A 3800 m long temporary water-retaining dike has been constructed under extreme conditions in the harsh northern climate to enable two of the kimberiite pipes at the Diavik Diamond Project reserve to be mined using open pits. The Diavik Diamond Project is located on East Island at Lac de Gras in Canada's Northwest Territories, approximately 200 kilometres south of the Arctic Circle. The dike which has been constructed in up to 25 m deep water from crushed granite quarried from the site projects into Lac de Gras encircles the first two of the kimberiite pipes to be mined. An 800 mm wide diaphragm cut­off wall constructed of bentonite, cement and crushed rock, totalling 33,000 m2, and a two-phase jet grouted curtain wail at its base, totalling 8,400 m2, have been installed through the dike and underlying till foundation into bedrock. The cut-off is designed to minimise water seepage from Lac de Gras through the dike. In order to ensure that the dike had adequate internal stability and diaphragm wall construction could proceed safely, the crushed rock fill material dumped into the lake was first compacted by TR 75 deep vibrators. In 2000, Bauer Maschinen GmbH of Schrobenhausen, Germany were awarded the contract for the supply of all specialist foundation equipment required on site and for providing technical support to the Canadian main contractor Lac-de-Gras-Construction throughout the construction of the cut-off walls during 2001 and 2002. Installation of the cut-off walls was completed in July 2002, three weeks ahead of schedule, and dewatering of the inner dike areas commenced just 5 days later and has continued throughout August and September. After completion of extensive testing of the diamond recovery plant, the mine is scheduled to go into full open pit production in February 2003.

"The use of cut-off-walls (COW) for the open pit coal mines has been used for decades. They have been used to reduce the negative hydraulic impact to the surrounding area caused by the open pit mining. The pile-guided trench cutting system is a worldwide unique technique, originally developed by the engineers of the mining companies themselves. It guarantees a continuous, joint free, COW during a continuous installation process. At this specific site in Welzow, this technique has been pushed to new limits in order to address the local lake region. Depth capability has been designed to about 430 ft (130m), proven are already depth of about 360 ft (110m) at a constant trench width of 39 inch (1000 mm). This project is approximately. 6.8 miles (11 km) long of COW, scheduled to be completed in 12 years period. About 2.05 miles (3.3km) have been installed, which is equivalent of about 3.5 Million ft² (330,000 m²). The system flushes special clay which forms a filter crust at the inner surface of the trench. Only natural clay resources used, in order to achieve the cut-off effect (colmation effect). The paper explains the installation process of the cut-off-wall as well as the equipment systems developed specifically for this project. After a successful start of the first phase of the project, the next step in the advancement of the equipment is already underway to enable the installation of greater depth to approximately 490 ft (150 m +) and beyond. The next generation equipment system is scheduled to start operation around 2018 INTRODUCTIONThis Serbian saying “Bóh je stworil Lužicu a cert je zaryl brunicu – God created Lusatia and the devil buried brown coal underneath it.” captures local communities’ ambivalence towards lignite.Lusatia is an almost entirely flat stretch of land between the Elbe and Neiße rivers dominated by glacial sands. On the surface, the heathland and woodland is hardly noteworthy. However, three large lignite mining regions, two in Brandenburg and one in Saxony, in the east part of Germany, divert the attention to underground level, down to depths of up to 120 meters. Here, seams crisscross the earth like ribbons. They were formed in the Tertiary around 17 million years ago.The mining of the lignite started almost 200 years ago. To enable open pit mining, a suitable dewatering system was required. At first, wells and drainage system were used. With the increasing demand to go deeper to enable full use of the existing resources with greater mining depth, a decision taken back in the 60th of the last century, the amount of water which had to be pumped increased dramatically. In peak times, approx. 1.57 Billion cubic yards per year (1.2 Billion m³/year) had to be pumped. This led to a lowering of the groundwater level for up to 230 ft (70 m), impacting the regional lake landscape. In order to reduce the influence on the water balance, and bring the water level back to pre1970th, a first development took place to implement the use of specific COW system to depth of about 147 ft (45m)."

