Bacterial oxidation technology was successfully applied in a mine site pilot plant for the treatment of refractory gold concentrates. The bacterial culture was proven capable of selectively breaking down the refractory sulphide minerals to release the gold. Gold extractions greater than 90 per cent were possible when oxidised concentrate was leached with cyanide solution. The pilot plant was designed using data scaled up from laboratory testing and sized for transport by standard vehicles. The bacterial culture used to break down the refractory gold-bearing mineral was a natural mixed culture able to withstand temperatures up to 55¦C, thus making the technology particularly suitable for use in Australian and in some North American gold mining regions. The pilot plant was operated at the mine site over a six month period. Performance of the bacterial oxidation technology under site conditions was as predicted from the laboratory testing. It was demonstrated that the culture was robust under normal site condi- tions and that the culture could withstand wide variations in the feed and the operating conditions, while still achieving satisfactory oxidation levels. The technology was able to be utilised by site operators and supervisors with minimum intervention. Design data for a commercial facility was collected for a number of different concentrate samples and a feasibility study completed. Estimated capital and operating cost have been obtained.

This paper presents the details of the Bad Bergzabern tunnel project. This tunnel is the main part of the B427 federal road bypass, intended to improve the regional traffic infrastructure and to reduce the traffic load in the historic city centre of the health resort Bad Bergzabern. Located in the south-western part of Germany, the project area is situated at the eastern margin of the so-called Palatinate Forest, a low mountain region of mainly triassic sediments with a complex and variable geological history. The German federal government, represented by the office of mobility of Rhineland- Palatinate, awarded the contract to BeMo Tunnelling, a specialized Tunnelling company with a long history of innovation and success in NATM tunnelling. The contract includes the construction of two separate tubes with a length of approximately 1,44 km (0.9 mi)—the road (main) tunnel with a cross section of 101 m2 (1,090 sq ft) and a parallel rescue tunnel with a cross section of ca. 23 m2 (250 sq ft.) Both are connected by six cross passages. Tunnels and cross passages are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). Due to BeMo Tunnelling’s technical expertise and capabilities, the project team was able to engineer a speed-up concept that saves money and time for the construction team and client. This paper presents the innovative approach BeMo Tunnelling made to optimize the execution of the tunnelling works and the challenges the project team is facing with regard to a complicated geological situation, countermeasures against an increasing effect of climate change and volatile prices for construction materials.

The nature, usage and comparatively rare occurrence of ball clay is described. The importance of these white firing plastic clays in ceramics, particularly in the production of industrial sanitary ware and tiles, is emphasized. The US deposits are briefly discussed. What is known about relevant deposits in Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Venezuela (the four largest ceramic producers in South America) is also described. The ceramic plants have been sited near the centers of population rather than the plastic clay deposits. At present, extraction is probably concentrated on surface residual deposits and lenses which require minimum investment. Native plastic clays are used exclusively in the tile plants, but in sanitary ware, they are often used as extenders of imported ball clays.

The grinding circuit at PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara (PTNNT) – Batu Hijau mine consists of two SABC (semi-autogenous milling, ball milling, pebble crushing) trains, including four 20'?×?33'6? ball mills that have been lined with steel liners since the commissioning of the plant in 1999. During 2011 and 2012 an industrial trial was conducted to evaluate Poly-Met liners (a combination of rubber and steel liners). These new liners were installed in two of the ball mills (ball mills 1 and 2) and operated in parallel with ball mills 3 and 4 with steel liners.The objective of the trial was to compare the plant performance with the Poly-Met and steel ball?mill liners with regards to wear life, mill throughput, grind size and total unit costs. The trial was conducted over the entire life of the liners. The evaluation methodology implemented consisted of frequent spot sampling around the ball mill circuits, complete surveys/audits in both ball mills, and detailed analysis of process data. "Installation of a 3.6 km long raw coal conveyor in the Balmer open pit was undertaken to improve over-all haulage efficiency. This paper covers the rationale behind this project, system design and construction aspects and initial operating experiences. The majority of the construction work was performed by our own personnel. Where feasible, used equipment was installed to reduce capital cost and facilitate a tight construction schedule.BackgroundWestar Mining Ltd's Balmer Mine is located in the British Columbia Rockies, just outside of the town of Sparwood in the southeastern corner of British Columbia. The open pit mine, which has been in operation since 1969, currently produces about 6 million clean tonnes of coal per year, mostly for the metallurgical coal export market. Run-of-mine coal tonnages total between 9 and 9.5 million annually and waste removal volumes exceed 30 million bank cubic metres.The mine is a truck/shovel operation; loading equipment includes nine electric shovels, five front-end loaders and a hydraulic backhoe. The truck fleet consists of 40 units of 154-tonne, 181-tonne and 315-tonne capacity. The newer 154-tonne trucks are used for coal haulage for which they have been equipped , with tailgates to maximize their coal carrying capacity."

