One concern of the Mine Safety and Health Administration is the structural integrity of steel wire ropes used on mine personnel hoists and elevators. Failure of such ropes has resulted in loss of life and property. Although thorough and regular visual examinations are performed, hoist ropes may still fail from undetected internal wear, corrosion, and broken wires. To complement visual examinations, nondestructive rope inspection techniques have been developed to determine deterioration and removal criteria. The techniques use electromagnetic and permanent-magnet test instruments designed by a Canadian firm. This paper describes the operating principles, field and laboratory testing of these nondestructive testing instruments, and discusses the feasibility of using this type of testing as a supplement to visual examination and destructive tests.

This paper examines the desired blast fragmentation results associated with mining fleet performance at Sidney Quarry of Pike Industries, A CRH Company by reducing cycle times and hauling less oversize material generated from the blast to the crusher to increase the overall plant throughput. We are constrained with blast patterns due to the poorly sorted and fractured seams in the quarry, which is angled at 35° NE and dipping at 80° and runs parallel to the Interstate-95 highway on the east of the quarry boundary about 600 ft, making it challenging to alter the blast patterns for optimal yield. We evaluated multiple relationships between blast patterns in conjunction with loader diggability. Results analyzed include the digging hours, fleet cycle times, and the fragment size with the optimized blast design through 3GSM software to arrive at the optimal yield to maximize the crusher throughput. Our primary objective is to focus on safety with efficient cycle times and clean floors & clean face generation for better operational efficiencies. Secondly, to optimize the crusher yield which is an integral part of quarry operation. Further, this paper provides the utilization of 3GSM blasting techniques in quarry applications with computer vision fragmentation analysis and VizaLogix, a fleet management software to analyze the cycle times sampling.

Flexible synthetic membrane liners have become a standard facet to copper and gold heap leach pad design. While gold heap leach operations have utilized most types of synthetic liners, copper leach operations have commonly only been lined with polyethylene. The objective of this study was to determine if there are any chemical reasons why other synthetic membrane types could not be used to line a copper heap leach facility. With engineered consideration, the flexible membrane liner under the ore pile serves two purposes. The first provides a near impermeable boundary which aides greatly in the collection of the metal laden process solution. The second advantage to the flexible membrane is the almost non-permeable barrier to benefit increased environmental awareness that has led to an increase in solution containment technology. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a compatibility test for solutions and membrane liners. The EPA Method 9090 is intended for use in determining the chemical effects of a solution on the physical properties of the flexible membrane liner material intended to contain them. Data from these tests would assist in deciding whether a given liner material is acceptable for the intended application.

