Zirconium chlorinator residues contain an array of rare earths, scandium, unreacted coke, and radioactive thorium and radium. Because of the radioactivity, the residues must be disposed in special waste containment facilities. As these sites become more congested, and with stricter environmental regulations, disposal of large volumes of wastes may become more difficult. To reduce the mass of disposed material, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) developed technology to recover rare earths, thorium and radium, and unreacted coke from these residues. This technology employs an HCl leach to solubilize over 99% of the scandium and thorium, and over 90% of the rare earths. The leach liquor is processed through several solvent extraction stages to selectively recover scandium, thorium, and rare earths. The leach residue is further leached with an organic acid to solubilize radium, thus allowing unreacted coke to be recycled to the chlorinator. The thorium and radium waste products, which comprise only 2.1% of the original residue mass, can then be sent to the radioactive waste facility.

"When utilizing high recovery underground mining methods, such as longwall or high-extraction room-and-pillar mining, the movement and deformation of the overburden propagate toward the surface and may affect the integrity of overlying surface streams (Peng et al, 1996). Published studies cite three major mechanisms of subsidence as most likely to impact streams: displacement, slope and strain. While subsidence-induced vertical displacement cause little structural damage to the stream bed, it may create adverse drainage and stream flow issues as the subsidence trough allows for ponding (Dawkins, 2003). Subsidenceinduced changes to the slope, or tilt, of a stream may have adverse effects on water flow. As the stream enters the subsidence trough, the gradient increases providing potential erosion control problems. When exiting the subsidence trough, a reduction of the gradient may inhibit stream flow, causing localized ponding (Peng, 2008). While vertical displacement and tilt both may have detrimental effects to surface streams, the resulting strains have been documented as being the most damaging to surface streams and structures causing distortion, fractures, or failure (Singh, 1992). When stream beds are subjected to high tensile strain, tensile cracks may form at the surface level allowing for the direct loss of stream flow through fissures. When stream beds are located in areas of high compressive strain, rock layers forming the stream bed can fail as the stream bed ruptures, upward, blocking stream flow or having the stream diverted into the fracture zone at the base (Iannacchione, et. al., 2010).Recent investigations on the effects of underground mining on surface bodies of water suggest that to determine the degree of stream impact one must also consider the geologic structure and thicknesses, surface topography, watershed drainage areas, width of river bed and rate of mining. Due to the complex nature and number of parameters affecting surface streams, subsidence modeling tools and software packages should be implemented throughout all stages of subsidence planning, prediction and control. The Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS) utilizes the influence function for the calculation of final subsidence deformations with respect to the angle of influence, supercritical subsidence factor as a function of the percent hard rock, edge effect offset distance, and surface topography. Developed more than 25 years ago, SDPS has been continually updated with new analysis and prediction features, providing a reliable and versatile program for subsidence management methodologies. Most recently, the program has been updated to evaluate the effect of varying surface topography in the prediction of horizontal displacements, referred to as ground strain, allowing for the accurate three-dimensional representation of surface deformations in mountainous terrain (Agioutantis and Karmis, 2014). Ground strain has become one of the predominant deformation indices used in the evaluation of potential damage to surface structures (Karmis et al., 1995). Ongoing work with SDPS software seeks to investigate the calculation of ground strain in SDPS and its ability to accurately and realistically predict damage to surface streams due to underground mining operations."

"The prediction of surface deformations due to underground mining operations has been a long recognized practice with case studies documented as far back as 1556 in Georgius Agricola's De Re Metallica (Latin for On the Nature of Minerals). There is currently increased public awareness and regulatory scrutiny on the potential impacts of underground longwall and second mining operations, but this time the focus is placed on environmental impacts to overlaying bodies of water such as streams, rivers, wetlands, lakes, etc. (Karmis and Agioutantis, 2015). Community residents and environmental groups, as well as federal and state regulatory agencies, have often cited adverse stream impacts and demanded stronger measures and scrutiny in issuing mining and reclamation permits (Booth, 2006). Mining companies are required to focus on the protection of sensitive bodies of water through the monitoring of stream flow and water quality, management and rehabilitation techniques, as well as the adoption of ""no mining zones,"" which potentially sterilize large portions of minable coal reserves. This paper examines the use of an empirical modeling approach for the protection of surface streams based on evaluation of ground strain magnitudes. Utilizing enhanced features of the Surface Deformation Prediction Software (SDPS), ground movements can be predicted accurately in the vicinity of surface bodies of water. The modeling of ground movements can aid in establishing optimum extraction sequences, while the magnitudes of anticipated subsidence can be used in the evaluation of mitigation plans when undermining surface bodies of water. The Virginia Operations of Consolidation Coal Co. include a diversity of mine fan configurations which have been tested to quantify pressure losses through the inlet ductwork. Airflow and pressure measurements were taken at four shaft sites to calculate losses for the 90-degree bend at the top of the shaft and the self-closing dampers or closing doors located between the shaft and fan. Velocity contours were then developed from the test data to determine flow patterns in each fan system component. In addition, yaw and pitch angles of airflow through the fan annulus were measured to evaluate turbulence levels created by various inlet ductwork designs. The test results indicate that proper design of the shaft collar and ductwork arrangement for main mine fans can substantially reduce system pressure losses and air turbulence. BY minimizing the pressure drop experienced on the surface, these design improvements enable the bulk of the total pressure developed by the fan(s) to be utilized in the mine.

