compares the anticipated benefits in the business case to those achieved. A brief outline of the phased implementation of the OSIsoft PI data historian and complementary client software at Yabulu is included, along with details of the lessons learned.

Since the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake in the San Francisco Bay Area, the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) has accelerated seismic upgrading of their bridges. Many structures can be improved with the simple addition of hinge seat restrainers. Others require modification of column bents and superstructure to column connections. Often, footing retrofits are necessary, which require the addition of tension/compression elements (compression piling and tiedowns anchors) to resist overturning moments substantially larger than those originally used for footing design. These footing retrofits may include doweled reinforced concrete footing extensions or new pile caps which transmit forces to either driven steel or drilled concrete piles. In some cases, installation of these traditional piling elements is expensive, impractical or impossible due to: low overhead clearance, ground obstructions, high water table, noise or vibration sensitivity, or the inability to laterally expand the existing plan dimensions of the footing. In the latter case, one practical option is to attach small diameter drilled and grouted tension/compression piling elements (Pin Piles) to the existing footing. The footing may be strengthened with dowels and added concrete thickness or there may be a reduced shear span due to the installation of larger or jacketed columns. A reduction of elements is available with a Pin Pile alternative, particularly when the selection of traditional standard piles is governed by the reduced tension/uplift capacity available from the traditional elements, since Pin Piles exhibit superior uplift performance.

Pin Piles are small diameter high capacity drilled and grouted piles also called minipiles or micropiles. They are ideal for building foundations on sites with poor ground conditions, sensitive surroundings, restricted vertical clearance, or difficult access. They are also well suited to foundation underpinning, arresting ground movements, and increasing the capacity of existing foundations. The major factors for selection of Pin Piles are reviewed; drilling, grouting, and design fundamentals are summarized; and a major case history is presented for the underpinning of the 43 story elevator core at the recently opened Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

"Pinchi Lake and Bralorne Takla mercury mines; Canada's only producing mercury mines during the past war (1939-1945); occur within the Pinchi Lake mercury belt. This belt is in central British Columbia; and is approximately 150 miles long extending from southeast of Fort St. James northwest to the headwaters of Omineca river.During the field season of 1937 cinnabar was discovered by J. G. Gray of the Geological Survey in Permian limestone on the north shore of Pinchi lake, where the main showings of the Pinchi Lake mercury mine were later developed. Following the publication of Gray's report claims were staked in the spring of 1938, and later that year were optioned to the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, and in June 1940 a reduction plant with a rated capacity of SO tons a day was brought into operation. In 1943 the plant had a capacity of more than 1,000 tons a day. The grade of ore treated was reported to average S to 10 pounds of mercury a ton, and production during the years 1940 to 1944 exceeded 4,000,000 pounds. The Bralorne Takla mercury mine, which is 90 miles northwest of the Pinchi Lake mercury mine, was brought into production in November 1943 with completion of a 50-ton mill. During the next 10 months more than 100,000 pounds of mercury were recovered, and the grade of the ore was reported to average 15 to 20 pounds of mercury a ton. During the war, production from these two properties was far in excess of Canadian requirements, and Canada was able to supply the United Kingdom and United States with part of their need.s. Both properties ceased operations during 1944, and, due to an excessive supply of mercury, have not yet reopened. The Pinchi Lake mercury belt lies along a northwest-trending major fault zone called the Pinchi fault zone (Fig. 1). This zone is approximately 150 miles long and varies in width from 200 to 1,000 feet . It forms the northeastern edge of a northwest trending fault belt up to 10 miles or more wide in places. In general the northeastern margin of the Pinchi fault zone represents the contact between closely folded, stratified Permian rock:s on the southwest and Mesozoic formations and Omineca intrusions on the northeast. It seems probable that the fault zone marks the site of major thrust faulting from the southwest and that the Permian rocks moved up with respect to the Mesozoic formations. Intense faulting occurs in the Permian rocks within the fault zone. There the more important faults trend north and northwest, dip steeply west and southwest, and may join a major low-angle thrust fault at depth."

