Mining ventures are essentially risky businesses. Explorers and project developers (plus their investors and financiers) attempt to minimise the risks involved or at least manage them. Core considerations are the obvious technical and commercial risks, but the socio-political system and regulatory environment in which the project will operate can be more important. Successful mineral investments in a country depend upon obtaining realistic and reliable technical results in a country that provides certainty, to gain and maintain investor confidence in a project. Brief commentary is provided on the usefulness of professional accreditation and ethics plus other specific reporting codes (eg JORC/VALMIN Codes) in reducing risks by reinforcing high technical competence and reputable individual professional behaviour (particularly in the context of currently perceived high corruption levels in so many countries). These various risk components are reviewed, especially in a global context, to showcase New ZealandÆs current position. Successful projects are those which provide investors with credible and reliable optimal results in less volatile environments because investors/lenders hate uncertainty and surprises even more.

Top down constructed large diameter (up to 90 m [300 ft]) shaft design and constructability issues present an interesting suite of challenges and opportunities highlighted in this paper. The study covers 2D and 3D finite element models used to: analyze various failure modes, evaluate the shaft liner and internal structures? response to seismic loading, assist in segment design, and assess final structural design tradeoffs. Efforts to achieve economic advantage over conventional heavy civil practices have prompted innovative solutions for ring and segment design, ring build assembly, and annulus backfill grouting. Intended for soft ground conditions, relationships between soil parameters and structure design are also explored.

Peng The highlights of this paper are : • The shield supports with lemniscate links will exert a tangential force on the roof strata, causing unnecessary and harmful roof movements, thus damaging the roof structure. The principal source of the tangential force is the horizontal movement of the point O, the pivotal joint between the canopy and the caving shield. When the support height is changed during setting, the point O will move along a curve upward and rearward toward the gob. As a result, it produces a vertical movement, causing the roof to move up a distance of ?d, and a horizontal movement toward the gob, creating vertical fractures in the roof. • The major purpose for employing the lemniscate-link system is to protect the hydraulic legs against the action of the bending moments induced by the tangential force that causes deformation or destruction of the legs. • Based on these two points, the author suggested that, in order to eliminate the harmful effects of the lemniscate-link system and strengthen its advantageous features, a shield support with a new design of that mechanism has been developed. With the new design, the conventional rigid lemniscate links are replaced by hydraulic rams. When the pressure inside the rams reaches a certain level, the ram will yield.

By direct aging treated, creep properties measurement and microstructure observation, the influences of the direct aging treatment on the creep behaviors of Hot Continuous Rolled GH4169 superalloy are investigated. Results show that the creep resistance of Hot Continuous Rolled GH4169 superalloy may be obviously improved by directly aged treatment. Under the applied stress of 700MPa at 660, the creep lifetime of the alloy is enhanced to 126h from 60h. During hot continuous rolling, the deformation features of the alloy are the twinning and the double orientations slipping of the dislocation activated within the twinning regions. After direct aging treated, the alloy displays a smaller grain size, and the finer g² phase is dispersedly precipitated in the matrix of the alloy, which is thought to be a main reason of enhancing creep lifetime of the alloy.

In New South Wales, development applications for major coal mining proposals are determined by the Minister for Planning and Environment and applications for mining leases and other mineral titles are dealt with by the Minister for Mineral Resources. The environmental conditions placed on the development consent, the coal mining lease and the approvals and licences under the pollution control legislation, amount to a substantial component of any new project's planning and commissioning considerations.An outline is presented of the framework within which various approvals are granted and conditions for environmental management are imposed upon mining projects. The principles and concerns, as perceived by the regulatory authorities, on which the majority of approval conditions are based are also outlined.No attempt has been made to analyse the extent to which these principles or standards are achieved in practice, nor to discuss the degree to which some of the conditions are achievable with the current status of technology and economics in the coal industry.

