This presentation provides a critical review of the steps and tools to compile a complete hydrologic review of a mine property. The forces of regulation, increased scientific analysis, better tools, and stakeholder expectations have created a perfect storm of accuracy demand. BIOX® has been successfully demonstrated over the past 2 decades for the recovery of gold from refractory sulphide concentrates. To date 12 successful BIOX® plants have been installed in 8 countries spanning 4 continents with the 13th installation currently nearing completion in the Philippines. In 2010 BIOMIN introduced the ASTER™ process for improved water balances in commercial BIOX® applications by supporting tightening environmental legislation on water usage and availability in both arid and tropical regions. Previously, a common challenge for BIOX® plants was the inability to recycle thiocyanate containing water due to the low tolerance of the organisms. ASTER™, a biological thiocyanate and cyanide destruction process, renders a non-toxic solution for re-use in BIOX®. Two commercial ASTER™ plants are in operation with the 3rd ASTER™ plant under construction in the Philippines. A 3rd BIOMIN technology, specifically developed for double refractory ores is available for implementation. The HiTeCC process has shown considerable success on ores where competition from disseminated carbon has rendered ineffective gold recoveries. Through HiTeCC, gold is desorbed from the carbonaceous matter by manipulating the ionic strength and temperature of conventionally treated CIL product. One Australian commercial plant utilises HiTeCC while a 2nd installation is set for commissioning 4th Quarter 2014. BIOMIN’s premier solutions for refractory gold processing are described herein.

Up to today, it has been very difficult to obtain qualitative and quantitative information about the status and production process of a construction site. It is becoming more and more important to be able to analyze this process so as to notice bottlenecks and interruptions on the site early on. The high costs of each shift in special foundation industry mean that making the wrong decision and/or interruptions can put the financial result at risk. Previously, keeping reliable data meant manual process documentation. This was done either by an additional staff member (incurring high additional costs for training, education, etc.) or by the equipment operators. The latter is critical, because they have to initiate every process step change, leaving no time to log data separately. Studies have shown that there are considerable deviations from the actual process steps. In this paper, a seamless, automated method will be introduced to analyze the construction process. This method recognizes each process step from the equipment data. The main purpose of the data recorded by the piling rig is the need of quality reports and now basis for the presented analysis. Here, a method was successfully transferred from theoretical computer science (compiler construction field) to find application for process recognition. Because the execution of works in special foundation construction can always be defined sequentially and therefore also practiced sequentially, recognition can occur step-by-step. Our method always recognizes the next step, so it does not have to monitor as much data at the same time. Individual trigger points are easier to define. Unlike solutions that are based on a global approach and allocate suitable process steps to data patterns, thereby also creating gaps, the presented method is always seamless. Furthermore, this method can be applied regardless of time or location provided that the necessary machine data is available, which is normally the case with production data logging. This means that construction sites even from the past can also be analyzed and the results used for comparisons. The first results from the analysis of a complete continuous flight augering (CFA piles) installation process of a construction site will be presented.

ISASMELT™ technology is based on the use of an elegant furnace system design which uses submerged lance technology to provide highly efficient mixing and reaction of feed materials in a molten slag bath. Within Peru the ISASMELT™ technology has been applied to the Southern Copper Ilo Smelter, part of Grupo Mexico. Southern Copper selected the ideal technology to meet their sulphur capture and particulate emissions requirements whilst minimising capital and operating costs. The commissioning of the ISASMELT™ in 2007 marked the modernisation of the primary smelting section of their smelter, with traditional batch converters still used for the secondary smelting stage of the copper production flowsheet.

"When completed, 520 Park Avenue will amend the Manhattan skyline and be one of the most prestigious high-rise towers in New York City. The 52-story condominium building is located on a 60 ft by 100 ft lot (18.3 m by 30.5 m) on East 60th Street between Park Avenue and Madison Avenue. The geographically complex site is bounded by two fragile five-story masonry buildings on the east and west, a mid-rise building on the north, and a New York City Transit (NYCT) subway tunnel on the south. To add to this complexity, the ambitious development required an excavation between 70 and 80 ft (21.3 and 24.4 m) deep, mostly below groundwater level in highly-permeable rock, to accommodate four levels of cellars. The new building also cantilevers 24 ft (7.3 m) over a five-story historic building on the east. The limited footprint of the building coupled with large compressive and tensile axial loads, considerable base shear and over-turning moments, and the required deep excavation, presented unique foundation challenges. This article describes how the challenges were solved with an innovative combination of permanent secant pile walls and drilled shafts.Site GeologyThe 1865 Viele Map provides the site topographic conditions prior to development in the area, and indicates that the site was at the eastern edge of a historic marshland, which was approximately west of Park Avenue and north of 58th Street. A historic stream, which ran alongside the eastern edge of the site, was part of a larger stream network that traversed the surrounding area. This stream network is also visible in the 1865 Viele map. In addition, the bedrock beneath the site lies in a highly weathered zone due to a couple of ancient faulted zones that transect the site. These indicate that a zone of highly weathered rock is expected."

