THE THEME of my remarks provides a great deal of latitude. I shall therefore take advantage of the scope it offers to look at our industry across a broad spectrum. My observations reflect a Canadian mining man's varied career as a geologist, mine operator, geological consult ant and company executive in Canada and overseas ... under differing cultures, business environments and political jurisdictions. I was fortunate to come into this industry in the mid-1930's when it was characterized by great enthusiasm, drive and resourcefulness. It was the beginning of a burgeoning era of some 30 years' duration in which the individualist, the entrepreneur and the builder found ample room for expression. As I contemplate the environment in which we now have to operate and try to perceive what lies ahead, I find myself deeply disturbed. Something serious has happened to this industry along the way. It appears that our very success has been the source of our undoing. I believe it is useful to summarize our industry's basic strength at home as a take-off point f or assessing its position in world terms. I hope that I can focus on some of the things that, in my view, must be done for this industry and by this industry to restore Canada's historic role in the world mining community. The Canadian mineral industry provides 140,000 jobs. It pays the second -highest average weekly wages and salaries among the country's major industries. The output per employee in the mining industry is estimated at about three times that for the economy as a whole.

"Wireless technologies are permeating the mining and metals industry and enabling a myriad of benefits. With standards such as IEEE 802.11 for wireless devices and ISA100.11a for wireless field instruments protecting their investments, customers look to benefit from the cost and flexibility offered by wireless devices. Using wireless field instruments, plants are eliminating the costs associated with wired system by 50 to 70% and using these savings to install more field instruments, which, when used smartly, enables them to optimize their processes efficiency and equipment reliability. Wireless also empowers a mobile workforce by allowing them to have access to key process and maintenance data directly from the field. This paper describes how wireless can help operations and maintenance personnel to be more effective. "A comprehensive geotechnical characterization has been undertaken at the El Teniente mine to describe and determine the rock mass behaviour strength properties of the primary copper ore. The Synthetic Rock Mass (SRM) modelling approach is used to simulate the mechanical behaviour of this heavily and unfractured rock mass. The micro-parameters of the model have been calibrated against mechanical properties and scaling laws for intact rock and veins, in order to represent virtual samples of four different geotechnical units. Results can be used to predict the rock mass scale effects, anisotropy, and brittleness properties that cannot be obtained using empirical methods.INTRODUCTIONThe primary copper ore at the El Teniente mine is described as very competent and massive, given that it exhibits a brittle behaviour (Rojas, Cavieres, Dunlop, & Gaete, 2000). This description is coherent with the geological description of the rock mass, which does not have discontinuities match as the definition provided by International Society of Rock Mechanics (ISRM, 1981). Only faults can be classified as discontinuities, but they are widely spaced. The primary copper ore has a high frequency of veins, where the cooper mineralization is hosted, these vein network structures are known as stockwork. Soft veins containing weak minerals as infill (chalcopyrite and anhydrite) control the disassembling of the rock mass during caving (Brzovic & Villaescusa, 2007).Presently, there are mainly two traditional methods used to estimate the strength of the rock mass: 1) determination of the strength envelope of the rock mass using scaling parameters from laboratory tests and 2) using numerical modelling based on back analysis of previous experiences of failure observed and measured in mining or civil excavations. The primary copper ore of El Teniente mine has no fractures; therefore, it is difficult to determine a rating that would enable to scale laboratory data, such as, RMR (Laubscher, 1977) or GSI (Hoek, 1994). This is the reason why the first option is not valid unless the entry data is manipulated or adjusted in order to obtain reasonable results. The second option requires, in general, a good characterization of a previous failure event in the rock mass, which is not always available. In recent years, new techniques of numerical modeling have been developed (PFC3D, ELFEN, Abaqus). Those methodologies are the third way to estimate the strength of the rock mass, but they are still in development. Particularly, the concept of SRM developed by Itasca is implemented in this study (Pierce, Mas Ivars, Cundall, & Potyondy, 2007; Mas Ivars et al., 2011), aiming to capture the real behaviour of the rock mass."