This paper describes highlights of the Placer Dome MiniMole project - the development and testing of a robotic machine for mining narrow ore veins. A prototype hydraulically controlled robotic machine was built and tested. The machine provided a platform for testing numerous cutters in the field. Other cutters, e.g. undercutting devices, were tested in the lab. Extensive analyses were done on specific energies and cutter penetration. Three sets of quarry trials were done, then the machine was tested in an underground mine. Rock UCS values varied from 180 MPa to 230 MPa. The paper includes lessons learned and recommendations based on the project findings.

"The development of a mining project necessarily progresses through many steps, beginning with the identification of a mineral resource and continuing through project construction. Several classifications of engineering study development are described, including preliminary economic assessment (PEA) or scoping studies, prefeasibility studies (PFS), feasibility studies (FS) and regulatory codes, each with a specific project organizational objective. This paper addresses the PEA, PFS and FS types of reports that are used by companies to evaluate projects, meet regulatory requirements and seek financing. The minimum requirements for engineering studies, focusing on the needs of financial institutions considering investment in a project, are outlined. IntroductionThe financing of mining projects in recent years has come under increased scrutiny by financial institutions owing primarily to an increasing percentage of projects whose capital expenditures had overrun project budgets or had failed to produce the economic returns anticipated during the project development process. Often, unfavorable project outcomes are not the result of widespread failures of the project engineering process but arise from inadequate engineering in limited specific areas of the project scope, such as overestimated mineral reserve, inadequate mine design, insufficient metallurgical testing or underestimated capital costs. Mill facilities and process infrastructure typically are responsible for up to 80 percent of the capital expenditures required by greenfield mining projects. They are often the project areas where capital costs are inadequately developed, and consequently are the areas highly scrutinized by financial institutions. This paper offers a perspective on the level of engineering expected by financial institutions as a prerequisite to committing support to developing mining projects.The evaluation of a mining project from exploration through development and production is a lengthy and complicated process. Mine development commitment activities for a potential project are initiated when a mineral resource is identified and continue through to the start of construction. The technical feasibility and the economic viability of each project are determined during the phases of mine development with more detailed engineering data required at each stage. Gold rooms represent a high security area and preventing theft is a challenging task. Where gravity concentrates or high value unit intermediate products are present, particular and specific security procedures must be put in place. This paper describes the development and implementation which reflects best practice in gold room security. Procedures involving key holder systems, key locks, swipe cards and double locks preventing any one person having access to the gold room, including specific procedures for gravity gold concentrators, will be addressed. The use of monitoring and how to deal with alarms and potential hold ups will be reviewed. The use of cameras and archival DVD recorders is common in gold rooms. The use of electronic surveillance, movement detectors, seismic monitors and the two person policy and gold room entry procedures are described, including how to deal with visitors. The importance of confidentiality regarding smelting and gold pick-up days, plus strategies employed to minimise storing large quantities of gold on site will be presented. The role of metallurgical accounting in providing quality auditable information and the minimum standards of record keeping required is discussed. The role of the Gold Squad will be outlined. Regular auditing and risk analysis and several case studies are cited where security was deficient or improved.

