"Operator competency is an important factor in the safe and successful operation of today’s complex processes. Competent process unit operators deliver superior performance and results. In greenfield projects, operator competency is particularly critical, as the lack of specific operations experience must be offset with proven practical knowledge and skills to avoid mistakes that can cost millions in terms of start-up delays, production losses and equipment damage. It is, therefore, important to know precisely what competencies are required for a project or site, and what any gaps in operator competency need to be addressed and improved. The success of plant commissioning, start-up and sustainable operations is directly tied to operator competency. The significant investments required for new projects, the exploitation of more challenging ore bodies, and the increasing complexity of plant operations have placed renewed emphasis on the need for competent operators. Furthermore, many large capital projects are being developed in remote regions, often with ties to the delivery of social benefits for the local population in terms of jobs, training and other development opportunities. While automation and processing technologies have helped do more with less, indicators now point to a bottleneck in human performance limiting operational results.Automation industry development in managing abnormal situations, including solutions for simulation and operator training, has produced applications to provide customized and flexible training methods. This paper will discuss tools to automate the operator competency process in order to guide trainers to effectively teach, measure, control, provide feedback, and monitor operator skills. Today’s competency management solutions can be effectively applied throughout the course of an operator’s professional life, as a guide to hiring new operators, for developing competencies to support operations, and also to develop and refine best practices and share lessons learned."

The quality of Lime Cement (L/C) columns is to a great extent dependent on the installation procedure. At a site in the south of Sweden, the client reported problems with the installed columns. To evaluate the operator and equipment dependent part of the installation, Hercules Grundläggning AB was appointed as a competitor to the site contractor. The purpose was to install a number of L/C columns with equal installation parameters for both contractors. A total of 65 test columns were installed in June 1999. The geology is a typical Swedish organic soil profile with a top layer of peat overlying gyttja and clay. Two different binders were used in the comparison; blast furnace slag with cement and lime with cement. After installation, the quality of the columns was monitored by penetration tests and a column sampler for extracting whole columns. The column penetration test were performed 28 and 134 days after installation and extraction 134 days after installation. Inspection and tests of the extracted columns showed that by using a fully computer controlled procedure, the contractor produces columns of superior quality and homogeneity.

A study conducted at a mine site that used traditional field surveying and physical hole spot markings bench marked their combined drill and blast performance. The analysis of the operational expenditure (OPEX) improvement determined there were many measurable cost improvements. A primary factor that most operations have to deal with is over drilling of holes. This alone impacts the cost due to nonproductive labor allocations, excessive explosive costs, increased drill tool costs, increased drilling costs and has an impact on the downstream operation cost such as digging the shot material. Other related investigations also show a downstream impact of poor fragmentation on digging payload tonnes, cycle times, haulage payload tonnes, time to load a truck and the number of passes to load the tuck. The intent of this presentation is to draw attention to aspects of mining we understand but may be missing the big picture effects, such as the ability to reduce the operational expenditures consistently to impact the bottom line. The target audience is across the board from owner operators, drill and blast contractors to blasting contractors. Everyone can benefit from these improvements.

When Robert H. Richards wrote Ore Dressing, the famous four-volume work published in the first decade of this century, the ore dresser was still largely concerned, with the mechanical treatment of ores. Since then, however, economics have transformed him into a mineral processing engineer who must increasingly deal with closely integrated facilities designed to produce a commodity for manufacturing. Moreover, this change will grow marked as the complex low- grade ores of the future make it ever more necessary for him not only to use the best combination of pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and physical separation processes, but also to integrate these processes at the mine site. Nor are economic pressures the only ones propelling the processing engineer into a new era. The ecology drive has thrown him into a new situation in which his economic base is radically altered, and it could well precipitate as drastic a revolution in his technology as that which took place when flotation was developed.

