"Experiments in conjunction with finite element analysis (FEA) are used to better predict crack propagation in ductile/brittle graded composites. Cu/W graded composites were fabricated by stacking discrete layers of powders and hot pressing. Crack propagation was studied by loading a notched beam in four point bending and examining the subsequent crack deflection. The notch was placed within a particular composition of material, oriented in a direction perpendicular to the gradient direction. Elastic and plastic mismatch between different constituents in the graded composite induce shifts in the phase angle of loading, thereby causing the crack to deflect. FEA indicates that thermal residual stress has a negligible ""influence on the crack path. The combined FEA and experimental results suggest that elastic mismatch is the single most important material property-related factor in controlling crack deflection.IntroductionMany 'applications would benefit or may even require materials whose performance or functionality must vary spatially. While the concept of functionally graded materials has existed for nearly one hundred years, it is only within the last fifteen years, that research efforts have focused on generic issues in processing, properties and performance of functionally graded materials. This generic research effort has brought together scientists and engineers from traditionally different disciplines to address common issues with graded composites. The current work focuses on issues in structural joining. A wide variety of applications require some type of joining between dissimilar materials. Examples include thermal barrier coatings for turbine engines, wear resistant coatings for tools, ceramic engine parts, and microeiectronic devices, as well as many traditional applications involving metallic welding. The joints may either be discrete, involving a single interface, or they may· be spatially graded in composition. Extensive theoretical and experimental information exists on discrete bimaterial and trimaterial joints, but relatively little exists for graded joints or composites"

Introduction Improvements in the process of rock excavation by blasting involves better control of one or more phases of the fracture process immediately after detonating the ex- plosive charge. Total control of the process involves individual control of (1) The number of fracture planes. (2) The crack initiation sites. (3) The direction of crack propagation (usually radial). (4) The stress field driving the fracture front. Fracture plane control is usually accomplished today by using the smooth wall blasting method; however, investigations by the authors (1) indicate several areas where this method could be improved. These improvements include: a) generation of stress concentration factors at the location of the initiation sites; b) protection of the remaining region of the borehole wall to inhibit initiation of any cracks not associated with the fracture plane and fragmentation pattern; c) limit peak detonation pressures to avoid borehole crushing and maintain by stemming residual gas pressure in the bore- hole during the crack propagation period. This paper describes experiments con- ducted with a charge holding device fabricated from thin-wall steel tubing which was partially slit at fracture locations. The tube lined the bore-hole in laboratory tests to simulate smooth wall blasting. Results showed close control could be achieved relative to both the number and the location of the fracture initiation sites.

"In order to investigate the fracturing of the bedrock and its possible heterogeneous distribution in situ, four boreholes equipped with double-U geothermal pipes of 100 m long were installed on the campus of the University of Liege (Liege, Belgium) over a surface area of 32 m². The bedrock, which starts at a depth approximately of 8 m, is quite fractured and consists mainly of siltstone and shale interbedded with sandstone.Different geophysical methods are applied at two different phases, after drilling the boreholes and after injecting the grouting material. The first approach consists in lowering an ultrasonic borehole imager (borehole televiewer; Zemanek, Glenn, Norton, & Caldwell, 1970), an instrument that acts as an ultrasonic transducer and receiver, into the boreholes to obtain high-resolution, continuous images with 360° coverage of the local geology and fracturing. Moreover gamma-ray logs of the four boreholes are obtained and inclinometry is conducted.After drilling the boreholes fiber optic cables are attached along the pipe loops and the double-U pipes are installed inside the boreholes. Then the grouting material is injected. The second approach consists in measuring the temperature along the fibers by applying the Distributed Temperature Sensing technique (Soto, Sahu, Faralli, Bolognini, Di Pasquale, Nebendahl, & Rueck, 2007). A laser pulse is injected into the optical fiber and the temperature along the fiber is determined by the intensity of Raman stokes and anti-stokes reemitted signals. Temperature evolution is measured during hardening of the grouting material. Local maxima of the temperature curve are probably due to a local lower thermal conductivity and/or a local larger quantity of grouting material due to gathering of fractures.A detailed fracture characterisation (position, opening, orientation, dip angle) is obtained based on the acoustic signal travel time and amplitude. The fractures are characterised by the same dipping and orientation but significantly vary in number and location in the four boreholes, despite the close distance between them. Gamma-ray data and observation of the cuttings during drilling result in rock identification through depth as well as in determination of the layer dipping. The inclination of the four boreholes tends to be perpendicular to the dipping. The combination of the two geophysical methods as presented provides information useful for the hydro-thermo-mechanical behaviour of the bedrock. The contribution of the thermal behaviour of borehole heat exchangers to bedrock investigation will be further studied by conducting Distributed Thermal Response tests (Fujii, Okubo, & Itoi, 2006). During the tests we will measure the temperature variation thanks to the installed fiber optics. These data will allow us to correlate any anisotropic thermal behaviour to the geological characteristics. The available information could be used for a detailed numerical model."