The Rocklands copper project is a multilode, iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) + cobalt mineralised system located in the Eastern Fold Belt of the Mt Isa Inlier. Rocklands orebodies cover a range of oxidation zones from oxide, to supergene and primary. Each zone contains different economic minerals of interest. The supergene zones contain significant amounts of native copper and the primary zones are dominated by chalcopyrite. The juxtaposition of these oxidation zones and minerals make it an interesting mineralisation system.Current mine production sampling collects a nominal 3 kg drill chip sample from a 1 m composite, RC drilled interval. A site specific sampling procedure was needed to quantify introduced sampling error when taking grade control samples. Due to oxidation and mineralogical variation in ore zones we needed to develop a practically achievable sampling methodology that ensures minimum sample mass and sample error requirements are achieved to ensure ‘representative’ samples for all ore types.These issues are planned to be resolved using an experimentally derived method using principles from the Theory of Sampling. This method uses an experimental calibration of parameters K and a for Gy’s fundamental sampling error formula using a modified 32-piece sampling tree experiment to compile sampling nomograms for the primary and supergene ores. This paper demonstrates the process undertaken to improve the quality and standard of existing mine production sampling procedures at the Rocklands operation.Results indicate a sample mass of 5 kg for RC drill chips is appropriate for both the primary and supergene ores to achieve a fundamental error below 0.01 or 10 per cent relative error, which is slightly higher than the existing sampling protocol of 3 kg. An additional experiment is recommended to compile sampling nomograms using the exact laboratory comminution and mass reduction stage information to assess the use of a 3 kg sample. The results also indicate no changes are required to existing sampling protocols when sampling RC drill chips in primary and supergene ore at Rocklands.Sampling nomogram results also provide a useful ‘rule of thumb’ reference guide to other mining and exploration companies to help understand minimum sample mass requirements and sampling error during exploration drilling, resource evaluation and mining production stages when targeting similar IOCG mineralised systems. A sample mass of 5 kg is recommended when RC drilling similarly IOCG mineralised prospects and deposits in the Cloncurry area. Future test work is recommended when additional open cuts become active as well as including resource drilling drill core to provide better three-dimensional sample representivity.CITATION:Hawtin, M G, 2017. The Cassiar Asbestos mine is situated on McDame Mountain in northern B.C. at a mean elevation of 6000 ft (1830 m), some 6 miles (9.6 km) from the townsite /mill complex. Asbestos ore production averages 1,200,000 tons at 9% R.M.G. (Recoverable Mine Grade) and waste production is 6,000,000 cu. yd annually. Waste is loaded by P&H 1900 AL 11-cu.-yd shovels and transported by 75-ton and 85-ton end-dump trucks to the waste dumps. The ore is loaded by a 992 Caterpillar 10-cu-yd front-end loader into 50-ton and 75-ton trucks, which transport it to the crushing plant located at the mine. The ore is transported by a 15,370-ft (4685-m) tramline to the mill complex.

Both the underwater method and the rock cratering method contribute useful information in evaluating and comparing new explosive compositions. Results indicate that metallized explosive systems which contain no high explosives can be formulated to offer more energy and to do potentially more work than other slurry explosive systems. Commercial field trials are presently being conducted with a metallized explosive that does not contain any high explosive. Although there have been only a few commercial blasts to date, the results are encouraging. The Dow Chemical Co. has been engaged in explosives research since 1953. The incentive for this research was based on the desire to find additional markets and uses for magnesium metal of which DOW is a heavy producer. The thermodynamic calculations for explosives incorporating light metals indicate energies approximately twice that of nonmetallized explosives currently being used. Early in 1960, additional patent rights were acquired from independent inventors and a development station at Virginia, Minn., was set up to conduct a commercial testing and market evaluation program with this new product. The actual manufacturing of the explosive was to take place in the boreholes. Due to the complexities involved in controlling the manufacture of the explosive in the borehole, performance was sometimes in doubt. Furthermore, experience indicated that the metallized explosive systems could not be evaluated by the standard laboratory methods then being used, and it was necessary for us to look for more suitable research methods. Tests were conducted on several known methods for explosive evaluation. The most promising were the Navy underwater method for energy evaluation and a modified Livingston crater method intended to compare explosive performance in rock. After shooting over 2000 charges of 8 to 60 lb under water and in taconites and granites with many types of explosives, a metallized explosive was developed which is now being manufactured at a pilot plant in Virginia, Minn. and is being evaluated commercially. UNDERWATER METHOD An underwater method of evaluating explosives has a number of advantages. A permanent site can be established and operated indefinitely. A large number of charges may be fired in a short length of time. The medium in which the explosive is shot is exactly the same for successive