"The Poplar Mountain gold occurrence in western New Brunswick is hosted in the Poplar Mountain volcanic complex (PMVC), which is located along the southern segment of the regional Woodstock fault zone. The PMVC consists of three principal units including, in ascending order, a porphyritic felsic volcanic unit, a volcaniclastic unit, and a mafic volcanic unit. U-Pb dating of zircon indicates that the age of the volcanic rocks is younger than 459 ± 3 Ma, and 40Ar/39Ar dating of mineralization-associated sericite indicates that the age of mineralization is 411 ± 3.7 Ma. Gold-mineralized zones occur in all the lithologic units but mainly in the porphyritic felsic volcanic unit. Gold zones are not controlled by individual faults but are characterized by high-density brittle fracturing, thin carbonate-quartz veining, and intensive ankerite-sericite alteration, superimposed on an earlier chlorite-calcite- quartz alteration. Gold is associated with arsenopyrite, which mostly occurs as disseminations in the host rocks, and to a lesser extent with quartz-carbonate-sericite veins and quartz-cemented breccias.Geochemical data indicate that mineralization-associated alteration is characterized by enrichment of K, Rb, Cs, Ca, Sr, Ba, As, Sb, W, C, and S. Fluid inclusion data indicate that the mineralizing fluids are composed of H2O, salts, and CO2 with variable amounts of N2 and CH4; salinities range from 2.3 to 10.6 eq. wt.% NaCl, but mainly from 2.3 to 5.6 eq. wt.% NaCl, and homogenization temperatures lie mainly between 220° and 270°C. Fluid pressures at the site of mineralization are estimated to have been 770 to 1200 bars, corresponding to a depth of 2.9 to 4.6 km at lithostatic pressure. The d18OSMOW and d13CPDB values of mineralization-related ankerite range from +14.5‰ to +16.5‰, and -6.8‰ to -8.3‰, respectively. The d18O values of the ore-forming fluids are estimated to be 6.4‰ to 8.3‰ at a temperature of 250°C. These carbon and oxygen isotope data fall in the field of magmatic fluids and in part the field of metamorphic fluids.Considering the geological setting of the region, abundant granitic intrusions, the similarity between the age of mineralization (411 ± 3.7 Ma) and the nearby Pokiok batholith (402-415 Ma), and the enrichment of granophile elements in mineralization-related alteration, the ore-forming fluids were probably derived from a granitic intrusion underneath the PMVC. These fluids were focused along structures related to the Woodstock fault. The Poplar Mountain gold occurrence might be compared to some granitic intrusion-related gold systems based on the geochemical data presented herein. "R.E. Janes Gravel Co. is an aggregates producer is located along a paleo-channel of the Ogallala formation (locally known as the Slaton Channel) approximately 48.3 km (30 miles) southeast of Lubbock, TX. In an attempt to beneficiate the 25.4-mm (1-in.) concrete aggregate product, a log washer was installed in the processing line to liberate and remove fines (clay) from the finished product. The introduction of this extra cleaning step increased fines in the finished product, exacerbating the original problem. Several other processing options were investigated before a geological analysis was undertaken to try and define the lithology of the formation and formation characteristics in an attempt to alleviate this problem.Initial assessmentsThe mined resources are mid-Miocene to early Pliocene (16-4 mya) in age and is the eastern exposure of the Ogallala formation of the Southern High Plains escarpment. The Ogallala formation consists of coarse-grained alluvial sediments in paleovalley channel ways from the Rocky Mountains with fine Aeolian and paleosol deposition on the uplands across the High Plains region of the United States. Locally, these Rocky Mountain sediments from New Mexico were transported and deposited in a paleochannel that is approximately 0.805 km (0.5 miles) wide and 15.25 to 18.3 m (50 to 60 ft) in depth. As this channel cut across the Southern High Plains it eroded local rock sources of Late Cretaceous limestones and Triassic sandstones and mudstones incorporating them into the younger Ogallala depositional sequence.Depositional historyThe channel currently being mined is a nontypical Ogallala deposit. The Ogallala in the panhandle of Texas is divided into two units, the Couch and the Bridwell. The Couch is the older of the two and exhibits alluvial sedimentation of thicker and larger gravel (up to 76.2 mm or 3 in.) deposits fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick friable caliche deposits. The Bridwell overlies the Couch and is characterized by alluvial sedimentation, a distinctive red tint and smaller gravel components (typically no larger than 25.4 mm or 1 in.) fining upward to Aeolian sedimentation and thick, well-indurated caliche cap. The Slaton Channel divides these two units and shares lithologic components of both, yet is lithologically distinct due to its Cretaceous Age limestone gravels that can be < 3.66 m (12 ft) in size. Caliche/calcrete is a calcareous (CaCO3) deposit that forms in the B horizon of soils as a rain water leachate of CaCO3 from the upper A horizon."

