The knowledge-based expert systems (KBES) is a potentially powerful technique to the mining engineer in traditional areas of mine design and operations, as well as in the emerging areas of mining automation and robotics. Since KBES is still experimental in many respects, caution must be exercised as this "high tech" tool is developed and applied to mining. The objective of this paper is to demystify expert systems by introducing the elements of KBES, discussing the strengths and weaknesses, and identifying some areas of application in mining, based on the authors' experiences.

"SGS implemented two rules-based fuzzy logic expert applications on two grinding circuits operated by Peñoles Group in Mexico. Both expert systems are based on control strategies that push against process constraints to improve throughput. Based on proven methodologies, the projects also required some new approaches that led to permanent changes to the mill control strategy.This paper provides descriptions of the implementation, operation and performance of both expert systems. It also reviews how improved production rates were achieved through the use of a common set of expert technology tools. An overview of the resulting control strategies implemented on the two circuits is presented. The paper also discusses the identification of the process constraints within each circuit and how these constraints are used within the expert systems.INTRODUCTIONMexico-based mining company Peñoles Group and the Advanced Systems group at SGS, formally known as MinnovEX Technologies Inc., collaborated on the implementation of two expert systems in two grinding plants, both located in Northern Mexico.The primary objective of the expert systems was to increase throughput whilst still maintaining the cyclone overflow product size within an acceptable range. The secondary objective was to achieve a high level of utilisation of the expert technology.In order to achieve these objectives, SGS proposed a proven methodology which leveraged the existing operating and technical expertise at site through the client’s involvement in the design and implementation stages. The in-house operating and technical expertise of SGS was also brought to the project and implemented with the client’s approval at all stages. At both sites the final acceptance was defined upon meeting both process and utilization parameters.The development and deployment of rules-based fuzzy logic applications has matured as a technology and consequently, clear definition of process states and their place in the logic structure to control a given circuit are now transferable. The key to the robustness of the control logic depends on selection and tuning rules for maintaining stability and optimizing a given circuit. Application integrators need to have a standardized approach for timely integration and deployment; a critical component to avoid the common critiques that expert applications are idiosyncratic and difficult to maintain."

There is a large preoccupation concerning the development of expert tools (ET) in the mining industry, in order to minimize the impact from waste dumps and processing residues on the environment. In this paper, the authors present a new approach for the development of an expert tool for each area under study, in order to minimize production and disposal of mining wastes on the environment, by taking into account the DKRControl method as well as the Ecomining principles, regarding among others hazard identification, impacts and monitoring. Due to the complexity of this topic a reliable ET requires input from a number of interested stakeholders. The design and management of a mining waste disposal site over its entire life cycle is also considered very important.

In a visionary move, the Planning Commission and the Ministry for Planning in Western Australia decided to invite three extractive industry quarry operators, local government councils and State Government departments (Minerals and Energy, Environmental Protection, South West Development Commission) to contribute jointly to study the impacts of blasting on areas surrounding basalt quarries in the Bunbury region of WA. The results of the study will help establish suitable zones in which land uses will be controlled under a proposed Greater Bunbury Region Scheme and in local planning schemes, to minimise conflicting land uses. This paper discusses the blasting program conducted to characterise and model the vibration behaviour of the rock under the effects of pilot-scale and full production blasting, and highlights some of the benefits achievable when a thorough blasting impact program and assessment is conducted at the planning stages of land-use establishment.

