Gullies are the vital in-stope excavations that provide access for mining personnel and material to, and mined ore from, the producing faces in the tabular hard rock mines. They pose a serious problem in most mines because they induce stress orientations, which, combined with blast damage, produce adverse rock fracture patterns that contribute to the loss of hangingwall and sidewall integrity. Rock-related injury statistics confirm this by highlighting gullies as the second-highest risk area in South African hard rock mines. Inappropriate gully geometries, poor blasting practice, and non-adherence to accepted standards worsen the problem. The aim of this work is, firstly, to provide guidelines to select the correct gully geometry and appropriate support for a particular geotechnical environment and, secondly, to review the practical issues behind gully safety and stability. In order to meet these aims, this paper reviews the available literature on gullies and their history, and reports on an industry-wide survey of practices and opinions. Then it covers observations from underground visits to 107 gullies situated in the respective geotechnical environments of the Basal Reef, Beatrix Reef, Vaal Reef, Carbon Leader Reef, Ventersdorp Contact Reef, Kimberley Reef, Kalkoenkrans Reef, Merensky Reef, and UG2 Reef. Despite the differing geotechnical conditions and gully geometries, common problems are experienced with geological structure, stress, and fracturing. Results from numerical modelling are also presented to help analyse the underground observations and to quantify the merits of the different gully layouts. It is concluded that there are no new techniques available to improve gully stability, but that significant improvements in safety are attainable by employing the correct gully geometry for the geotechnical environment, good blasting practice, and appropriate support.

The Office of Surface Mining, Reclamation, and Enforcement (OSM) cited a large surface coal mine for a series of flyrock incidents that occurred when blasting close to the mining lease perimeter. The OSM placed the company on a pattern of violation status. It was determined through analysis of blasting practices that flyrock could be controlled at the mine by drilling a smaller diameter hole and stemming with crushed rock when blasting within 1,000’ (304 m) of the lease line. The procedure to install and remove the small diameter drill steel was cumbersome and dangerous because it was a manual transition. The drill carousel could only hold one diameter at the time the project was initiated. The process was very time consuming, involving a mechanic to transport the steel to the drill and spend up to 1.5 hours of downtime switching the steel. In addition, the hydraulically operated break-out wrench and break-out fork on the SKS Infinity Redrill® is only designed to work with one diameter, so these tools could not be used to disconnect subs and steels on the string. At the time, the mine’s breakdown was between 30-40% small diameter (6 ¾” (171 mm)) versus large diameter drilling (10 5/8” (270 mm)). The drill and blast group was challenged with the task to implement a 6s (Six Sigma) project that would reduce the amount of time spent on steel change-outs on the rotary drills while improving the safety of the task. A solution was proposed to carry the small diameter drill pipe, lower small diameter sub, and small diameter bit on board the drill at all times. The goal of the project was to carry the steel in the carousel after modification so that the driller could change the diameter himself on board the drill in less than 45 minutes without any assistance from a mechanic. The drill had to be modified so that the hydraulic operated break out wrench and deck fork could be utilized on both diameters. The drill accessory supplier and the mine worked together to design and implement design changes and new equipment onto two rotary drills, and new standard operating procedures (SOPs) were created for the new process. The project has been in the sustaining phase for approximately three months now and all steel diameter changes are completed by the operator under the allowable time limit.

The paper describes the geology of the gold deposits of the Yanacocha district, Northern Perú. The Yanacocha District is located 20 km north of the city of Cajamarca, whose deposits are located in the Andes of norther in Perú. Gold production may have occurred as early as Incan times, but modern exploration that began in the 1960’s targeted only copper and silver. Current mining is entirely by open pit methods with heap leach recovery. Production in 2003 was from the Cerro Yanacocha deposit and the La Quinua fluvioglacial deposit. La Quinua is not discussed in detail in this report. However, Yanacocha is described as a high-sulfidation epithermal deposit occurring in pyroclastic rocks. The success of Yanacocha has made this type of target among the most sought after by exploration companies worldwide. The important characteristics of the geology of Yanacocha are reviewed below, along with some specifics of exploration techniques used in the district.

The design philosophies for piles in unfrozen and frozen soils are compared, and their similarities and differences are underlined. It is shown that in frozen soils, the long term behavior of a pile is difficult to predict, because of inadequate knowledge on the behavior of adfreeze bond with time, and on the value and variation of the lateral normal stress acting on the pile. Both of these problems are discussed in the paper on the basis of laboratory tests and theoretical analyses.

