"As the International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) enters its 35th year in 2015, it is time to look back and identify the areas that need to be emphasized and to look forward to see what areas need to be researched in the future. In the past three decades, ground control has made a tremendous advancement, and many case studies published in the 36 volumes of proceedings have demonstrated its important role in the daily mining operations. However, there is still plenty of room for improvements. This paper discusses the research needs in 12 subject areas, including mine geology, rock property, zones of disturbance in overburden, computer modeling, underground stress measurements, research method, roof bolting, coal pillars, failures, subsidence, shield supports, and coal bumps.INTRODUCTIONThe International Conference on Ground Control in Mining (ICGCM) was founded in 1981. Since then, 1,546 papers have been published in the 36 conference proceedings, including the three surface subsidence workshops held in the 1981, 1986, and 1992. All types of topical areas regarding mining, from geotechnical core loggings in the exploration phase through backfilling after mining to finally spoil piles stability on the surface, have been addressed. A review of these papers, and other related literature as well, indicate that ground control has developed to become an inseparable part of mine design and a problem-solving tool for safe production.After 34 years, it is time to look back and identify the areas that need to be emphasized and to look forward to see what areas need to be researched in the future. There is no doubt that the conference series has achieved the goal for which it was originally designed: to provide an annual forum for the exchange of information among the researchers, government regulators, equipment manufacturers, consultants, service providers, and—above all—mine operators. There have been many papers addressing the application of ground control techniques for successful mine design and safe production, and, without these papers, many projects would have failed. In fact, the conference emphasis on application types of papers may have steered too far toward the application side. A review of the conference papers shows that papers have been leaning mostly toward the applied side, leaving most, if not all, fundamental issues behind in nearly every topical area. This paper addresses research needs in 12 topical areas: mine geology, rock property, zones of disturbance in overburden, computer modeling, underground stress measurements, research method, roof bolting, coal pillars, failures, subsidence, shield supports, and coal bumps."

"This paper presents early results from a case study at the Mount Polley porphyry copper mine in British Columbia, Canada. Daily mineralogical data was acquired and reconciled with daily plant assay and recovery balances to interrogate the mineralogical controls on plant performance. After commissioning, the Minesite machine operated smoothly and reliably, creating daily data to generate mineralogical balances around the circuit for a period of several weeks. The key data, on final products were produced within 13 hours of the end of the respective operating period. The resulting information allowed for a greater understanding of the opportunities and limitations of the Mount Polley metallurgy. In this paper, how this information can be used to help long term strategic planning for the operation, as well as mine planning and production forecasting and the fine tuning of day to day mill operations is described. Early data available at the time of preparing this paper indicated that roughly 40% of the sulphide losses, or 32% of total copper losses existed as low grade inclusions in +75 micron tails. This represented the dominant form of long term copper losses, demonstrated repeatedly in the routine analytical data. However, on a day-to-day basis, the amount of copper present as chrysocolla is the major driver behind variations in total copper recovery. The degree to which this influences mill recovery is valuable to the geologist or mine planner. As they are armed with mineral speciation information for future ores, this will allow for improved mine planning, prediction of copper recoveries and production forecasting. The data was also started to find value in the mill by showing what caused sulphide losses. In the roughers, for example, the data showed poor recovery was the result of poor flotation performance and not any changes the speciation of copper sulphides or their liberation characteristics."

Reaction between xanthate ions in solution and oxidized compounds present on the surface of galena to form lead xanthate is considered to be a side reaction not contributing to flotation, although accounting for some consumption of reagent. The direct reaction of lead sulphide with xanthate and oxygen to form lead xanthate is the most significant to flotation. Coadsorntion of dixanthogen is also involved. Previous work has shown lead recovery in lead rougher flotation to be a function of m [H+] where: m = concentration of xanthate in solution rHl = hydrogen ion concentration. A plausible explanation for this relationship is suggest-ed. Likewise, the experimental findings that the amount of xanthate adsorbed under certain conditions is a function of m'[H+] are explained in terms of reaction between xanthate ions and soluble basic lead salts such as PbO.PbS04? It is also shown that m[H+] should have a constant value in lead cleaners operating at a higher pH than the roughers. This conclusion is confirmed by plant data, and the value of the constant agrees well with the calculated value. The finding is useful in mill control.

