Ignitions continue to occur underground, sometimes leading to major explosions. There has been considerable effort in the UK, and more widely in the European Community, to formulate the best ventilation practices and other means of minimising these incidents. Practices and procedures to prevent ignitions are discussed in the light of the risks from current mining methods.

Your personal assessment of the minerals business. Gosh! When I think about what has happened to the minerals industry over the past 27 years that I have been a member of SME! There have been fundamental structural changes in the industry. And I think that SME has been quite successful in coping with these changes as well. There has been a reorientation in how the minerals industry does business. It used to be called rationalization. Today we call it reengineering. In addition, the minerals industry has become more complex and more global. Shareholders have become more vocal and demanding in the management of the business, asking for protection of their shareholders' value. In the 1980s, a fundamental change was precipitated by a merger and acquisition fever in all industries, including the minerals industry. Raiders such as T. Boone Pickens put enormous demands on companies that, in turn, had to spend substantial management time to fend off the raiders. This resulted in a major restructuring of the mining houses. Today, for example, Anaconda, Kennecott and Amax are only historical names.

"The depositional model for major Illinois Basin coalbeds is well documented and defined on a regional scale. The model was a driving force during past exploration for lower sulfur and thicker coal deposits. The most attractive coal reserves were known to lie along the flanks of contemporaneous sandstone filled stream channels and were overlain by thick silty gray shale roof. At various distances away from the channels, the depositional model transitioned to black shale I limestone roof, sulfur content of the coal bed increased, and the coal bed often thinned. Understanding the character of roof rock types associated with this depositional model is essential to predicting ground control factors on both a regional scale, and on resolving roof control problems at the mine-site. Additionally, horizontal stress and overburden depth are significant factors that impact roof rock quality and ground control in Illinois Basin mines.Determining the character of several rock types, and defining the primary horizontal stress direction were crucial to a recent successful project at New Future Mine, located in southern Illinois. An inclined slope was constructed from the Illinois No. 5 Coalbed up to the Illinois No. 6 Coalbed through strata that ranged from extremely weak ""stackrock"" and a weak underclay unit, to a massive sandstone unit. Engineering geology, operations management, and Jennmar technical services personnel teamedup to select and install roof support for each strata transition. The project was completed with no injuries and no roof falls.INTRODUCTIONAbundant published information concerning coal deposition, geographic distribution, quantity, quality, and mining conditions exists for Illinois Basin coal reserves. The State of Illinois, through its State Geological Survey (ISGS), has provided decades of research, record keeping, and service to the coal industry. Other excellent sources of Illinois Basin coal information include the Indiana Geologiq1l Survey and the Kentucky Geological Survey. Past research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) supplemented the work by the geological surveys, especially in the area of horizontal stress and mining hazards. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) continues to produce publications focused on roof control issues common to many coal basins, including the Illinois Basin. Many of the illustrations in this paper originated in ISGS and USBM publications."