Gas in U.S. coals is primarily composed of 90 to 99 percent methane and up to 10 per- cent carbon dioxide. In composition and heat- ing value, this coal-bed gas is similar to natural gas and can be introduced directly into commercial pipelines after standard condition- ing. The high permeability cleat system in the virgin coal can be exploited in order to drain the coal gas well in advance of mining. Two premining drainage methods have been extensive- ly evaluated in the U.S.; they are 1) horizon- tal boreholes collared from within the mine, and 2) vertical drilling from the surface with fracturing. Limited-size fracture treatments are advocated in order to prevent potential roof damage and the need for added support. An engineering approach to predicting gas flow for different drainage techniques near mining locations is presented. Results can be used in design, i.e. pipeline, compressor. Coal gas drainage from a horizontal borehole and a treated (contained fracture) vertical well for a 6 foot seam have been evaluated. The paper addresses blast pattern fragmentation and diggability versus the blasting technique used. RESUME The author is the Vice President for Thunderbird Mining Systems. In this capacity he manages the mine site installation of surface mining mobile equipment monitoring and navigation systems. These systems are onboard instrumentation and software systems designed to: ??measure and log mobile equipments? production and health; and ??direct the equipment operators via onboard displays that show comprehensive maps and engineering instructions. The author is a mining engineering graduate from the Royal School of Mines. His work experience includes front line supervisor and mining engineer for Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting, mining engineer for Teck Corporation, and mining consultant for PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Fragmentation is an important factor for improving downstream processes in mine operations. Six trials have been conducted at the Aitik copper mine to investigate the effect of ultra-short inter-hole delay times, i.e. smaller than 1 ms/m of burden, on fragmentation. Swelling, MWD data, and crusher efficiency were also evaluated for trials. According to the results, the effect of examined short inter-hole delay times, i.e. 0.14 to 0.86 ms/m of burden, on fragmentation was found to be marginal. Delay time of 0.43 ms/m of burden resulted in slightly finer fragmentation and larger swell; however, the effect of short delays was overshadowed by the effect of small variations in specific charge.

The Mitsubishi Higashitani limestone mine is a ten million tonne per annum operation located near the city of Kitakyushu on JapanÆs western island of Kyushu. Higashitani is one of the largest limestone mines in Japan and accounts for about five per cent of national production. Blasting practices at the Higashitani mine involve the use of bagged ANFO, dynamite primers and non-electric detonators. Regulations in Japan prohibit the use of site mixed bulk explosives. Blast size is usually around 17 000 tonnes with 20 holes in a single row, two or three blasts are fired per day at a powder factor of between 0.25 and 0.32 kg/m3. As part of a program looking at oversize reduction Mitsubishi, Asahi and Orica agreed to conduct a joint project at the Higashitani mine to investigate the relationship between the powder factor and fragmentation. The first stage of the project was to benchmark the current blasting performance. Five blasts were monitored in each of the 210 (hard rock) and 220 (soft rock) areas of the mine. OricaÆs Powersieve« software was used to measure fragmentation and total rock breaker hours were also recorded for each blast. OricaÆs computer blasting simulation model Sabrex« was used to prepare revised blast designs with a higher powder factor and predict their performance. The performance of these blasts was monitored using the same methods.

