G-ResourcesÆ Martabe Mine in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is a US$700 M world-class and world-scale operation in a country which, with a few notable smaller scale exceptions, has had no significant hard rock mining development in more than ten years.The mine was commissioned in the middle part of 2012 and poured first gold on 24 July. At full production Martabe will produce 250 000 oz/a of gold and 2 - 3 Moz/a of silver at cash costs in the lowest quartile. The mine location is on the west coast of North Sumatra, which experiences annual rainfall of 4 m with no notable dry season, adjacent to seismically active fault zones, and relatively close to a rural community of 31 000 people with no significant industrial experience.The management team has successfully forged strong links with the various government departments and levels in Jakarta, North Sumatra Province and the local Regencies; developed long-term relationships with the various community groups within the local district of Batangtoru to build a sustainable social licence; has dealt with the physical and environmental challenges presented by the project location, and has successfully raised more than US$900 M over a period of three years for the original acquisition then the development of the project.Whilst in its infancy of operation, the mine is set up to deliver a long-term sustainable future for the company, the shareholders, and the people of Batangtoru and all stakeholders generally. Bow-tie analysis is a commonly used tool to identify and display risks that have the potential for an undesired hazardous event. The output of the analysis are bow-tie diagrams, which are an effective and versatile communication format that can be applied to any type of risk. Contrary to their simplicity, a proper bow-tie diagram that maintains its usefulness and clear communication is difficult to build. Over two decades assisting Major Hazard Facilities with bow-tie analysis for Safety Cases, several common mistakes have been identified. This paper aims to highlight those issues with examples and provide improvement strategies. A sample of the most common mistakes are: - overly complicated risk analysis - poorly scoped and defined terms - poor descriptions and justifications - identifying too many dependent controls. Overly complicated risk analysis leads to wasted time in obtaining data for little gain. The bow-tie diagram is only a model. Effort should be redirected into identifying and managing controls that will make a tangible difference to site risk. Broad scopes lead to enormous and confusing bow-tie diagrams for both the user and the workshop team. Defining the scope of the study, the consequence severity of interest and critical control characteristics creates focused workshops and targeted analysis. With more definitive scope, there may be more bow-tie diagrams, however, they are succinct and specific. Well described causes are imperative for clear communication to users, regulators and future bowtie review workshop groups. It is best to use common wording structures and explain the event stepby- step. Also, clearly document any likelihood calculations and use data references where applicable. Identifying all possible controls creates a false sense of security that there are many layers of protection. In reality, most controls are dependent on a single system or person and could all be compromised from a single failure. A definition of a ‘bow-tie’ control is required whereby it must be independent from other controls. Improving the bow-tie analysis process will assist operators in developing meaningful and ‘operational’ bow-tie diagrams to support risk management systems and practices.

In 1996, lack of confidence in assaying methods and sample handling affected companies as diverse as Bre-X and Timbuktu. Both share prices and the ability to raise financing are impacted when the quality of assay data is suspect. Overseas projects are subject to enhanced scrutiny when local facilities are used that are unfamiliar to brokers, financing agencies and banks. Quality control systems can be -implemented but there are associated costs. These costs should reflect the risk to the mining company, investors and financiers and the size of the proposed investment. In this regard, assay control call is considered a form of insurance to enhance the value of an exploration or mining project.

Michels installed 242 drilled shafts to support the piers for a new basket-handle, true-arch twin bridge across the Mississippi River from Moline, IL to Bettendorf, IA. The installation of the drilled shafts was completed with the simultaneous use of two Liebherr LB36 and one IMT 300 drill rigs. Utilizing barges, 233 drilled shafts were installed in the river. Michels crews also installed 7-ft to 10-ft permanent steel casing into the bedrock, and drilled to depths of 60 feet for each shaft. Despite working in strong currents, freezing temperatures and on rocking barges, Michels crews placed the shafts within 3 inches of plan position. Since the drilled shafts are the key piece in supporting the bridge structure, Michels provided cross-hole sonic logging to verify the integrity and strength of the concrete within the shafts and to add another level of quality control for the owner/customer. Extensive planning took place each day to ensure that tugboats, the linchpin of the project, were being efficiently utilized to shift the barges and materials daily. On any given day, Michels transported five concrete trucks by barge from shore to shaft sites to pour between 40 and 240 cubic yards of concrete. The Michels environmental team was diligent with preparing, discussing and implementing a water treatment plan that was accepted by all state and federal agencies and adhered to strict environmental regulations. Grain hopper barges were rented to control and treat the water that was used in the drilling operations. Another challenge crews ran into was the discovery of caverns when drilling into some parts of the bedrock. Michels worked with the engineer to develop a plan to construct the drilled shafts that encountered the caverns.

