"Crystalline Flake Graphite is a strategic mineral. Since 1954 nearly all North American consumption has been imported from offshore. The Bouthillier Project in Quebec, Canada, is Orrwell Energy's bid to enter the market, with plans to begin production of a 500 TPD operation in 1984.Milling of flake graphite is considered easy, yet more problems have been encountered in flowsheet and plant design than in most other minerals. A fresh approach to existing technology was taken, giving results that are highly satisfactory. The key to graphite liberation without flake deterioration is found to be in autogeneous grinding. In addition to producing marketable coarse graphite by such autogeneous grinding, flotation and tabling, super purity fines can be produced using repeated regrinding, elutriation and flotation. This paper discusses the design of a 500 TPD plant based upon the results obtained from bench and pilot plant studies. INTROOUCTIONWhen the Black Oonald mine at Calabogie Ontario ceased production in 1954 nearly all North American crystalline flake graphite had to be imported from offshore. "Louvicourt Mine's concentrator, located near Val d'Or, Quebec, treats an average of 4,300 tonnes of ore per day composed mainly of copper, zinc, gold and silver. An analysis of concentrator revenues and metallurgical losses shows a potential for additional gain, particularly in regards to precious metals (kustelite) where recovery is usually around 67 -70 %. The planning, installation and trial operational period of two Outokumpu SK-240 flash cells at the underflow of the primary cyclones took two years. The use of (( flash flotation )) technology has made it possible to exploit the favourable conditions at the underflow of the primary cyclones such as precious metal concentration and the presence of liberated coarse chalcopyrite. These conditions permit early flotation (fresh surfaces) of the kustelite and the liberated copper. Since the start-up of the flash cells, the metallurgical gains have turned out to be very positive with increases in metal recovery reflected in appreciable NSR gains. Also, significant savings in reagent consumption and a coarser copper concentrate have made it possible to reduce the drying cycle of the Larox filter presses since the cells were put into operation.BACKGROUNDLouvicourt Mine is operated by Aur Resources Inc. (30% ownership) on behalf of its partners Novicourt Inc. (45%, subsidiary of Noranda Inc.) and Teck Corp. (25%). The mine is located in northwestern Quebec about 600 km north of Montreal and about 25 km east of the mining town of Val d'Or. The mine commenced commercial production in July 1994.The massive sulphide ore deposit lies at depths varying between 450 m and 900 m. Mining reserves (2% Cu equi. cut-off) as of Jan. Is', 2000 are estimated at 7.5 million tonnes of ore averaging 3.4% Cu, 1.8% Zn, 28.0 g/t Ag and 0.9 g/t Au. Delineated ore reserves permit the use of a mechanized transverse blasthole mining method. The extraction order is a typical 1.3.5 mining sequence. Primary and secondary stopes are 15 m wide, 15 to 70 m long (25 m long average) and 30 m high. Backfilling for pillar recovery and regional stability is required."

Gases and vapors given off by petroleum and its products have long been recognized as somewhat injurious, when inhaled in high enough concentrations. The petroleum industry has recognized these effects and has tried to minimize the possibility of employees encountering dangerous concentrations of the vapors. Petroleum gases and vapors have not, however, been considered as actively poisonous, in the sense that hydrocyanic (prussic) acid and phosgene are poisonous; men have been exposed to them repeatedly, and for long periods, without any marked ill effects. Light Mexican crude oil when first introduced into the United States for refining was handled in much the same way as was customary with other apparently similar crudes; but experience soon showed that some toxic substance escaped from the crude during production and transportation and in most of the refinery operations. After a preliminary investigation several of the larger companies decided that the gases from the petroleum were the source of trouble, and therefore took precautions, wherever possible, to protect the men from exposure to these gases. With the increasing use of Mexican crude, this problem has become important. The present report covers the work done on the subject by the Bureau of Mines and the Public Health Service under a cooperative agreement with the American Petroleum Institute.

