"The proposed Minne Lusa Stormwater Conveyance Sewer is part of the Phase 3 Major Combined Sewer Overflow projects to be scheduled as part of the City of Omaha’s Long Term Control Plan (LTCP). The system features a 6,100 foot long, 14-foot inside diameter tunnel to provide for conveyance of separated stormwater from previously completed and future LTCP sewer separation projects to the expanded Storz West and Pershing Detention Basins and subsequently, the Missouri River. The tunnel will operate as a pressurized system and convey flows of up to 2,500 ft3/s resulting from a 10-year, 24 hour storm event. This paper provides a synopsis of the project with a focus on the overall design aspects related to siting the tunnel alignment in an urban environment, the hydraulic analyses performed to choose a pressurized system rather than an open channel system, and expected geologic conditions. Tunnel alignment and profile and geological profile are presented, as well as an overview of the construction related impacts considered during design. PROJECT BACKGROUND The proposed Minne Lusa Stormwater (MLSW) Conveyance System will provide for conveyance of separated stormwater from previously completed, and future, LTCP sewer separation projects to the expanded Storz West and Pershing Detention Basins and subsequently, the Missouri River. The project location is representatively shown on Figure 1; the overall conveyance system is represented in Figure 2. The MLSW Conveyance System consists of three separate construction contracts under Contract Numbers: OPW-52004 – The Storz West Detention Basin to 31st & Paxton Tunnel; OPW-52454 – The Storz West/Pershing Detention Basin Grading and Improvements; and, OPW-52752 – The Pershing Detention Basin to ML Outfall Channel. This paper focuses on the project covered under Contract OPW-52004: design and construction of an approximately 6,110 feet 14-foot inside diameter (ID) tunnel, constructed using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). The tunnel will receive flows from the Paxton Boulevard (PB) and the John Creighton Boulevard (JCB) Stormwater Conveyance Sewers and convey the flows to the Storz West Detention Basin, resulting in CSO volume and flow rate reductions to the Minne Lusa Outfall Channel and the North Interceptor."

Two key strategies for a new generation of mining are developing domestic raw material production and doing so in an environmentally responsible way, according to presenters at the 83rd annual meeting of the SME Minnesota Section in Duluth (the 71st annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium). From technical sessions detailing how to build com-munity support, to a short course on international perspectives in iron ore mining and processing, the two-day meeting emphasized the potential of Minnesota state deposits and the importance of maintaining productive community relations both locally and globally. The meeting of more than 300 mining industry professionals began on April 20 with a traditional convocation celebrating the values of northern Minnesota. The accompanying tradeshow, with a record 131 booths, showed the speed and vigor of the economic rebound. Keynote speaker Scott Anderson, vice president and senior economist at Wells Fargo, stated the prevailing mood of the conference: ?Wow, what a difference a year makes.? With metal prices and sales up and heading higher, he said, it was clear that the production-centered economic recovery is reaching the mining and the minerals industry. However, Anderson sounded a few notes of caution. Serious threats to economic stability remain, including the burgeoning national de?cit, high unemployment and the still out-of-control foreclosure crisis. Overall, he predicted a below-average recovery and stressed the importance of developing a long-term business strategy.

Minnesota is a major mining state. This statement is not a dream or stretch goal but is a fact. As reported in a recent edition of Mining Engineering magazine, Minnesota ranks as the third largest state in terms revenues generated from nonfuels mineral production. The vibrancy of the mining sector in Minnesota can be attributed to several factors. The northeastern corner of the state is home to Minnesota?s iron range, one of North America?s largest deposits of iron ore. Iron ore from Minnesota is a strategic resource that has been [ ] instrumental to the nation?s development ? 90 percent of the iron used to build ships and planes during World War II came from Minnesota. Taconite pellets now produced from openpit mines on the iron range are shipped to steel mills worldwide. The growing appetite for steel in China and India has reignited once moribund mining operations throughout the iron range.

Minor elements determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy include: zinc, cadmium, copper, cobalt, nickel, chromium, manganese, and iron. Of these elements, only three; zinc, cadmium, and copper are found to have been introduced with the ore-forming fluids. Iron, manganese, chromium, and nickel were increased in dolo-stone lithologies when compared to limestone lithologies. The uniform distribution of cobalt suggests this element was neither increased nor decreased during ore emplacement nor during dolomitization of the rocks. Zinc increases adjacent to ore result from leakages into open spaces rather than as pervasive aureoles surrounding ore bodies.