Waste blasting in iron ore operations can pose a number of technical challenges, including blasting through variable geology and blasting soft ground in wet conditions. Blast patterns are designed to be loaded with a specific range of explosives with unique characteristics and properties. Each explosive product will produce an optimal blast outcome for a given set of blast parameters and ground conditions. Sites characterised by softer rock typically require low-density, low-energy explosives. Historically, these products have contained a high ratio of porous ammonium nitrate prill and are only suitable for dry blastholes. When blastholes within a pattern are found to be unsuitable for such explosives due to wet, damp or muddy blasthole conditions, a new product is selected. While it is easy to switch products to match blasthole conditions, the different properties of the new non-ideal product can impact blast performance and increase loading times and costs.Flexigel™ is a solids-sensitised emulsion blend suitable for loading at variable densities and energies in dry, damp, muddy or wet blastholes. It is a universal product that can be loaded to match ground and blasthole conditions or complement other explosive products.At Fortescue Metals Group’s Cloudbreak site, Flexigel™ was trialled through a series of matched pair blasts in order to optimise blast outcomes in conditions that were non-ideal for existing explosive products and to reduce the overall cost of drill and blast operations. Flexigel™ yielded improved instantaneous dig rates and improved loading efficiency when compared to a traditional emulsion blend. The results also indicated that variable-density and variable-energy products afford greater flexibility for optimising blast outcomes across all ground and blasthole conditions trialled.Trials of Flexigel™ at Cloudbreak have shown that a variable-density solution is available for conditions where traditional explosive products are non-ideal. As such, Flexigel™ is able to fill a major void at any operation where the desired low-density, low-energy explosive product must be substituted for a more expensive traditional emulsion blend or heavy ammonium nitrate/fuel oil.CITATION:Andrew, D R, Morrison, K T and Tiedgen, J F, 2015. The property of the Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting Company, Limited is located at Flin Flon lake, 85 miles northwest of The Pas, Manitoba, on the Manitoba-Saskatchewan boundary. The area is at latitude North 54°, and is approximately 1,000 feet above sea level. The ore-body occurs in amygdaloidal greenstones, which are to be referred to the earliest basic volcanic flows in the district. It was discovered in an outcrop on a point of land jutting into Flin Flon lake, and subsequent diamond drilling proved that it extends under the lake both to the north and south of the point of discovery. After the taking of soundings from the ice during the winter months, it was estimated that l,000,000 tons of overburden, mainly mud and clay, would have to be removed to expose the underlying ore. Flat diamond-drill holes indicated that the ore-body was separated into more or less independent lenses by horses of unmineralized greenstone, and that in places the overall width, including horses of waste, reached 450 feet. These several] conditions were the main factors influencing the management in their decision to adopt an open-cut method for the mining of the upper portion of the ore-body. Before it was possible to commence stripping operations, it was necessary to dam-off the eastern portion of Flin Flon lake, instal pumps, and de-water the dammed-off area. Dams for this purpose were constructed of mine waste rock and clay filler from nearby hillsides. Material for the bottoms of the dams was taken across Flin Flon lake in hopper-bottom barges. Trestles were then built on the dam bottoms and dams were complete by the time trackage was available. De-watering commenced in April, 1930, and was completed by the latter part of May of the same year. Estimated pump output for the period was roughly four billion gallons. Two Morris 10-inch dredging pumps were used, direct-connected to 250 h.p. electric motors. Individual pump capacity was rated at 3,000 g.p.m. against a 150-foot head. Average head for the operation was 50 feet, which increased the total output considerably. The pumps were mounted on floating barges in cribbings of piling driven at the lowest points in the lake bottom.

The area between Merrygoen and Digilah is located on a structural high that separates the Sydney Basin from the Great Artesian Basin, and hence the stratigraphic succession of younger rocks overlying the basement is relatively thin. The stratigraphy is briefly described and it is shown that fluvial sedimentation prevailed from Upper Permian through to Middle Jurassic times. Flint clays occur in the Permian, Triassic and Jurassic but only those in the Jurassic appear to have commercial value at present. The chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of the flint clays are discussed.

Vale’s Sudbury Clarabelle Mill processes Cu/Ni ores from a number of mines in the Sudbury basin in Ontario, Canada. Bulk sulphide flotation produces a copper-nickel concentrate with pyrrhotite as the major diluent. After successful commissioning of the Voisey’s Bay Cu/Ni Mill (VBN) in Labrador, a miniplant campaign on Clarabelle ore with the VBN flow sheet produced a significant recovery improvement over current performance. In 2001, the Mill Redesign Project moved grinding energy into rock/sulphide and pentlandite/pyrrhotite separation and in 2006 Cu/Ni separation was re-introduced to Clarabelle Mill to produce a saleable Cu concentrate. The projects were a great success. What remained was to simplify the Clarabelle flow sheet by introducing the missing components found in the VBN flow sheet. This project known as CORe has evolved through many stages including the mining boom and surviving the 2008 economic downturn and it is scheduled for completion in mid 2013. This paper outlines some of the challenges faced in this major brownfields project – organizational, technical, financial and operational.

Variations in flotation rate by particle size and specific gravity have been investigated for three different bituminous coals. The flotation rates for various components were determined by separating the products of bulk flotation into size-specific gravity fractions. The effects of feed size and reagent addition on the flotation response of individual size-specific gravity fractions were evaluated.

The implementation of technological advancements in flotation is key to optimize performance in mining operations. Consequently, flotation cell’s performance is highly dependent on the effectiveness of the mixing mechanism. A more efficient flotation mixing mechanism is likely to improve metallurgical performance and optimize energy consumption, which is the motivation for Metso’s journey to develop the latest iteration of FloatForce®. Looking to test the new design at plant scale, Metso approached the Kennecott Copperton concentrator, which is continuously looking for different venues to improve metallurgical performance. In this context, a test campaign was conducted to implement this new flotation mixing mechanism in their rougher circuit during 2024. The industrial trial consisted of several sampling campaigns assessing different operational parameters for comparison purposes around a 300m3 flotation cell. The effect of the new flotation mixing mechanism on the cell’s power draw was also studied. The results of this trial at Kennecott are presented in this paper. Overall new flotation mixing mechanism, FloatForce+ was seen to perform as well as the original FloatForce.

