The McLaughlin Mine is a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of Northern California, U.S.A. Homestake adopted a proactive strategy in the permitting of the Mine. Extensive environmental baseline studies were undertaken. Engineering and process alternatives were evaluated for environmental impact along with other factors. A unique pressure oxidation process was selected. Screening studies were conducted as a basis for the selection of waste rock and tailings disposal sites. Project engineering and permitting were fast tracked. Construction required eighteen months, and the first gold bar was poured in March of 1985, six years after the initial discovery. Project facilities are designed and operated so as to minimize environmental impacts. A comprehensive monitoring program demonstrates permit compliance. Reclamation of the site is ongoing throughout the Mine's twenty year life. Nonmined lands are managed to maximize wildlife habitat value.

The prediction of damage to a structure that is to be undermined is generally a two step process. First, the expected ground movements (the displacements, slopes, curvatures, and strains) are estimated using available (often empirical) predictive methods or survey data from a site of comparable geology, topography, and mining geometry. Second, the prospects for damage to the structure are assessed by comparing the expected ground movements to tolerable limits, some of which appear in the technical literature as damage criteria. The inverse problem of relating observed building damage to causative ground movements involves essentially the same elements. In either case, the usefulness of published damage criteria to subsidence problems may be limited in all but the most elementary cases. This paper considers several cases where structural behavior and site specific details had to be taken into account in assessing the relationship between damage and ground movements.