Small amounts of arsenic trioxide were shipped in 1988 from remaining stocks at ASARCO Incorporated's closed plant at Tacoma, WA. Imports of arsenic trioxide were at about the same level in 1988 as in the previous year. Legislation and Government Programs The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) levied a $1.6 million fine against Asarco for exposing its workers at its East Helena lead smelter in Helena, MT, to unacceptably high levels of lead and arsenic. The bulk of the fine was for violations of a respiratory protection program. The same smelter and its environs has been listed as a Superfund toxic-waste site by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Tests had shown high levels of lead, cadmium, and arsenic in the soil near the smelter. EPA planned to extend the cleanup to areas within the town of East Helena because high levels of arsenic had been found in shallow test wells outside the smelter site. Federal and State health officials have warned residents living in the vicinity of East Helena to avoid eating certain home-grown vegetables because of high concentrations of heavy metals.2

"The flexibility of the PlantStar control platform has enabled Mintek to investigate and easily develop new control strategies for both milling and flotation. This includes a Solids Feed Controller, a Safety Limit Controller, Mill Power Optimiser and Flotation Optimiser, amongst others.The solids feed controller was developed for minerals processing plants using a specialised time delay compensator. Using conventional time delay compensators that are purely model based, results in robustness problems due to model uncertainties. The Mintek Solid Feeds Controller makes use of a plant model, but compensates for model inaccuracies, giving more controller stability and a more robust delay compensation algorithm.The safety limit controller has been developed to switch smoothly between normal and safety control loops without bumping the process. The safety loop output is chosen in accordance with a predefined list of priorities and whether the respective constraint boundaries are exceeded.The Mill Power Optimiser helps to find the power peak on the mill power curve. This insures maximum grind with maximum throughput. It also prevents power dips due to mill overloads, making the milling circuit easier to operate.The flotation optimiser algorithm analyses trends of all accessible variables in the process. The algorithm uses this information to calculate operating conditions that will control the residence times, mass pulls and circulating loads within a flotation circuit to a specified setpoint. Research is being done to now optimise these setpoints in order to achieve better recovery."

Many large rock avalanches and/or landslides have occurred in mountainous regions around the world. Their occurrences are normally rapid and unexpected, which can cause disasters. They have been investigated extensively by many researchers and engineers since the 1903 Frank Slide on Turtle Mountain, Alberta, Canada. They are one of the most peculiar phenomena because the rock debris of more than one million m3 can move over the horizontal distances exceeding those expected from conventional friction physics. This paper presents a gas cause hypothesis responsible for the large rock avalanches. It is the migration and expansion of a certain amount of highly pressurized and dense natural gas mass from deep geological grounds into the mountainous rock mass slopes. The natural gas with high pressure and density can escape from the deep geological ground and flow through faults, weak zones and/or porous channels into the rock mass forming a mountainous slope. The rock mass forming the slope has the high tensile and compressive strength and can resist the initial loading of the gas mass migrated into and stored in their voids, pores, holes, gaps, openings, apertures and cavities. With time, more and more gas mass from deep ground can migrate into and stored in the slope rock mass. Eventually, the peak equilibrium of forces and deformation reaches. The expanding power of the gas in the slope rock mass would instantly and rapidly break, erupt and/or explode them. The compressed and dense gas mass would mix, flow and expand together with the broken rock debris mass and continue offering their remaining expanding powers to the moving and sliding debris mass. As a result, the rock debris of large volume can reach the runout distances exceeding those expected from the conventional friction physics. The gas would escape into the sky and the solid rock debris would remain on the ground spreading over large ground area. The 1903 Frank Slide is examined to show this gas cause and mechanism in mountainous regions.

The need to apply the latest available technology to develop better tools and methods to meet problems in the mining industry was recognized by six of Canada's leading mining companies. As a result, MIROC (Mining Industry Research Organization of Canada) was chartered to identify problem areas in Canadian mining and to have research carried out to develop the tools and equipment to meet these perceived needs. The initial activity of MIROC has been in the environmental field, with improved clothing and protective devices being developed by contractors. Work clothing for miners is now being field tested. Respiratory protection and a new personal light source combined in a new "space-age" helmet are about to be issued for testing. Further developmental work is being carried on to offer these units and probably other personal protective devices on an individual basis as well as in a combined package.

