This paper describes the method used at Agnes Gold Mine in the calculation of pillar strengths, which involves a back-analysis type of approach. The results obtained there are comparable with those obtained by accepted formulae for pillar strength. It was found that a stress level of 70 MPa for the width of combined pillars (Le. crown and sill pillars) causes failure of the reef drives as well as the tops and bottoms of the stope side walls. As shrinkage stoping to depths of more than 650 m would result in very low percentage extractions, alternative methods of stoping will have to be investigated for these depths.

This paper describes how a 'mined out' coalfield is being mined successfully by opencast methods. The coalfield is that at New Vaal Colliery, which is situated in the Vereeniging-Vanderbijlpark-Sasolburg industrial complex. Al three coal seams at New Vaal had been mined previously, when the better-quality coal had been removed. The coal-preparation plant at New Vaal, which is also described, supplies coal to the 3600 MW Lethabo Power Station. The Colliery has been designed to supply 600 million sales tons of coal over its forty-year life.

Prof C T O'Connor holds the degrees of BSc, BSc Hons, University of Cape Town (UCT), where he started his academic Lecturer in the Department of Physical Chemistry in 1976. Mr P Smith, educated in England and the former Southern Rhodesia, joined Gold Fields of South Africa in 1966 as a Metallurgical Learner Official. After obtaining a BSc Eng at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1972, he returned to Gold Fields. Mr P D K Robinson was born in Zimbabwe, and was educated at Dale College in Kingwilliamstown, matriculating in 1952. He holds a Mine Surveyor's Certificate obtained in 1961) and a Mine Manager's Certificate (obtained in 1966), as well as an EDP from the University of the Witwatersrand.

The paper compares operational parameters for the electric reduction smelting of pig iron and ferroalloys in pilot and industrial furnaces. Data from two pilot furnaces of approximately 200 and 500 kW operating-load capacity, as well as from several production furnaces, are included. Examples are given for the smelting of pig iron, ferronickel, ferromanganese, ferrochromium, and ferrosilicon. In most instances, the results from the pilot furnaces, such as the values for consumption and product analyses, corresponded fairly well with comparable data from the industrial furnaces. For ferrosilicon, the power consumption in the pilot furnace was higher than that in the industrial furnace.

An overview of methods of manufacture is presented, as well as the results of laboratory experiments on the making of stainless clad steels. , It is concluded that stainless clad steel can be made in South Africa with existing rolling equipment, and that good bonding between the two materials depends on clean mating surfaces, proper edge welding, and a minimum reduction of 25 per cent at a rolling temperature of 120O"C. In practice, a minimum reduction of 70 per cent at 1100cC is recommended. : Suggested applications for clad steel include parts and equipment for the chemical, petrochemical, marine engineering, and mining industries, for the building sector, and for household appliances.

An account is given of the procedures used by the South African Iron and Steel Industrial Corporation (Iscor) for tests on the flotation of coal fines, and some of the beneficiation problems encountered with coal from Durnacol, Grootegeluk, and the Soutpansberg area are discussed. These, and other South African coals differ from overseas coals in that they contain a high percentage of fixed ash, which means that they have to be crushed more finely for liberation and that they then contain more fine material (smaller than 0,84 mm). In addition, the coal from the three areas mentioned occurs in fine layers and seams, and contains many intergrown particles.

Calculations are given for the reduction in amplitude and change in phase of the diurnal variation in air temperature as the air flows through a mine. The concrete lining of a typical shaft was found to have a much greater effect than the steelwork. An increase in the conductivity of the concrete, or filling of the steelwork with water, did not have enough effect on the rise in air temperatures underground during the day to justify the costs involved. The steel temperature followed the air temperature much more closely than the concrete temperature did. Calculations are given for the heat stored in steel and concrete during the day.

In the first section, a brief background to the practical and theoretical aspects of bacterial leaching is presented. Descriptions are given of present and potential methods for exploiting bacterial leaching in metal-winning. In the second section, the results of recent research are presented. The aim of this work was to obtain a greater understanding of the mechanism of bacterial leaching of sulphide minerals. Bacteria were observed to catalyse leaching reactions by oxidising ferrous ions to ferric ions, by removing protective films at the mineral surface and by depolarising cathodic areas.

Value added blasting is a process methodology that links tasks and processes, with the aim to improve/enhance the technical application of explosives technology and initiating systems, resulting in improved output. A fully instrumented laboratory drilling machine is described. It is designed to produce realistic drilling conditions with diamond microbits of 20 mm diameter. A computer-controlled data-logging system records the net power consumption, rotational velocity, bit thrust, torque, and penetration rate. Tests can be conducted under conditions of set thrust and rate of advance. In the tests reported, there is a significant correlation between the rock drilability and the measured rock properties of relative abrasion resistance and uniaxial compressive strength. Wear of a diamond bit is a crucial factor that cannot be determined simply from rock properties. Realistic drilability testing with appropriately scaled microbits is a convenient and economical way of evaluating diamond-bit performance and determining rock drilability.