Ground water inflow into a mine and the re¬sultant impact on district hydrology can be pre¬dicted on a site specific basis once the ground water flow systems at the site are sufficiently well under¬stood so that a valid conceptual model can be de¬veloped. Ground water flow systems are controlled by the hydrogeologic properties of the materials at the, site, including hydraulic continuity along flow paths, and boundary conditions. Preliminary delin¬eation of hydrostratigraphic units for conceptual models frequently can be based on surface water data; specifically, spring locations and the gain-loss reaches of streams. Quantitative predictions of mine water inflow and its impact on regional hydrology require col¬lection and analysis of numerous types of data. Hydraulic conductivity must be defined quantita¬tively both parallel and perpendicular to bedding as well as areally for each hydrostratigraphic unit. The characteristics of the Davis shale in case his¬tory number 2 illustrate this concept very well. The storage characteristics also must be determined for each hydrostratigraphic unit and the potential or hydrostatic head should be quantified vertically and areally for each unit. The potentiometric measure¬ments in the Bonneterre Formation as discussed in case history number 2 illustrate this point. The data collection and data analysis techniques constitute the weak link in the analysis of mine inflow and district impact. The technology for char¬acterizing a mine site in the field has lagged behind the technology for mathematical simulation; we at¬tribute this development to the fact that computer modeling is relatively inexpensive compared to field data collection and analysis. On-site tests provide the best means of quan¬tifying hydraulic conductivity parallel to bedding and the storage characteristics of the unit. Pump tests with multiple observation wells provide the best information from on site tests. Hydrogeologie boundaries can be located from such multiple well tests. Multiport piezometers provide a means for determining the vertical potential in a single borehole. Borehole geophysics can facilitate the def¬inition of hydrostratigraphic units. Vertical hy¬draulic conductivity is difficult but not impossible to quantify with existing field test methods; labo¬ratory tests of cores fail to give a value represent¬ative of the field situation. The storage characteristics of a confined (artesian) hydro¬stratigraphic unit can be difficult to quantify when pumping changes the confined unit to an uncon¬fined (water table) case after depressurization and dewatering. Transmissivity and storage coefficient can be approximated to some extent for given field con¬ditions by computer modeling if enough is known about hydrogeologic boundaries. Modeling can be used in a trial-and-error approach to match transmissivity and storage coefficients to existing water level data corresponding to estimated discharge rates. A solution can also be obtained using a tech¬nique referred to as the inverse method. Unfortu¬nately, such a solution is seldom unique. Fracture flow models exist but practicality usu¬ally necessitates reversion to a basic Darcy flow model. Data requirements for fracture flow models could be difficult to fulfill where fracture aperture, spacing, orientation, and length are required. Ob¬taining such data at depth prior to mining would be impossible for any mine simulation in fractured media. We are of the opinion that most fractured media simulations can be accomplished using con¬ventional Darcy flow models by viewing the field problem on a macroscopic scale. The real challenge is to delineate hydrostratigraphic units properly in the field. The question of whether a broken-up fault zone is an aquifer or a barrier boundary is seldom simple. The fractures usually can be treated as an equivalent porous medium in either case. Only a few techniques exist for predicting un¬derground mine water inflow. These techniques fre¬quently are designed to evaluate shaft or tunnel inflow under steady-state head conditions in a sin¬gle layer rather than in multiple hydrostratigraphic units. In October, November and December, teachers at the National Science Teachers' Association (NSTA) area conventions were lured to visit the Minerals Education Coalition (MEC) booth by the promise of free rocks, video tapes, and literature on earth science topics. Teachers were content to stand in lines that at times took as much as an hour and a half to progress through the exhibit. Adding to their interest was the opportunity to converse with people from the minerals industry who were staffing the booth. The MEC was formed by a group of associations and companies in the minerals industry. They felt the need to educate the public about the current-day minerals industry and how it affects everyone's life. The American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers, Inc. (AIME) underwrote the major expenses of exhibit space and exhibitor services at all three conventions in 1997. SME members have been active in staffing and chairing the NSTA exhibit booth. But they represented only about one-third of the volunteers for the booth. Additional volunteers were drawn from local minerals companies, associations, interested teachers and other support groups. (See donors list on page 64.) In 1997, the conventions were held in Pittsburgh, PA, Denver, CO and Nashville, TN. The local SME GEM Committees chaired Pittsburgh and Denver and The Rogers Group Inc. supplied the chairperson in Nashville. Each exhibit relies on a local committee to plan and run the booth. Support is available from the GEM Projects Coordinator at SME headquarters. Usually the chair of the committee is drawn from the local SME membership. It is easy to see why the MEC booth is so popular. Free literature, videos, posters, workshop packets and rock specimens were handed out to about 5,500 science teachers at the three sites. Feedback from the attending teachers was overwhelmingly positive: "Who do we thank for these great materials?" Some of those great materials included Caterpillar's outstanding donation of Common Ground videos and teacher packets for Pittsburgh, Denver and Nashville for every teacher expected to attend. Placer Dome sent enough What's a Mine coloring books and It Comes from a Mine activity books for teachers at all three sites. Newmont supplied all teachers with an excellent poster describing gold processing. Women in Mining Education Foundation had plenty of its classroom activity handouts. The American Coal Foundation provided a list of its educational materials that are given out free to teachers who request them on school letterhead. The National Mining Association had its Facts About Minerals and Facts About Coal available. US Borax provided the funding to reproduce the NMA black and white posters that were published as inserts in Mining Voice magazine. In addition, each site had other materials chosen by the local committees to round out their selections. At each exhibit site, committees raise between $8,000 and $12,000 in cash donations from industry to support the high overhead of producing this exhibit. Usually, there are between 12 and 18 different rock specimens representing a range of mineral ores from aggregates to the metal ores. The committee arranged to have these donated (along with the freight charges to ship them to the site). Literature is also donated by the industry. It covers a diverse spectrum from basic information on rocks and minerals to posters, flow charts, videos and coloring books. Other donations include storage space before the event, haulage of items to the hall and door prizes. These exhibits could not have been staged without the network of SME Local Sections and the able chairs and committees at each site. At this time, credit should be given to their extensive donation of time and effort.