Entre 1983 et 1997, l'exploitation de la pierre de taille au Québec a été marquée par l'émergence et la consolidation de plusieurs nouvelles variétés de granit, provenant exclusivement ou presque de la Province de Grenville. Le Québec demeure toujours le principal expéditeur canadien de granit dimensionnel, avec des expéditions annuelles représentant près de quatre-vingt-dix pour cent des expéditions totales canadiennes de granit brut et transformé. La production annuelle de granit brut oscille, depuis 1994, autour de cent mille tonnes métriques. Cette production a plus que doublé de 63 000 à 140 000 tonnes métriques entre 1981 et 1990, mais elle a connu une chute importante en 1991 (67 000 tonnes métriques); cependant depuis 1994, elle est en forte progression (Ménard, 1998). En 1983, le granit dimensionnel était extrait de plus de vingt-cinq carrières, dont les trois quarts se localisaient dans la Province géologique de Grenville. Comparativement, en 1997, le Québec comptait trente-sept carrières actives, dont trente-cinq dans le Grenville (Gaudreau et al., 1998). Cette concentration des carrières dans la Province de Grenville s'explique par la demande accrue de nouveaux produits au fil des ans et par le potentiel élevé de découvertes de nouvelles variétés dans cette Province géologique. L'accessibilité au territoire, toujours plus grande, a facilité la mise en production de carrières favorisant la diversification des produits. Le ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec (MRNQ) a consacré depuis 1980, beaucoup d'efforts dans la recherche de nouveaux gisements et de nouvelles variétés. En plus des programmes de subvention destinés aux prospecteurs ou aux compagnies, le ministère a réalisé des campagnes d'inventaire de pierre de taille, de pierre concassée et de pierre d'enrochement pour en connaître le potentiel géologique et à orienter les recherches futures (Nantel, 1983; Nantel et Martignole, 1991; Bellemare, 1995a, b, c, d, e, f, 1997, 1998a and b; Bellemare et Petryk, 1996a, b, c and d). Cette étude donne un aperçu des différentes variétés de pierres extraites dans la Province de Grenville entre 1983 et 1997, les situe dans leur contexte géologique et en localise les principales régions productrices. Orebodies occur in an infinite variety of grades, shapes and sizes, and take many millions of years to grow. When extraction starts there is only one possible end -the mine sooner or later will run out of ore and shut down. If the mineral industry is to supply the ever increasing demands of modern civilizations, more and more metals must be found and mined. This will require a never-ending search for ore, and the development of every economic body, large or small. To justify the mining of a small orebody, it first of all must pay its way. If the size of the burden imposed by the capital cost estimates is not carefully worked out, an otherwise promising situation could be killed. The very nature of mining, as a transient industry, re-leases a steady stream of good used equipment, and the trained personnel to install and operate it. All manner of plans and layouts, which can be utilized at a new property, are available. Working these and other economies into the estimates will sometimes make enough difference to give a prospect the green light.

Several productive areas in the Mid-Con-tinent are broadly and briefly examined with respect to the present depth of drilling on productive structures, and the thickness of sediments remaining untested. Evidence is offered to show that a vertical mile to two miles of untested but prospective formation remain within reach of the drill. In no case would a well deeper than 15,000 ft. be required, and in most cases to no greater depth than 10,000 ft. Recent outstanding success of deeper prospecting in West Texas demonstrates the merits of deeper drilling on known structure. Introduction New fields discoverd during I942 equaled or exceeded the number in any preceding year. The total amount of oil found by these discoveries was less than in any previous year, for which accurate records are available. This means that the pools now being discovered are much smaller than in past years. This is to be expected, since the prospects available during 1942 were largely those overlooked in the earlier years and therefore represent a second or third order (in quality) of structural feature. This failure to find pools of good size and quality raises grave doubt as to the security of our future oil supply. With military needs rising almost daily, and the period of heaviest con- sumption in our war effort still in the future, there is even a growing doubt as to our ability to supply the amount needed for our ultimate victory. This does not mean that our reserves are inadequate, but rather that our "capacity to produce" may be inadequate. Lacking large fields with flush production, our capacity to produce is rapidly approaching our current needs. ,Since the industry is unable to find the large new fields necessary to keep a safe margin of "capacity to produce," other means are needed. It seems obvious that one of these should be deeper prospecting on the large, proven, productive structural features now known. The exploratory wildcat is drilled primarily in search of a trap and the reason for failure to find oil and gas in nine out of ten cases is due to the absence of a suitable trap under the drill site. Therefore, deeper drilling on a known structural feature that is productive largely eliminates the greatest hazard in wildcat drilling. While by no means all the oil known today is found in structural traps—in fact, some have estimated that less than half is so located— the fact remains that structural traps are far more commonly the oil fields that have multiple horizons of production superimposed one over the other. Outstanding examples are the Eldorado field in Kansas, the Tonkawa and Cushing fields in Oklahoma, the Louden and Salem pools of Illinois, and the richest and most prolific of all structural traps, the Long Beach, Ven-tura and other similar fields of California.