A new strain of Thiobacil/us ferrooxidans (SPK I) has been isolated which has a higher copper to iron release ratio (2.04) than the standard T ferrooxidans (CPBI) (1.12). The diminished iron oxidizing ability enables almost quantitative release of copper (93 per cent) from a chalcopyrite-rich concentrate without interference by iron reprecipitation. In a single batch leach, Bougainville copper concentrate yielded 9.3 grams/litre soluble copper from a 4 per cent w/v suspension in 100 days at 32°C.Solvent extraction recovery of soluble copper is recommended as a final step in a leaching process.

Over the next several years, the storage capacity of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago?s Tunnel and Reservoir Plan will be increased by 14.8 billion gallons through the addition of two large off-line reservoirs: the McCook and Thornton Reservoirs. The Thornton Reservoir will be constructed at the terminus of Calumet TARP System. The constructed TARP system will be connected to the Thornton Reservoir via connecting tunnels and gates systems. The connecting tunnels will comprise of: an upgradient transition tunnel, steel lined bifurcated tunnel for conveyance and control of flow, downdradient transition tunnel, and energy diffuser at tunnel portal. A large, approximately 250-foot-long, 69-foot-wide, and 40-foot-high, rock cavern will be excavated at an average depth of 320 feet to house the bifurcated tunnel system and associated six large control gates, each 12.5-ft by 28-ft wheel gate. Presented in this article are discussions about the TARP system, the Connecting Tunnels and gates Project, regional rock conditions, evaluation of reservoir?s wall stability for evaluation of tunnel penetration, and design challenges facing during design of the: rock cavern hosting the bifurcated tunnel system and gates and associated tunnels and shaft.

Production of metallic wires directly from liquid jets would avoid drawbacks of extrusion (space needed, damaging, cost?) and enable recycling. But liquid jets tend to break, due to capillary instabilities, unless a solid layer (coating or start of solidification) surrounds it. We recently developed a process to produce tin wires, cooled by water flow parallel to the jet. Superficial oxidization of tin produces a glass coating around the jet. Studies showed the length of wires increased when increasing speed of tin jets, and that water average speed should be the closest possible to the jet one to have smooth fibers. Producing 1 mm diameter wires is possible. The length of wires is limited by the experimental setup, which does not provide possibilities to coil the wire. Most of other metals do not generate glass-like oxides. The lack of coatings makes it necessary to reduce the capillary instabilities to obtain fibers.

"Abstract The economic and safe design of deep foundation systems in difficult soil conditions is based on a reduction of construction material used, construction time spent, energy consumed and a high-level modelling of the soil-structure-interaction. The special foundation system Combined Pile- Raft Foundation (CPRF), in-situ load tests on the construction site and a sufficient soil investigation allow cost optimised constructions. In any case at challenging projects the observational method has to be applied for verification and quality control of the design. Regarding the 4-Eye-Principle as basis of the quality control management an independent peer review of the planning, design and construction phases is the guarantee for safety, serviceability and optimisation of all projects. Main execution standards for the construction of deep foundations based on the Eurocode 7 are summarised and discussed. The paper presents the basics of the safe and qualified design and construction of foundation systems including quality assurance. The legislative operating environment, or the mineral regime, that a country has to offer is one of the key determinants that a company wanting to invest in an area takes into account in formulating its investment decision.   The New Zealand Government recognises this and the importance of getting the regime right in order to provide for continuing investment in mineral exploration and mining in New Zealand . In recent years, the Government has given considerable attention to developing legislation which provides for investment to take place; for those making the investments to have a stable, fair and open investment environment with government intervention only when considered absolutely necessary because other approaches are not working; and for the people of New Zealand to know that investment must meet acceptable health and safety standards and have acceptable impact on the environment. Also of key importance is having a clearly defined mining regime which includes rules on how to obtain a permit and rules in respect of ongoing permit compliance, rights to develop a mineral resource and permit conditions (in particular, the royalty regime). In New Zealand , these matters will all be addressed in what are referred to as 'minerals programmes'.   The Crown Minerals Act 1991, which is the legislation governing the allocation and management of permits for Crown owned minerals, requires that the Minister of Energy prepare minerals programmes. Minerals programmes establish the policies, procedures and provisions that the Minister shall follow in exercising his or her functions and powers under the Crown Minerals Act. Minerals programmes set out the principal reasons for and against adopting these policies, procedures and provisions and also restrictions on prospecting, exploration and mining for Crown owned minerals. Essentially minerals programmes define the mining regime for the minerals to which they apply, other than the taxation regime, environmental and health, safety provisions, land access matters and general matters concerning the investment climate.