Petroleum exploration in onshore Gippsland was directed in the 1950s and 1960s towards plays in the basal Latrobe and Strzelecki Groups, but these became forgotten in the 1970s with the Latrobe play discoveries offshore. The principal explorationists of the time were Woodside Oil and Arco Ltd, who then departed the scene after drilling some 18 wells without major success. In the late-1980s successful hydrocarbon finds in equivalent age Otway Group sediments in the Otway Basin were made and in early 1990 Tyers Petroleum began investigations into Strzelecki Group prospects as applied to the onshore Gippsland Basin. Some 18 anticlines have been mapped, based on shallower coal exploration drilling in the Latrobe Group, which from seismic and gravity evidence are believed to unconformably overlie similar anticlinal structures in the underlying Strzelecki Group. Strzelecki targets of interest within drilling depth are the basal Tyers Conglomerate/Rintouls Creek Sandstone Formations which outcrop in the north of the Latrobe Valley and are analogous to the Pretty Hill Sandstone in the Otway Basin. In addition, intra-Strzelecki Group targets similar to Heathfield and Windermere Sandstone Members are also considered to be present. Good source rocks are abundant including coal seams and carbonaceous sediments of Neocomian and Jurassic age, which lie within the oil window. Seal is provided by the overlying Aptian-Albian aged volcanogenic sediments. The Tyers/Rintouls sandstones - a target in the Woodside/Arco wells, with two exceptions, were not reached. Encouraging intra-Strzelecki shows were reported in many of the wells. Basal and intra-Strzelecki porous quartzose sandstones remain one of the few untested plays left in the Gippsland Basin and, in the onshore, merit extra attention as they he within the oil window at economically drillable depths.

The selection of a mining plant for carrying on development work presents many problems distinct in themselves, and affected by various local factors. In this paper, the writer proposes outlining and discussing in some detail the chief factors governing the economic selection of such plants. This will be followed by an enumeration of the underground and surface plant required for carrying on several hypothetical exploratory and mining operations. Where it is impossible or not convenient to obtain hydro-electric power, and where wood for fuel is scarce, we now find oil engines being used. A 100 h.p. oil engine, such as would be required to operate a three-drill air compressor, consumes approximately five Imperial gallons of fuel-oil per hour at full load. On the basis of a 60 per cent load factor, this gives, for eight hours' operation, a probable actual consumption of twenty-four Imperial gallons.

"The Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) has recently obtained a Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA). CAMP has utilized the technology for several projects with excellent results. The MLA is able to both analyze size and quantify mineral phases. Therefore, the MLA is becoming the Sherlock Holmes of the mining and metallurgical industry. For this presentation, four projects have been evaluated and data was collected using the MLA. The first project involved tungsten mine. Previous mining practices have yielded poor tungsten results and recoveries. By using the MLA, tungsten mineral phases, along with possible contaminants, were verified and the results used to try to increase overall tungsten recoveries. The second project evaluated a molybdenite/chalcopyrite concentrate with surprising results. The third project is a silver project. Initial flotation scoping tests were performed by attempting to separate silver from gangue material. Because of the poor recovery results (less than 5%), MLA was used to determine possible scenarios for increasing silver recovery. Finally, the last project involves gold evaluation in tailings. For all projects, MLA application results will be presentedand discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) has recently received a software add-on to a scanning electron microscope (SEM) located at Montana Tech. The Mineral Liberation Analyzer (MLA) technology was developed by Dr. Ying Gu of the JKTech Center of the University of Queensland. Since August 2006, CAMP has received and processed over 50 samples. These samples include a total mineralogy of tungsten ore samples, gold tailings, lead zinc tailings pile, molybdenite concentrates, copper concentrates, as well as others. During analysis of these received samples, the technology allows the samples to be quantified mineralogically with some surprising results.For analysis, the samples were initially sieved between 170 to 200 screen sized mesh. This ensures that received samples mineral size is fairly uniform. The samples are then placed into epoxy and allowed to harden. Next, the samples are polished and carbon coated for MLA analysis."

Mining companies require accurate short-term mining forecasts to meet budget targets and customer needs. Challenging mining conditions along with employee turnover and lack of standard geologic modeling and mine planning processes can result in time-consuming and inconsistent mine plans. Documentation and automation of the processes involved in mine planning, as well as proper software utilization, are critical in overcoming these challenges. This paper discusses the steps involved in achieving an optimized mine planning system to accomplish productive and cost effective operations. In addition, a case study is included to describe the process of implementing a semi-automated system whereby the geologic model and mine scheduling database are updated monthly to incorporate changes in geology in a relatively complex open-pit coal mine. This case study proves that the ability to update geologic models based on the latest information gathered from production drilling and mining activities can greatly enhance the ability to accurately predict short-term mining production.