As knowledgeable men in the industry know, a mineral occurrence is found through prospecting but an ore deposit is "made" -made through, first, imaginative and effective exploration; thence through efficient engineering, sales and management. There are two main phases of exploration-reconnaissance and target investigation-each of which can be further divided into two additional stages (see accompanying table). The search for a new ore deposit within a known and geologically mapped mining district involves only the last two stages, whereas the search for a new orebody in a virgin geologic environment involves at least three stages and often the full sequence. Of course, some of the exploration stages may be bypassed depending on available results of previous mineral surveys and/or exploration by individuals, business concerns, and governments.

Several factors contributed to continued declines in mineral-exploration activity in the US in 1985. Low metal prices and, what appears to be worldwide chronic excess capacity in copper, molybdenum, lead, and uranium, have resulted in mineral-exploration expenditures remaining anemic. Economic recovery could result in a healthier mining industry and more cash flow to fund exploration. This is because general economic activity and US mining industry activity have historically been closely linked. However, as the worldwide economic recovery has expanded, the mining sector has continued its downward slide. New cuts in industry exploration budgets in 1985 shocked those who thought the exploration situation could not become worse. Some personnel and equipment had been redirected from base metals exploration to precious metals in the past few years. Last year, continued reductions in exploration sent many professionals out of the mining industry. Recent staff reductions or consolidations of operations were made by Noranda, Chevron, Molycorp, and other exploration companies. The latest data from the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) summary of exploration statistics show that professional staff at year end in major US exploration companies (domestic and foreign operations) fell from 2355 in 1981 to 1868 in 1983 and 1277 in 1984. By the end of 1985, two economic trends were established that could improve the future profitability of mining and hence exploration. First, the price of crude oil began a decline. If sharply reduced energy prices increase worldwide economic expansion, the substantial excess capacity in some of the base metals industries could disappear, and prices could improve. Furthermore, if energy price declines reduce mining and processing costs significantly, metals may recapture some lost markets. The decline in oil revenues has already encouraged some oil-producing countries, such as Venezuela, to look toward development of mineral resources to earn foreign exchange for debt repayment. Second, the decline of the dollar by 21% during 1985 could also help US producers meet foreign competition. During 1985, industry restructuring continued as many oil companies sold off mining subsidiaries and minerals properties. Gold, silver in new discoveries Precious metals continued to dominate the announcement of new discoveries and exploration projects in 1985. A review of domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals shows that 60% to 80% of these projects were directed primarily at precious metals, particularly gold. Base metals exploration activities frequently involved polymetallic deposits with gold or silver values. Because much of this exploration was done on identified targets (on-property exploration), the decrease in wildcat or grassroots (off-property) exploration may be more substantial than indicated by reductions in total exploration activity. Significant gold discoveries in 1985 included several in Nevada, among them the Genesis property of Newmont (near the Carlin mine), Goldfields' discovery of the Chimney deposit in Humboldt Co., and Freeport's discovery of two mineralized sites near Jerritt Canyon. Gold exploration continued to be focused in the western US and Alaska, but gold production starts at the Haile mine in South Carolina, and the Ropes mine in Michigan as well as Amselco's feasibility studies on deposits near Ridgeway, SC, are evidence that gold exploration is not limited to the West. The dominance of gold projects