Shallow rainfall-induced landslides in residual and colluvial hillslopes and steep embankments are a common occurrence in many settings [1, 2, 3]. While occasionally posing a threat to property and life-safety, they more often present an ongoing maintenance problem and can lead to the initiation of larger failures. Typically, these slides consist of 2 to 4-foot thick translational movements of silty and clayey soils down slope through the reduction of strength from increases in pore water pressures. Direct surficial infiltration and indirect groundwater seepage are the normative triggers for failure. In the residential community of Blackhawk, California, located east of the San Francisco Bay, these types of landslides are a common occurrence (Figure 1). However, shallow landslides have also been a repetitive and constant problem along many state highways where steep embankments have been constructed in close proximity to busy thoroughfares. Given the real threat to property values in residential and commercial settings and the constant maintenance problem posed to lifeline structures such as utilities, roadways, and pipelines, new methods to deal with these landslides are needed.

Established metallurgical plants operate in a complex environment of interdependent drivers including technology change, operating and maintenance practice, evolving markets, HSEC requirements, statutory and plant requirements, personnel turnover, ore supply, and financial conditions, to name a few. A successful optimisation program should comprehend these factors and drive towards not only lower operating costs, but also higher rates of return for a given level of investment. Optimisation programs have the potential for very high rates of return on capital that Greenfield projects rarely have. This paper presents a robust strategy and methodology for plant optimisation initiatives as well as a case study of how it was implemented at the QNI Yabulu refinery in Queensland, Australia by an integrated team of researchers, engineers and operators. The methodology is premised on the fact that nobody knows the production asset as well as the current operating team. It covers the optimisation process from ideas generation, various stages of selection against the agreed criteria, development, including testwork, funding approval and implementation. It highlights the benefits in the use of integrated teams, the establishment of a sound project basis, and a diligent, phased approach.