"Cutoff walls are frequently used to slow down or prevent seepage of water through and/or around dams. Cutoff wall is a type of seepage barrier structure designed to reduce the flow of water underneath temporary or main dam. There are number of techniques for the construction of cutoff walls including concrete, Jet grouting and permeation grouting. NHPC LTD, a premier Govt. of India undertaking has been instrumental in the hydropower development within the country & in nearby countries like Nepal & Bhutan since last four decades. NHPC LTD has completed more than 20 hydro-electric projects with total installed capacity of 6587MW (including capacity addition by JV- NHDC). In all these projects, different types of dams and spillways were constructed in not so benign to extreme challenging geological set up. There has always been challenge associated with the temporary diversion works. The project sites sometimes incur huge river bed excavations in case of concrete gravity dam founded on rock foundation at large depth. The challenges for minimizing the seepage have been well taken care by constructing the dedicated seepage barriers. The construction of cut-off walls have progressed from “conventional continuous trench backfilled with conventional concrete or plastic concrete” to “grout curtain”, to “jet grouting” to the “concrete cut-off wall” , the last being the most sophisticated & credible seepage barrier.The efficiency of the cut-off walls are monitored by the seepage quantity observed (reduction of the seepage flow), uplift pressures or exit gradients after construction of cut-off walls. For construction of the main concrete dam, required space is created by the river bed excavation for placing the dam foundation on sound rock. Sometimes there is deep river bed excavation from 30 to 40 m depth or even more as per the available rock profile. Temporary coffer dams are constructed for diverting the river flow through diversion tunnels / channels etc. In deep river bed excavation; there are high chances of the significant seepage through the coffer dam foundation / river bed material due to high hydraulic gradients. Seepage and piping are the main causes of the failure / damage of the temporary coffer dams. If the seepage quantity is too high, then it becomes difficult to handle it by dewatering in the dam pit. Dam concrete is required to be placed unhindered to have a monolithic construction of dam blocks & to have faster construction in the working season. Cut-off walls increase the seepage path considerably thus reducing the exit gradient and further reduction of the seepage thus helping in maintaining the seepage free area for working."

Trench cutter systems have been used in civil engineering for the least 30 years for the installation of deep cut-off walls, retaining walls and foundation systems. The systems are constantly advanced to achieve greater depth, penetrate through harder rocks a provide a bigger footprint of the cutter. The state-of-the-art equipment can reach down to 250 m vertical depth and penetrate all different types of soils and rocks up to 150 MPa unconfined compressive strength.In mining, especially in commodities with a high value and where the ore deposit has a small footprint, cutter mining with vertical attack from the existing ground level will be a new, cost-efficient approach where conventional open pit mining is not economically feasible due to a high stripping ratio. The same applies for open pit mines that have reached the end of their conventional mine life and where going underground is also uneconomical. The BAUER Cutter Mining System, which has been adapted to the special needs of mining, is a new technology that will allow mining at depths of up to 250 m.The same system can be also applied to ore dykes, be it vertical or slightly inclined, concentrating the excavation on the actual orebody and minimising the strip ratio and the contamination of ore. The system can be adapted to the dimension of the dykes or veins and to the rock conditions.BAUER’s latest approach is to use the vertical cutter mining technology for the extraction of sea floor massive sulfides from the seabed in deep ocean waters. INTRODUCTION The U.S. Department of Energy's Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is being constructed to provide permanent storage of radioactive TRU waste materials emanating from military weapons production. These wastes are contaminated with radioactive elements heavier than uranium, thus the name trans-(or beyond) uranic (Uranium wastes). The WIPP site, which is located 26 miles east of Carlsbad, New Mexico, was chosen thru a selection process after the National Academy of Sciences recommended salt deposits as a promising host strata for the storage of radioactive wastes. Throughout the United States numerous DOE facilities have produced and stored defense-generated TRU wastes. Once WIPP becomes operational in the fall of 1989, all sites may ship directly to this repository. A companion project has developed special shipping containers (TRUPACT) for safe transport of materials to WIPP. The WIPP facility is currently composed of surface buildings, three shafts, and underground storage and experimental rooms and tunnels. Frontier-Kemper Constructors, Inc. (FKCI) has nearly completed the construction of the fourth shaft, an intake shaft, to provide additional ventilation to the underground workings. PLANNED SHAFT EXCAVATION METHOD Full-face raise boring ( upreaming ) was the allowable method selected by Frontier-Kemper Constructors for the excavation of the shaft. After arrival of an oil-field type rotary drill rig in December 1987, a 9 inch diameter pilot hole was drilled from the surface to the mine level, a depth of approximately 2145 feet.

This paper examines the intrinsic mechanisms of cutter roof by combining field investigation, laboratory testings, underground instrumentations, and numerical modelling. Cutter roof developed during the development of a set of longwall panel entries in a West Virginia coal mine was presented as a case study. Mining alternatives applicable to the mine are recommended. Cutter roof occurred in two other West Virginia coal mines were also investigated Detailed comparisons were made among the three cases. As a result of the extensive investigation, intrinsic mechanisms of cutter roof failures under various conditions are presented from the practical and theoretical points of view.