In-pit Crushing and Conveying (IPCC) is increasingly being considered by mining companies as a means to reduce their dependence on trucks and thus, fuel, tires, labour, etc. There is potential for great savings in operating costs which ultimately can mean better economics for a mining project. Vale has considered the application of IPCC at its Moatize coal project in Mozambique. Up to three studies have been conducted with the latest, at a pre-feasibility level, showing some promise. This paper explores the mine planning and IPCC engineering elements required in an IPCC study, their application to the Moatize project, and the drivers which most impact the viability of IPCC at Moatize.

When underground extractions occur beneath or in close proximity to valleys and other forms of irregular surface topographic features, the observed vertical subsidence at the base of the valley is less than that would be expected in flat terrain, while the valley sides are observed to move inwards towards the centre of the valley. The reduction in subsidence at the bottom of the valley is referred to as upsidence and the convergence of two sides of the valley is termed valley closure. Research coupled with mining experience over the past few decades in Australia has identified valley closure subsidence as being very real and quite significant part of non-conventional subsidence effects, which always have adverse effects on natural features, with risks to water flow and aquatic ecosystems. In this paper, we describe a threedimensional numerical modelling approach to investigate the geomechanical mechanisms which cause the valley closure subsidence behaviour, using distinct element computer package 3DEC. The calibrated models can accurately predict subsidence and horizontal displacements, and they are subsequently extended to specifically study the effect of a series of mining geological and topographical factors on valley closure subsidence phenomenon, by developing a range of hypothetical scenarios. Previous analyses carried out using a two-dimensional numerical modelling technique have identified the potential parameters that affect the valley closure subsidence, which mainly include longwall position, horizontal stresses, valley sloping angle, and valley shape. Further three-dimensional analyses regarding the relationships between the major factors and valley closure subsidence are discussed in this paper. The results have significant implications with regard to both the underlying mechanisms that lead to this nonconventional subsidence behaviour, and how these should be incorporated in future valley closure subsidence prediction and mitigation of its impacts on natural features.

Abstract -The Riviera tungsten occurrence in the Cape Province of South Africa was discovered in October 1979 as a result of stream-sediment panned concentrate sampling. The Cape age granite and late Precambrian Malmesbury Group carbonates and chlorite schists which it intrudes and which host the mineralization are covered by between 10 m and 30 m of Tertiary/Recent alluvium and clay. The scheelite/powellite and molybdenite mineralization occurs in a greisenized granite cupola with an overprint of porphyry-type alteration as well as in minor skarns. The ore reserve is estimated to be 46 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.2160Jo W03 and 0.020% Mo. The deposit is uneconomic at current tungsten prices.

A novel electrochemical half-cell and corresponding working electrode were designed to evaluate the electro-catalytic activities of catalysts in an environment close to that of an operating proton exchange or polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEMFC). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques were employed using the novel cell to characterize various methanol electro-oxidation parameters that contribute to the overall reaction on a fuel cell anode. The effect of temperature on methanol oxidation kinetics was examined in the potential range of 0.31 to 0.65V (vs. NHE). The data was collected in the temperature range of 20 to 80°C. Based on the experimental analysis and literature data, an equivalent circuit model (ECM) for methanol oxidation was proposed and was used to fit the EIS experimental data. The experimental data and ECM electrochemical data was used to extract electrochemical kinetic parameters for methanol oxidation such as the exchange current density, Tafel slope, and energy of activation for the reaction. Kinetic data, especially at different temperatures, is very limited in the literature.

In this paper, the compressive strength and failure patterns of reinforced cemented paste backfill (CPB) were studied aiming to promote the stability of backfilled stopes. The concept of ductile backfill was proposed and a series of unconfined compression tests were carried out on both non-reinforced and reinforced cemented paste specimens. Portland cement (3% to 5% by weight of tailings) and five different types of ductile materials (0 to 0.5% by weight of solids) were employed in this experiment for the specimen preparation. The test results showed that inclusion of ductile materials enhanced the unconfined compressive strength (UCS), reduced the post peak stress loss and transformed the failure behaviour of specimens from classical brittleness to ductility. The strength of CPB reinforced with different proportions of polypropylene fibres was compared. The stress-strain curves illustrated that both cement and fibres contributed to the increase of UCS, but higher strain values at the peak stress were achieved by fibre reinforcement. CT sliced images acquired from X-ray computed tomography (CT-scan) demonstrated that the reinforced specimen developed irregular crevices at the edge of cross sections and gained the capacity of bearing large displacements owing to the mobilised tensile strength of fibres. It leads to the potential of avoiding unexpected falling blocks of CPB when adjacent mining occurs. This finding highlights a strategy to improve the self-supporting capacity of the fill mass with less cement usage and reduce the ore dilution rates when excavating to adjacent stopes.