"The Corridor Sands deposit is situated approximately 190 km north east of Maputo, Mozambique adjacent to the paleo-mouth of the Limpopo River. This deposit is one of the worldÆs largest known economically viable resource of titanium, accounting for approximately one third of the global resource. As part of the pre-feasibility and feasibility study for development of the Corridor Sands project, various geological and geotechnical investigations were undertaken, selected results of which are presented in this paper. These investigations have enabled a detailed understanding of the material characteristics of the orebody as well as the tailings materials, such as the fines, to be developed. These material characteristics have had a significant impact on the selection of the mining and disposal methods currently being implemented."

INTRODUCTION During the normal course of a mining project, a feasibility study will be prepared that addresses all the aspects of the project including geology and mineral inventories, mining and geo- technical, metallurgical processing, infrastructure, environmental considerations and economic analyses. These studies are prepared for various reasons. Occasionally, a feasibility study will be prepared solely for use within a company as justification for development expenditures, however, these documents are frequently submitted outside the company either to raise funds from financial institutions or from public financing on one of the various securities exchanges. Mineral industry consultants are often called upon to participate in the preparation of feasibility studies or to conduct an independent audit and review of an internally prepared study. As the recoverable mineral resources form the foundation upon which the balance of a feasibility study is based, including the economic analysis of the project, the resource aspect of the study is examined very carefully by financial and securities organizations. The balance of this discussion is directed toward the various geological and resource estimation aspects of feasibility studies that experience has shown to be of particular importance. Much of this discussion will be directed toward open pit gold operations, although the principles are applicable to any type of deposit. 2.0 GEOLOGIC RESPONSIBILITIES IN FEASIBILITY STUDIES The principal geological effort in the preparation of a feasibility study is generally dedicated to the following areas: - Preparation of Geologic Reserve/Resource Estimates - Condemnation of Sites for Facilities, Access Roads, Leach Pads, Waste Dumps and Tailings Disposal - Collection of Geotechnical Data - Provision of Mineralogical and Petrological Data Pertinent to Metallurgical Processing - Selection of Appropriate Bulk Sampling Sites for Collection of Metallurgical Samples Each of these items will be addressed in detail in the following sections. 3.0 RESERVE/RESOURCE ESTIMATION An ore reserve estimate consists of the determination of a volume, or tonnage, and a grade for the deposit. There are numerous cases in the mining industry of projects that have experienced severe difficulties when operational ore grade, tonnage or metallurgical amenability have proven to be deficient compared to predicted estimates. An error in estimation of tonnage generally leads to more long term problems affecting mine life and production schedules. However, a significant error in the estimation of grade, particularly if mined grade is lower than anticipated, can have an immediate, and often disastrous, effect upon a project. The discovery of nickel sulphide deposits at Kambalda in 1966 heralded the development of ò an industry with a capital value of over $1.5 billion producing about 10% of the western world&apos;s nickel. ò an unprecedented exploration boom in which over $200 mil- lion was expended in 10 years in the search for nickel deposits. ò a major new class of nickel deposits stimulating exploration for similar deposits overseas. and rapidly propelled a struggling small mining and exploration company to become one of Australia&apos;s corporate giants, provid- ing a much-needed stimulus to economic activity in a region suffering from a severe downturn in its principal industry, gold mining. Production of nickel in Western Australia commenced at Kam- balda in 1967 and grew rapidly to a rate of over 30,000 t of con- tained nickel per annum in 1970, 40,000 t in 1973 and 50,000 t in 1975. Early production was aided by a shortage of nickel on the world market due to disruption of supply from the major Canadian producers, resulting in high free market prices for the metal. Since these early years, the industry has experienced a number of cycles of indifferent health due principally to market developments overseas, although the level of production of nickel in Western Australia remained fairly consistent. The two most serious of these, in 1977-8 and 1985-6, forced the closure of a number of mines. Current nickel prices are allowing remaining producers to enjoy a measure of relative prosperity, although there is little general speculation that this will be long-lived. Nickel deposits discovered in the exploration boom were almost exclusively related to ultramafic rocks. Volcanic peridotite (komatiite)-associated deposits, exemplified by the Kambalda ore- bodies, were the targets of initial exploration which was concen- trated on ultramafic sequences near lower stratigraphic contacts with underlying mafic rocks. Subsequently, discoveries made in coarse-grained dunites in interpreted intrusive settings broadened the search parameters.