The existence of phosphate of lime within the State of Florida has been known for over a decade; but until the spring of 1887, the extent and value of its deposit.;, possibly with one exception, were unsuspected. In that year Col. T. S. Moorehead, induced by a statement made by Mr. J. F. Le Baron, examined the gravels of the Peace river, recognized the importance of the deposits, acquired such tracts as were regarded as desirable, and established the pebble-phosphate industry, making his first shipment in May, 1888, to the Scott Manufacturing Company, of Atlanta, Ga. The establishment of the pebble-phosphate industry upon Peace river was followed, a year later, by the discovery in Marion county of an entirely different class of phosphate, now commonly known as hard-rock phosphate. This discovery was made early in June, 1889, by Mr. Albertus Voght, in a well which he was sinking upon his place near the site of the present town of Donnellon, about 20 miles southwest of Ocala. To it, more than to any other cause, is due the rapid and remarkable development of the present great industry of the State. It was, however, Mr. John F. Dunn, of Ocala, who turned to advantage the accidental discovery of Mr. Voght. After acquiring a knowledge as to the chemical composition and value of the material, Mr. Dunn and hid associates purchased several thousand acres of land and organized the Dunnellon Phosphate Company for active operations. From Dunnellon as a center, prospecting rapidly extended in all directions, until at the present day important mines have been opened over a well-defined tract more than 200 miles long and about 6 miles wide. The Bradford Oil District lies in the northern part of McKean County, Pa., and the southern part of Cattaraugus County, N. Y. Although petroleum was first found in the producing sand in 1871, it was not until the early part of the year 1875 that a productive horizon was acknowledged to exist, even by those most largely interested in the production of the crude oil. It has been reported to me that the first well drilled in the valley of the Tuneangewant Creek (commonly called Tuna Creek) was drilled by F. E. Dean and brothers in 1865. This well was located on the Shepherd farm, near the present site of Custer City. One hundred and sixty feet of drive pipe was used, and the hole was drilled to the depth of 900 feet. The producing sand at Custer City is found about 1130 feet below the level of the railroad track. The Shepherd farm well was therefore abandoned over 200 feet above the top of the oil sand. The next well was drilled by the Dean brothers on the Clark farm at Tarport. Drilling was stopped at a depth of 605 feet, or over 400 feet above the top of the oil sand. In the year 1862 the old Bradford well, since known as the Barnsdall well, was drilled to a depth of 200 feet with a spring pole, and then abandoned. In the spring of 1866 the citizens of the village of Bradford concluded to club together and sink the Barnsdall well deeper. Since the late 1960's the Interstate Division for Baltimore City (IDBC) has been planning and developing the Interstate Highway System for the city to meet regional planning goals. The principal goals are to provide convenient access to the central business district and the port while diverting through traffic away from these congested areas. Interstate Route 95, an eight-lane highway carrying north-south traffic, has headed the city's priority list; during the 1970's its construction proceeded steadily from both east and west towards the harbor. Closing the final 8800-ft (2670-m) gap under the harbor will complete Interstate 95's construction. This final portion, known as the Ft. McHenry Tunnel project, will be built in nine construction contracts. Construction costs of the complete project are expected to exceed $700 million, making it the costliest single project in the Interstate Highway System. Full funding is being provided initially by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and the Maryland Department of Transportation will re-pay the 10 percent local share from toll receipts within the first three years of operation.