A new kind of mixed chelate collector was prepared in order to separate gangue (mainly quartz) and iron minerals efficiently during room temperature. The collector was was composed of two chelate collectors DES and DA. Floatation tests were carried out under 28?C with mixed magnetic concentrates of Donganshan sintering plant, and optimal test conditions were obtained, in which a direct floatation was undertaken and then a close circuit reverse floatation tests ( one roughing, one cleaning, and two scavenging), and a result of Fe grade of siderite concentrate 36.49%, Fe recovery of siderite concentrate 10.65%, Fe grade of final concentrate 66.27%, Fe recovery of final concentrate 78.25%, and Fe grade of tailing 16.22% was gained. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectra and Zeta potential of siderite and quartz adsorbed the DES and DA collectors before and after were measured in order to analyze the reaction between the collector and minerals. Furthermore, Molecule electronegativity of DES and DA was calculated by Electronegativity Proportionality Principle (EPP). Results showed that DES molecules have five active adsorbing sites and their molecule electronegativity was stronger while DA molecules have three active adsorbing sites, which all make the mixed collector has efficiently collecting performance. Zeta potential results of Quartz and siderite showed that at pH 11.5 both kinds of particles charged negative and at this pH value the mixed collector were mainly anionic collectors which indicate that electrostatic adsorption does not exist at this situation. FTIR results showed that characteristic peaks of the mixed collector changed before and after adsorption with the minerals, which means that there exists chemical adsorption or hydrogen bonding.

It has been reported previously that dolomite samples from different locations showed varying flocculation behavior with Poly(ethyleneoxide) (PEO). In this study it is determined that palygorskite associated with the Florida dolomite samples is responsible for their flocculation with PEO. A detailed characterization of the dolomite samples from different locations and its relevance to flocculation with PEO is discussed.

Flocculation behaviour of six different dolomite samples, four from the Florida mining district, one from Perry, South Georgia and another from New Jersey was examined using polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a flocculant. The samples were similar in chemical composition, however the porosity of the samples from the Florida mining district was higher than the others. FT-IR, adsorption and surface modification by leaching revealed that flocculation was directly related to the presence of isolated hydroxyl groups on the surface. The adsorption mechanism was believed to be hydrogen bonding of the ether oxygen of PEO with isolated -OH sites on the solid.

An experimental study of the settling characteristics of a washery effluent originating as tailings from a froth flotation circuit was undertaken by using a systematic approach to select the most appropriate flocculant(s) under predetermined conditions. Selection and evaluation procedures which greatly reduce the effort required to select flocculants are described. The results show that, although different flocculants display superiority at different ranges of dosage. Separan MG 700 (Dow) is the most suitable on absolute economic grounds. Flocculant evaluation is based on a Cost Performance Index (CPI) which expresses the cost of flocculant (¢/ton) required to produce a unit settling rate (in./hr). From experiments carried out with a number of flocculant aid and flocculant combinations, it was concluded that the use of flocculant aids can be economically justified only if the settling rates required are higher than those obtainable at the optimum flocculant dosage. Otherwise, the value of the flocculant aid appears to be limited largely to the reduction of supernatant turbidity.

THIS REPORT covers the third in a series of five projects into which the Conowingo tunnel system has been divided for geographical and practical reasons. It outlines the work constituting Project No.3 that consists principally of the following: (a) To sink the No. 15 shaft and extend the Alden, Sugar Notch, Baltimore No.2, and Laflin shafts from their present depths to tunnel level; (b) to drive a tunnel off these shafts to connect with the western end of the tunnel in Project No.1 (Lackawanna) and to a point 1 mile south of the No. 15 shaft; (c) to construct an emergency pumping plant at the No. 15 shaft, complete with 3 centrifugal pumps of 200-cubic-foot-per-second (c. f. s.) capacity each, and a discharge-water shaft and a discharge tunnel for conducting the water from the pumping plant into the Susquehanna River; and (d) to construct a lateral tunnel 1 mile long off the main tunnel in the vicinity of the No. 15 shaft, to be known as the Wyoming lateral. The project, as outlined, is a self-contained drainage unit that will permit unwatering inundated mines and safeguarding active mines in the Wyoming Basin of the Northern field and also will handle the water in the Lackawanna Basin, thus permitting the temporary pumping plant provided in Project No.1 to be discontinued. The pumps installed in the temporary pumping plant provided in Project No.1 can then be moved to the emergency pumping plants recommended in Projects Nos. 2 and 3, to be installed as the third or standby unit.

