P.T. Freeport Indonesia's latest expansion has increased total mill throughput to 125,000 dry metric tonnes per day. The most recent expansion included the installation of a Semi Autogenous Mill designed to treat more ore than any other single SAG mill currently operating in the world. Also included in the expansion were two large ball mills, rougher and cleaner flotation including conventional and column cells and a regrind circuit. All equipment is supported by a modem distributed control system. This paper describes the design considerations, construction, commissioning and start-up of the SAG concentrator and support facilities and includes an overview of the oreflow and milling facilities.

"P.T. Freeport Indonesia's lrian Jaya Operation has been producing copper concentrate continuously since 1972. Numerous ore discoveries and five mill expansion programs have seen the initial milling rate of 7,200 MTPD escalate to the present rate of 125,000 MTPD, producing 2.5 million pounds of copper and 3,500 troy ounces of gold per day. The latest expansion, commissioned in February 1995, incorporates a 34 foot Semi- Autogenous Grinding (SAG) Mill, two 20'x30' Ball Mills, conventional roughing, cleaner column flotation, and attendant upgrades to the existing concentrate pumping and dewatering facilities. This paper will describe the SAG Plant flowsheet, and focus on the key training issues which contributed to a successful plant start-up.IntroductionP.T. Freeport Indonesia's operations in the Ertsberg mining district are located in the Jayawijaya Mountains of Irian Jaya, the easternmost province of the Republic of Indonesia. P.T. Freeport Indonesia (PTFI), the operator, is owned by Freeport MacMoRan Copper and Gold (81.3%), the Government of Indonesia (9.4%), and private Indonesian investors (9.4%). Geographical location, and sailing distances are provided on the attached location map.The operation stretches over 7 4 miles ( 114 km) from the dewatering and concentrate shipping facility at the Port of Amamapare on the Arafura Sea to the Grasberg open pit located at 3400m. The regional geology is covered in detail by Van Nort et al (1991 ), with current proven and probable reserves estimated at 1.13 billion metric tonnes grading 1.30% Copper, 1.42 ppm Gold, and 4.06 ppm Silver. The Grasberg open pit mining operation provides 92% of the mill feed, and is described in detail by Hickson (1991). The remainder of the mill feed is derived from several underground block caving operations. Current production rates provide a mine life in excess of 25 years. However, very favorable geology in the area leads to expectations that additional reserves will extend the life of the operation considerably."

P.T. Inco has constructed a smelter to produce 45 000 tonnes (49 500 tons) of nickel per year as a nickel matte from the lateritic ores of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The facilities include mines, five screening stations, two dryers, three novel reduction kilns, three electric furnaces, three top blown rotary converters, and associated infrastructure of port, towns and a hydroelectric generating station. The screening stations and converters are unique in the industry. The problems encountered in the construction and operation of this complex facility in remote Indonesia are described.

The I-75 Modernization Project (Segment 3) just north of Detroit, MI is being delivered as a Design-Build-Finance-Maintain (DBFM), which is a Public Private Partnership (P3). The project includes design and reconstruction of 5.5 miles of freeway, including a depressed section with a 20,630-ft long, 14.5-ft inside diameter, up to 100-ft deep stormwater tunnel, multiple drop shafts, and a pump station. The project also includes a maintenance term of 25-years. This is the first time MDOT has used a P3 delivery method for a major highway and tunnel project. This paper describes the development of the P3 documents, including performance-based tunnel and shaft technical requirements, and the approach to project risk management, financing, and insurance coverage.