"Special salt protection rings containing a water-swell• able, polymeric sealant are in successful operation in Canadian potash shafts. Installed above the Prairie Evaporite salt formation at a depth of 3,000 feet, the sealant is preventing formation water migration into the salt and pressure build-up on the concrete lining of both production and service shafts. The salt protection rings are not under the hydrostatic pressure of the formation water.The chemical sealant in use has the unique property of imbibing water and swelling. •Therefore, any water at• tempting to flow by the seal ring actually produces a tighter seal.The purpose of this paper is to discuss the sealant and its properties and uses. Installation of the material and its operation in two Canadian mine shafts is described."

Due to high crack sensitivity of slab product of gas and oil line pipe application, its steel making process and alloy composition were evaluated and then improved to overcome its critical solidification process and reduced surface defects. The study was conducted at Slab Steel Plant Krakatau Steel. The purpose was to improve slab surface quality by reducing surface defects so that the slab surface doesn't need to be totally repaired. The method applied was by performing plant trial process, which the secondary process parameters such as alloying method and the casting parameters such as casting powder selection, metallurgical cooling, mould level control, and superheat were continuously monitored and then adjusted to the surface quality of the product. Based on the calculation of Ferrite potential of the steel, the chemical composition was designed to achieve optimum casting parameters in order to avoid high shrinkage during solidification. The results of the study are decreased surface defect quantity, and smooth casting process. The quantity of crack decreased by almost 90%. The slab surface repairing was significantly reduced from 85. % to less than 10%. These new casting parameters and developed alloy composition are then used and standardized for the mass production of the steel.

IN every co al mine the hazard of fire in the underground workings is always present. This is a natural condition, because the mineral wrought and the supports normally used are themselves combustible and because underground fires may originate in many ways. The main causes of such fires are: (1) Open lights igniting gas, wood, or the coal itself. (2) Explosives igniting gas or coal. (3) Spontaneous combustion. (4) Electric sparks or short circuits igniting gas, wood, or coal. (5) Frictional heat igniting wood, coal, or oily material. (6) Explosions of gas or coal dust igniting wood or coal. The relative importance of these causes, and others less frequently met with, varies from district to district and depends to a great extent on the equipment and supplies used, on the training and discipline maintained among the workmen, and on the liability of the coal to heat spontaneously. It follows, therefore, that open lights should not be used and that, wherever there is the least possibility of methane being encountered, only locked safety lamps of an approved type should be allowed underground. It follows, also, that only 'permitted' explosives should be used and that the it use should be confined to conditions under which they are ?permitted?. Similarly, electric equipment should be of an approved type and all such stationary equipment should be housed in well-ventilated fireproof rooms. Such rooms, as well as entries to stables and oil houses, should be provided with doors which can be easily and tightly closed and which should be constructed of fireproof material.

Details of the interactions between the environment and the growth of terrestrial plants may be complex and difficult to study. This paper focusses attention on some of these complexities by means of six examples, each of which provides information on an aspect of the interaction between the growth rate of plants and the chemistry of the environment. The relationships which exist between the information obtained from these examples and the concepts of "holism" and "transfer rate problems" are pointed out and the importance of long-term biog•eochemical studies in Canadian environments is stressed.