Alkyl hydroxamic acid was shown to be a suitable collector for the flotation of pyrochlore from carbonatite niobium oxide ores. In the direct batch rougher flotation from the ore without desliming, over 85% of the pyrochlore can be recovered at about 30% mass pull. Cleaner flotation tests showed that the rougher concentrate can be upgraded. The adsorption mechanisms of octyl hydroxamic acid (OHA) were studied by using high purity pyrochlore and calcite mineral samples and employing analytical measurements such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV/VIS spectroscopy. FTIR showed a shift of the vibrational frequencies of the carbonyl group in hydroxamic acid after adsorption on pyrochlore and calcite, and the shift was more pronounced on pyrochlore. XPS results indicated a lowering of the binding energies (chemical shift) of Nb3d5/2 and Ca2p3/2 electrons on pyrochlore, and the lowering of the binding energies of Ca2p3/2 electrons on calcite, again with the shift being more pronounced on pyrochlore. The results indicated hydroxamic acid formed stronger complexes with pyrochlore than with calcite. Adsorption isotherms indicated that OHA adsorbed more on pyrochlore than on calcite at low concentration. At high concentrations, the adsorption densities on both minerals were similar. All results explained the observed selectivity of the reagents in the flotation of the carbonatite niobium oxide ores.

The paper presents a study on the oxidation of polymetallic gold ore by oxygen in an autoclave. It presents optimum parameters of autoclave leaching of sulphide refractory ore in self-generated sulphuric acid solutions aiming to get products with favourable technological characteristics from which precious and other useful metals can be recovered. A high partial oxygen pressure (1.5 MPa to 2 MPa), high leaching temperature (190°C to 200°C), pulp density 80 g/L to 240 g/L, ore fraction size 76 µm and leaching time up to 4 hours yield good results in rich ores. The full extent of copper and zinc conversion as well as a high extent of iron conversion has been achieved, while lead, gold and silver and a minor part of iron remain as a solid residue among gangue minerals.

The blasting work to construct a subway in Seoul, Korea have often caused increased neighbor’s complaints because of ground vibration. In order to prevent the damage to the structure, it was necessary to predict the level of blasting induced vibration and to determine the maximum charge weight per delay within an allowable vibration level. The effect of blasting pattern, rock strength and different explosives on the blast-induced ground vibration was studied to determine the maximum charge weight per delay within a given vibration level. The blasting vibration was measured from 10 sites along the subway line in Seoul and an empirical particle velocity equation from over 100 test data was obtained, V=K(D/W1’3 )-” , where the values for n and K are estimated to be 1.7 to 1 S and 48 to 138 respectively.

Archaeological and ethnographic work during the last century has shown clearly that metals have played a small but important role in prehistoric Arctic cultures. For at least the past several millenia both iron and copper have been used in the North, primarily for blades, projectile points, knives, awls, engraving tools, fishhooks, scrapers and axes. In addition they were used for joining purposes as staples and rivets. It is of great interest to enquire into the origins of these metals. In this connection one begins with the observation that to date there has been no clear evidence for the smelting or melting of metals in the Arctic prior to the arrival of Europeans. This can be explained partly by the absence of traditional pyrotechnologies such as the high-temperature firing of ceramics and the heat treatment of bone and wood. Another factor which surely inhibited the development of smelting/ melting operations is the relative absence of wood in the region. The production of charcoal for smelting requires large quantities of wood, to the extent that the desertification of a number of areas in the Old World is believed by some to have been at least partly caused by charcoal production. In the North this was obviously not possible. Thus the Arctic peoples were restricted to using native (naturally occurring) metals and metals obtained by various direct and indirect forms of contact with areas of the world where smelting was practiced. Both of these sources were important in the case of iron; we know that meteoritic iron, telluric (native) iron and smelted wrought iron were all used in the Arctic. These three types of iron will be considered in tum.