Highland Valley Copper (HVC) has embraced an integrated Mine to Mill approach to comminution since the late 1990s. Previous blasting optimization was carried out through adjustments to blast pattern geometry (i.e., reduction of burden and spacing). This approach proved very effective and HVC reduced the burden and spacing of high energy ore blast patterns to what was considered the practical limit that still allowed for efficient drilling and bulk truck loading operations. While mining in the bottom of the Valley pit near the end of the previous pushback, HVC encountered high static groundwater conditions which enabled the transmission of elevated inter-blasthole pressures that had the potential to exceed safe operating limits for initiation products. This risk was mitigated through an expansion of burden and spacing for the high energy ore patterns, reducing the application of blasting energy and increasing the average particle size in Mill feed.

"The Multiple Blasthole Fragmentation (MBF) model models multiple explosive charge contributions and the effect on fragmentation of delay timing with its associated scatter for each blasthole. The model uses near-field blast vibration attenuation parameters and the ground p-wave velocity as inputs for part of the in situ rock property to model rock fragmentation. It models most blast design parameters explicitly and simulates the effect of wave reinforcement due to the interaction of simultaneously arriving waves or diminishing cooperative contribution from long delay intervals between charges within a blasthole or among blastholes. The fragmentation size is calculated at three-dimensional grid points within a blast, and the fines and oversized blocks are treated explicitly. The model takes a surveyed irregular geometry of the free face of a blast as the calculation boundary.This paper presents a case study on applying the MBF model at an openpit mine. Near-field vibration measurements from signature hole blasts were conducted to obtain the stress-wave magnitude and attenuation parameters as well as ground sonic velocity. A production blast was then monitored with the corresponding fragmentation measured, serving as site-specific inputs to the MBF model. Various blast design scenarios were then simulated to develop ones that provide better fragmentation to improve mill throughput for the mine. IntroductionThe semiempirical fragmentation models currently found in the literature (Cunningham, 1987; Lownds, 1995) cannot explicitly model contributions from multiple blastholes with varying delay intervals. Most of these models are not three-dimensional. Furthermore, these models predict an average fragmentation size within a volume surrounding a blasthole and use the average size to generate a size distribution over the volume. The percentage of fines and oversize blocks is included in the distribution. Typically, such models are inadequate for predicting fines and oversize blocks (Cunningham, 1987)."

Some two million cubic yards of sandstone and orthoquartzite were blasted and excavated at Upper Stillwater Dam, located high in the Uinta Mountains in northern Utah. The material was processed to produce concrete aggregate for the construction of the largest roller compacted concrete (RCC) dam ever constructed, and one of just a few in existence. The dam cross-section is shown in Figure 1. The aggregate was sound rock produced from required dam foundation excavation and from a quarry located about 1/2 mile from the dam site. Representative compressive strengths of the sandstones and quartzites were in the range of 20,000 to 30,000 psi.

The Anglo American phosphate mine is located in the Brazilian state of Goiás and possesses one of Brazil’s most important phosphate rock deposits, with the site being the country’s second largest producer of phosphate rock concentrate. Despite the site having been in operation since 1979, the mining team only started using explosives in 2004 when rocks with greater hardness started to appear in the mine’s geological profile. Rock excavation was previously performed mechanically. Until 2013, only rocks with high hardness were blasted, this following the standard drilling grid that was defined in 2004 without any changes in the blast parameters. The aim of this paper is to show how fragmentation optimisation has yielded positive results at all stages of the production chain, from the mine to the mill passing through an impact hammer crusher, a rod mill and ball mill, operating in close circuit with hydrocyclones.While incorporating the mine to mill holistic approach during the operational integration, the focus was on defining the blasting domains and respective optimal fragmentation and measuring the benefits of blasting in terms of reduction in energy and grinding media consumed in the comminution processes. In the first stage, the blasting team made changes to the blasting parameters and assessed the effects of these changes on fragmentation using computer software and on-site measurements. This generated a database that made it possible to divide the mine into blasting domains. For the second stage, teams from the plant, geology, mine planning and operation departments jointly made comparisons between the performance when processing stockpiles, which only included high hardness blasted ore (20–30 per cent of blasted ore). Changing the drilling grid’s size from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.0 m × 2.6 m for high hardness rock with the presence of silicates resulted in a 40 per cent reduction in the P80 for the blasted material (from 459 to 278 mm), while changing the grid from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.6 m × 3.2 m for high hardness rock without the presence of silicates generated a reduction of 25 per cent (from 270 to 204 mm). There were gains observed from the measurements at the mineral processing plant in terms of specific energy spent on comminution and on the consumption of grinding bodies in the rod mill. As the economy continues to slowly recover, our industry continues to finds ways to increase productivity while being forced to cut costs. The drilling and blasting process is the starting point of any aggregate or mining process. Many people refer to it as the “Primary Crusher” as it will always be more efficient to crush rock with explosives energy than it will be mechanical energy. It is the more efficient use of this energy that is addressed in this paper.