When working in remote and extreme environments, projects are faced with new challenges for engineering and project execution. This is heightened when also working in countries with a developing environmental regulatory framework, small skilled workforce available for recruitment, and minimal infrastructure such as power, roads, and water. There is an increasing realization that social and environmental aspects need to be built into project execution. Giving proper attention to these issues during project development and execution, and maximizing opportunities is an ongoing challenge.

For the past two years, Cliffs Natural Resources in Minnesota has tried an experiment: it has staffed a booth at the Iron Range Earth Fest. ?It was a little unusual for a mining company to participate in an event that centers around preserving the Earth?s resources,? said Julie Lucas, environmental manager at Hibbing Taconite Company. ?But Cliffs is a sustainable company and we want to take every opportunity to share information about our practices. We found the response to be overwhelmingly positive.? Cliffs? outreach effort is just one of the surprising ways mining companies across Minnesota are reaching out to stakeholders and finding success. The following paper summarizes our observations on building response to mine subsidence and techniques for mitigation of building damage. The subsidence cases are located in Illinois. The general description of the geologic and mine conditions are primarily for those sites. Data on building response and mitigation measures were collected under grants supported by the Abandoned Mined Lands Reclamation Council (AMLRC) of Illinois and the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in Twin Cities, Minnesota. Case histories include pit and sag subsidence primarily beneath abandoned room and pillar mines. The majority of the paper deals with structures affected by sag subsidence. Most of the structures are one and two story homes. The first section of the paper summarizes the typical geologic and mining conditions at the sites. Building response to pit and sag subsidence follows the first section. Emphasis is placed on the behavior of concrete and masonry foundations, and wood frame and masonry superstructures. The third section describes mitigation techniques used to prevent or minimize building damage. A summary of the observations and critical parameters is given at the end of the paper.

The construction industry has one of the largest numbers of injuries compared to other industries. Thus, reducing accidents and determining construction risks are extremely important. One of the essential steps for construction safety management is hazard identification and risk assessment, since the most unmanageable risks are from unidentified hazards. While the urban rail transit systems are being developed rapidly in almost all major cities of India, adjoining Existing Building Structures and historic sites are facing possible threats of unexpected damages and accidents. The protection of these structures becomes one of the major challenges specifically when the infrastructure being developed involves construction of underground tunnels passing through old cities. The assessment of settlement induced damage on buildings during the preliminary phase of tunnel excavation projects, is nowadays receiving greater attention. Analyses at different levels of detail are performed on the surface building in proximity to the tunnel, to evaluate the risk of structural damage and the need of mitigation measures. The current paper presents current practices being adopted in India for prediction and excavation of tunnelling induced ground movement and building damage risk-assessment. The paper highlights empirical and numerical approaches towards predicting settlement induced damages on buildings during the tunnelling, detailed step by step methodologies for conducting building condition surveys, evaluating associated hazards, and adopting adequate building risk identification and mitigation methods. The paper also discusses associated technical and contractual challenges and highlights way forward to overcome them.

"The execution of classical building services in underground mining operations is more truth than myth. From small concrete foundations for conveyor belts to the construction of huge workshops for large machinery maintenance, nearly every operation requires building services. By creating such fixed facilities, these services ensure the efficiency of the production. A distinction must be made between fixed facilities which directly enable the production and auxiliary facilities which only indirectly support the production. The construction costs of such auxiliary facilities are often roughly estimated because they do not immediately contribute to mineral extraction. The research project ‘Development of a systematic cost-calculation method for building services in underground mines’ seeks to address the question: ‘Can the construction costs concerning fixed auxiliary facilities be neglected e.g. within a prefeasibility study?’ The presentation will show the monetary relevance and significance of these auxiliary facilities and introduce a guideline for cost estimators. PROBLEM DEFINITION The overriding interest of an underground mining operator is to exploit the commodity with the maximal quality by minimum cost and time expenditure. If a new operation shall be installed, it has to promise profitability. Therefore, predictive economic feasibility studies are performed in advance of installation. Herein, all cost expenditure for installation and operation of the future underground mine is determined and compared to the expected income by selling the raw material. The described interest of the mining operator is the starting point of the research project ‘Development of a systematic cost-calculation method for building services in underground mines’. While economic feasibility studies for future operations are focused on the profitable exploitation of raw materials and the efficiency of the accompanying necessary production processes, auxiliary actions are only considered rudimentary. Necessary production processes, as well as auxiliary actions regularly require classical building services, which are normally performed in construction business on the surface in the same manner. By performing building services like masonry or concrete works in underground mines, fixed facilities shall be set up in order to enable or support the raw material production. Production enabling fixed facilities are varying from small concrete foundations for conveyor belts or other infrastructural elements to upstream processing plants situated in the mine workings. While such fixed facilities are essential parts of the production process chain, supporting facilities underground shall increase the efficiency of the mining operation. Workshops, control rooms and social installations are only a few examples for supporting facilities. Those could be situated on the surface as well, but the efficiency increases significantly by installing them underground. Especially supporting facilities are evading from the main interest of the mine operator, since they are only indirectly connected to the production process. The building costs are oftentimes only roughly assumed."