in exploration is not limited to the US, as demonstrated by gold dis¬coveries and exploration projects in Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Caribbean region, China, Guinea, Ivory Coast, South Africa, the South Pacific islands, and Thailand. From the standpoint of US metal miners, it is perplexing that worldwide exploration and development is also taking place in copper, zinc, tungsten, and other metals with depressed prices. During 1985, the US Geological Survey's efforts to map the sea floor of the Exclusive Economic Zone shifted from the Pacific Coast to the deep water areas of the Gulf of Mexico and to areas off the coast of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. An atlas containing sea-floor maps of the west coast area was published as US Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations Series Map 1-1792. Results of the 1985 surveys are expected to be published by January 1987. Exploration trends - Statistical evidence Data from the SEG showed continued decline in the US mining industry's exploration expenditures through 1984. The share of US companies' domestic exploration expenditures directed toward base and precious metals has increased from 51% to 84% from 1980 to 1983 and to 86% in 1984. US mining companies spent about $0.67 of each exploration dollar in 1984 in the US. However, this represents an increase from earlier years. The 1983 data also show that firms spending more than $5 million on exploration accounted for 77% of exploration expenditures. Kimberlites and associated diamonds have been the focus of extensive exploration in central Saskatchewan since 1988. During 1989, Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited identified 71 shallow magnetic anomalies in the Fort a la Corne area from detailed aeromagnetic surveys. By the end of 1991, 18 of these targets had been proven, by drilling, to be kimberlite bodies encased within Cretaceous sedimentary strata. From 1991 to 1997, the number of drill-confirmed kimberlite bodies increased to 69. Our current view, drawing on an integration of geophysical and geological information, is that the kimberlites are composed of individual bodies and multi-vent clusters of coalesced bodies, all apparently constructed of stacked, temporally distinct layers of pyroclastic crater-facies kimberlite. Diamond recoveries and geochemical results from associated heavy minerals at Fort a la Corne remain highly variable, although continued minibulk sampling is expected to improve the estimation of diamond grades for the most prospective bodies.

In the first 20 years of the 21st century, just over 20 per cent of Australian mineral exploration expenditure was dedicated to iron ore, totalling >A$8 billion and >30 million metres of drilling (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2021). Improvements in the cost, efficiency, safety, reliability and data quality of drilling have the potential to deliver significant productivity improvements, increasing the probability of discovery and reducing the time from discovery to mining. Currently in its third year of research, Mineral Exploration Cooperative Research Centre (MinEx CRC) is focused on a new set of exploration tools and new ways to deploy those tools which recognise the fundamental importance of collecting quantity and quality data from the subsurface, to enable exploration success for all minerals, including iron ore. MinEx CRC is focused on developing more productive, safer and environmentally friendly drilling methods to discover and drill-out deposits. This includes pioneering work on Coil Tube (CT) drilling technology and innovations in Diamond and Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling techniques aimed at improved drilling optimisation and automation. In parallel, MinEx is developing new technologies for collecting data whilst drilling. This is being undertaken in four separate industry-led projects utilising geophysical, seismic, downhole analytical and 3-dimensional (3D) modelling improvements. A National Drilling Initiative (NDI) is also underway, with two drilling programs completed in 2020. The NDI is a world-first collaboration of Geological Surveys, researchers and industry, which undertakes drilling in under-explored areas of potential mineral wealth in Australia and provides a test-bed for new mineral exploration technologies.