Computer applications in the past five to seven years have become a typical and necessary practice in most modern geological offices. Manual calculations, interpretations and plotting of data can be, at times, quite tedious, inefficient and lacking in ac- curacy. The introduction of geostatistical and geological software can eliminate these problems. Computer applications in the uranium industry are not new; however, they are constantly being developed. A variety of soft- ware programs are available. Generally, these programs support most geological and geostatiscal applications in uranium mines. The Rabbit Lake Operation - Eagle Point mine in Northern Saskatchewan is a high grade mine, as one such case. Computer applications at the Eagle Point mine have been a mainstay in the geology department, since the mine&apos;s collaring in 1991. This paper presents a discussion on descriptions of programs, operations and applications of computers. It also explains and de- scribes the radiometric equipment used at Eagle Point. This pa- per will demonstrate how, by using computer systems, mine site information flows reliably with the involvement of computers.

Particularly, attention has been given to those associated with the geology of the polluted site. Areas which require further research have been addressed and indicate that geologists will play a key role, alongside microbial ecologists and engineers, in designing and implementing bioremediation strategies.

This review paper presents an integrated and practical insight to blasting geology and its importance. This approach involves developing blasting objective up front and implementing geology specific blast designs. The author refers to this approach as ‘starting at both ends’. There are many human-imposed controls on blasting operations, such as: safety, security, legislative, company standards, heritage, and environmental constraints. Thus it is possible for some operators to lose sight of the controls imposed by nature. This paper demonstrates how site geology controls or influences many aspects of the rock breaking processes and how a focus on this aspect has potential to add considerable value to mining operations. It is obvious that mining companies concentrate their efforts on economic/ore geology (good rock geology). However it is the author’s experience that they also concentrate on engineering geology (bad rock geology) only when forced to do so by the ground conditions, but seem to run out of puff before they apply blasting geology (big rock geology). This paper contains five main sections. In the first section, the impact of geological controls on blasthole drilling is briefly discussed in terms of drill selection, penetration rates, bit wear, blasthole stability, blasthole deviation, and health precautions. In the second section the geological controls on aspects of geometric design are reviewed. These include: hazardous minerals, valuable minerals, selection of the blasting techniques, geological structures, blasting direction, and blasting geometry. Section three overlaps with the geometric design section and deals with aspects related to explosives. Topics addressed include selecting the explosive type based on geology, distribution of explosive charge in space and time, explosive performance, and the rock response to explosive loading. In the fourth section, examples are given of the operational complexity needed to implement a blast to cater for difficult bench geologies, environment constraints, past mining (voids) and need for a high degree of quality control. Section five demonstrates geological controls on blast results. Blasting results include the muck pile characteristics, downstream handling and processing, damage to the remaining rock, and blasting emissions.