Some mining engineers are pursuing their destinies in places far removed from what they might have envisioned back in the classroom. The path they follow to work each day may wind down Wall St., Park Avenue, LaSalle, or Market; their offices are in modern skyscrapers which offer all the amenities-air conditioning, thick carpets, attractive decor, and executive lunchrooms, to name just a few. The papers on their desks are a combination of financial figures and feasibility studies. But even in these surroundings there are indications of what these men do and where their professional interests lie-minerals are everywhere, from vast collections to one symbolic paperweight. . . there are sometimes specks of dirt under fingernails from a recent on-site inspection, belying the traditional banker's garb. . . and there are the wistful comments about finding it necessary to get out in the field.

A 4200 ton-per- hour marine transfer terminal, where river and oceangoing vessels simultaneously exchange cargos of coal and phosphate rock, is now in operation near the mouth of the Mississippi. Its materials handling machinery includes a bucket ladder barge unloader; a rope operated clamshell bucket unloader; a coal loader; and a rail mounted bucket wheel machine. The design and operation of this equipment is described as are the docks and conveying, breasting and barge-haul systems in use at the facility. Design considerations imposed by soil and river conditions, geography, operating needs and investment requirements are discussed. The economic significance of design and shipping innovations introduced by this facility is noted.

Barite deposits located in Dinek and surrounding region have important economic features with their large reserve capacity for Turkey. The objective of this study is to elucidate geological and depositional characteristics in terms of. site investigation and chemical analysis. In order to do this, geological area of about 300 km2 was examined and detailed geological map was constructed. It was observed that Barite mineralization in these deposits was occurred in carbonate and pelitic rocks of Lower Cambrian-Lower Ordovician. Deposits were exposed to advanced diagenesis regional metamorphism and tectonics that rotated and deformed the barites; therefore, barites shows secondary veins, brecciate and fracturing structure. Even though, a few light isotope values of barites may suggest hydrothermal and exhalative sedimentary characteristics or possible mixing with magmatic fluids, generally heavy isotope values indicate that the sulfate ions were supplied from coeval seawater and, many of sedimentary features and petrological, geochemical characters support dominantly sedimentary origin.

The world's reserve base is adequate for at least 100 years at the current consumption rate. China, India, and the U.S. are expected to remain the leading producing countries. The U.S. will continue to be the largest consumer of the production. None of the known substitutes for barium sulfate are expected to impact existing applications. World production in 1995 was 4,410Mt. This is about 50% of the projected capacity. Consumption is directly proportional to hydro-carbon well installation activity. Imports are expected to continue to supply more than half of the U.S. requirements.

"IntroductionDuring 1994, Barrick Gold Corporation, or American Barrick at that period, acquired Lac Minerals Ltd. properties. One of them was the Bousquet Complex. The Bousquet Complex is divided into three distinct sites: one mine (Bousquet 2), one mill (Est-Malartic Division) and one analytical chemistry laboratory (Les Terrains auriferes).The Bousquet 2 orebody was discovered in 1986. An extensive drilling program was initiated during 1987. Its purpose was to define the orebody extent. At the end of 1997, gold production from Bousquet 2 mine reached 1 290 000 oz of gold from a cumulative tonnage processed of 4 175 000 M t.From 1980 to 1990, the Est-Malartic mill was used for the treatment of ore from the following mines: Bousquet 1, Doyon, Francoeur (Richmont mines), Buckshot and 1-20 stope. At present, the mill receives ore from the Bousquet 2 mine.HistoryThe Est-Malartic mill is located close to the town of Malartic in northwestern Quebec. The mill has been in production since the mid-1930s processing mainly clean, free mill gold ore. Active mining from the Est-Malartic mine ceased in 1979 and the mill was switched to custom processing of ore from La Mine Doyon located some 45 km to the west. This custom processing arrangement continued until 1987 when the expanded mill at Doyon became available to process all of the Doyon production. In 1987, Lac Minerals commenced development of a second mine at the Bousquet site located 40 km west of Malartic. This mine, Bousquet 2, is the down dip extension of the La Ronde mine developed by Agnico Eagle. During pre-feasibility evaluations, it was determined that it would be economically more attractive to modify the existing Est-Malartic mill than building a new facility on site. The Est-Malartic mill modifications for processing the high-copper/gold ore from the Bousquet 2 mine began in late 1989 and new circuits were commissioned in mid-1990. Modifications included the addition of both gravity and flotation concentration circuits to recover coarse, free gold and the copper. The existing leaching circuit continued to operate on the copper flotation tailings with some minor modifications to the solution handling systems. A S02/Air cyanide destruction circuit was also added at that time."