"Common properties of commercial geothermal steam reservoirs are a magmatic heat source, the presence of water in vapour and liquid phases, and a surrounding seal of low permeability. The latter may be due to a combination of hydrologic load, argillic alteration and mineral precipitates. The temperature and pressure of vapour and liquid co-existing in equilibrium at maximum enthalpy may approximate 451°F and 450 psi. Steam reservoirs do not necessarily vent steam, but fluid which breaches and mixes with meteoric waters may emerge as hot springs. A systematic exploration program in Western Canada would involve a sequence of four stages utilizing geological, geochemical and geophysical techniques. The geochemical parameters of hot spring waters, such as silica, lithium and potassium content, give some indication of the basic reservoir temperature. The geology of Quaternary volcanics, including reservoir rocks, structure and rock alteration, is of prime importance. The costs of preliminary indirect methods are no more than those of oil and gas exploration; however, high temperatures compound drilling problems and costs. Exploration expenditures of twenty million dollars or so might be needed for a significant discovery. British Columbia and the Yukon Territory contain abundant Cenozoic volcanic rocks and over 50 thermal spring complexes (some with as many as 20 springs in one complex). Six regions are tentatively picked for exploration. Four regions coincide geographically with post-1980 electric power facilities and loads, and with possible alternatives such as potential dam sites. The Lillooet River region, Terrace region and Western Vancouver Island region have inferred potential for the existence of a plus-500-Mw geothermal reservoir. The Kootenay region may or may not have such potential. The Stikine River region has strong evidence of geothermal endowment, but the anticipated power market of the middle future might be only 30-50 Mw. The Whitehorse, Y.T., and Atlin, B.C., region has a belt of thermal springs and Recent cinder cones. The anticipated middle-future needs are real enough, but in absolute terms they are small, say 20-30 Mw. Legislation and policy on geothermal resource rights are lacking in British Columbia and the Yukon Territory at this time. As well as making policy, governmental organizations will play a significant role in geothermal development as buyers of steam or electricity. The role of industry is visualized as assuming the high-cost and high-risk exploration effort, provided the nature of this effort is understood by government."

The Goodall gold mine is located 30 km east of Adelaide River, within the Pine Creek 1:250 000 map sheet, at 8 525 000 mN: 750 000 mE, on the AMG grid. The first gold was poured in April 1988 and the mine closed in September 1993, having produced 228 400 ounces of gold from 4.095 million tons of ore, at a head grade of 1.99 g/t. Oxide and primary ore was mined from one large open cut and low grade oxide ore from three smaller pits. The gold mineralisation was discovered in 1981 by means of a helicopter borne rock chip sampling survey, which delineated 13 discrete anomalies. Systematic grid sampling of rock chips outlined an area of 1300 m by 300 m within the 2.0 g/t contour. Over 7500 m of costeaning was used to delineate the A and B-Pod mineralised areas. Geochemical soil sampling played only a minor role in the discovery and geophysics none at all. By the end of 1984, 40 diamond drill holes had been completed and a resource of 3.63 million tonnes at 3.0 g/t calculated. In January 1985, Western Mining Corporation Ltd became a joint venture partner and funded exploration to cam a 60 per cent interest. Additional drilling led to a feasibility study in 1987, based on a Measured and Indicated resource of 4.25 million tonnes at a grade of 2.35 g/t. The host rocks are quartzo-feldspathic wacke and interbedded phyllitic siltstone, of the Proterozoic Burrell Creek formation. The main zone of gold mineralisation, A-Pod, occurs in a sub-vertical vein array, up to 50 m wide and 800 m in length, of quartz and sulphide veins (5-20 mm wide), It is parallel to and on the east limb of an upright, north plunging anticline. Five types of veining have been recognised, with the bulk of the gold mineralisation associated with quartz-pyrite-arsenopyrite and chlorite-quartz-pyrite veins. The gold occurs as particles, from 1-20 micron, as inclusions and along fractures in pyrite and arsenopyrite and to a limited extent in chlorite. The mineralisation is epigenetic and structurally controlled by fractures developed during an earlier folding event. The gold is assumed to have been derived from the underlying sediments of the Koolpin Formation by hydrothermal fluids emanating from the deep seated northern margin of the Cullen Batholith. Precipitation of gold may have been controlled by variations in temperature and pressure.