A concepção de desenvolvimento sustentável tem resultado no aumento de pressões ambientais para a melhoria da eficiência na utilização de recursos, e para a significativa redução das emissões e da geração de resíduos. No processo de fabricação de aço nas siderúrgicas com fornos elétricos a arco ocorre a geração do resíduo sólido denominado pó de aciaria elétrica (PAE). O PAE é constituído por diferentes óxidos metálicos. Contém cromo, chumbo e cádmio e, por isso, é classificado como resíduo classe I – Perigoso pela NBR 10004 [1]. Gerado em grandes quantidades diariamente em todo o país, o PAE é disposto principalmente em aterros industriais. A indústria da construção civil, devido a quantidade de matérias-primas consumida e variedade de produtos disponíveis – cimento, concreto, agregado, cerâmica, entre outros, apresenta-se como alternativa para a reciclagem de resíduos gerados em outros setores da econômica. Estudos indicam o potencial uso do PAE na produção de materiais da construção civil, tais como cimento e concreto. O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar uma revisão da literatura sobre a viabilidade técnica da adição do PAE ao cimento como alternativa de valorização desse resíduo. Os estudos sugerem que em quantidades próximas a 1%, a adição de PAE não afeta de forma significativa as propriedades do cimento.

Esto se produciría a partir del inicio de operaciones del citado proyecto, cuyo titular es la empresa Macusani Yellowcake S.A.C, subsidiaria de American Lithium PLC, con sede en Toronto, Canadá. Este proyecto aspira a convertirse en uno de los mayores depósitos de litio en roca (el sexto en el mundo), cuya extracción se realizaría a tajo abierto y su procesamiento a través de métodos tradicionales (chancado y lixiviación).

3D modelling can be used throughout the mine lifecycle and has proven to be a powerful tool for consultants and mining companies. One of the most significant benefits of 3D models is their ability to enhance collaboration, communication, and understanding between the mine owner, design engineers, and other relevant stakeholders that have a shared interest in responsible mining and site management. Tailings and mine waste management is an interdisciplinary effort that requires effective coordination and communication between a wide range of consultants, operators, and stakeholders alike. The increased emphasis on Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) highlights the importance for mine operators to engage and communicate with all parties involved in the planning, permitting, operation, and closure of mine sites. 3D models are valuable tools that can be used for development of geotechnical conceptual models, allowing for improved design and monitoring of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs). A clear conceptual understanding of a TSFs subsurface geology and foundation characterization is essential for proper tailings management, design, and planning. Visualization with 3D modelling can simplify the interpretation of the, oftentimes intricate, mine sight subsurface settings and allows for quick and effective geotechnical conceptualization. 3D models can be used to identify data gaps, optimize field investigations, and streamline the development of numerical stability or groundwater models. They can help communicate the complex nature of subsurface and TSF interactions in a clear, concise, and accurate manner to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders. This paper discusses some of the benefits of 3D modelling in relation to geotechnical analysis for tailings management and provides methodologies for how to improve upon some methodologies that are considered industry standards.