The Garfield Mine is a legacy vanadium mine in western Colorado with multiple mine openings, waste rock piles, and adit seepages that Cyprus Climax Metals Company (a Freeport-McMoRan Inc. subsidiary) voluntarily remediated through the Colorado Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCUP). The process to obtain a No Further Action determination from the VCUP is presented. Water treatment of the adit discharge, which is not part of the VCUP, is also presented. The remedial action objectives (RAOs) included preventing direct human or biotic exposure to the waste rock and radiation emitting from the waste rock; reducing metal concentrations and radionuclide activities in adit discharge and keeping the discharge from leaving the site; maintaining the existing undeveloped character of the surrounding landscape; and eliminating the need for a stormwater permit. The design included regrading, installation of an infiltration barrier and rock cover, a diversion channel, and a biologically based passive remediation water treatment system. An initial lab-scale evaluation provided design criteria for the full-scale system, which consists of a sulfate-reducing biochemical reactor and post-treatment aerobic polishing cells. The system has been operational since construction was completed in late 2016. Results indicate that the treatment objective of 90% bulk removal of constituents of potential concern (COPCs) is largely being met. The system also provides year-round operation and non-point discharge of effluent. After 20 plus years of site investigations, the remedial action was completed in 2016 with all RAOs met and a No Further Action determination granted in 2018. INTRODUCTION The Garfield Mine is a legacy vanadium mine located approximately 11 miles north-northeast of Rifle, in Garfield County, Colorado. It was leased and operated intermittently from 1929 to 1975 but was never operated by Cyprus Climax Metals Company (Cyprus) (a Freeport-McMoRan Inc. subsidiary). Prior to reclamation, site features included: • six mine openings—five adits and a vertical opening; • two adits discharging mining-influenced water (MIW)— Adit 1 at less than 4 liters per minute (L/min) and Adit 2 at 7 to 10 L/min; • main waste rock pile (13,500 m3) and small waste rock pile (minimal volume); • debris (small structure, mattress, bottles, shells, etc.) indicating site used for recreational purposes; and, • unimproved road, which has been used to access forest fires.

Comminution, being the energy intensive part of a mining operation receives much scrutiny by cost controllers, CEO’s, investors and others as the mining industry goes “back to basics” to reverse the decline in productivity which occurred during the mining super cycle. Blasting is the first and lowest cost per ton stage in the comminution value chain. The basic principle that effective blast design can optimize fragmentation from the Run of Mine (ROM) ore muck pile to improve productivity through digging, loading and crushing to grinding and increase mine site profits has been well documented. Benefits of controlling fragmentation in the blast include reduced wear on equipment, faster loading, increased truck loads while detecting oversize rocks at the muck pile can reduce the frequency of a blocked primary crusher. A second basic principle is a measure of particle size distribution (PSD) at each unit operation in the comminution cycle allows engineers to manage blast design to produce fragmentation in the ROM ore most suitable to optimize downstream unit processes to improve mine site productivity and profits. Split-Online® systems have measured PSD of rocks on conveyors from the primary crusher to the SAG mill for over 20 years. Split-Engineering partnered with various mining companies to develop Split-ShovelCam® to automatically measure fragmentation from shovels and excavators working the ROM muck pile. This paper takes the reader “Back to Basics” by discussing the use of real time fragmentation analysis at the muck pile as an important parameter to optimize energy factors required for each blast. Case studies are given. INTRODUCTION The basics of mining are: • Explore for and find economic resources of valuable minerals • Mine rocks containing valuable minerals using blasting • Crush and grind rocks to liberate valuable minerals (comminution) • Recover valuable minerals for sale Comminution is an energy intensive process which accounts for a major proportion of mine site costs. Effective blasting can improve comminution and deliver significant reductions to mine site unit costs, (CEEC, 2016). Engineers, scientists, builders and even philosophers have long promoted the phrase “measure to manage”; the premise being “you can’t improve what you don’t measure”. Blast Engineers measure fragmentation in ROM ore for feedback to manage energy input in the design of blast patterns to optimize the ROM product size for downstream operations, whether they be for ROM Leach or feed into the primary crusher.

"DC Water’s First Street Tunnel (FST) is part of the $2.6 billion Clean Rivers Project designed to reduce the occurrence of combined sewer overflows into local waterways. Due to flood events in the Bloomingdale and LeDroit Park neighborhoods, the FST Project was accelerated by DC Water to mitigate future flooding by boosting storage capacity and thus relieving the undersized combined sewers.The FST Project was finalized in 2016 as a collaborative effort between DC Water, its consulting team consisting of Greeley & Hansen and McMillen Jacobs Associates, and the design-build team of Skanska, Jay Dee Contractors (SKJD) with WSP Parsons Brinckerhoff as the designer.Scope of project. The FST Project (Fig. 1) included four primary shaft sites, a large 6 m (20 ft) internal diameter, 823- m (2,700-ft) long bored tunnel and three adit connections from the off-line shafts to the large-diameter tunnel. The adits which vary in size and length, are the subject of this article. The Channing Street site (Fig. 2) was established as the main site for an Earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (TBM) and included a 49-m (160-ft) deep shaft with slurry wall support of excavation and 20-m (65-ft) internal diameter final cast-in-place permanent concrete liner. The construction sites at Adams Street, V Street and Thomas Street each consisted of off-line shaft structures tied to near-surface sewer diversion chambers and ventilation facilities. These three off-line shafts were connected to the large bored TBM tunnel via adit tunnels. Each of the three adits had a portion or the entire length excavated by sequential excavation method (SEM) in frozen ground.The Adams Street adit (Fig. 3) was constructed in two phases. The first phase is the 23-m (75-ft) long and 5-m (16-ft) diameter section immediately outside the drop shaft which also serves as the deaeration chamber and was excavated by SEM. The second phase which is 91 m (300 ft) long and 3 m (10 ft) in diameter was excavated by Micro TBM (MTBM) launched from within the permanently lined deaeration chamber. MTBM excavation commenced toward a reception chamber that was excavated by SEM from the previously bored FST TBM tunnel. This SEM excavation had a 5 m (17 ft) diameter and a length of 4.5 m (15 ft)"

