This paper outlines the results of a relationship developed during the design and construction of the foundations for the Gallery Towers project in Melbourne. Both the builder and the piling contractor were determined to arrive at a satisfactory foundation solution to the problems encountered at the site. The scope of piling work was to provide load-bearing piles under the building columns, some of which were located within a retention system that also required a piling solution. Geological conditions were variable and challenging. The site area was small and located adjacent to the National Arts Centre in the developed Southbank area, a high density office area. This presented logistical problems in limiting construction traffic on site and also demanding minimal noise and vibration emanating from piling activities. The piling contractor, Vibro-Pile, and the builder, Walter Construction Group, faced the challenges presented with a refreshing cooperative attitude that was beneficial to both companies. Commercial issues rising from design and construction problems were first put apart in order to allow the respective technical department of each company to work with minimum constraints to achieve the most cost effective solution. In the process usual adversarial attitudes resulting in loss of time and money was avoided. A number of issues were addressed successfully at minimum cost and time during this contract. Despite the difficulties encountered, the job was completed on time and with negligible claims for extras, resulting in the development of a strong mutual respect between both companies.

Galvanic corrosion between dissimilar materials, such as steel and graphite, leads to safety concerns for many industries, including mining. In this study, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) analyzed rock samples from two mines in the United States that exhibit electrochemical properties similar to graphite through laboratory measurements to investigate their observed in-situ influence on underground metal support. Uniform corrosion rates of mild steel coupons, inflatable bolt coupons, and friction bolt coupons galvanically coupled to rock samples were obtained using both potentiodynamic polarization and zero resistance ammetry. Increased uniform corrosion rates were witnessed between the coupled rock and steel system, over those of just the steel alone. Surface analysis of the metal samples showed the presence of pitting corrosion, reflective of bolt samples removed from partner mines. Corrosion pitting of ground support structures in contact with graphitic rock in underground mines poses safety concerns for mine workers by increasing the rate of corrosion and decreasing bolt strength over time and will be further investigated for intervention strategies.

ABSTRACT Under certain conditions of moisture and oxygen, sulphides can spontaneously self-heat. We tested a hypothesis that galvanic interaction between some sulphides can promote self-heating. Galvanic interaction is controlled by the rest potential difference between sulphides and particle size. A series of binary sulphide mixtures was tested. Individual sulphides and mixtures with low rest potential difference did not self-heat, but mixtures of high rest potential difference did. When testing pyrite-sphalerite mixtures, self-heating increased inversely with particle size, with the fineness of the pyrite governing self-heating, indicating the rate-limiting step is the reduction reaction. The results support the hypothesis that galvanic interaction contributes to sulphide self-heating. A possible mechanism based on hydrogen sulphide as an intermediate product is proposed. The understanding gained will be of interest to those involved in storage, shipping, and disposal of sulphides.

The mining industry represents a significant investment in infrastructure of which steel plays a key role. Many structures in a mine are made of steel including shaft structures (buntons, station steelwork and headgear); stope structures (roof supports, pipe hangers); haulageway structures (ore transfer stations, electrical stubbies); and surface structures (plant buildings, tank supports, pipe gantries, conveyor belts, stacks, stockpile structures, stairways and railings). Maintenance of structural components can often be difficult because of the environment, including those where corrosive fumes persist, or limited access, such as in shafts where access is limited, or to short maintenance shifts or where limited working space is available. Thus a cost-efficient, long-lasting and maintenance-free protection system for steel should be specified. Galvanizing provides the required high-quality, long-term corrosion protection to steel. Galvanizing provides protection in two ways, first as a physical barrier to corrosion and secondly by means of cathodic or sacrificial protection that is unique to zinc. The dual nature of corrosion protection provided by galvanizing significantly extends the service life of steel even in the most challenging environments. The unique corrosion protection properties provided by galvanized steel will be highlighted with global mining application case studies.