Block cave fragmentation has been documented in the literature to have a significant impact on mine design, performance and downstream material handling and comminution processes. Due to this impact, emphasis is placed on the premining prediction and subsequent quantification of primary and secondary fragmentation distribution. This paper discusses the fragmentation prediction and assessment methodology employed at the Ridgeway Deeps (RWD) and Cadia East PC1 (CEPC1) cave operations.Prediction of drawpoint fragmentation was based on an iterative process, which relied on an improved quantitative and qualitative understanding of the rock mass as the mining project developed. In particular, the collection of scanline mapping data provided detailed information in relation to discontinuity trace length, persistence, termination characteristics and large-scale planarity. This allowed an improved estimation of select modelling input parameters, in particular ‘block forming’ discontinuity orientation and strength characteristics.With the start of production, drawpoint fragmentation assessment was undertaken using digital image processing (DIP) techniques for drawpoint extracted tonnes up to 61 000 t. This technique provided a consistent methodology to estimate changes in fragmentation as the block cave matured. It can generally be concluded that the measured mean fragmentation distribution became finer as drawpoint tonnage increased. The incremental change in fragmentation distribution (per 10 000 t) was not uniform, with step changes evident. In addition, for a given geotechnical domain and drawpoint tonnage, the measured fragmentation distribution range was found to vary significantly. A possible explanation for these observations may relate to the disturbed flow behaviour noted from marker experiments at RWD and CEPC1. These experiments indicate that material reporting at the drawpoints (for any given tonnage extracted) may be sourced from highly variable heights within the cave, with finer material preferentially reporting.A comparison between predicted and measured drawpoint fragmentation distribution indicated two general findingsa close match between predicted and measured distributions for material greater than 1.0 m3an under prediction of finer material passing 0.5 m3 relative to measured.The findings would indicate that the fragmentation modelling frameworks utilised at both RWD and CEPC1 were deficient at predicting the percentage of finer material for both primary and secondary fragmentation.The wide range in fragmentation distributions observed in the measured results, and the discrepancy between modelled and measured fines should be considered in the design of mine (material flow, extraction level geometry and draw rate), material handling (crushing and material movement), and downstream milling (comminution and metal recovery) processes for future block cave mines at the Cadia Valley Operations (CVO). With respect to fragmentation distribution range, a sensitivity analysis should be undertaken for these design considerations, with a range in predicted fragmentation distributions investigated (for example, lower quartile, mean and upper quartile). For future mines with similar geotechnical and mining conditions, the calibration of fines should be considered in any fragmentation distribution prediction to match those measured previously.CITATION:Brunton, I, Lett, J L and Thornhill, T, 2016. The degree of fragmentation obtained in primary quarry blasting has always been a factor in the speed of digging' the muckpile This paper will discuss a case history of increased production and associated lowered costs from increased fragmentation. The quarry under discussion is fairly new, located in Georgia, and is in the large operation .category. Loading is done by three yard shovels, and, primary crushing by a 48" x 60" haw crusher preceded by a 5' wide feeder. The stone is a hard granite gneiss, of Los Angeles rating 22, and apparent specific gravity is 2.68. The product is shipped to points in that state for railroad ballast, concrete aggregate, and road building stone. Inasmuch as fairly large shovels and a large Jaw were to be utilized, initial drilling and blasting were pointed toward producing fairly large sized muck for this large equipment. This was following a concept somewhat in vogue for some years in the Southeast wherein many large equipment plants would tend towards larger fragmentation, and smaller equipped plants would conversely tend toward attempts at smaller sized rock piles for smaller shovels and crushers.