This article presents a series of guidelines by which the geologist can evaluate the likelihood of surface faulting and its probable extent at any given site in Southern California and Nevada. The information is intended primarily for geologists concerned with establishing design criteria for proposed nuclear plants. The geologic problems involved in the location of a nuclear power plant are fundamentally no different from those for other types of installations. They fall into four main categories: foundation stability, landslides and slope stability, shaking due to earthquakes, and surface faulting. For problems in the first three categories the foundation engineer, the geologist, and the seismologist can provide criteria for plant location and design, and these problems can generally be economically handled by appropriate design measures for a project of the magnitude of a nuclear plant. However, problems in the last category — surface faulting — are more difficult to handle and require a unique evaluation. Accordingly, this paper will deal primarily with the problem of establishing design criteria for surface faulting, particularly as it affects nuclear facilities. A nuclear reactor is a power source that for greater safety is contained in a heavy, air-tight structure, just as gas, oil, water, and other power sources must be contained. Surface faulting is significant in that it may reduce the integrity of the containment by affecting critical exterior piping or by breaching of the containment. A similar significance exists relative to dams or tanks for the storage of water, gas, or oil, except that in these latter examples the breaching of the container automatically releases the fluids to do their damage. This is not necessarily the case with the rupture of a reactor containment structure because the function of the containment is totally protective, i.e., it is necessary only in the event that radioactive products are released from the reactor, and there are many other safeguards to pre- vent this release even if the containment is ruptured. At the present time, nuclear power plants must be located near large sources of water for cooling the steam generated. The construction of an industrial facility of any kind on the coast line is esthetically distasteful to most people since, unfortunately, there is not enough coast to fulfill all the needs and all the desires of all the people. In most cases where industrial facilities encroach on the lives of citizens, there is no mechanism other than zoning laws by which a person can effectively protest. But in the case of a nuclear facility, the public hearing required by the Atomic Energy Commission provides a forum for dissent, as in recent case histories, and the question of safety provides objectors with a weapon for fighting the construction of the plant. The nature of a public hearing for a nuclear plant is such that the prospective owner and operator must prove that there is no undue hazard, whereas the objectors need only demonstrate that there is a reasonable doubt. It is in this situation that geology becomes the Achilles Heel of nuclear power plant location. For his investigation, the geologist has natural exposures of rock at the ground surface and a limited number of trenches and drill holes to give him a fairly complete picture of the distribution of the various rock types. From the surficial data, he must infer three more dimensions — depth below the surface, past time, and future time. Unlike many problems faced by engineers, the geologist has only this one set of data from which to reach a conclusion — he is unable to reproduce the natural sequence of events in order to obtain another set of data for comparison. Hence, by the very deductive nature of a geologic conclusion, it is difficult to prove a geologic conclusion beyond a reasonable doubt even to other geologists — and perhaps one should say especially to other geologists because the experience and background of a geologist will strongly influence his conclusion, and no two geologists have exactly the same experience and training. The engineer and the public official would like the geologist to conclude that faulting cannot occur at a given site or to assign a numerical value to the probability of its occurrence — but no responsible geologist can do either of these things. Geological engineering expanded its role and significance during 1966 in the areas of construction, raw materials exploration and inventory, water supply and pollution, mechanical properties of earth material and regional environmental planning. Efforts varied immensely in scope and magnitude, in simplicity, difficulty and importance. Observations, measurements, and analysis encompassed both simple and sophisticated procedures. CONSTRUCTION Activities in construction ranged from preliminary to detailed evaluations of sites, development of preventative measures and designing corrective measures following construction failures. Most investigations concerned dam sites, highway locations and slope stability, building sites, tunnels and underground storage facilities.