In many respects a porphyry copper ore concentrator plant can be considered as a simple system. Chalcopyrite typically liberates well at relatively coarse sizes, and even low grade ores are amenable to upgrading 20 to 30 times to produce concentrate grades in excess of 25 % in very simple Rougher- Regrind-Cleaner+Scavenger flotation circuits. The flotation response of chalcopyrite has been well characterised in many fundamental and applied research studies and the conditions necessary to depress pyrite and other floating gangue species are well understood. But what happens to the particle surfaces when you have a 50 km pipeline between the grinding circuit and the flotation plant? How does the seasonal variation in water quality affect your ability to control pulp chemistry? What impact does the relative concentration of the different sulphide species have on their separability? Why do two plants that receive nominally the same ore produce consistently different results? And most importantly, what do you need to do to improve the performance of both plants? To answer these and other questions, a focussed sampling and analysis programme was carried out at the Las Tórtolas flotation plants in 2018 and 2019. The work included full down-the-bank sampling, hot floats, the use of radioactive tracers for determining residence time distribution profiles, gas dispersion measurements, detailed mineralogy by size across the circuits and multiple regrind surveys. This comprehensive study was augmented by analysis of historical mineralogy, geometallurgy and operating data using modern data science techniques, and has provided the foundation for current and future optimisation initiatives. To cater for the future introduction of 12 car trains, London Blackfriars railway station is being extended from the north end to span across the River Thames. Following the demolition of existing buildings, a number of challenges had to be overcome including working adjacent to a live railway line, above live London Underground tracks and working in small restricted spaces. Trains entering and exiting two lines of track at the bridge's north end of track meant that access was difficult due to the location and proximity to existing infrastructure. The site was very much constrained and congested and there were also a series of works in place to maintain passenger flows so as not to inconvenience the travelling public. The site had been developed many times in the past resulting in a number of obstructions that would require removal during the piling work including old brickwork, reinforced concrete, redundant railway sleepers and track and existing concrete and timber piles. A number of solutions had to be devised to overcome these obstructions. Piling works were undertaken during the day and at night to meet programme.

As available space in urban centers becomes more scarce, builders and developers are increasingly turning to vacant, existing structures to meet cities' growing needs. The developers of City Ridge Roadside Development and North America Sekisui House (NASH) - - found a suitable site for their "urban village" at the former Fannie Mae headquarters complex on Wisconsin Ave. NW in Washington, D.C., which had been vacated in early 2018. The urban village will consist of eight new structures centered around the building that currently sits on the site. All told, the project will include 687 residential units, a 150-room hotel, over 150,000 sq ft (13,935 sq m) of retail space, and 62,000 sq ft (5,760 sq m) of office space. A below-grade parking structure will extend across most of the footprint. The Fannie Mae building, which was designed in the Colonial Revival style to mimic the Governor's Palace in Williamsburg, Virginia, was named a historical landmark following a request from the development team. The central portion of its existing masonry structure was built in 1956 on pile caps with small-diameter cast-in-place piles. Two wings, which were added in 1962, were built on belled caissons. There are three levels above grade and one below.