Cassiterite is considered to be the only economically significant tin mineral in the earth's crust. In its purest form, cassiterite contains 76 per cent tin. The mineral is hard and heavy but also extremely brittle. and is therefore ideally suited to gravity recovery techniques. Cassiterite deposits can be categorized into two main types, i.e. alluvial or 'soft' rock deposits, and 'hard' rock deposits. The former are relatively simple to upgrade owing to their relatively coarse nature and their high degree of liberation. Hard-rock deposits, on the other hand, require considerably more sophisticated gravity methods to achieve the required degree of beneficiation. Various types of gravity recovery devices, both old and new, are described, and their respective roles in the flowsheets used are illustrated.

The environmentally acceptable disposal of fine-particled mining and industrial wastes by the formation of hydraulic- fill slimes dams is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the total mining endeavour. Relatively little is known of the behaviour of waste slurries during deposition. Tests were conducted during the middle of this year to evaluate techniques and the equipment used in a novel continuous mining system for use in narrow reef tabular orebodies. Equipment was designed and supplied to test a mechanized drilling rig, a selection of rock breaking techniques and an integrated rock removal system, mounted on a self-advancing reciprocating flight conveyer. As the rock breaking techniques do not depend on the use of large quantities of conventional explosive the systems and equipment employed here have the potential to run continuously for 24hours per day. Whilst the tests carried out use simple prototype equipment employing established technologies, the long-term objective remains the use of sophisticated machinery capable of running continuously and un-manned, only interrupted by brief service intervals. INTRODUCTION What I want to discuss is the future pattern of manpower in the mining industry, and I should like to begin by examining some relevant statistics. There are four areas that must be examined. Firstly, the future rate of production of different minerals must be estimated. Secondly, an assessment must be made of the balance of different mining technologies likely to be used for each mineral. Thirdly, the manpower requirements for each technology must be determined. Methods for the prediction of seepage quality from waste-disposal facilities are evaluated for input to the design of desalination treatment facilities. This is done by reference to a waste dump seeping into a near-surface aquifer, the contaminated seepage being collected by scavenger wells. As the quality of contaminated water intercepted by the wells will vary with both space and time, it is necessary for predictive methods to accommodate such variations. One-dimensional and two-dimensional predictive solute transport models are described and applied to the seepage and scavenger-well example mentioned above. The advantages and disadvantages, interims of overall applicability, data requirements, and possible accuracy, are described and discussed. While one-dimensional models have the advantages of speed, simplicity, and cost, the frequent requirement of prediction in both space and time necessitates more complex, two-dimensional simulation.

SYNOPSIS Many tabular mining problems can be modelled effectively by displacement-discontinuity techniques, which can be extended directly to represent fracturing on discrete planes and movements on planes of weakness. This paper presents a unified method for computing the energy changes that occur when multiple discontinuities intersect and are extended incrementally. It shows how this method can be used to deduce energy-release information for standard layout problems and, in addition, how the technique can be incorporated in numerical procedures based on the displacement-discontinuity method. Examples are given to demonstrate the effects of off-reef fracturing and the importance of stope-fault intersections during seismic events.

This paper sketches an expert system for use underground in pinpointing problem areas in the operation of machines. The system is typically a software 'shell' designed to accommodate a series of 'if-then' rules that are intertinked to systematically search for the cause of the problem. During the search, the system asks a series of questions that have to be answered by the operator and then, when necessary, by an artisan. The rules of the system are generated by a knowledge engineer whose function it is to gather the necessary diagnostic information and prepare it in the required format for the expert system. Much still requires to be done in the development of such systems and in the testing of hardware to withstand the mining environment.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the adsorption of gold cyanide on carbon in the presence or absence of electrolytes and acids proceeds by the same mechanism. Although the identity of the gold cyanide adsorbate is not known, the mechanism appears to have an initial adsorption stage that involves the adsorption of an ion pair: Mn+[Au(CN)-2]n where Mn+ is a metal ion (for example Na+, K+ and Ca2+) that has a lower solubility than the Au(CN)-2 anion in the adsorption medium, followed by a reduction step in which either a sub-stoichiometric Au(CN)x surface species or a cluster-type compound of gold is formed.

For some years the Collieries Research Laboratory of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa has been engaged in the development and application of computer programmes to aid in the solution of rock mechanics problems. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce some of the programmes having general applicability. A system capable of predicting stresses and displacements induced by large-scale tabular excavations is discussed. A finite element programme especially designed for handling layered continuum problems, and which is being used extensively has been supplemented by an automatic mesh generation facility that reduces problem preparation times considerably. Some typical applications of these programmes are described. An entirely new approach, potentially capable of performing linear three-dimensional continuum analysis at practical cost is introduced.