shots. Data are recorded electronically minimizing human judgment. A disadvantage of the underwater method is the lack of confinement provided by the water medium. Many explosive compositions require a greater degree of confinement to develop good energy release. Although the relative significance of the two components of energy release that are usually measured, the shock energy and the bubble energy, and their relationship to breaking rock are not clearly understood, the underwater method is a valuable research tool for screening explosive compositions and gaining an insight into the manner in which explosives release their energy. Fig. 1 shows schematically the underwater apparatus. The piezoelectric gages are calibrated tourmaline crystals which convert the shock wave to an electrical impulse which is transmitted to an oscilloscope and recorded on Polaroid film. The shock traces are picked up by scopes 1 and 2. Scope 1 is timed to pick up the full trace whereas scope 2 is timed to cover the first increment of the shock trace expanded, and therefore allows full inspection of the propagation and peak pressures. The following analysis was stimulated by a previous article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev., which describes a method using formulas especially devised to calculate flow potential of extensive aquifers characterized by relatively even porosity and permeability throughout. The present discussion submits that the method was unsuitable for solving the kind of problem occurring at Eureka, where the amount of water available, rather than the flow potential, may have been the vital factor. IN an interesting article on evaluation of the water problem at Eureka, Nev.,1 W. T. Stuart describes how a difficult water problem, or one phase of it, may be evaluated by means of a small scale test. Test data are plotted by a method rendering, under certain conditions, a straight-line graph that can be projected to show how much the water table will be lowered by pumping at any specified rate for a given time. A formula is then used to determine the size of opening, or extent of workings, necessary to provide sufficient inflow to enable pumping to be maintained at that rate. At first glance this might seem the answer to a miner's prayer, but a word of caution is in order. It may not be the whole answer. Moreover, results obtained by the method described are reliable only for conditions approximating those assumed. Even where conditions do not meet this requirement, however, it may be possible to draw helpful inferences from the results, perhaps enough to facilitate another approach to evaluation of a problem. The two formulas Mr. Stuart used, the Theis formula and the one developed from it by Cooper and Jacob, were given field checks a number of years ago in valley alluvials by the Water Supply Div. of the U. S. Geological Survey and found to be reliable when the aquifer is very large in horizontal extent and sufficiently isotropic for the test well and observation wells to be in material of the same average permeability as the saturated part of the aquifer as a whole." Extensive valley alluvials, sands, and gravels can be evaluated in this way, and there are even cases in which the method could apply to porous limestones, such as flat beds of very large areal extent that have been submerged below the water table after extensive weathering. These are sometimes prolific sources of water for towns and industries. It is necessary for them to have been above the water table for some geologically long period of time in a fairly humid climate before submergence because the necessary high porosity and permeability, and large reservoir capacity, are the result of weathering, that is, of solution by the carbonic acid (H,CO3) in rainwater formed by the absorption of CO, from the air by raindrops, and this dissolving action must cease when all the H2CO3 has been consumed by re- action with the carbonate to form the more soluble bicarbonate. Consequently this weathering process is largely restricted to a zone that does not extend much below the water level, and submergence is necessary after the weathering to provide large reservoir capacity and good hydraulic continuity. On the other hand, water courses tend to form along faults and fractures in limestone, and to become enlarged by solution, well below water level when, as often happens, fresh meteoric water is circulated rapidly through them to considerable depth by hydrostatic pressure, as through an inverted syphon. Although the reservoir capacity of such water courses is relatively small they may extend far enough to tap more prolific sources. Cavities, and sometimes caves of considerable size, are found in limestones where the acid formed by the oxidation of sulphides has attacked them. This action can take place as deep below water level as surface water is carried by syphonic or artesian circulation, because the oxygen it carries in solution will not be consumed until it reacts with some reducing agent, such as a sulphide. Moreover, the formation of acid and solution of limestone in this way is not confined to the immediate vicinity of the sulphide. Oxidation of pyrite, for example, results in formation of acid in several successive stages, each taking place as more oxygen becomes available, as by the accession of fresh water into the circulation at some place beyond the sulphides. When the acid thus formed attacks the limestone, CO, is liberated and the ultimate effect of the complete oxidation of one unit of pyrite will be the removal of six times its volume of limestone as the sulphate and bicarbonate, both of which are relatively soluble. The reaction may be continued or renewed along a water course far from the site of the sulphides, where the small electric potential produced