THE upper Mississippi Valley zinc-lead area was the first major lead producing section in the United States. The lead ore, found near the surface in crevices, was relatively pure galena that could be smelted directly into lead, at first in log hearth furnaces and later in more efficient blast type furnaces. French Canadian fur traders encouraged the Indians to mine the lead ore and showed them how to smelt it into lead that had a high value for bullets.1 Nicholas Perrot found lead ore on the Mississippi River bluffs near the junction of Wisconsin and Illinois and in 1690 established a trading post on the Wisconsin side of the river opposite the present site of Dubuque, Iowa.2 Shortly after 1720 discovery of Mine La Mott in Missouri diverted considerable attention from the Upper Mississippi area. Mining continued on a desultory basis with operations concentrated in the Galena, Illinois-Dubuque, area. In 1740 at least 20 miners were at work in the Fever River area around Galena and are reported to have shipped 2500 70-lb pigs of lead to Kaskaskia in 1741.3 Julien Dubuque established a mining and smelting operation in 1790 near the city that bears his name 'and was granted sole right to exploit the mining operations on the lands of the Sauk and the Fox Indians. He is reported to have produced 30,000 70-lb pigs of lead in 1805. Following the death of Dubuque in 1810 the Indians refused to let the white miners enter their lands, and little was done on the Iowa side of the river until the Indians were removed by treaty with the United States government in 1832.4 Early mining was entirely for lead but as the crevices were followed down, increasing percentages of zinc sulphide and zinc carbonate were encountered and at first discarded. Later a market became available for the zinc ores, and hand jigging devices were made to separate the lead," the zinc, and the rock or waste materials. The first record of zinc production from -the area is for 1860. Production of zinc passed that of lead before 1900, reached a peak of 64,000 short tons' in 1917, fell off rapidly and continually to about 2000 short tons in 1938, and since 1940 has ranged from 11,000 to 19,000 short tons. Lead has been of considerably less importance since 1900, and at present only about 10 pct as much lead as zinc is produced. Practically all of the zinc ore has come from orebodies that are rather flat and wide with, considerable length as compared to width. Most of the early lead came from the crevice type deposit, but present production is from the predominately flat zinc orebodies. The Graham-Snyder orebody, scene of Eagle Picher operations, is practically all zinc with little or no lead being recovered. Marcasite, present in varying amounts, makes production of finished concentrates by gravity separation impractical. Satisfactory lead and zinc concentrates have been produced since flotation was introduced in the area in 1927. An acid recovery plant was operated for about 20 years after World War I, but it has been dismantled, and no recovery of the iron sulphides in the ores of the district is being made at the present time. In June 1950 there were three companies operating mines and mills, Tri-State Zinc Co., Calumet & Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., and Eagle Picher Mining and Smelting Co. The Vinegar Hill Zinc Co. had completed a shaft at a new orebody and had started to develop the mine which will supply the Cuba City mill. The Cuba Mining Co. was holding the Andrews Mine inactive. The Dodgeville Mining Co. was not operating but was exploring for additional reserves. Several small mines were selling ore to the Eagle Picher mill. A general area map is given in Fig. 1. Allis Mineral Systems' GRATE-CAR agglomeration/induration/reduction process is currently being operated to process ilmenite at Tinfos Titan & Iron KS in Tyssedal, Norway. In this process, balled ilmenite concentrate is fed to a traveling grate where pellets are dried and preheated, using fully oxidized kiln exhaust gas. Hot preheated, semi-indurated pellets are fed directly to a ported kiln where reduction of the ilmenite's iron oxide fraction occurs in the presence of lump coal. The reduced pellet sand coal char are discharged from the kiln to an indirect rotary drum cooler. Cooled pellets and char are screened and magnetically separated prior to their further processing in a downstream smelting operation. The pellets are melted and the titanium dioxide and iron are separated. Operation commenced in late 1986.

Heap leaching should not be chosen for development of a property solely on the basis of paper studies. Management should be made to understand where the risks are in heap leaching, and management should be alerted to the variability of costs in heap leaching, many of which are based upon company philosophy. These concepts are complex, but easily illustrated with guided tours of existing heap leach facilities.

The changes in defects patterns or in element condition index during visual inspection of bridges are primary concerns for inspectors. This paper presents a new approach for change detection of defects in bridges by identifying changes in texture patterns through spectral analysis of digital images. The commonly used method for change detection is image differentiation. This subtraction method requires images to be of same size, scale, and rotation. However, no two images are same in real practices. Thus, image registration is required to align images and to produce change maps. This process is tedious and it is difficult often to achieve a good registered image. But, the change detection task can be readily modeled in frequency domain for texture patterns discrimination and also for quantifying their properties. This paper proposes a novel approach for change detection by transforming digital images into Fourier spectrum. In new coordinate system, 1-D signature functions can be drawn which facilitates easy comparison of textures in different directions. The proposed methodology provides useful tools for comparison of inspection history graphically and quantitatively. In practice, expensive sensors are used to detect subtle change in defect patterns. The proposed method can be used to detect any subtle change in defect patterns using digital images at much lower cost.