"Hydrophobic polystyrene nanoparticle suspensions were evaluated as potential flotation collectors for pentlandite. Experiments involving both clean model mineral suspensions and complex ultramafic nickel ores confirmed that conventional water-soluble molecular flotation collectors such as xanthate could be partially or completely replaced by hydrophobic nanoparticle flotation collectors. The ability of nanoparticles to induce flotation was demonstrated by floating hydrophilic, negatively charged glass beads with cationic polystyrene nanoparticle collectors. Electrostatic attraction promoted the spontaneous deposition of the nanoparticles on the glass surfaces raising the effective contact angle sufficiently high to promote the adhesion of beads to air bubbles. As little as 10% coverage of the bead surfaces with our most effective nanoparticles could promote high flotation efficiencies, whereas conventional small molecular flotation collector requires ~ 20% or higher coverage for a good recovery. Surface functionalized nanoparticles enhanced the ability for nanoparticle collectors to selectively deposit onto surfaces of the desired mineral particles in the presence of gangue. For example, poly (styrene-co-vinylimidazole) nanoparticles were designed to selectively deposit onto nickel mineral (pentlandite) in the presence of Mg/Si slime. Flotation tests of ultramafic nickel ores at Vale with these nanoparticle collectors have shown improvements in both pentlandite recovery and selectivity. On-going work includes attempts to identify specific applications where nanoparticle flotation collectors might be cost effective.INTRODUCTION Most mineral processing operations include multiple stages of froth flotation to concentrate and isolate the desired product. Before flotation, chemical collectors are routinely added to ground ore slurries, selectively binding to mineral-rich particles, increasing their hydrophobicity thus promoting selective flotation. (Fuerstenau, Jameson, & Yoon, 2007) Conventional collectors are surfactants with a short hydrocarbon tail and a head group, such as xanthate. A typical conventional collector is potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), which is a small molecule with an extended molecular length of about 1 nm. Critical characteristics of a good collector include the ability to selectively adsorb onto desired mineral surfaces and to lower the water/mineral surface energy. Despite the extensive role of flotation in mineral processing, some ores are difficult to process by flotation. For example, ultramafic nickel sulfide ore containing both valuable pentlandite and large quantities of unwanted Mg/Si slime [primarily serpentine, (MgFe)3Si2O5(OH)4] responds poorly to flotation. (Mani, Xu, Quinn, & Stratton-Crawley, 1997) Fibrous hydrophilic Mg/Si slime usually masks the surface of pentlandite (known as “slime coating”) due to electrostatic interaction (Edwards, Kipkie, & Agar, 1980) and dramatically depresses pentlandite flotation. Consequently, new approaches are required for processing these difficult ores."

Up to the end of World War n, flat-back cut and fill stoping with or without square sets was the universal method of ore extraction. Rapid changes in practice occurred during the post-war years; first, ore extraction was fully mechanized; secondly, the stope design for new levels, notably No. 17 Level Zinc Corporation Ltd. and No. 19 Level New Broken Hill Consolidated Ltd., was modified to suit this mechanization; and thirdly, sub-level and shrinkage stopes were developed in orebodies where cut and fill methods would be uneconomical. The following is a brief survey of the changes that have occurred-most of which were inaugurated during the last five years.ROCK DRILLINGDuring 1951 open stoping was investigated in detail. In order to reduce steel handling problems, forged steel onepass detachable bits were introduced, but were soon superseded by the "Swedish method". Investigation showed that when using a bar and arm mounted 3-in. drifter the overall drilling time was approximately 6 min. per ft. compared with 4 min. per ft. using the light jackhammer-airleg combination with 1-in. hex. by 4-in. collared shank tungsten carbide-tipped steel.Although competitive with tipped steels on a cost per foot drilled basis (excluding miner's time), detachable steel bits proved most unsatisfactory for hard drilling conditions.Rapid blunting necessitated frequent bit changes and thus caused lost drilling time. Augered, cast-in-place (ACIP) piles have been utilized in the United States for a wide range of projects since the 1950's. Due to the cast-in-place nature of the installation method (and lack of a driving criteria); however, ACIP piles have not been readily accepted by some practicing geotechnical and structural engineers. Since ACIP piles were initially developed, the installation equipment and techniques have been improved and refined and the number of experienced contractors has significantly increased. Over the past 10 to 15 years, the pile type has experienced significant growth in the United States (particularly in Florida) because engineers have become more knowledgeable and comfortable with its use. The Miami area, in particular, has experienced considerable growth in the utilization of ACIP piles primarily due to their usage on the $1 billion Miami Metrorail System project in the early 1980s. The economic advantages over other deep foundation types, coupled with some unique installation advantages, have shown that ACIP piles can be a viable foundation alternative on many projects. Even though ACIP piles have gained respect in the private sector, the pile type has generally not been readily accepted by government transportation agencies. The reluctance to readily accept this foundation type stems primarily from the quality assurance aspect of cast-in-place pile construction. Additionally, there has not been much research activity on this foundation type, technical papers, formal associations (other than the DFI), or a concerted effort to standardize the industry. This paper serves to discuss the state of practice for ACIP pile installation in the state of Florida.