"It is relatively well-established in the literature that the flotation of calcium minerals using fatty acids as collector is very sensitive to the process water composition. In particular, hard waters have often been reported to strongly reduce the target mineral recoveries due to the formation of insoluble compounds such as calcium and / or magnesium dioleate, thus reducing the amount of collector available for adsorption onto the mineral surface. In this study, the flotation of a fluorite pre-concentrate was performed with tall oil, an industrial collector essentially containing fatty acids. The tests were performed in a variety of synthetic waters to simulate multiple degrees of water hardness, and to differentiate the role of magnesium and calcium ions on the flotation performance. The flotation tests revealed that, under the studied conditions, a significant difference between flotation in calcium-rich and magnesium-rich waters was observed, suggesting strong ion-specific effects in the system. Specifically, calcium-rich waters slightly improved the fluorite recovery, whereas magnesium-rich waters caused a decrease in recovery by as much as 20%. This paper is focused on the flotation kinetics aspect of the system. This approach highlighted the interesting finding that calcium ions did not simply increase the fluorite recovery, but also significantly increased its flotation kinetics. The magnesium ions, on the other hand, had the exact opposite effect.INTRODUCTIONAs the mining industry is facing an increasing number of issues related to its fresh water consumption, the idea of using alternative water sources for mineral beneficiation is gaining significant momentum. As a result, a proper understanding of the role of water chemistry in flotation is becoming more and more urgent, leading to an increasing number of studies on this topic."

Precast prestressed concrete piles designed to be end-bearing in a sand stratum at Drax Power Station met with extremely variable resistance during driving. Some piles came to virtual refusal almost immediately on entering the sand whereas others were driven to considerable penetration with very low resistance. Redriving and load tests on piles experiencing low resistance on initial drive showed that take up in strength occurred over a relatively short period of time. Investigations involving the use of pneumatic piezometers revealed the development of significant excess pore pressures during driving. Samples from boreholes showed that piles met the least resistance when the sand had a high silt content. Comparison with the original site investigation data demonstrated the difficulties in predicting detailed pile behaviour. The varied behaviour could not be related to the original borehole logs or to SPT or static cone penetrometer results. The factors controlling pile driving behaviour were essentially geological and could only be explained with reference to local soil grading.

The mining industry’s attention has shifted over the last decade with the recovery from the downturn resulting in greater development of innovation and new work methods in a bid to remain competitive and deliver higher productivity. The emphasis on cost reduction to improve profit margins has primarily been the focus of the “work smarter” campaigns embraced within the industry. But is this strategy holistically the best-for-business, or does it place a ceiling on revenue opportunities and inhibit mining companies from truly maximising value? Businesses need to maintain a balance between active cost management and revenue generation often resulting in cost reduction strategies at site level. These strategies have merit, assessing areas of cost wastage across operations and creating space for opportunity. However, this potentially can create distractions from the goal of enabling growth and lead to the sacrifice of quality and delivery. Focusing too heavily on cost reductions without addressing revenue generation is an unprofitable lens to look through, and the relationships between cost, revenue, quality and profit margin can often be overlooked resulting in missed opportunity to maximise value. How these relationships are effectively employed by mining companies to reap the rewards from an overarching corporate perspective down to site level remains a fluid concept depending on the nature, operating market and strategy of the business. A common directive from businesses to their operations is to strive for greater profitability and productivity. The quantification of these requirements, and the nature of the cascading message delivered, impacts the methods employed by the operational team to meet the expectations of the business. Cascaded strategies, if not delivered with appropriate participation and buy-in can often be perceived to be knee-jerk and create frustration for operations who are squeezed to deliver on expectations by slashing site costs. This squeezing is not only felt by the mining operation but at the individual level and can result in increased team stresses. In some cases, this may also steer behaviours towards activities that result in corner cutting and an elevation of operational risk, potentially increasing associated incidents and injury. Driving down costs by any means can create an unhealthy tunnel vision where value is no-longer assessed for best-forbusiness results. By flipping the viewpoint to a value-based approach revenue opportunity may be realised and potentially exceeded, however this opportunity may be missed if value is over shadowed by a cost heavy focus. By analysing a selection of real operational cases (ranging from mining contractors through to in-house mining giants), it becomes apparent that practical revenue maximisation strategies are not only key to an increase in value and cash flow but to a stronger understanding of business drivers for sites and operators alike. In the cases evaluated additional revenue opportunities are foregone in favour of cost reduction strategies resulting in negative impacts on the associated operations and wider businesses. Alignment towards value generation is king. If strategies are not implemented focusing towards value and revenue maximisation, the opportunity loss experienced by mining operations could continue be great and the question should be posed; when the next up-turn hits will operations be ready to reap the rewards or still have a glass ceiling above their heads?