"Quartz Hill is a large, low- to moderate-grade quartz vein stockwork porphyry molybdenum deposit, discovered in 1974 during a regional stream sediment geochemical reconnaissance survey of southeast Alaska conducted by United States Borax and Chemical Corporation. Mineralization is localized in the upper parts of an Upper Oligocene (30 Ma) composite quartz monzonite stock which is emplaced discordantly into older Cretaceous to Early Tertiary terrain of the Coast Range igneous metamorphic complex of the northwest North American Cordillera. Subsequent fault-controlled, complex multi-stage intrusion, concentrated in the core of the Quartz Hill stock, produced successive pulses of hydrothermal alteration and molybdenum mineralization at about 27 Ma. Overall, the deposit is tabular and flat-lying and well suited to open pit mining. The 0.05% MoS2 grade limit covers an area of approximately 1500 m by 2750 m and extends to a maximum depth of 520 m below surface. Details of grade distribution show two separate lobes of higher grade material within the larger low-grade deposit.A ten year program of exploration drilling, underground development, sampling and metallurgical testwork led to a 1983 feasibility study based on a resource of 1600 million tonnes grading 0.127% MoS2 at a 0.08% MoS2 cutoff The large size of the deposit and its homogeneous grade distribution, typically showing gradual outward decrease of grade, makes in pit grade selection practical at several cutoff levels. Cominco Ltd. now reports a Probable Resource of 210 million tonnes averaging 0.22% MoS2 with a further Possible Resource of 1100 million tonnes averaging 0.12% MoS:z. At low molybdenum metal prices which have persisted for 10 years since the molybdenum price spike of the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Quartz Hill deposit is sub-economic."

The 2 Moz Vogue mineral resource is a recent discovery at the Sunrise Dam gold mine (SDGM), lying approximately 600 m vertically below the Sunrise Dam open pit. Unlike most other lodes, which are dominated either by steep vein sets or shallow high-strain (shear) zones, it lies broadly in the hinge of a folded felsic porphyry body, where it cuts intermediate volcanic lavas and volcaniclastic rocks and is not specifically concentrated at a lithofacies contact. The mineralisation is controlled by a complex interplay of moderate to shallow, west-dipping high-strain zones that are transected by irregular and discontinuous high-grade, north-west-, north–south- and east–west-trending breccia sheets that initially caused problems with attempts to model broad domains. However, by combining the structural controls and styles with the distribution of gold, arsenic, sulfur and antimony, we have improved opportunities for scheduling, extracting and processing the most appropriate material considering the current mining and processing constraints.The early delineation process for the Vogue lode revealed a significant mineral resource for the SDGM, coupled with the recognition of some potentially difficult downstream implications for mining and processing. The ultimate success of mining at Vogue will be a consequence of combining standardised data collection and geological modelling techniques with the results of the novel innovative techniques applied at an early stage of the project.Innovation (in the truest sense) drives change and application to deliver efficient and effective outcomes. Initial data generation and interpretation in lodes above Vogue provided a sound geological model based on strong structural foundations, leading to ideas that could be tested and validated by stress inversion analysis and modelling simulations. Geomechanical modelling simulations, based on the structural analysis, then provided an insight into both the structural and fluid evolution of the system and highlighted target areas. This promoted support for deeper drilling and sampling, which lead to the discovery of Vogue.With additional data, the structural model for Vogue was re-engineered through combination with geochemical and hyperspectral analysis and detailed geological and geostatistical domaining. Initial poor results from metallurgical tests from a small batch sample refocused efforts to undertake mineral and chemical characterisation and profiling (geometallurgy) and combine this data with the composite geological-structural-geochemical model. Due to their ability to produce high-resolution images of the subsurface to great depths, seismic surveys provide critical inputs to almost all oil and gas exploration projects. However, with some notable exceptions, seismic surveys have rarely been used in mineral exploration. In the past, this was due to both technical and financial reasons. Significant developments on both fronts mean that seismic surveys can now offer substantial benefits to mineral exploration and mining, and surveys conducted for exploration can provide important data sets for mine planning over the life of a mining project.We present case history data that show that seismic surveys can greatly assist with mapping the 3D distribution of lithologies and alteration and, in favourable circumstances, directly detect mineralisation in and around mineral systems. As a result of their high spatial sampling density, seismic surveys are also highly effective at mapping structures that can remain undetected or poorly characterised by drilling alone. These structures may host or provide important vectors to mineralisation. They can also be particularly important when planning shafts, raise bores, declines, stopes and open pit walls. