"HIsmelt has faced and overcome many challenges in the understanding and development of injection technologies that satisfy process and engineering requirements for further scale up to a commercial plant.An overview of the design basis of bottom and top injection systems with plant results are described in this paper.IntroductionAn appropriate way to introduce this paper is to initially reflect on the genesis of the HIsmelt Process.It is appropriate that Professor Womer is the one we are honouring as it can be claimed that by the involvement of CRA in the WORCRA process that the concepts for irijection systems in iron and steel pyrometallurgical processes achieved significant attention by the company. The development of water cooled injection lances and their application injecting solids and gases with success was certainly a pre-cursor to the development of other injection systems commonly used today in arc furnaces and for top injection at HIsmelt.HistOrically it was the work of Savard and Lee in Canada with shrouded tuyeres and the subsequent commercialisation of this technology at the Maxhiitte Steelworks spawning the suite of bottom oxygen blown process as known as QBOP; OBM and the subsequent combined blowing process such as KOBM that first commercially succeeded in injecting solids under a molten metal bath. The next progressive step from the injection of calcined lime in the technology development was the injection of coal for coal gasification as developed by Klöckner technologies being called KG, KSG and KMS and also the injection of coal for increased scrap melting.A paradigm shift in thought process to leap from steelmaking and coal gasification to direct smelting by injecting coal and iron ore into a molten metal bath in the correct stoichiometric ratio to maintain the bath at a constant temperature and carbon level was the true genesis .of HIsmelt.A good overview of the state of the art of tuyere type injection technology is given in Ref. 1."

"Advantages of gas/flux injection technology as materialized in the main stay unit processes for steelmaking are depicted covering hot metal pretreatment through secondary refining. Current status of micro-kinetic issues involved in the injection technology are reviewed including gas-in- metal, gas-in-slag, flux-in-metal, metal-in-flux and three-phase dispersion systems with reference to macro-kinetics. Key problems are briefly addressed to further develop injection technology for steelmaking processes.1. FROM PAST TO PRESENTApplication of gas injection to steel industry started in early 1950's when inert gas bubbling via stopper rod, lance, or porous refractory plug was practiced to make the temperature of steel melt in ladle uniform The gas bubbling in ladle was then extended to slightly removing hydrogen ti'om the steel melt tapped from Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and Basic Open Hearth Furnace (BOH) when vacuum processing facilities were not popular. Later, oxygen gas injection via calorized steel pipe into molten steel bath in BOH Furnace was also put into operation to promote the decarburization to increase the productivity of the process. This line of development has been made in parallel with more profound processes, i.e, top blowing Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) for primary steelmaking and side blowing Argon Oxygen Oecarburization (AOD) vessel for decarburizing stainless steels.On the other hand, injection of fluxes into steel bath was first industrialized in Germany in 1960's, Primary objective was to desulfurize steel melt in ladle by injecting CaC2 or CaCrCaO mixture via lance under neutral slag cover with good success. Difficulties in injecting fluxes without clogging and rippling at a desired flux/gas ratio, and durability of injection lance were resolved in due time to bring forth many injection facilities to flourish for versatile refining operation. Top injection of fluxes from main oxygen lance to BOF was also industrialized as LDAC to promote early slag formation. A new process then emerged which injects oxygen gas and fluxes together through concentric annular tuyere, installed at the bottom of the BOE into steel melt. This process, developed in Germany [Oxygen Bottom Maxhutte (OBM)] and brought into maturity in USA (Q-BOP) and Japan in a large scale operation, became the predecessor of the combined blowing (top and bottom blown) BOF which dominates modern steelmaking."

The petroleum refining industry generates over a million tons of spent catalyst per year, containing valuable metals. Currently, these materials are recycled to smelting furnaces, but the fundamental mechanisms controlling the recovery processes are poorly understood. Furthermore, submerged injection of finely divided materials is potentially a means to obtain high recoveries of pay metals. In this study, a catalyst containing 10% Ni and 1% Co was injected into 45 kg heats of matte. A copper matte was chosen so that the nickel and cobalt recoveries were measurable. It was found that the recovery ranged from 40 to 700Al, increasing with catalyst feed rate, decreasing with catalyst particle size and decreasing with the oxygen content of the carrier gas. A mathematical model was developed to account for the results, and to permit extrapolation to nickel mattes. The industrial implications are discussed.