The paper describes the design development and construction of bored piles at Pindersfield Hospital, Wakefield, U.K. The piles were of monopile type. Monopile is the term used to describe piles which are constructed without pile caps so that the superstructure columns bear directly on the pile top. Pile geotechnical design was developed from the Site Investigation data and testing of two preliminary piles. Final design philosophy is described. Pile structural design was developed from the loadings applied by the superstructure, and the requirements, tolerances and limitations of monopile construction techniques. Construction was closely controlled in order to achieve a ?right first time? result. The conclusion gives a critique of the system and its value.

The Pinson Mining Co., which will start production in very early 1981, is the fourth Carbon-In-Pulp plant to be put into operation in the United States. The property is located in Humbolt County, Nevada, 38 km (24 miles) northeast of the town of Golconda. The famous Getchell Mine was also near Golconda and was the site of one of the early Carbon-In-Pulp plants in the 1940s. The deposit was discovered in 1971 by Reno based Cordilleran Explorations, which is founded by a consortium of Canadian mining companies. Cordilleran is a partnership consisting of John Livermore and Peter Galli. In 1972 a second but smaller deposit, called "Preble", was discovered at a location 15 miles south of Pinson. During 1980, a decision was made to place the Pinson deposit into production and Pinson Mining Company was formed. Ownership of Pinson is vested in Lacana Mining Inc. , Rayrock Mines, Inc. , Siscoe Metals, Inc., John S. Livermore, Peter E. Galli and Donald M. Duncan. Three distinct but connected ore zones occur at Pinson. Combined reserves of milling ore total 3, 200, 000 tons at an average (undiluted) grade of 4. 12 g per mt (0. 12 oz per st) Au. Initial mining will be from "A" zone which contains 1, 500, 000 tons with an average (undiluted) grade of 5. 8 g per mt (0. 17 oz per st) Au. An additional 5, 500, 000 tons of low grade ore will be mined from the Pinson deposit and processed by heap leaching. Mining reserves at Preble total at least 1, 500, 000 tons grading 2. 7 g per mt (0. 08 oz per st) Au. Production plans for the Preble deposit have not been formulated at the date of writing. Gold mineralization at both deposits is finely disseminated as sub micron sized particles. The ore at Pinson is structurally controlled and occurs in an Ordovician limestone-siltstone unit. Much of the ore has been silicified to a jasperoid. The ore zones have been entirely oxidized. Preble ore occurs in the Cambrian formation in a carbonaceous, limey shale. Only the upper part of the Preble is oxidized and amenable to conventional cyanide leaching. The Pinson ore body is adjacent to the mouth of Granite Creek in the Osgood Mountains at an elevation of 1, 615 m (5, 300 ft) with the mill being 1. 2 km (3/4 mile) from the mine at an elevation of 1, 495 m (4, 900 ft). Magnesium International Limited (MIL) has broken new ground in their desire to integrate their mineral development activities in the Southern Flinders Ranges of South Australia in to the communities of the region, despite there being no statutory requirement to do so. In their efforts to define a magnesite resource adjacent to the proposed site for a magnesium metal processing facility, MIL opened their exploration program up for public consultation. In conjunction with the Port Pirie Regional Development Board (PPRDB), a community group was formed to review the impact of exploration and mining on the ecologically sensitive Southern Flinders region. This voluntary move towards full community consultation for mineral exploration was a first in South Australia and probably in Australia. The Community Focus Group (CFG) worked closely with MIL, Primary Industries and Resources of South Australia (PIRSA) and the Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH) in the development of an exploration program and Declaration of Environmental Factors (DEF) acceptable to all stakeholders. Collaboratively, the community concerns were discussed and addressed, with the community gaining a very comprehensive understanding of the exploration process and possible future mine development. A balance of social, environmental and economic factors was developed that was accepted by all parties and encapsulated in the final DEF for approval by the regulatory authority. The consultation process was a new experience for all of the stakeholders, each of them effectively exploring new ground in addressing information dissemination, risk management and the social versus economic equation. MIL developed not only a viable and acceptable exploration program but also substantially reinforced its position as a responsible corporate citizen with the Southern Flinders communities.

An unconventional drill pattern is used in an aggregate quarry to reduce pioneering costs. The site is the Iron Mountain Quarry, Granite Falls, WA., an aggregate quarry with an annual production of in excess of 1,000,000 tons. The problem is to pioneer a forty acre addition of on top of Iron Mountain. The entire area had a vertical relief of fifty to one hundred feet with no level surfaces. How does one achieve the minimum cost?

