Noranda's Grey Eagle Mine and Mill, located in the Siskiyou Mountains of Northern California, began shakedown operations in the late fall and early winter of 1982. This paper describes some of the unique features in mining, milling and water treatment operation at Grey Eagle. In addition, major start-up problems in the mill and water treatment plant are discussed along with measures taken to correct these problems.

In a recent paper [1], the present authors discussed calculated energy consumption numbers in copper sulphide concentrate smelting for four different smelting technologies. For the present study, from among these technologies, they selected the Noranda/Teniente continuous bath smelting followed by Peirce Smith (PS) converting route to investigate the impact on total energy requirement of some key process variations, such as tuyere injection of dry concentrate vs. slingering of wet concentrate over the molten bath, continuous converting vs. conventional batch PS converting and commercially proven slag cleaning alternatives. In their calculations, the authors used the same thermochemical model and methodology used in their earlier paper. This approach to explore plant design options provides an interesting basis for evaluating flowsheet modifications that could lead to significant copper smelting energy savings. The METSIM software was used in the present paper to carry out heat and mass balance computations for 8 different flowsheet configurations. The results are presented and discussed in the paper with respect to copper recoveries, energy requirements and CO2 emissions.

"Over the last ten years, several developments have been undertaken to conceive a machine capable of carrying out simultaneously all the mining tasks in hard rock deposits: cutting, mucking, hauling, ground support and dust control.The main advantages of continuous mining over conventional drill and blast is the elimination of the cyclical nature of the actual methods. Other advantages sought are improved stability of mine openings, higher productivity, lower costs, and a cleaner and safer mining environment. Noranda has con-tributed to these developments in a major way. As a member of HDRK, Noranda participated in the development of two mechanical continuous mining machines; the TM60 and the Wirth. Noranda also undertook a development of its own based on the utilization of electricity to break rock. This technology is called plasma blasting (PBT). The concept of plasma blasting is illustrated in Figure 1.When the operating voltage is reached (18kV), the energy is released through a high current switch (500k A) into a coaxial powercable. It is then delivered to the tip of an electrode inserted into a drill hole which is filled with an electrolyte (water). When the energy reaches the electrolyte, it is instantaneously transformed into a high temperature, high pres-sure plasma that produces a shock wave capable of breaking rock(1).After initial testing of the plasma blasting technology in the lab and in the feld, two experimental platforms were constructed. The first one, a test bench, was erected at the Noranda Technology Centre in Pointe Claire, Quebec.(2)The second one is a rock breaker prototype based on a standard diesel-powered carrier (Fig. 2). Each platform was equipped with a 300 kJ pulsed-power module.In 1993, the rock breaker prototype was used for an extensive series of tests in the field. During that campaign, over 700 oversized boulders were blasted. The results of the tests demonstrated that more durable components for PBT were needed. The test bench was then used to successfully develop and test long-lasting components (probe, switch, cable, connector) that can be adapted to industrial platforms leading to the commercialization of the technology."

Although technology and circumstances are in a constant state of change, the principles of managing the human element remain constant. The isolated mining community continues to form the backbone of the minerals industry but the nature of the isolation, along with the economic and political environment of the industry, is changing. These changes require new inputs by management to the workforce. Management must determine an effective working relationship with unions on its mine site and concurrently contribute to the build- up of the expertise of the individual worker through training and communication. It must also retain a proper balance, by way of human contribution, in cost and information reporting and in other areas amenable to computerisation. These comprise the aids to management necessary to achieve the desired operating efficiency and profitability.