Executives in the mining industry are facing dramatically changing market expectations on reporting and transparency regarding the environmental and social impacts of projects, supply chains and products. Companies increasingly need to disclose the governance procedures they have in place to ensure communities, investors, employees, and Indigenous partners are effectively managing social and environmental risks. These disclosure requirements begin during exploration and carry through to all stages along the project life cycle. This type of environmental, social and governance (ESG) disclosure is referred to as ESG performance by the investment community. ESG is not a new concept, and it builds on and is intertwined with many concepts such as corporate sustainability, corporate social responsibility, eco-efficiency, triple bottom line thinking, life cycle management and many others. This paper will explore how mining companies can develop a credible ESG governance approach and strategy that will reduce risk, open opportunities, and create value. This paper will summarise ESG trends and drivers, discuss the economics and investors’ perspective towards ESG, and outline leading ESG standards and guidelines of interest to investors, regulators, communities and other stakeholders. Linkage of ESG to global sustainability efforts such the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Global Compact will also be addressed.

Preliminary investigations of stone resources were conducted in the La Range, Johnson Lake-Pelican Narrows-Deschambault Lake and Creighton-Amisk Lake regions of Saskatchewan. The work identified a rich variety of accessible, attractive and technically promising stone resources. Ordovician dolomites in various combinations of red, buff, yellow, grey and purple are very dense and take a very good polish. These are classified as marbles in the industry and some rival the famous marbles of Verona, Italy. A wide variety of attractive granites have been identified. Among these is a jade green stone (charnockite) and ornamental banded granites (gneisses). A dark greenish to black stone (amphibolite) with white and red veining resembles the well-known Verde Antique variety of Vermont and Italy and surpasses it aesthetically and in engineering properties. Some of these stones have been displayed at Canadian and United States expositions where they received an enthusiastic response from the international stone industry. More detailed evaluation and test quarrying of promising deposits are required. Such work could be rewarding to the industry as some stone varieties in the province have the potential for gaining international markets.

Organisations are starting to develop processes for achieving sustainability principles they have defined for their organisation. The foundation for these principles is now well accepted. The definition of a sustainability framework is a good starting point for any project. The delivery of the framework requires the organisation to think differently about how project objectives can be met. New tools are becoming available to help achieve the sustainability outcomes for the projects. This paper will examine the project building blocks that are necessary to ensure the sustainability framework can be achieved for the project. These include new approaches to decision-making processes and evaluation tools and when to apply them. An integrated approach with shared expertise to project delivery, which is applicable to the whole supply chain, will be discussed. This will cover sustainability procurement, integrated waste management, cleaner production and eco-efficiency, sustainable products and disposal. A project toolkit will be presented and some key project tools identified. The need for management support in undertaking these new approaches is critical, as is the need to develop partnerships and cooperative management to facilitate delivery.

"Kenneth A. Huber, P.E., Langan Engineering & Environmental Services, New York, New York, USAThe dream to bring New Jersey Devils hockey to the largest city in New Jersey became a reality in the summer of 2005, when construction began for the Prudential Center in downtown Newark. The Prudential Center site encompasses an entire city block that had a varied history of uses ranging from a cemetery in the late 18th century, to a rail yard and train station for the now-defunct Central Jersey Rail Road in the 19th and early 20th centuries, to commercial development in the latter half of the 20th century. Each of these prior uses presented challenges to the design and construction of the Prudential Center that required innovative engineering solutions, including: archaeological investigation and exhumation of the former cemetery occupants, protection of historic buildings surrounding the site, and extensive demolition to remove old train bridge foundations.The design team was required to develop potential foundation systems for the arena. Several foundation concepts were evaluated for cost and constructability, including: driven piles, drilled shafts, and shallow foundations on improved subgrade. Following a detailed cost analysis and value engineering exercise, the decision was made to support the arena on spread footings following the completion of a multi-phased ground improvement program consisting of a combination of dynamic compaction and removal and replacement. To evaluate achievable allowable bearing pressure as part of the design, a dynamic compaction test section was performed within the building footprint prior to the start of production work; this resulted in an increase of the allowable design bearing pressure from 2 tons per square foot (tsf) to 3 tsf. This reduced the expected foundation costs by 30% and gained sufficient time in the schedule to allow for the completion of the arena in time for the New Jersey Devils 2007- 2008 hockey season.BACKGROUNDThe dream to bring New Jersey Devils hockey to the largest city in New Jersey became a reality in the summer of 2005, when construction began for the Prudential Center in downtown Newark. After several years of negotiating between the City of Newark, local landowners, area developers, and the Devils themselves, a deal was finally struck to erect Newark Arena, now known as the Prudential Center, right next to City Hall. This is not to say, however, that once the site location was finalized, that no further challenges were encountered in the construction of Newark’s new crown jewel."