"In the article there is set forth a development experience of JSC LEBEDINSKY GOK Beneficiation Plant concerning the plan of increase in the production volumes of the iron ore concentrate with Fe content more than 69.5%. There are considered the issues regarding implementation of the updated process scheme of the concentrate beneficiation using fine screening operation, its industrial tests have shown an exploitability of this development direction. There are described the issues relating to the ceramic filters for dehydration of the additionally-beneficiated concentrate, there are given the production and process figures achieved during the exploitation. The methods of the research. In the paper there have been used the following scientific research methods: the methods of system analysis, mathematical statistics, classification, comparison, modelling, observance, experiment. INTRODUCTION JSC LEBEDINSKY GOK is the largest leading enterprise for iron ore beneficiation and the unique RF producer of the merchant hot briquetted sponge iron (HBI) highly demanded by the consumers. Raw materials for hot briquetted iron production are fluxed pellets produced from iron ore concentrate with Fe content more than 69.5% (additionally-beneficiated concentrate). Strategic program of the plant’s development foresees expansion of production of the highly demanded products that imposes a necessity of expending capacity of the enterprise and implementation in production of modern processes and equipment having low resource intensity and ensuring in addition a high efficiency. Construction of the third stage of the HBI Plant became one of directions for the strategic development of JSC LEBEDINSKY GOK implemented in 2017 that caused a demand in the production volumes and filtration of the iron ore concentrate with Fe content more than 69.5%. Purpose of the work – to develop and to provide a rationalization for efficiency of the production process and filtration of the iron ore concentrate with Fe content more than 69.5% ensuring increase of production volumes and its prime cost."

Intelligent systems (IS) technologies have received much attention in a wide range of process engineering applications including process operations. With the revolutionary progress in information and computer technologies applying the latest technologies in metallurgical complexes has become a serious challenge to both management and technical teams. Objects and components are changing the way everyone relates to their computer and networks. Goals of real time performance monitoring includes maximizing the profitability by maximizing production, improving efficiency, attending product quality, costs, maintenance, environmental and safety regulations. Designers must consider the greatly expanded desktop computing, Microsoft object technology, Internet and how to build these systems. This paper discusses some opportunities and challenges using objects, components in designing applications and integrating intelligent systems tools. Two examples using performance equations and IS technologies applied to mineral processing are presented.

Aços microligados expostos a ambientes contendo H2S e CO2 (sour gas) sofrem corrosão generalizada que promovem a entrada de hidrogênio atômico no metal, causando fragilização por hidrogênio, podendo gerar falhas graves no material. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar o grau de fragilização, utilizando ensaio Charpy, de um tubo API 5L X65 após diferentes tempos de imersão em uma solução saturada com H2S. O eletrólito empregado foi solução A (ácido acético contendo cloreto de sódio) da norma NACE TM0284-2011, fazendo-se purga com N2 e injeções de H2S. Os corpos de prova padronizados foram imersos durante 96 e 360 horas, sendo que após doze dias do término da imersão, foram realizados os ensaios Charpy. Foram levantadas as curvas da energia absorvida em função da temperatura, para corpos de prova com e sem imersão. Os resultados mostraram que mesmo após imersão, não houve modificação significativa na temperatura de transição do material, apenas uma pequena diminuição da energia absorvida. Esse comportamento sugere que o teor de hidrogênio em solução sólida aumentou em função do tempo de imersão, levando a tais resultados. O refinamento da microestrutura e o baixo nível de inclusões estão relacionados a baixa quantidade e uniformidade da distribuição dos sítios de ancoramento de hidrogênio irreversível, o que pode explicar o desempenho obtido.

O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o efeito da deformação elástica cíclica e da deformação plástica no comportamento mecânico dos precipitados presentes em um implante fabricado em aço inoxidável UNS S31675. O teste foi iniciado com carregamentos cíclicos e finalizado com carregamento contínuo de dobramento até a ruptura total do implante, no intuito de avaliar se os precipitados sofrem fratura e/ou decoesão da matriz. A flexão ocasionada pelo teste de fadiga resultou em zonas de tração nos lados lateral e posterior e compressão nos lados medial e anterior do implante. Após 6 milhões de ciclos ocorreu a fratura parcial do implante na aresta entre os lados lateral e posterior (zonas de tração). Os resultados mostraram a existência de estrias na superfície de fratura do implante, indicando que a fadiga foi o mecanismo de falha predominante. A análise microestrutural mostrou que os precipitados não fraturaram na região de falha por fadiga, mas sofreram fratura e decoesão na região submetida a deformação plástica por dobramento. Concluiu-se que, embora os precipitados sejam considerados sítios preferenciais para nucleação de trincas de fadiga, eles são capazes de suportar carregamentos cíclicos no regime elástico, mesmo com grau de flexão da haste, onde zonas de tração e compressão são criadas.