With blasting, all far-field phenomena including, but not limited to, stress wave propagation, fracture, vibration and muck pile formation are intrinsically and irrevocably dependent upon near-field phenomena or mechanisms that we describe using physics-based mathematics typically transcribed into computer codes. The energetics involved in such near- to far-field transitions are not fundamentally relevant as they are simply progenitors of these processes.The notion of explosive energy as a descriptor for explosive or blasting performance is a case in point. These energies, which are generally used in blasting tables, are almost exclusively based on ideal detonation theory alone and do not include the influence of the rock, charge diameter, blasthole length and the late-time dynamic expansion that can be predicted using codes based on non-ideal detonation theory.With decoupled charges in presplits for example, the pressure drop between the charge and the blasthole wall can be simply described to first order using the energy relationship associated with adiabatic expansion. The Bushveld Complex of South Africa contains almost 90% of the world’s reserves of platinum group minerals (PGMs). In the flotation of PGMs, there are significant challenges arising from the need to treat ever-decreasing grades of the relevant ore deposits. The major challenge in the flotation of these ore bodies is the control and management of the gangue minerals, particularly silicates such as orthopyroxene, plagioclase feldspar, and pyroxene which are often rimmed with talc which makes them naturally floatable. It has been shown that various polysaccharide depressants such as CMC and guar have different properties in terms of depressing the gangue minerals. Since the PGMs are often associated with sulphides, copper sulphate is widely used as an activator in PGM flotation but can inadvertently activate the gangue minerals as well as reduce the recovery of PtTe2 which accounts for up to 40% of the Pt in the Platreef ore body. Depressants also reduce the mass of solids reporting to the froth and can thus destabilise the froth. This effect on the froth can be mitigated by using higher frother dosages or water of higher ionic strength. Reducing chromite recovery is of critical importance since high levels may negatively affect the downstream smelting process. Chromite recoveries can however be reduced through the application of gravity separation or reducing entrainment through reduced water recovery. In summary, due care needs to be taken to carry out site test work to develop an optimum ratio of collector, frother, activator, and depressant to ensure that the highest grades and recoveries of the PGEs are obtained while reducing depressant dosage as much as possible.