by contact with the limestone helped to start the reaction. Mr. Stuart refers2 0 caves in the old mining area in the block of Eldorado limestone southwest of the Ruby Hill fault at Eureka, Nev., and to the cavities encountered in drillholes in the downthrown block on the other side of the fault. Although he interprets these cavities as evidence that this formation was sufficiently isotropic (evenly porous and permeable) to give reliable results by the method he describes, they may, in fact, be entirely local conditions. The first two are covered in the literature where their advantages, as well as limitations, are discussed.'9' Generally a theoretical approach combines structural geology with engineering mechanics. The former deals with the geodynamic causes of residual stresses (stresses not related to overburden weight) and presents interesting, but controversial, views.'" A relatively simple and effective technique is proposed to deal with the failure of geologic masses containing weakness planes. This technique, termed irextended" rupture envelope, provides a means to clearly distinguish rock and soil from fractured rock and, on a theoretical level, considers a matrix-inclusion system. It may also constitute the link between Mohr's and Griffith's failure theories. Included in the article are five sample problems concerning site location, structural design, strengthening the plane of weakness, changing the magnitudes of major and minor principal stresses and changing the orientations of major and minor principal stresses. Engineers trying to solve design problems in rock and soil mechanics have often assumed an iso-tropic and homogeneous medium. For naturally occurring geologic masses this assumption has always been viewed with regret. The following analysis which deals with the effects of plane anisotropy on failure presents a solution to this. The planes of weakness are joints, faults, bedding planes, fracture and cleavage (natural and induced), foliation and schistosity. The physical properties of these weakness planes include an undulating surface, frictional resistance, discontinuous extent, filling material, tightness and presence of water to cause a hydrostatic pore pressure. All of these properties relating to failure can be summarized in Mohr's rupture envelope for the plane of weakness. This, along with the geometrical orientation, strike and dip, of the plane of weakness produces what is termed an irextended" rupture envelope. A deposit Of limestone Was known to exist at a depth of 2000 ft under the property of the Columbia Chemical Division of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. at Barber-ton, Ohio. A 662-acre site was selected for the projected mine, some two miles northwest of the plant and near the main line of the Erie Railway. An electric railway 8800 ft in length connects the mine and the plant. The deposit is overlain by 18 ft of un-consolidated (sand and gravel), 100 ft of water-bearing sandstone, and finally 2080 ft of shale into which thin layers of sandstone are embedded. The limestone bed itself is 345 ft thick and overlies 200 ft of gypsum. A 300-ton-per-hour capacity mine was decided upon. Two shafts were deemed advisable, one for production and the second for service; and these were sunk 550 ft apart, one to a depth of 2323 ft and the other to 2258 ft. Each is 16 X , ft in the clear and timbered with 6-in. steel H-sets on 8-ft centers, using 3/8 X 4 X 4-in. angles as studdles. Twelve inch I-beams were used at 160 ft intervals as bearers set in deep hitches and concreted to a vertical depth of 8 ft. Wooden sheathing was first employed but sloughing of the shale created a pressure on this lining and finally concrete was deemed necessary. Water was encountered only within the first 315 ft, flowing at 60 gpm and by grouting this was reduced to 15 gpm. Temporary wooden sinking headframes were installed with 300 cu ft capacity storage pockets and with doors automatically controlled by air cylinders by hoistmen. Each shaft was operated on four 6-hr shifts. The usual V-cut was drilled at the center of the shaft and the round consisted of 34 holes- A 40 pet gelatin dynamite was employed with some 60 pet in the cut holes. Drilling crews consisted of four to six men. Shale drilled easily but became more bed in depth and sandstone wore away the gauge Of the bits rapidly. A room-and-pillar mining system was adopted whereby rooms turned off on 80-ft centers, each room 40-ft wide and 50-ft high. Rib pillars between rooms were cut into 100 ft lengths by frequent holes. Ventilation is achieved through the two shafts, the down-draft through the service shaft, and the return through the pr0duction shaft. The hoist has a a Of 300 tons per hour and is equipped with 10-ton balanced skips requiring. a 2-min cycle Or 30 trips Per hour- Hoisting is designed to Operate by automatic loading and no hoistman is required for normal Operation. A deposit Of limestone Was known to exist at a depth of 2000 ft under the property of the Columbia Chemical Division of the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Co. at Barber-ton, Ohio. A 662-acre site was selected for the projected mine, some two miles northwest of the plant and near the main line of the Erie Railway. An electric railway 8800 ft in length connects the mine and the plant. The deposit is overlain by 18 ft of un-consolidated (sand and gravel), 100 ft of water-bearing sandstone, and finally 2080 ft of shale into which thin layers of sandstone are embedded. The limestone bed itself is 345 ft thick and overlies 200 ft of gypsum. A 300-ton-per-hour capacity mine was decided upon. Two shafts were deemed advisable, one for production and the second for service; and these were sunk 550 ft apart, one to a depth of 2323 ft and the other to 2258 ft. Each is 16 