High horizontal stress has been well recognized as a significant factor in roof control. It can adversely affect roof stability if the panel is designed improperly. Mining experience has shown that it can cause a cutter roof. The effects of high horizontal stress on roof stability depend on many factors such as magnitude and direction of the maximum principal horizontal stress, ratio of the maximum to minimum principal horizontal stress, structure and mechanical properties of the immediate roof and mining sequence. However, little is known about the intrinsic mechanism of high horizontal stress effect on roof stability except some conceptual explanations. In order to design a stable entry, the redistribution and concentration of high horizontal stress around the openings must be fully understood. Using the 3-D finite element analysis technique, this paper presents the redistribution and concentration of high horizontal stress field for a three-entry system with different orientations of horizontal stress. Based on the horizontal stress redistribution, possible roof failure for different orientations of horizontal stress is analyzed.

"In order to remodel an existing beach resort on the Gulf of Mexico, an existing three story structure, founded on stepped tapered piles, was to be replaced by a ten-story building with service rooms on a daylight basement level, conference rooms on the next levels and up-scale hotel rooms on the upper levels. The new building was founded on augered-cast-in-place (ACIP) piles. The pile caps and the basement required excavations between nine and fifteen feet (three to five meters) below ground surface.BAUER Foundations Corp. (BFC) successfully used Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) to install the support of excavation walls. This technique allowed for the adjustment of the wall alignment during execution in order to avoid existing and new piles and other underground obstructions. Nearly 1600 – 16-inch (400 mm diameter) ACIP piles were installed to an average depth of 71.5 feet (22m) below ground surface (BGS) by BFC to support the new hotel structure. Initial grout overages in piles were excessively high and ground stability issues were encountered in some pile locations. By identifying specific areas of concern BFC was able to modify the approach to ACIP installation, effectively mitigating the ongoing risks and successfully completed the project.PROJECTMarriott Hotels began the $300 million renovation and upgrade of their Marco Island Marriott Beach Club Hotel in Marco Island, FL to JW Marriott status in May 2015. The renovation included the demolition of a portion of their existing hotel tower, and the construction of a new 10-story hotel tower consisting of 94 new guest rooms and a 10,000 SF (900 m2) ballroom, among other amenities. As is typical with hotel construction, time was of the essence. The schedule was the driving factor of this project as the owner had already booked events in their new ballroom starting in January of 2017.BFC provided the client with a deep foundation package that included the installation of 1562 Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) piles supporting the new tower, and the design and construction of approximately 36,500 SF (3,400 m2) of soil-mixed retaining wall for support of excavation (SoE)."

"The cutter soil mixing technology was been applied in Portugal since the last seven years. The aim of this paper is to present the main design and execution criteria, related with both the cofferdam and foundations solutions, using soil-cement panels, reinforced with steel profiles, at the new Leixões Cruise Terminal, located at the Leixões Port, in Portugal. The Terminal building was built with one basement on a marine environment, over very difficult geological and geotechnical conditions, which demanded the use of some unusual and integrated geotechnical solutions. It is also pointed out the importance of the QC/QA, as well as the technical, economic and environmental advantages of the cutter soil mixing technique, comparing with same more conventional solutions.1 INTRODUCTIONThe construction of the new Cruise Terminal at Leixões, main gate of the Atlantic Ocean to the North of Portugal and Spain, as a consequence to the constant increase of the cruise traffic, was a challenge from both the geotechnical and structural point of views, mainly due to very difficult and unusual conditions, ranging from the geological and geotechnical scenario to the existent and under operation Leixões Port infrastructures, mainly the South break water, as well as the existent cruising boarding deck (Figure 1).According to the Terminal Project it was necessary to build one basement below the water table level, including several earth retaining structures in order to allow the excavation works on dry conditions leading to a global cofferdam effect. For this purpose soil - cement panels, using CSM technology, reinforced with steel profiles, micropiles (both for foundation and cut off effect) and the existent sheet piles were used. Also pointed out are the adopted special foundations of a very complex structure, including bored piles and micropiles (Figure 1)."

