Environmental incidents involving mine tailings and waste rock inevitably become highly publicised and serve to damage the credibility of the entire industry. The recent serious incident involving a spill from a Romanian mine, was blamed for triggering æone of the worst environmental catastrophes in Eastern EuropeÆ. It is important to clearly demonstrate to the general public that these incidents are not representative of the industry as a whole. Where such incidents have occurred, the causes are generally related to poor design and/or construction, inadequate supervision and/or monitoring and maintenance, lack of independent expertise, inadequate risk identification and treatment and no provision to ensure that rehabilitation and long term management of the site occurs. Many people are unaware that these issues have been considered and provided for at the Martha Mine. Despite the fact that the first tailings storage facility has performed very well over fifteen years of operation, the long term safety and security of the tailings storage facilities continues to be questioned and debated by the public. The best way to address this is to provide quality information to enable a better understanding amongst the general public.

This paper is about a horizontally curved conveyor, which carries 6,050 stph of limestone over land from a new quarry to the owner's plant. The conveyor is 5,012 ft long with a horizontal curve radius of5,OOOft Site conditions made a curved conveyor design the most optimal and economic solution. Using our unique custom conveyor calculation program, TKRI was able to accurately model and design the conveyor to properly track the belt and prevent any spillage through the horizontal curve radius. A data monitoring system was installed that allows monitoring of the conveyor both locally and remotely. The remote monitoring allows TKRI to contact the owner for preventive maintenance. Preventive maintenance can reduce the conveyor downtime during normal operating hours.

Introduction Atlas Consolidated Mining and Development Corp. (ACMDC) started gold production at its Masbate gold mine early in 1980. This involved an open-pit mine and a 3.5-k/d (3850-stpd) carbon-in-pulp processing facility (Pizzaro and Antonio, 1981). When this operation started, the mine began stockpiling sub-grade milling material averaging 1 g/t (0.029 oz per st) gold. Furthermore, geologists estimated that there were additional low grade reserves within the ultimate pit limits. These amounted to 2.4 Mt (2.6 million st) with an average grade of 1.1 g/t (0.03 oz per st) gold. The success of low cost heap leaching prompted an investigation to determine if this tech¬nique would be applicable for the low grade Masbate ore. The findings were favorable and a series of laboratory tests were undertaken. These tests indicated the amenability of this subgrade milling ore to heap leaching. Depending on ore size, gold extractions of more than 60% were obtained. To further define operating parameters for a commercial heap leaching plant, a 400-t (440-st) batch pilot plant was built and operated. These test results were used to design the first commercial heap leaching plant in the Philippines. One design concern was the control of solutions during the rainy season. Due to the material's low grade, every effort was made to minimize capital and operating costs. To this end, surplus mining equipment from the copper operations of ACMDC and used machinery in the crushing circuit were considered. Location: The Masbate gold heap leaching operations are located on the northeastern part of Masbate Island, Philippines. This is about 480 km (300 miles) south-east of Manila. Climate: The climate is moderate with two distinct periods. The dry season runs from January through June, and the rainy season extends from July through December. During the wet season, the rainfall at the mine site averages 300 mm/m (11.8 in. per month) for a total of about 2000 mm/year (78 in. per year). However, heavy downpours in excess of 100 mm/h (4 in. per hour) can occur. Geology: Four distinct rock types have been identified in the pit area. They are tuffaceous agglomerates, andesitic agglomerates, metasedimentary rocks, and hornblende augite andesitic porphyry. The tuffaceous agglomerate occupies the northern and western flanks of the mine. Andesitic agglomerates are localized distinctly in the central portion of the volcanic plug within the mine site. The eastern boundary of the mine is occupied by metasedimentary rocks, whereas, the hornblende augite andesitic porphyry occurs as an intrusive within the andesitic agglomerate and tuffaceous agglomerate. Some areas of the pit contain high proportions of clay minerals, requiring an agglomeration step in the flowsheet. This ensures satisfactory percolation through the heaps. The "mass balance" is unquestionably the most common class of problems for the process engineer'. Closely related, mathematically, is the "heat balance". Every laboratory test requires a mass balance to describe the results. Mass balance calculations can be subdivided into several sub-categories based on whether the results are time dependant or not and depending on whether the input data are measurements that contain errors or are hypothetical values with no errors. Time dependent mass balances are dynamic process simulations and in addition to the conservation of mass constraints require kinetic data input. They are one step beyond simple mass balances.