INTRODUCTION The Bushveld Complex located in the north of South Africa contains the world’s largest deposit of Platinum Group Minerals (PGMs) (1). The so-called upper Critical Zone of the Complex hosts the largest concentration of platinum group elements (PGEs) in the world. The Zone hosts the Upper Group Chromitite No.2 (UG2) reef and Merensky Reef as well as the Platreef mineralization of the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. The Merensky pegmatoid Zone contains the base metal sulphide grains and associated PGMs. Of particular importance to the topic of this paper is the occurrence in these reefs of various gangue minerals. The Merensky Reef consists predominantly of orthopyroxene (~60%), plagioclase feldspar (~20%), pyroxene (~15%), phlogopite (5%) and occasional olivine. Secondary minerals such as talc, serpentine, chlorite and magnetite have widespread occurrence. Of these, talc is the only mineral to show significant natural floatability (2,3). Although present in small amounts talc is closely associated with pyroxene and imparts significant floatablity to the high concentrations of pyroxene present in these ores (4). The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of pyrrohtite (~40%), pentlandite (~30%) and chalcopyrite (~15%). The major platinum group minerals are cooperite (PtS), braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS], sperrylite (PtAs2) and PGE alloys. The UG2 consists predominantly of chromite (between 60 – 90% by volume) with lesser silicate minerals (5 – 30% pyroxene and 1 – 10% plagioclase). Other minerals present in minor concentrations, can include silicates, oxides and base metal sulphides. Total PGE varies by locality but on average range between 4 and 7 g/t. The PGMs present in the UG2 Reef are highly variable, but generally the UG2 is characterised by PGE sulphides such as laurite (RuS2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite [(Pt,Pd)NiS. The base metal sulphides consist predominantly of chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite. The Platreef is located in the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex. This reef consists of a complex assemblage of rock types, with pyroxenites, serpentinites and calc-silicates being the most abundant. Base metal mineralization and platinum group element (PGE) concentrations are found to be highly irregular, both in value as well as in distribution. Hydrothermal method was applied in the preparation of calcium sulfate whiskers in airtight re-actor using gypsum as primary materials. The optimum conditions of preparation are as follows: pH value 9.8~10.1, concentration 5%, material size 18.1µm, which were determined by the analysis of the diameter of CaSO4 whiskers through SEM. On these conditions a product of ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers with diameter of 0.19µm and aspect ratio of 98 is obtained. Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers with different concentrations, modified by titanate NDZ-401, were added into polypropylene as intensifier and composites of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers/ polypropylene were prepared by melting-extruding method. Mechanical performance of the composites was tested and surface morphology of the composites was observed by SEM. The results indicated that impact notched izod of the composites was enhanced by 49.5% compared with pure polypropylene when 10.0% Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers were added into polypropylene and toughening effect was very remarkable. Dispersion behaviour and interface phenomenon of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers in polypropylene matrix were investigated by SEM. The results indicated that Dispersion performance of Ultrafine CaSO4 whiskers modified by titanate NDZ-401 in polypropylene matrix is good, which improved mechanical performance of composites to some extent.

"In this work, the progress of the HDDR process is discussed mainly on the Nd-Fe-B magnet system. There are three technologies being used for the Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet production; the sintering technique, the rapid quenching annealing and the HDDR process. The HDDR process utilizes· the HDDR phenomenon, in which hydrogen absorbing intermetallic compounds go through as they are heated in hydrogen atmosphere, Hydrogenation - Decomposition Desorption - Recombination. In the HDDR process, these four steps in the HDDR phenomenon are processed by choosing suitable reaction conditions regarding to hydrogen gas pressure, temperature, rate ·of desorption and etc., and we can produce permanent magnet powders of good magnetic properties with microstructures consisting with sub-micron size crystalline grains. In the anisotropic magnet powders, the sub-micron size crystals are being mostly aligned in the crystallographic c-axis direction. Possible applications of the HDDR process to other systems are also discussed.Microstructures of the Nd-Fe-B Permanent MagnetsIt is well known that magnet properties of magnetic materials are very sensitive to their microstructures [l]. This is seen in almost all magnet materials from soft magnetic materials and hard magnetic materials to magnetic memory materials. In this regard, the production technology is very important for the control of microstructures of permanent magnets The Nd-Fe-B magnet is the most powerful permanent magnet as a practical permanent magnet, and its coercivity force is much dependant on the microstructure as is the case for other permanent magnets."

Many of the gold deposits in the Timmins• area show a close spatial association to ultramafic metavolcanics. Available analytical data suggest that ultramafic rocks contain significantly higher gold contents than other major rock types. In addition, recent analyses by Keays (1975) suggest that talc-carbonate alteration of ultramafic rocks releases significant quantities of gold. It is proposed that the ultramafic volcanics formed the principal source of gold for the deposits in Timmins, and that the gold was derived from the ultramafic flows when they were extensively carbonatized. Carbonatization of the ultramafic rocks and emplacement of the auriferous quartz-carbonate veins was probably coincident with the last major period of deformation in the gold camp. Delineation of hitherto unrecognized ultramafic volcanics could be an important guide to the discovery of further gold deposits.