"Abstract -The East Bull Lake gabbro-anorthosite intrusion is one of several Early Proterozoic layered matie intrusions occurring along the Southern Province - Superior Province boundary in the Elliot Lake - Sudbury region, Ontario. The base of the East Bull Lake intrusion comprises abundant plagioclase cumulates (Leucogabbronorite Zone) hosting two distinct styles of sulfide mineralization: (1) disseminated magmatic sulfides, and (2) disseminated to massive, structurally controlled sulfides. Both types of mineralization are enriched in Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni. The host rocks to the sulfide mineralization display a range of interesting features including nodular textures, dendritic­ pegmatitic matie pods, inclusion-rich zones (pyroxenite, anorthosite and granitic inclusions) and mag­ matie breccias. Disseminated chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pentlandite occur in concentrations of up to lOOJo within erratically distributed gossan pods near the base of the intrusion. The sulfides were originally precipitated from intercumulus liquids, but were subsequently recrystallized and locally remobilized along fractures during the major period of metamorphism and deformation that af­ fected the East Bull Lake intrusion. The base- and precious-metal tenor of the structurally controlled sulfides can be explained by extensive remobilization and reconcentration of the pre-existing magmatic sulfides in the vicinity of a major shear zone. Both styles of sulfide mineralization locally contain ppm abundances of POE + Au and are generally Pd- and Cu-rich, although both display large variations in Pd :Pt and Cu:Ni ratios. The magmatic sulfides are more strongly enriched in POE and contain up to 1470 ppm Pd in 100% sulfide. Severa! factors, including source characteristics, magmatic processes (crustal assimilation, fractional crystallization) and post-magmatic inter­ action with hydrous fluid, have influenced the present distribution of POE, Cu and Ni in the East Bull Lake intrusion .The magmatic sulfide occurrences from the East Bull Lake intrusion compare favorably with marginal-type deposits from rift-related intrusions (Noril&apos;sk-Talnakh region, Siberia; Duluth Com­ plex, U.S.A.) in terrns of their distribution, but are most similar to reef-type POE deposits with respect to their base- and precious-metal geochemistry. The combination of high POE tenors and large tonnages that is observed for the POE-Cu-Ni mineralization from the East Bull Lake intrusion suggests that a good potential exists for the presence of economie concentrations of Pd, Pt, Au, Cu and Ni in the intrusion. On a global scale, the East Bull Lake intrusion is part of a suite of Early Proterozoic plutons, many of which contain significant volumes of stratiform and/or marginal­ type POE-Cu-Ni mineralization. The East Bull Lake intrusion is also one of the oldest mineralized intrusions derived from a sub-Superior Province mantle source region that has given rise to several significant magmatic POE-Cu-Ni deposits during the period 2.5 Ga to 1.1 Ga."

Weighted moving-average contour maps have been constructed for molybdenum, copper and zinc using 7850 stream-sediment samples from 5430 square miles (14,063 sq. kms) of south-central British Columbia. Regional trends for molybdenum and zinc are northeast, north and northwest and those for copper are north and northwest. These trends are interrupted by zones markedly low in metals . The metal-rich trends cross rocks of different lithology and age and thus appear to be structurally controlled. The northeast trend may have exerted control on metal distribution at two different times.

Drill and blast (D&amp;B) is one of the most important production operations in open pit mining. The resulting fragmentation of the D&amp;B reflects in the downstream unit operation. Good fragmentation of the ore will minimise the cost of loading, hauling and crushing. The understanding of the geological model integrated with a software system for bench face surveying and planning of blast layouts based on three-dimensional images can help to achieve the fragmentation goals of the mine operation. A case study integrating these tools was carried out in a large iron mine in Brazil. The iron ore in the study area consists of hard and friable itabirites. More than three different ore types may occur on the same bench. Under these conditions, data integration becomes necessary to improve the results of blasting. A blasting plan was based on the generated geological model. The methodology helps understanding the factors that can interfere in the fragmentation process, allowing defining actions that can improve the blast design in those places that fragmentation wasn’t achieved. This condition is important for a continuous improvement of the drilling and blasting operation. In comparison with the previous blasting carried out at Itabira mine, which did not take into account the geological model, substantial improvements in fragmentation were observed, eliminating the need for secondary blasting.CITATION:Schaarsdmit, R, Pablos, I, Koppe, J C, Gabriel, E, Gomes, A and Crispim, P, 2015. Production of oic at BHP Minerals Pty Ltd&apos;s Cannington Mine commenced in May 1997. The initial sloping blocks at the [nine are located in the upper part of the Footwall Lead lode, and the Hangingwall Lead and Glenholme Breccia lodes. This paper discusses the geological investigations, interpretation and modelling that was undertaken for the Footwall Lead lode production block at Cannington Mine, as well as providing a basic geological introduction to the Cannington deposit.