"This paper details the process and methodology followed to rehabilitate a rectangular ventilation shaft, situated in the Free State region of the Witwatersrand Gold Fields in South Africa. The shaft consists of seven compartments where self-mining of the sidewalls had taken place and damage to the decayed steel work in the shaft had taken place, thus limiting access down the shaft. The paper will provide some insight into the successes and challenges encountered during the project and may provide some learnings for future projects of a similar nature. INTRODUCTION The ventilation shaft forms part of the Phakisa Mine, situated in the Welkom area of the Free State province of South Africa, and is located in the Southern part of the Witwatersrand Basin, one of the world’s largest known and richest gold deposits (Figure 1).As is typical in South African gold mines situated in the Witwatersrand basin, the shaft is 1 770 metres deep (below collar). The shaft was sunk during the early 1940’s and comprised a rectangular shape with 7 compartments, used for both rock hoisting and men and material winding, respectively, with a single lift “Mary-Anne” compartment. Early in 2003, the mine decided to change the shaft from a downcast hoisting shaft to an up-cast ventilation shaft. The conveyances, ropes, winders and headgear (head frame) were removed and replaced with a high volume fan delivering 323m³/s of air at a pressure of 4.2Pa on surface. The up-cast velocity in the shaft was 6.5m/s, however this reduced significantly with the scaling of the shaft and the restrictions at shaft bottom. Although Harmony had converted the shaft from a downcast service shaft to an up-cast ventilation shaft some years back, the shaft steel work in the barrel of the shaft was left intact. Over the years, the steelwork in the shaft had decayed (rust and grime) and portions of this steelwork fell down the shaft. Concurrent with the decaying steel work, portions of the shaft lining had collapsed and it was getting progressively worse."

ABSTRACT In a nickel smelting process, large amounts of off-gas emissions are generated, which can cause serious environmental and plant hygiene problems if not properly treated. With increasingly stringent environmental regulations, an enhanced understanding of well-controlled, off-gas cleaning systems is vital. In this paper, dynamic models for an industrial smelter, off-gas system tackling hazardous sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide are developed using mass continuity, momentum, and energy conservation laws. The effect of air in-leakage is explored under different operating conditions. The developed models provide an enhanced process understanding and a necessary basis for highperformance control analysis of smelter off-gas systems.

An in situ water sampling device has been developed to measure biologically-available or “labile” metals in natural waters and effluents. The active mechanism involves the use of a polyacrylamide gel layer to quantitatively control metal transfer to a trace-metal-adsorbing, gel-imbedded resin. Because the resin only adsorbs free metal ions (the gel sampler methodology is a kinetic speciation technique), and because metal bioavailability is related to the free-ion activity, the device provides a direct measure of the biological-availability of metals in the environment sampled. The prototype consists of a layer of ion-permeable polyacrylamide gel which separates the solution to be sampled from an ion exchange resin. Because approximately 90% of the polyacrylamide gel is water, mass transport through the gel is diffusion-controlled, and is therefore well defined. Metal ions are rapidly bound by the resin, creating a steep concentration gradient in the gel. The amount of labile trace metal that accumulates on the resin can be related directly to the concentration of the metal in solution, the exposure time and the molecular diffusion coefficient of the labile species. In addition, the passive nature of this device affords it the potential to address many of the limitations presented by conventional sampling methods, such as sample contamination introduced during collection or filtration and changes in trace metal speciation prior to analysis. Laboratory studies and limited field trials indicate that the sampler behaves as anticipated and illustrate that biologically- available metal concentrations in many environments are a small fraction of the total concentrations and often significantly less than the dissolved concentration. The implications of this on regulatory criteria are discussed. Additional field trials and correlation with bioassays are currently underway.

ABSTRACTA series of algorithms were developed to perform geometric and kinematic analyses of cable shovel dipper-ground interactions for a given set of mining face conditions. The routines examine and analyze (a) the position of the dipper in relation to the shovel; (b) the dipper in relation to the face conditions; (c) the dipper position in relation to possible interference or collision with crawler tracks during digging cycles; and (d) kinematic and geometric considerations with respect to any point on the dip-per as it conducts a duty cycle. In all cases, field measurement verifcation provided good agreement(within 4% variance).