Estimation of the axial side shear resistance of drilled shaft rock sockets is directly related to the unconfined compressive strength of the bedrock. Commonly, the mean unconfined compressive strength value is calculated from a range of laboratory test results and is used to estimate the side shear of the bedrock. This paper presents the results from a full scale axial load test performed on an 8.5-feet-diameter drilled shaft rock socket, and compares measured side shear values to estimated values for two different rock strata. Measured side shear values correlated well with the design value calculated for the "strong" rock stratum, but did not correlate well with the design value calculated for the "weak" rock stratum. The mean unconfined compressive strength was used to calculate the side shear in both strata, but review of the laboratory data indicates that this value may not have been appropriate for the weak stratum due to a large variation in the laboratory test results. Also included in this paper is a discussion of the subsurface conditions, the laboratory test results, and the methodology used to design the drilled shaft rock sockets for axial and lateral resistance.

"This paper describes how to make advanced control choices when difficult processes need improvement. The decision-making process involves choosing between a rules-based approach and a model-based approach as well as weighing benefits and drawbacks, complexity and simplicity, investment and results. This paper will present briefly each solution: basic control, advanced regulatory control, model predictive control, and expert systems such as fuzzy logic controllers and neural networks. The article then proposes a decision tree for selecting the most appropriate approach. A table will compare usage, development, commissioning, maintenance and lifecycle costs for each approach. Finally, conclusions and suggestions will summarize the methodology.INTRODUCTION Advanced process control (APC) is a popular topic. How can one decide whether advanced control should be added to an existing system? Advanced control is used to improve performance, stabilize production, handle constraints, protect equipment and manage grade changes. Most plants use feedback controllers, usually PID (proportional, integral, derivative) controllers. It is common to develop special control schemes to handle more complex processes. In classic PID process control, a controller brings a single value close to a set point using a single manipulated variable. On the other hand, APC brings several values close to optimal targets simultaneously using several manipulated variables. APC's four main strategies are advanced regulatory control, model predictive control (MPC), fuzzy logic and neural networks. Simple solutions are always preferred. Complexity will be increased if performances (production, quality, etc.) are below par. Profitability analyses should be conducted to validate project viability. Needs—not trends—should dictate choices! Before increasing complexity, it is important to define needs, goals, technical support, budget, etc. All these approaches entail strengths and weaknesses. Building a project based on technology rather than needs spells trouble."

To provide technology that can help decrease the dependence of the U.S. aluminum industry on imported bauxite, the main ore of aluminum, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the extraction of aluminum from abundant domestic reserves of kaolinitic clay. Miniplant studies of the continuous leaching of calcined kaolin with boiling 25-pct HC1 acid resulted in a 93- to 99-pct extraction of the acid-soluble alumina in the calcined kaolin feed. Data are presented for an acid leaching study carried out in three or four continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTR) in series, feed rates of 100 to 250 lb/hr of calcined kaolin, and total nominal residence times of 0.7 to 2.3 hr. A material balance for a 176-lb/hr calcined kaolin feed rate in a circuit consisting of three reactors, four classifiers, and five thickeners is given. Data provide detailed compositional and physical information for calcined kaolin, process liquors, and acid-leached residue solids.

The Bureau of Mines designed a down-fired refractory-lined combustor that efficiently burned pulverized coal to produce a gas suitable as working fluid for an open-cycle gas turbine. The gas contained relatively little carbon, so the load on the ash-separation equipment was significantly reduced. Moreover, reduction in carbon content of the gas increased the average density of the solid particles making them more amenable to removal by centrifugation. Centrifugal-type separators failed to remove sufficient ash; however, to limit blade wear enough to achieve operating periods generally deemed necessary for commercial practicability.

"There are many physical and operational obstacles in pipelines that make the passage of inspection robots impossible including:•,Small radius bends•,Low operating pressure•,Plug valves•,Large changes in pipe size•,No permanent access to the pipeline.The inspection of unpiggable pipelines requires the marriage of a highly agile robotic platform with NDE sensor technology operating as an integrated system. Foster-Miller and GE/PII are developing a robot that is essentially a battery powered, train-like platform. Both front and rear tractors propel the train in either the downstream or upstream direction. Like a train, the platform includes additional ""cars"" to carry the required payloads. The cars are used for various purposes including the NDE sensor module(s), the power supply, and data acquisition/storage components. The robot is designed with a slender aspect ratio and the ability to change shape as required by the physical obstacle presenting itself. The MFL sensor module must also morph itself through the physical obstacles, and thus, will require some level of segmentation. The segmented MFL magnetizers and transformable sensor module represent a major advance in the science of sensor technology and pipeline inspection."