INTRODUCTION The former Shiprock uranium mill site is located in the community of Shiprock, New Mexico on a bench overlooking the San Juan River (Figure 1). Both Shiprock and the mill site are located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. The millsite was built on a 230 acre tract leased by Kerr-McGee Oil Industries Inc., and was operated from 1954 to 1963. The Vanadium Corporation of America and its successor, the Foote Mineral Company, operated the mill from 1963 to 1968. During its entire operation, 1.5 million tons of uranium ore was milled producing 3711 tons of U308 concentrate. The concentrate was sold to the former U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. During milling, the ore was crushed to less than 35 mesh and acid leached to remove the uranium. The [ ] uranium was removed from the leach solution by solvent extraction and the uranium-barren solution discharged into raffinate ponds for disposal by evaporation and seepage. The spent solids (tailings) were pulped with waste process fluids and water and discharged to form tailings piles. The piles (ponds or dams) were formed with earth starter dikes. The dike walls were then raised using the separated sand fraction of the tailings. The slime fraction of the tailings were discharged into the diked impoundment. Since only a small fraction (0.25 percent) of the ore was U308 by weight, most of the ore bulk ended up as wastes. The wastes contain nearly all of the uranium decay chain radionuclides present in the ore except uranium. The mill was shut down and partially dismantled before the lease expired in 1973, and the remainder of the mill and wastes reverted back to the Navajo Tribe which was the lessor. Portions of the millsite were then occupied by the Navajo Engineering and Construction Authority (NECA), a Tribal enterprise. In order to provide skilled personnel to operate earth moving equipment, a heavy equipment operator's training school was also established on the mill site and was administered and operated by NECA. The U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) staff conducted radiation surveys at four inactive uranium millsites on the Navajo Reservation in April 1974. During the survey of the Shiprock millsite, it was noted that the training activities were degrading its radiological condition. Both the PHS and EPA staff recommended that the training activities be directed towards the decontamination of the millsite area and interim stabilization of the tailings piles. Preparation for the decontami-nation work commenced in April 1974. In order to facilitate the decontamination activities, the mill site and its contaminated environs were divided into major areas labeled A through F (Figure 2). Areas A, B, and C are defined as "perimeter" areas and contained surface contamination ranging from 5 to 30 cm deep. Area D defined the mill yard and contained contamination ranging from 0.6 to 5.5 m deep. Area E contained several raffinate ponds which were removed to line up the northwest boundary of the tailings pile and to move the contaminants away from the vicinity of the occupied on-site buildings. The contaminants in Area E ranged from 0.05 to 5.5 m in depth. Area F encompassed the ore storage yard. Contaminants in this area ranged from 0.18 to 1.2 m deep. Washes, however, had contamination exceeding 7.6 m deep.

A água utilizada para refrigerar grandes equipamentos de produção, tais como Alto fornos, Fornos do Laminador de Tiras a Quente, Trocadores de Calor das Laminações de Tiras a Frio é originada de diversas torres de resfriamento da Usina, denominadas CBR´s (Casas de Bomba de Refrigeração). A água refrigerada necessita de tratamento químico para proteger os equipamentos de corrosão, deposição e crescimento microbiológico. Este tratamento químico usualmente na CSN é obtido por uma empresa contratada fornecedora de produtos químicos e serviços nestes sistemas. Dentre os serviços destacam-se as análises físico químicas, monitoramento automático das dosagens, avaliação diária dos tratamentos, etc. Recentemente, em Agosto de 2014 houve o início do novo contrato deste tratamento nas nossas CBR´s, mudando-se o fornecedor, os produtos e a equipe de atuação nestes sistemas. Este trabalho visa descrever como foi realizada esta mudança, as dificuldades enfrentadas inicialmente e os ganhos obtidos com esta alteração do tratamento. Destacamos os ganhos no monitoramento em certos sistemas que anteriormente não era realizado, como nos Staves do Alto Forno 3 e os ganhos financeiros em relação ao tratamento.