Industries in general and the mining industry in particular have become more safe than ever before. However, there is a need to increase the search for the causes of mining work-related injuries and to contribute to their reduction through job design, work procedures, and worker training. Mine accident and hazard control has to be practiced in a manner which is consistent with the overall objectives of the mine management, among which are the optimum allocation and effective utilization of the resources. The purposes of this paper are to (i) review the role risk analysis in safety management with references from mining and other industries; (ii) discuss the risk measures appropriate for injury analysis; (iii) present a set of analytical tools to injury experience data in under-ground coal mines; (i v) apply these tools on case study example; (v) discuss the results of the case study; and (vi) amplify the application limitations and the future research needs.

In mid 1978 Inland Cement Industries Ltd. brought on-line their new one million megagram (Mg) per year cement plant at Tilbury Island, Delta, British Columbia. The Plant--Its Philosophy of Design The design of this plant began in 1974, at the beginning of the rapid rise in petroleum costs later referred to as the "energy crisis". The trend in fuel costs was clear, so one of the basic criteria for the selection of process equipment was high thermal efficiency. Throughout the process of selection of materials handling and process equipment, energy consumption was a factor in decisions. A second factor which influenced the design of the plant was its location on navigable water. The plant is designed to make maximum use of this means of transport to minimize transportation costs. All raw materials (and some fuel) are received by water, and a major portion of the cement and clinker is sent out by barge. Extensive modern dock and material handling facilities were provided to accomplish the shipping and receiving functions. A plant meeting stringent environmental regulations was the third major factor which formed the basis for design. To meet this requirement, all storage facilities had to be covered, 53 bag type dust collectors were applied throughout the plant, and materials handling equipment was designed to minimize dust and spillage.

In the manufacturing of steel strip for the automotive sector, the mechanical properties are largely defined by the process conditions in the hot strip mill. In particular the phase transformation, from austenite to ferrite, which takes place during the forced cooling stages on the run out table (ROT) after the finishing mill, governs the microstructure and hence the mechanical properties.In current practice, metallurgical models are used to predict the phase state at each position in the strip. These model predictions are supported by pyrometer measurements along the ROT. Although reliable in the majority of the situations, both measurements and models sometimes have difficulties in providing robust output. In this paper, we present a new type of inline measurement, which directly measures the amount of phase transformed. The instrument is based on a technique known as impedance spectroscopy. As result of a collaboration of different institutes and companies, the equipment is robustly running during several years exclusively in the Hot Strip Mill of Tata Steel in IJmuiden.

"This paper describes the simultaneous sinking and equipping of a 4.9 m diameter concrete-lined shaft to a projected depth of 1660 m. The shaft blast design utilizes the full face method using a parallel hole burn cut. Hydraulic drilling and a totally redesigned Cryderman-type mucking unit were integrated into the four deck sinking stage to provide for drilling, mucking, concreting and shaft steel equipping operations. A safety program was tailored and implemented specifically for this shaft sinking project.IntroductionIn July 1988, Falconbridge Limited commenced development of its Thayer Lindsley exploration site located some four km north of Sudbury on Regional Road 80.The first phase of this project was awarded to J .S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited and the scope of work included the engineering and project management to construct a surface plant capable of supporting a shaft sinking and exploration program for potential future mine development. This initial phase of the project was completed on schedule and under budget on December 23, 1988, and is the subject of an independent paper.In November 1988, J.S. Redpath Limited was awarded the shaft sinking and exploration phase of this project. The scope of work consisted of sinking and equipping a 4.9 m diameter shaft to a depth of 1660 m and carrying out the development and diamond drilling on two levels. This work was scheduled to be completed by November 1991.The T .L. Exploration Project is located toward the eastern end of the south range of the Sudbury basin, north of Sudbury. Figure 1 details the projected mining area and the shaft location on the geological complex. Figure 2 is a section showing the exploration shaft that is located in the Norite. Two levels will be developed from this shaft, on the 1310m and 1588 m levels, to provide access for further geological examination of the ore bodies."

Aberfoyle Limited has developed the Hellyer complex base metal sulphide deposit located in North West Tasmania. As part of exploration and feasibility study, the ore was extensively tested, including trial milling, and was found to be very fine grained and to have poor flotation selectivity. Substantial innovation was required to produce saleable concentrates at acceptable recoveries and costs. Efforts were made to reduce operating costs, to improve metallurgical performance and to improve work organisation. These efforts were pursued both in design and in subsequent plant operation. This work has resulted in a very competitive operation with production costs in the lowest quartile of the industry. Examples of the measures taken are presented and the results are evidenced by improved plant performance since commissioning.