"In the base metals industry of today, operations required to continuously improve productivity and reduce unit production costs. Consistent with these goals is the improvement of the muck haulage cycle from open stopes with the No. 12 Mine.Existing haulage from open stopes occurs with LHD units experience at Brunswick indicates that LHD units have a higher unit cost per tonne mucked than loader-truck combinations when the haulage exceeds approximately 150 m.The reintroduction of open stoping at Brunswick made existing loader-truck combinations unsuitable. It was recognized that application of recent continuous loading technology could potentially result in significant unit cost savings and productivity increases.A review of the technology resulted in the testing of the Voest Alpine AL60 loader in the open stopes located on the 1000m Le vel. Testing began in January 1988 and finished in late November 1988. The test will provide experience as well as quantified production and maintenenace parameters f or the purpose of quantifying production unit costs and system productivity, ultimately resulting in a decision to further utilize or not utilize the loader as a primarymucking unit at Brunswick .INTRODUCTIONBrunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd. produces approximately 10500 tonnes per day from the No. 12Mine located 35 km southwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick Mining is the largest (single mine) producer of zinc in the world having mined over 52 million tonnes since 1964. Many years of production still remain with proven and probable reserves in excess of 90 million tonnes. Reserves grade at an average of 3.65% Pb. 8.99070 Zn, 99g/mt Ag and 0.32% Cu . The operation employs 1446 people with approximately 800underground including operations and maintenance staff.In the No. 12 Mine two major mining methods are presently utilized . The primary method is Mechanized Cut and Fill (MCF) accounting for approximately 6500 tonnes per day from four major areas. The remaining 4000 tonnes per day is produced from open stopes with the majority of 2800 tonnes per day being produced by the 1000 level.The 1000Level contains 30 million tonnes segmented into open stope blocks 30 m high, 15m and 30 m on strike , with a transverse width of 10m to 50 m (Fig. I). Stopes are organized on a primary secondary stope arrangement along strike. Primary stopes are undercut and overcut full size with the back fully cablebolted. All stope and lateral development is driven 4.0 m high. All stopes to date are flat bottom (Fig. 2). Primary stopes are filled with cemented rock- fill , secondaries with conventional rockfill, Haulage from the stopes is primarily with 8-yard LHD units ; mucking is approximately 50% conventional and 50% remote. Haul distance to date has averaged approximately 150m with current stope haul distances of approximately 300m. Haulage is presently to a small jaw crusher situated on the 1000 Level. From August 1989on, haulage will be to a set of ore passes feeding to a large gyratory crusher situated on the 1200 Level. Start up of the gyratory crusher corresponds to an increase in tonnage from 1000 Level to 4100 tonnes per day."

Addressing community concerns in relation to an economic activity, particularly when it causes significant community impacts, is especially important for the development of extractive industry projects. Pipelines comprise an integral part of many hydrocarbon developments, which may cause different effects on local economic development, communities and the environment compared with open cast mines. This paper explores community impacts associated with a case study of the oil pipeline æEastern Siberia-Pacific OceanÆ in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia. Based on semi-structured interviews, conducted in 2006 - 2008 in Russia, the paper investigates claims of local communities about potential impacts of the pipeline development of their environments and economic activities as well as community claims for greater involvement in sharing the benefits from this major infrastructure project. A community of Indigenous people, Evenk, is likely to be most profoundly affected by the development due to impacts on their traditional activities such as hunting and reindeer herding. The paper examines in detail the regional economic, social, environmental and Indigenous peoples concerns over the construction of the oil pipeline and investigates actions and methods adopted by community organisations to voice their concerns about the pipeline development. Finally, the paper assesses the process of interaction between the pipeline developers and regional stakeholders.

One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. American Tire Corp. (www.americantire.us) is one of the companies working to supply tires to the mining industry. It announced that the demand for its 1.6-m (63-in.) tires that have a zero failure history globally is great and that the company signed contracts worth more than $500 million at MinExpo. WHEN "Chief" Buehler in mid-September set out on his official 10,000 mile swing-around-the-circle visiting Local Sections he decided not to tell his audiences how to organize and operate a state geological survey. As the director for 28 years, of the Missouri Bureau of Geology and Mines (which, he concedes, is the best in existence) lie could have done this to good advantage; but he preferred to discuss affairs of the Institute. In 25 speeches made to member and student groups, he dwelt on sonic or all of the following phases of activities. He stressed the vital importance of the Local Sections in providing the opportunity for members to associate under pleasant auspices with others in their profession. The benefits of Institute membership he classified as tangible and intangible. Of the two lie felt that the latter were more important. A man's progress in his profession depends in large measure upon a broad acquaintance and friendship with others. The Institute is incomparably the best medium for meeting fellow engineers. The primary, function of the new enlarged Membership Committee is to obtain a comprehensive list of engineers eligible to be members, always hearing in mind that the standards of membership must not be lowered in any degree. These men are to be invited by individual letter to apply for membership. Whether they become members or not is of less importance; but it is vital that no qualified man should be outside the fold for the reason that membership had never been suggested to him. Dr. Buehler emphasized repeatedly his feeling that the younger man that had never had Institute membership brought specifically to his attention had been cheated:

"The first known use of activated carbon dates back to the Ancient Egyptians who utilized its adsorbent properties for purifying oils and medicinal purposes. Centuries later, the early ocean going vessels stored drinking water in wooden barrels, the inside of which had been charred. (However, by modern definition the carbon used in these applications could not truly be described as activated.) By the early 19th century, both wood and bone charcoal was in large scale use for the decolorization and purification of cane sugar.However, it was not until the beginning of the First World War that the potential of activated carbon was really capitalized upon. The advent of gas warfare necessitated the development of suitable respiratory devices for personnel protection. Granular activated carbon was used to this end as, indeed, it still is today.By the late 1930's there was considerable industrial scale use of carbon for both gaseous and liquid phase application and new manufacturing processes had been developed to satisfy the needs of industry. During the 1939-1945 war, a further significant development took place - the production of more sophisticated chemically impregnated carbon for the removal of both war and nerve gases."

The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. The Toulon South Tunnel in France is the second part of a project started 20 years ago. After the problems and delays suffered during the construction of the North Tunnel, due to a complex geologic context of highly fractured and soft rocks under a highly urbanized environment, a very dense automatic monitoring system was implemented to control the settlements of surface (more than 1000 points), the structures adjacent to the tunnel alignment and the underground galleries being constructed. The latest automatic instrumentation systems were installed, using for example AMTS capabilities in terms of ?automatic prismless settlement monitoring?. All the data (geotechnical, structural and geological) was gathered in a global automatic data acquisition system and continuously available on a web based interface. Three different threshold levels (notification, anomaly, alert) were set up, each one with a differential and an absolute value for settlements. Depending on the actual geological site conditions and the actual monitored settlements, different supporting systems and excavation techniques were used. Furthermore, the monitoring data was also used to predict and anticipate the future settlement, by comparing it continuously with the theoretical Peck settlement curves. This method allowed a better risk management by limiting the settlement on existing structures and helped to secure the Works progress schedule, for a project that lasts from July 2007 to March 2011. The implementation of this observational method application is presented in this paper.

Caving mining methods that are based on a planned caving of rock above and/or at times surrounding the material being mined can be classified in three broad categories: longwall mining, sublevel caving, and block caving. Each of the three methods involves a distinct technology as well as art of operation. Each requires a relatively large, regular, and predictable ore body. As a rule, the effect of mining results in some form of impact or change on the surface. Operationally, underground caving methods are characterized by high productivity as well as a high percentage of extraction of the mineral being mined. A key element for the productivity of this form of mining is the ability to standardize the various elements of work taking place underground. Therefore, work-men may perform a specialized role rather than function as all-around miners. Further, the nature of the mining methods lend them to a high level of mechanization. Operations and manpower can be centralized into a relatively small area where supervision can be concentrated and therefore be more effective. Productivity as well as safety benefits thereby. The caving method is unique in that the exploitation openings are deliberately destroyed by the process of mining. Rock mechanics principles focus on the ensurance and the propagation of the cave as well as the continuance of the mine openings designed to extract the broken ore. As a rule, production operations are designed to maintain a steady, continuous flow of ore from the extraction areas. This steady flow rather than an intermittent flow tends to promote good caving action as well as reduce hangups.

The data reported in this bulletin are largely the result of experiments conducted by the Salt Lake City station of the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the department of metallurgical research of the University of Utah. The work on lead is only one of the phases of the investigations carried on at that station during the years 1914 to 1916. The results of similar work with zinc ores and with copper and other ores will be published in future reports of the bureau.

Mining costs, however, depend largely aeon the efficiency with which the methods employed underground are [applie] as well as upon the selection of the method best adapted to the physical conditions. The purpose of this paper is to present to the operator in other districts a detailed description of ho mining method used ins results obtained in tie exploitation of the bedded magnetite deposits of the Mineville district. The town of Mineville is situated in the Adirondacks, five miles west of Port Henry on Lake Champlain.