Garnet is the general name for a family of complex silicate minerals having similar physical properties and crystallizing in the isometric (cubic) system. All garnets have the same general chemical formula but vary greatly in chemical composition. The name garnet is derived from the Latin word granatus, meaning like a grain, which refers to the mode of occurrence wherein crystals resemble grains or seeds embedded in the matrix. GEOLOGY Mineralogy Chemical Properties: The general formula for garnet is A3B2(SiO4)3, whereas A can be calcium, magnesium, ferrous iron, or manganese, and B can be aluminum. ferric iron, or chromium, or rarely titanium. The formulas and names of common garnet species are: [ ] Almandite and almandite-pyrope solid solution garnets are the best abrasive types, but andradite, grossularite, and pyrope also are used. All species of garnet have been used as gemstones. The structure of garnet consists essentially of isolated SiO, tetrahedra connected by oxygen-cation-oxygen bonds through the distinct A and B group cation sites. Within this structure magnesium, ferrous iron, and manganese easily interchange and substitute for each other in the A cation position, and calcium does so less readily. Additionally, aluminum, femc iron, and chromium substitute for each other to a limited extent in the B cation position. This ability to substitute or exchange ions without changing the crystal structure is called isomorphism, and garnet is one of the finest examples of a isomorphous series. Because of this isomorphism there is complete solid solution between certain garnet species but not between others. Fig. 1 illustrates these solid solution relationships. Some rare species of garnet are known that illustrate the wide range of cation substitution that the garnet crystal structure can accommodate. They include: [ ] These rare species are not of interest for industrial applications, but can be of interest to mineralogists and the gem industry. Physical Properties: Garnet displays the greatest variety of color of any industrial mineral. Garnets have been found in all colors except blue. For example, grossularite can be colorless, white, gray, yellow, yellowish green, various shades of green, brown, pink, reddish, or black. Andradite garnet can be yellow- green, green, greenish brown, orangy yellow, brown, grayish black or black. Pyrope is commonly purplish red, pinkish red, orangy red, crimson, or dark red; and almandite is deep red, brownish red, brownish black or violet-red. Spessartite garnet can be red, reddish orange, orange, yellow-brown, reddish brown, or blackish brown. A few garnets exhibit a color-change phenomenon. They are one color when viewed in natural light and another color when viewed in incandescent light. Because of the great variation in color of garnet within each species and similarities in color between garnets of different species it is recommended that garnet identification not be based on color alone. The Mohs hardness of garnet varies from 6.5 to 9.0. Grossularite and uvarovite have a hardness of 6.5 to 7.5; andradite is 6.5 to 7.0; and pyrope, almandite, and spessartite are 7.0 to 7.5 in hardness. There are reports of almandite having a hardness of between 8.0 and 9.0. As with hardness, the specific gravity of garnet varies considerably. The specific gravity may be as low as 3.2 or as high as 4.3 depending on chemical composition. Garnet crystallizes in the isometric system with rhombic dodecahedra and trapezohedra the most common forms. Crystals also form in combinations of dodecahedra and trapezohedra or either of these in combination with hexoctahedra. Crystals can have cubic or octahedral faces, but these are rare. Under favorable conditions of formation garnet will crystalize in nearly perfect forms that rival study models. Garnet also forms as irregular blebs, grains, knots, or masses, with or without distinguishable crystal faces, and as coarse- or fine-grained granular masses that appear to be totally lacking in crystal form. The fracture of garnet also shows great variation. In some garnets, particularly those that are well crystallized and glassy in appearance, the fracture is subconchoidal to conchoidal. Other, more poorly crystallized garnets exhibit a fracture that can only be described as uneven. Garnet occasionally has an indistinct dodecahedral cleavage. Certain species of garnet from specific locations have a pronounced laminated structure consisting of planes of weakness along which parting takes place. This parting may resemble cleavage, but since it is mechanical and not related to crystal structure it is not true cleavage. The optical properties of garnet are sensitive to even small changes in chemical composition or strain in the crystal structure. For this reason each species does not have a single index of re- fraction (IR) but has a range of 1Rs. Uvarovite in its pure form should have an IR of 1.870, but in nature samples vary from 1.74