This paper describes some of the results of a project for the design and demonstration of subsidence monitoring systems for underground coal mines. The project was designed to test monitoring systems described in an earlier feasibility report (O'Rourke and others, 1979). General objectives of the project were to develop reliable cost- effective monitoring systems for use above caving- type mining operations, over supported mines, and in urban undermined areas. Topics selected for discussion in this paper include a description of the instrumentation systems, the site conditions, problems of installation, resulting recommendations and an over- view of subsidence performance data obtained. There were some particularly difficult problems of installation to overcome at this site. Some of these could be experienced at any surface or under- ground project, others are probably more directly related to Western coal fields. Coal refuse slurry impoundments are dams constructed of coarse coal refuse to impound fine refuse (slurry) and water (25-30% solids). Both products are waste from coal preparation plants. A number of these structures in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky were investigated to determine embankment stability. During the investigation a variety of embankment designs were encountered. The investigation determined the soil and geological characteristics of the embankments and the sites. This was accomplished by a test drilling and monitor installation (observation wells and piezometers) program, geologic study, and large scale mapping which allowed sub-surface profiles of the embankments to be constructed. The laboratory testing program concentrated on textural classification of the coal refuse, permeability and determining strength parameters to be utilized in the stability analyses. For the stability analyses, the Modified Fellinius Slip Circle, Simplified Bishop Slip Circle and Analysis for Translational Failure -were utilized. In all stability analyses hydrostatic pressure and earthquake were considered. This investigation indicated that 62% of the embankments analyzed are in a stable condition. The coal seam mined, the type of roof rock, and the gradation of the refuse influence the degree of compaction obtainable and the permeability of refuse. The shear strength of coal refuse appears to be controlled by its composition, moisture content, degree of compaction, amount and grain size of fines present. This investigation demonstrated these em¬bankments should not be treated as pure state-of-the-art dams; consideration must be given to the particular properties of coal refuse and the total refuse disposal system. Refuse dim slurry impoundments generally lack the site se- lection phase that is standard practice with siting most other types of dams.

The Henderson Mine, a new large scale underground development, is being developed by AMAX. The mine site is located about 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado, adjacent to the east side of the Continental Divide. The mine's three access shafts are in a narrow alpine canyon at an elevation of 10,400 feet. The ore body of molybdenite is to the south of the shafts, 3,000 feet below the surface of nearby Red Mountain. The ore extends over 800 feet vertically and is about 1,700 feet by 2,200 feet horizontally. The eastern and southeastern boundaries of the deposit are still to be defined at the present time. Development mining is advancing at the mine site on a three shift, seven-day basis at the rate of about 2,000 feet per month. About twelve miles of heading have been driven at the present time, and work to sink No. 3 Shaft has started. Development mining was begun in 1967 with the sinking of No. 1 Shaft. This shaft is fully concreted, 23 feet in diameter and 2,441 feet in depth. It is the mine ventilation exhaust conduit. It is also used for development muck hoisting, stand-by mine water pumping and secondary access to the 8,035 foot level. This level is the mine exhaust ventilation level and was mined principally by conventional rail mining methods. From this one station at the 8,035 foot elevation a 5% ramp was driven to the initial production horizon at 8,100 feet with diesel rubber tired mining equipment. Subsequent mining has been entirely by mobile diesel equipment at the mine site.