We present a framework for solving the problem of functional compatibility between process control equipment in control centres at underground mines and operator capabilities. The equipment incorporates displays of current ventilation, gas, and fire hazard data, status of alarm and early warning systems, a voice communication subsystem, and facilities for recording and printing ofdata and reports. The layout of the existing control panel is compared with a recommended design. The basic principles of ergonomic design and arrangement of the controls and indicators, as well as ease of use, type of operations carried out with these controls, and operators’ viewing angles are discussed. The objective is to improve the usability of control panels, display boards, and graphic screens so as to enhance the functioning of control centres and optimize control of technological processes in coal mines.

"Annually thousands of deep foundations are constructed across North America supporting high voltage transmission line structures. However, a recent state of the practice survey by the Deep Foundation Institutes’ Electric Power Systems Foundation Working Group discovered that the electric power utility industry lacks consistent foundation design guidelines. The survey identified a wide variability in design assumptions, a minimal understanding of risk based analysis, and a need to standardize design methodologies. This paper summarizes the state of practice in electric system foundation design and proposes a framework for risk-based foundation design by accounting for uncertainty from both loads and resistances. Loads derived from electric system codes do not necessarily provide a compatible level of reliability for the design of foundations, as they are a mixture of probabilistic and deterministic values. Load uncertainty is derived from variability in weather conditions, structural models and material properties, typically accounted for by code derived overload factors. Resistance uncertainty arises from variability in natural soil properties, resistance models, subsurface construction techniques, material sampling methods, and limited observations. A consistent methodology is offered relating nominal resistance capacity (strength) to structure loads and service state criteria. Discussion also includes the need for risk-based assessments to account for non-structure load influences (fluvial loads, scour ground loss, liquefaction, etc.).INTRODUCTIONNearly 40 years ago the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) embarked on a major research effort to optimize reliability and economics of transmission line foundation design. Strategies focused on improvements in design models, site characterization, exploration strategies and testing to reduce uncertainty and variance in analysis. Transmission line engineers realized that safety and reliability advancements in design based on probabilistic approaches, with a focus on the unique nature of transmission line, could better control risk and cost.Some transmission line professionals took full advantage of these advancements, particularly where research led to improved software and models. Yet, even after two decades of extensive research, by 1995 the industry still had made little progress in changing design habits. The majority of designers were still characterizing sites via deterministic methods, using loads that may or may not relate to a consistent probability of occurrence, and applying a traditional global factor of safety approach (Phoon, et al. 1995). The following two decades have seen even greater developments in software and reliability-based analysis methods, but old habits seem to die hard as recent surveys show less than half of design professional quantitatively assess risk in their design process."

