"The El Indio roasting facility associated with El Indio Mine in Central Chile has operated since 1981. It is a facility developed to remove arsenic and antimony from gold bearing enargite/pyrite flotation concentrates.The three installed roasters are Nichols Herreschoff units each with 14 hearths and measuring 4.85 metres diameter. Hearths are rabbled by central shaft driven rabble arms. Product is progressively heated to 750°C under neutral to reducing atmospheric conditions to drive off labile sulphur, arsenic and antimony.Ancillary equipment includes skip hoist feed arrangements, water cooled screw conveyors for transporting and cooling calcine, gas cyclones, post combustion chambers, heat exchangers, electrostatic precipitators, bag houses, gas scrubbers and packaging facilities .Operating practices, history, mineralogy and results are reviewed. The improvements to arsenic and antimony extraction, ambiental conditions and environmental achievements are discussed.INTRODUCTIONHistoryThe El Indio property lies in the El Indio belt, a copper, gold and silver area approximately 175 km long by 10 km wide. Phase I of the Canary Wharf development in London's docklands involves the construction of six fifteen storey buildings located predominantly over water of the West India Docks. The buildings are supported on some 1000 No., 25m long, open ended steel tubular piles driven through 10m of dock water to found in dense sand at a depth of about 15m below dock bed level. The piles are of composite section with reinforced concrete within the upper 17m of the steel tube. Three trial piles were installed in the dock to investigate the driveability and performance of the driven steel tubular piles. The piles were subjected to dynamic and static load testing. Loads were applied in both vertical and horizontal directions. Vibrating wire strain gauges were installed on the inside of the steel piles, on the reinforcement and in the concrete to determine the relative proportions of the applied load carried by the steel tube and concrete infill and to establish how these proportions varied along the length of the piles. Inclinometers were also installed to monitor the lateral deflection of the piles. This paper describes the driving, construction and testing of the three trial piles. The results of the vertical and horizontal loading tests are discussed and comparisons are made between dynamic and static tests carried out on the piles.

During the runway expansion project at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida (FLL project), therewere complicated geotechnical issues with a number of cavities in the limestone-loose sand mixed ground thatexisted in many areas below the existing ground. Collapsing the cavities and compacting the runway foundation to secure the take-off and landing of aircrafts was a necessary requirement for the project. The Mammoth Vibro-Tamper (MVT) which produces less vibration and noise level, was proposed and accepted as the alternative to the originally specified Deep Dynamic Compaction (DDC) for the runway with its length of 1.5 miles and area of 570,000 square yards. In this report, the shallow compaction effect and reduced ground vibration with the MVT are presented in comparison with the DDC which was utilized on the same project in a different area of the airport. INTRODUCTION MVT was developed by Fudo Tetra Corporation in the 1960’s and has been widely used in Japan (more than 14,400,000 square yards). For example, at the Kansai International airport, a large area including aprons was compacted with the MVT. It is capable of compacting up to approximately 5m in depth by using a heavy steel plate (3m x 3m) and a strong vibrator motor (V-180, 10Hz) on top of the steel thick plate with specified time duration. We were involved in densification work with the MVT at the Fort Lauderdale Airport Project (Figure 1) from June, 2012 to February, 2014. Deep Dynamic Compaction (DDC) was originally specified as the compaction method to secure the relative density over 70% in every 2,000 square yards grids, however, we proposed the application of MVT to reduce the vibration risk and it was accepted as the alternative (Figure 2). The compaction work was completed in February 2014, without causing any delay in regard to the residual settlement due to the high embankment (H=60ft=18m).