Declining gold grades, mineralogical complexity of ore bodies, increasing input costs, more stringent conditions in the licenses to operate, and uncertain gold price dynamics combine to exert significant ongoing pressure on margins of gold producers. Innovative approaches of extracting the metal from its ores are required to realize value from existing and future assets. In a conventional gold processing plant, size reduction of mined ore to produce floatable or leachable product is a significant cost contributor. A step change in cost reduction will be attained if radically energy efficient grinding approaches can be developed, replacing tumbling mills. In the path towards that goal, some quick wins are possible through waste rejection before grinding, and pre-treatment of mill feed to reduce grinding energy demands. Gold locked in complex mineralizations puts pressure on margins by increasing cost per oz (typically high $/t and low metal recoveries) in the hydrometallurgical steps. Gold miners are primarily price takers. The current narrow range of gold uses (predominantly investment and jewellery) is not an entirely desirable state. Some diversification into commercial uses would potentially be a price stabilizer. In this paper, promising research directions, some not always fully explored in the gold metallurgy research space, are highlighted to stimulate radical innovation for substantial value enhancements. The author strongly believes a shift from a traditionally conservative and incremental innovation approach to a more aggressive one, across all aspects of the gold metallurgy value stream (processes to products), is what the industry needs. Underground contractors in the mining industry must be prepared to take a position at the forefront of innovation of equipment and work methods in order to maintain a competitive advantage over in-house operations and remain relevant. Innovative concepts such as split-feed development jumbos, high capacity trucks and loader guidance systems were implemented by contractors to stay ahead of ‘the pack’. All of these are now common across the industry.The demands of regular participation in competitive tendering coupled with aggressive fleet depreciation, means contractors tend to have more communication and opportunities to work with equipment suppliers than mine owners. Therefore, they are more likely to influence equipment design and product directions. They also have a unique opportunity to assist in trialling new concepts and technologies across a wide variety of operating conditions rather than being restricted to one mine.In addition, as a ‘guest’ on a mine site, mining contractors do not have the luxury of creating the environment for their preferred systems, rather they must have the capacity to adapt their technology to suit the offered environment at a particular mine. This leads to a pursuit of adaptive technologies that can be implemented selectively and seamlessly without excessive disturbance rather than ‘all-of-mine’ systems. These incremental innovations then become available for use across the mining industry where they can add value as ‘bolt-on systems’ to existing operations.Mining contractors, therefore, act as the bellwether for industry practices and equipment. However, in order to maintain their position they must engage industry stakeholders to deliver practical, innovative and cost-effective technologies that add value and result in an improved bottom line for all. The Emeca Pile Splice, an innovative mechanical prestressed concrete pile splice, is the first robotically welded splice to be fabricated in the United States. An analytical and experimental study was conducted to establish the capacity of the standard splice for 12-in. and 14-in. square piles. The study illustrates compliance of the splice with International Building Code (2006) requirements. A case study for a large petroleum tank foundation project in Port Canaveral, FL is presented, demonstrating the efficiency achieved through use of spliced-piles. For the case-study project, single-piece 18-in.-square, 100-ft-long piles were replaced with 12-in.-square, two-piece, spliced piles. As a result, a significant reduction of material, labor, handling, and equipment was documented for the project. Savings realized on the installed pile cost was estimated to be in excess of 30% by the owner.

Innovation plays a critical role in the mining industry as a tool to improve the efficiency of its processes, to reduce costs, but also to meet the increasing social and environmental concerns among communities and authorities. Technological progress has also been crucial to allow the exploitation of new deposits in more complex scenarios: lower ore grades, extreme weather conditions, deeper deposits, harder rock mass, and high-stress environments. This paper discusses the importance of innovation for the mining industry and describes the mechanisms by which it is carried out. It includes a review of the drivers and actors involved and current trends. The digital transformation process that the industry is going through is analyzed, along with other relevant trends that are likely to shape the mining of the future. Additionally, a case study is presented to illustrate the technical and economic implications of developing a disruptive innovation project.