X , ft in the clear and timbered with 6-in. steel H-sets on 8-ft centers, using 3/8 X 4 X 4-in. angles as studdles. Twelve inch I-beams were used at 160 ft intervals as bearers set in deep hitches and concreted to a vertical depth of 8 ft. Wooden sheathing was first employed but sloughing of the shale created a pressure on this lining and finally concrete was deemed necessary. Water was encountered only within the first 315 ft, flowing at 60 gpm and by grouting this was reduced to 15 gpm. Temporary wooden sinking headframes were installed with 300 cu ft capacity storage pockets and with doors automatically controlled by air cylinders by hoistmen. Each shaft was operated on four 6-hr shifts. The usual V-cut was drilled at the center of the shaft and the round consisted of 34 holes- A 40 pet gelatin dynamite was employed with some 60 pet in the cut holes. Drilling crews consisted of four to six men. Shale drilled easily but became more bed in depth and sandstone wore away the gauge Of the bits rapidly. A room-and-pillar mining system was adopted whereby rooms turned off on 80-ft centers, each room 40-ft wide and 50-ft high. Rib pillars between rooms were cut into 100 ft lengths by frequent holes. Ventilation is achieved through the two shafts, the down-draft through the service shaft, and the return through the pr0duction shaft. The hoist has a a Of 300 tons per hour and is equipped with 10-ton balanced skips requiring. a 2-min cycle Or 30 trips Per hour- Hoisting is designed to Operate by automatic loading and no hoistman is required for normal Operation. The idea of a portable crusher is not new. Many such crushers are available but they are small and designed for construction work. For many years the author has suggested, both in this country and in Europe, the building of larger portable crushers intended expressly for use in quarries or open pits. Although not applicable under all conditions, there are mining operations where a mobile crusher arrangement could be more profitable than the facilities now used. The primary use of a portable crusher, i.e., a crusher mounted on crawlers or tires, in the rock and mining industries is to reduce costs by permitting the substitution of conveyor belt haulage for truck or track haulage. The usual sequence of operations in surface mining is drilling, blasting, loading, haulage, and crushing. Haulage is normally accomplished by truck or track-mounted cars, the latter method being used for the longer distances. However, by using a portable crusher in the pit, the sequence of operations would be changed so that the crushing stage would occur before haulage (Fig. 1). Such a sequence would permit the use of conveyors to replace the more expensive truck or track haulage methods. Since most quarry and open pit operations normally require a crushing stage, the only additional costs incurred will be due to the investment required to purchase or construct a mobile arrangement for a crusher. But this factor has to be weighed against the advantages to be gained by conveyor haulage. As shown in Fig. 2, transportation of material by belt conveyor over short distances is less expensive than by truck. The inclination of the belt has no effect on belt speed; consequently, the hourly tonnage moved remains the same. Conversely, the output rate of trucks as expressed in tons or ton-miles per shift decreases proportionally to the haulage speed, which is considerably slowed by the steepness of the road (Fig. 3, left). Although maximum possible grades and maximum economic grades of haulage are greater for a belt than for a truck (over the same total lift), the longer haulage distances favor the use of trucks. Although power consumption for hauling on a grade increases for both conveyances, the rate of power consumption increases faster for trucks than for conveyor belts (Fig. 3, right). Since the output rate and related fixed costs are affected by the travel speed, total haulage costs with trucks would increase with the grade more rapidly than the similar costs of conveyor belts (Fig. 4). Travel distance, road grade, speed, size and number of pieces of equipment, efficiency of operation, and many other factors affect such haulage costs. In general terms it can be said that the shorter the distance, the steeper the grade, and the greater the output, the more advantageous the belt becomes in comparison to truck or track haulage. In addition to potential cost savings in haulage procedures, a portable crusher would allow better utilization and performance of shovels. Loading operations would not be interrupted as often by the necessity of waiting for cars or trucks. Unfortunately, the application of belts in open pits for haulage from bench sites is generally not practical under existing conditions because a belt fed directly by a mechanical shovel can be torn, damaged, or worn out quickly by the large rock fragments falling on it during loading. However, by using a mobile crusher this situation can be avoided. As shown in Fig. 1 (b), the shovel feeds rock into the crusher located behind it. The crushed material is initially transported by an extensible and/or movable belt, thence by a longer stationary conveyor to the plant where the material is subjected to further treatment by secondary crushing, screening, etc. The first-mentioned conveyor, needed to bridge the distance between the shovel and the stationary conveyor, is necessarily variable in length owing to the continuous movement of the shovel and the desire to keep the stationary belt at a safe distance from the bench during blasting operations. The remarkable part of mobile crusher operations is the extra-ordinarily high output per man-shift, the low maintenance and power requirements for haulage, and the increased output of the loading shovel. A cement quarry which