Many opportunities for cost savings have been identified involving energy efficiency, process improvements and the use of new electro technologies. This paper will provide an overview of some of the projects that have been implemented and those that are presently being evaluated. Mining faces many environmental, social and regulatory liabilities of which water management is just one. Others include site rehabilitation, carbon emissions, biodiversity offsets, strategic cropping land, subsidence, and noise and dust generation. Management of these liabilities is commonly seen as a cost of doing business and each is often independently addressed, bypassing the opportunity to reduce costs through integrated approaches. Furthermore, approaches to dealing with these liabilities tend to be constrained by a prevailing culture of engineered solutions and lack of appreciation of risk associated with alternative and hybrid alternative-engineered solutions. Suboptimal outcomes can also be reinforced by rigid regulatory constraints. While the cost of addressing operational liabilities may be a small proportion of overall mine management costs, failure to do so effectively may influence social licence to operate and, as recently demonstrated by the decision of the NSW Land and Environment Court to block expansion of the Warkworth Mine near Singleton, absolute licence to operate.Integration of environmental, social and regulatory liabilities with value-creating and risk-reduction opportunities such as beneficial water use, carbon bio-sequestration, habitat connectivity, keyline farming, improved grazing design and management systems, windbreaks and visual screens, presents opportunities to reduce risk and create value. This potential may achieve overall improved outcomes in both economic and non-economic mine performance criteria.Two case studies in beneficial use of waste water from the mining and coal seam gas (CSG) sectors (which operate under different legislation) will be used to illustrate the potential to address mine development, operational and closure liabilities by understanding opportunities to reduce risk and create value through a holistic water management framework. The technical requirements and alternative approaches to beneficial use of mine water are addressed, along with the direct economic benefits for mine operational costs and opportunities to positively engage communities and build resilience into social licence to operate. "It is now possible to use 3D X-ray tomography analysis for plant-site characterization of coarse particles at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. This is quite a significant advance in X-ray tomography technology and should be useful for plant-site coarse particle characterization (size, shape, composition, density, texture, grain exposure, mineral liberation) with a response time of minutes after receiving the sample. Applications in the mineral industries are discussed including the coal industry, aggregate industry, metal mining and the processing of industrial minerals. INTRODUCTION Plant-site characterization of coarse particles at coal preparation plants, crushed stone/aggregate plants, and mineral processing plants is needed to improve plant capacity, product quality, and/or process efficiency. Not much on-line coarse particle characterization is done at these plants. Some limited information regarding particle size is obtained on-line from reflected light images using systems such as the OPSA, Split, and WipFrag analyzers. Even laboratory analysis of coarse particles has been difficult because of the large amount of sample required to insure statistical significance of the results. During the past decades laboratory 3D characterization of particles from energy and mineral resources by X-ray tomography has been demonstrated and used to good advantage [1, 2]. 3D X-ray tomographic analysis had its origin in the medical services industry; it is used to provide internal images of the human body and now has also been developed for non-medical applications [3]. Figure 1 shows a schematic diagram for the cone-beam geometry micro-CT system. In our case X-rays from a microfocus X-ray generator are partially attenuated by the sample (a packed bed of particles) that is made to rotate in equal steps in a full circle about a single axis of the particle sample. At each rotational position, the surviving X-ray photons are detected by a planar two-dimensional array (image intensifier) large enough to contain the shadow of the specimen. These two dimensional projection images are collected using conventional video technology. The video signal for each projection is then converted to a two-dimensional digital array by an image processing system. Finally, a three-dimensional image is reconstructed from the collected set of projection images. With the availability of automated high speed X-ray tomography [4] it now seems possible to do plant-site particle characterization at a sampling rate of about 3 kg/min for particles which range in size from 150 mm to 1 mm at a voxel resolution of about 150 microns. Planning for a circular economy allows for previously untapped market opportunities to be explored, resulting in new, innovative revenue generating opportunities, while also reducing environmental impacts. In particular, rare earth elements (REE) are in rising demand as they are key components of over 200 products across a wide range of applications (Xie et al, 2023) including renewable energy technologies. There is a geographical disparity in deposits, with China being the top producer, generating 70 per cent of global production in 2022 (Laboure, 2023). This single dominating source has created supply chain concentration and hence supply risks for other nations, providing a driver for finding alternative sources, such as mine-influenced water (MIW) and tailings. In this study, Isle presents a robust due diligence methodology for undertaking a global horizon scan into REE recovery technology, for a large mining company, from tailings decant water on a specific site. Previous studies of the tailings decant water at this site had shown potentially significant concentrations of both heavy and light REE, but challenges such as high flow, very low pH and high concentrations of iron had previously made recovery unfeasible. Due to these challenges, the horizon scan focused on technologies that had the potential for selective recovery, despite the challenges with water quality, and considered a range of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs). This included an adsorption-based process that has the potential to selectively separate individual REE, and a polymer based selective flocculation technology.

Quang Ninh province is the most significant coal producing region in the north of Vietnam. The Nui Beo Coal Company (NBCC) operates open pit mines in Quang Ninh province and the waste overburden produced is dumped as sidehill fill in the Chinh Bac waste dump site. In the past, no special consideration has been given to the environmental impacts during the dumping operations. The mine waste is transported in trucks from the mine site to the dumping site and the loading, hauling and dumping operations are the main sources of dust emission. Rain events, especially during the rainy season, cause the generation of contaminated surface water as well as seepage of water through the dump at a number of locations. The existence of cracks at the top of the dump can pose serious stability problems with heavy rain events leading to failure of slopes which can potentially disturb vast areas of land currently used for agricultural purposes and human settlement. For sustainable development at the Chinh Bac waste dump site in the future, apart from the social and economic considerations to be assessed, there is an absolute necessity for environmental protection measures to be in place both during and after the dumping of the mine waste overburden. Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam (RAME) is working to develop and implement concepts for the mitigation of environmental problems emerging from dust, contaminated water and lacking slope stability to ensure successful rehabilitation of the coal mine waste dumps in the north of Vietnam. Within the framework of RAME, the Institute of Mining Engineering I (RWTH Aachen University) is managing and working to develop the stabilisation concepts for the solid mine waste dump in collaboration with the Chair of Geotechnical Engineering (RWTH Aachen University), Brenk Systemplanung and the Vietnamese group of companies VINACOMIN (Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group). The most economical and environmentally sound operations, as well as locally adaptable environmental protection measures, are essential for the sustainable development of the dumping operations at Chinh Bac dump. This paper describes the dump site and the sustainable development possibilities with an emphasis on the environmental protection and stability problems at the Chinh Bac waste dump.