And other technological growth takes place far away from the public view but can have as much of an impact on our daily life as does shopping at Amazon or connecting with friends on social media.At the “THRIVE 2018, Innovations Advancing Mining” conference presented by SME on Sept. 27 at the Sheraton Pittsburgh Hotel at Station Square in Pittsburgh, PA, the focus was on innovation and how it affects the global mining industry.More than 100 people were on hand for the inaugural event, and they were treated to a unique program that focused on the cutting-edge innovations that will carry the mining industry into the future while increasing safety and productivity along the way.2018 SME President Barbara Arnold was the driving force behind the conference and put together the technical program with a focus on innovation through the entire mining life cycle and into the future. Talks ranged from more efficient and safer ways to extract minerals to some of the most advanced end uses of minerals and metals, including the use of 3D printing to create precision parts for machines and humans from advanced metal alloys.“We need to adapt new technologies to our industry and develop additional technologies as we provide materials and metals for infrastructure and energy development in the United States, around the globe, and to the Moon and beyond,” Arnold told Mining Engineering. “Our inaugural THRIVE conference sets the stage for these innovations to be applied and to continue to be developed. The state-of-the-art of mineral mining and metallurgy industry in Russia is characterized by high demand of nonferrous, rare, rare earth metals, and highgrade coal, on the one hand, and by involvement of natural and technogenic minerals with low content of valuable components, fine (nearly emulsion) dissemination of valuable components and close physicochemical and process properties. This calls for high-productive and ecology-friendly technologies for more efficient mineral beneficiation based on intensification of operating and new methods to extract valuable components from rebellious ore and technogenic minerals, relying on the last achievements of basic sciences, combination of dressing and chemico-metallurgical processes and using advanced pyro- and hydrometallurgical technologies. The transition to a new strategy of processing is only possible based on the new technological–mineralogical appraisal of a mineral raw material. Actually, the process mineralogy has a stock of modern high-resolution physical methods for analyzing composition, structure and properties of geomaterials, inclusive of micro- and nano-levels: - Identification of micro- and nano-size noble metals, and natural and induced formations on mineral surface; - Experimental validation of structural phase and chemical transformation of minerals under different energy input; - Justification of choice and mechanism of interaction between flotation agents and noble metals with complex material constitution; - Analysis of structural, phase and chemical transformations of sulfides and rocks under leaching. Thus, process mineralogy is an informational background for a unified theoretical approach to scientific justification of flowsheets of efficient mineral processing. The article gives a brief review of practices that have found application and proved to be of high economic efficiency. Such practices are: X-ray radiometry and photometry separation (Uchalinsky and Gaisky Mining and Processing Integrated Works of ALROSA); selective disintegration (equipment engineered by Mekhanobr-Tekhnika and IPKON RAS); process selectivity enhancement (IPKON RAS, Central Research Institute for Geological Exploration of Nonferrous and Noble Metals, Chinakal Institute of Mining, Siberian Branch RAS, etc.); bacterial gold leaching (Olimpiada MPIW, technologies developed the Central Research Institute for Geological Exploration of Nonferrous and Noble Metals, Nezhdaninsky deposit projects, etc.); combination processing at a mining and metallurgy plant (Norilsk Mining and Metallurgical Company, Yaregsky deposit projects and others); processing of waste: overburden, mill tailings, slag, etc. (Kovdorsky MPIW, Svyatogor JSC, Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company, plants designed by the Central Research Institute for Geological Exploration of Nonferrous and Noble Metals, Mining Institute of Kola Science Center RAS, Research Institute for Chemical Technologies); water conditioning in mineral dressing circuits (ALROSA, equipment by IPKON, etc.); utilization of process water (ALROSA, Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company, Severalmaz JSC and others). Thus, Russia this time has the academic and engineering background for development of efficient energy-saving technologies for comprehensive advanced processing in accordance with the world’s standards, or even higher in terms of a number of the technologies, which has continually been highlighted by participants of recent international congresses on mineral processing.