Despite advances in technology, the Australian underground coal mining industry continues to have incidents involving spontaneous combustion. Managing these incidents relies heavily on understanding the state of the event as it develops and controls are applied. Gas analysis plays a major role in aiding this interpretation. This interpretation is based upon laboratory testing of coal samples under conditions very different to those found in an underground coal mine. This paper will explore the links between laboratory data and actual events. It will highlight the difficulties of using laboratory data. It will outline the relevance of laboratory data and how it can be usefully applied to manage spontaneous combustion events as well as in establishing relevant trigger action response plans to facilitate early detection and control of such events. The paper will identify some of the factors that need to be applied when adapting laboratory data to apply to the underground coal mine. It will outline the need for comprehensive knowledge of the local conditions and gas concentrations to be expected at all locations in an underground coal mine. Further, it will demonstrate the need for mine environment monitoring to go beyond simply measuring gas concentrations but also to include reliable atmospheric pressure, temperature and air velocity monitoring.CITATION:Cliff, D, 2013. I cannot help but be reminded, as I stand here today, of my boyhood years and heritage, both of which are inextricably tied to this very valley and are, in a: bay, apropos of the theme of this Keynote Session. I remember the scarcity of people. For example, 48, 000 in Phoenix and 436, 000 in the State in 1930 and 65,000 in Phoenix and 499, 000 in the State in 1940. Today Phoenix boasts a population of over 500, 000 and the State a population of 1, 500,000. I remember the' lack of facilities, goods and services, including gas and electric power. I recall stories of my grandfather who had the freighting or teaming contract to haul all the supplies and generating equipment, by wagon mind you, up the old Apache Trail to Roosevelt Dam. . .a three day trip from the nearest railhead which, by the way, was not Phoenix, for it did not merit a railhead on those days, but the village of Maricopa approximately 25 miles south of Phoenix. I remember chopping firewood, heating wash water on an open fire in a No. 3 wash tub at the rear of the house and doing my school homework by the light of a kerosene lamp just 25 to 35 years ago within what is now a large metropolitan area

Electrochemical processes occur on nano-, micro- and macro- scale in numerous applications such as fuel cells, batteries, hydrogen production, mineral extraction, water treatment, electrotherapy, sensors and many others. In most of these applications, gases evolve either at one or both electrodes due to electrolysis. These gases form bubbles play a crucial role in electrochemical systems. For example, in electrowinning (EW) that is used to extract and refine metals such as Cu, Zn, Ni, Mn, and Cd from their solutions, in most cases the solution is acidic and oxidation of water molecules at the anode is the common counter reaction, which results in the liberation of oxygen bubbles. This generally requires a high overpotential and accounts for a considerable percentage of the energy consumed in metal EW electrolytic cells, apart from producing acid mist that is very corrosive for other cell equipment and building structures. The behaviour of bubbles in electrochemical systems is still a complex challenging topic which requires a better understanding of gas bubbles hydrodynamics and their interactions with electrode surface and bulk liquid, as well as between the bubbles themselves. The objective of the current paper is to briefly review the fundamental hydrodynamics of both gas bubbles on the electrode surface and gas bubbles interaction with the liquid bulk solution. The current work also investigates the impact of gas bubbling and some operating parameters in copper EW, such as current density (100-500 A/m2), temperature (25-75ºC), acidity (50-300 g/L) and a typical chemical mist suppressant (<50 ppm). The results clearly show that both suppressant and temperature reduced the overall surface tension of the solution. Also, chloride concentration and applied current improved electrolyte flow and copper quality at higher current densities. The current paper contributes to the development of mineral processing (specifically to copper hydrometallurgy), as it deals with fundamental hydrodynamics and interactions of gas bubbles that formed during copper EW and play a crucial role in copper electrochemical systems.

As a result of several recent methane/dust ignitions in surface auger and highwall mines, the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the occurrence of methane gas at these operations. Three mine sites were visited in western Kentucky and one in western Pennsylvania to collect run-of-mine coal samples for gas content determination using the modified-direct-method (MOM). Results indicate the samples emitted small quantities of methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Either methane or nitrogen was the predominant gas released. The same gases were released after crushing the samples for residual gas content; however, nitrogen was the primary component of this fraction. Total ~as contents ranged from less than 0.01 cm /g to 0.54 cm3/g. The hydrocarbon gases probably originated during coalification. Other gases may have originated partially as a byproduct of coalification and partially as a result of other, near-surface processes. The data suggest that although methane quantities are small, desorption could occur at near surface conditions prior to mining. The desorbed methane could accumulate as a free gas in fractures in the coal bed or roof rock. When these fractures are penetrated by the auger, methane could rapidly enter the whole atmosphere possibly creating explosive conditions.