"Some typical landslide phenomena in Western Greece, in terms of the geological composition and structure of the affected materials, induced by heavy rainfalls are thoroughly studied and analyzed. The studied cases involved composite landslides on Flysch and Neogene weak rock materials that constitute the most critical landslide prone geological formations in Greece. The studied cases named Platanos, Platanitis and Karya include representative landslide sites as regards to the geological composition and structure of the displaced formations. Thus: (a) flysch formation includes different lithological units as shales, marls, siltstones, sandstones and conglomerates and is closely related to the Alpine orogenesis, suffering intense past tectonic movements and (b) the Plio-Pleistocene sediments include clayey marls, marlstones and siltstones. The investigated landslides , affecting mainly transportation routes, are closely related to heavy rainfalls induced by extreme meteorological events and are controlled by active fault tectonics. Long term movement monitoring using borehole inclinometers and surface benchmarks showed that landslides control was effective only when the proper stabilization measures were taken.INTRODUCTIONLandslides represent a major threat to human life, property, infrastructure and natural environment in most regions of the world. They are recognized by the scientific and politic authorities as having a major socio-economic impact and they represent a significant hazard for the population and the properties in particular locations. Landslide hazard expressed as the probability of occurrence within a reference time period and is a function of the spatial and temporal probability (Varnes, 1984; Guzzetti et al. 1999; Lee and Jones, 2004). The spatial probability of landslide initiation (susceptibility) is mainly related to static causal factors (slope inclination, material properties, etc.), while temporal probability is mainly related to dynamic causal factors such as rain input, increased groundwater levels and drainage, earthquakes, etc. (Van Westen et al. 2005)."

Epidote is a common hydrothermal alteration product in many copper deposits of the southwestern United States. In many of these deposits epidote, along with calcite and chlorite, generally characterize a distal or halo propylitic alteration assemblage, but the mineral can occur within the central potassic alteration zone as well. Epidote is also a common alteration mineral in deposits formed in calcareous host rocks -- the skarn or pyrometasomatic ore bodies. Within the past 15 years, studies of the major and trace element composition of other alteration phases, principally biotite, associated with base metal ore deposits have demonstrated that some hydrothermal alteration minerals are compositional distinct from their igneous or metamorphic counterparts: However, the use of major and minor element content to identify and zero in on mineral¬ized areas does not appear to be very promising. Little work has been published upon the geochemistry of epidote from this standpoint and the results of my work suggest that a similar conclusion can be applied to epidote. My work (Fellows, 1976) suggests that epidote minerals in hydrothermal alteration suites from porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern United States are generally iron-rich rather than aluminum-rich. As a group, these alteration minerals differ compositionally from epidotes of regional metamorphic terrains. I ascribe these differences to the variations in the oxidation character of the respective environments. "Russia’s rare metal reserves are composed of compositionally and structurally complex ores and are characterized by an increased content of natural radionuclides due to their geochemical similarity with rare metals. For instance, concentrates of Zashikhinsky daeposit are characterized by an increased content of uranium (0,06%) and thorium (0,59%); Beloziminsky deposit holds pyrochlore-apatite-magnetite-carbonate ores characterized by increased radioactivity (130 mkR/h) and containing 0,0016-0,0025% of uranium; Etykinsky deposit is characterized by columbite-pyrochlore-microlith mineralization with an average ore grade of 0,013% of uranium and 0,0020% of thorium; eudialyte concentrate of Lovozero deposit (Alluaiv area) belongs to Class II of mineral reserves. Industrial development of these mineral reserves involves the need to comply with environmental standards, public health requirements applicable to finished core and by-products, to take into account the amount and class of the generated radioactive waste, the possibility of disposal or recycling of the radioactive production waste. Concentration processes of radioactive rare metal feeds most often lead to a concentration of natural radionuclides and their accumulation in concentrates. Comprehensive hydrometallurgical processes are currently under development for such concentrates, aimed at producing salable products compliant with the radiation safety standards. The choice of the hydrometallurgical processing method for radioactive rare metal concentrates is based on the mineralogical component of the concentrate, textural and structural features, the distribution of valuable components and impurities, and the content of radionuclides. A systemic approach to the selection of processing methods, in particular integrating several methods, is an effective solution. Methods may not only be combined, but also inextricably linked with each other. Hydrometallurgical processing methods include leaching by acidic and alkaline agents; sulfatization for selectively decomposing the minerals and moving the bulk of U and Th into solution; fluorine extraction process. Methods of precipitation and co-precipitation, extraction (by liquid and solid extractants), sorption, and ion exchange are used to decontaminate the solutions by removing thorium, mezathorium, uranium, and their radioactive decay products. Agents used in hydrometallurgical processing of radioactive rare metal ores include sulfuric, nitric, hydrochloric, hydrofluoric acid, alkali (NaOH, KOH), sorbents (for example, AB-17) for sorption of uranium and extractants (mono- and bidentate organophosphorus compounds, diamides, etc.) for the extraction separation of rare, rare-earth, and radioactive elements."