has been using a portable crusher and conveyor since 1956 requires only three men to operate the shovel and crusher and to transport the crushed rock by belt from the quarry face to the screening plant. TO assist the mining industry in attacking problems of water control, the U. S. Geological Survey has begun a program of research in mining hydrology. In certain fundamental respects water control is similar to development of water supplies from wells or to the drainage of agricultural lands, as many of the tools developed in recent years for quantitative ground-water problems are applicable, with modification, to mine-water problems. In 1952 a 30-day pumping test conducted jointly by the Eureka Corp. Ltd. and the Defense Minerals Exploration Agency provided an opportunity to gain knowledge concerning water movements around a flooded mine shaft. The methods of analyzing the data may be used as a guide for the evaluation of similar problems elsewhere. The Fad shaft of the Eureka Corp. is on Ruby Hill, 1 1/2 miles west of Eureka, Nev. The shaft was completed at a depth of 2465 ft in November 1947 at a site adjacent to the downfaulted block in which the ore was found. As the drift on the 2250 level progressed toward the ore zone, a large flow of water was encountered after the Martin fault was intersected. This flow exceeded the installed pump capacity, and an unsuccessful attempt to recover the shaft and the 2250 level was made in 1948.1, 2 Geology and Hydrology: The complex structure of Ruby Hill is that of an anticline broken first by thrust faulting and later by normal faults. The present orebody comprises several mineralized zones within a block of the Eldorado limestone of middle Cambrian age which was downfaulted 1400 to 1600 ft, and it may be related to a similar body mined at a higher level south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the depth of the largest zone of ore the block is roughly rectangular in shape, about 1000 ft wide and 1500 ft long, and dips about 30" NE, see Fig. 1. It is apparently bounded on the south by the Ruby Hill fault, on the east by the Jackson fault, on the north by the Martin fault, and the west by the Bowman fault. Within the block, but between the Ruby Hill and the Martin faults, are the Office and Adams Hills faults; west of the block and the Bowman fault are the Albion and Spring Valley faults. There are many conflicting reports concerning the water-yielding characteristics of the Eldorado limestone and the condition of the fault zones, that is, whether they are open or tight. However, the diamond-drill records indicate that open spaces as much as 2 or 3 ft across were encountered, and considerable cementing and lining of holes was necessary to maintain circulation of drilling fluid. There is also evidence that the Eldorado limestone was cavernous where it was mined in the early days south of the Ruby Hill fault. At the site of the Fad shaft the formations encountered from the surface down included the Pogonip limestone, Dunderberg shale, Hamburg limestone, and Secret Canyon shale. These formations did not yield large quantities of water to the shaft. The Pogonip limestone, which appears to be permeable and might yield water elsewhere, is above the water table in the vicinity of the shaft. The Secret Canyon shale, immediately overlying the Eldorado in some places but in most places separated from it by the Geddes limestone,3 is apparently tight and does not transmit water. During the 30-day test period the shale briefly confined the water in the underlying formations so that artesian conditions were observed in drillholes E and F, which are cased into the Eldorado limestone, whereas unconfined conditions were observed in drillholes B, C, and D, which were open to the shale. The Geddes limestone, which normally lies between the Secret Canyon shale and the Eldorado limestone, was not encountered in the Fad shaft. The Geddes, a flaggy, fractured limestone, is reported capable of yielding large volumes of water. Water stored in the interstices of this thin-bedded limestone within the Ruby Hill fault zone on the 1200 level of the Locan shaft drowned the pumps in 1923 when the Richmond-Eureka Mining Co. attempted to explore the area along the fault. Eldorado limestone was not encountered in the Fad shaft. In the ore-block area the Eldorado limestone was not entirely offset from other water-yielding formations by movement along the Bowman fault; therefore it may be hydraulically connected with the other formations. Adjacent to the Ruby Hill, Jackson, and Martin faults, the Eldorado lies in contact with other possible water-yielding formations. One of these, the Prospect Mountain quartzite, is separated from the Eldorado by thin, sheared, and broken beds of the Geddes within the Ruby Hill fault zone. A limited examination by the author of the Prospect Mountain quartzite in the Richmond mine at a higher level and south of the Ruby Hill fault indicates that the quartzite is poorly permeable. The monzonite mass south of the quartzite would be a further barrier to the flow of water. The poor permeability of this area is substantiated by records of levels at which water was encountered south of the Ruby Hill fault. In view of the normally low rate of ground-water recharge, if this desert area had been permeable, water levels could not have been maintained at altitudes of many hundred feet above the present water table west and north of Ruby Hill. Thus the ore-bearing block of Eldorado limestone is in contact with possible water-yielding rocks on at least two sides, and if the fault zones are possible conduits for water circulation the geologic and hydrologic conditions are suitable for the infinite-aquifer type of analysis as used and modified here. History of Pumping: During sinking of the Fad shaft a