"The roaster facility at Barrick Goldstrike Mine treats double-refractory sulfidic/carbonaceous gold ore. Prior to oxidation in the roasters, the ore is ground in two parallel dry grinding circuits utilizing 19’ Ø x 75’ double rotator mills. The design plant throughput was 12,000 dstpd. However, process improvements have significantly increased throughput rates by 25-50%. The current daily throughput record is 20,078 dstpd. Grinding circuit improvements contributing to this success include feed size reduction, ball size optimization, automatic ball charging optimization, and operating strategy changes. In addition to the changes already made, this paper discusses future optimization initiatives including on-stream particle size analysis and “real-time” ore hardness determination techniques.INTRODUCTIONBarrick Goldstrike Mines is located 29 miles Northeast of Carlin, Nevada, USA. Through 2001, the property has produced over 23 million ounces of gold making it one of the premier gold operations in the world.Prior to Barrick’s ownership, the property began producing gold from a small heap leach operation in 1975. The small-scale heap leach production continued through 1986, and in January 1987, Barrick acquired the property. Increased exploration activity by Barrick significantly increased gold reserves. In August 1988, a 4,500 dstpd mill facility was commissioned to treat high grade oxide ore. Also, heap leach operations had significantly expanded. In 1990, the mill was expanded to 6,000 dstpd, and the first autoclave was commissioned to treat refractory sulfide ore. By the end of 1996, the mill and pressure oxidation facility had expanded to 16,000 dstpd and heap leaching had ceased as oxide reserves were exhausted. In 2000, a roaster facility was commissioned to treat double-refractory sulfidic/carbonaceous ore."

Caving of the second lift of the E26 orebody at Northparkes Mines was monitored with a comprehensive package of instrumentation, including an ISS seismic monitoring system. Seismicity was collected by an array of 19 triaxial accelerometers and 9 uniaxial geophones, giving a high quality seismic data set. The seismic response to block caving at Northparkes has been divided into two papers. The first paper focuses on the seismicity during undercutting. The second paper deals primarily with the seismicity during cave propagation during initial cave production. In this paper, traditional seismic monitoring concepts are applied to seismicity during cave mining. More than 40 000 seismic events were recorded during cave undercutting between February and January 2004. Events up to local magnitude +1.3 were recorded near the mine during undercutting, with event rates of up to 500 per day. Analysis of frequency-magnitude distributions, S-wave to P-wave energy, and temporal variations in event magnitude all gave insight into the seismicity recorded. In addition, a new technique, called apparent stress time history, was shown to be sensitive to stress change from undercut blasting, and useful to identify significant periods during cave development. A significant difference was identified between the cave back location and the halo of seismic events above the cave. Throughout the undercutting, the a seismic zone of loosening was typically 50 to 70 metres in vertical thickness. Based on the seismicity, a stress driven rock mass failure model is proposed. Early in the undercutting, seismicity and movements in the seismogenic zone were directly triggered by stress change from undercutting. Towards the end of undercutting, seismicity was virtually uncorrelated with undercut blasting, and likely due to the onset of cave initiation.

Synthesis of alumina-mullite-silicon carbide composite (Al2O3-Al6Si2O13-SiCw) was obtained in situ by carbothermal reduction of a mixture of kaolin and two different silica sources. The carbothermal reduction was carried out in a horizontal tube furnace under flow of argon gas. The standard Gibbs energy minimization method was used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the reacting species. The synthesized products were mixtures of alumina, mullite and silicon carbide in the form of whiskers. The effects of adding two different silica sources of rice husk ash and silica powder to the mixture of kaolin and activated carbon were investigated. XRD and SEM analyses indicate complete reaction of precursors to yield Al2O3- Al6Si2O13-SiC as product powders, with the SiC having whisker morphology.

The use of solid state track deters allows totally passive, integrating measurements of 222Rn (radon) or of 220Rn (thoron) plus radon. A track-detecting solid is placed in a holder that is closed by a selective membrane and exposed to the atmosphere of interest to produce an accurately time-averaged record over times of interest that range typically from a week to a year. By selection of the proper membranes, dosimetry can be done for radon or for the sum of radon and thoron. A different membrane is appropriate for measuring radon under humid conditions such as are found in the ground. Large numbers of measurements have been made with these systems both in the ground, where radon levels are high, and in indoor environments, where levels are orders of magnitude less. Calibrations have been carried out at both high and low concentrations of radon. New results in the air at the site of the Shirley Basin mine and mill give reproducible results with month-long integrating periods. The off-site background levels are in the range 0.7 to 1.0 pCi/l (26-37 Bq/m3). The average yearlong on-site level is 1.5 pCi/l (56 Bq/m3); at the mill it is 2.6 pCi/l (96 Bq/m3); and the level measured at the backhoe in the open pit mine is 3.9 pCi/l (144 Bq/m3). The region of significantly elevated radon levels is confined to a radius of 1.6 km of the mine and mill. All of the on-site radon concentrations are less than but comparable to the typical values found in the living areas of modern energy-efficient homes.