Access to secure and reliable water resources is fundamental to the minerals industry. In recognition of that requirement, and cognisant of extensive contemporary public water debate and reform initiatives in Australia, the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) approached the Ministerial Council on Mineral and Petroleum Resources (MCMPR) proposing the establishment of a Joint Working Group to prepare a framework of strategic principles to ensure responsible water management at a site and corporate level, manage risks and identify opportunities. The Framework provides high-level guidance on issues that should be addressed in water decision making across Australia in relation to mining and associated processing operations. It identifies principles and objectives for adoption in four areas, viz: valuing water, strategic water planning, implementation, and engaging stakeholders. Given the high level nature of the Framework, and its national application, it does not seek to replicate detailed guidelines already widely available in each state and territory on operational water management practices and associated regulatory issues at mine sites. The Framework includes a series of case studies from across Australia that demonstrate where strategic thinking, wise water management and close consultation with stakeholders has delivered better water use, more profitable operations and excellent community/stakeholder relationships. The Framework was formally launched on behalf of MCMPR by the Western Australian Minister for Resources at the MCAÆs Sustainable Development Conference in Perth in October 2006. "The property of Francoeur Gold Mines, Limited, lies directly west of the Armfield mine in Beauchastel township, Abitibi district, and 12 miles west and slightly south of Noranda. The gold deposits are of particular interest because of their replacement character and close association with fault zones. The property was originally staked in 1923 following the discovery oi a mineralized zone near the eastern boundary. This became No. 1 orebody. Later discoveries in 1936 of No. 2 and No. 3 orebodies led to underground development and actual mining in July, 1938. A fourth orebody, No. 8, was found in 1939.The following is the production record up to December 31st, 1947:Beginning in September, 1944, ore was shipped to Noranda as siliceous flux, but late in 1946 milling of low-silica ore from No. 1 orebody was undertaken until operations were temporarily suspended in 1947.The four main ore deposits, Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 8, consist of siliceous ferrocarbonate and albite replacement bodies mineralized with fine pyrite and specularite in schistose fault zones in Keewatin volcanics. Barren to low grade quartz veins though present in some are uncommon, but small stringers of quartz are usually present wherever here and there visible gold is found. Nos. 1, 2, and 3 deposits lie in a major fault zone that extends completely across the property from west to east (over 7,000 feet) and dips N.40° to 50°, and are separated by intervals of 1,800 to 2,000 feet respectively. The fourth lies in a smaller fault zone striking east and dipping on the average 65°S.No. 1 orebody has been explored by mining to a depth of 500 feet, No. 2 to 400 feet, and No. 3 to slightly less than 300 feet . The greater part of No. 8 lies above a depth of 200 feet, but a raise has recently .been driven through from the west end of the 5th level of No. 1 to the 2nd level on No. 8 zone. Most of the ore of No. 8 zone above the 2nd level and of Nos. 2 and 3 above the 3rd levels has been removed."

An overview is provided of Franklin Industrial Minerals mica mine and plant operations located near Velarde, New Mexico. Operated by Franklin Industrial Minerals since July of 1990, several process and product modifications have been developed and instituted to improve the operation. In addition to a brief history of site operations, descriptions of the mining, beneficiation, delamination grinding, and product classification processes are reviewed. Supportive topics discussed include equipment modifications and improvements, product application diversification, and specific product characterization. "Driven piles were selected to support the Fraser Heights Bridge bents. Piles were a key component of the top-down construction approach, which was adopted for minimizing potential impacts on an environmentally sensitive wetland. Project requirements mandated verification of pile capacities using dynamic methods. More than 40 Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) tests were performed. The subsurface conditions were highly variable. On the east side, piles extended through loose sands, soft silts/clays, and two peat layers and were founded in glacial till-like soils at about 45 m depth. However, on the west side, till-like materials were so shallow that it was difficult to drive the piles sufficiently deep to obtain the necessary lateral support. This paper provides an overview of the geotechnical considerations of the bridge design and top-down construction approach, and expands on the presentation of PDA results and how they compared to pile capacity estimation methods and parameters recommended in the applicable design codes.INTRODUCTIONThe Fraser Heights Bridge (FHB) was a component of the Fraser Heights Connector (FHC), a 2 km section of the South Fraser Perimeter Road (SFPR), constructed as part of the Port Mann/Highway 1 (PMH1) Improvement Project. The FHC is located in northeast Surrey BC (Fig. 1).Two major design and construction determinants were: 1) a mandated tight schedule to provide a non-tolled alternative to a new toll bridge; and, 2) an obligation that construction had to occur with minimal impact on the environmentally sensitive wetland the FHB crossed, including limiting the footprint of the permanent and temporary works to less than 45 m2, and prohibiting construction access onto the wetland. Construction equipment was only allowed on the wetland on temporary trestles or on the finished structure. This latter requirement resulted in the bridge being constructed span by span, using a top-down approach."