St Helena tunnel is the centrepiece of the Pacific Highway upgrade from Tintenbar to Ewingsdale, abbreviated and commonly known as T2E. At the deepest point the twin tunnels run 45 m below the ridge line of St Helena Hill, located about 5 km west of Byron Bay. The tunnel breakthrough was achieved early in 2014 and the works for permanent lining will be completed in early 2015.Once the project will be handed over to the public in 2015, T2E will deliver a safer highway and uninterrupted traffic flow between New South Wales and Queensland. The design speed in the project area has been set to 110 km/h by the client Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), which will reduce the travel times between Brisbane and Ballina to just over two hours.The two tubes of the tunnel have been designed to accommodate three lanes in each direction with shoulders and walkways on either side of the carriageway. These requirements result in a huge cross-section of about 20 m width and an excavated area of about 210 m2.With the tunnel alignment being situated in basaltic rock, St Helena tunnel is conventionally driven. The selected excavation method was predominantly drill-and-blast with temporary support being installed immediately after the excavation. Despite the wide span of the tunnel, the geology allowed the tunnel perimeter to be supported by only rock bolts and a layer of shotcrete over the majority of its length.Due to environmental reasons one of the approval criteria of the project was that the tunnel must not have a detrimental long-term impact on the groundwater system within St Helena Hill. Consequently the tunnel has been designed as a fully tanked structure with a waterproofing sheet membrane installed on the temporary shotcrete.The permanent structure of the tunnel has to meet a 100-year design life and it is designed as a cast in situ concrete lining. Considering the water pressure on the lining the concrete is reinforced with a significant amount of bar reinforcement.The presented paper provides a more detailed explanation of the geology and the consequential temporary and permanent support measures together with the waterproofing system.CITATION:Mueller, A M, 2014. The Bureau of Mines conducted research to provide technical information needed to devise waste management plans for the processing of manganese nodules. Studies included summary descriptions of Pacific manganese nodules, process options and flowsheets, methods for characterizing nodules and their tailings, and results of analyses of laboratory and pilot-plant generated tailings. This information is the result of a cooperative research effort of the Bureau of Mines and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with NOAA providing funding and the Bureau conducting the research. A summary of the extensive literature review is provided for manganese nodule mineralogy, chemistry, processing techniques, and methods of analyses. Characterizations and analyses of laboratory-generated tailings and slags are given, as well as the results of the leaching studies on these waste materials. Leachability was determined by three standard leachate tests- the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) extraction procedure (EP) toxicity test, the American Society for Testing and Materials shake extraction test, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-EPA seawater elutriant test. While the wastes generated in the laboratory may not be entirely representative of those to be generated in full-scale plants, results of these studies provide a positive indication that commercial recovery of cobalt, copper, manganese, and nickel from manganese nodules would be environmentally acceptable.

Epithermal Au-Ag deposits form in the upper 1 km of the crust and are therefore best preserved in the less eroded Pacific rim arcs, although also recognised elsewhere. Two profoundly different ore fluid types give rise to low and high-sulfidation styles apparent as variations in ore and gangue mineralogy as well as characteristic zoned wall rock alteration. Low sulfidation epithermal Au deposits are derived from near neutral composite magmatic-meteoric fluids and divided into a group with a stronger intrusion association within arcs grading in time and space from: quartz-sulfide Au + Cu, to carbonate-base metal Au, and the epithermal quartz Au + Ag, whereas in strongly extensional settings the influx of meteoric waters promotes the development of chalcedony-ginguro banded Au-Ag epithermal veins. In the presence of continental crust particularly in Latin America polymetallic Ag-Au veins represent a Ag-rich equivalent of carbonate-base metal Au and passes upwards to chalcedony-ginguro Au-Ag style. By contrast high-sulfidation epithermal deposits are deposited from an acidic magmatic fluid which provided characteristic hydrothermal alteration by reaction with wall rocks grading outwards as mineral assemblages dominated by: vughy silica, alunite, pyrophyllite-diaspore, dickite-kaolin and then illite-smectite neutral clays. Au mineralisation is commonly refractory with enargite deposited dominantly later within the silica zone.Exploration for epithermal Au deposits benefits from an understanding of the controls to mineralisation which commonly give rise to the development of ore shoots with widest and highest Au grade ore zones. In low-sulfidation systems a combination of competent host rocks, dilatant structures, higher grade styles of mineralisation and efficient mechanism of Au deposition, contribute towards ore shoot formation. High-sulfidation epithermal Au systems occur in permeable volcanic and breccia host rocks which are linked by major structures to the magmatic source.CITATION:Corbett, G, 2013. Other than being used to convey fill material for the gob stowage or building of ribside packs on advancing longwell faces, pneumatic conveying has not been used for the transport of materials on a large scale in mining operations. The technique is extensively used in the wood products industry for conveying wood chips, limestone and other ingredients for the manufacture of paper, for the transfer from railcars, barges or ships to silos or stockpiles and further transfer into the pulp mills. This method of material transfer has the distinct advantage of transporting suitable material over horizontal and vertical distances within the same system. In considering material associated with mining, this includes, ore, coal and rock up to 4 inch cubed size, throughputs of 200 tons per hour over horizontal distances of 3000 feet or vertical lifts of 2000 feet. In recent years tests have been carried out to determine the physical and economic limitations of pneumatic hoisting, the results of which have led to the installation of two fully productive coal hoisting systems at mines of the National Coal Board in Great Britain. The equipment used for the pneumatic hoisting of coal or waste rock is described in this paper, together with a brief history of the tests which led up to the installation of the two hoisting systems in Great Britain.

This paper will discuss the strategy and processes used to determine contract packaging and contracting delivery methods for the various project elements with an emphasis on the tunnels and trenchless crossings. Prior Authority experience and the rigorous risk-based approach to develop the preferred alignments played a large role in determining the outcomes along with schedule concerns and permitting and easement acquisition.