"As mining has evolved over a century, so are the challenges associated with mining. Mining of complex ore bodies at greater depths is a major challenge requiring high capital and operating costs due to remote locations, high energy costs, water quality and complex environmental issues. In addition, the stakeholder expectations are growing along with challenges associated with highly complex mine permitting processes and changing demographics of mining jurisdictions. The dynamic metals market adds to these challenges impacting the long term development and sustainability of mining projects.These challenges are compelling mining companies to look at various innovations with an integrated approach focusing on meeting the needs of various stakeholders. Mining companies are slowly tapping into some successful concepts that have transformed other industries such as manufacturing, chemical, pharmaceuticals along with oil and gas.This paper provides an overview of various innovations and technology developments in mineral processing that have shaped the current mining industry. A glimpse of the present and future challenges in mining is also presented. An integrated approach to problem solving involving various stakeholders is gaining momentum and this has been reflected in this paper. Various developments that are being pursed in mineral processing focusing on a change in the existing mining paradigm are also presented in this paper.INTRODUCTIONAs mining is evolving, so are the challenges associated with mining. With ever increasing demands on space in urban environments and smaller available footprints, buildings are being designed to increasing heights to meet the need. This case study discusses the increasing challenges in developing projects within urban environments with smaller available footprints and increasing building heights. The One, Canada’s tallest residential building under construction will stand at 85 storeys and is located at one of the most prominent and built up intersections in Toronto, Yonge Street and Bloor Street. This led to many challenges in design and construction of the shoring and foundation work, including the required design capacity of the foundations for the supertall building and proximity of the large diameter drilled shafts to the excavation shoring wall. This case history describes the shoring design option evaluation, performance, and lessons learned to date throughout construction of the building foundations within a small congested site. PROJECT OVERVIEW The One, Canada’s tallest residential building under construction by Mizrahi Developments, is a supertall building that will stand at 85 storeys and 306 m (1005 ft). The first 18 floors will be comprised of retail, restaurants, and hotel with luxury residential condominium units in the tower above. The project is located on the Southwest corner of Yonge Street and Bloor Street, one of the most prominent and built up intersections in Toronto. The L-shaped excavation measures 58 m by 47 m (190 ft to 154 ft) and ranges from 22 m to 28 m (72 ft to 92 ft) in depth with one internal corner projecting 11 m (36 ft) into the site.

The search for modem casting plant concepts today focuses more and more on the harmonisation and optimisation of overall concept lines to obtain a continuous quality control and reduce the cost of production (Figure 1). Fin I As far as continuous casting plant concepts are concerned, this specifically requires an optimal adaptation and flexible operation when converting liquid steel into a directly processable product without any in-between treatment. Continuous casters need to fully satisfy the requirements of both the upstream steelmaking facilities as well as the downstream rolling facilities.

I appreciate the opportunity to tell you something about Kerr-McGee's Galatia Mine in Southern Illinois. This new underground mine was a departure for us since our previous experience had been gained in large surface mines in Wyoming. Although we were new, we did have the corporate experience in the operation of deep uranium and potash mines in New Mexico and Wyoming, and an earlier underground coal mine in Southeast Oklahoma. In arriving at our final design, we evaluated numerous concepts and finally settled on a two seam mine sharing a single shaft and slope. The mine, in turn, would be supported by a heavy media processing plant designed to optimize the yield from either seam. Further, we wished to be able to keep the two seams separate so that we could sell either seam separately or in a blend. Due to the thickness of the coal, the practical area dedicated to the mine provided forty to fifty years operations at the selected mine capacities. It was important, therefore, that our design and selection of hardware and systems provide for long life and low maintenance in order to compete in today's competitive markets.

Many organizations, including the Bureau of Mines, have made intensive studies of the application of leaching methods to relatively small low-grade disseminated deposits of copper ores, containing both oxide and sulphide minerals. One of the principal difficulties has been to obtain a solvent that could be made at a low cost and would effectively dissolve the copper minerals. Another drawback has been the high initial cost of a plant and the refined type of mechanism ordinarily required by standard practice for carrying out the leaching cycle. The Bureau of Mines has attempted to develop a cheap and efficient solvent that would especially meet the requirements of smaller plants. (See Bibliography.) It has been known that dilute ferric sulphate-sulphuric acid solution is an excellent solvent for most copper minerals, such as chalcocite, bornite, and oxidized forms, but not for chalcopyrite and certain silicates. A method of producing this solution from sulphurous products and waste liquors was developed by the bureau and tried successfully on a test-plant scale at the Southwest Experiment Station in cooperation with the department of mining and metallurgy, University of Arizona, Tucson, Ariz. However, this work did not involve the actual leaching of ores with the solutions thus produced or the cyclic use of the iron solutions in the regenerator cell. Except for certain laboratory tests, in which known impurities were added, no data were available to show the effect on regeneration if accumulations of impurities were built up in the leaching circuit.