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Mineral exploration and mining are challenging businesses. Remote and at times harsh conditions have always made it difficult for exploration, but modern explorers also have to deal with cover, numerous technologies, an explosion of data and critical early community engagement. Mining deals with the reality of moving and breaking thousands of tonnes of rock each day to extract what can be a very minor component of economic value, and, furthermore, society expects that this will be done in a clean and sustainable manner. The exploration and mining challenges appear disparate, but they are intimately related.Although not widely appreciated, both exploration and mining have a long tradition of innovation. Over the last 50 years, major step changes in exploration have resulted from radical advances in our understanding of ore forming processes, new geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing technologies, and new ways to integrate and interrogate data. Over a more extended period, close to 100 years, mining has developed bulk surface and underground methods, selective extraction through flotation and leaching and global positioning system–geographic information system control systems that collectively facilitate mining at a massive scale. And yet, in spite of these successes and the boom that we have enjoyed in the last ten years, the industry is under pressure and the need for innovation and change is paramount.The major drivers for innovation are the need for increased quality in discoveries and mines and the need to interact effectively with communities and jurisdictions such that the benefits of quality mines are recognised and enjoyed widely.We are still making new discoveries around the Pacific Rim and elsewhere, but many argue that the quality – grade and accessibility – of these discoveries is decreasing. The net result is that explorers are delivering resources and reserves for development at lower grades and with higher capital and operating costs than current operations. For mining, the increasing age of many existing operations contributes to increasing costs, which, when combined with decreasing cut-offs and lower grades, also results in declining quality. The combined picture does not look good.Just as the pressure to improve performance and margins in the face of declining inputs increases, we are simultaneously faced with increasing societal demands for improved environmental performance and sustainable practices. This is most apparent at the local, community level, where opposition ultimately leads to delays or even cancellation of new projects. Quality is again the issue – quality of the initial and ongoing engagement and quality of the proposed mine in terms of environmental and economic performance.CITATION:Thompson, J F H, 2015. The Goondicum Crater industrial minerals deposit is located about 30 km east of Monto, Central Queensland, Australia. Early exploration programs in the 1990s found alluvial ilmenite along the banks of the Burnett River. This mineralisation was traced upstream to the Goondicum Crater. The Goondicum Crater is a topographic feature centred on a roughly circular 6 km diameter layered gabbro complex. Significant ilmenite, apatite, titano-magnetite and feldspar mineralisation are present in a weathered horizon up to 25 m thick. After several drilling campaigns in the Crater and subsequent feasibility studies, the project was developed by Monto Minerals Ltd, an ASX listed company, in 2007. However, the project never achieved production performance expectations and ran out of commissioning funds. The company subsequently went into voluntary administration in August 2008.In 2009, the RMM Capital group, of Brisbane, took control of Monto Resources Pty Ltd, and renamed the company Belridge Enterprises Pty Ltd (Belridge). Belridge commissioned a redevelopment study aimed at recommencing mining and processing operations. As part of the redevelopment study the authors planned a drilling campaign, managed a quality control program and developed a block model. This paper describes the drilling program, analytical procedures, quality control procedures and the preparation of the block model.The block model for the resource estimate was created using 1 m high blocks, wireframes defining the main material types, and 2.5 m thick horizontal search ellipsoids with a radial pattern. The deposit was ‘flattened’ prior to modelling. To assist with the economic evaluation of the project, each block in the model was assigned a net dollar value based on economic parameters provided by Belridge, including anticipated revenues and costs. This modelling technique allowed for efficient investigation of various scenarios and was used extensively in the development and optimisation of the project’s financial model. At a zero net value per block, comparable to a break-even cut-off grade of four per cent ilmenite equivalent, the Indicated plus Measured resource is estimated at 51 Mt, averaging 4.1 per cent ilmenite, 1.9 per cent apatite and 2.5 per cent titano-magnetite.