At 11 am Monday 8 September 1997, the successful detonation of the 5/9 Mass Blast at Pasminco - Elura was signified by the subsiding of æMt KevinÆ (a 15 m high earth fill mound). The blast was in response to earlier mine subsidence, which holed through to the surface affecting future stability of underground workings. The blast was a first for Elura which fires small tonnages regularly to avoid rapid oxidation of the ore. This paper discusses the strategy and the considerable planning that went into EluraÆs first blast of this magnitude in order to succeed first time round.

Mass Blasts are generally required at the completion of longhole stoping cycles to maximise the recovery of ore from a specific orebody. During the course of mining, the practice is to leave pillars of ore to support the opening left by extracted ore and to mitigate stresses from working areas of the stope. These pillars usually contain ore that has been included in the resource evaluation and is highly valuable to the mining operation. Due to their stressed nature, the removal of pillars by conventional blasting techniques, through small blasts, can result in pillars being reduced beyond their critical size and ultimately failing, rendering the ore unrecoverable. The AurionGold Kanowna Belle Gold Mine operates a Mine to Mill philosophy. This philosopy requires the fine tuning of blasting to provide the best possibe ore feed at the highest grade for mill productivity. This means that ore to the mill must be well fragmented from blasting that provides high extraction rates from draw points, with minimal dilution from overbreak or fall off, and sized to maximise SAG mill throughput. The AT04 Mass Blast contained significant ore reserves which were required to meet gold production targets. KBGB needed the AT04 Mass Blast to perform as well as if not better than conventional stope blasts to maintain mill production. This paper describes the circumstances, planning philosophy, techniques, including the use of Electronic Initiation Systems and Bulk Emulsion Explosives, and results that provided a highly successful outcome.

Traditional loading systems have relied for many years on wheel and track loaders, power shovels, conveyor belts, and more recently, hydraulic front shovels. Each has certain advantages and disadvantages, depending largely on job conditions. Hydraulic backhoes were introduced several years ago as still another truck loading option. At first, buckets were small and backhoe use was limited to small earthmoving projects. Now, as backhoes are equipped with shorter sticks and bigger buckets to move larger quantities of earth. The "mass excavation" concept offers an excellent truck loading option in many situations. System Development and Advantages Mass excavation was first used successfully by contractors in site development and highway construction, loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks. Operators were able to take advantage of the excavator's ability to work in poor underfoot conditions and dig in tough materials. The technique was first applied to mining in the kaolin mines of central Georgia. Kaolin, one of the world's most abundant minerals, is used to make paper, paint, ceramics, rubber, plastics, and many other products. Since kaolin clay is slippery when wet, load-out with wheel loaders is very inefficient. Also, kaolin is found in very spotty deposits due to the weathering process involved in its formation. Consequently, draglines are also impractical for kaolin mining since they don't have the mobility to move between clay deposits. In response to these mining conditions and kaolin characteristics, mines began using excavators in mass excavation as early as 1976. They have developed a system that takes advantage of the excavator's •high penetration and breakout force in tight materials; •fast-cycling hydraulics; •ability to work in poor underfoot conditions; and •mobility in comparison to draglines. This loading method has been successful in Georgia's kaolin mines and now can be applied to other mining operations as well. A model has been developed that describes the behavior of mineral particles and water in the cleaning zone of flotation columns. The possible detachment of particles from their sites of attachment at the bubble surfaces is related to the flux of bubble surface area with increasing distance from the interface between the collection and cleaning zones and the late at which floated particles are transported into the cleaning zone. The drainage velocities of floated and entrained particles are calculated from the drainage velocity of water and the properties of the particles. The effects of wash water and inhibited drainage in the froth are also explicitly accounted for.