Geotechnical exploration in North America, in particular, exploration for deep foundations analyses, is currently and generally performed following the most basic sampling and insitu testing methods and techniques. Some would surely say that the state-of-practice severely lags the state-of-the-art. Probably more than 90% of all deep foundations, both driven piles and drilled piers, installed in North America are initially analyzed and designed, i. e. geotechnically, on the basis of either the soil penetration resistance obtained by performing the "Standard Penetration Test" (SPT), or from laboratory shear tests performed on samples obtained using 76-mm (3-in.) nominal diameter, thin wall, "Shelby tube" samplers. The use of design data obtained with other exploration methods and devices, such as bore hole pressure meters, flat plate dilatometers, even cone penetrometers, occur on the fringes of practice and often in conjunction with the use of the two simpler methods of analysis. This basic approach probably represents an attempt of the profession to use, as much as possible, common, easily understood and easily communicated procedures in all geologic environments. The characteristics of drill rigs with the required drilling and samplng tools vary somewhat from region to region in North America according to the physiography of the area of use, the types of exploration data required on a day-to-day basis, the philosophy of the engineers and geologists that use the exploration data and the financial resources of the drill rig owner. The physical capability of the exploration drill rig used on a project can have a significant effect on the quality of samples or insitu tests. The physical configuration and the quality of the drill and the drilling, sampling and testing tools not only provide the mechanical capability to obtain data but affect the attitude of the field exploration crew and the quality of work. This complete presentation is taken, for the most part, from a book in preparation for publication: "Geotechnical Exploration and Site Characterization" by C. Riggs, A. Hatheway and N. Schmidt. The Hiddenite District of Alexander County, NC has produced some of the world?s finest large emeralds since the first one was discovered 134 years ago. In fact, North America?s largest emeralds come from the district, making this one of the continent?s most unique gem deposits. In addition to emeralds, the Hiddenite District is also famous as the discovery site for the rare spodumene mineral hiddenite, first identified in 1881. Nowhere else in the world do these two minerals naturally occur together. The emeralds are a unique color variety of beryl (Al2Be3Si6O18) with trace amounts of Cr+3 and V+3 substituting for Al+3. The hiddenite (LiAlSi2O6) crystals also exhibit emerald green color due to traces of chromium. Consisting of three large deposits and numerous prospects, the district encompasses an area of 10 km2 (4 sq miles) centered on the small town of Hiddenite. Operations at the Adams, Ellis and North American Emerald Mines properties have been productive at irregular intervals since the 1880s. Currently, only the North American Emerald Mines property is being mined on a regular basis. Recent activity there has exposed a 3-hm2 (7.4-acre) pit with depths of 25 m (82 ft) that provides the best exposures of unweathered bedrock seen in the district in more than 120 years. Although no official records exist, public and private data indicate that the production of the entire Hiddenite District from 1880 to 2007 is about 70,000 carats of emerald and 20,000 carats of hiddenite. The bulk of the emeralds came from the North American Emerald Mine property (NAEM, formerly known as the Rist Mine) where sustained mining replaced the previous sporadic prospecting in 2000.

Through close cooperation with geophysical and geological test work by Texas Gulf Sulphur Co. in Beaufort County, the Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory assisted in the evaluation of North Carolina's most valuable mineral resource, the Pungo River phosphate deposit. After a core evaluation study, the flotation process for the concentration of North Carolina phosphate was demonstrated in a 500-lb per hr pilot plant in Asheville. Tonnage samples of phosphate concentrate were produced for customer evaluation in the United States, Europe, and the Far East. Plans for a larger pilot plant to be erected at the plant site at Lee Creek were prepared for TGS. The larger pilot plant was operated by TGS in conjunction with a test dredging operation which led to the adoption of a dragline dry mining method to move 90,000 tpd of material for the production of 10,000 tpd of phosphate concentrate in the all-flotation phosphate concentrator. Calcining, dry grinding, and byproduct studies complimented the construction of one of the world's largest and most modern fertilizer raw-feed complexes on the eastern North Carolina seaboard.

We have seen that the first coal development in Pennsylvania was in the Pittsburgh bed in the southwestern corner of the state. The next mining, in point of time, was done in Clearfield County along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, but the amount of mining done was quite small for a number of years and was soon exceeded by that from the area north of the Susquehanna River in Tioga, Bradford and Lycoming Counties, which will be considered now. It is claimed that coal was first noticed in Tioga County, in 1792, by Robert and Benjamin Patterson who were leading a party of settlers from Williamsport to southern New York, and while clearing a road near the site of Blossburg, found coal, which was said to be good. About 1815 David Clemons made an arrangement with Aaron Bloss, owner of the land, to work some of the coal and hauled the first load down the river to Painted Post, N. Y., as there were no available markets in his own state. Smiths found it an excellent fuel and apparently he found a ready market for the small amount he could transport by wagons and sleighs. As wood began to become scarce around the towns in New York State, the knowledge of the coal deposits in the mountains at the head of the Tioga River attracted attention to the field and the necessity, for means of transportation from it. Some coal had been floated down the river, but navigation was uncertain and dangerous. In 1827 an iron plant was built, and to ship its product and coal, it was proposed to build a canal along the river to reach Corning, N. Y. A company had been chartered in 1826 in Pennsylvania to "make a navigable canal or slack-water navigation" to the state line and coal was shipped on rafts of logs, both being sold, during highwater. In 1828 the company was authorized to build a railroad instead of a canal, and in September 1840, the railroad was completed from Corning to Blossburg.1 That some coal from Pennsylvania had been reaching southern New York towns prior to the improved means of transport is shown by the report of a committee to the New York Assembly: "the bituminous coal has been brought to us either from Great Britain or from that part of our own country which borders on, and lies west and south of the Susquehan-