The use of explosives in mining operations is a process that involves the search for an ideal explosive for the type of geological condition of the mineral to be extracted. For the explosives present on the market the majority are based on Ammonium Nitrate. This as it is an ideal balance of high energy efficiency achieved with low development of gas emission. The manufacturing and loading operation of the explosive requires multiple process stages and different raw materials, which, if is not correctly supervised and controlled may cause the development of harmful gases or, in the worst case, even toxic gases. The majority of mining operations are located at remote locations without the presence of communities, and hence individuals, which could be affected by emission of the harmful or even toxic gases. In these operations the protection is mainly to protect the employees of the operation. However, if the operation is located near communities, the effect of these gases becomes a serious problem. The communities' perception of post-blasting gases, according to interviews carried out in this project, describes these as smells of black gunpowder, damp soil with a volatile permanence and medium intensity, sometimes a stinking tone is added. The legislation in Chile that controls the exposure of “workers” to different gases is Supreme Decree 594, 2019 (Decreto Supremo 594). Currently the Chilean Ministry of Environment and Sernageomin (Servicio Nacional de Geología y Minería) are taking actions to reform and strengthen oversight, seeking through a short law to provide more tools to the government to decentralize decisions in case of non-compliance with the decree. This paper describes the development and implementation of a permanent and remote gas monitoring system, considering the reasons for choosing the gases to be included in the equipment, the types of sensors and their capabilities, the way to verify in the field the correct functioning of the technology throughout the project, and finally how the data collected in the field is meeting the government's expectations in terms of permanent and online reportability. Additionally, it addresses the continuity of gas monitoring in the community that will disappear in the short term due to the expansion of mining operations, thereby ensuring the protection of both workers and affected communities.

Two coal samples (810 Panel and Area 900) collected from Clarence Colliery have been tested under a controlled heating procedure to evaluate the gas evolution trends corresponding to increasing temperature. Gas evolution data are normally used to identify key gas indicators and validate the trigger action response plan settings for the mine as part of the Principal Hazard Management Plan for Spontaneous Combustion. The samples were located some 6 km apart and there is a significant coal-type difference between them. At low temperatures (&lt;100&#176;C), the Graham’s ratio (GR) values for the two samples are almost identical. However, at elevated temperatures, there is a significant difference, with the 810 Panel coal having higher GR values than the Area 900 coal. This is most likely due to a difference in the coal reactivity. The 810 Panel coal does not evolve ethylene until temperatures in excess of 140&#176;C are reached, whereas Area 900 coal evolves ethylene once temperatures in excess of 120&#176;C are reached. The 810 Panel coal also produces significant ethane evolution (200 ppm) at low temperatures (50&#176;C) due to the presence of retained ethane seam gas, which decreases as the temperature increases due to desorption from the coal. Once the coal temperature exceeds 130&#176;C, the ethane evolution increases again due to coal oxidation reactions, reaching levels of 50 ppm. In contrast, the Area 900 coal has no significant low-temperature ethane evolution, and ethane evolution only increases once the coal temperature exceeds 120&#176;C. There are also noticeable differences in the trends of other gases evolved from the coal. These findings have implications for the interpretation of gas monitoring results from the two different areas of the mine. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) Purple Line Extension Section 1 (PLE1) is a $3.12 billion USD design-build, underground heavy rail project, connecting an existing station at Wilshire Blvd. and Western Ave. and extending 3.92 miles under Wilshire Blvd, terminating approximately 550 feet west of Wilshire and La Cienega Blvds. The project alignment runs immediately adjacent to the La Brea Tar Pits, world renowned for Pleistocene fossils and continuous seepage of asphaltum (locally known as tar) and gas in an urban setting. This paper presents a successful case history of the planning, design, and construction efforts to safely construct the bored tunnels through Reach 3 of the alignment (between Wilshire/Fairfax Station, and Wilshire/La Cienega Station), in a designated Methane Zone in the City of Los Angeles. Historical context on decades of challenges and studies is summarized. Further, this paper outlines the pro-active partnership between the Owner: LA Metro, the Design Builder: Skanska-Traylor-Shea Joint Venture, and geotechnical design services provided by Golder Associates to safely manage pressurized face tunneling through a confined gas zone near the La Brea Tar Pits. Specifically, a program of in-situ oxidation and soil gas extraction was designed to test and analyze risks associated with pressurized face TBM tunneling through the complex subsurface geological conditions, then implemented during construction. In advance of tunneling, a network of wells was used to draw air into the gas zone to oxidize the 6,500 ppm hydrogen sulfide gas, as well as determine methane recharge rate. During TBM tunneling, the wells were converted to a gas extraction system to evacuate, filter (H2S) and burn (CH4) the gas as the Tunnel Boring Machine passed, providing a preferential pathway for the gas to migrate toward extraction wells, and preventing the migration to adjacent buildings. The team extracted and treated 3,857,000 cubic feet of mostly methane gas over 40 days as the TBMs passed through the zone. Gas behavior, pressures, and concentrations were monitored not only from the extraction system, but also in basements and utility vaults along this section of the alignment.