The Columbia Chemical Division of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. is at Bar-berton, Ohio, 35 miles south of Cleveland. For many years large tonnages of limestone have been brought to the Barberton plant from distant points. The stone is here burnt in vertical kilns, the resultant product then hydrated and the hydrated lime used in chemical processing. To eliminate the expense of these shipments, the company decided to investigate a limestone bed known to exist on company property at Barberton, where the stone is used. The bed lay at a depth of more than 2000 ft. and was known locally as the "Deep Lime." Chemical analyses of sludge from churn-drill holes made some years ago proved that the limestone was of sufficient purity to warrant diamond-drill exploration. Four diamond-drill holes were put down at well-spaced intervals, to represent fairly an area of four miles by one mile. Cores logged as to chemical and physical conditions were found to compare closely, and to corroborate the earlier evidence that the limestone was of superior quality for chemical use. A plant of 300 tons per hour was subsequently decided upon. SITe The yard at the chemical plant was already so congested that location of the projected mine within its area could not be considered. Eventually a site was selected 2 miles northwest of the plant, near the main line of the Erie Railroad. Here 412 acres were owned outright by the company and stone rights were obtained on 2 50 additional acres. This location required a transportation line of nearly 2 miles (8800 ft.), crossing two major highways, and to avoid interruption of deliveries to the plant, overpasses were planned. Geology The limestone in the immediate vicinity lies about 2200 ft. below the surface. Geologists* identify this stone as Delaware of Devonian age. It is overlain by 18 ft. of unconsolidated (sand and gravel), 100 ft. of water-bearing sandstone, and finally 2080 ft. of shale into which sandstone in thin layers is interbedded. The contact of shale and limestone is abrupt, flat-lying and very pronounced. Berea sandstone, often found at 520 ft., is absent, but Euclid sandstone was encountered, together with a seepage of oil and a small amount of methane gas. The limestone bed itself is 345 ft. thick, and overlies 200 ft. of gypsum. The lower part becomes dolomitic as it approaches the gypsum. A detailed study of the drill cores indicates that the upper 50 ft. are highest in lime and reasonably low in silica. The physical make-up shows several separating cherty layers. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Misima gold mine, located on Misima Island within the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea, was operated by Misima Mines Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Placer Dome Asia Pacific Limited (Placer), between 1988 and 2004. During this period, the mine produced 3.7 Moz of gold and 22.2 Moz of silver. In June 2012, the Special Mining Lease for the property was surrendered and incorporated into an Exploration Licence (EL). WCB Resources Ltd (WCB) entered into an exploration farm-in agreement with Pan Pacific Copper covering this EL.In June 2013, WCB published a new mineral resource of the Umuna deposit at Misima. All the drill hole data used for estimation was historical data collected by the previous owners of the Misima mine between 1977 and 2001. No new drilling was carried out by WCB. Confidence that the data could be relied on was provided by detailed interrogation of the existing data, reconciliation of the new resource model against production data and significant input from individuals who had previously been involved with the data collection, resource estimation and production activities of the Misima mine during its operation.This extended abstract will consider the challenges associated with locating, retrieving and validating historical data to use as inputs to produce an updated Mineral Resource estimate and comment on the material value of appropriate data storage, documentation and record keeping through the life of a project. It will also comment on the value of WCB obtaining access to the intellectual knowledge of many professionals that were former employees of Placer. The Mission Valley Viaduct is located in San Diego, California. This structure is the intersection of Interstate 8 and 805. The project consists of the main viaduct, 8 connecting ramps, and one highway overpass. This job was originally built back in the 70's. After the Loma Prieta Earthquake in 1989, Caltrans began an aggressive program to seismic retrofit all of its bridges throughout the state. Most retrofit designs required major upgrades to the existing footings. These footing upgrades consisted of either driven or drilled shaft piling. The existing footings of the Mission Valley interchange were supported on driven H pile. The soils throughout the site were dense sands and gravels, cobbles, occasional boulders with a dense sandstone bearing strata, which varied through out the site. It was this sandstone strata that the engineers designed their pile tips around. High ground water in sandy soils created a high probability of liquefaction in all of the upper stratas.

The Cornwallis Fold Belt in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago contains numerous Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) Zn- Pb occurrences and the world-class Polaris deposit. The occurrences are mainly hosted by the dolostone in the Thumb Mountain Formation which spreads over 25000 km2. Success in exploration requires further understanding of the genesis of these occurrences and an assessment of their parentage with the giant Polaris deposit. Syn-sulfide dolomites in regional occurrences share C-O-Sr isotopic characteristics similar with Polaris dolomites, indicating warm basinal brines enriched in 87Sr. The dolomites and sphalerites contain fluid inclusions with ice-melting temperature between ?45° and ?25°C, which is significantly lower than for most MVT districts in the world (?30° and ?10°C). These characteristics indicate that all the Cornwallis occurrences were produced by fluids of the same sources and/or aquifers. The deposit size was largely controlled by the rate and duration of the metal-carrying fluid flow, and by the availability of reduced sulfur at the site of mineralization.