Commercially available flotation technologies for recovery of mineral fines have remained essentially unchanged for several decades. Recent studies have focused simply on improving mechanical and open column cells. Such studies have explored different control strategies and have aimed to improve reagent selectivity, fine air bubble generation and particle-air contact. However, no study has questioned whether current techniques are the most efficient technology for recovering mineral fines. Given that both mechanical and open column cells have a widely accepted carrying capacity limitation, the lack of extensive research into an alternative technology is surprising. Most recently, open column flotation has become an entrenched technology, and it is undermining the efficient recovery of mineral fines worldwide. An alternative exists. Packed column flotation overcomes the above-stated problems as the technology surpasses the carrying capacity limitation of current means by several-fold and almost always achieves the best performance in many comparative pilot tests and full-scale plant operations. Filling a column with packing plates creates a network of sloped walls capable of supporting a froth bed many times deeper than conventional machines. Having froth up to 75 percent of the total column volume tolerates all feed changes encountered in the plant environment and permits maximum flexibility in concentrate quality control. Furthermore, its scale-up is straightforward by increasing column volume or the number of interconnected small cells. As the air breaks upon rising and is distributed horizontally through packing plates, the air spargers can be replaced with a simple blower, resulting in considerable savings in operation and maintenance costs. Packed flotation technology provides a break-through solution for the separation of fine and ultra-fine minerals. Its simplicity, superior performance, and low cost structure make it an appealing alternative to current technologies and allow greater flexibility in downstream processing. Future industrial applications include a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic ores. This paper focuses on some recent scale-up campaigns for nickel and copper sulphide flotation applications compared directly to conventional equipment.

In the details, this paper has the aim to present the excellent results obtained by integrated steel plant where an EAF is fed with high quality hot ENERGIRON DRI. The recent technology developments, combined with the affirmed basic process design, contributed to further maximize the energy of the DRI, reaching the EAF at temperatures above 600°C with a carbon content up to 3.5%, as confirmed by plant data. These improved input material characteristics resulted in reduced electrical energy consumption and increased liquid steel production.

Two commercially available through-the-Earth (TTE) communications systems were evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. One system utilises magnetic field (H-field) antennae while the other system utilises electric field (E-field) antennae to achieve communication. A large portion of this mine is overlain by an inactive gas-oil field composed of densely spaced wells. This feature provided a unique opportunity to determine the impact of cased wells on both TTE technologies. The following communication modes were investigated: surface to underground, underground to surface, underground to underground and real-time two-way communications. Standard deployments of the TTE systems using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations under certain circumstances. As a result, the design and deployment that will optimise TTE transmissions are unique to each system and to the specific area of the mine. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. Massive sulfide ores and Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitates represent two extremes of a spatial continuum of hydrothermal deposition along oceanic ridges. Elemental variations across this continuum are of interest to economic geologists as a prospective geochemical exploration tool. Theoretical considerations suggest that certain physical and chemical parameters can be used to model compositional variations within the far-field (i.e., Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide) component as a function of distance from ridge axis; however, testing and verification of such models generally has been precluded because the few available distal hydrothermal sediment sequences have been sampled at low resolution and/or are highly diluted with biogenic components (e.g., siliceous and calcareous tests). Recent ocean drilling (ODP Leg 145; Sites 885/886) in the North Pacific successfully recovered an extensive record of "biogenic-free" distal hydrothermal precipitates from an area approximately 60 km south of the Chinook Trough at longitude 168.1 °W. Geophysical and geomorphological evidence suggests the Chinook Trough is the southern lithospheric scar marking initiation of late Cretaceous north-south rifting, implying that recovered hydrothermal materials record distal hydrothermal precipitation from the now-subducted Kula-Pacific spreading ridge. The Chinook Trough hydrothermal sequence is a continuous 15 my record of "biogenic-free" hydrothermal Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide precipitation mixed with eolian clays. It was deposited during the late Cretaceous, early Paleocene (80-65 Ma) as the perpendicular distance from ridge axis increased from 75 to 600 km. A high-resolution geochemical analysis of this hydrothermal sequence reveals distinct trends for the up-core (equivalent to increasing distance from ridge) distribution patterns of Fe, Sc, As, and rare earth elements (REE). Evaluation and subsequent development of a quarry in east-central Missouri was based on a general but brief examination of outcrops and core from five (5) test holes. Neither core, outcrops, nor existing quarries in the general area gave any indication of potential major problems. In the third year of operation large areas of collapse rubble, consisting of green shale and large blocks of limestone and sandstone, were encountered. Their size and random distribution resulted in both blasting and quality control problems. By the fourth year of operation, production costs became prohibitive and the site was abandoned. Prior to dismantling the plant a geologic investigation, which included shallow seismic and resistivity surveys, was made of the unmined portion of the lease. The collapse dolines appear to be related to structure and predate development of the modern topography. Surface indications of these features are few. The seismic profiles were especially helpful in plotting their distribution. Geologic relationships and seismic data developed at this site are being related to similar suspect areas in Missouri and have been useful in their evaluation.