Barrick's growth and development plan will add three major new mines during 2005 including the Lagunas Norte Project in the La Libertad Province of Peru, the Veladero Project in the San Juan province of Argentina, and the Tulawaka Mine in north¬western Tanzania. Lagunas Norte and Veladero are similar in that they are both green-field open pit deposits at elevations over 4,000 meters above sea level, with two stage crushing and heap leaching followed by Merrill Crowe zinc precipitation for precious metal recovery. Operating sites will each generate in excess of 700,000 ozs Au per annum with commissioning and full scale operation planned during the third and fourth quarter of 2005. Details with regards to regional geography, development schedule, production and process specifics for Lagunas Norte and Veladero will be discussed in this presentation providing an overview for the respective properties.

"The primary objective of the Barrick Goldstrike expert system is to achieve the desired liberation size for the autoclave circuit while maximizing throughput. In addition, when downstream limitations (autoclave circuit or others) restrict the milling circuit tonnage the expert system further improves grinding product size. Since its implementation, the expert system has provided expected throughput improvements while improving or maintaining circuit performance.Barrick Goldstrike and MinnovEX Technologies Inc. teamed up to install an expert system to control Line I and I1 of the autoclave grinding circuits. The dissimilar equipments of the two grinding circuits coupled to different production objectives, skepticism among operators, and the variability of the ore types processed in each line challenged the implementation.To ensure implementation success, Barrick Goldstrike dedicated four administrators full time to the project. The system administrators included two metallurgists, a process control engineer and a mill trainer. As usual, the control room operators were the experts who provided the operational logic for the foundation of the control system. The administrators and all eleven of the control room operators signed off on acceptance of the system. Current online utilization is 95%.INTRODUCTIONThe grinding circuit for Barrick Goldstrike’s autoclave process consists of two SAG Mill Ball Mill lines. Line 1 grinding circuit is comprised of a 22 by 8 foot, 2500 horsepower Allis Chalmers (AC) variable speed SAG mill, followed by a 12.5 by 14 foot, 1250 horsepower AC ball mill, and a 13.5 by 18 foot, 1800 horsepower Dominion ball mill in parallel. SAG mill recycle from the primary discharge screen (+5/16 inch) is processed through a 1352 Nordberg Omnicone crusher (4.5 foot). A secondary SAG discharge screen (+1/8 inch) closes the SAG circuit. The ball mill circuit is closed with 6 Krebs super D20 cyclones. Line 2 grinding circuit is comprised of a 24 by 12 foot 4000 horsepower Fuller variable speed SAG mill followed by a 16.5 by 30.5 foot 5000 horsepower Fuller ball mill. SAG mill recycle from the primary discharge screen (+5/16 inch) is processed through a 1560 Nordberg Omnicone crusher (5 foot). A secondary SAG discharge screen (+1/8 inch) closes the SAG circuit. The line 2 ball mill circuit is closed with 12 Krebs super D20 cyclones. The underground Meikle ore is typically fed through Line 1. Achieving the desired product size is critical for successful processing of Meikle ore. Open pit Betze ore is fed to Line 1 when Meikle ore is unavailable. Line 2 processes Betze ore exclusively. Throughput is maximized when processing Betze ore as the product size is less critical. The products of these two circuits are combined as feed to the autoclave circuit. The ore types and the autoclave circuit demands determine the required grinding circuit product size and maximum combined mill feed tonnage."