maximum pumping rate of 1500 gpm kept the shaft dewatered sufficiently, but in March 1948, after the 2250 level drift passed through the Martin fault into the Eldorado limestone, the pumps and shaft were flooded. Complete details are given of the drilling method by which two shafts were sunk at the new Beatm'x mine of Staatsmijnen in the Netherlands. The nature of the rock strata in the Dutch mining district determined choice of the drilling rather than the freezing method. Data for each step and details of the equipment used are given in the illustrations. Staatsmijnen was founded in 1902 with government financial backing, but it is run as a private enterprise, on a commercial basis, with the normal fiscal obligations. The company now has four mines in operation with annual outputs amounting to 7 1/2 million tons of coal. In 1952 it was determined that a new mine—the Beatrix—would be opened. Details of the shaft-sinking operation are described in this paper. SHAFT LOCATION The coal-bearing carboniferous rock in the Dutch mining district is overlain almost completely by soft water-bearing strata, which at the site of the new shafts are about 1600 ft thick. The sinking of the new shafts through this soft water-bearing overburden (Fig. 1) is a costly and time-consuming affair. From the two availaible sinking methods: 1) Poetsch's well known freezing method or 2) the drilling method of Honigmann-de Vooys, the latter was preferred, not only because of its relative cheapness, under the prevailing conditions, but primarily because by using the drilling process, a special type of shaft lining of steel, concrete, and bitumen could be used. The new shafts, located 330 ft apart, have an inner diameter of 18 ft, 4 1/2 in. The boreholes, which have a diameter of 25 ft and which were drilled through nearly 1600 ft of overburden and some 100 ft of carboniferous, each contain more than 29,000 cu yd—by far the largest in the world. DRILLING METHOD The drilling method is based on the use of mud-flush—a thin mixture of clay and water—to keep the borehole filled during the entire drilling period and during insertion of the lining (Fig. 2). An annual invitational address by an outstanding man in mining, geology, or geophysics who has contributed significantly to the progress of technology in these fields. IN 1954, the first year the award was conferred, Fred Searles, Jr., remarked, "The earlier years are the easiest." In this, the second year, it was easy to choose the outstanding mining engineer. Our conferee this year has been destined to mine. He comes from pioneer stock, and though a son of the American Revolution he is most proud that all four of his grandparents came to the Jordan River Valley of Utah the "first summer," which all Utahns will recognize as 1847. At the time of discovery of high-grade ore in Bingham, his grandfather, Archibald Gardner, had a crew of men getting out saw timber in the area. The first claim staked in Bingham Canyon was named the Jordan, and Bishop Gardner was the colocator of the claim as well as the man to record it. E. D. Gardner was born in West Jordan, Utah, in view of Little Cottonwood Canyon, the site of the Emma Mine. Park City in the Wasatch Mountains a few dozen miles to the east, and Tintic, not much further to the south, were developing their vast ore-bodies throughout his youth. As a boy he was near the present Midvale metallurgical area and could see the Lark and Bingham Canyon mine dumps and imagine the mining activities at Tooele, Ophir, and Mercur just over the nearby Oquirrh Range. He was 11 years old when the first car of copper ore was shipped from Bingham Canyon. It was not surprising that he attended the University of Utah and graduated with an engineer of mines degree. Five years with the Utah Apex in Bingham Canyon as chief engineer and assistant superintendent completed his training for the 44 years of unselfish and lightly rewarded service he was to give the mining industry as a Government engineer. All of us in mining are familiar with the great work he carried on and directed during the genera- tion he supervised the Southwest Experimental Station at Tucson. He has written scores of papers and books. His observations and experiments on drilling and blasting have led to the important improvements in this field during the past quarter century. Whereas those of us who consider ourselves widely informed about underground metal mining methods make hasty trips through a half dozen or dozen mines a year, our conferee has visited them all—not only the metal mines, but also coal and hundreds of nonmetallic mines, in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and overseas. His keen observations and analytical mind have resulted in an encyclopedic knowledge of mining and mines. His improvements in mining technology have been steady and predictable. His elucidation of mining problems to the many young engineers that have come under his guidance have made them grow strong and useful to his industry. When he chooses to stop, his influence will continue to expand and prosper because of the inspiration and dedication he instilled in so many of us. The profits from his ideas have been distributed throughout the mining industry. He has remained a technical man who felt that he could serve the mining industry best as a Government engineer. But he is the staunchest advocate of the belief that the public should gain from his work through private industry. This is not the first recognition E. D. Gardner has received. The Department of the Interior awarded him the coveted Medal for Distinguished Service in October 1949, and he received the Engineering & Mining Journal's Salute in March 1951. His friends who are presenting him the Daniel C. Jackling Award today know this great mining engineer simply as "Ed" Gardner.