The operations management system at Olympic Dam has evolved over a two-year period to the state described in this paper. This evolution has been driven largely by the requirements of the recent expansion of the Olympic Dam operation from three to nine million tonnes of ore per year. Such a change process demands an holistic approach to mine management and several techniques have been employed including XPAC, Mine Works Planner as well as a basic philosophy of æjust-in-timeÆ completion. The philosophies, software and tracking mechanisms for managing a large tonnage operation are described, outlining a fully integrated scheduling system from shift to shift detailed activity planning to a 20 year production plan. Moreover, the vision of production exceeding the current limit of nine million tonnes means that there are to be further developments to this state-of-the-art system in use at the Olympic Dam mine.

Managing a highwall failure risk in an open pit mine by controlling and mitigating the impact of vibrations produced by blasting operations is key to achieving safe and cost-effective operations. The impetus behind this study was the risk of multiple bench failures in an open pit mine that was detected by Slope Stability Radar (SSR) following blasting at the foot of a highwall. The unstable high wall was over 140 meters(459.3 ft)high and 200 meters(656.2 ft)wide. The quantity of associated material was estimated at 3,000,000 metric tons(3,306,934 US tons). The overall slope angle was 44 degrees. In order to continue mining without causing the highwall to fail, this study was initiated as part of a risk management plan to mitigate this major risk by identifying mitigation measures related to blasting operations and assessing the response of the rock mass to each blast. Identifying blasting mitigation measures consisted of optimizing blasting parameters to avoid failure of the highwall. First, a signature hole operation was carried out to obtain seismic records that were georeferenced and associated with known single charges. The method used made it possible to determine the propagation velocity of the P-waves associated with the various lithologies studied and to calculate, from the geomechanical properties of the rock masses, the maximum peak particle velocities to be respected. Subsequently, the targeted area of operation was modelled with the I-Blast software in order to optimize the firing sequences to be used according to the different lithologies present. The model also made it possible to optimally predict the particle velocities associated with each blast and ensure compliance with the previously determined peak particle velocity limits. The assessment of the rock mass’s response using SSR consisted of defining alarm thresholds and an intervention plan for various possible alarms as well as quantifying the damage to the highwall from blasting. Controlling the impact of blast vibrations on the highwall’s stability was successful, as the mitigation measures used during mining did not accelerate the highwall’s movement. No upward trend in the stabilization time of the rock mass was observed by the SSR after each blast. Post-blast geotechnical inspections and analysis of post-blast deformations in the highwall also did not reveal significant damage to the highwall as a direct consequence of the blasting.

The objectives of this paper are to introduce the International Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works and to illustrate to the participants of the 13th Australian Tunnelling Conference 2008 how the insurance industry would like to see the future of tunnelling insurance. Tunnel construction projects have suffered large losses over the years as can be shown from various loss examples and a list of major losses over the last ten to 15 years. Since the consequences of insufficient risk control had to be borne by insurers, these losses have heightened the need for improved and adequate risk management measures so that insurance cover can also in future be provided for this hazardous industry sector. Observations are made as regards to the prevailing trends in the tunnelling industry, which contribute to the increase in risk and have adverse consequences for the insurance industry. To find a solution to this dilemma various options are examined with the suggestion of a Joint Code of Practice for Tunnel Works being agreed by all stakeholders, which would become essential to secure future insurance protection for such project work. The British Tunnelling Society has, in cooperation with the Association of British Insurers, developed such a code, which the International Tunnelling Insurance Group has now adopted for global application in international markets. The content and concept of this code is explained to establish a framework of understanding and applied risk management principles for tunnel works. This initiative also has the support of the International Tunnelling Association and the International Association of Engineering Insurers. The international application of this new code is demonstrated with a few examples, which also includes Australian projects. It is the aim that this code forms in future part of the insurance coverage for tunnelling works in order to put this risk segment on a more sustainable basis. For that reason the insurance industry is seeking the support of all stakeholders of tunnelling construction projects.