The property is located in the Porgera Valley 600 Km North West of Port Moresby. The remote location is 2500 m above sea level. The mine area has 3,600 mm of annual rainfall and a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from 10" C to 22° C throughout the year. Alluvial gold was reported in the Porgera area in 1938 and has been an important source of revenue for the area for many years. Intermittent exploration was carried out until the 1960's when Placer (PNG) Pty. Ltd. with Mt. Isa Mines commenced an extensive exploration program. The property was brought to production in 1990 by the Porgera Joint Venture group consisting of Mount Isa Mines Ltd, Rennison Goldfield Consolidated Ltd. and Placer Dome Inc, each with a 30% ownership and the Government of Papua New Guinea with a 10% share. Placer Dome Inc. is the manager of the property with construction under the direction of the Placer Dome Technical Services group.

This paper compares the two commonly employed "free" cyanide online analysis methods (amperometric and potentiometric end-point silver nitrate titration) with the common site laboratory rhodanine endpoint silver nitrate titration and ion selective electrode methods. Measurement differences between these methods are presented and discussed for cyanide solutions containing copper and zinc with varying cyanide to metal ion ratios. The resulting cyanide available to leach gold is also compared with these measurements.

"Cyanide is a leaching agent for precious metals commonly used in gold ore processing. Cyanide exists in various forms (including free, complexed as weak or strong complexes, and as ions such as cyanate and thiocyanate), so its detection, speciation and analysis in processing or environmental samples can be complex. This paper will review best practices for cyanide sampling and preservation in the field, interferences and pretreatment methods required prior to sample analysis and analytical methods that are used for cyanide species. Titrimetric, flow injection ligand exchange, spectrophotometric, colorimetric, potentiometric, amperometric, and chromatography techniques will be discussed and their chemistries, detection limits, advantages and limitations will be described.INTRODUCTION Cyanide is well known to be an extremely toxic species. Accurate cyanide measurement in effluent from mines is critical from an environmental perspective. Its measurement is also an important control parameter in the recovery of gold using cyanidation. Cyanide chemistry is diverse and complex, and cyanide analysis can be challenging as a result of and because of limitations in understanding of analytical methods. Various chemical mechanisms can form or destroy cyanide, and the sample matrix or preservation chemicals can also affect analytical results. These interferences make the collection of reliable cyanide measurements challenging and can start as soon as the sample is collected, during laboratory pre-treatment and during analysis. This paper reviews different methods of cyanide measurement. Barrick Gold Corporation operates gold mines in the United States, Chile, 'Peru, Canada, and in the near future, in l1anzania. Barrick meets environmental requirements and limits the potentially adverse effect of cyanide discharge to the environment using various cyanide destruction techniques. Barrick operations use, or have used, natural degradation, ferrous sulphate, hydrogen peroxide, Caro's acid, alkaline chlorination, and the SO/Air process for cyanide destruction. This paper presents a general discussion of the options for controlling cyanide in plant effluent and provides details of Barrick's operating experience including general notes on costs.

Pintail Systems, Inc, a Colorado USA based company has developed and commercially applied bioremediation processes for biological detoxification of cyanide compounds in mine waste. Site-specific microorganisms are isolated from spent ore, tailings or process solutions and augmented in the laboratory for cyanide oxidation, denitrification and metal biomineralisation. Biological processes typically treat complex contaminants (cyanide compounds, soluble metals and nitrates) in a fraction of the time of conventional remediation processes. Cyanide is used in microbial metabolic processes as a carbon or a nitrogen source. Biological detoxification processes applied at the end of mine life can end long-term liability and perpetual monitoring and containment. Case studies from commercial application and demonstration programs for the US Environmental Protection Agency will be presented in this paper.