THIS REPORT covers the second in a series of five projects into which the Conowingo tunnel system has been divided for geographical and practical reasons. It outlines the construction work contemplated-to sink two shafts on the line of the main tunnel that are designated the Nos. 9A and 11 shafts, to turn off from the No. 9A shaft the Lansford and Lykens laterals, and to drive portions of the main tunnel. An emergency pumping plant, consisting of 2 separate pumprooms, each containing 3 horizontal-type centrifugal pumps of 100,000-gallons-per-minute (g. p. m.) capacity, will be constructed at the No. 9A shaft. From the No. 11 shaft will be turned off the Trevorton lateral and portions of the main tunnel, which will connect with the section driven from the No. 9A shaft. Under the proposed project, the Lansford lateral will be driven for a distance of 2 miles, the Lykens lateral for a distance of 10.56 miles, and the Trevorton lateral for a distance of 20 miles. To drive the Lykens and Trevorton laterals for the distance indicated, several construction shafts and slopes must be sunk to permit efficient and safe construction.

New York City is a busy metropolis with 8 million people. New York has the largest public transportation system with 6 million riders a day throughout the subway system. Keeping this infrastructure in service is vital to the overall economy of the region. Hurricane Sandy proved to have a devastating impact on infrastructure in Metropolitan New York. New York City Transit is on the forefront to provide resiliency and maintain its facilities with the use of flood protection systems. This paper presents flood protection structures utilized at Hammels Wye substation site in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York. The site is in close proximity and surrounded by water. The subsurface conditions consist of loose silts overlain by medium dense glacial sand. The high groundwater level combined with limited access to the site presented challenges. A flood protection system consisting of flood walls was recommended for this site. In certain areas the flood walls consisted of retaining walls supported on micropiles. For other areas, the flood walls consisted of steel sheet piles with jet grout columns to reduce seepage below the walls. The effect of driving sheet piles with vibratory hammers on nearby existing structures is always a concern. Recently, hydraulic hammers with variable moment/frequency are being considered as a mean to reduce vibration effects during driving. In this project, an instrumentation testing program was performed to measure peak particle velocity during sheet pile driving utilizing the variable moment vibratory hammer. Plots of peak particle velocity versus frequency were generated. This paper will present the design aspects of the flood walls and construction challenges during installation. This will prove beneficial to engineers in both design and construction fields.

The Folsom Area Stormwater Improvement Project is part of SFPUC’s flood resilience efforts under the Sewer System Improvement Program. This 4,000-foot-long, 12-footinside- diameter tunnel will help reduce the risk of flooding in San Francisco’s low-lying Inner Mission neighborhood. The project is in a high seismic hazard zone and extends through a complex geologic corridor that includes full-face soft, compressible Bay Mud, Colma Sands, and full-face rock with several stretches of mixed-face conditions. Additional challenges include removal of 99 piles beneath an existing box sewer, tunneling under commuter rail tracks, and an underground tie-in. This paper examines these challenges and how they are being addressed.

During 1996 and 1997, Oregon experienced flooding on a scale not seen in many years. Some gravel pits located near rivers experienced erosion. In several cases, breaches occurred between the gravel pit and the river. Initial evaluation of several sites that experienced these breaches showed that impacts to the river system were complex and varied significantly from site to site. The impacts to the adjacent river system may be viewed as positive and negative. Several flood-plain-mining sites in Oregon located in areas of historic river flow reverted to active riverbeds. In many cases, state and federal fisheries biologists and university researchers saw the resulting increase in channel complexity and habitat as favorable. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries —Mined Land Reclamation Program (DOGAMI-MLR) is studying the effects to the off-channel areas that resulted from the 1996 floods. More data is needed to make sound flood-plain decisions regarding mining.