Denison Mines Corp. (“Denison”) has a 90% interest in the Wheeler River Uranium Project (“Wheeler River”) located along the eastern edge of the Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan between the Key Lake mill and the McArthur River uranium mine. The project is host to the high-grade Phoenix and Gryphon uranium deposits, discovered by Denison in 2008 and 2014 respectively, which include combined Indicated Mineral Resources of 132.1 million pounds U3O8 (1,809,000 tonnes at an average grade of 3.3% U3O8). The Pre-Feasibility Study (“PFS”), completed in accordance with NI 43-101 in September 2018, is highlighted by the selection of the In-Situ Recovery (“ISR”) mining method for the development of the Phoenix deposit, with an estimated average operating cost of $4.33 (US$3.33) per pound U3O8. Phoenix is the highest-grade undeveloped uranium deposit known globally, including Indicated Mineral Resources of 166,000 tonnes at 19.1% U3O8 for 70.2 million pounds U3O8. The paper aims to provide a summary of Wheeler River and an overview of the proposed development of the Phoenix and Gryphon deposits according to the PFS completed for the Project. Further details regarding the PFS, including additional scientific and technical information are described in greater detail in the NI 43-101 Technical Report titled "Pre-Feasibility Study for the Wheeler River Uranium Project, Saskatchewan, Canada" dated October 30, 2018 with an effective date of September 24, 2018. A mathematical model of a decision is represented by the table in Figure 4. The numbers in the matrix are a measure of the effectiveness of each alternate for an objective. In this case, it is the per cent of desired profit that is satisfied by each alternate for each objective. By adding all of the values in a row, we have a measure of which alternative is best for both objectives. However, if you think that alternate 1 is necessarily better than alternate 2, you are wrong. Why? Because the weight of the objectives may not be equal. It could just be that this plant can sell more than it can produce, so that the loss in profit represented by increased sales is more than twice as important as reductions in costs. (See Figure 5). In that case, let us weigh objective 1 as 30 per cent and objective 2 as 70 per cent. It must also be obvious that the sum of all the "objective weights" must equal 100 per cent. "Cominco Copper Division's Valley Mine is located in the Highland Valley of British Columbia, approximately 275 km by air northeast of Vancouver. The nearest towns are Logan Lake, located IS km to the east and Ashcroft, located about 50 km to the northwest.Preproduction stripping of rock and overburden at the Valley Mine's Lake Zone Pit began in mid-1982 following a decision to discontinue mining in the adjacent Jersey Pit. Equipment and mining methods were carried over from the Bethlehem Copper operations which, with Valley Copper Mines, were merged into Cominco in December 1982.Blasting practices, as carried over from the Bethlehem pits, were designed to provide the fine fragmentation required to meet production requirements using the Bethlehem crusher. However, after mining the first few benches of the Lake Zone Pit, it became apparent that overblasting at the pit limits was causing a number of bench failures, as well as contributing to an over-all reduction of the material strength of the rock mass forming the southwest wall of the pit.With present ultimate pit plans calling for the southwest wall to be as high as 300 m, Valley staff realized that potential slope stability problems should be dealt with as early as possible. This philosophy would enable experimentation on phase pit walls in order to attain the optimum slope angle on the ultimate pit wall.As part of an over-a ll slope stability program, a controlled blasting program was initiated at the Lake Zone Pit in March 1983. In this program, Valley engineering and production staff worked together with Golder Associates in establishing design criteria and evaluating the results. This program resulted in a marked improvement in the soundness of pit walls while maintaining the required degree of fragmentation."

"INCO LIMITED'S Shebandowan Mine and Mill is located in a scenic tourist and cottage area near the western tip of Lower Shebandowan Lake, approximately 90 Km west of Thunder Bay, Ontario. This nicely designed complex is a positive indication that mining operations can co-exist in harmony within the natural environment.The Shebandowan complex processed nickel-copper ore from 1973 to 1985, inclusive, after which operations were shut down.In late 1988, INCO LIMITED decided to place the Shebandowan complex back into operation, under contract, to mine and mill the remainder of the ore body, according to their specifications. MaclSAAC'S EXPLORATIONS was the successful bidder for the project. Following preliminary rehabilitation, operations were re-activated in late March, 1989. The ore mined to date is of a moderately lower nickel grade than the majority of previous years. However, a higher tonnage rate, combined with improved nickel recoveries, has contributed to a viable operation.A series of mill operating and equipment modifications has enabled MaclSAAC EXPLORATIONS to achieve the quality and grade of nickel-copper concentrates specified, and at the same time, expand mill tonnage throughput while attaining increased nickel recovenes."