The global mining industry has been proactive over the last decade in finding ways to embrace the concept of sustainability. However, legacy mine sites (which include abandoned derelict and orphan mine sites) across the world continue to present issues for the global mining community, governments, local communities and NGOs. Unfortunately there has been much less academic focus on this area of mining and sustainability. This paper seeks to address how principles of sustainable development can be used to guide the development of processes for addressing post mining landuse issues for legacy mining areas. This is being done using a case study area located near Ipswich, in southeast Queensland, Australia. This area has a 160 year history of coal mining, and was one of Queensland?s crucial early industries. Mining in the area ceased in 2003 leaving a degraded landscape covering an area in excess of two thousand hectares adjacent to one of the fastest growing urban areas in Australia. A sustainability criteria and indicators framework for post-mining landuse on legacy mined land, developed from current best practice used for measuring sustainability across a range of industries is being developed. A review of current best practice suggests the framework should: (1) consider in equal measure environmental, social and economic factors; (2) have a minimum number of indicators which should be easy to identify and measure; (3) must have indicators with a meaningful output; and overall, the framework must consider particular requirements of the site being investigated. Application of the framework to the case study area is an ongoing aspect of this research, and the results will be evaluated through the use of expert stakeholders.

FOREWORD In 1974, the Ministry of Housing and Reconstruction (The Client) which subsequently became the Ministry of Development and New Communities of the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt assigned responsibility to the Arab Contractors (Osman Ahmed Osman and Company) for the design and construction of the tunnels under the Suez Canal. For this project the Arab Contractors of Cairo and Tarmac International of London formed a joint Venture, called Osmac. Sir William Halcrow and Partners of London are responsible for the design of the Ahmed Hamdi Tunnel as a Sub-Contractor to the Contractor. The advisory consultant of the client is a joint Venture between Tippetts-Abbett-McCarthy-Stratton (TAMS) of New York and Arab Consulting Engineers (ACE) of Cairo. INTRODUCTION A site investigation was carried out between Km 141 and Km 150 Suez Canal chainage to determine the ground conditions relevant to design and construction of a road tunnel under the Suez Canal. A feasibility study included aerial surveying, geological mapping and the drilling of 8 boreholes. Detailed investigation included the drilling of 105 boreholes, sampling, piezometer installation, pumping tests, and the digging of trial pits and trial excavations. In-situ work comprised SPT, permeability tests and dilatometer tests. Laboratory testing included soil classification tests, compaction tests, California Bearing Ratio tests, shear strength determination and oedometer consolidation tests as well as chemical analysis of both soil and ground water. The investigation revealed that the ground conditions at the first proposed El Shatt site (Km 148.5) were not favourable for bored tunnelling, whereas they were more favourable at the southern El Shatt site (Km 150.0).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has had an ongoing interest in developing new reagent schemes for floating Stillwater, MT, chromite ore. Previous reagent schemes have been unsuccessful in achieving complete separation, primarily because little is known about the surface chemistry of the minerals in this ore. In order to design a rational reagent scheme, a study of the binding of various functional groups (R = -H, -OH, -CO2H, -NH2) on the two components (chromite and forsterite) of the Stillwater chromite was undertaken. Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Spectroscopy was used to determine the adsorption isotherm, from a cyclohexane solution, of spin-probes which contained the functional group of interest. This was complemented by studies of the saturation surface coverage of the spin probe on the two minerals. In each case, more sites existed on chromite than forsterite; however, the forsterite sites were more strongly binding for each functional group. The results are discussed in terms of their implications for flotation.

The geostatistical technique of conditional simulation is applied to measure the uncertainty in factor of safety predictions for soil slopes where there is incomplete knowledge of the spatial distribution of soil properties. A case study considers a natural clay slope in Canada. The sequential indicator simulation technique is used as a means for generating a series of spatial maps of soil properties for this site. These maps approximate random draws from the conditional probability density function that characterizes existing uncertainty in the spatial distribution. Factor of safety determinations are then made for each simulated map using the simplified-Janbu approach, where the computations are performed with a new computer program that can operate on irregular spatial profiles of soil properties specified on a discrete grid. A unique capability of this approach is the ability to generate the distribution of factor of safety conditional to the type, position, and value of existing site characterization measurements. This capability should reduce uncertainty in FS predictions.