An area of about 7,000 square miles within the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province is underlain chiefly by granitic gneisses. There are, however, some exposures of mafic rocks which warrant further investigation, and some attractive structures, particularly basins, which deserve additional economic consideration. T HIS paper describes in a very general fashion the economic and geological features of an area of about 7,000 square miles on the north shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the eastern part of the Grenville Sub-province (Figure 1). The scarcity of published geological data on this part of the Cana-dian Shield (DePuyjalon, 1899 and Longley, 1944) justifies the presentation of these tentative results. It should be appreciated, however, that the information which follows was acquired in a rapid reconnaissance designed specifically to out-line what might be interpreted as favourable geological environments for the occurrence of economic minerals, rather than to produce an authoritative analysis of the geological history of the region.

"The Agnew nickel deposit occurs in a major linear greenstone belt in the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Province of Western Australia, and has been subjected to mid-amphibolite facies nietamorphism of dynamic style. The largest dunitic ultramafic body in the Perseverance Block is host to the bulk of the nickel mineralization. The Perseverance Ultramafic is mineralogically zoned and has an embayed western margin against a mixed metasedimentarv-metavolcanic wallrock sequence.Three categories of nickel sulphide mineralization are concentrated on this western margin at the thickest part of the ultramafic exposure. Massive sulphides characteristically occur as contact mineralization, internal mineralization and as remobilized concentrations in vein form structures. Disseminated ore constitutes the largest volume of mineralized materials in the deposit and occurs in three separate shoots in en-echelon relation. Weakly mineralized 'cloud sulphide' zones surround and envelop the shoots and persist much further along strike. In the upper mine levels the shoots are truncated by a shear or crush zone, which inhibits geological knowledge to the south but marks a major fundamental structural break.Most of the ore types have suffered supergene alteration and there is a complex variable distribution of the mineralogical facies. The ore types have been metamorphically retextured, but the oreshoots can be characterized by their Ni tenor and some chemical ratios. S/Se values, PGF. and precious metal values are distinctly different from those of other nickel sulphide ores extracted.Despite intense structural and metamorphic modification of the mineralizations, some features support an original magmatic derivation for the sulphides. These include the localization of massive sulphide ore types on one marginal contact within an emhayment structure, the general distribution of disseminated mineralizations located immediately above the massive sulphides and the Ni/Cu, Ni/Co, Fe/Ni ratios of the oreshoots being similar to those of deposits that typify the intrusive dunite- associated class of nickel sulphide deposit. Varying S/Ni ratios between different shoots suggest a revision of the single magmatic intrusion model in favour of a changing composition between successive magmatic episodes."

Scandium is an important industrial metal for which demand is projected to increase in the future. Although many Sc deposits are secondary, Sc is scavenged by clinopyroxene during fractional crystallization of primary, mafic-ultramafic magmas. Sc may thus occur in sub-economic concentrations in mafic-ultramafic intrusions. In this work, we present new data on the concentration of Sc in the Bushveld Complex (BC) of South Africa. The eastern and western limbs of the BC are considered to be largely pristine, primary magmatic deposits, whereas the northern limb shows evidence of largescale, localized crustal contamination. Samples from the primary magmatic cumulates of the eastern limb, from the mineralized Flatreef of the northern limb, and from the crustal-contaminated Footwall Assimilation Zone (FAZ) of the Flatreef were analysed for Sc. Despite the FAZ containing abundant clinopyroxene, interpreted to have recrystallized from the original cumulates in the presence of melted sedimentary rocks, no significant differences are seen in the concentration of Sc compared to other cumulate rocks of the BC containing less-abundant clinopyroxene. The concentration of Sc in the analysed samples is mainly controlled by mineralogy, with anorthosites, chromitites, and harzburgites containing under 20 ppm, and norites and pyroxenites containing 20–40 ppm. The parapyroxenites of the FAZ are less enriched in Sc than expected, suggesting that Sc may have been lost during alteration and recrystallization.