"The geology and origins of volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits in the Abitibi belt of northwestern Quebec have been the subject of discussion since the discovery of the Horne orebodies in Noranda in 1923.The present Noranda version of the VMS model characterizes the ideal deposit as a stratabound, base-metal accumulation that is in close spatial relationship with hydrothermal alteration and stockwork zones, felsic lava domes, coarse phreatic-pyroclastic breccias, and subvolcanic intrusions that characterize vent- and proximal{acies submarine volcanic environments. Deposits tend to occur in a favorable stratigraphic interval within a mining camp, and this is well-documented in the Rouyn-Noranda and Matagami camps.However, in recent years many VMS deposits have been shown to deviate from the ideal Noranda-type. For example, the Ansi/ deposit is characterized by sulphide-bearing alteration zones that extend far above the massive sulfide lenses, and by abundant magnetite immediately underlying massive sulfide. The Horne deposit appears to lack the typical chloritic alteration pipe underlying the massive sulfide lenses, as well as laterally-equivalent exhalite horizons. The Horne and Quemont deposits, besides being the two giants of the camp, are particularly rich in gold, whereas others, such as WaiteAmulet and Millenbach, have low gold values. Finally, some deposits in the Noranda camp, such as the Ansil, Corbet and Mobrun mines, are outside the favorable stratigraphic interval. Therefore, it would appear that part of the key to renewing base metal reserves in northwestern Quebec is the use of evolving descriptive-genetic models that incorporate geological variations like those cited above."

During a series of dives with the submersible ALVIN in 1984, samples of massive sulfide were recovered from four vent sites. All sites occur within a linear, steep-walled cleft about 50 m wide and as much as 30 m deep. The cleft bisects the axial valley floor throughout the 15-km-long study area and appears to have been the source for the most recent volcanic eruptions in the valley. Three of the vent sites are defined by a set of discrete hydrothermal discharge zones; as many as eight have been identified over a distance of 500-800 m along the cleft floor. Sulfide deposits occur as individual and coalesced mounds, spires, and chimneys generally less than 3 m in height but a few might be as high as 10 m. The vents are also marked by extensive, yellow-to-amber ferruginous sediment and clots of bacterial matter. Some vents have extensive colonies of tube worms, gastropods, mollusks, and several predator species, such as crabs and squid. The fourth vent site has no visible discharge and consists mainly of "dead" spires and chimneys of massive sulfide. The massive sulfide samples collected with ALVIN are primarily sphalerite with minor marcasite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, isocubanite, chalcopyrite, wurtzite, and anhydrite. Bulk analyses of these chimney and spire samples show Zn contents approaching 60% by weight and significant enrichments in Ag and Cu. Vent fluids have the highest concentrations yet reported for Zn, Fe, and Mn. Thus, the Zn- and Ag-rich nature of massive sulfide from the southern Juan de Fuca Ridge study area

"MASSIVE sulphide deposits are found in two areas of New Brunswick, the St. Stephen area and the Bathurst-Newcastle area. In both, the geology in the immediate vicinity of the sulphide bodies is largely inferred from drilling results as outcrop is not plentiful and is, in fact, almost lacking in most places. With few exceptions these deposits have not been explored by underground methods. Consequently much of the. detail on the geology will only become known over a period of years as economic conditions make mining feasible.Much of the information contained in this paper has been supplied directly by company geologists. As a result of the number of contributors, some confusion of nomenclature bas to be anticipated. Cross-sections and plans of the individual deposits are, in most cases, as supplied by the companies concerned. Most of the interpretations are the responsibility of the author."

"AT PRESENT, it is not certain that any of the sulphide de in the Province of Nova Scotia attain the lower grade limit of 60 per cent sulphides over the minimum area of 1,000 square feet suggested as cut-off specifications for inclusion in this Symposium. However, several of them do include massive sections of substantial size and others represent concentrations of sulphide material that are well above average. It is felt, therefore, that a tentative classification of the deposits and presentation of their geological settings are justified and may help round out the genetic aspects of this study. Accordingly, data considered to be the most pertinent are assembled here in the event that some may fit into larger-scale patterns of mineralization that may take shape as a result of this investigation.The three principal massive sulphide deposits in Nova Scotia are the Stirling, the Smithfield, and the Walton. The locations of these are shown on the accompanying key-map (Figure 1).Three other deposits, the locations of which are also indicated on the map, are the Meat Cove, Rocky Brook, and Gays River de¬posits. Although these fall far short of the minimum dimensions and grade specifications referred to above they are singled out because they have received more than passing attention and are illustrative of the mineralization types to which they belong."