The South Island of New Zealand comprises a collage of distinct tectonostratigraphic terranes. Some tectonic models predict that these terranes formed on or near the margin of Gondwanaland. However, geologic evidence suggests that some of these terranes may be exotic. Over 400 samples from 30 sites were collected from the Brookstreet terrane within the Takitimu Mountains. The section includes the early Permian Takitimu Group and the late Permian White Hill Intrusive Suite. Over 80% of the rocks show a partial or complete regnetization in the present field due to recent acquistion of VRM. Although some remagnetization of the Takitimu Group occurred during the emplacement of the White Hill Intrusives, both early and late Permian direction have been isolated. These directions indicate a mid-latitude origin for the Brookstreet terrane, and suggest a strong clockwise rotation between early and late Permian time. A published paleomagnetic result from the younger, but related, Murihiku terrane suggests that the Brookstreet terrane was sutured to the margin of Gondwanaland by the late Triassic, or that the Brookstreet and Murihiku are two distinct terranes.

Magnetic studies have been carried out on 88 surface and 157 underground samples from the Coronation Mine area of northern Saskatchewan. The intensity of the surface samples was compared to trace element determinations from the same locality. A good correlation was found between the titaniferous constituent of the rocks and the intensity of magnetization. From the direction of the remanent magnetism, two virtual geomagnetic poles were determined -latitude 12° 54' North, longitude 158" 17' West; and latitude 23" 42' North, longitude 163° 45' West. The sulphide ore specimens showed anisotropic susceptibility characteristics. A relationship was found between the measured maximum susceptibility values of the ore specimens and the direction of the tectonic forces which are considered to have formed the structure at the Coronation mine. Introduction T HIS paper summarizes the results of a study of the magnetic properties of samples from well-known Precambrian formations. The observed data give information for an interpretation of the magnetic field conditions in Precambrian times. The high magnetic intensity values indicate the importance of the study

On a world scale, many Mid-Proterozoic fluvial sediments are prospective for low grade, large-tonnage gold deposits. A significant area of the Northern Territory is covered by such Mid-Proterozoic sediments, the gold potential of which has been barely tested. The geological knowledge of these sediments is summarised. The Westmoreland Conglomerate, the basal Mid-Proterozoic formation of the McArthur Basin, has been subjected to detailed sedimentological studies in order to determine the paleoenvironments and to assess the possibility of paleoplacer occurrences. The results indicate that the sandstones and conglomerates of the formation were deposited by braided rivers and debris flows as an alluvial fan which originated in source areas to the north east. The formation contains several upward-fining cycles of sedimentation, which are related to repeated periods of uplift in the source areas. The formation of placer-type gold occurrences is possible in such depositional environments. Very limited heavy mineral sampling has indicated a cassiterite- wolframite-gold suite in the sediments of the Westmoreland Conglomerate. Disconformities at the base of sedimentation cycles are deemed to be the most likely sites for large-tonnage paleoplacer concentrations.

Palladium finely dispersed in a substrate of kieselguhr, Pd/k for short, has been successfully used for hydrogen storage, separation and pumping for a number of years at the Savannah River Site (SRS). Recently SRS has developed a new pd/k flow through bed (FTB) prototype for separating hydrogen from other gases and simultaneously storing the hydrogen on palladium. The FTB uses single-pass liquid nitrogen cooling during hydrogen absorption/separation/storage and electrical heating for desorption/unloading of hydrogen. Fourteen absorption-desorption or loading/unloading cycles using hydrogen have been conducted with the new FTB prototype. Test results show that all design performance objectives have been successfully achieved: recover 295% of hydrogen gas from feed gas, produce 99.9% hydrogen product gas and < 5% hydrogen in discharge gas. This paper will discuss characteristics of the palladium-coated kieselguhr or diatomaceous earth, design and operation of the FTB, and results of performance tests such as separation efficiency, hydrogen storage capacity and system heat transfer characteristics.

An integrated palynological and sedimentological investigation of four wells from the eastern margin of the Gippsland Basin has resulted in a scheme for classification of palynofacies in this area. Thirteen different palynofacies assemblages are recognised and assigned to particular environments based on the enclosing sediments, which range from alluvial, through coastal barrier to continental shelf environments. Close correlation is observed between the interpreted energy regime of the palynofacies assemblage, and that of the enclosing sediments. Assemblages characterised as reworking surfaces can be correlated with unconformity producing events (ie tectonic activity associated with the opening of the Tasman Sea), and some of the minor eustatic sea level Changes.