The North Shore Connector Project for the Port Authority of Allegheny County involves TBM tunnelling twin light rail tunnels through cohesive soils and rock under the Allegheny River and a narrow city street. Along the tunnel alignment are a listed historic building on shallow foundations as well as modern buildings on deep foundations; one major office block was actually constructed directly over the alignment during the latter phases of design process. This paper provides an overview of the general site conditions, tunnel design and the technical basis for excavation support and tunnelling decisions. Deformation limits, ground improvement, monitoring and mitigation plans are also discussed. Project construction has now commenced and a brief summary of progress to date is included in this paper; this will be updated for the presentation to be made in Melbourne.

The Northeast Boundary Tunnel Project consists of a 23 ft diameter, 27,000 ft long, CSO tunnel, multiple underground connections, and significant surface works within an urban corridor. The NEBT alignment depths range from 60 to 140 ft and includes seven shafts ranging in depth from 77 to 155 ft with diameters varying from about 19.5 to 56 ft, some as in-line connections and others required adits for connection to the main tunnel. This paper focuses on the design and construction of two major underground connections which are the First Street Connector Tunnel and the Mount Olivet Road Diversion Sewer.

The Mount Olivet Road Drop Shaft (MOR-DS) support of excavation (SOE) is a circular unreinforced concrete shaft with an inside diameter of a 30.5 ft (9.3 m) and depth of 120.5 ft (36.7 m), constructed using slurry wall methods. The SOE for the adjacent Mount Olivet Road Approach Channel (MOR-AC) and Mount Olivet Road Ventilation Vault (MOR-VV) near surface structures (NSS) consists of lean mix concrete walls and cement-bentonite walls, respectively, both constructed using slurry wall techniques and reinforced with embedded soldier piles. NSS SOE required multiple levels of preloaded internal bracing, with excavation depths of up to 75 ft (22.9 m). The original design construction sequence for the shaft and NSS SOE required that the MOR-DS be constructed in its entirety and backfilled to ground surface prior to excavation of the adjacent NSS SOE. After installation of the drop shaft and NSS SOE an accelerated construction sequence was implemented requiring the analysis of the excavation support systems to determine if the excavations could be open concurrently without adversely impacting the partially constructed permanent MOR-DS structure. The MOR-DS was analyzed using the finite element analysis (FEA) software, MIDAS GTS, to demonstrate that the unbalanced loads applied to the MOR-DS composite structure due to the revised sequence would not exceed the strength and serviceability requirements per ACI-350 or superseded by the more stringent project requirements. The results of the FEA were used to set limits for geotechnical instrumentation consisting of strain gauges located on the brace levels of the NSS SOE. A comparison of the SOE design hand calculations, FEA model results and instrumentation data is presented.

A brief account of economic developments in and around northeastern Alberta is presented and mention is made of mining and industrial developments currently of interest in the area. Planned and projected operations are briefly discussed for this region. The history of geological surveys and mining activities in the Shield area of Alberta and the adjoining parts of Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan is traced. Reassessment of the presently-known economic picture of northwestern Canada in conjunction with some recent information on Precambrian structures of northeastern Alberta points to some interesting mining possibilities, particularly in and around that province.