The metalliferous deposits of British Columbia are largely confined to that portion of the Cordilleran province lying west of the Rocky Mountain trench. Massive sulphides in the coastal area carry important copper •values together with lead and zinc and are composed mainly of pyrite which replaces schists or shear zones. The massive sulphide ore of the interior, on the other hand, contains lead and zinc with little copper. Pyrrhotite rather than pyrite is... the dominant metallic and deposition took place through selective replacement of sedimentary beds.

One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. American Tire Corp. (www.americantire.us) is one of the companies working to supply tires to the mining industry. It announced that the demand for its 1.6-m (63-in.) tires that have a zero failure history globally is great and that the company signed contracts worth more than $500 million at MinExpo. Brazilian companies have adopted in recent years new management practices to remain competitive. Specialized consulting in asset management progressively creates or adapts new techniques in order to increase availability and reduce manufacturing costs, maximizing profits. New engineering concepts were acquired and implemented by executives in all business segments. Techniques, such as FMEA, RCM, LCC, Pas 55, Reliability studies by Monte Carlo simulations, among others, have become increasingly recognized as important tools to enhance managerial performance. Besides these techniques, this study suggests the importance of adequate structuring of a lubrication program, as a critical success factor for the reliability of any asset. Through a case study developed with a company in the mining sector, this work proposes the development of a master plan for lubrication based on three pillars: People, Equipment and Management system. Practices and care with lubricants, hydraulic fluids and coolant, until its point of application, shall be evaluated to ensure a correct contamination control and a high level of assets availability. This discussion sheds light onto other benefits of this process, including occupational health and safety; ergonomics; environment and sustainability.

In Victoria’s onshore Gippsland Basin, geology is driving brown coal developments, and geologists are key decision-makers. Prompted by volatile energy prices and the likelihood of a carbon constrained future, significant work has been carried out on the next generation of technologies to be applied to this giant resource. These include new-generation gasification technologies, coal conversion processes yielding products as diverse as diesel and fertiliser, drying technologies producing thermal and metallurgical coals and in situ conversion processes. However, coals aren’t coals, and brown coal available for new projects will have different quality parameters and mining economics from that currently mined.New projects are likely to be developed on coals with moisture contents averaging 60 per cent and corresponding low energy values. Whilst ash values will be low, averaging just 5 per cent (dry basis), this will at times approach 10 per cent, which is a level that would challenge the installed-generation technologies. Sulfur values will average 0.4 per cent (dry basis), but at times exceed 0.6 per cent, requiring technologies that address the potential for sulfur dioxide emissions. Whilst localised high levels of the fluxes iron (>1 per cent dry basis) and sodium (>0.3 per cent dry basis) would increase fouling of installed technologies, they may be suitable for selected next-generation technologies.Project viability for this next generation of technologies will be strongly influenced by mining cost, and geologists are playing a role in identifying higher-value coal. At its simplest, this is being achieved for open cut mines through regional, vertical strip ratio assessments, which are considered a first-order proxy for mining cost. Follow up assessments are incorporating mining and processing cost, coal quality penalties and product revenues. At a regional scale, it is informing the likely location and relative timing of future mine developments, as well as thinking around rehabilitation strategies, infrastructure and land-use planning.For deeper coal, factors like macro permeability, the ability to isolate seams from aquifers, groundwater chemistry, pressure temperature conditions, connection with groundwater recharge and in situ biota are being used as vectors to in situ coal conversion opportunities.Matching coal to the next generation of technologies has benefited from regional-scale geological studies of coal quality and mining economics, and has benefited from early engagement between geologists, technology developers and project proponents.CITATION:Maher, S and Love, G, 2014. Interlocking material balances on complex mineral dressing plants greatly assist in metallurgical investigations: indeed, without such a balance, there is no firm basis upon which to base process performance evaluations. To achieve balances both qualitative and quantitative data must be rationalised in conjunction with the process flowsheet. WSL has developed a range of programs to evaluate interlocking material balances. However, to obtain maximum benefit from the balances, answers of direct value at the process level must be provided: WSL has developed also a range of programs for this purpose. Practical examples are given, which illustrate the benefits obtained from process balances.