The suggested new method for control of geomechanical state of undermined rock mass ensures, as a safety measure for the earth surface protection, the decrease of deformations by 2,5 - 10 times in mining the single seam, and by 1,5 - 5 times - in mining bed series, i. e. approximately within the seam ranges as in the application of full packing with various compressive properties or partial extraction of resources over the area with different coefficients of extraction. It should be noted that this new method has the following advantages o\w rhr. conventional methods: a) the decrease of the packing area and packing works volume by 2 - 4 fold including the operating and productive expenses; b) the elimination of mineral losses due to the increase of extraction coefficient up to 100 5%; c) rock utilization from workings drivage by its placing in the mined - out space. Perspective field of application of this method: disconservation of mineral resources in the left protective pillars of various designation.

Faults under high rock cover represent some of the most severe ground conditions a Tunneler can encounter. High ground water pressures and flows are usually associated with mountain faults. Ground behavior can range from blocky ground to flowing sands and squeezing clays. Sticking a IBM within a fault zone for many weeks, with the disastrous financial consequences, is still a common occurrence. Interpreting the geology and detecting the location of a fault prior to penetrating it is a fundamental step to successful tunneling. Ground water control through predraining or pre-grouting is the second fundamental step. This paper discusses techniques applied for detecting and crossing mountainous fault zones through the use of case histories across the globe.

The goal of the project reported in this paper was to make recommendations for changes in roof bolting procedures and bolter design that would reduce roof bolter accident rates. To that end the project identified the major hazards associated with each task a roof bolter operator per-forms, normalized task accident frequencies. by the time spent on each task, reviewed equipment design features and operating procedures related to the identified hazards and developed recommendations for equipment and procedural changes that would reduce, if not eliminate, the hazards. THIS REPORT covers the second in a series of five projects into which the Conowingo tunnel system has been divided for geographical and practical reasons. It outlines the construction work contemplated-to sink two shafts on the line of the main tunnel that are designated the Nos. 9A and 11 shafts, to turn off from the No. 9A shaft the Lansford and Lykens laterals, and to drive portions of the main tunnel. An emergency pumping plant, consisting of 2 separate pumprooms, each containing 3 horizontal-type centrifugal pumps of 100,000-gallons-per-minute (g. p. m.) capacity, will be constructed at the No. 9A shaft. From the No. 11 shaft will be turned off the Trevorton lateral and portions of the main tunnel, which will connect with the section driven from the No. 9A shaft. Under the proposed project, the Lansford lateral will be driven for a distance of 2 miles, the Lykens lateral for a distance of 10.56 miles, and the Trevorton lateral for a distance of 20 miles. To drive the Lykens and Trevorton laterals for the distance indicated, several construction shafts and slopes must be sunk to permit efficient and safe construction.

"As conventional, base or precious metal ores are being depleted worldwide, the mining industry is being faced with an increasing exploitation of arsenical sulfidic ores. Enargite is a common example. The downstream processing of these ores poses several problems ranging from high smelter penalties to finding economical and environmentally acceptable means of disposing of the arsenic. Several hydrometallurgical processes have been proposed for extracting arsenic from enargite concentrates, notably using alkaline sulphide leaching (ASL). However, few alternatives exist for removing the arsenic from solution and stabilizing it in an approach that is both economical and environmentally acceptable.Dundee Sustainable Technologies (“DST”) has developed a technology for the sequestration of arsenic by vitrification. Originally optimized to cost-effectively stabilize arsenic trioxide (As2O3), DST has shown that vitrification could be successfully extended to the stabilization of other arsenical products, such as calcium arsenate (Ca3(AsO4)2) and sodium arsenate (Na3AsO4). In this paper, the vitrification of arsenic in the context of an enargite leaching was newly explored and demonstrated successfully.Two processing routes are being proposed by DST for the removal of arsenic from enargite concentrates and their stabilization by vitrification. In one route, arsenic is extracted by ASL and is then precipitated under atmospheric conditions and with minimal use of reagents and time. The resulting precipitate is an unstable hydrated ferric arsenate (FeAsO4•2H2O) that is then vitrified in a non-dilutive method, significantly increasing the stability of arsenic and meeting the TCLP guideline. Unlike is required for scorodite, stabilization was successfully achieved without concern for the crystallinity of the precipitate."

In the paper the method for estimation of settlement of vertically loaded piles in a group is presented. The method is generally based on the hybrid procedure with non-linear solution for single piles and with interaction between them for the low-strain shear modulus. Some attention is paid to the influence of deformation and strength parameters used in calculations. The applied model is verified in the framework of the research programme carried out recently in the Geotechnical Department of Gdansk Technical University. It concerns monitoring and analysing the settlements of the existing structures on piles. A comparison of calculation and measurements results for two tested buildings is presented as an example.