"The International Cyanide Management Code (the Code) is a voluntary industry program for gold miners and associated cyanide transporters and cyanide producers. By becoming a signatory, a company commits to follow the CodeÆs principles and implement its standards of practice.Signatories are required to undergo an initial certification audit within three years and a recertification audit every subsequent three years. Recertification audits evaluate compliance over the preceding three-year period. This approach presents a number of challenges. Golder Associates has undertaken in excess of 75 initial certification audits and 25 recertification audits; more than any other audit firm. This paper outlines some of the challenges identified and lessons learnt from the recertification audit process. Central to the process is the challenge for organisations to maintain commitment to compliance over the full three-year period and effectively address deficiencies or non-conformances that may have occurred during that period in a prompt manner.The International Cyanide Management Institute (ICMI) provides guidance in evaluating deficiencies or non-conformances, which requires consideration of the æcauseÆ, ædurationÆ and æongoing compliance effortsÆ and an assessment of the concept of ægood faithÆ in response actions. Cyanide (CN) is used to recover gold from its ores in many locations worldwide. In spite of the established history of gold mining in Alaska, modern cyanidation methods have been used at only one location, the Ryan Lode Mine at Ester Dome, near Fairbanks. Ore was processed by heap leaching between 1987 and 1989, when permitting issues caused operations to be terminated. Those issues have since been resolved, and plans to reopen the mine are currently being discussed. Plans are also proceeding to develop several other ore deposits in the state, all of which include the use of cyanide for gold recovery [6]. Since tailings and effluent water produced from these mines will require treatment, it is important to develop detoxification methods suitable for the Arctic and sub-Arctic conditions found in Alaska. Several methods exist for removing cyanide from mining wastewater. However, most industrial users prefer chemical treatment systems, and typically use sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, or sulfur dioxide/air/copper to oxidize free and complexed cyanides [9]. Biological treatment has been used successfully at two sites in the United States [30,32] and field tested at several others [20,27,28]. In addition, one mine uses "natural processes", which include natural oxidation, photodegradation, and degradation by naturally occurring bacteria [33].

Of the gold mined in Canada over 90 percent is extracted from the ore by the process of "cyanidation". In this process crushed ore is treated with lime to provide "protective alkalinity" and cyanide, usually in the form of sodium cyanide. The gold is dissolved in the cyanide solution, which after further treatments for clarification, is precipitated by the addition of zinc dust. Wastes from the process consist of tailings which will contain cyanides. Water consumption, mill size, effluent quantity and quality are depicted in transparency (1). It should be noted that as far as the wastes are concerned it has been impossible to postulate a typical situation. Variation from the above data will occur. A summary of data from tailings pond effluents is presented in transparency (2). The figures in parentheses indicate the usual range of values for the parameter.

"INTRODUCTIONWestern Mines' copper-lead-zinc operations are located in Strathcona Provincial Park, near the geographic centre of Vancouver Island. This park includes Buttle Lake, which flows into the Campbell River water system. The latter provides domestic water for the Town of Campbell River, approximately fifty-eight miles from the mine site.Operation of the concentrator commenced in December 1966, at which time the tailings were discharged into a small tailings pond near the plant. On May 8, 1967 Permit No. 185 was granted to the company, allowing discharge of the tailings, through a submerged outfall, to the bottom of Buttle Lake.Needless to say, the concept of operating a mine within a park, and the discharge of tailings into Buttle Lake generated considerable controversy. However, this has all but been eliminated over the years by the proven effectiveness of Western Mines' pollution control program. In 1973 this program was further upgraded with the addition of an alkaline chlorination plant. Effluent treatment by this method became necessary as a result of process modifications, and has been effective in maintaining the levels of characteristics in the tailings within the ever increasing pollution control requirements imposed on the industry."

In this paper, four cyanide-utilising bacteria strains were isolated from a gold mine tailings pond, in the Hexi gold mine (Shandong), China. Based on the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence, four strains were identified as Aeromonas hydrophila strain C1, Bacillus mojavensis strain C3, Shewanella oneidensis strain C2, and Aeromonas media strain C4. Based on the cyanide detoxification efficiencies results of the four strains, Bacillus mojavensis C3 had the highest detoxification rate and was selected to assess its efficiency to detoxify cyanide in gold mine tailings at different pH (9.5, 10.5, and 11.6) using cyanide as the sole carbon and nitrogen sources. Strain C3 was capable of detoxifying 46.5mg/L of cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at all tested pH ranges at 30oC, 196 rpm after 15 d. The amounts of cyanide detoxified were 87.5%, 84.1%, and 73.5% at initial pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest cyanide detoxification was observed at pH 9.5. The viable cells growths in the samples were 5.7E+09CFU/mL, 4.9E+09CFU/mL, and 2.7E+09CFU/mL at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. Free ammonia concentrations were observed as a byproduct of the biodetoxification process. The residual ammonia concentration in the sample was observed at 0.35 mg/L, 0.33 mg/L, and 0.62 mg/L at pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.6, respectively. The highest residual ammonia concentration was noticed at pH 11.6. The amount of cyanide removed by mixed culture strains C3 and C4 was 94.6% and showed a residual free ammonia concentration of 2.6mg/L, as biodetoxification byproduct after 120 h. The pure culture Bacillus mojavensis strain C3 and its mixed culture strains exhibited higher potential to detoxify cyanide-containing gold mine tailings at alkaline pH values and could be cultivated to detoxify gold mine effluents at large-scale.