DOME MINES, Limited, is a gold producer situated in the Porcupine area of Ontario, 500 miles north of Toronto. During the year 1960, '71 4,600 tons of ore were milled, yielding gold bullion valued at $6,025,370. Prior to conversion to natural gas, an average of 3,200 tons of coal was consumed annually, one third of which was obtained from Canadian sources with the remainder coming from the United States. Due to the distances involved, the freight charges increased the pithead cost by as much as ISO per cent. Steam is generated at a central boiler plant and used for timber treatment, plant heating and process steam. Until August, 1960, steam was supplied during the winter months by two water tube coal-fired boilers, each rated at 200 boiler horsepower at 100 per cent output. Estimation of gas holdup from electrical conductivity measurements has been used in lab and industrial installations. The approach is based on the application of Maxwell's model, which relates the concentration of a dispersed phase in a continuous medium to measurements of the electrical conductivity of the dispersed phase, continuous medium and the resulting mixture (dispersion). When applied to inferring the collection zone gas holdup in a three phase system and to facilitate real-time on-line measurement, the slurry is assumed to behave as the continuous medium and gas bubbles as a nonconducting dispersed phase. This article derives an equation for estimating gas holdup in a three phase system, eliminating the assumption that the slurry behaves as a continuous medium but rather as a dispersion of non-conducting solid particles in water. In this formulation only water behaves as the continuous medium in the sense of Maxwell, and gas holdup in a three phase system is then calculated from the application of the Maxwell model twice: (1) to determine solid content in a two-phase system, and (2) to determine solid plus gas holdup in a three phase system. To validate the new equation and quantify the errors incurred by assuming slurry is the continuous phase a laboratory flotation cell was instrumented to continuously measure the conductivity of two and three phase dispersions with known solids contents. As the amount of gas in a lab flotation machine is difficult to measure directly or by another indirect technique such as using pressure signals, 2.5 mm dielectric plastic spheres having a density of ca. 1.3 g/cm3 were used instead of air bubbles for validation. Experimental results demonstrated that the continuous medium assumption underestimates gas holdup and that the resulting bias error increases linearly with the solid content and decreases with the magnitude of gas holdup.