ANFO was being used as one of the blasting agents on a construction site in New England. Groundwater was encountered in numerous blast holes. The blasting contractor was employing typical explosives loading procedures for wet conditions. An abutter to the project complained that blasting caused her well water to have an odd taste and smell. Through testing, it was determined that there were hydrocarbons and nitrates in the well water. Several days later a second neighbor complained of foul tasting water; again it was determined that hydrocarbons and nitrates were present.

"Systematic characterization of the mineralogy of massive sulfide ore deposits can provide valuable insights into ore genesis and metallurgical processing that would not be apparent otherwise. We describe a method wherein (1) normative mineral abundances are calculated from whole-rock chemical assays using an algorithm, (2) the results are cast in block models, (3) the results are then verified with automated image analysis of a subset of samples prepared as grain mounts by backscattered electron imaging and X-ray mapping on a scanning electron microscope, and (4) those verified results are integrated with textural data determined by optical microscopy.The technique is applied to the magmatic Ni-Cu-Co sulfides of the Ovoid orebody, based on geochemical assays of 3175 whole-rock samples. Three principal ore zones are defined in the Ovoid. Type I ore occurs in the center of the deposit; it is magnetite-rich and pyrrhotite-poor with intermediate contents of pentlandite and chalcopyrite. Type II ore surrounds Type I ore and is pentlanditechalcopyrite- rich with intermediate contents of pyrrhotite and magnetite. Type III ore occurs at the base and along the outer periphery of the northern part of the orebody; it is pyrrhotite-rich and chalcopyrite- poor with an intermediate content of pentlandite, and a low-to-intermediate content of magnetite. La caractérisation systématique de la minéralogie des gîtes de sulfures massifs peut fournir des indications précieuses sur la genèse des minerais et le traitement métallurgique qui ne seraient pas disponibles par d’autres méthodes. Nous décrivons un procédé par lequel (1) un algorithme est utilisé pour calculer l’abondance de minéraux normatifs à partir d’analyses lithogéochimiques, (2) les résultats sont exprimés dans des blocs diagrammes, (3) les résultats sont par la suite validés par analyse d’image automatisée sur un microscope électronique à balayage en électrons rétrodiffusés et par cartographie en rayons X sur des échantillons constitués de grains montés en résine, et (4) les résultats de cette validation sont combinés aux données texturales obtenues par microscopie optique.Cette technique est appliquée aux sulfures magmatiques de Ni-Cu-Co du gisement Ovoïde, en utilisant les analyses géochimiques de 3175 échantillons de roche totale. L’Ovoïde comprend trois types de minerai. Le type I est situé au centre du gisement; il est riche en magnétite et pauvre en pyrrhotite avec des quantités intermédiaires de pentlandite et de chalcopyrite. Le minerai de type II entoure le minerai de type I et est riche en pentlandite et en chalcopyrite avec des quantités intermédiaires de pyrrhotite et de magnétite. Stimulated by 4 years of continuous economic growth without inflation, demand for energy in the United States reached an alltime high in 1964. Total value of production of goods and services (gross national product--GNP) for the year was $629 billion, an increase of 6.8 percent from 1963. Allowing for price changes based on 1958 dollars, the gain in real terms was 5 percent. In 1964 the Federal Reserve Board Index of Industrial Production stood at 132, a rise of 6.2 percent. With the impetus provided by personal income and corporate tax reductions during the year, aggregate wages, profits, and consumption reached record levels. Even the persistent balance of payments problem improved. Against this background the national consumption of commercial energy increased 4.2 percent. Energy needs continued to be met largely from domestic resources with imports, mainly crude petroleum and refined petroleum products, accounting for but 7 percent of the total. Mineral energy resources, namely gas, coal, and petroleum, contributed 96 percent of the input of energy into the economy during the year. The remaining 4 percent came from hydropower and nuclear power.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, ferrochrome, smelting, investment, Zimbabwe Four smelting plants currently make up the ferrochrome smelting capacity in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe Alloys and Zimasco represent more then ninety per cent of Zimbabwe?s ferrochrome smelting capacity, while Maranatha and Oliken contribute the difference. Very limited investment in the sector (even for the expansion of existing smelters) has been experienced over many years, despite the fact that about 95% of the world?s chrome ore resources are in the Bushveld Igneous Complex of South Africa and the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe. The Bushveld has a greater quantity but a lower grade than the Great Dyke. A ten per cent increase in Zimbabwean ferrochromium production has been recorded in the past ten years, showing an almost stagnant capacity investment.