If one can embrace the medical analogue, much of the mining industry currently suffers from a massive bacterial infection. When pyrite-bearing or sulfide-bearing rock formations, tailings, or mine wastes are infected by Acidithiobacillus ferro-oxidans, the likelihood of forming acid rock drainage (ARD) is almost guaranteed. The ?pharmacy? of antibiotics available is extensive, ranging from solid alkaline amendments like limestone to liquid ?medicines? such as sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium thiocyanate, waste milk, and bipolar lipids. Unfortunately, the ?geo-medical? teams of geochemists, microbiologists, engineers, and mine managers lack the tools to surgically apply these active ingredients where they are needed most with a minimum of waste. Distribution of fine grained limestone on the surface of an acidic mine waste dump is analogous to applying a bandage soaked in antacid to treat an upset stomach. The implementation of up-to-date best management practices has not healed the patient; an equivalent combination of hypodermic needle, cyber knife, and arthroscopic probe is clearly needed. Using an engineered, flow-able or pumpable foam or pHoam? as the medicinally analogous ?dextrose delivery solution? for solid and/or liquid ?geo-antibiotics?, the authors have combined off-the-shelf technologies that have been previously applied in solving geotechnical problems in the mining industry. A patent for the innovative process is pending. This paper discusses method concepts and the advantages it could provide over conventional BMPs.

Laboratory and pilot plant investigations aimed at recovering gold as an electroformed sheet from gold eluate and gold leach solutions and slurries are discussed. The electrolytic test work undertaken makes use of high surface area electrodes, in particular nickel-chrome foam metal and activated carbon, as well as ultrasonic activation. The process involves initial gold electrowinning (or adsorption onto activated carbon), followed by gold electroforming, both operations being carried out in a specially designed reactor. The pilot plant work mainly involved the treatment of gold eluate solutions from a South African gold mine containing 600 mg/L Au: some tests were also carried out on gold leach solutions containing 6 mg/L Au. In the former case, very efficient gold extraction onto the foam metal cathode was achieved using electrolysis combined with ultrasonics. The polarity of the gold-loaded cathode was then reversed and, using a replacement electroforming electrolyte, gold was electroformed in situ onto a polished stainless steel mandrel, from which gold sheet was subsequently removed. In the case of leach solutions, pilot plant tests confirmed laboratory findings that in the presence of calcium (resulting from the lime used during the leaching process) no electrowinning is possible. Laboratory tests showed, however, that when sodium (in the form of NaOH or Na2CO3) is added to the leach solution, electrowinning can indeed take place. Alternatively, if a special activated carbon electrode is used (without current), the non-ionic calcium aurocyanide complex is adsorbed on to the activated carbon. When a gold-loaded activated carbon electrode is made anodic in a gold electroforming electrolyte, gold electroforming is feasible, although the efficiency is very low. The possible implications of these developments for gold recovery are further examined.

Zarshuran gold deposit, with the total reserves of some 12.5 million tons of 4.18 g/ton ore, is considered to be an important gold mining project in the area. In this paper the feasibility studies of the whole project is carried out on the basis of several economic variables. Given that mining data are often of uncertain nature, these economic variables have therefore been estimated under the conditions of uncertainty. The resultant Net Present Value is hence also obtained under the same conditions. For this purpose, a model is first devised with the help of Excel and COMFAR software. The model is then developed that considers different scenarios which would result in different expected values for the economic variables. It is concluded that the NPV of the project is most sensitive to gold and silver price and that other variables such as discount rate, operating and capital cost all affect the feasibility of the project with lower degree of severity. Finally, risk analysis is also carried out using Mont Carlo technique, in order to estimate the most probable value of NPV. The average NPV calculated in this way is US$ 49.7 Million, whilst without due consideration of risk, this would be US$ 36.6 Million. The techniques used, together with the procedures adopted in this paper, can be used in feasibility studies of all mining projects. Such decision would result in more accurate Net Present Values than expected from other frequently used methods.