The objectives of the system are to increase the profitability of mined coal through a combination of direct and indirect benefits. The system is flexible and can be used in part or in full at a mine as a stand-alone system or as a remote location of a central corporate system.

"Among the first published papers from Prof. Torstein Utigard was work on imaging the aluminum electrolysis process and in-situ measurements of aluminum in cryolite melts. He and Prof. Jim Toguri used an x-ray radiographic technique to measure interfacial tension of aluminum drops. Publications using this equipment for aluminum electrolysis spanned from 1985 to 2006. As well, other methods were used to better understand electrolysis in molten salts, including hot-stage microscopy, direct observations from above the bath and water modeling techniques. For chloride systems (for magnesium and lithium), it is possible to see side-on the electrolysis using a quartz cell. In honour of Prof. Utigard’s contribution to this field, this paper presents a summary of work on visualization of molten salt electrolysis, including work done at the authors’ labs and others around the world. The paper will summarize key findings and their possible impact on molten salt electrolysis."

Iron ore mining is a major source of export income for Australia. However with the decreasing reserves of high-grade, low-phosphorus hematite ore, there is mounting pressure to provide consistent mineralogical ore grade. Enhanced 3D characterisation and modelling are crucial to respond to these exigent requirements. To tackle this problem a revolutionary mine-based, imaging system (based on Visible Near Infrared û Short Wave Infrared reflectance spectroscopy û VNIR-SWIR) has been developed. This innovative, CSIRO-built prototype produces mineralogical maps that will have a major impact on ore grade characterisation. Australian iron ore companies will benefit immensely by pioneering this emerging and unique mining technology. The significance of VNIR-SWIR reflectance spectroscopy is well demonstrated with field portable spectrometers and airborne hyperspectral systems. At the mine-scale level, this newly developed imaging system will allow accurate and objective mineralogical mapping of mine faces and benches with very closely spaced sampling. These spectral mineral maps will improve deposit delineation and bring accurate and objective ore grade characterisation that will minimise drilling and enhance ore recovery. This will in turn lead to cost saving and better long-term block model planning. This system will also improve safety for mine geologists in providing mineralogical information at a distance, avoiding the need for any close contact with the mine face. The mine imaging concept is a logical response to the industry need for automatic and objective tools for sustainable and future mining practices.

Imaging spectroscopy is a relatively new remote sensing tool that provides a rapid method to screen entire mining districts for potential sources of surface acid drainage. An imaging spectrometer known as the Airborne Visible/InfraRed Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) measures light reflected from the surface in 224 spectral channels from 0.4 - 2.5 µm. Spectral data from this instrument were used to evaluate mine waste at the California Gulch Superfluid Site near Leadville, Colorado. Here, the process of pyrite oxidation at the surface produces acidic water that is gradually neutralized as it drains away from mine waste, depositing a central jarosite zone surrounded by a jarosite + goethite zone, in turn surrounded by a goethite zone with a discontinuous hematite rim zone. Leaching tests show that pH is most acidic in the jarosite and jarosite + goethite zones and is near-neutral in the goethite zone. Measurements indicate that metals leach from minerals and amorphous materials in the jarosite + goethite and jarosite zones at concentrations 10 - 50 times higher than from goethite zone minerals. Goethite zones that fully encircle mine waste may indicate some attenuation of leachate metals and thus reduced metal loading to streams. The potential for impact by acidic drainage is highest where streams intersect the jarosite and jarosite + goethite zones. In these areas, metal-rich acidic dace runoff may flow directly into streams. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates (U.S. EPA, 1998) that mineral maps made from AVIRIS data at Leadville have accelerated remediation efforts by two years and saved over $2 million in cleanup costs.