The ventilation survey was conducted in an underground longwall trona mine. The mine is relatively shallow and categorized as a gassy mine. The ventilation system consists of nine shafts (three intakes and six exhausts). Three surface based axial fans ventilate the mine configured in a blowing arrangement. Following the ventilation survey airflow quantity, frictional pressure losses and air psychrometric characteristics have been quantified. An accurate resistance survey has been conducted to calculate the pressure drop with regard to moving cages and skips in the shafts. This paper discusses the benefits of utilizing high accuracy digital pressure transducers and psychrometers in a ?leapfrogging? survey to gather data needed to build the computer ventilation model. Two underground booster fans with VFD are currently idle but available at the mine. The ventilation model has been used to determine the optimal booster fan locations to decrease the overall operating cost by reducing the load carried by the main fans. A leakage study has been conducted to evaluate the effects on the system of additional pressure from a booster fan. The study finally prepares a future ventilation model for the next fifteen years of mine operation and investigates the effect of proposed scenarios.

The so called Bublon®-process is an innovative process for the controlled expansion of volcanic glasses such as Perlite and for thermal treatment of other minerals. In this manner, functional light fillers with astonishingly altered physical properties can be manufactured. In contrast to conventional Perlite expanding processes no fossil fuels are burned in order to achieve the expansion. Instead, the feed material is heated electrically mainly by radiation based on heat transfer from heating elements. The main advantage is the better controllability of the production process. Therefore, the heating elements are segmented along the flow of the particles, hence in direction of the ongoing expansion. Overheating of the particles, which ultimately leads to the destruction of the particle surfaces and consequently decreasing the quality of the expansion product, can be reduced significantly. Due to flow characteristics and settling behaviors of fines the lower particle size limit of the feed in this process is restricted to not less than 100 µm. Otherwise process instabilities are to be expected. Manufacturing industry demands light and fine hollow microspheres. Therefore, a proven cooperation between Montanuniversität Leoben and Bublon GmbH was formed to develop a new process called ‘Bublite’. This issue was addressed by changing the conveying principle into a pneumatically conveying system transporting particles from the bottom to the top of the kiln by the means of a drag flow. This approach makes it possible to handle the difficult flow patterns in the kiln and to control the retention time of the particles in the heat transfer zone. As a result, it is now possible to expand very fine Perlite particles into a high quality functional lightweight filler with a glazed-closed surface. The dependence of the polymer industry on importing this kind of fillers from overseas can be reduced by producing it close to sites of demand. Also the Perlite mining and processing companies benefit from this technology because the mine lifespan and the output of the processing plant can be increased.

In proved reserves of vanadium-containing titanomagnetite in Panxi, China, iron grades of ores were 50% ~ 15%. China?s metallurgical industry departments defined the iron ores containing 50% ~ 20% TFe as exploitable resources and the extreme lean iron ores containing 20% ~ 15% TFe as temporary unexploitable resources, the extreme lean ores were as waste rejected into waste dump in mining process. This paper researched process mineralogy of the extreme lean ores, adopted mineral processing technology responded to the properties of the ores to treat the ores and obtained quality vanadium-iron concentrate, titanium concentrate and sulfur concentrate, therefore successfully utilized the extreme lean ores, changed the ores from waste resources to exploitable resources.

"This article is directed at plant production, engineering and maintenance personnel. Seldom does any industrial operation take the time to study the costs involved in the generation of what is probably their most expensive plant utility energy source.IntroductionIn the typical industrial plant in Canada, a 200 hp, 900 cfm, air compressor costs about $60,000* per year to operate (Fig. 1). In 1989 when BC Hydro embarked on their industrial energy management program Airflow Energy Ltd. were asked to spearhead the “Efficiency Compressed Air” portion of that program with a mandate to perform onsite overview surveys and physical hands-on testing of some 300 selected industrial plants throughout British Columbia for compressor efficiencies and wasteful air leaks (Fig. 2). The program duration lasted until 1995, during which time a tremendous amount of data were amassed relating to equipment types, clients’ operating habits, end-use applications and operating costs.During the past six years, Airflow Energy also performed somewhat similar surveys but on a smaller scale in Alberta, Ontario, the United States and the Republic of China. It was no surprise to find some inherent equipment concerns related to efficiency as well as neglected energy wasteful air leaks, so British Columbia was not alone and the problems appear somewhat universal."