The supply of helium was less than the demand before operations were resumed at the Navajo plant in July and begun Sit a. new plant at Keyes, Okla., in August. Helium was in abundant supply after August, and the informal allocation system which had been in use intermittently since 1955 was discontinued Delivery of 26 new tank cars in August and September increased the total in the tank-car pool to 163. Defense and space agencies and the Atomic Energy Commission continued to use more helium in their operations and research.

DURING the last several years, the U-Zr system has been studied at many laboratories as one of the research programs sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission. The equilibria in part of this system have been difficult to determine, although the phase diagram from 0 to 60 atomic pct Zr has been established with reasonable certainty. Existing diagrams of the system vary appreciably beyond 60 atomic pct Zr, particularly with regard to the existence of an intermediate phase. Most existing diagrams show a transformation or reaction horizontal near 600°C. In 1955, a collection of uranium phase diagrams' was prepared at the Battelle Memorial Institute and the U-Zr diagram in that collection contained a questionable region in the vicinity of 60 to 80 atomic pct Zr. Summer-Smith" has published a phase diagram of the system that shows no intermediate phase. Summer-Smith did his work with powders and found only the uranium and zirconium eutectoid mixture from X-ray patterns of material annealed below 600°C. Mueller3 at Argonne National Laboratory did similar work with filings, and he found that initially there was a pattern of an intermediate phase, but on long-time annealing

This report contains the results of a technical and economic evaluation of conceptual systems for the underground mining, rubblization, and in situ retorting of deep oil shale deposits. Study efforts were first directed towards evaluation of the applicable geology, associated minerals, rock mechanics, in situ retorting, access mining, ventilation, rubblization, safety, and environmental impact factors. Conceptual systems were synthesized and then evaluated against these factors from both a technical and limited economic viewpoint. The results of these evaluations were then analyzed and, based upon this analysis, the following two systems were selected for further study: System II: Room and Pillar-Vertical Drill and Blast System IV: Tunnel Boring-Horizontal Ring Drill and Blast Due to the large number of variables to be considered, a computer program was developed and utilized to provide data for the cost trade-off studies and economic analysis. Results of the early computer runs indicated the value of the tool available? in the computer program and led to an extension in the contract to determine the sensitivity of the systems to several of the more apparent significant variables. These results in turn led to a refinement in the design assumptions and a better understanding of the technical and economic options available to an owner-operator of a Vertical Modified In Situ Shale Oil Extraction System. Wettability of graphite by synthetic SiO2-Al2O3-CaO-MnO slags with varied MnO content and by industrial slags was studied at 1350-1600 °C using sessile drop method under argon atmosphere. Initial contact angle was the lowest (110-115o) for the MnO-free slag. For slags with 10-40 wt% MnO, the initial contact angle was in the range 125-135o. The contact angle decreased with the contact time. The change in the contact angle with slag mass was found insignificant. The surface tension of slags obtained from the drop shape analyses was 500-800 mN/m and varied in a narrow range with temperature and MnO concentration. The reduction rate increased with increasing MnO content in the synthetic slag from 20 wt% to 40wt% and temperature. Increasing temperature also increased the rate of reduction. No correlation was observed between the reduction rate and MnO content in the synthetic slags in the range 0-20 wt% and in the industrial slags. The rate of SiO2 reduction from the molten slag was close to the rate of MnO reduction. The MnO-free slag had the largest contact area with graphite substrate. In this article an experimental study of axial bearing capacity of half-closed steel pipe pile installed at BKSH dock is presented. In comparison with open and closed end piles, half-closed end pile is considered to have high bearing capacity and good penetration, that is, it not only has a capacity as twice as the same size open end steel pipe pile, but also has blow counts as half as the same size closed end steel pipe pile. It is economic to use half-closed end pile in soft ground without a deep deposit of thick stiff clay. This article also describes a large scale model pile test and preliminarily analyses mechanism of improvement of bearing capacity of half-closed end pile with emphasis on effect of squeezed soil on side friction; an empirical approach is presented in which side friction is related to density of squeezed soil and which is useful for reasonably chosing side friction of different types of piles in design of foundarion.