Biology opens a new frontier for the mining industry. With rising environmental concerns, the need to couple conventional chemical and physical technologies with sustainable approaches is pressing. At Allonnia, we harness microbial processes to create innovative and environmentally responsible technologies with broad applications. The native microbial community (microbiome) remains largely unexplored at most mining sites, unlike the geochemical environment. The exploration of complex biological reactions that could transform mining technology is just starting and holds vast possibilities, spanning bio-cementation, carbon sequestration, ore beneficiation, water mitigation, bioleaching, metals recovery, and more. Allonnia has collected samples from mine sites in Australia, Africa, and North America to characterize the microbiome and uncover the genetic potential present in mineral-rich environments. We are evaluating microbial metabolites that selectively solubilize gangue from various ores. In addition, biological reactions hold promise as tailings stabilizers. Our early efforts illustrate exciting prospects for harnessing biology’s potential in mining.

Large mining companies use a number of sophisticated analytical techniques for introducing the element of risk into the valuation of mineral reserve sites. These methods include, but are not limited to, sensitivity analysis, computer simulation, conditional probability, and portfolio theory. Such techniques enable the managements of these large companies to have an awareness of the many possible ramifications of their investment decisions. On the other hand, small mining companies and individuals in the mining business, due to limited financial and technical resources, still rely primarily on single point estimates of the value of mineral reserves. These small miners introduce the aspect of risk only through the application of an appropriate "speculative" discount rate. This paper illustrates the application of a technique for the introduction of risk into investment analysis. The method appears to be most suitable for use by small mining companies and individuals contemplating a large investment in a new mineral reserve site.

A variety of modeling techniques can be utilized to forecast metal production at heap leaching operations. These approaches reflect a wide range of complexity, flexibility, time to implement, cost, and accuracy. For many operators, a spreadsheet-based modeling technique is attractive since the calculations are directly accessible, models can often be developed by site staff, and the results are generally easy to extract and interpret. The authors have developed a spreadsheet-based modeling technique that provides a high degree of flexibility, while still considering detailed operating information for ore properties, leach kinetics, scaleup factors, lift height, and in-heap metal inventories. The technique involves establishing kinetic leach curves for each ore type to characterize metal extractions, followed by application of separate metal recovery curves to define the rate at which leached metals exit the heap in pregnant solution, taking into account delays due to the in-heap solution inventory. At any point in time, the difference between total metal extracted and total metal recovered is equal to the in-heap inventory of the leached metal. This modeling technique is particularly useful for larger multi-lift heaps where delays in metal recovery are appreciable due to in-heap solution holdup. A variety of modeling techniques can be utilized to forecast metal production at heap leaching operations. These approaches reflect a wide range of complexity, flexibility, time to implement, cost, and accuracy. For many operators, a spreadsheet-based modeling technique is attractive since the calculations are directly accessible, models can often be developed by site staff, and the results are generally easy to extract and interpret. The authors have developed a spreadsheet-based modeling technique that provides a high degree of flexibility, while still considering detailed operating information for ore properties, leach kinetics, scaleup factors, lift height, and in-heap metal inventories. The technique involves establishing kinetic leach curves for each ore type to characterize metal extractions, followed by application of separate metal recovery curves to define the rate at which leached metals exit the heap in pregnant solution, taking into account delays due to the in-heap solution inventory. At any point in time, the difference between total metal extracted and total metal recovered is equal to the in-heap inventory of the leached metal. This modeling technique is particularly useful for larger multi-lift heaps where delays in metal recovery are appreciable due to in-heap solution holdup. The Jim Bridger Mine is operated by Bridger Coal Company and is located in Sweetwater County, 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Rock Springs, Wyoming (USA). The general location of the mine site is shown on Figure 1. Bridger Coal is a joint venture of NERCO Coal Corp, the operator, and Idaho Energy Resources Company. The permit boundary encompasses in excess of 20,000 acres (81 km2) and is nestled against the western side of the Continental Divide. Production started on July 3, 1974, and the mine has produced approximately 90 million tons (82 million t) while moving approximately 450 million cubic yards (344 million m3) of virgin earth. Annual production averages 5 to 7 million tons (4.5 to 6.4 million t) of run-of-mine coal. Coal is consumed on site by the Jim Bridger Power Plant, a 2,000-megawatt generating station, and the electricity is transmitted to the Pacific Northwest power grid (Oregon, Idaho, Northern California, etc.).