Paper presented at the conference Economic geology in Europe and beyond II, models for mineral deposits in sedimentary basins, held in Keyworth, UK, 13-14 April 1994. The region includes the Deveci siderite/goethite deposit and the Hasancelebi, Karakuz and Kuluncak magnetite/goethite deposits; Deveci is the only mine in operation. The area consists of a serpentine-gabbro complex overlain by a volcano-sedimentary sequence hosting the iron ores. At least three generations of hydrothermal alteration have affected all rock types except the latest trachytic dykes. The Deveci deposits occur in a pyroclastic volcano-sedimentary sequence with shales and carbonates equivalent to the main mafic sequence, whereas the other three deposits formed contemporaneously with the intrusion of trachytic dykes. The deposits are of the volcanic-exhalative type, with syngenetic siderite in pillow lavas or stratiform layers the primary and main Fe-bearing mineral. In the west hydrothermal alteration has replaced siderite in pillow lavas with magnetite or has remobilised sideritic iron into magnetite veins

"Abstract- The NERCO Con Mine is situated in the amphibolite facies aureole of the Western Plutonic Complex overprinting the Yellowknife Greenstone Belt. Metamorphic grade of the upright monoclinal basaltic succession decreases from hornblende-amphibolite facies along the border of the batholith to greenschist facies. Metamorphic isograds, subparalleling the faulted margin of the batholith, transect volcanic stratigraphy and coincide with major gold­ bearing shears.Gold mineralization is confined to north-striking, west-dipping shear zones where hanging­ wall amphibolite facies mineral assemblages retrogress to chlorite-carbonate-sericite-sulfide bearing schists hosting multiple generations of quartz-ankerite veins. The gold-producing portions of the Con and Campbell Shears occur where these structures transect an east trending thermal corridor. The corridor is defined by granitic plugs and a number of related breccia bodies, that can be traced outwards from the batholith across the greenstone belt.Prograde reactions of greenstone during amphibolitization effectively liberate fluids that partition metals. With retrograde reactions at shear zones, gold is precipitated with quartz due to the destabilization of sulfide and arsenic complexes. The coupling of regional prograde metamorphic and restricted retrograde metasomatic overprints suggest mineralization is temporally related to emplacement of the Western Plutonic Complex. Economic gold concentrations within the intrusive corridor indicates enhanced metamorphic overprint of hornfelsed greenstones enveloping satellite intru sives peripheral to the main batholith."

Abstract - The West Meliadine area is underlain by structurally interleaved panels of mafic and minor ultramafic metavolcanic rocks and metasedimentary rocks that occur along the northern margin of the Neoarchean Rankin Inlet greenstone belt. Three structural and metamorphic domains are recognized: (1) the easterly Wesmeg domain; (2) the central Barracuda-Ridge domain; and (3) the westerly Peter Lake domain. The Wesmeg domain is characterized by a series of southeast-trending, north-dipping, foliation-parallel panels of greenschist facies mafic metavolcanic and metasedimentary rocks. The Barracuda-Ridge domain is comprised of greenschist to amphibolite facies mafic metavolcanic rocks that define an east-northeast-trending structural grain. The Peter Lake domain consists of amphibolite facies mafic metavolcanic rocks and minor metasedimentary rocks intruded by a monzonite pluton. West Meliadine hosts the economically significant Wesmeg gold deposits, as well as other important gold showings across the Barracuda-Ridge and Peter Lake domains. The geological setting of the Wesmeg gold deposits resembles that of a break or fault zone. The Pyke Break is a major geophysical discontinuity (>65-km strike length) and is the first-order structural control on gold mineralization at West Meliadine. It is several kilometers wide and characterized by polyphase deformation and shear zone development accompanied by lode-gold mineralization. In general, gold concentration is related to quartz and iron-carbonate veining, iron sulfides (mainly arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite), and accompanying silicate alteration minerals that overprint favorable chemical and structural traps late in the history of deformation.