Surface wave imaging is a relatively new seismic technique that generates subsurface depth images without having to drill boreholes into the ground, and is rapidly becoming a standard tool in non-destructive geotechnical characterization. This paper presents a case study of the application of these surface wave techniques to image shallow abandoned mine workings at the Montague Gold Mines district near Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This district has numerous steeply dipping narrow vein workings from historical mining activity, and has actively subsiding and collapsing crown pillars. Due to the rugged conditions at the site and the relative narrowness of the openings (often less than 1 m), a surface seismic system was developed that had improved portability and lateral resolution over other available seismic imaging systems. Seismic surveys were conducted over two sites where independent evidence indicated the presence of shallow mine workings. At one site, a comparative gravity survey was also conducted. The seismic data was processed to generate velocity vs depth images. Overall, the velocity images show vertical zones of zero velocity in the same lateral positions where historical mapping, current subsidence and gravity surveys indicate the presence of steeply dipping workings. Further, the velocity sections are consistent with the thickness of the till cover at each site and the possible weakening of crown pillars at one of the sites.

"Imaging techniques are applied to multi-crystalline silicon wafers and solar cells throughout the production process. Photoluminescence imaging, both band-to-band and defect-band, is used to characterize defects and wafer quality at all process steps. These steps include bricks sawn from ingots, wafer sawing, cleaning and texturing, emitter diffusion, edge isolation and glass removal, anti-reflective coating/passivation, and metallization of finished cells. Bricks, wafers, and cells can be imaged at a rate commensurate with in-line measurement, giving spatial information to characterize quality and defect content. Photoluminescence images on silicon bricks can be correlated to lifetime measured by photoconductive decay and could be used for high-resolution characterization of material before wafers are cut. The defect areas in as-cut wafers are compared to imaging results from electroluminescence and lock-in thermography, and cell parameters of near-neighbor finished cells, showing correlations to efficiency, open-circuit voltage, and short-circuit current.IntroductionImaging techniques can rapidly characterize material quality and defect density. Photoluminescence (PL) imaging can be applied to silicon from the brick level to all wafer process steps [1-8]. At the brick level, material thickness allows for measurement and correlation to lifetime where surface recombination effects are minimized [6, 7]. At the as-cut wafer level where thin unpassivated wafers prevent accurate lifetime assessment due to surfaces, defects can still be categorized and quantified to predict finished cell performance [3-5]. Defect regions can be identified by recombination-limited band-to-band PL or by defect-band emission [9-12]."

"Conceptual imitative dynamic model of developing enterprises for medium and long-term period permitting to ensure coordination of interests of the enterprise and territorial environmental authorities has been developed to enable the process of the prognostication and management of a concentrating mill development, in which a symbol language and terminology familiar to the manager of the company are applied. An algorithm of practical application of this model of company development was elaborated as well as a general methodological approach to the prognostication of the development and procedures of its implementation. The general methodological approach to the implementation of the model has been defined. Within the framework of system approach, a concentrating mill is considered as a subsystem of an ore mining and processing company or a mining and smelting one. A concentrating technology is considered in dynamics, its change is determined by the task of making the company operation profitable. Technological indicators are secondary relative to financial and economical indexes. At the same time, technological and economical indexes are determined in their interrelation with ecological parameters. The elaborated model allows us to estimate all necessary economic, financial and technological indexes in their interrelation both for the company as a whole and as separately redistributed estimating the basic prognostication documents - accounting balance-sheet, profit and loss report, as well as the funds flow statement. When varying the managing parameters, all necessary result-producing financial and economical indexes are estimated and a need in and a possibility of an external funding by various sources are considered.The implementation of the model enables one to determine the required scale of production capacity, as well as the amount of raw-material resources needed. In case of shortages of the latter, there should be considered various scenarios of the production capacity enhancement or the possibility of commissioning of new sites or deposits and introduction of improved technologies."