Northern Australia leads in world-class mineral deposits' is a bold statement. First there must be a starting point. Land north of the Tropic of Capricorn (23¦ 26' 5") will be regarded as Northern Australia covering nearly 40 per cent of the land surface of Australia. As opposed to land south of the Tropic of Capricorn, it should be regarded as Tropical Northern Australia and for the sake of brevity, (TNA) Refer Figure 1. Apart from the tyranny of distance from centres of power and population in the temperate zone, it suffered in the past from the belief that the tropics are unsuited for European workers and from the lack of infrastructure. Outstanding mineral deposits of iron, base metals, gold and diamonds, discovered and developed in the past three decades, provided the substance for the title. There are many world-class mines producing and there are mineral deposits neutralised through Government policy. TNA can maintain its lead in world-class mineral deposits provided Government policy will stop partitioning the land and decreasing that available for exploration. Let's look at what we have that is world-class. In Western TNA iron ore deposits at Paraburdoo, Mt Tom Price, Marandoo, gold at Telfer, diamonds at Argyle. In central TNA uranium at Ranger and Jabiluka, lead-zinc-silver at McArthur River, gold at the Tanami, manganese at Groote Eylandt and bauxite at Gove. In eastern TNA Mt Isa, Hilton, Century zinc-lead, bauxite at Weipa, gold at Kidston, Mt Leyshon, magnesite at Yamba and coal mines in the Bowen Basin. Those mines or deposits stand out yet are only an indication of the numerous lesser mines and of mineral deposits depending for development on market demand and/or changes in Government policy, eg 'The Three Mines' policy. Very large areas of mineral rich structures in the western, central and eastern parts of TNA are concealed below flat lying comparatively young unmineralised sediments. The Great Artisan basin sediments in eastern TNA can and do host oil shale and non metallic minerals. Nearly 40 per cent of western TNA is covered by the Great Sandy Desert. The Canning Track, with a series of 54 wells, was constructed by surveyor Alfred Canning in 1908 - 1910 with great difficulty. It extends 1700 kilometres from Halls Creek in the north to the gold town of Wiluna in the south, through the Great and Little Sandy Deserts. Gold explorers are following favourable structures extending to the north east below the sediments and sand hills covering the track. Half of central TNA's mineral structures are concealed by the Tanami desert and the Cretaceous sediments covering the pastoral regions of the Barkly Tableland and the Daly Waters to Top Springs pastoral areas. The Georgina Basin in the south eastern section is part of the concealment.

Northern ecosystems are dominated by a harsh physical environment which dictates a need for biological adaptation. As yet, it is unknown just how these adapted plants and animals will tolerate industrial development. Our work, sponsored by university, government and industry, is part of an effort to evaluate this developmental impact. Our present studies and the results to date will be discussed. Other problems to which the environmental student may address himself in the future to ensure against environ-mental degradation will be suggested.

Northparkes Mines commenced production in 1994 and the mine has significant reserves to allow operation into the future. There are a number of potential future concentrator feed sources with variable sulfide mineralogy and grades.In February 2012 a comprehensive flotation survey was conducted to allow mass balancing and evaluate the operation of the flotation circuit. A rudimentary, copper element only, unsized flotation simulator was developed to evaluate high level potential for optimisation and improvement. In 2013 this flotation model was expanded to produce a mineral based, floatability component model to estimate the effect of future concentrator feed source on metallurgical performance. This revised model allows various circuit configurations to be simulated to provide a high level blueprint for the long-term planning to maximise performance.This paper provides a review of the process followed to develop the model, including an analysis into the mineral floatability component model and its calibration against plant operations. In January 1998 Sydney Water Corporation formed an Alliance with construction contractor Transfield, and engineering consultants Connell Wagner and Montgomery Watson, to design and construct the Northside Storage Tunnel. The project is part of WaterPlan 21, Sydney WaterÆs strategy for cleaning up the harbours, bays, rivers and beaches within its business area. WaterPlan 21 is an integral part of the NSW GovernmentÆs $3.1 billion Waterways Package which establishes targets and initiatives for sustainable wastewater management within NSW. The project is being delivered under an Alliance Agreement, which has a number of non-traditional features in terms of partnering, management principles and design and construct. Construction began in mid-1998 and is on target to meet the completion deadline for the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Mines are facing fresh challenges over how they deal with the huge quantities of water consumed. industry analyst Frost and Sullivan, demand for treatment equipment and services alone is expected to be worth US$3.6bn by 2016, while a report by consultancy Bluefield Research estimates that the total mine water market - which includes water infrastructure such as reservoirs, pipelines and dewatering systems as well as the equipment and services - will be worth US$17bn by the end of 2019. Methods of water decontamination are described.

Over the past several years, the combination of higher energy and steel costs and the recent commercial deployment of high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology in hard rock mining have led many multinational mining companies to evaluate the suitability of HPGR technology for their particular comminution circuits. HPGR technology is perceived to require a higher capital investment while delivering lower long-term operating costs. This paper undertakes a critical evaluation of this perception. By evaluating the capital and life-of-mine operating costs of competing circuit designs for soft, medium and hard ores, the HPGR break-even point can be identified, at which the incremental capital cost of an HPGR circuit is equivalent to the net present value of the projected operating cost reductions. For ores with hardness parameters above the break-even point, HPGR circuits could offer economic benefits, while for softer ores, SAG mill/ball mill/pebble crushing (SABC) circuits are likely to be more economical and energy efficient. This evaluation considers both an SABC reference circuit and a traditional stage crushing configuration. Other influential factors are also discussed.