The mining and minerals processing industry is gradually being digitalised to improve efficiency and reduce waste. One aspect of this transition is to ensure that relevant process-data in sufficient quality and quantity is given to the operator in the right format and at the right time to improve decision-making. Augmented reality (AR) can serve as a potential ICT-based support tool for human operators to achieve this goal. With AR, virtual information is combined with the real world in real-time. Therefore, AR technology has the potential to fulfil the need for improved data visualisation in Industry 4.0. This article is the result of a collaborative effort of Chalmers University of Technology and RWTH Aachen University to identify selected state-of-the-art applications of AR that are currently being applied in the mining and minerals industry or selected related industries. This paper aims to show opportunities for the application of AR in the mining and mineral processing industry with selected conceptual applications. This paper concludes with several requirements identified as necessary to implement the conceptual applications of AR in the mining and minerals industry. To the average mine operator, the implementation of environmental regulations are viewed as a drain on the profitability of the mine. Since the birth of environmental awareness in the late 1960's, which led to the passage of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) in 1969, and through the publicity brought about by the discovery of Love Canal in 1978, the public are clamoring for increased environmental protection. It should be emphasized that the concern regarding the issues of the handling and disposal of nuclear and toxic wastes is not limited to a few overzealous environmental advocates. Toxic waste issues have "grass roots" interest and support. A reflection of this support has been the passage of key pieces of federal legislation. . Of particular interest are the following acts: Clean Water, Toxic Substances Control, Surface Mine Land Reclamation, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). The last act is often referred to as "Superfund". Both RCRA and CERCLA have been re-authorized and amended, and in their re-authorization they have been substantially strengthened. Of the last two pieces of legislation, RCRA is the most powerful in that it governs the handling of hazardous wastes from "birth to grave". CERCLA was established to cleanup abandoned waste sites which are threatening human health or the environment. These cleanups can be undertaken by the government and then billed back to the previous owners or to the disposers at the sites.

The current status of battery collection and recycling schemes in Australia are explored in light of current developments in product stewardship and increasing pressure to decrease materials going to landfill by originating equipment manufacturers. Used consumer batteries, both single cycle and rechargeable contain a mixture of valuable metals and potentially toxic materials that may become a resource/revenue stream to offset the cost of disposal/recycling. Although the volume of batteries discarded in Australia is modest compared to other global population centres, the expected increase in battery use with increasing equipment portability and future developments in the automotive industry, provide an opportunity to recycle. The requirements for a battery recycling facility in Australia and the most promising processing platforms that may exploit the resource with enough flexibility to cope with battery developments and market trends, are explored.

Thank you for the opportunity to speak at this important conference attended by aspiring mining professionals, some of whom will become the leaders of the mineral resources industry that forms the solid foundation of AustraliaÆs past and that will fuel the exciting growth of AustraliaÆs future.I want to briefly touch on the history of our business, then look at the opportunities that exist in the contract mining industry and finally comment on what the educators need to consider in their curriculum to meet the needs of our business. Byrnecut started out as an idea in early-1987 developed by a group of four mining people. At the time the industry was on the high end of a mining boom, the era of the Bonds, Connels, Skases and so on. Riding on this wave of euphoria we borrowed $600 000 from the National Australia Bank and, without having enough knowledge to lose sleep over the potential risks, started business in mid-1987. The euphoria quickly evaporated with the 1987 October stock market crash. The bank pulled our overdraft, equipment finance rates increased to over 20 per cent per annum and my house was mortgagedseveral times over. The business learning curve was extreme for a young mining engineer who had developed his trade in the relatively sheltered environment of a large public mining house, namely WMC. We were somewhat bitter that the banks had done a runner. We were a private company, backing the business with personal assets with our shoulders to the wheel, whilst the Bonds of the world had theirnoses in the trough ripping off mum and dad shareholders. All of this had a sobering effect, namely keep your feet on the ground, stick to the knitting, work hard and worship cash flow. Since that stressful but adrenaline pumping beginning the company now employs over 600 people and is now working for major mining houses at over a dozen locations in Australia, east Africa and WesternEurope and the National bank is again our banker. On this basis I consider myself qualified for the subject of this speech.