In April 1997, Kiewit/Parsons Brinckerhoff (K/PB) completed the 7,600-m (25,000-ft) primary access tunnel for the Yucca Mountain, NV proposed high-level nuclear waste site. K/PB then began boring an exploratory east-west cross drift tunnel at the site. The 2,681-m (8,796-linear ft)East-West Cross Drift Tunnel was excavated through volcanic tuffs having zones of incompetent rock using a rebuilt Robbins 5-m (16.4-ft)hard-rock tunnel boring machine(TBM) with a special arrangement of supporting equipment. This portion of the Yucca Mountain project was completed in eight months.

"A significant addition to Canada's commodity export transportation capabilities is being built by Ridley Terminals Inc. on Ridley Island in the Port of Prince Rupert on British Columbia's north coast.Site preparation began in early 1982. By the end of 1983 the terminal will be receiving coal from two major new mines being developed in B. C.'s massive $2.5 billion northeast coal development.The RTI terminal will have initial capacity to transfer 12 million tonnes of coal a year from railcars to storage and to ships. Capacity will be doubled to 24 million tonnes as market opportunities are developed.The challenge of building this $220-million facility in less than 24 months, the benefits Canada has received from the work the project is generating, and the long-term faith in Canada that this project represents, are all part of the excitement which surrounds the Ridley Terminal and northeast coal developments.RIDLEY TERMINALS INC. (RTI) is building a very significant addition to Canada's commodity export transportation capabilities. The facility, on Ridley Island at Prince Rupert, on the north coast of British Columbia, is a key link in British Columbia's northeast coal development which in itself is a massive undertaking involving investment of some $2.5 billion. The entire project is making a substantial contribution to Canada's economy at a time when such contributions are sorely needed.The development is creating employment, not only in British Columbia where its various parts are being created by mining companies, railways and others, but also across the country where suppliers are manufacturing a wide variety of good s and equipment for the development's participants.The RTI terminal is no exception. It is a critical cog in this mega project's large transportation system and its construction is contributing substantially to job creation and to other economic activity, in the Prince Rupert area and in many other parts of British Columbia and the rest of Canada."

Recent advances in ruggedised industrial control system technology and architecture in combination with latest technologies in the fast-evolving 3D LiDAR sensor sector becoming available have enabled the implementation of sophisticated automation algorithms for mining equipment such as bucket wheel reclaimers, as published by the authors in the peer reviewed AusIMM 2019 Iron Ore conference proceedings. This paper provides an overview of a second use case for such automation technology in bulk material ports integral to iron ore operations. The real-time 3D machine-vision based port automation system described in this paper was originally developed for the BHP-Mitsubishi Alliance’s (BMA) Hay Point port. The system has seen deployment at other major mining and general ports in Australia, such as at Dalrymple Bay Terminal (DBT) (shown in Figure 1) managed by Dalrymple Bay Infrastructure Management (DBIM), Hay Point, Queensland. "The safe ocean transport of bulk commodities like iron ore, coal, nickel ore, manganese ore and bauxite by large bulk ships is vitally dependent on the stability of the cargo under the influence of wave induced ship motion. Safety standards are set by such bodies as the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) with recommended tests for the assessment of bulk commodities. Since the 1960s, the bulk cargo code (BC Code) commenced defining methods to determine the Transportable Moisture Limit (TML) for transportation of bulk commodities. By the latter part of the 1960s, three TML test methods were defined, namely the Flow Table, Proctor-Fagerberg and Penetration tests. All three tests were predominantly aimed at determining TML values for mineral concentrates.More recently, bulk commodity producers, Maritime Organisations and Port Authorities worldwide have been investigating whether commodity based TML methods better reflect realistic safe ship transportation than the current concentrate based TML test methods. In these investigations, the relationship between the mineralogical and particulate parameters of specific commodities with respect to cargo stability and moisture retention has provided insights into the development of tailored TML test methods. To this end, an AMIRA International project (P1097) undertaken by CSIRO, TUNRA Bulk Solids, the University of Newcastle and the University of Auckland assisted the IMO Technical Working group to investigate the relationship between iron ore fines characteristics and a new TML test specific for iron ore fines bulk cargoes.A review of the three standard concentrate based TML methods and characterisation studies of iron ore fines, as well as cyclic triaxial testing to determine liquefaction resistance, resulted in the development of a modified Proctor-Fagerberg method for determining the TML of iron ore fines. Of particular importance in determining TML is mineral composition, porosity, particle density and allowing time for moisture equilibration."