Blasting in the heart of the historic Byward Market District of Canada’s capital, Ottawa, presents a unique set of challenges. The obvious difficulties arising on projects requiring blasting within 3 m (10 ft) of 125 year old buildings in various states of disrepair have been encountered and successfully dealt with countless times before. The complexities increase exponentially when tenuous property boundaries, unknown structural details, litigious histories and the need for encroachment agreements lead to individuals with competing interests all able to impact the same operation. Blasting on three projects in the Market was started in early 2005 after months of negotiation. Ultimately, the potential for the projects to proceed hinged on the ability to successfully disseminate blast data to the various stakeholders. As part of the agreements drawn up, property owners demanded immediate notification of the measured vibration levels with contract provisions including clauses such that any exceedance of the USBM criteria immediately triggered project shut down and complete blasting program redesign, and approval by all parties. With stakeholders located in various cities and, in some instances, on various continents, a conventional attended monitoring strategy would not satisfy the requirements. In response to the critical reporting need, Explotech Engineering Ltd. installed unattended monitoring stations around the sites, all incorporating wireless telemetry. After each blast, data was automatically transferred from the monitoring stations to a web-linked server via the wireless network, where it was immediately available to project stakeholders through a password protected website. The solution required a unique blend of data acquisition, telemetry, database, and security technologies, all married to produce a reliable system that was easy to maintain and use. While these types of systems were originally developed for use as permanent monitoring networks in operating mines and quarries, monitoring professionals are increasingly benefiting from the technology on temporary building projects that have typically been the realm of attended monitoring strategies. Globally, this has emerged as a solution to provide more timely access to data for stakeholders, and to minimize the legal exposure from multiple violations of vibration limits. As this trend is likely to continue, the regulated vibration control industry is likely to see a continued shift in technology development to leverage wireless networks and the Internet to continue to improve data transfer, archiving and distribution.

"Mineworkers are routinely tasked with making critically important decisions about whether or not a hazard presents an imminent danger. Researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health collected formative data to investigate mine safety professional perspectives on workplace examinations, which revealed a potential gap in how mineworkers are assessing risk. During interviews, participants revealed not having a systematic methodology for mineworkers to use to determine if a hazard is considered imminent danger. In this paper, we identify and describe three distinct categories of imminent danger complexity and discuss potential steps that could lead to improved identification of imminent danger situations. Finally, we identify potential practices to incorporate into risk management efforts, including feedback, communication and specialized training, to increase awareness of imminent danger situations. Sporosarcina ureae was able to grow in the presence of tip to 10-ppm L-asparagine complexed gold. However, 10 ppm Au3+ was found to be highly toxic to Sporosarcina ureae, killing 109 bacteria/mL within a few seconds. To compare the effects of these responses on gold mobility, an in vitro bacterial biofilm model was developed to examine the interaction be¬tween Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold or L-asparagine gold complexes in gravity fed columns. The immobilization of ionic gold was between 80% and 90% over a period of one week. But, as the available cellular reactive sites became saturated, immobilization decreased to 14% within two weeks. In the L¬asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization in the cytoplasm occurred at a high rate (80% to 90%) throughout the experi¬ment, with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae. The bacterial immobilization and detoxification of L-asparagine¬complexed ionic gold was associated with a low molecular weight, i.e, <5,000 dalton (atomic mass unit), intracellular protein fraction. This peptide-complexed gold would allow for the continued biogeochemical cycling of gold under ambient (<100°C) surface or near-surface conditions.

Waste disposals are needed for safe deposition of different kinds of materials which can not be used as secondary raw materials. Often high contents of heavy metals must be bonded tightly to cristalline compounds to protect the environment from contamination. Therefore it is important. to find minerals which are capable to incorporate different heavy metals and protect the ground water. The power of resistance against leaching out effects of highly water-soluble salts can be increased. Mineral groups of metal hydroxy salts, ettringites, apatites, sodalites and calciumchlorosilicates and their hydrates are recommended for their formation in mineral reservoirs. Different wastes as red mud, gasification ash, garbage combustion ash and fluidized bed ashes were included in this study. The formation of different new compounds and their properties were determined.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the immobilization as a host for metallic pollutants (Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) by ettringite phase. Ettringite phase is produced through hydration reaction of calcium aluminate with gypsum. From the XRD patterns, it is known that the distance between spaces in 010 planes in ettringite crystal increase with an increase of ionic radius of heavy metal except Pb; no big difference is shown. For this reason, the d-value of 010 planes in ettringite crystal increased with the substitution of Cr, Cu and Zn having a big Al ironic radius. But in case of Pb, because the substitution occurred at calcium site, it does not influence to increase d-value of 010 planes.