Mineralisation processes in epithermal deposits in the North Island of New Zealand are best illustrated by considering the two most productive deposits: Waihi and the Thames Bonanza Zone (TBZ), which have different mineralogies and ore shoots geometries. These two deposits can be taken as typical of certain styles of epithermal deposits worldwide, and recognition of their differences can be used to develop mineralisation models of predictive value. Waihi, the major economic producer in the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ), has laterally near-continuous ore shoots over a vertical interval of 600 m which consist of quartz, chalcedony, pyrite, base metal sulphides and electrum. They are found in the foot wall of earlier quartz veins which contain quartz pseudomorphs after platy calcite and adularia. The Thames Bonanza Zone which was the second biggest producer in the CVZ has discrete near-vertical ore shoots over 300 m vertically, which consist of quartz, pyrite, base metal sulphides, electrum and in their upper parts barite, that are enclosed in veins of quartz.   The gold mineralisation in both deposits is considered to be a co-precipitate with pyrite, with that at Waihi produced by prolonged boiling in an upflow of a hydrothermal system. That at the TBZ was produced by mixing a deep water primed for gold deposition by prior limited boiling, with an oxidised condensate of the steam released by the boiling, in an outflow proximal to the system's upflow.

Increasing use of pressurized-face tunnel boring machines in North America has produced a similar increase in the application of precast concrete tunnel linings. Where a pressurized TBM is needed, immediate ground support and ground water pressure resistance is also required. A segmental lining installed within the TBM tail shield provides the only available means of providing such a sealed lining. This paper addresses new developments in North America in lining applications and design. For the purposes of this paper, a precast concrete tunnel lining is defined as a tunnel lining constructed using precast concrete segments that are assembled into a lining ring. The lining rings are connected adjacent to each other to form a tunnel lining. Each segment has a sealing gasket around it so that when the lining is completed, it provides a fully waterproof lining system. The ring is erected within the tail shield of the TBM and the annular gap around the ring is filled with grout as the machine moves forward. The ring is not expanded and normally provides the finished lining of the tunnel with no requirement for a second pass lining. The TBM has a series of hydraulic rams that push on the leading edge of the segmental lining to provide the sole system of forward propulsion for the machine. The rings are tapered, being longer on one side than the other. This allows the rings to be installed either on a curve or in a straight line depending on the rotational position of the rings.

"Noranda's Goldstream mine is a 1,500 ton per day copper-zinc mine located 60 miles north of Revelstoke, B.C.The orebody which contains 3.69% Cu and 2.69% Zn was discovered in 1972. Construction of the mine and mill was completed in 1982 and start up was achieved in May 1983.This paper will describe the flowsheet and related equipment 1n the crusher and mill, in particular the dewatering section where two Larox pressure filters are used to dry the concentrates.INTRODUCTIONThe Goldstrean property is located 60 miles north of Revelstoke, B.C. in the Goldstream River Valley (Figure #1). It was discovered during the construction of a logging road in 1972. Exploratory drilling was initiated in 1975, and in 1976 a portal was collared to obtain underground data. Samples were taken from the underground workings for metallurgical bench tests and a pilot plant run.Due to economic conditions, the decision to go into production was delayed until 1980. Concentrator construction and underground development progressed simultaneously during 1981 and 1982, and were completed by the end of 1982. Start up of the concentrator was achieved on May 2, 1983.The ore typically contains about 40% sulphides, which are chalcopyrite 10%, sphaletite 6%, pyrrhotite 20%, and pyrite less than 5%. The sulphide minerals have a high degree of intergrowth. Most of the sphalerite occurs in micron sized grains which are embedded in the pyrrhotite and, to a lesser degree in the chalcopyrite. There is also some fine dissemination of the chalcopyrite in the pyrrhotite. The waste rock is made up of about 30% quartz, 20% guange silicates, and 10% carbonates. The ore has a specific gravity of 3.2 and a natural pH of 8.2."