Pipe canopies continue to gain momentum as a reliable methodology for construction of excavations below critical facilities with minimal surface settlement tolerances, such as railroads or roadways. Two tunnel projects designed by Kilduff Underground Engineering in the Salt Lake City, UT area, each at varying stages of completion, had project design criteria for selection of a tunneling methodology to minimize surface settlement. Both projects consist of a pedestrian tunnel, one crossing beneath a major roadway in downtown Salt Lake City and the second beneath UPRR tracks. Both projects were in difficult, coarse alluvium/fan ground conditions with project criteria that resulted in minimal cover above the tunnel. For each project, a pre-support pipe canopy was designed, requiring the placement of steel, canopy pipes driven the extent of the tunnel length. The pipe canopy is installed using a trenchless technology and then excavated with SEM tunneling and shoring provided by traditional support of excavation methods. The pipe canopy pre-support method offers a low-impact method to install an underpass beneath critical structures by adding significant stiffness to the subgrade to mitigate surface settlement during the main tunnel excavation sequence. These case studies seek to communicate the challenges associated with pipe canopy installation in site-specific ground conditions and explains how these challenges were overcome. This paper aims to define the project risks and describes the pipe canopy methodology as a viable solution to mitigate surface settlement in low cover tunneling scenarios.

"Since the mid-19th century the River Emscher in the German Ruhr District has been used for disposing of wastewater. In the early 1990s, it was decided to replace the existing open wastewater system with a sewer system and to restore the River Emscher to its natural state. The major Emscher conversion project is divided into a large number of individual schemes, with construction phase 30 being the largest. By applying the pipe jacking method, interlinking tunnels with section lengths in excess of 1,100 m are constructed. USAGE OF THE EMSCHER OVER TIME The 85-km long river Emscher flows right through the Ruhr District. It has its source to the east of Dortmund and flows into the river Rhine near Dinslaken (Figure 1).The Emscher has been used to dispose of wastewater since industrialization began about 200 years ago. Intensive coal mining over the years led to considerable subsidence causing stagnant sewer areas which in turn led to typhus and other deceases. Thus in 1899, the Emschergenossenschaft was founded to create an efficient interceptor system for a catchment area of 865 km² through lining, raising and Emschergenossenschaft decided to free the waterways of the Emscher system from sewage and to improve them in ecological terms by 2020. A budget of 4.5 billion euros was earmarked for this purpose.The construction of sewer conduits began in order to no longer transfer the wastewater into the Emscher. The currently ongoing construction of the “Emscher Interceptor” - the main sewer - represents the heart of the Emscher conversion project. The interceptor will run along the river over a length of 51 km. Three pumping stations are required to confine the sewer’s depth to elevations between 15 and a maximum of 40 m below the surface. Since early 2012, the Emscher has been free from wastewater east of the Dortmund-Deusen clarification plant. There are two further clarification plants situated along the Emscher, which treat the still contaminated river water down-stream. Once the Emscher Interceptor is in operation, they will receive wastewater solely from the tunnel system."

Syphons can be a simple, reliable and proven alternative to otherwise more complex pumping systems or low level outlet works. In a simple form they consist of a pipeline constructed over the top of an embankment or high topographic feature, connecting a source pond to a receiving pond or channel (see Photograph 1). The syphon action is initiated by removing air from the pipeline (priming) using simple devices which can be purchased ?off the shelf?. Once primed, the syphon flow rate can be controlled or stopped using conventional gate, valve, orifice plate or other devices. Repriming is not required even if the flow is stopped, provided the syphon is not drained. A limiting factor in considering a syphon as a design option is the maximum lift (i.e., vertical distance from source pond level to summit of syphon) which is approximately 9 metres, or less, dependent on syphon pipe features and site conditions. Pipeline syphons can be quickly constructed from readily available materials including steel, polyethylene and PVC pipe. They are particularly well suited to many of the unique conditions often encountered at minesites. This paper identifies situations that can sometimes be best resolved using pipeline syphons. It provides basic principles for pipeline syphon design and includes case histories of their successful application.