The Missouri River Intake Screen Structure and Tunnel (MRISST) is one phase of the Red River Valley Water Supply Project (RRVWSP), a vital piece of infrastructure in the state of North Dakota to transport water to drought-laden communities in the eastern half of the state. The scope of work consists of constructing a cofferdam in the Missouri River, mining a 1,600-foot by 74-inch tunnel from a secant pile shaft near the riverbank into a cofferdam, and erecting a 40-foot Y-shaped vertical pipe structure in the cofferdam to support the intake screens. Construction personnel worked in the river through the North Dakota winter to construct the cofferdam and contended with high hydrostatic pressures and raveling sands, gravels, cobbles and boulders while mining the tunnel. Diligent planning and meticulous execution were essential to overcoming the challenges encountered below the Missouri River.

"The Experimental Mine at the Missouri University of Science and Technology is undergoing major developments. The underground workings are being expanded to include a ramp down to a second level which will comprise of larger opening and room sizes to better simulate modern mine layouts. Thisexpansion will enable the Experimental Mine to be utilized for many more generations. In addition, the new 15,000 sq. ft. Kennedy Mine Building is being constructed and will house the mine office,classrooms, and three laboratories to accommodate the mining and explosives engineering programs’ ever-increasing enrollment. With these new developments come an increasing need for safety and awareness in regards to explosives and blasting. This paper will utilize the Institute of ExplosivesMakers Safety Analysis of Risk (IMESAFR) software tool, to assess current magazine compliance withthe increased personnel limits and mine building location. Furthermore, this paper will assess theimplementation of a wireless blast warning system consisting of warning beacons and a centrally located siren which will be integrated with the construction of the Kennedy Mine Building. This warning system will provide the necessary precautions to safely conduct blasting-related experiential learningopportunities and research projects, and will enable facility staff to more efficiently oversee blastingoperations at the Experimental Mine. "

An investigation was undertaken to devise a new method for reducing dust spread during blasting demolition utilising water tube and detonating cord. Modelling of smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) with AUTODYN software was initially completed to determine the expected diffusing behaviour of the water tube. The actual behaviour was then captured with high speed videos during each experiment, and each result analysed in detail. Water mist diffusion was generated and analysed by changing three key variables. In sequence, these included changing the location of detonating cord in the tube, the charge quantity and the tube diameter.As a result of experiments and simulation, optimum design for ideal diffusion behaviour was suggested and each behaviour of water mist was classified by diffusing shape of water tube as the design criteria.CITATION:Ko, Y-H, Kim, J-K, Kim, S-J, Park, H, Kim, H-S, Cho, S-H and Yang, H-S, 2015. Mitchell Point Tunnel near Hood River, Oregon is one of the more unique segments of the Historic Columbia River Highway and State Trail being constructed through the Columbia River Gorge. This 650-foot bike/pedestrian tunnel set to open in 2024 is being delivered by FHWA in partnership with Oregon DOT, Oregon State Parks, and the U.S. Forest Service. Primarily driven using drill & blast excavation methods through basalt, the shotcrete and dowel-supported tunnel features masonry portals and ve window adits that provide illumination and views of the river similar to the original highway tunnel of many vistas built in 1915 that was removed in 1966 to make way for Interstate 84. This paper summarizes the planning, design, and construction.

During December 2007, Lake Cowal Gold Mine located in New South Wales, Australia experienced a significant pit wall failure. The wall failure resulted in the deposition of a large quantity of saprolite consisting largely of clays and lake bed sediments to the bottom of the Phase 1 open pit mine. This wall failure ultimately buried two loaded blast patterns.

With the depletion of high-quality ores, the efficiency of extracting difficult gold ores through flotation and leaching becomes very important in the mining industry. Iron contaminants, sulfide and carbonaceous coatings on the surface of gold and gold bearing minerals significantly hinder the recovery of gold during gold processing. As the surface of gold minerals is easily contaminated, coatings of iron oxides and iron hydroxides originated from the grinding process and oxidation of iron sulfides will cause a retarding effect on both gold flotation and leaching.To mitigate the processing issues caused by undesirable surface coatings on gold minerals, a new technology in treating surface coatings of iron contaminants has been developed. The pulp potential and pH of the slurry are altered to allow dissolution of surface coatings which are further excluded by the use of complexing reagents. The current work shows that iron contaminants can be removed from the surfaces of gold through Eh-pH adjustment and chelation which result in significantly improved gold flotation response. The addition of complexants aids the formation of iron chelates to prevent the iron species in the solution from forming iron oxide and iron hydroxide in the flotation conditions.CITATION:Wei, R and Peng, Y, 2014.