The effect of high-temperature plastic deformation of the austenitic phase (y) on the subsequent phase transformation to ferrite (a) has been experimentally investigated, and modelled using a physically-based model. The effect is of importance for steel sheet, in view of me significance of the phase transformation with respect to the eventual properties of the material. In this paper the kinetics of the y ? a phase transformation has been studied after different degrees of prior deformation. The degree of deformation is varied by applying different deformation temperatures and strain rates, and by allowing a varying extent of recovery and recrystallisation. Consequently, both dynamic and static recovery and recrystallisation have been involved. The dilatometric observations on the phase transformation have been modelled using an interface-mobility model, in which the effect of the dislocation structure is introduced as an additional driving-force term. The effect of the stored energy on the nucleation process, which appears to be affected more strongly than the growth of ferrite, is examined in terms of the classical nucleation theory.

"In the flotation process the contact angle is an important indicator of the hydrophobicity of a mineral particle. There is considerable literature showing that the contact angle increases when the chain length of the alkyl group associated with the collector molecule used to render the valuable mineral particle hydrophobic increases. The extent to which an alkyl group interacts with surrounding water molecules is quantified thermodynamically by the excess Gibbs energy. In the present paper it is shown that there exists generally a strong linear relationship between the excess Gibbs energy of the alkyl group associated with the collector and the contact angle. The structure-activity of such alkyl groups is in turn related to the total surface area, molecular volume, the molar volume, molecular weight of the functional groups in the molecule and interaction energies. It is proposed that the demonstrated relationship is indicative of the role which the alkyl group component of the collector, which is attached to the mineral particle, plays in increasing the extent to which water molecules at the surface of the mineral are rejected from the surface thus increasing the contact angle. The relationship between excess Gibbs energy and surface tension is further explored with a view to relating the observations quantitatively to the parameters in the Young equation.INTRODUCTIONThe issue of wettability of materials is of great importance to many industrial applications. Wettability studies usually involve the measurement of contact angles which indicate the degree of wetting when a solid and liquid interact. As is well known the contact angle (O) is the angle between planes tangent to the surfaces of the solid and the liquid at the wetting perimeter which is the zone where the air, water and solid phase merge. When the air bubble attaches to the solid surface there is an increase in the air/solid interface area and a decrease in the solid/water interface area. For attachment to occur the cosine of the contact angle should be less than 1 and this will be promoted if the interfacial surface tension between the air and the solid (? SV) is low. The experimental design and sampling procedures for underground data collection are outlined. The sample analysis procedures for quartz determination, the ¬analysis results and conclusions of the study are discussed.The results of the study indicate that the quartz contents of the airborne dusts are generally higher than those in the host material and bulk samples; and the quartz content increases with decreasing size of the airborne dust. The source for quartz appears to be the roof and the floor materials rather than the coal seam itself. It also appears that the material containing quartz may be breaking into a different size distribution than coal.INTRODUCTION Without doubt, the potential for permanent and severe health damage exists due to respirable dust in the work environment. The attention directed at the reduction of respirable airborne dust to levels below those specified in the law and the achievements to date in meeting these standards are but a reflection of the recognition by many parties government, industry, and labor - of this potential and the need to reduce it.The ambient dust standard in underground U.S. coal mines (2 mg/s3) has a qualifier (Code of Federal Regulations, Title 30, Part 71.101) to determine an applicable dust standard when a respirable dust sample contains more than 5% quartz. This standard is frequently referred to as the ""reduced standard."" The reasoning behind the reduced standard is the relative toxicity of the quartz dust compared to that of pure coal dust. As the quartz levels in samples increase, the applicable standards become more stringent and maintaining the workings in compliance becomes increasingly difficult.The number of underground work locations operating under the reduced standards has shown a dramatic increase since 1980 (Figure 1). For comparison purposes, there were no mining entities operating on reduced standards prior to 1977. The emergence of this problem, which affects the health and safety standards on one hand and creates severe compliance problems on the other, has been rapid."