The study of gas emitted from face coal samples at the coal face is part of an investigation of instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas. Normally, seam gas essentially comprises methane of which the origin in the metamorphism of coal is undoubted. The origin of other gases sometimes occurring in high proportion in seam gas, particularly carbon dioxide, is more controversial. A simple meter for rapidly assessing gas in coal was developed. Tests with the meter enabled comparisons of seam gas in face coal at some outbursting and nonoutbursting mines, and under various working conditions. The varying results of widespread testing suggest certain trends, including some prospect of recognising outbursting potential at the coal face.INTRODUCTIONThe aim of this work is identification of differences in gas condition between coals subject to instantaneous outbursts and coals which have not outburst, and between faces of coals which will and which will not subsequently outburst. Any comparative test should be conducted right at the coal face on coal about to be worked and the results of testing should be available after a short period. Moreover, the method and the comparison of results should require no special skill, and be well within the capacity of junior mine officials. DURING the past twelve months the Loudon pool of the Eastern Interior Coal Basin has become established as one of the two largest discoveries since the revival of exploitation in the Illinois region and now occupies a position among the important pools of the United States. On Aug. 1, 1939, production averaged 54,000 bbl. per day from 990 wells, having accumulated a total of 10,305,000 bbl. Its very active develop-ment promises to continue for fully another year. It is the site of one of the industry&apos;s most singular large-scale gas-injection programs. LOCATION AND RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS At present the pool embraces an area 15 miles long by 3 ½ miles wide in eastern Fayette County, along the western rim of the now well-known Illinois Basin&apos;s deeper part, through townships 6, 7 and 8 north and ranges 2 and 3 east of the Third Meridian. It is the northernmost, and most prominent, productive structure of a group extending over a 50-mile trend southward to the Dix pool of Jefferson County. Three horizons have been proved to carry production-namely, the Weiler sandstone at 1390 ft., the Paint Creek sand at 1460 ft. and the Benoist or Bethel, at 1500 ft. Geologically, they fall in the Chester series of the upper Mississippian system, where much of Illinois&apos; early-day oil was found, having been laid down in shallow off-shore waters as a part of the vast delta deposit underlying central Illinois and parts of Indiana and Kentucky. As a result of this type of sedimentation, followed by repeated uplifts and warping along an anticlinal axis, differ-ential deposition of sands and shales contributing to great irregularity took place. This is further reflected by wide variations in permeability, porosity and thickness of all the sands and, accordingly, in the producing characteristics of wells. Permeabilities range as high as 550 millidarcies, with the average commonly lying between 60 and 100. For the three pay horizons the mean porosity is 18 per cent, at a calculated water saturation of roughly 30 per cent. To filly secure the environmental and social acceptability benefits of making a sulphide smelting facility and its ancillary sulphuric acid plant or other means for fixing sulphur, a virtually zero gas emission operation, it will be necessary to utilise exclusively technically pure oxygen. The strategy proposed for preventing the smelter from overheating involves highly efficient energy transfer by promoting sulphur trioxide formation at a relatively higher temperature than normal. A closed-loop gas circuit uses an eductor system actuated by the process oxygen to recirculate sulphur trioxide and unconverted sulphur dioxide back to the smelter, the endothermic dissociation of sulphur trioxide becoming a major contributor to the removal of excess heat. The only gases leaving the system relate to the bleed of nitrogen impurity introduced in the tonnage oxygen.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research related to unconventional gas wells positioned in abutment pillars associated with active longwall mining in Southwestern PA. The Ventilation and Explosion Prevention Team at NIOSH is working toward predicting and characterizing a hypothetical casing breach and its effect on the safety and health of mine workers, gas well workers, and the general public. An important aspect of this research is to distinguish coalbed gas from shale gas in the mine environment as an indicator of a casing breach. Another noncoal gas source exists in the region in the form of underground gas storage fields which also have the potential to migrate towards mine workings. During a potential gas breach, the addition of excess natural gas to coal mine environments will exceed the anticipated ventilation loading and can create a mine explosion hazard. A methodology has been developed to distinguish these gas sources. Gas samples from the three sources were analyzed by gas chromatography, and interpretive methods were applied to distinguish the populations graphically and statistically. Bivariate plots using the hydrocarbon index and the normalized molecular ratios showed that the sources occupy different regions of the graphs. All samples of non-coal gas contained under 2% CO2, and all coal samples included greater than this amount. A multivariate T-squared (T2) test analysis relating comparing data in pairs showed a low p-value (dimensionality parameter) and a high T2 test statistic for all comparisons, indicating that these sources are different and distinct gas populations. Ultimately, stakeholders from the mining and gas production industries can utilize this method to identify gas sources and a potential casing breach.
